Part two
Please read this webtoon because I don't have any other people that know this webtoon which is a crime btw...I recommend it to you, it's very cool!
the reader is also a boxer and russian, just like Elijah, for those who are wondering.
Your name is going to be Milana Marinova in this, alright? Write in the comments if you want another name. I will also write the way you look in my own style, as in long dark hair and big muscles.(but I don't know if I even described the reader's appearance??) And uh, my russian is not the best so if you're russian or can speak and write it, please correct me if I made a mistake on that.
Also don't believe the nonsense I'll be writing about sports and fighting because I'm a couch potato.

"Yo, check this out Elijah!", V-Cube's voice called, pulling the russian out of his thoughts. He was beating up a punching bag, after all.
"Yeah? What's up-", and his eyes widened.
They were looking at the video of a female boxer, who made short process out of her opponent. she was beating into her opponent with a vigor that Elijah only knew when an axe, a hammer, or he used when he was angry. And the girl also did it unbelievably fast. That girl was you.
But who were you?
"Who is that?", he only asked. He had to look at you again- you were rather pretty, to be honest. Your long boxer braids were swaying according to your punches, which were quick, short, but impactful.
"That? It's Milana Marinova. She's the first female russian lightweight champion, with 35 wins and not a single loss. And she's pretty young as well. I think she's becoming 20 this year... I think."
'What? 35 wins?! And not a single loss?!?'
"Who are you guys- Mila?! Awww!", Kublai's voice exclaimed. His eyes sparkled and he looked at you through the screen with a fond expression.
How did Kublai of all people know you?
"You know her?", Elijah and V-Cube asked.
Kublai laughed. "Know her? She's my best friend! And! She told me that she'd come here after she's beating up that girl. I'm so excited! Elijah, she could also teach you how to fight! And to be honest;"
And Kublai made a dramatic pause,
"Beating up her opponents is not even warm up to her. She's wanted to fight against some of the fighters here for a long time. And tomorrow she's coming here! Aw I'm so excited!!"
'huh, that's the first time I've seen Kublai so excited...! And Milana teaching me...that could be good!'
"That would be a good idea, to be honest! I'm pumped to fight now!", the black haired boy exclaimed before he ran back to his punching bag. But all the while he was beating it up, he couldn't help but think about you.
You were rather pretty. very pretty. How you beat up that girl like it was no problem...that was hot. Or how you smirked towards the camera with your sharp canines glinting in display. Elijah shuddered.
He also tried to punch as fast as you, but his were mediocre at best when compared to yours.

"..li....eli....ELIJAH!!"
"AHHHH!- I'M AWAKE I'M AWAKE!!"
Right above the dark haired boy stood Kublai. His eyes were wide open, sparkling, and he had a big smile on his face. Kublai looked more scary than ever. "Wake up! She's coming today!!!"
The young boxer looked to the side, and out the window, where he couldn't see anything. "What time is it...?"
"Ten minutes past midnight!"
"What the hell, man...?", He grumbled as he turned his back to Kublai. That man only snickered before dragging him out. Elijah hit his head on the ground and hissed, to his kidnapper's joy. "Maybe that'll wake you up!"
And that's how he found himself sleepily nudging a punching bag. "...the others aren't awake, are they?"
"Nope, but Milana will come any moment now!"
"Don't you think that she'll come at a more...reasonable hour? It's barely past one-"
With a click, the back door opened, and an all too familiar face poked in. When you caught Kublai's happy stare on you, you smiled as well. After you closed the door as quietly as possible and closing it again with one of the hairpins you didn't use, you immediately yeeted yourself at Kublai.
You two giggled and whisper-yelled towards each other.
"I can't believe I'm here today! feels illegal, hihiihihihihii!"
"It's so good to see you again! What else did you to in Tokyo!?"
"I was woking on your problem, actually! But seriously, getting banned from Japan because of what you pulled?! That's not like you, Kublai!"
"I'm sorry..."
"You were rather nice with that message, I think I would've shot glass splitters at them or something!"
"Argh, why didn't I think of this?!?!", and he bonked his head.
And you two giggled like what you were talking about were crushes at a sleepover.
Kublai then lead you to Elijah, who stood where he was the whole time (🧍🏻♂️), and he blushed. You were actually...small! But you were much more pretty than what he saw on video. And you had a pretty toned body as well.
"Minya savut Milana Marinova, nice to meet you!", you spoke in russian. Elijah blinked at you. 'you were russian?! Ah-- V-Cube said that as well- Uh-'
"S-sorry, I'm not that fluent in russian..."
"Ah, thank god, me neither!"
and you two chuckled. "Say, where are your suitcases and stuff?"
"I came here alone. They'll come around 1 pm. and it's now...?"
"a few minutes past 1 am."
"So...what are we gonna do now? Eat? Or fight?"

