right now it’s almost halfway through 2023, and 2024 is an election year in the US. I have started to see a growing proliferation of posts suggesting that there is no difference between the republican and democratic parties--the exact same kind of posts I saw an awful lot of before the last major election here. I am unfollowing folks who post or reblog these sort of posts, as I consider these posts to be fascist propaganda framed as leftist discourse, designed to suppress anti-fascist votes and voters.

Hello guys. This is a really dumb poll, but I gotta do it. Thing is, I never know when the best time to post a video is, so, would you help me determine what day it’s best to post an SNTM video? Based on what day you’d be more likely to see it, or you think its the best time for everyone. I don’t know at this point, lol.
Vote here please!
PS: I have finished most videos, only one to go, but I feel confident I can finish it in a week or two. So, we’re starting the show again next week. I’m excited!

Given that American Election Season is nigh upon us, I'm seeing a lot of posts reminding people to be aware that you are not immune to psyops, that people & organizations have run them on social media including tumblr before to get people not to vote, etc. And those posts are good, and I don't want to derail them.
But!
It is also important to remember: sometimes the people posting about not voting are genuine and sincere, and they believe most of the same things you do, and they think they are (and in some instances, maybe even are on other issues) progressive activists. And they are still wrong about not voting. Just because you agree with someone on many/most issues, doesn't mean you will or have to agree with them about ALL issues. Just because someone is right on issue X doesn't mean they are right about issue Y.
And this is especially true when it comes to tactics and strategy. It is very common to agree on the nature of a problem and what an ideal world would look like, and still massively disagree on the path to get to that solution. On most issues, there are multiple ways to tackle a problem (and actually solving the problem requires multiple tactics used together). Harm reduction and revolutionary tactics are often both compatible and necessary.
So if someone is telling you not to do a tactic that requires very little time and energy commitment, like voting, it's worth looking at whether their arguments are sensible, consistent, and valid, even if you generally agree with the person on everything else. The choice isn't necessarily between them being right about voting or them being a psyop - sometimes people are just wrong, and it's on all of us to consume social media critically and not fall for bad arguments.

Why can't famous people write me any other time?
UGH. I'm so sick of deleting like 50 daily emails--some from really cool famous people--begging for my political donations. I made some donations earlier this month with an unexpected windfall check, and now I'm on EVERYONE'S list and they're all begging for more. Look, I'm disabled, I'm dependent on my spouse's salary, there's only so much I can do! I'm scared to death about this election! But quit trying to make me scareder, I can't help any more!
Meanwhile, spouse and I voted this weekend and I put the ballots in the mailbox yesterday. We sat down with a computer, zoom, and the ballots and did research on all the many items. (Oh, California.)
BTW, if you are in Cali, you have the good fortune of having access to Voter's Edge (formerly smartvoter). Unfortunately, it's only set up for CA now--it used to be nationwide :( --but if you are in CA, give it a look! It will look up your personal ballot if you're willing to give it your street address and will give you info about all your peeps and props.

for the americans who follow me - if you're eligible to vote (or know someone who is) and have literally any questions about the process, want to check who's going to be on your ballot, or want to check your voter registration, you can use vote411.org!
it's run by the league of women voters, has a shitload of information about voting available in english and spanish, and also can help you register to vote if you haven't done that yet. highly highly recommend, especially since 2022 is such an important election year!

(The Washington Post)
For those who don't know, the US Supreme Court just ruled that states are allowed to enforce trans healthcare for minors. Undoubtedly, this will trigger a wave of other states that either hope to pass or have already passed policies to do the same. This is going to kill children, and harm more in long-lasting ways.
So, how can you help?
FUCKING VOTE. I don't care if you don't like Biden, he's not the only one on the ballot. Vote representatives into your city council who will turn our city into a sanctuary city. Vote for governors and state reps who will, even if they don't pass new protections, oppose bans being pushed through. Chsllenge and kick out conservative incumbents who are banking on their races being obscure enough for people to not vote in.
Anyone telling you voting is useless is either lying to you or grossly uninformed and think saying this is the edgy new take that will make them look hip and informed. Yes, the system is broken. But short of burning the whole thing to the ground (which personally I'm not a fan of as I quite enjoy having like. Roads and the FDA) what we can do is to change it for the better, by starting with the local races and working our way up.

