Character Ask Game: Obi-Wan Kenobi, 4 8 &12

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in? Obi-Wan is one of those characters that probably has been in all those other media and, of course, I always want more of him, but I think if you offered me the chance to have one new Obi-Wan project, it would be: A Star Wars Holiday Special: Obi-Wan & Anakin, where they get Ewan and Hayden to do a 45 minute special about their time as Force Ghosts, as they look on over Luke working to find Jedi artifacts, talking with him when they have the spiritual energy to pull together for it, while they look on over Ahsoka trying to process her feelings about Anakin even after all these years, while they watch over Grogu as best they can while he tries to find his path in this world without the Jedi. It would be half-serious, talking about Anakin's choices and how he had to learn to let go, that that's what it means to be a Force Ghost, you have to let go of all the hate and the rage and the fear and the guilt, that it's not about blame, but about delving into Anakin's mindset, about delving into Obi-Wan's mindset, how they both had to learn to let go of everything they were carrying around before they could move on. Obi-Wan had to do that during the series of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin had to do that during Return of the Jedi, and I'd love to see them have a conversation about how they want to help Ahsoka do the same thing. Bonus points for filming a scene of Obi-Wan watching as Vader threw Sidious down the reactor shaft and the light dawning on his face that, oh, his Padawan is coming back, that he can reach out his hand as Anakin dies, with a genuine smile and say, "Hello again, old friend. Let me help you over." But then it would be half-silly antics where they're basically Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo just roasting the hell out of all the dumbass shit they have to put up with in this galaxy. Bonus points for Anakin giving Obi-Wan the once over after they see Luke at the party on Endor's moon: "Wait, why do you look like that? Why aren't--" "I appear as the person remembers me, as they most need me to appear." "....so are you saying that everyone NEEDS me to look like the hottest holonet star on--" "[dryly] Apparently so." 8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise? Taking away his love for and belief in the Jedi ways. Obi-Wan's entire ultimate purpose is to be the contrast to Anakin's character, to be the wise Jedi mentor who doesn't have to be perfect, but is generally correct, that his purpose is to show the path that Anakin should have been on. But also, just straight up as a character, Obi-Wan loves the Jedi, that's his culture, his family, his people, he believes in the methods of the Jedi, he believes in the philosophy of the Jedi, he lives and breathes as a Jedi. And it's made him the person he is, he cherishes that, that he can regret that there isn't room for other paths in life, but that he doesn't regret the path he's on as a Jedi, that even when he considered other paths, it was with the full respect for what being a Jedi means. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi, and even if he might choose another path for himself, he always, always believes in what it means to be a Jedi, he believes that path is valuable and sacred. Taking that away from his character just fundamentally is not who he is imo.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character? Obi-Wan Kenobi is an absolute monster when it comes to playing cards. He has perfected his bland, unreadable face and sleight of hand, so you can suspect he's a dirty rotten cheater at cards, but you can never prove it. He will absolutely murder anyone and everyone at sabacc and never give away the game, he'll just blandly look at you and pretend to be losing, all until he's lulled you into a false sense of security and then he'll rob you blind and probably leave the winnings in the pocket of someone asking for change on the street. He's an absolute bastard to play cards with and Quinlan and Anakin both straight up refuse to do it anymore because it's so infuriating.

I read your opinions on Ahsoka and while I like her I agree, I think her fandom is making me dislike her, the final straw for me was reading takes that Ahsoka was Anakin's child more than Luke ever was because he spend more time with her than with Luke despite Anakin ALWAYS aknowledged Luke as his son, I mean remember the iconic "I'm your father" scene? And how after that he always called Luke in his mind as "my son"? Anakin may had not raised Luke, but he always loved his son, ever since Padmé told him that she was pregnant he considered his baby a blessing and the happiest moment of his life, so no wonder those feelings resurfaced when he found out that Luke lived between ANH and ESB, I mean, he came to the Light for him! His baby boy. I even read a Youtube comment saying that when Anakin said Luke before dying "Tell your sister...you were right..." now it refered to Ahsoka when those words were for Leia! Yes, we know Leia sees Bail as her father and has zero connection with Anakin, but even so, those final words were for her. Canonically Anakin saw Ahsoka as much a younger sister, he always refered Luke as his son and Leia as Luke's sister and thus, his daughter. I dislike reading how people are trying to server Anakin from his family (from Padmé to now Luke and Leia) to place Ahsoka in the picture, guys, you can have both! (sorry for the rant)

I totally get it. My issue with her character mainly started from the fact that she is shoehorned into anything that involves the skywalkers. Imagine if she was in the movies, I would think her arc would be very redundant in the PT because we are closely following the Jedi masters and council as well as politicians as they are central to the plot and conflict. The fact that she wasn't in it establishes she is an afterthought. And I think she wouldn't have been so bad if she was a character with a standalone arc and story but now she's just everywhere and I disliked her introduction as Anakin's padawan because the PT establishes Anakin is quite young and flawed and its his journey we are exploring from little Ani to Darth Vader throughout the six films. He is allowed to be an innocent kid, brooding emotional teenager and also a hero. He is the Chosen One but not once is he a Gary Stu, in fact he goes through phases that annoys other characters like Obi Wan. He isn't overpowered either because we see him suffer two huge defeats in the films. He makes mistakes and the wrong choices and can be selfish at times, and other times he tries to be a good padawan and follow the rules and sometimes he disregards them, he lets others boss him around too, he is scared but wants to be a good father and husband etc etc. you get the idea. He's not perfect and that's the point and I think Hayden nails the repressed monk persona. The only reason Ahsoka was introduced was part of "fixing" Anakin's character and to make him more fun but it seems so unbelievable the council would assign someone like Anakin with an impressionable youngling (who is strangely rebellious despite having the same upbringing as the rest?). I just don't see Anakin as being a big brother to anyone or bantering with kids when he seemed understandably awkward and reserved. Also, Ahsoka's thick plot armor and her continuously inflated significance just confirms how much of a creator's pet she was and her whole character (especially when she's interacting with Anakin) feels very fanficy and the fact that she has almost zero flaws and she takes over the roles of every other important person in Anakin's life in the original story. I try not to pay attention to Filoni's pet because it just feels like pure wish fulfillment for him at this point. We could just have more of other cool female jedi like Shaak Ti, Depa, Aayla, or Yaddle as they were preexisting characters and weren't dependent on the Skywalkers for their arc - because I doubt Ahsoka would have been popular at all if she wasn't Anakin's padawan or acting like an Anakin wannabe (and getting away with it almost always while Anakin the CO was given no special treatment). At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Ahsoka is revealed to be the new chosen one or she's some insanely overpowered demigod lol. And I mean I guess her fans like her for many reasons but she just feels like a Mary Sue to me like you know a character is doomed when a creator admits he's too attached to the character for anything drastic and openly shows favoritism. Let's be honest she is kind of a nepo baby and acts like one too in the SWU. I guess some people are just seeing her as one now but I always thought she would be a Mary Sue because even the emotional moments she has and the few hardships or "deep" moments she gets is just by interacting with the Skywalkers or just dealing with things everyone else is going through. So I don't really feel the emotional value if she tells Luke he is like her father when literally anyone else who knew him could have said that. At least characters like Boba don't rely on mentioning Anakin in everything they appear in. I don't think her arc would even be well developed if she was detached from the existing prequel characters so it's like she just reinforces the same emotions we should feel except she's supposed to be fun and badass so the audience and her fans would empathize with the events more.

Like do people even really like her screentime in Rebels except from her fight with Anakin? And that scene's so memorable because it's with Anakin, a much more realistic and developed character. It's really Anakin who carries the scene and the emotional impact. Replace Ahsoka with any other padawan and it seems like she has no inherent value. She only seems to shine in moments she is interacting with PT era characters due to the backstory and flashbacks and the rest of the time she's just a token strong female jedi character. What is Ahsoka when she is not breaking Jedi rules constantly like she's special or getting in Anakin's business or running into other characters and reminiscing about the past? I could watch a standalone show on Anakin, Padme, Obi Wan, Qui Gon, Yoda or even Dooku just in their solo adventures because they bring a slightly new perspective to the SWU and there's some room for individuality. I could be wrong maybe they explored some of her personal ambitions than being a Jedi and making Anakin proud but I'm really not interested when her role is just so interchangeable. Even Padme has an entire movie around her (TPM) where we see more about her. Despite being Anakin's love interest, we can see how she is a main character and can carry a film without any romance with Anakin. Same with Obi-Wan. He had an entire movie solving mysteries and plots while Anakin and Padme were romancing. That's why they should be the main prequel trio because its always been two force sensitives and a non-force sensitive member. Just like Han, Padme brings a new perspective and skills in the team.

I wouldn't be too bothered about such claims as they always existed. Ahsoka is closer to Anakin than Obi Wan, Padme, Leia and now more than Luke. It's sad and funny how far Filoni will bend space and time to make room for the OC. As far as I'm concerned, she doesn't exist.