"Argh- Oi- Ouch!", was all Elijah could muster up before he was met with another of your dozen punches. And they were as light as you made them to be. He made a time-out sign and you stopped. You guys were fighting without gloves.
"My punches feel like needles on your skin, don't they?"
"Yeah...but...how?"
"Because of my small fists. I don't punch you with the back of my fingers, but with my joints. Wether the ones which are more towards my hand, or even sometimes the pointsies.", you explained as you pointed towards the knuckes which started on the back of your hand, then the ones in the middle and then the tips of your fingers themselves.
"Also, I'm not that strong [-yes bitch you are], so I lay more pressure on the speed as well as vital points. Let's call them hot spots. You felt the most pain in your liver, I also go for the sternum. It's just-- my personal favourite, hehe."
"So, you like attacking the hot spots? But you punched me all over!"
"Yeah, that's because I couldn't find your weak spot. If I punched you close to your eye, it would've been critical for your fight with that Ethan guy. If I press too hard on your shoulder joints, I might dislocate them. In my opinion, you kind of remind me of a Zombie..."
"That's what Kublai said aswell!"
"Well, figures. You are also...kind of, I dunno how I should put it...not there. You're not in the fight, Elijah."
He frowned. "What do you mean? I'm totally in it!"
You shook your head as you looked up to him. "You're getting distracted by something in your head. Have you tried meditating? Maybe that'll clear your head!"
"Yeah, there is actually something that's bugging me...but meditating? you think that'll help?", he lied.
You were the one in his mind. He just couldn't fight against a pretty thing like you. He'd also gladly get his ass kicked by you if he could get so close as to take another sniff at your sweet orange perfume.
"It's worth a try!"
Cue to you, Elijah and Kublai sitting on yoga mats and meditating. As you were giving Elijah instructions on how to better his breathing, as well as when to hold his breath, Kublai was doing bizarre positions. But none of you two paid him any mind.
"Where are you imagining yourself, Elijah?"
"Fighting-"
"I thought I told you to pretend that you're in a forest."
"Ah--sorry. it's just...I don't know. I feel like I have to prove something, even when this is just an excercise...", Elijah mumbled, closing his eyes, and tightening his fists.
"I think that you're maybe too obsessed with fighting? And having to prove something such as 'Just you wait, I'll climb to the top in no time!', do you mean something like that?", you ask as you slowly stand up and go behind him.
"Yes! And I'm really trying to concentrate on meditating, but, I-I just can't-", he suddenly stopped when he felt your cold hands touch his abdomen, which twitched at the contact. A shiver went down his spine when your hand went a little lower.
"You're not even breathing right now. Are you okay?"
"Y-yeAh!", and he cursed himself for having a voice crack at the most unfortunate time. You only 'hmpf!'ed annoyedly by his lack of enthusiasm.
"You need to take this seriously, Elijah. Otherwise I can't help you. We will do some breathing excercises now.", cue to you taking a very deep breath. (he was glad that you didn't address his voice crack.)
He breathed in as deeply as possible, just like you. And as slowly as you could did you breathe out. He also tried imitating your movements, but he found it hard when you put one hand on where his heart was and the other on his diaphragm. His breath hitched.
"Sorry, I-I'll try again-", but he cut himself off when he turned his head and looked straight into your eyes. he could lose himself in them forever. You were eerie calm. You took your hands off him -much to his dismay- and sat yourself beside him.
"How about you go back to sleep? Today might be another exhausting day." "But I thought we could train-"
"How about you take a little rest? It's past three already. Try to sleep as much as possible, alright?"
How could he say no when you asked him so nicely? And he couldn't win against you anyways... So, with a defeated sigh, he stood up and took his waterbottle. "Uh. Kublai, you comin'?"
"In a minute!", his comrade said as Kublai tried to detangle himself. He truly became a human bretzel. You snickered at your best friends antics.
After Kublai managed to stand upright after being free, he jogged over to Elijah. "Mila, is it okay if I leave the tidying to you?"
"Sure thing, here's nothing but yoga mats anyway!"
"Okay, see you later!"
"Bye! And get some rest, you two!"
And after Kublai closed his door, he looked at Elijah with mischievousness. "You like her."
The russian spluttered. "W-wha-!?! No! W-what makes you s-say that!??!", Elijah laughed awkwardly.
Kublai acted like he thought it through. Then he grinned at Elijah.
"Well, for one, she's really pretty to begin with. Two, everybody with at least one half braincell could tell you were enjoying her touching you -even when you made her mad in the process- and three, you didn't ask "who?". That means that you like Milana."
Dang it. 'Is my crush on her that obvious? I don't even know her that well!'
"A...and what if I do...?She must have a boyfriend by now-"
"She has yet to smile at a boy other than us. And well, you can guess yourself lucky that we're the first two who she smiled at. Should I tell you the story on how I met her?! It's the funniest thing ever!"
Elijah sighed, and nodded with a heavy blush. He still couldn't believe that he fell for someone he didn't even know properly. All he knew from you was your name, age, and that you won 35 times, with no losses.
"I think it was in a small village, close to the caspian sea-"
"Where's that?"
"...don't you have geography??"
"uh, about that-"
"In russia, you oaf. Anyways, as I was saying -but got rudely interrupted by you- (Kublai pouted at Elijah with a frown to which the younger male apologized sheepishly) I met her when she was, maybe sixteen? Yeah, something around that age I met her. She beat up a few men who were actually five times stronger than her. But she still managed to beat them. She also didn't really look like the other villagers around her. She looked rather european, so I approached her in english and asked why she beat those guys up. Mila just answered that they were looking at her mother funny.
And not only that. I could see that she didn't really know how to use those fists, she needed to control them. Do you want to see a pic I took of the beat up men?!"
"Ah, s-sure..."
After a few seconds of Kublai scrolling down his gallery, did he tap on one picture with three overweight, grotesque looking men. It wasn't their normal look, but what you did do them. One's eye seemed to have reached it's brain. The other one on the ground seemed to have no teeth at all -maybe because you punched right in his mouth? Because of your small fists?- and the third one's nose was also smashed. And not only their faces were deformed. Their legs were in unhuman angels, from one of the mens' ears came blood, and the other man's arms were rolled together.
Did you put them into a tornado? There's no way a sixteen year old girl like you could've done that!! Kublai sensed his disbelief. He swiped to the right, where he clicked on a video.
It showed you beating up those thugs. In the background people were shouting, and your mother, he guessed, called your name in a desperate and pleading manner.
"poshalusta ostanoviy Milana!", your mother yelled, but you seemed deadset on making those guys suffer. He saw then how you turned one guy's arm into litreal flour. [don't ask how/me, just imagine being badass and doing shit like that]
After the video ended, Kublai looked at Elijah's terrified expression. He laughed. "welp, that's Mila when she was sixteen. Now she's a killing mashine. I can say with pride that I was the one who got her into wrestling.
And, well, she became something like a little sister to me. And you should've been there when I tried to persuade her parents to join me in my travelling. I-I still have no idea how I managed to do that, but what's counting is that she's with us!"
Elijah thought back to when you and Kublai giggled upon your meet-up. You two acted like siblings, that was for sure.
"I'm glad too. Now I have her as an ace up my sleeve and she can teach me cool tricks! I'll beat Ethan in no time!"
"That's what I want to hear! And now back to you crushing on her!"
Elijah flinched and felt his cheeks warm up. "C-c'mon, man, I'm not-"
"if you dare to touch her in any way other than training, I will have no other choice but to rip out your throat, your heart, and pop your balls."
Kublai smiled at the russian with an innocent smile after that. elijah didn't know who he was more terrified of now. You, or your "older brother"?

