Pathfinder (1987). A young Sámi man witnesses a band of vicious raiders slay his family and flees to a nearby village, where he learns he must become a Pathfinder.
Watching this for the Oscars Project (it was nommed for Best Foreign Language Film in '88!), I didn't realise until afterwards the film's significance in helping preserve the Sámi language and culture - wonderful! I love the capacity cinema has in sharing history, language and cultural dialogue, particular those which have been silenced by colonialism.
Also! This is great! A really thrilling adventure, albeit a straightforward one. There's a real warmth between many of the dynamics - a nice contrast to the icy surrounds - and it beautifully folds together folklore and realism to tell just a really good story. Highly recommend it! 8/10.

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #391: Welcome My Brother, Jeremy, as We Talk About Ofelas (Pathfinder, 1987)
This wk, @pixelgrotto & I are reviting #Ofelas (Pathfinder), a 1987 Norwegian film directed by #NilsGaup about a Sami boy fighting off invaders. Great historical adventure film and a respectful depiction (IMO) of an oft misunderstood native culture.

Unity pricing change.
Unity Technologies, maker of the game development engine Unity, announced today that they will be changing the pricing structure for the engine in the near future. Among the other changes involved, developers using the Unity engine will be charged for their use of the engine on a per-install basis, with uninstalls and reinstalls from the same user counting as multiple installs.
If I had the time I could spend an hour telling you why this is, economically, a ridiculous decision given the nature of game distribution. However, suffice to say this means that game demos, bundles, free copies, and games on subscription services are all dangerous to developers using Unity, as they could result in installations that cause them financial harm while potentially not bringing in enough (or any) money to compensate for that.
You can't really do anything about those as players, but another impact you'll want to consider is that DRM free games are also dangerous to developers; any game which can be passed around for free and installed on multiple systems could be a financial drain. This means there is the potential for games on GOG (which features no DRM) to be removed from the system, or patched. I am, as always, a large proponent of DRM-free games since circa 1987, so I feel this is relevant information to pass along here.
The list of Unity games on GOG is potentially large. A lack of interface-able data prevents me from putting together anything comprehensive, but I know it includes titles like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Heroes, Layers of Fear, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Children of Morta, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and other popular titles. If you have some favorite games on GOG and are concerned about any impacts, I recommend checking to see if they run under Unity and downloading an executable now as a DRM-free backup in case any complications occur in the future.

CHAPTER 22 Excerpt: A throat cleared as the door to the building finally shut.
She’s the same and completely different all at once. Nancy and Robin watch each other closely. She should have considered what she wore to pick Holly up from school. The brunette looked at the blonde, and the blonde looked back just as intense. Her hair still shagged, which was not a surprise. Robin liked to keep some consistency to her appearance. Tailored corduroy, a vest, and a jacket. Her makeup’s less heavy, but this was the woman she etched permanently into her mind the day she watched Robin pack away the last bit of the things she kept at Nancy’s previous residence.
“Hi,” said Nancy.
“Hi,” responded Robin.
PART I: “The goal … should not be to destroy Vecna … but to stop the evil plans carried out by his mortal servants.” – Vecna Reborn
It’s the winter break of 1988. Now a junior in college, Nancy has not returned to Hawkins since the spring break of 1987. Nancy and Robin decide to revisit the situationship started as friends with benefits before the summer of 1986.
INTERLUDE: Relationships are complicated, and not defining the obvious would twist anyone to knots. Good or bad life moves on. PART II: “Once upon a time lost to history lived a mortal man called Vecna … Vecna schemed, laying audacious plans designed to transform himself into a true god” – Die Vecna Die. It’s the late fall of 1999, and with one midday phone call Nancy’s back in Hawkins. A relationship starts again, had it ever stopped? Ask their friends, ask their families, they’ll all say no with a roll of their eyes. Because Nancy and Robin might twist and turn, but there was no end in sight, yet.
or What if Nancy and Robin were canon for season 5 and They also play Tabletop