Plus if it was possible (aka an au) what do you think Anakin's reaction would be seeing his children? After seeing both and Vivien Lyra Blair excellent portrayal of Leia my mind cannot help but rot about this and think about it nonstop

I feel like I still haven't collected my thoughts after Ahsoka episode 5 my brain is still just going !!!!!!!! after the latest episodes - and there's probably a ton of people with far more eloquent and thought out things to say but I'll be happy to ramble. See below the cut for Ahsoka series spoilers

The first couple episodes of the Ahsoka series were okay but I've lost my mind over the live action Clone Wars Anakin and I don't know that I'm ever going to recover. Visually - the episode was amazing. And I'm so in awe of Hayden. The way he portrays the duality of Anakin and Vader, because they've are and always have been the same, is perfection. The man understood his assignment from day one, and this shows it. His physicality! His change in tone! His incorporation of TCW/Matt Lanter's portrayal. I could gush/ramble praises forever.

And seeing teeny tiny baby Ahsoka was amazing. I have never been on the Jedi critical aspect of Padawans in the war effort, and that's not what I'm saying here either, but it was such a beautifully done, heartbreaking way to show the realities of war with her middle age perspective and understanding coming through reliving the traumatic experiences of her younger self.

ALSO I know there's specifically some talk around if that was really Vader or Anakin in (or just her unconscious imagination) and here's my poorly thought out and worded take: it's Anakin. Anakin as he is now, post Return of the Jedi/Vader redeemed, balanced in the Force. He understands that both light and dark have always and will always be a part of him. He teaches Ahsoka how to move on from her fear of becoming just like him and falling to her darkest parts by making her confront it - as Vader. He's not actually trying to kill her, he's using the dark as a tool, totally in control, and turns it off as soon as he doesn't need it. [I also think he's not done yet and we're going to see more of him before the season is done]

Finally - I'm not quite sure what you mean about Anakin meeting his kids. Do you mean if he had found out earlier and been able to meet them like...during the Kenobi show? Or as infants before that, and known that he hadn't really lost everything like he thought? I do have thoughts about both of those possibilities. But Force ghost Anakin has met both Luke and Leia as Darth Vader as they took down the Empire, but maybe this is my brain just being stuck on Ahsoka series/Force ghost Anakin!!! I do care about answering your question so please pop back into my inbox and set me straight so I can give it the thought it deserves!

Hi all I wanna talk about the Star Wars Celebration 2023 so-

Warnings: Spoilers, long post, not a fic, idk what else

SPOILERS!!!! SPOILERS RELATED TO ANY/ALL NEW STAR WARS CONTENT!!!

So I wasn’t really aware of Star Wars Celebration this year cuz my b-day was Friday and this past Sunday was Easter so you can bet I was excited to see the live streamed videos on Youtube. After going through most videos available, I started going online and looking at different articles and whatnot (I also saw those vids of KK walking out on stage to quiet/shame applause lol).

I hate KK with a passion so I’ve been unsure about new Star Wars projects but from what little I’ve seen, I definitely feel a bit better about the future of Star Wars (and hope KK is on her way out).

I’d like to talk about Ahsoka (live action) first. I love the concept of continuing the Rebels story. I enjoy Rebels. Not as much as Clone Wars and is about tied with Tales of the Jedi, but I definitely enjoy Rebels more than Bad Batch (which I’ll get into later).

First off, the cast for Ahsoka. I think it’s great! We’ve seen Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka (and obviously Hayden Christensen as Anakin/Vader) so I was really only wanting to see the animated Rebels characters (Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, Chopper, Hera). While Zeb wasn’t shown in the Ahsoka trailer shown, we did get about 30secs from Mando when he talks to Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s character (I forget his name). I thought Zeb looked great and loved they got Steve Blum (the original VA) to play him. The other Rebels that have been shown are Hera, Chopper, Sabine, Thrawn and a hologram image of Ezra. Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine looks amazing and Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks great as Hera. Chopper, being a droid, obviously looks great as well. Eman Esfandi as Ezra looks amazing as well. For a while, like lots of fans, I thought Mena Massoud would be Ezra (he was coming off his Aladdin success) but when Eman Esfandi got the role, I saw Massoud’s response and was put off from the guy. Massoud didn’t seem happy/polite, to me at least. Plus Esfandi looks more like Ezra than Massoud does (especially w/ the nose, eyebrows and chin). I also think Esfandi looks a lot like Ezra’s father Ephraim Bridger. Idk if Eman Esfandi’s been in anything else but I’m not put off by new actors. I think new actors can be amazing (the only disney example I can think of is Neel Sethi as Mowgli from the live action Junglebook remake from 2016).

Now for the main man, Thrawn. I know he’s a comic/Legends character but for the purpose of this post, he is animated first then shown in live action. Because he was shown in animation first, I’m always on the side of getting the VA to be their character in live action (James Sie is doing this in AtLA as the cabbage man). When I found out that Lars Mikkelsen is Thrawn I was over the fucking moon.

Controversial opinion?? Thrawn was done dirty in Rebels. I was 16 when I first watched Rebels and I definitely think he was overhyped. I know Rebels is more kid-oriented, but I’d say going into the 2nd half of S1 had a more CW-esque feel to it and definitely by the end of S2, I thought Rebels was gonna be CW 2.0. I learned that Thrawn is supposed to be cold, calculating and patient so I re-evaluated my feelings on S3 and realized that Thrawn was building up to the S3 finale. By S4 and with the introduction of the Loth Wolves, I definitely thought Thrawn should’ve made some waves at this point. I’d say that the only real damage he’s done was in the S4 finale, forcing Ezra to sacrifice himself.

I think Ahsoka is the perfect chance to show just how dangerous and lethal Thrawn can be. I HAVEN’T READ THE THRAWN TRILOGY BOOKS so everything I know about it is from wookieepedia and google. I’m wondering if they’ll bring in any Legends characters related to Thrawn (ELI VANTO!!! He’s right there c’mon).

Lastly I wanna talk about Huang, the lightsaber construction droid. We first see Huang in Clone Wars S5 with the Ahsoka/Younglings/Hondo arc. Huang definitely reminds me of the wand guy in Harry Potter, but sassier lol. I’d heard from leaks online that Huang was going to be in Ahsoka, but to actually see him was amazing. I immediately questioned if the other Younglings are still alive at this point (they’d probably be mid 30s?) We get confirmation that Gungi is alive in Bad Batch S2 E6 Tribe, so I wouldn’t say it’s impossible that the others are alive.

I know that bringing back familiar Jedi is controversial among lots of fans (feeling it takes away from O66). But I actually like it because it shows that even though O66 was planned from the beginning (w/ Sifo Dias/Dooku/Palpy), the plan wasn’t perfect (and then of course the retconning of brainwashing from prequel trilogy to inhibitor chips). I’m sure Palps never expected the inhibitor chips to degrade or that the clones would be independent thinkers. I actually like when they bring back familiar Jedi.

So, overall, I’m definitely stoked for Ahsoka. We haven’t gotten confirmation but I definitely wanna see Lothwolves, the World between Worlds, and Jacen Syndulla (Hera/Kanan’s son). I didn’t particularly like his design in Rebels (he should’ve had lekku w/ his green hair imo) so I wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t look exactly the same. I’d also like to see more clones. I’d like to see Ahsoka reunite with Wolffe, Cody, Rex and Gregor. I’d even be fine with unnamed clones.

I’m assuming Ahsoka takes place during Mando S2/3, maybe S1 was well but I’m focusing on the 2nd and 3rd season. That means the Empire has been gone for about ~7yrs (10 at most I think) and Vader is dead. I’d like to see Obiwan show up as a force ghost to Ahsoka as well. He was there for Luke after his death in ANH, but I’d argue that Obiwan loves Ahsoka just as much as Luke. I’d like to see Ahsoka using to Force to feel when Obiwan died in ANH like how she did in hyperspace, sensing Anakin’s fall in CW S7 finale. Make it painful, I wanna sob lol.

I also wouldn’t mind Ahsoka meeting Boba Fett again. They met once in S2 I believe when Boba tried to kill Mace w/ Aurra Sing and her crew. Plo Koon took Ahsoka with him to go face them and while Ahsoka and Boba argued pretty much the whole time, I think her words really got to him so I can see them starting out tense then as they get to know each other, Ahsoka would see similarities between Boba and the clones she served with and he’d be annoyed lol.

So yeah, I think those are my thoughts on Ahsoka and I don’t want this post to get super long (even though it kind of is).

The next show I wanna talk about is Skeleton Crew. I’m excited about this show but I’m more curious than excited. I love Jude Law and the idea that it takes place in some uncharted region in space is great (new planets/locations/people). I love the whole premise that Jude Law’s character protects a group of Younglings since it matches my own HC of Hondo protecting the Younglings he met. Idk who else is in this show, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. I can see them bringing in Cal Kestis in live action (with Cameron Monaghan obviously) for this show (then perhaps have him crossover with other shows like Mando/Ahsoka). I don’t know much about it so I don’t really have a lot to talk about with this show.