"So...you're Milana Marinova? The chick who beat 35 people?"
"Oh, I actually beat wayyyy more people than 35, Mr. Rumsfeld, but yeah!"
The Alpha-male laughed heartily. "Ahahahaha, of course you'd beat more people-"
"She actually killed a few!", Kublai chimed in. You smiled up at the man in front of you innocently.
His smile strained as he looked down on you. He started to sweat a little. "R-really?"
"I had to serve as a bounty hunter. To my defense, I only killed like...thirteen?", you looked over to Kublai.
"Fourteen."
"Fourteen men. And they were Rapists, Child molesters and overall just very bad guys."
"Y-you're joking...right?", the mullet-man said, unsure if he felt safe around you or not.
I mean, you were what, twenty? You were basically still a child...! And why does Kublai know about your past?! Are you two siblings or something???
But you just smiled at him. Then you broke out in giggles. Rumsfeld was scared of a little girl. Take that, "Alpha male".
A blonde boy came up to you then, holding a notebook with a marker. "Um, M-miss Marinova? Privyet, minya savut-"
"Vasily Vadymovych Vovchanchyn, da? It's a pleasure to meet you.", you smiled, extending your hand towards the taller male. You actually knew him because you watched his tournaments. And because you watched the first few episodes, where they got interviewed. You cooed when you saw a smiling Vasily. He was one of the "cute" fighters if the tournament. Your judgement.
"You're a master of sport in combat sambo, right? Can you teach me a view tricks of yours?"
But Vasily only blushed. He couldn't believe that his favourite female fighter recognized him on the spot. Let alone spelled his name correctly on the first try. Or even asked him about his fighting. Vasily thought he could die happy now. "Ah! S-sure..! eh-", he only made out as you gently took his notebook from him and the marker as well. You wrote your name in nomal...and what was that other thing you drew-

'A heart?! Does she like me perhaps?! NO! I-I don't even know her, I mean I do! But maybe she just meant it platonically! Yeah, that might be it!', Vasily thought before you gave him back his belongings. For a brief moment, your fingers touched, and Vasily flinched. His body went into overheat and he knew that he was sweating an awful lot.
You quickly retracted your hands. "Sorry, can't really warm my cold hands.", you chuckled as you did jazz-hands. The blonde only shook his head no. "I-It's alright, really!"
Elijah watched you two with a weird feeling in his stomach. He respected Vasily, but he didn't like how the blonde blushed and was acting all shy with you. And you weren't even against it. Maybe you were into blondes...?