#NISSAN PATHFINDER INTERIOR DRIVER#
#NISSAN PATHFINDER INTERIOR ANDROID#
Inside, Nissan opens up an airy cabin with tons of storage compartments and cloth or available leather upholstery. Rocker panels with available chrome inserts also broadcast the Pathfinder name. In back, horizontal LED taillights catch that line from the front, where it’s all tied together by “Pathfinder” stamped on the liftgate below the new Nissan badge. Five two-tone color options exaggerate the floating roof look. The distinct triangular window is gone, but Nissan cut a triangular shape in the pillar between the rear door and the back and blacked out the roof in Nissan’s contemporary design language of a “floating” roof. The Pathfinder rides on 18-inch or available 20-inch wheels. That visual light line runs down the body, over rounded wheel arches flexed with black cladding to the rear. The new model retains that high vertical face with short overhangs, and a slotted hood above Nissan’s U-shaped grille that flares out to standard LED headlights. The blend of classic and modern earns the Pathfinder a point each for the interior and exterior to a 7. That model looked like a small truck with a covered cab. The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retains the same general exterior proportions but reimagines some classic cues from the first Pathfinder that launched for 1987. Is the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder a good-looking car? Where is the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder made? All-wheel drive adds $1,900 to all trims. Sold in four trims, S, SV, SL, and Platinum, the base 2022 Nissan Pathfinder with front-wheel drive costs $34,560 including $1,150 destination fee. How much does the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder cost? Safety options range from a surround-view camera system to adaptive cruise control down to a stop. Nissan equips every 2022 Pathfinder with its front and rear automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-departure warnings, and automatic high beams. Additional Platinum features include a Bose 13-speaker sound system, navigation, heated second-row seats, panoramic sunroof, and power tailgate. On Platinum trims, a large 10.8-inch head-up display can project vehicle info out on the road ahead, and a 12.3-inch digital display lights up the instrument cluster.
#NISSAN PATHFINDER INTERIOR ANDROID#
Standard features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, keyless entry, satellite radio, and other modern helpers, or Pathfinder shoppers can opt up to an available 9.0-inch touchscreen and wireless CarPlay. In front- or all-wheel drive, the 2022 Pathfinder tops out at 23 mpg combined. When properly equipped, the Pathfinder can tow up to 6,000 pounds, which is in the higher end for the class.
#NISSAN PATHFINDER INTERIOR DRIVER#
The driver can shift through seven terrain modes to optimize the gearing for the situation. Two adults can fit in the third row, and four sets of golf clubs can fit in the 16.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row.Ī new 9-speed automatic transmission replaces the old CVT and sends power from the same 284-hp 3.5-liter V-6 to the front wheels or all four via available all-wheel drive. It’s easier to get in and out with second row seats that flip forward with the push of a button to access the third row, and child safety seats can remain intact. It also handles up to eight passengers or seven with second-row captain’s chairs. The cockpit is anchored by a large, truck-like center stack crowned by an 8.0-inch or available 9.0-inch touchscreen that rules over a band of horizontal vents and a climate control bar. Inside, Nissan optimized the space of the Pathfinder, which is slightly shorter than the outgoing model but far roomier. Nissan’s U-shaped grille flares out to thin daytime running lights like wispy eyebrows over the standard LED headlights. With its first new suit in nearly a decade, the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retains that high vertical face with short overhangs, and the three-slot grille bridges a flat hood with a broad face, similar to the original.
#NISSAN PATHFINDER INTERIOR DRIVERS#
The V-6 engine remains the same, but a new transmission, all-wheel-drive system, and electric steering rack allow drivers to better match the seven available drive modes with conditions on or off road. Redesigned for the first time since 2013, the fifth-generation Nissan Pathfinder sports a new look inside and out, and comes loaded with the latest convenience and safety technology. It earns a strong TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10. The redesigned Pathfinder doesn’t try to be a performance crossover or an electrified dynamo, but it is very good at what it is meant to do: hauling up to eight passengers and towing up to 6,000 pounds in comfort and with the latest technology.