Now I’d like to talk about Acolyte. I saw the leaked teaser uploaded to Youtube (idk if it was taken down but I can’t find it—it was phone footage and had no commentary). I believe this show is supposed to be set during the High Republic era (350-50yrs before the Skywalker Saga). Love that timeline setting. We hardly have any canon info on that era so this is perfect. Also Acolyte is about the rise of the Sith (in a time that was considered prosperous for the Jedi) so I think that’s super interesting. I had heard that it could also have Palpatine’s origin story??? YES PLEASE!!! Given that the High Republic Era ended 50yrs before TPM, it’s possible Palps was alive at least during the end of the High Republic Era. I’d like to see his master Darth Plaguis as well and that whole story Palps tells Anakin in RotS during the bubble opera.

I saw that martial arts is going to be a major part of this show and I’m super excited. Jedi have been shown to fight hand-to-hand before but I hope martial arts connects somehow to the Force (like how AtLA uses different martial arts for the bending types). Speaking of AtLA, I’m wondering if SW is utilizing martial arts BECAUSE of AtLA’s success (the Netflix live action show, Avatar Studios). Dave Filoni (Felony) also worked on AtLA so I wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be true. But anyways, I’m also super excited for Acolyte as well.

Alright now for the animated shows.

Tales of the Jedi is confirmed for a 2nd season and reportedly there are more writers. I’m hoping that means we get either more episodes or longer episodes. I don’t believe anything else, story wise, is confirmed, but I’d love to see Jedi we didn’t quite see enough of. What I’d like to see:

—Quinlan Vos training Aayla Secura

—Mace Windu training Depa Bilaba

—Yoda/Yaddle relationship confirmation (I HC they are baby Yoda’s parents cuz obviously).

—Luminara/Barriss Offee bonding (I’ve seen so many people hate on Luminara for her treatment of Barriss and I definitely think they all miss the point but that’s a whole other post).

—Caleb/Kanan bonding w/ Younglings like Ahsoka did w/ Gungi and the others.

—Yoda making Shaak Ti in charge of the clones (and her being a mom to every single one of them). She would definitely be the one to bring Younglings/Padawans in to train with the cadets so they learn to work together.

—Plo Koon being a dad to Wolffe/Ahsoka/the 104th (I wouldn’t mind seeing Plo’s backstory either).

—Kit Fisto’s story (being discovered, training, meeting Monnk, meeting Nadar).

—Anything about Saesee Tiin, Eeth Koth, Adi Gallia, Stass Ali or Ki Adi Mundi

—I could also see Cal Kestis making his animated debut (outside of video games) in this show as well.

—Ahsoka getting her 2nd lime green saber/Ahsoka getting her white sabers/purifying kyber crystals.

If the show did stories about other characters besides Jedi:

—Tales of the Clones (obviously unwhitewashed—I can dream can’t I?)

—Grievous’s backstory. Seriously this would be amazing.

—Huang’s backstory. When was he created? Was he a droid belonging to a Jedi (like R2/3PO and Anakin) or was he made specifically by the Jedi to be the lightsaber constructor. Maybe have a scene w/ a Youngling/Padawan Yoda??

—Shmi Skywalker being happily married to Lars. Bonus points for being a mother figure to Owen and her feeling like she failed Anakin (Obiwan parallel). Idk just more Shmi Skywalker. TPM didn’t have enough Shmi content.

All of these ideas could potentially tie in Jedis so it could still fit ‘Tales of the Jedi’.

As for Visions Season 2, I have absolutely no idea what to expect (just like S1) but all the animation shown looked 🔥 so I’m definitely excited for this. I believe in S1 we saw Boba Fett make a cameo in one episode. I didn’t recognize any cameo appearances from what was shown but please let me know if I missed anything (I’m not good with Legends/Extended Universe characters). Again, like Skeleton Crew, I can’t talk much about Visions simply because I don’t know enough/not enough has been shown. But definitely excited for this.

Now for Bad Batch Season 3.

Those that follow/have seen my posts regarding Bad Batch know that I don’t particularly like the show. I never have. In short, THE WHITEWASHING, the writing, the animation (regarding Omega’s emotional intensity), and Cid are all subpar. You can definitely tell this is a Disney Star Wars show (like the 1st half of S1 of Rebels—Rebels was the first disney animated SW show).

I will say that there are particular ideas that I liked but I just don’t think they were executed well. Dooku’s warchest/Serrano, Cody, Gungi, Echo leaving, the Zillobeast, Mayday/Crosshair duo, family vs soldiers trope, and even one of CF99 making a sacrifice are all great ideas I just don’t think it was done justice.

Season 3 is the final season and I can’t express how happy I am. I know that we are just going to get more of the same. The clone model/Omega’s design will not change (fuck Jennifer Corbett, Brad Rau and Dave Felony honestly), Cid is technically still in the picture, and the story has changed from saving Crosshair to saving Omega. I think it’s important to note that Hunter has no reason to believe Omega and Crosshair are together. Omega isn’t like the group. That’s the whole point of S1 w/ the bounty hunters. So having Tech sacrifice himself FOR CROSSHAIR, then having Hunter at the end say they are going to rescue Omega instead just undermines Tech’s sacrifice. Also the way Cid looked somewhat remorseful when accepting payment from Hemlock in the finale got me nervous. PLEASE NO REDEMPTION ARC FOR CID!!! GET RID OF HER!

I think the only thing I’m looking forward to for S3 is the music and the scenery animation. I don’t think I’ll watch Wednesdays. I was in no hurry for S2 and the disappointment I have for both S1 and S2 has made me not want a S3 but at least it’s almost over and they can do a new show. I love the CW-style animation, just make POC look like POC!!! It isn’t hard. I’m still hoping for a more adult/Andor-style CW-animated show completely disconnected from the Skywalker Saga (IN THE KOTOR ERA PREFERABLY!!) That’s my dream.

So yeah, I guess that’s all my thoughts on Bad Batch S3.

Lastly I wanna talk about that new animated Young Jedi Adventures. It’s set in the High Republic Era and features new characters (along w/ Yoda) but it’s aimed for preschoolers. Honestly I’m actually kind of excited for this show. I’m wondering if we’ll see any familiar faces or not (and if we do, will they be changed from Legends?). I don’t know anything else except the names of the characters have been released. I’m assuming it’ll be a kind of basic toddler show about learning the basics like what to do when you feel sad, how to share, bullying maybe, idk basic little kid lessons you know? I’m assuming these lessons are the ‘core’ foundation of who a Jedi is supposed to be—selfless people who do good and builds the Younglings up and maybe will end with the main group becoming Padawans/getting assigned a Jedi Master. Idk that’s just my guess, I could be totally wrong.

So out of the whole Star Wars Celebration, I’m mostly excited for the live action stuff (I didn’t talk about it, but that mando movie sounds pretty cool), but I am looking forward to Tales of the Jedi S2 and SW Visions S2. I didn’t talk about this either, but I’m a bit on the fence about the new Rey Skywalker/sequel movie. Apparently it’s 15yrs from Episode 9 Rise of Skywalker and Rey is a Jedi Master building the New Jedi Order or something like that. I LIKE Daisy Ridley. I DO NOT like Rey Skywalker (like many fans). I agree with pretty much all of Rey criticisms (being instantly good at Jedi stuff, overpowered, Kylo Ren x Rey pairing, etc).

Let's do Anakin first, in descending order:

5. Season 7 Episode 9 of The Clone Wars: Rescuing Obi-Wan

That whole part where he's kneeling on the tank talking down to Obi-Wan while carnage is happening all around him? He's simultaneously the glorious chosen one and also such a brat I love him.

I also just have such a soft spot for animated Anakin (and Matt Latner voicing him), even the jankier versions from the earlier seasons (shut up, his nose is fucking adorable) but this glow-up is everything I could have wanted for him and it really drives home how powerful Anakin already is and, honestly, makes the transformation into Darth Vader all the more terrifying and heartbreaking.

4. Revenge of the Sith: Rematch with Dooku

BAD! ASS! BITCH!

The cool collected expression when he catches Dooku's sabre after cutting off his hands like it's nothing? Yes, work it! He's so blasé about it (right before Palpatine interjects and starts being a creep about killing Dooku like the Skeevy Sheev he is) and it's such a glow up from the disastrous first duel. Anakin got his revenge and then some. You take my arm? I take your hands and your head.

3. Revenge of the Sith: Post Nightmare

The open robe, the low-slung pants, the exposed mechanical arm, the brooding... Hayden Christensen's face and low brow were designed perfectly for two things: being a pretty sad boy and the Kubrick stare. It's kinda sad how dark this scene is without editing but the way the city glimmers and catches on Anakin's brass curls? 😩 Perfection!

2. Revenge of the Sith: Don't even know what to call it I just want to look at him

Love looks so good on him, the way it absolutely consumes him to his core. It's both his most beloved and cursed trait and he wears it like a crown in this scene. It's both dark and warm at the same time, the way he stares at Padmé like she is his whole universe and she carries his future with her.