"Yesho adin, Elijah!"
"What does that even mean?!-Ouch!"
"Another one, and now stop asking questions and let me catch these hands!"
Again, Elijah got beat up by you. Mr. Trevor, Elijah's coach, was glad that you were there to help at first, but regretted it when he saw how brutal you "trained" with his fighters. Mr. Trevor didn't even want to fight against you himself.
"A-ah, Milana, how about you be a little...tamer with him?"
"But Uncle, I am holding the receiving gloves, while Elijah is the one who has the boxing gloves...how much more tame can I be?"
"How about...you don't verbally abuse him?"
You looked at Elijah. "Did I verbally abuse you? If yes, then sorry."
Elijah pouted at Mr. Trevor. "She's not verbally abusing me!", and he huffed. But, Mr. Trevor could see a tinge of red dusting his fighter's cheeks. He stood a little too close to you, he also crouched so that he could be a little closer to your eye level. The trainer then looked at you, who looked at him and Elijah with an uneasy smile.
A lightbulb switched on in Mr. Trevor's head.
'So that's why you're acting like a brat...'
With raised hands in a giving-up motion, Trevor clears his throat. "Sorry, I shouldn't interrupt this little session you have with her.", Mr. Trevor said while having a fatherly grin which didn't mean good news. Elijah flinched and got a red face. With flailing hands and a slightly raised voice did Elijah try to make the older man stay, but to no avail.
"I-it's not what you think! I-"
"Safe it! I'll ask Kublai about it!"
"Wait, DON'T- aaannnd he left.", the russian deadpanned.
You chuckled awkwardly. "Uhm, what was that just now?"
Elijah seemed to be a scaredy-cat, because he flinched again, to which you flinched. "Eli-" "Sorry! Coach Trevor doesn't know what he's talking about!"
You would've understood it better if the boy in front of you waved his hand around dismissively and laughed.
But no. Elijah stared at you like he was being held at gunpoint as he explained his coach's behavior.
"Ou-kay?", you said in an asking tone, before you raised your hands this time. "Wanna keep training or do you want to take a break?"
"Uh--let's train-" *BONK* "...seriously?"
You bonked him with one of your receiving gloves. "We were training for about three hours now, Elijah. Eat and drink something, it's going to be lunchtime soon, alright?"
The boy nodded with a defeated sigh. "Say, Milana...I-I wanted to ask you something. And I don't want to sound rude or anything, I'm just curious! And, well, if you don't want to answer then it's fine with me too! I mean, I'd like to ask you a personal question, although I don't know if it even is personal or not? I just-"
"Gosh, Elijah, I'm not going to bite your head of for one little question.", you exclaimed as you pulled the gloves off. You then helped him take his off too. When you were done, you looked into his eyesand you noticed what a beautiful touch of blue they were.
you also noticed his right brow which was shorter than the left. You wanted to know the story behind it. Otherwise, you found it kinda cute...Elijah was actually kinda cute...and handsome-
'Was Elijah always this good-looking...?'
"What I wanted to ask was---why are you fighting, like--wh-what is your reason?!"
"Do you really want to know?", you said. But something seemed...off. Why was your tone so...suggestive?
Elijah felt his cheeks heat up as you stepped closer. "Y-yes...!", the boy stuttered, and although he had a bigger body than you, he felt himself shrinking by your uh, gaze? You just stepped closer to him until his back met the wall.
"M-Milana-", but you shushed him as your head came close to his ear. He could smell your light smell of sweat (he must've been stinking then), he could count your droplets of sweat on your shoulder, and he felt overall a little overstimulated as you did something somilar as a kabedon. Your light breath reached his ear and he shuddered involuntarily. 'What are you-'
"If you want to know why I am fighting, then...wait until the author finds motivation to keep writing."

PLEASE do the toontown online rant i want it so badly
this post kinda got away from me, and by "got away from me" i mean this 3000 word toontown rant is Part One. there will be a Part Two to this later in which i actually talk about the fanservers i wanted to talk about. anyway let's go
toontown online (tto) was a children's mostly-turn-based subscription MMO released in 2003. after a few years of obviously being on life support, disney gave a one-month notice that tto (and several other games) would be closing on september 19th, 2013. on the same day the game closed, the fan-run server toontown rewritten (ttr) was announced (with multiple other fanservers/fangames/reimaginings being established since), and is a few months away from outliving the original game
see, one thing about tto that allowed fanservers to crop up so quickly and easily was that it had, um, interesting choices. very interesting choices. like, "kids could use a code injector to turn their backyards into giant mashed-together nightmarescapes"-level choices

but ok let's talk about the actual game first.
toontown online (tto)
the game starts with you creating your player character - you can pick from eventually-9 species, a couple body types, and 2 dozen preset colors. the gender code is a spaghetti nightmare but you won't learn this until the fanservers come about so don't worry about it. you're then taken to the Toontorial, which explains maybe 20% of the game's mechanics before setting you loose into the main game
the toontorial also gives you the basic "plot", such as it is: Toontown is suddenly* under attack by a bunch of boring businessrobots called the Cogs. their goal is to turn toontown into a dreary gray featureless corporate hell; their business activities are so boring that they're physically painful to be around. luckily, they can't take a joke, so the toons have figured out how to defeat them: by playing pranks on them until they laugh so hard they Explode
*originally, the game installer had a little animation giving a backstory for the Cogs' creation. this was never referenced in game, removed pretty quickly, and i think even the devs kinda forgot it existed
that's...pretty much the whole story! in that context, your toon progresses through all of toontown, helping some mostly-pretty-interchangeable shopkeepers, reclaiming buildings from the cogs, eating ice cream, etc. occasionally, the cogs would Come Up With New Tricks (read: major content update) and the toons would Find A Way To Fight Back (read: same major content update). that was the closest thing to Plot, unless you count "the devs scheduled a bunch of invasions of high-tier cogs right before the game's closure". but...i doubt most the kids really expected a Plot. mickey mouse was there
the gameplay:
the Free Account
there were two...pretty different approaches to playing toontown online. when the game launched, there was a 3-day free trial to the entire game, after which you got kicked entirely until you subscribed. at some point, this was changed so that the first area, Toontown Central (TTC), was Always Free - you could do all of that area's quests/"taskline" and limited activities, indefinitely, and in theory this would make you beg your parents for the rest of the game
i have no idea if this actually got more subscriptions or not. from what i can tell it just spawned more warrior cats