The Finders Cult - CIA Connections?
On February 4, 1987, police officers in Tallahassee, Florida were alerted by a female caller about six filthy and unkempt children playing in a park. The caller further stated that the children appeared to be under the guardianship of two well-dressed men. The Tallahassee police learned that the two men were Douglas E. Ammerman and Michael Houlihan, both of Washington, D.C. They were arrested for child abuse. Several days later, a $100,000 bond was placed for both men. Originally, Ammerman and Houlihan (real name later discovered to be Michael James Holwell) claimed that they were transporting the kids to a school for gifted children in Mexico. However, this story did not adequately explain why the six children were found unwashed, covered in bug bites, and practically starving. Later the police contacted the mothers of some of the children, with most admitting that they had voluntarily given their children over to Ammerman, Holwell, and others.
On February 6, the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. conducted a search of a warehouse in Northeast Washington. Inside investigators found evidence of cult activity and “brainwashing.” More to the point, the warehouse, which according to eyewitnesses was frequented by well-dressed men despite being in a notoriously rough neighborhood, included wallet-sized photographs of prepubescent children naked and participating in occult blood rituals. The U.S. Customs Service also became involved as there was evidence of the group being involved in the production and distribution of child pornography.
The first reports in all the major U.S. newspapers at the time disclosed the fact that the Finders were headquartered in Culpeper, Virginia on a 90-acre farm. The reports also suggested that the group’s membership included approximately 40 people. Finally, prior to the case in Tallahassee, MPD officers reported that cult rituals were taking place near the 3900 block of W Street NW, and the evidence for this included eyewitness accounts and the discovery of several stones formed in the shape of a ceremonial circle.
Despite all of this reporting, on February 10, 1987, Police Chief Maurice T. Turner, Jr. of the MPD claimed that there was no evidence of ritual abuse or other occult activity in regards to the Finders organization. Similarly, police in Tallahassee told the media that the six children had not been kidnapped and had not been participants in any kind of ritualistic abuse. The speed with which the public narrative about the Finders changed raised more than a few eyebrows.
Prior to the quick shutdown of the case, news reports in February 1987 claimed that one of the goals of the Finders was to “wean” children away from their parents. Pettie, whose nicknames included “The Student,” “The Stroller,” “The Game Caller,” and “The Pathfinder,” forced his female followers to initiate sexual relationships. The children from these encounters would be given communally to group. Pettie, a veteran of the US Army and Air Force, would help raise these children to be tough and self-sufficient. These clues initially led police to believe that the Finders were a survivalist group.
One of the more unusual aspects of the Finders case is the repeat connections to China, especially Hong Kong (then a British colony). A search of the van found at the original scene in Tallahassee included a Chinese-English dictionary, while the computers found in Washington, D.C. included correspondence between members in China, Hong Kong, and the United States.
In a strange interview reported by the Associated Press on March 23, 1987, Robert Terrell told the media that “This is farewell from the Finders, we’re breaking up. You won’t hear from the Finders again until the Chinese are running Hong Kong”. This cryptic statement did not garner much attention back in 1987, but given the group’s strange connections with China (including basing their “philosophy” on Lao Tse), many Internet sleuths now think it likely that the Finders were buying and selling child pornography as well as children from shadowy concerns in Hong Kong.
It is worth mentioning that the computers uncovered in Washington, D.C. also showed communications between members in Europe, Japan, Africa, and South America. The fact that the group also seemed interested in terrorism, including terrorist tactics and how to create bombs, has never been fully explained.
One persistent investigator was Skip Clements, a resident of Stuart, Florida and the man who made a major trade deal with China in the 1990s to be the sole exporter of Florida oranges to the world’s largest nation. According to Clements, the Customs Service dropped their case against the Finders at the behest of the CIA. Clements has stated time and time again that the CIA was using the Finders as a front to train special agents.
Clements proved persistent, and in November 1993, the Department of Justice sent out a memo requesting that the Finders be re-investigated to see if they had any ties to U.S. intelligence. U.S. Representative Charlie Rose (D-N.C.) even met with Clements to discuss the case. Another politician, Representative Tom Lewis (R-F.L.), used the Finders case to draw attention to the fact that the Customs Service’s Child Pornography and Protection Unit had seen its arrests fall by a fourth between the late 1980s and early 1990s.
One of the original investigators in the case, Special Agent Ramon J. Martinez of the Customs Service, re-emerged in 1993 to suggest that his case had been deliberately suppressed by the FBI and the CIA. Martinez echoed Clements in saying that he believed that the U.S. intelligence community was involved with the Finders.
When the Finders case was reexamined in 1993, several former members of the cult came forward to talk about their horrifying experiences. Some claimed that the group used extortion and blackmail to stop members from leaving, while others claimed that the group regularly used arson to keep members in line or seek retribution. These accusations were backed up by evidence from local police reports all across the country. Others made the shocking allegation that members of the group posed as babysitters across the country in order to kidnap children.
Just when renewed attention was being focused on the Finders, the group seemed to disband for good. The same group that the FBI considered dangerous and guilty of “obtaining children for unspecified purposes” seemed to melt away by 1996.