I'd say get you an SO who does the same but I don't think anyone wants to be put on a pedestal like that. And we all know how it goes down. But his loyalty and love do shine bright here in his gaze as well as his obsession and it makes him very handsome.

1. Revenge of the Sith: Unhinged Anakin

Anakin at his most glorious. As if it could be any other bastard but this one. He's at his hottest when he's high on the dark side and off his rabid ass mind, dreaming of ruling the galaxy with the love of his life. This basically includes the entirety of his conversation with padme and the "I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire" villain speech. He's perfect, he's evil, he's Darth Vader at his most glorious before Obi-Wan cuts him down to size 😭

Now for the handsome devil himself, Obi-Wan:

5. Season 7 Episode 9 of The Clone Wars: Confronting Bo-Katan and Ahsoka

He. Is. So. Soft. Here.

Soft but stern and so wholly good. He's a Jedi, and you can see it in every line of his body, in his compassion, in how heavy the weight of the decisions of war rest on his shoulders. The grey in his hair, the crows feet... they so lovingly animated him and I love him so so so much in this scene because it shows just how much he loves but is bound by duty to the greater good.

4. Revenge of the Sith: Utapau

Get yourself a man who can be a ✨Disney Princess ✨

The hood! Boga! A desperate last mission to end the war!

I love him with his hood up, being a sneaky mysterious Jedi. He's basically here to kick ass and be hot. Grievous doesn't know what's coming.

There's something about how good he is with animals that speaks to the quiet gentleness that's deep in Obi-Wan's soul. He may have little patience, and be a sass master, and as snippy as Ahsoka on her worst days but at his core he's a Jedi.

3. Attack of the Clones: Battle of Geonosis

YES, BITCH, WORK IT!

The badass snarly stab scene from Attack of the Clones lives in my head rent-free, 24/7, 365 days a year.

He's peak badass Obi-Wan here, tapping into that energy and viciousness which makes him a cunning warrior and general the Separatists learn to fear. This is the Sith Slayer in action and I love it.

The sex appeal is strong and it comes from the danger factor 💯💯💯

2. Attack of the Clones: Lost A Planet

This may actually be Obi-Wan's prettiest scene. Period. The screencap doesn't do it justice, go find one of the many pretty gifs of this scene to appreciate it's full majesty.

I don't even like mullets! How has he done this to me?

The planets floating around him like sparkles and stars just highlight how gorgeous Ewan McGregor is. How dare they film this scene like this, like he belongs in the cosmos and is home amongst planets and nebula like its second nature?

Anakin may be the son of the Force, but Obi-Wan is the Force's blorbo (that it loves to torment).

1. ROTS: Post Invisible Hand Crash

"This is how gays flirt." - my girlfriend

She's right. The cocked hip, the hand on it, the lean and the devilish smirk? He's never been hotter. What a ho!

He's bantering with Anakin, they just had a major victory they somehow bumbled into like a pair of disasters that they are and the war looks like it might be turning in their favour! He's just managed to dodge dealing with politicians by making Anakin do it. He's cheeky and sassy and having a good time. I love that for him.

Everything about this is so gorgeous and glorious. He's happy, do you know how rare that is in star wars? This man was made to suffer and his joy and love just shine all the brighter for it.

Since then, you had made a considerably stronger effort to get over your intimidation of Anakin. It was hard to accept that the man could turn you into such a sensitive little girl so easily. Your childhood shyness came back full-force around him. You could flirt and tease and play with any guy, but the minute he so much as looked in your direction, you froze. Clammed up. Lost all thoughts that might have been formed in your head, and stood there like a cadaver. Brain dead.

You hated the reasoning for it even more. You were demoted to a shell of a human being around him because he was pretty? How pathetic of you.

That wasn’t the only reason. Yes, you had always thought he was beautiful in ways you’d never seen before and know you will never see in anyone else. But that first night walking home with him cemented your feelings even more-- he was charming, and funny, and sweet, and ambitious-- and so so intelligent.

He had walked with his hands clasped behind his back like a prince, gloved arm in his flesh hand, guiding you leisurely through the streets as he waited for your shorter legs to keep up. He had smiled at your attempts at conversation, and inquired about your training as a field nurse at the Temple medbay. As if he really cared. He even pretended not to notice the goo-goo eyes you had shot him for a fleeting second, when you finally mustered the courage to look him in the face as you bid goodnight.

He was so handsome. Such a gentleman. So sweet and caring and brave. And strong and determined and on and on and on. He was everything. And that’s why your existence crumbled around him, because you felt like anything you did might annoy him, gross him out, make him detest you. Your self-esteem was never perfect, but around him it tanked. The thought of him dreading your presence scared you into motion, fleeing before he could realize how ugly, or annoying, or terrible you might be.

You knew it confused Ahsoka. She’d seen you play guys until their jaws were on the floor, whining and drooling after you like dogs. But as soon as her Master’s voice came over her com? You were a shaking, whimpering mess.

Her little plan had worked though. Soon, you were risking a quiet, “Hello, General Skywalker,” as she urged you to greet him over the com. You had twisted your hands together so hard the joints in your fingers popped, forehead breaking out with a slight sweat. But you had addressed him directly, even if it was over com. Baby steps, Ahsoka commended you.

And then, you had agreed to walk her to the starfighter hangars one afternoon-- a place he was notorious for hanging out, and one you had adamantly refused even stepping in the direction of. When you got there, he was, of course, under his yellow Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor, tweaking something with a wrench in one hand and a blowtorch in the other.

“Say hello,” Ahsoka had grit through her teeth, jabbing you in the ribs with her elbow. You winced and rubbed the spot, freezing in place as Anakin rolled out from under the starfighter and lifted his goggles onto his forehead. It pushed his bangs up, the curls sticking up cutely, making your heart skip a beat.

“Thanks for walking me, Y/n,” the Togruta padawan stressed your name pointedly.

“Uh… you’re welcome, Ahsoka.” You flinched as she raised her eyebrows, shifting your gaze to the man beside her. “Hi, Anakin.”

“Hey, Y/n,” his answering smile was blinding. Your veins filled with lava. Hearing your name formed from his sultry voice, dripping off his lips like honey, dancing across the room and tickling your ears with butterfly wings… it felt more like a blessing than a greeting.

It got easier with time. Baby steps was right. Soon, you weren’t turning on your heel as soon as you saw him walking down the same hallway, instead passing him quickly and returning his casual head-nod. If he caught sight of you in the mess hall, he’d wave and offer a small smile, a gesture which you returned. You had even managed to get that awful stutter under control, able to form words around him like you weren’t a newborn baby.

Ahsoka was proud.

And then. And then. And then.

He had snuck up behind you one day as you were cleaning up your station in the medbay. You had been switching gauze pads, removing stitches, and setting bones from clones and Jedi all day until the last patient came in, a clone bleeding from a slashed artery in his thigh where a bounty hunter had stuck him with a knife. He was lucky he got to you in time, or he surely would have bled to death. You managed to staunch the spurting flow of blood enough for him to be prepped and brought in for surgery, and then your shift was over. You were scrubbing the tiles clean of the results, scrubs absolutely drenched in blood, when Anakin knocked on the doorframe.

“Hard day?” he’d asked, eyes sweeping over the gory mess of the usually stark-white room.

“Quite typical, actually,” you grimaced, mind still reeling from the adrenaline. You guessed that’s why you had the confidence to actually speak to Anakin right now, as well as look at him without falling to your knees. Well-- you were already on your knees, so all you had to battle with was the flurry of butterfly wings in the pit of your stomach.

“Did he live?” Anakin walked a couple steps into the room, arms crossed, avoiding patches of dried blood on the tile.

“He’s in surgery, but he’ll pull through. Amazing, considering how much blood he lost.”

“I can see.”

You scrubbed away at the tile for a moment, strangely unbothered that he was seeing you covered in bodily fluids. You were most comfortable when you were in your element, and well, here you were-- quite literally in your element.

“Can… I help you with anything?” your heart lurched as you questioned him for the first time. Demanded his attention for the first time. Braced yourself for those heavy eyes to land on you and squeeze the breath from your lungs.

But if he was hurt… well… it was your job to fix it. Stupidly-strong crush or not.

“You can, actually.” He stood over you, looking down with a small tilt to the corner of his mouth. A flush rose to your cheeks as your eyes sifted over his body, looking for any wounds that might be visible.

“Nothing like that,” he shook his head, and then knelt beside you as he realized you weren’t going to stand. He reached into the soapy bucket beside you and grabbed a sponge, helping you scrub the floor clean of blood. “I was wondering… Obi-Wan and a few others from the Council have tickets to go to the Opera tomorrow eveing. They want me to go with them, but…”

You chanced a look at him, and he was wincing. “Well, let’s just say the Opera’s not a very entertaining place to be on a Friday night.”

You laughed lightly, nodding in agreement. The Opera was such a prized part of being on Coruscant, where all the wealthy and important people go to watch a swirling ball of light for hours. You never understood the novelty of it, but you found that everyone was afraid to call it out on its blatant dryness.