there were. a Lot of warrior cats. there were some other social activities, too, such as Fashion Shows (with your limited range of clothes) and Begging Subscribed Players To Summon Cog Buildings To TTC and Getting Chat Banned. ...however, as one of the subscription kids i didn't really interact with this side of the game, so i'm not the best person to talk about it
2. the Paid Account
mmm look at those crisp clear graphics. hell yes
a subscription account gave you access to this whole map, along with all these areas' tasklines. to progress through the game, you must complete a variety of "ToonTasks" for the Toon Resistance (it's called that. their catchphrase is "Toons of the World, Unite!". you were giving disney money for this). these reward you by increasing your max health (your "Laff Points"), slowly unlocking more combat options, and sending you to different, higher-difficulty areas of toontown
some of these tasks were...longer than others. generally, though, they all boiled down to: "just go fight some cogs"

toontown battles are turn-based: the players use their attacks ("gags") first, and then any surviving cogs attack you with, usually, office equipment and puns thereof (unless the cog is e.g. a Loan Shark, in which case they can just fucking bite you). if you defeat a cog, it explodes; if the cog defeats you, you "go sad" and are sent back to the safety of the playground, lose your gag inventory, and can't leave until you heal.
early on, most your battles are 1v1, but later on almost everything is a multiplayer 4-ish-v-4.
an...interesting feature here in the game's early days was that you could only Type Your Own Words to someone who shared their "friend code" with you IRL. otherwise, you had to use this thing:

you had a set list of phrases you could string together, which generally covered most the things you wanted to say. but it could get frustrating when you wanted to have a real conversation with your toontown friends! so...as the source above mentions, people obviously found ways around the system. turns out that if you let players move objects around their houses, they will use that to Draw Letters and pass their friend code along regardless
eventually - before the warrior cats, of course - disney presumably realized this system was pretty goofy (🥁) , so the game got a real chat, albeit one that functioned on a very strict whitelist. my favorite is that it didn't let you type numbers, however you could just say won too tree for hive etc. like. disney i really don't know what to tell you. anyway

cogs come in levels 1-12, with levels displayed above their heads, and as you'd expect their damage output and HP increase with their level. however, the game doesn't...actually show you cog HP? instead they have a little colored light on their chest that fades from green to red until they explode. you see numbers on all the damage you do, and you see your own HP/laff, but never the cogs'. also lategame cogs are Too Tall For You To See Their Level once they line up for battle (which isn't actually that bad but it's funny). there's a formula for HP per level, but it's never mentioned in-game. i guess someone can teach it to you but then you have to watch them type "a level tin cog has won tree too health" and is that really worth it
(as you can tell i just…don't get this. "my kid is practicing arithmetic with toontown!" - marketing angle expressly denied by god. the stealth edutainment was right there)
anyway! in theory, you have seven base combat options ("gag tracks"), which combine in a variety of ways:
toon-up, which restores your teammates' health;
trap, which does guaranteed high damage but only if someone uses lure;
lure, which stuns the cogs for a few turns and is the only way to make trap work
sound, which does low damage to every cog;
throw, which does medium-high-ish damage to one cog; multiple throws combined give percentage combo damage, and hitting a lured cog will also add percentage "knockback damage";
squirt, which is exactly like throw but less damage;
and drop, which does high damage but cannot hit lured cogs, and has low accuracy unless you hit the cog with something else first
each gag track has 6 levels, which you unlock by using that gag track a bunch. you can't carry as many of the high levels with you - i mean, putting one piano in your backpack makes perfect sense, but two is just silly, right
a few years into the game's lifespan, level 7s were added - these were huge AOE that you could regain with every 500 track EXP. there was also something called "organic gags" to promote the please-log-in-every-day gardening system
every player starts with throw and squirt, and throughout the game you slowly unlock four more gag tracks. your choices are permanent: once you have your six tracks, you're locked out of the seventh forever.
in theory, all of this opens up a huge variety of combat options!
in practice, the battle strategy looks something like this:
use sound
as mentioned, almost all of lategame will be 4v4 battles, which means sound will almost always outdamage everything on earth. you don't even need four foghorns (the highest normal sound gag) to break 200 AOE damage, and the highest health a cog EVER has is 200*. and two of the boss battles can reward you with gag restocks and heals that you can use mid-battle with no consequences (other than having to grind for those rewards a bunch). and failing THAT, you can just...ration your foghorns and take 2 turns to clear a set of cogs, interspersed with healing.
(*okay there was something called "v2.0 cogs" but they were...strange, and we just used sound anyway)
sure, once level 7s were added you could use those occasionally. and you could fall back on lure+throw if you didn't want to use your sound restocks. but even then, for most of tto's existence there was something called the "knockback bug" which. well. just look at it

if you are a target-audience eight-year-old this translates to "lure + throw will only do enough damage if the cogs Feel like it." like it's really just insult to injury at this point. this was the result of One misplaced variable and was not fixed until the game closed
in the tto era, if you didn't have sound, you were kinda doomed to be kicked out of every fight forever
(bonus fun fact: there were Four entire battle themes and they were 40-second midi loops. let me out)
the bosses:
each of the four cog departments has a Boss Cog. to face off against them, you have to assemble a cog disguise and collect enough merits/stock options/whatever to be allowed into the boss's office.