On Voting in America
So one of the most profound comments on routine chores that I've ever encountered was, hilariously, the Pickle Rick episode of "Rick & Morty," where (after a lot of shenanigans have already ensued) this therapist absolutely lays Rick out:
"I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass. Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is: it's not an adventure. There's no way to do it so wrong you might die. It's just work. And the bottom line is some people are okay going to work and some people, well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."
I think about this at least once a week — usually while I'm doing my laundry or sweeping or some other task that needs doing and won't get me anything more than clean clothing or a dog-hair-free floor. There's no Pulitzer for wiping down your microwave or scrubbing your toilet; no one's awarding you for getting all the dishes out of the sink. At best you have the satisfaction of crossing it off your list.
Voting is very much the same (and I'm talking about the US here, as an American). Sure, you sometimes get a sticker; but nobody's going to cheer for you. There's no adventure here, no potential for anything more than crossing something off of a list. It's a chore, something that needs doing in order to repair, maintain, and yes even clean. So I get why people don't like doing it.
And I've decided I don't give a shit.
Do it anyway. Your country takes astonishingly little from you — taxes, the once-in-a-blue-moon jury duty, and a theoretical draft that hasn't been used in over half a century and likely will never be again — but it asks you (asks! not requires! not demands!) to vote once a year. It's not always easy; especially in conservative states, the impediments to vote can be ridiculous. But it is once a year and unlike in our nation's all-too-recent past, you will not die if you do it.
In fact, the worst outcome from voting these days is that the person or issue that you vote for loses — but you won't know if they lose until after the election. Polls are less accurate now, for a whole host of reasons; you cannot know until after the election who or what will win. This makes your vote more valuable than possibly ever before.
Use that power. Not because it's exciting or even rewarding, but because your vote is what keeps our country's metaphorical teeth from falling out and our metaphorical ass from stinking.
Brush, wipe, vote.

In a concerning turn of events, Ohio has become the newest addition to the growing list of states progressing gender affirming care bans for transgender youth out of legislative committees. If Ohio successfully passes this bill, House Bill 68, it will become the 20th state to do so. The bill has weathered numerous iterations and significant setbacks in the past. However, the latest version has emerged with an unprecedented provision unseen in similar bills from other states: a mandate to screen for “influences,” or “causes,” of being transgender.
The bill mandates that before therapists can diagnose a patient with gender dysphoria, they must first screen for a host of other potential "causes" that might explain an individual's transgender identity. Included in these are anxiety, depression, and autism. This provision ignores established scientific consensus: none of these conditions "cause" someone to be transgender. Furthermore, there are no existing diagnostic tools or guidelines to establish the "cause" of someone's gender identity, because fundamentally, such "causes" are nonexistent.
[ ]
The list of potential causes forwarded for being transgender in the bill include:
ADHD
Autism
Anxiety
Depression
Physical, Mental, and Emotional Abuse
Trauma
Moreover, even when these so-called "causes" are screened for and no underlying reasons for a person's gender identity are found, treatment remains banned. Essentially, these screenings don't provide access to gender-affirming care for trans youth; rather, they erect a formidable barrier to even obtaining mental healthcare for transgender youth.
Disturbingly, these provisions essentially mandate "gender exploratory therapy," a new conversion therapy currently pushed by members of Christian conversion therapy organizations such as the American College of Pediatricians. This pseudoscientific group, a strong advocate for conversion therapy, has been classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Its deceptive name is expressly designed to confuse legislators into mistaking it for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the respected medical organization representing the vast community of pediatricians across the United States.