“So…?” you mused, dipping your sponge back in the bucket to get more water.

“So, I was thinking you could put me in for a checkup at that time just so that I’d have an excuse to bail.”

“You want me to give you a checkup?”

“Not actually,” he squeezed pink, soapy water into the bucket. “Just schedule one, so I can take the card and show it to them and then not have to go to the Opera. And to pay you back, I’ll take you to Dex’s for that breakfast-dinner you, Sabè, and Ahsoka do every week. Since you’ll be missing it to help me, and all.”

Your head rushed with blood, swimming as you took in his words. He wanted to take you to dinner?

No, he wanted you to help him. But… he didn’t have to pay you back. He wanted to do that. He was also waiting for your answer, so you got your wits together and accepted, eyes locked onto your scrubbing sponge as you replied,

“I think I can do that. As long as you show up here at exactly 8pm, cause that’s when my shift ends and there’s a 5 minute break as night shift takes over. I’ll let you in, and then we can sneak out the back.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Anakin flashed a dazzling smile at you, and for the first time, you were able to meet his shining eyes straight on and smile back.

About the supposed “dig at Rey” in the Mandalorian finale.

So a lot of people have taken to YouTube and social media, saying that Luke’s line about “talent without training (being) nothing” is a dig at Rey “bEcAuSe ShE’s A mArY sUe who’s good at everything and never trained!!”

No.

Quick recap: The Mandalorian is created by Jon Favreau, and he develops it with Dave Filoni (who created The Clone Wars with George Lucas, invented Ahsoka Tano, and created Star Wars: Rebels), among others.

As far as Dave is concerned, Rey is no different than Ahsoka, she’s not “OP”, she’s not a “Mary Sue”. He’s all for strong, independent, female characters.

He talked about this at the National Center for Women & Information Technology, you can find his full speech here. If you want to see the extracts specifically about Rey and female character in Star Wars, you can find it here (though I’d advise just ignoring the intentionally-triggering title and seeing the video for what it is).

All the backlash he saw about Rey? He saw it for Ahsoka too.

“Oh, she’s fighting Grievous and she’s only, like 13?! That’s so OP!”

“She feels like a Mary Sue written for a prequel based fan fiction.”

“Oh, she disobeyed an order from Yularen on Ryloth?! She’s so snippy!”

“Ugh, I hate her and her stupid voice!”

“She’s always pointing out stuff other characters have missed, like she’s so perfect! She's a Mary Sue with an annoying voice and personality.”

And honestly? I remember that period. People hated Ashley Eckstein and Ahsoka, just like they hated Hayden Christensen, and most Prequel-related content.

So no, that line is not a dig at Rey. If you expect that to ever come from Dave, big chance you’ll be disappointed. He is all for Rey, as a character (as am I, tbh). There may be issues with how she’s written, but none of it is related to her being too strong, or her being good at everything. Guess what? Captain America and Goku are good at everything too.

What The Mandalorian tackles, with that line, is a debate with bigger implications than just Grogu.

We get two sides of the same debate, from both Ahsoka, and Luke.

“I cannot train him. His attachment to you makes him vulnerable to his fears. His anger. I’ve seen what such feelings can do to a fully trained Jedi Knight. To the best of us. I will not start this child down that path. Better to let his abilities fade.”

“He is strong with the Force, but talent without training is nothing. I will give my life to protect the Child… but he will not be safe until he masters his abilities.“

The subject they really subliminally tackle is:

Should Anakin Skywalker have been trained to be a Jedi?

On the one hand:

Anakin has the potential of being the most powerful Force-user in galactic history, as the Jedi know it. It’s just a matter of time before he accidentally Force chokes someone in a fit of anger, or when submitted to extreme stress. He needs to be trained to hone his skills so he’s not a danger to himself and others.

Jedi Training would also help him get over the trauma of growing up as a slave on Tatooine, as it is aimed at keeping your emotions under control, whereas Anakin isn’t even acknowledging their existence (he pretends he’s not afraid in front of the Jedi Council, and seems to be the only person in the room to think that he should hide his fears). His hidden fears, his anger… Jedi Training would teach him to confront them.

Also, there’s a big chance the Sith are back! If they let this kid just go out into the wild, who knows, maybe the Sith Lords pick him up and make him one of their own. Better to keep the boy close.

Anakin is a good boy, raised by a loving mother, with a kind heart. If anything, he’s got the drive to do good as strong as that of any Jedi’s. Him being down-to-earth more than your average Jedi can potentially make him the best out of all of them. He could bridge the distance between the Jedi and the Senate, he could lead the Jedi into a new age. If anyone could be the next, better and improved Yoda, it’s Anakin Skywalker.

On the other hand:

Jedi training is for Jedi only. AKA, it’s perfect if you’re raised in the temple at a very young age to be a diplomat/wizard who upholds the values of the Republic, in control of your emotions and in Balance with the Force. But if you’re not? Then the strict rules of the Jedi Order will basically seem like an insurmountable (bordering on unreasonable) obstacle.

Any normal person will see these rules as attempting to turn you into a sociopath. Because if you’re a normal person, they might. For all intents and purposes, Anakin is a super-powerful normal person. If they take Anakin in, 10 years old, with the attachments he’s formed (his mother), the emotions he represses, the trauma from his upbringing - all of which, in a normal person, are totally fine and common - and try to force him in a mold he just won’t fit in, that’s just a recipe for disaster.

Of all people, Qui-Gon Jinn - Mister “I’m always right because I follow the Will of the Force and you don’t” - who is not the most forthcoming of people, as opposed to Obi-Wan, is insisting that he should train the boy. You give a chaotic Master a chaotic Padawan? That’s adding extra ingredients to the recipe for disaster.

The BEST thing to do would be Qui-Gon leaving the Order with Anakin, and raising Anakin as his surrogate son, teaching him his values, rather than training him as a Padawan and teaching him the values of the Jedi (which he’s too old for and which essentially make the Jedi the Senate’s lapdogs). But Qui-Gon’s insisting that he train him as a Jedi.

Anakin’s mind is too fragile as it is. If they add the stress of being a Jedi to that too, there’s a big chance he won’t be able to take it, and bring about the destruction of everything they are, stand for and care about.

And, to be honest? Both points are fair.

Because Anakin was both…

… the best of them…

… and their destructor.

But then, should Grogu be trained?

In my (and Luke’s) opinion? Yes.

Ahsoka’s logic makes sense… but it only applies to how things were before, back when the Jedi served the Republic as Force-sensitive diplomats/ambassadors, making decisions that impacted whole planets and their billions of inhabitants, keeping the peace through mediation, and occasionally investigating a crime.

But in Grogu’s case… things are a bit different.

The Republic is gone.

The Jedi’s mission of upholding its values seems to be gone with it.

So literally any surviving Jedi, has a new mission: just help people.

Be it Ezra & Kanan helping the Rebellion during the Dark Times.

Or Cal Kestis, saving the Force-sensitive children.

Or Ahsoka, helping the village of Calodan, after the fall of the Empire.

Or Luke, literally being a space-vagabond/Jedi archeologist for 10 years and helping out wherever and whoever he can.

The Jedi no longer have to deal with planet-sized problems, or mediations, or investigations, because the New Republic hasn’t included them in its government, seeing as they have their rangers, now.

So now, the pressure of “upholding the Republic’s values” and “going on missions which impact billions of lives” is gone.

Now, the Jedi operate at a smaller scale and just help people out. As they did, before they became Republic officials.

Sure, they still keep their emotions in control, but that’s simply for the sake of living a healthy life, rather than for the sake of objectiveness and diplomacy.

In these circumstances? It’s totally fine for Grogu to be trained, as he should be.

The line was about the fact that training Grogu to hone his skills is fine, and should be done, before he becomes a danger to everyone around him.

RANDOM ***SPOILER*** THOUGHTS ON THE MANDALORIAN S02E05

there were so many things i loved about this episode..

the not-so-subtle Japanese references? The whole garden, the clothes, Ahsoka’s clothes (especially from the concept art), the entire duel, some of the shots were so reminiscent of Samurai duels from old movies...

Ahsoka as a whole?! given that we’re talking live action, aka makeup and costumes, I believe they did the best they could with Ahsoka’s appearance. Yes, the lekku/montrals were a bit short compared to her adult appearance in Rebels, BUT consider that a real human actually had to wear that headpiece and move about, do stunts, etc. they had to cut some corners, and make it more user-friendly so to speak, so i think that’s completely forgivable. what i would have improved is Ahsoka’s stance, and the way she holds her sabers. tho that could have changed over the years since we last saw her, even Obi-Wan’s stance changed a bit over the years. so it’s fine. i just loved seeing her. and her new outfit was FIRE!!! it could possibly be my new fav Ahsoka outfit. and there are some tough ones to beat!