when you enter, your disguise pops off due to Reasons, and you have to fight through...a bunch of waves of normal cogs. it's basically a really long normal battle. once the minions are dealt with, you have to, inexplicably, do a live-action battle against the boss themself:

the live-action rounds aren't supposed to go this quickly, but it's still...kinda strange? certain reoccurring game areas require Parkour, but there are no battles like this outside of the Four bosses. the CFO's room is the only place you see these cranes and they have A Lot Going On. the other 3 bosses have their own unique weird mechanics. before the first boss was added we neither had nor needed the ability to Jump. it's just weird
once you've defeated the boss, you're given a reward of varying usefulness (the best/most unbalanced reward type is Unites, which are a free heal or gag restock you can do inside or outside of battle. essentially lategame toons can simply choose not to die. riv2u etc.)
and, um. then you get some more merits/stock options/whatever and do it again. and again. and again. and again. and agai
the grind:
so the thing is that tto was a subscription mmo. every addition to the game had to be measured, above all, in terms of "how can we best get kids to beg their parents to give us money." this especially shows in the suit grind:

you have to defeat each boss 78 times in order to get all their laff points - and as you proceed, you have to defeat an increasing amount of cogs to even be allowed into the boss (although once you max you get in for free).
by far the easiest way is to run through the designated HQ facilities - basically, cog fights interspersed with some platforming or minigames. you only collect your merits/whatever at the Very End of the facility. the only way to increase what a facility gives you is if your last battle ends during an "invasion" - a timed period where One Specific Cog replaces all street cogs, usually summoned with boss rewards.
the sellbot HQ grind isn't so bad. bossbot HQ - the endest-game HQ - frequently requires you to do an hour-long facility and on six separate occasions you have to do seven of them. if the invasion ends before your final battle, you have to sit around until someone summons another. if you lose your internet connection because it's 2008, or if your parents make you come to dinner, or if hacking or the game's general bugginess cause a server reset because you're probably in the busiest district for the invasion bonus, you have spent that Entire Hour On Nothing. the CEO (bossbot cog boss) probably also takes an hour because you and your fellow players are 10
this shit, combined with laff points locked behind gardening (time-gated), racing and golfing (multiplayer minigames with absurd requirements), and fishing (RNG-based with some fish being absurdly rare. i watched my mom fish for one every day for a month), meant that maxing a toon took Years, if you managed it ever.
it wasn't, um. it wasn't good
ok so what else is wrong with this game:
i had "aged out of the game" (lol) by the early '10s, so i'm not the best person to do a writeup of the hacking/scripting situation of those days. that said, what i'm going to do is give you a few examples, and i want you to just...look at them

the above video was posted on august 17th, 2013. if you don't want to watch an Unregistered Hypercam 3 recording at about 5 frames per second, what's going on here is:
the player goes to a specific location and says a specific speedchat phrase.
a bot toon teleports to their location and provides some prompts on how to use it
the player tells the bot, via speedchat, to teleport to the (currently closed from the outside) busiest district so the player can follow
these "taxi toons" were server-sided, persisted across server resets, were made by a future fanserver dev, had younger kids referring to them as a "glitch" as if this were something that could Accidentally Happen, and stayed functional until the game closed
like...a lot of the "hacking" was just baby's first script download. this one - afaict also created by the laughing man head guy - is like...the fact that after years of no substantial game updates, someone effectively programmed their own "QOL feature" (note: not actually good for the poor mid-00s server being turned into a clown car) into a silly disney MMO and it just fucking sat there for a year is just. it's just.
i don't know what this is. this is not Playing The Game Toontown Online. this is nothing. this is everything. there are comments from 2013 on some of these videos saying stuff like "hackers killed toontown", but your game cannot have this happen if it is not already dying
and, like...it was. i'm not sure how many moderators there were by this point, but at the very end of tto, the number of active devs was One. the original devteam recently brought this up at the 20th anniversary celebration: devs just...slowly started getting pulled from the game, one at a time. there were a few updates after bossbot HQ - Field Offices, which i've basically never heard anything good about in their tto form ever; the Silly Meter, a yearly event...thing whose main function was to add unskippable dancing-inanimate-object cutscenes to your street battles; Parties, which...yknow parties were okay actually. i accept parties. but they weren't exactly a Major Game Update like the ones that had come before. in 2011 we gained the ability to Wear Hats. in 2012 the test server got some actual QOL updates that never made it to the main game; the final test server update was some maintenance in february, and then nothing for 18 months. disney was not providing enough resources to address the scripting because disney was not providing enough resources to address toontown. imagine being the last dev standing on an MMO that was older than some of its players, was losing its business model to mobile gaming, and spent most of its life falling apart at the seams. just imagine it, for a second
it couldn't have kept going, not like this.
on august 20, 2013, the closing announcement came: we had a month left of toontown online. the test server shut immediately; subscription refunds went out, and the game became actually F2P for the month; the part of the announcement that went like "we're shifting our focus to other games!" made a bunch of twelve-year-olds hate club penguin as if club penguin wouldn't also close in a few years; all the holiday events went off at once; and...
there wasn't a "thanks for playing!" popup. everyone online just got kicked, all at once. it was finally over

Pffft (well, he’s 'nice' in bursts, as in a burst of tentacles through Brad’s face). In seriousness, in my take on him, he’s complicated, having the ability to be kind, and caring but is a Tyrant through and through - basically closer to canon. I like canonical villains and I like my monsters monstrous and, at times, barely grasping that human/monster line. Expect infestations and murder.

i’m not in this fandom like that so I didn’t know rick previously said he wasn’t going to write anymore. but is it you feel like he’s milking it? maybe it’s bc i’m more in anime/manga fandoms, but for example it’s common for mangaka to write light novels to accompany their story to add details to characters backgrounds or answer questions that aren’t in the manga, but I would never the concept of it bad writing or disrespectful….isn’t it just expanding the story? maybe I’m just not getting your point. i agree the audience shouldn’t be spoon fed, but nico still having nightmares & hearing voices & planning on going to tartarus seems too big of a plot point to be ignored. & chalice of the gods - that I agree with the spoon feeding, but it’s just simple fanservice, maybe rick missed writing those characters or maybe it’s money idk but I feel like a lot of the fandom looks forward to reading more about Percy, i dont think majority feel disrespected by it. (please also i’m not trying to berate you for not liking tsats and chalice im just curious!)
My problem isn’t that it feels like Rick is milking the series - though he absolutely is. He explicitly stated on his blog that Disney asked him to publish Chalice of the Gods as Percy promotion for the Disney+ show adaptation - but the fact that the way it’s being gone about feels cheap.
I get what you mean by comparing manga, but manga is ultimately a different media form. Manga and comics in general tend to lean more expositional by nature because that’s what’s required of the medium. This also means there’s a lot more room for those kinds of extra content series because the medium inherently provides space for them. That can also be a thing in novels as well - I was in Warrior Cats fandom. Warriors has tons of extra content books and novellas (and manga!). I read Animorphs, which also has lots of extra content books (and 52 books in the main series). I am very familiar with series that have a lot of books and bonus content and etc. But the thing with those extra content books is a.) it’s really easy for them to be bad in the exact same way i was mentioning, where details feel forcibly spoon-fed to you, and b.) they need to provide something new, otherwise they just feel like cheap additions that you’re better off skipping over, and if you do skip them you don’t loose anything. And this is 100% true for manga too! It’s a really common problem!
The point is these books don’t expand the story. We aren’t learning anything new that we wouldn’t be able to extrapolate anyways, and it is okay that we don’t know everything happening in the series. We don’t need to know the Exact Specifics of how Nico and Will got together, or how Percy did his college applications. And this has been true in the series before! We don’t know what happened on Clarisse’s quest in TTC. We don’t know what happened to Reyna and Hylla between Circe’s Island and Camp Jupiter, or even how they got to Circe’s Island in the first place. We still don’t know what happened in Albania. And all of that is fine. Nothing is lost as a result of us not knowing those answers. Heck, actually a great example - in TLO, Nico tells Percy he’s been exploring California looking for leads on his family. We’re told he has a new lead, and then he never brings it up again. We as the audience can presume this was relating to Hazel, but the important part is: We are never told what exactly Nico was doing. We know he was doing some very important personal stuff in California, and that’s it. Even if we presume it was relating to Hazel, there’s still huge gaps in that we don’t know about, like how Nico brought Hazel to Camp Jupiter, how Nico found out about Camp Jupiter in the first place, or how he discovered the Doors of Death were open at all. We know none of that. And that’s a good thing! Because we don’t need to! It’s completely irrelevant and adds nothing more to the story! We know everything we need to know about that and that’s it.
That’s how the end of TOA should have been. Yes, we get a cliffhanger that Nico has some personal destiny stuff, but we’re also explicitly not told the prophecy. That should have been the end of it, and it was SUPPOSED to be the end of it! We’re not gaining anything new by having Nico go to Tartarus again - we’ve seen a popular ship go to Tartarus already (Percy and Annabeth). We know what’s down there. We know what Nico experienced down there. We already know everything we need to know. There’s no point to this. Especially since there’s so many elements of the already established canon that emphasize that the alleged goal of their quest is pointless to begin with. We know what’s going to happen already. We can extrapolate. We don’t need a whole book or 3-book series to explain it to us - that’s the part that’s disrespectful to the audience. It’s saying that You Need To Be Told Exactly What Happens Because We Do Not Trust You To Be Able To Figure It Out On Your Own.
You brought up a great word, actually - It feels like fan-service. And that’s a bad thing. Fan-service is not a good thing - it is almost always bad writing with no heart in it, just spoon-feeding the audience, and it’s disrespectful to the readers. TSATS just feels like solangelo fan-service by trying to make it Percabeth 2 and dancing Will and Nico around in front of the audience a bit more. We aren’t gaining anything new, and there’s no reason to bother with TSATS when you can get the exact same thing or more from fanworks. At best, TSATS could have maybe worked as a short story like Sword of Hades, or we could have gotten a Will short story like how The Stolen Chariot gave us more depth on Clarisse. But as it stands currently, it’s just cheap. It just feels like excuses for Rick to explicitly canonize random things because he doesn’t trust us to figure it out as being coded (this teeters dangerously on the JK Rowling approach), or shoehorn in myths he hasn’t used yet, which he was already doing in TOA and that turned out racist at worst and a mess at best.
There are absolutely extra content novellas I would love to see. Everybody’s been asking for a roman series for ages. A Reyna-POV 3 book Roman series would work perfectly and actually provide something for the collective series, because it’d actually give us some reasons to care about the Roman camp and maybe Jason’s backstory and further flesh him out as a character. I mentioned Clarisse’s quest from TTC earlier - do we lose anything by not knowing what happened on her quest? No. But she’s a major side character who’s been around since book one that we know very little about, and if we need more first-series content to promote the show adaptation, that feels like a great avenue, because we can use it to explore things that we don’t know much about! Like rogue demigods and the Titan Army (with Chris), the Ares cabin (quest members), or Clarisse herself and her backstory and fleshing her out more as a character and her relationships with other beloved first-series characters like Silena and Beckendorf. We can’t get that with Will because he only joined camp right before the Battle for Manhattan (and anything saying otherwise would be an outright retcon, which is even more annoying) and nearly his entire cabin immediately died. Everything we saw in TOA is basically all we’d be able to get from Will. And we already got it - we know where he’s from, when he came to camp, who his mom is, and his relationship with both his parents and his siblings and other campers. We saw who he as a character is in TOA. Yeah, it wasn’t much, but he’s only been around since TLO and barely existed in HoO - he’s a minor character, that’s expected. But all we’re gonna get is more of the same.
Tl;dr: My problem isn’t that it feels like beating a dead horse, my problem with TSATS and Chalice of the Gods is that they feel like cheap and pointless plot lines that are inherently insulting to the audience by refusing to allow any interpretation of the intentional free space left by the narrative and at best is a blatant shoehorning-in of more myths and canonizing random things that don’t add any actual merit to the story, they’re just there to be included.