Morai appearing for a brief second?! or at least i think it was her, i would like to believe it was her. it was an owl-looking creature just over Ahsoka, so it has to be Morai, right?!

the not-so-subtle nods to Clone Wars and Rebels?! the mention of Thrawn was a straight up throw-back. the mention of other Jedi could mean Ezra, or anyone else, maybe Cal? Luke? someone else we don’t yet know is out there? the mention of “the best of the Jedi falling to the dark side”? Aka Anakin?! the mention of Yoda by name?! the main guard in the village wearing a Clone Wars era armor EXACTLY like Anakin’s general armor?!! I mean COME ON!!! that was pure perfection. It looked incredible in live action, and i would give everything to see Hayden Christensen in that armor!!

the music?! it just gets better every fkin time!!! Ludwig Göransson is quickly becoming my new fav composer!

baby yoda finally has a name?! aka Grogu?! OMG i love it. and we finally know that he is actually a he, and some more background info about him. yay. BUT who rescued him?! who trained him?! how come Ahsoka never saw him before?! i have so many questions, but i am so happy to have them.

there’s so much more that i can’t even remember right now because i am still an emotional mess.

i’ll probably add to this later on when the thoughts come to me..

i just loved this episode so much!!

i can’t wait to see what else they have for us!!

Edit 2: people are pointing out in their posts that if Ahsoka is looking for Thrawn, that could mean she’s also STILL looking for Ezra?! meaning she and Sabine never found them after the ending scene of Rebels?! could Thrawn have Ezra?! I just figured she and Sabine found Ezra, then went their separate ways, but she’s looking for Thrawn to take him down for good.. i didn’t even think of her never having found Ezra since Rebels... i just... this is too much.. i want to see Thrawn, but i also want Ezra to be safe... uughh.

Some possible scenes/ideas that could happen now that it’s officially confirmed that Hayden is coming back as Darth Vader (and I just remembered that he’s only played suited!Vader for one/two scenes so excuse me while I go cry):

The ghost of Anakin coming to haunt Obi-Wan on Tatooine: a personal favourite of mine. As far as I know, Obi-Wan found out that Vader survived a few months/years after Mustafar, so he never met Vader in the suit until A New Hope. Meaning that Ghost!Anakin could be either a flashback version of his younger self, as in, that’s how he would be if he [Anakin] lived, or most likely a suited Darth Vader hallucination. Maybe a distorted voice switching from Vader’s to Anakin’s like it did in Rebels during his fight with Ahsoka, and “blaming” Obi-Wan for everything that happened? Either way they’re going to talk to each other or at least acknowledge each other’s presence, either as an Anakin hallucination or a Force manifested Darth Vader presence. But seeing them together in one shot, in live action after so so many years, would be enough to send me to uncontrollable tears. Rating: 10000/10 I would definitely not be okay after watching this and it would be the only thing I would talk about for the rest of the decade. Very Angst/Hurt and little Comfort because we all know how their story ends.

What’s Darth Vader been up to? It’s been ten years since the Empire became a thing, and while we know what he’s been doing through comics and other media— we don’t really know what he’s been doing when it comes to... well, Obi-Wan. The show is about him, after all. We know Vader’s obsessed with finding Obi-Wan because hello, it’s Anakin we’re talking about, but we don’t really know what he does in his free time. With this being said, if we get any shot of Vader’s daily routine I won’t be able to handle it. Show him walking around an imperial ship, staring into the stars, being moody and add a sparkle of ✨drama✨ because turns out that I missed seeing this sad dramatic man on screen more than I realised. Rating: 66/10 definitely would cry again.

Maybe yes, maybe no, but 10 year old Luke Skywalker. It hasn’t been confirmed but the series is going to be set ten years after Revenge of The Sith; so Luke and Leia would be about ten. I don’t think I should elaborate on this one, but Obi-Wan was never too far behind Luke, so maybe a scene or two with a smiley blond kid on Tatooine could appear. Obi-Wan quietly watching him play in the sand, always from a distance, and making sure that Luke was safe. Rating: 100/10 of things I could definitely not handle.

Any scene that shows Vader’s scarred face and head would be top tier. Bonus points for yellow Sith eyes. They wouldn’t bring Hayden back and not show that he’s under the Vader mask, so this is most likely going to happen. This is most likely going to happen. Oh my god this is actually happening... Rating: 100 AHHHs/10.

These are just some ideas out the top of my head but regardless of what they do I am happy and glad they brought Hayden back. I loved him as Anakin and I hope his experience now will be better than it was fifteen years ago. He’s the perfect age to play Vader, as he always wanted to, and I just know that I’m so starved for prequels content that some character could just say “Lord Vader is in the planet” and I would be like “hell yeah he actually is!!!”... I’m very excited and so used to talking about Hayden returning in conditionals and “somedays” that now that it’s actually happening I don’t know what to do with myself.

I downloaded a bunch of Legends books about a month ago. I started reading the The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader, but I haven’t finished it yet. Outside of that book, I haven’t quite a lot of SW books. I feel kinda ashamed to admit that lol

35. Opinions on the animated series?

Since this question isn’t specific on which animated series I have an opinion on, I’m gonna give my opinion on all of the animated series that have come out that I have watched.

Clone Wars (2003)

I LOVE IT!!! The original Clone Wars was one of my first if not my first introduction to Star Wars. I remember watching some episodes of it and being entertained by them. My brothers had the DVD and I remember it so vividly. The fact that it was animated by Genndy Tartakovsky, the same man who animated Samurai Jack (another fantastic series that I remember specifically because my older brother loved it) makes it even better. This series has a special place in my heart <3

The Clone Wars (2008)

Oh boy...it seems that any content relating to the Clone Wars period was my introduction to Star Wars. I watched the movie first when I was a little girls and didn’t see it again after nearly 10 years later. The movie would have worked out better as an episode arc imo cuz as a movie it was kinda lackluster lol. In the beginning, I didn’t pay that much attention to the series when it originally aired on Cartoon Network (before the Disney monopoly bought the Star Wars license). I thought it was one of those lame cartoon shows from Cartoon Network, but boy, was I proved very wrong. The series’s first two season are decent, but going from season 3 and onwards it got darker and better. The characters, storylines and development from the series is pretty neat. When I saw Ahsoka I wasn’t fond of her, but I grew to quickly love her and she’s one of my favorite characters. Now, the show of course is not perfect and I think the writers forgot about the prequels in many occasions, particularly when it come to the character of Anakin (¬_¬), but outside of the problems I may have with it now looking at it in retrospect, I still enjoy and love it very much.

Star Wars Rebels (2014)

I remeber seeing the teaser trailer for this show in 2014 and I wasn’t interested at all. I watched a few episodes and honestly, I wasn’t as intrigued as I would have liked to. The show has some remarkable aspects to it and a few memorable moments (Vader vs. Ahsoka, any moment with Vader, the finality), but I’m not interested in the show and frankly, the rounded/softer animation style is not my cup of tea at all.

Forces of Destiny (2017)

Eeeeh....the quality of the animation is so lackluster, but I do like a few moments from it. I still won’t forget that abomation that was FOD!Anakin the first time they showed my boy. Why can’t artists ever get my boy right??? I guess Hayden Christensen’s face is so beautiful it’s almost impossible to replicate it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Obi-Wan Kenobi Last August at D23 Expo, Lucasfilm announced the return of Ewan McGregor in the iconic role of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for a special event series on Disney+. Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. The series is directed by Deborah Chow, who helmed memorable episodes of The Mandalorian Season 1. Talk to me about Star Wars!! When did you get into it, favorite movies/tv shows, do you play the games, anything you wanna talk about! I love Star Wars, the prequels are my jam and it’s cool that you’re into it as well - 🎄✨SS✨🎄

I’m gonna go ahead and tag @ange-de-la-musique since the package with the reveal came before I had time to answer this :) I’m also putting this under a Read More because (to absolutely no one’s surprise) this got VERY LONG.

I first saw Star Wars (specifically, the original trilogy and The Phantom Menace) when I was about 7 or 8. The Empire Strikes Back has always been my favorite because I’m basic and because as a kid I was OBSESSED with the snow walkers in the first battle sequence. I also have a vivid memory of telling a classmate that I thought Jar Jar Binks was funny, so...there’s that :P

I rewatched the original trilogy a number of times as a kid, but I didn’t really pay that much attention or get into it until TFA was announced. Like a lot of others, I got caught up in the cultural zeitgeist, but I also got into a personal rabbit hole surrounding both the filmmaking and the narrative background of the original trilogy. It started me down a path that (with a number of other things) finally led to me getting more into classic film (particularly Lawrence of Arabia, and ohhhh boy if you’d been here earlier, you’d know just how into it I got! I own a truly comical number of books on T.E. Lawrence himself, but that’s veering too far from the original question. I also read Dune somewhere in there bc it’s the perfect bridge between LoA and SW, and also fun and iconic and all that.) I also became a huge fan of Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork, so you can imagine how pleased I was to see Rebels use his style to its fullest potential!

I also read a number of now-Legends books between 2015 and 2017, mostly Timothy Zahn’s. I thoroughly enjoyed his Thrawn trilogy and Hand of Thrawn duology (Mara Jade is everything I never knew I needed and I found I loved her relationship with Luke. Also the audiobooks are DAMN GOOD). Other Legends books I enjoyed were Zahn’s Outbound Flight and Choices of One and John Jackson Miller’s Kenobi. (I read a TON of fic in here too, including the Son of Suns trilogy, which is brutal but brilliant.) I also read some New EU books, including Ahsoka, Lost Stars, Bloodline, Thrawn (I never did read the rest of the new series), Catalyst, Guardians of the Whills, the beginning of the new Star Wars comic, some of the Darth Vader comic, the first issue of the Kanan comic, and more, but my favorite was BY FAR the Rebels prequel (and first New EU book) A New Dawn (John Jackson Miller and the incredible SW audiobook team strike again!). I remember being so utterly blown away by how atmospheric it was...and by how much pre-Rebels Kanan is my fictional type, HOO BOY. It was so impressive to me that something inherently non-visual nevertheless managed to capture Ralph McQuarrie’s style so well.

As you can probably gather from that, I LOVED the major animated series. While I definitely remember seeing trailers and other material for the 2007 Clone Wars movie and subsequent series, I never watched it until it came on Netflix years later. The Clone Wars, for all its inter-arc tonal issues, is now one of my favorite animated series of all time. When it’s good, it’s REAL GOOD, you feel? It, along with Stover’s RotS novelization, retroactively boosted my appreciation for the prequels and for Anakin specifically (ilu Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen I’m sorry I doubted you as a kid). There’s so much good material to dig into in the prequel era and I’m so glad that I and others have come around to it. Ahsoka and the clones live in my head rent-free. I also found Rebels fairly enjoyable, especially after season one. Like with TCW, the pacing/tonal consistency wasn’t always great, but a lot of good shines through in the end. I loved seeing TCW (and Legends!) characters in there, of course, but my favorite Rebels-specific characters were Kanan, Hera, and Kallus (also I got really emotionally invested in Kallus/Zeb haha WH O O P S).

I have never played a Star Wars game apart from my brother’s copy of Lego Star Wars for the Wii, but I hear there’s some good stuff out there!

I have...Many Thoughts about the sequel trilogy/Disney era, but this reply is already monstrously long and I think that’s gonna have to be a post for another time. My favorite films from the new era are The Last Jedi and Rogue One. I will say John Williams really went ham with the TFA soundtrack and it’s lowkey a Christmas album for me bc of how often I listened to it when it came out.

TROS review

I’m just gonna make a list of the good and bad things I found about TROS in an attempt to reconcile my feelings about it and let it all out. I have a short summary of my main thoughts first, but the good/bad will be under the cut!

Ultimately, this movie (and the sequel trilogy as a whole) suffers from the fact that Disney evidently didn’t have a clear-cut plan or vision of where they wanted to take the sequel trilogy. The hastily introduced and underdeveloped plot lines, the neglect of many of its wonderfully diverse characters, the painfully obvious disconnect between Rian and JJ’s visions, and the attempt to fall back on tried-and-true story beats make this movie feel confused about its own themes and messages. It’s a polished product though, with beautiful production and an interesting and well-acted cast of characters (albeit with unexplored potential), but upon further inspection it has none of the genuine heart of the original trilogy, nor the daring complexity and ambiguity of the prequel trilogy. TROS carries the veneer of Star Wars, but through a combination of poor setup and lack of creative vision, TROS just seems to fall short in the ways that matter.

The Good

- Force-sensitive Finn!!!! Finn in general!! I’ve been hoping for force-sensitive Finn since TFA, and I’m glad it was confirmed, even though I think it should’ve been explored more and before this (which relates to my issues with TLJ, but I digress). John Boyega is such a charismatic actor, and it’s a pleasure to see him have a bit more material to work with. My only overall complaint is that Finn was not a lead character anymore after TFA—a waste of John’s talent (and his looks omg).

- Trio interactions, finally! I thought Daisy, John, and Oscar had great chemistry, and it was a lot of fun to finally see them work and banter together. Stand out performance goes to John, who really was the glue holding together this trio. Once again, it’s a shame this wasn’t have been started and developed earlier.

- Finnpoe. I’ll be honest that after TFA, I leaned more towards Finnrey and I still have a big soft spot for that ship, but Oscar and John were on fire together—the co-general line was hilarious and I would’ve 100% bought a romance between them.

- Stormtrooper defectors! Jannah! This was something else I always wished to see ever since Finn defected, and while in a perfect world I would’ve wanted to see an onscreen stormtrooper rebellion led by Finn in this series, I’m at least glad we got confirmation of this. Also, it seemed implied that the defectors were force-sensitive too?

- Ian McDiarmid. I love the way he chews up the scene as Palpatine in all his cheesy villain glory.

- Adam Driver’s acting. He’s a fantastic actor, and he’s done a great job at portraying Kylo Ren in the sequels. He almost made me buy the redemption. Almost.

- Voices of Jedi Past!!!!!! I almost made an inhuman noise when I heard Anakin (welcome back Hayden!), and hearing Ahsoka and Kanan was super special to me as well. I've some mixed feelings about what it means for Ahsoka to be part of those voices, but either way it was great to hear their iconic voices in a live action movie. The visuals of that scene were cool too.

- Yellow lightsaber for Rey!!!! And cool hilt design!! The Jedi Sentinels had yellow sabers too—don’t know if it’s intentional, but either way yellow is one of my favorite lightsaber colors and I’m glad they went with an unusual color for her.

- Overall, I enjoyed myself. It was a fun movie, but I don’t know if it ranks very high on the rewatchability meter for me.

The Bad

- Reylo never made sense to me, and it still didn’t in this movie. Unnecessary romance, far from the most compelling dynamic, and Rey seemed pretty unbothered by his death. Meh.

- The Forced HeterosexualityTM for Poe was uh.... hm. Also, weird retcon of his background? Wasn’t Poe always involved with the Republic/Resistance?

- Bendemption was mind-bogglingly quick and convenient. All it took to redeem him was Leia whispering his name from light years away and dying?? And he does a total 180? Come on. This is where the failings in TLJ become apparent, because Bendemption should’ve always been centered around his actual family, and he should’ve had interactions with Leia in TLJ. He fell because of his conflict with his family, and therefore his redemption should’ve happened due to a resolution with his family. This would’ve also worked if Rey was also related to him, but alas.

And of course it wraps up in a nice little bow with him ~selflessly~ sacrificing himself. Been there, done that in a superior way with Vader. Would’ve been more interesting if he’d survived as a not quite good but not quite evil person, and been forced to live with his sins and spend the rest of his life atoning for them.

- It is truly the ultimate troll that the main surviving legacy of the Jedi rests upon Palpatine’s descendant, and not the descendants of the bloodline THAT ORIGINATED FROM SLAVES that Palpatine cheated and manipulated for 6 movies. I don’t actually know if this is a good or bad thing, but it sure makes me feel some kinda way.

- Force dyad stuff is Not It for me. Transferring physical objects, super fast life force transfer/regeneration, spontaneous skyping.... no thanks. I’m cool with force bonds, but the way it’s been done in previous movies and tcw—being able to sense the presence of ppl you’re connected with, sending vague/simple emotions and messages. Like what Leia did with Ben? Cool, I’m down with that. Having a stronger connection when one person is on a force-concentrated planet? Also cool. But I really draw the line at physically touching and transferring objects because that’s basically a lazy shortcut to bypass the significance of the World Between Worlds.

- Similarly to TFA, I had an issue with the fact that it didn’t feel like any of the drama was character-driven—rather, they go where the plot demands they go and react to it.

- Fake out sacrifices for Chewie and Threepio, especially for Threepio. Basically, movie attempts for some stakes, and then rapidly backtracks.

- Just so much random stuff crammed in for the sake of it, like they were trying to cover their asses or something. There’s the obvious asspull of Palpatine being the final villain was there was literally ZERO hint of that in any of the previous movies, the stormtrooper defectors that come from nowhere and are barely explored, a laboratory of snoke clones (???), Jannah and Lando’s weird, out of place conversation that only makes kinda sense if you knew beforehand that Jannah is his long-lost daughter (which most ppl wouldn’t??), the lgbt “rep” that’s honestly just embarrassing, etc, etc. I’ve mentioned this in other posts, but it really screams to me of a failed effort to please everyone but ultimately pleasing no one.

- The mass jumble of underexplored plot lines just made the movie feel oddly unsatisfying at the end, and thematically the end of TROS is basically the end of ROTJ, which begs the question—what was the goddamn point of the OT and PT and ST if we were going to end up in the same place all over again? This is starting to veer into my qualms about the ST in general, which is not what this post is for.

- Disappointed with the soundtrack. In the end, the only memorable themes were rehashes of either the OT or TFA.