As the title of my blog states, I am a fangirl of misunderstood characters and villains. The majority of my posts will be about said characters and villains. The characters you can expect me to post the most about are Zach Varmitech (Wild Kratts), The Grinch (2018 animated version), Arthur Fleck (Joker 2019), Merrill Hess (Signs movie), Velvet and Veneer (Trolls 3), and Loki (MCU).
I’m interested in quite a few fandoms, but what you will see most frequently on this blog, as mentioned above, will usually be Wild Kratts. I also dabble in The Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman, Split 2017/Glass, Gotham, Sofia the First, Disney, and Marvel (MCU).

I have been experiencing several incredibly painful eye conditions for nearly two years that have severely limited my vision. I had two eye surgeries in 2023 to alleviate the worst of these conditions. Things have calmed down with my eyes, but I still have to take things easy in the vision department!
I have experienced several losses in my life over the past few years: two uncles, my maternal grandparents, two of my cats, a coworker and friend, and my daughter. These losses are taking a toll on me, and I am still grieving the losses.
I am also experiencing other forms of depression and anxiety in my life concerning my physical health and mental health due to my past relationship, current relationship pursuits, and now my job.
So, if you send me asks, DM me, or try to interact with me and do not get a response or get a slow response, all of this is likely why 😔. I’m not ignoring you! I’m just going through a lot!

Recently picked up Toontown Rewritten after hearing that they're adding new content later down the line (on top of revamping the horrible, horrible process of getting parts and promotions).
Initially TRIED to play a Deer but their deer just isn't as appealing as Corporate Clash's, tried a mouse then a dog before settling on a bear.
So here's Flint Twinkleglow, a brown bear whose gag track progression I haven't quite decided on yet (I'm starting with Sound for the TTC track tasks, not sure if I'm gonna go Dropless or Toonupless, that might depend on the difficulty of future content).
Coming to this after playing TTCC for a long while is kind of jarring, no orbital camera, awkward sprinting (I'd like a toggle button please!), and classic tank controls ON TOP of not being able to see exact health numbers anymore.
That said, the new combat ui is pretty nice and I do like how the buffs/debuffs are shown.
Will I stick with Rewritten in tandem with Corporate Clash? Only time will tell.

I see more and more people discussing the content of the next season. I was wondering how you would react if the story of the Timeless Child is completely changed in series 13 ? (for example, if they revealed the master lied or something )
I wonder because your characters and your plot are very solid and close to the series so far :) I guess you'll just finish your story but I think you talked about a sequel

I’m going on a bit of a tangent here, but since I talked about this a long time ago, I think this is a good time to reiterate my opinion on The Timeless Child twist.
TLDR: I’m not head over heels for it.
I really like the emotional turbulence it created in all the characters so far, especially the Doctor, it’s a useful tool for the writers to analyse character dynamic, emotivity and personality and develop them in new and interesting ways.
But the idea to delve in the Doctor’s past that deep and discover another species of super-entities from another universe is not something that interests me that much. I’d rather have Ruth!Doctor back, and discover more about that part of the Doctor’s past, rather than see where that wormhole leads to. If the show was to leave it as one of the many DW unanswered questions I’ll be happy with it.
That said...if the show retconned TTC now it would give a very wrong impression. I mean:
1- Show makes bold controversial move.
2- Angry fans complains about continuity.
3- Show immediately retcon it.
Is not a nice chain of events to see...
They could still do it, mind you, but if they do please tell me it’s not the “It was actually just a lie” thing. It is such a cheap way to create a twist on top of another twist...I can’t say I’d be thrilled.
As far as High and Dry goes, it would probably stop being canon compliant after next season’s first episode (or the next Master appearance anyway), so I’m not too worried about contradictions.
And the sequel is so far away...I can’t say if I’ll ever do it. It’s way more ambitious than H&D, and it would take much more time to draw it. If I’ll ever feel the urge to post it somewhere, it would be half-fanfiction and half-fancomic/illustrations, because it’s the only feasible way I would finish it before they cast someone else as the Doctor and the Master.

I am actually very glad Oshiro does sensitivity reading regarding homelessness and adoption, since those are actually two very forgotten aspects of Nico’s character. He was briefly legally an orphan when he was going to school in Maine in TTC, and he was homeless technically from when he immigrated from Venice all the way to Blood of Olympus when he properly moved into CHB, which is from his perspective about four years. And this is just barely acknowledged ever the entire series. This kid lived in the woods, sometimes will a hellhound, mostly will ghouls, for how long? I wanna hear more about Nico’s time as a rogue demigod. And maybe just more about rogues in general.
...really just generally more about rogues. I’m so fascinated by rogue demigods and how little we know about them in the PJO universe. Tell me more, Oshiro. Please. Give me the content.