The Legacy of Star Wars: An Open Letter to the Writers and Creators of A Galaxy Far, Far Away

I saw a great meme once that played off that quote, meant to depict an older fan describing to a newer fan how they had been invested in the story of Star Wars from childhood. I could relate. Though I am not old enough to have seen the original Star Wars movies in theater, they were a significant part of my childhood. I remember renting the original theatrical VHS from our local video store all the time when I was little. Then we bought the digitally remastered Special Edition VHS Box Set and I spent the next decade wearing them out! We would have popcorn and Star Wars marathons all the time. My friends and I would always pretend we were in the story. My swingset was the Millennium Falcon. I was that 11-year-old girl who would argue with my friends over who was hotter - Luke or Han. (The correct answer is Han, of course!) My mother would read the Expanded Universe novels to me in the afternoons and we would talk about the characters. All my spending money went to Jedi Apprentice books and 6 inch action figures. In short, I loved Star Wars.

I was 13 when The Phantom Menace hit theaters, and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to get to see new stories from my favorite fictional universe play out on the big screen. Though I struggled a bit with some of the acting, the story was absolutely amazing to me. Star Wars felt all the more real to me with the amazing graphics and intense action sequences - not to mention the layers of politics and the complexity of the story. I watched Revenge of the Sith several times in theaters, and though it broke my heart to see Anakin’s fall, I never considered it to be a sad ending overall, when taken as a whole with the original trilogy.

When the Clone Wars aired in 2008, I was ecstatic. Here was an Anakin I could actually get into (sorry, Hayden). I loved him. I adored Ahsoka. I wanted to marry Rex. The character development and the plot deepened my attachment to that era, and made me question everything I had previously taken for granted as good and bad. The whole system was flawed - the Republic and the Jedi. It wasn’t just a matter of mistakes being made and the wool being pulled over their eyes, there was deep rooted corruption in the side that I once felt was “good”. The light side and the dark side were not as black and white as I thought. I found myself strongly disliking some of the “good guys” and deeply sympathizing with some downright detestable people (I don’t know how you got me to care for Maul, Filoni - but well done). While the series had not yet ended, we knew where it was going. But still, we had already lived through the pain of Order 66, and we knew that the story would eventually culminate in a victory at the end of Return of the Jedi.

I couldn’t believe our luck when the first installment of the sequel trilogy hit the theaters in 2015. It had some of the feelings of a reboot, but I was beyond thrilled to have a series of Star Wars movies that I could now share with my children, as my parents had shared them with me. Though it was hard to say goodbye to the first love of my life, Han Solo - I just knew that Ben would be redeemed and Han’s sacrifice would be worth it...

2016 brought us Rogue One. We knew how that one was going to end too, but we still ate it up. I fell in love with a whole new set of characters, only to see each and every one of them die in the end. Talk about tragedy. But Leia’s line about hope reminded us that five minutes later, a whiny little farm boy was about to have his whole life upended in the best sort of way...so it was okay. Sort of.

Four years of Rebels ended in 2018, and it was so, so lovely - but it hurt so, so much. My perfect, beautiful space family had been torn apart with Kanan’s death. Ezra was missing. Rex was a 29-year-old man who should have been in his prime, but was instead struggling with the wear and tear of a 60-year-old body. Ahsoka was separated from him - AGAIN - and then she left with Sabine to look for Ezra. The ending still held the promise of the fight to come with the Empire, but the majority of our characters were left in a place of grief and brokenness.

2019 brought an end to the sequel trilogy. Once again, we had characters who pulled at our heartstrings, and an interesting struggle between “light” and “dark” that reminded me of the complexities introduced in The Clone Wars. It became more apparent than ever that balance in the Force did not mean the light triumphing over the dark, but instead a harmony between the two. At least, that’s what I thought. Until I watched every person I loved from the original trilogy die, Palpatine come back (and die) again, and the same exact ending of Return of the Jedi played out before me - except not as happy. Why? Because Anakin’s legacy had been reduced to ashes - his rise, fall, redemption, and sacrifice rendered null and void. The last Skywalker was redeemed and promptly killed, just like his grandfather. But because Rey Palpatine decided that she identified as Rey Skywalker, it was supposed to be okay. She then went to go hang out (or live?) alone on Tatooine because that’s where it all started. I was dumbfounded. This was the satisfying, hopeful, ending we were promised? How?

Believe it or not, I’m not here to trash the sequels - I enjoyed them very much - right up until the last 20 minutes. But in that space of time, the entire legacy of the Skywalker family went up in smoke, and the legacy of Star Wars along with it. Since Return of the Jedi, there have been no happy endings to a Star Wars movie trilogy or TV show. And with the ending of The Rise of Skywalker, that one happy ending we did have was ripped from us as well. Star Wars is now a never ending series of tragic endings. The lessons we are left with: Don’t fall in love in Star Wars, it will end badly. Your actions ultimately result in failure. As soon as you turn good, you die. There is no balance in the Force, just a pendulum swinging back and forth for all time.

Then The Clone Wars finally got her last season. I didn’t think Order 66 could have hurt worse, but Filoni set out to prove us all wrong...and succeeded. I’m still not over it. And once more, the bitterness I felt over the ending to the sequels (which had begun to subside) flared up all over again. What was it all for? All that pain. All that sacrifice. No happy endings.

I still love Star Wars. Nothing can take that away from me. No amount of bad writing can change that. And there are still plenty of good writers and creators working on Star Wars content. But good writers spinning tales of tragedy and endless pain negates the power of good writing. The Star Wars of my childhood is not the Star Wars of today. We wore out those VHS tapes because we loved the stories and the people. But my kids are not going to wear out DVDs where everyone they love dies or ends up alone. They aren’t going to queue up those digital movies and series over and over - because who wants to subject themselves to that kind of torture?

Just about the only safe space for Star Wars fans right now is fanfiction archives where the people who love the characters are busy writing fix-it fics to squeeze some sort of satisfying ending out of the canon content. The Mandalorian is literally our last hope for a Star Wars story that has the potential to end well. I swear, if Din Djarin ends up dead or alone at the end of this series, I’m going to lose it. The overwhelming sentiment of the Star Wars fanbase - from original trilogy fanboys to Tumblr blogging Reylos, and everyone in between - is that of dissatisfaction with canon content (with the exception of The Mandalorian). So much so, that many fans are just saying “screw it” and churning out a myriad of fanfiction AUs because there is no way to salvage what has been written. Half of Tumblr is in therapy after The Rise of Skywalker ending and the last episode of Clone Wars - but they weren’t exactly stable to begin with. The other forums and social media platforms are not much better, though.

It’s not just about the quality of writing - because Filoni and co. have done exceptional work with The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian. It’s the tragedy, guys. We can’t take it anymore. Is this really what we want the Star Wars legacy to be? Sadness? Despair? It’s a story about war - people are going to die. I get that. Victory comes at a price, but the cost can’t be worse than the victory. I want to sit down with my kids and watch Star Wars over and over again. The Mandalorian has given us a taste of that - but I’m almost afraid of where it will go. We’ve been burned so many times, I’m beginning to know what Anakin felt like on Mustafar - writhing in agony and screaming “I hate you” to someone he once loved.

I remember happier days when Luke and Leia and Han were laughing and smiling with their friends while Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin looked on. I want that back. Filoni. Favreau. Creators. Writers. Producers. Directors. You are our only hope for canon content. Use The Mandalorian wisely. Use Din’s story to bless other characters. Here’s some ideas:

Let Din have a happy ending! Preferably with someone he loves and respects at his side (like Cara).

Let Cara become a Mandalorian - and put Paz Vizsla in charge of her training (we need to see them spar).

Let what’s left of the Tribe establish a new Mandalorian colony - and let Sabine Wren lead it. And give her that Darksaber back - she earned it.

Let Ezra come back from regions unknown with a deeper understanding of the Force, and have him train the child in the new colony.

Forget the Jedi and Sith, let’s start a medical training center/hospital run by Force users who can help heal people when modern medicine fails!

Ahsoka can use her talents for that too.

Find the rest of the child’s race and bring any of their Force sensitives onboard.

Let Boba Fett and Din have their epic showdown, but then use a sample of Boba’s unaltered DNA and some mystical Force healing to restore Rex’s body to what a 43-year-old should be (and then he can marry Ahsoka so we can have the Clone/Jedi couple we always wanted...thanks to you, Filoni).

Let the Mandalorians partner with the New Republic in the Outer Rim as law enforcement instead of bounty hunters, so they can get their reputation back.

They can train new recruits and pilots, just like Fenn Rau trained clones.

Let them keep their autonomy and traditions, while helping keep the New Republic honest.

Let them be a force for good in the galaxy, for once.

The Mandalorian could serve as the vessel to give a lot of characters with unresolved or tragic storylines some closure and better endings. If not The Mandalorian, then other new shows. My 6-year-old daughter wants nothing more than to be Ahsoka Tano. My 3-year-old son asks me to watch The Mandalorian every day. My 18-month-old daughter walks around in her brother’s Mandalorian helmet babbling “Way”. Please let me share the Star Wars legacy that I grew up loving with them. Let me show them the happy endings I enjoyed. Let me show them that even in the midst of conflict, not every life has to be ruined. Let me show them a Star Wars story with a satisfying ending. Hope. Redemption. Love. That’s what Star Wars means to me.
