Dear Gus & Magnus,
I was supposed to be in New Orleans for a film shoot today, but Hurricane Ida kept that from happening -- significant portions of the city are still without power. The silver lining was that I got to make my Education Action Committee meeting. Now that Gus has entered into the Little Rock Public School System, I find that I'm even more invested in these meetings than I already was. This is a good group of people who are capable of making some good things happen that may directly affect you two.

Dear George || Bonus Chapter: Tit For Tat || Preview
Gwendolyn had two rules for herself. Keep her head down. Get good marks.
Nothing else quite mattered, as long as she could get herself where she needed to be for her future. Into a distinguished training program as a Healer, to stand at the top of her class in all regards so she could become the best Healer and Apothecary in the United Kingdom. It’d been her reason to join the Quidditch team-- players tended to stand out more than other applicants.
However, at these times it was hard to keep her head down.
“She’s a filthy Mudblood--”
Gwen directed a scowl towards Malfoy, “We get it Draco. You hate Potter and his friends. Ever tried talking about Quidditch for once? We might not lose next time.”
Every day she became more and more understanding of why her father had hidden the family away in the first war and made himself an asset to the order. Malfoy’s lot, the Death Eater lot, wasn’t one she wished to be associated with.
“You’re talking awful big game aren’t you Hughes? For a half blood.”
Rivers and Higgs next to her straightened their backs, Gwen was the only half blood on the Slytherin team but she was not without friends.
Higgs put her hand atop Gwen’s arm, “We would be winning more if it weren’t for your showboating Draco.”
“Enough.”
Blaise’s voice cut through the noise like a knife. Gwendolyn knew for a fact that he didn’t like her either-- Zabini rarely associated with anyone except for purebloods if he could help it. Then again, he hardly seemed to put up with any of Draco’s antics either.
“We’re preparing for a game, not trying to start a duel. So be quiet and pay attention.”
Gwen bit the inside of her cheek and stayed silent. Higgs patted her arm a few more times.
Keep your head down. Get good marks.
This would all be worth it. Just like her father said.
She just needed to keep her head down.

If you can’t tell, I definitely have a type. Aside from Higgs, I really enjoy characters that are just really mentally/emotionally compromised but still manage to do good. They’ve hit rock bottom but somehow managed to survive and be better (okay maybe Constantine isn’t that much better but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Hey guys here’s a story I wrote. Hope you like it.
Life has a funny way of working. And generally, Lily thought life was out to get her. And maybe it was out to get her, making her feel this way. Her pulse quickened, her mouth turned upwards involuntarily, her legs began to wobble. Lily tried to convince herself that she was sick, that no matter the signs, she must be allergic. Allergic to him. Jaron Higgs. Lily knew that life was random, but she hadn’t accounted for the fact that she may like Jaron. Jaron was the heartthrob of the grade, and Lily generally couldn’t tell why. Perhaps it was his ability to somehow still not shift, or his way of being utmost antisocial. Or maybe it was the way that his hair always fell perfectly and how his smile and laugh were incredibly contagious. Yep, life was out to get Lily Torres, for she had inexplicably fallen in love with the perfect guy, and the chances of him liking her back were less than the chances of gaining 2 million crayons to sell on the black market. - Lily disliked retaking tests. Hate was a strong word. Gosh she sounded like an old Geico commercial. Never mind, she hated retaking tests. Lily headed towards the Orchestra room to pick up her cello. Most likely everyone would be gone by now, and she could pick up her cello and just go to NAL practice. Not that she had many friends at NAL, but it was way more fun than simply going home. As Lily walked through the door to the Orchestra room, she heard muffled crying coming from the practice rooms. She walked in and saw Jaron standing by himself. Lily didn’t think Jaron had any problems, because he was the popular, hot guy. But Lily realized she of all people should know everyone had problems. “Hey, are you ok?” Lily asked. Jaron hurried and wiped his eyes before turning to her. “Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” Lily looked at him with disbelief in her eyes. “Uh, are you sure?” Jaron smiled the fakest smile at Lily, “Yeah, I’m sure.” “Kay,” Lily backed out of the room tentatively, grabbed her cello and headed over to NAL. Carson noticed the shocked look on Lily’s face when she slid into her seat next to him. “You look as if Parker grew 3 feet.” He said jokingly. “Well something almost as unbelievable happened.” Lily half whispered in his direction. “What?” Carson’s joking manner turned halfway into concern, but he didn’t completely drop the joking lilt in his voice. Lily took a deep breath. “Nothing. It’s nothing.” - School started as usual. It also progressed as usual. Lily was waiting until 6th period. Orchestra. She hadn’t been able to get Jaron out of her head all night, though she supposed she couldn’t on a normal day as well. She needed to approach this carefully so she wouldn’t scare him off. Lily took her place behind Jaron. As she opened her mouth to say something, the bell rung. Well that postponed her plans for a bit. Lily couldn’t wait for Orchestra to be over. It wasn’t a bad class, she just had better things to be doing. The bell rung for a third time that period, this time signaling freedom instead of constraint. Lily quickly put her cello away and ran to catch up to Jaron. “Hey, are you absolutely sure you are ok?” Lily asked him. “Because from what I saw yesterday, you weren’t.” Jaron looked at her with an expression resembling fear and relief. “If you really want to know...” “Yes I really do!” Lily almost screamed, externally and internally. “Can you meet me at the park tonight at 6:00?” Lily smirked at him. “Is this a date?” Jaron turned quickly towards her, his face heating up to a Strawberry red. Strawberry because strawberries are more aesthetically pleasing than tomatoes, and nothing Jaron did was bad. “Uh, what? NO! I mean, uh, just meet me at 6:00, ok?” At that Jaron turned to go to his next class, leaving Lily in a state of odd confusion and slight giddiness. - At promptly 6:00, Lily arrived at the park. She looked around for Jaron and finally saw him sitting on the playground. “Hey, what are you doing there?” Lily called to him. “Trying to remember what it felt like to be a carefree child.” Jaron said bluntly. Dang. Lily wasn’t expecting such a deep answer from him. “Do you want a sandwich?” Jaron asked, holding up two plastic baggies with sandwiches inside. Lily found it slightly endearing that he kinda tried. They walked over to a good patch of grass and sat down. Lily looked over at Jaron, and tried to guess what kind of problems he was dealing with. But she also realized that finding heart arches and pains in people isn’t as easy as reading a book. “So do you want to tell me why you were crying?” Lily asked him. Jaron looked over at her and seemed to debate with himself how much he was willing to reveal. After a slight pause he finally opened his mouth. “I have anxiety and depression, but I feel like I can’t let it show because I need to stay strong in front of everybody. Because I have a reputation to uphold.” Lily was dumbstruck. She had no idea that Jaron Higgs struggled the same way she did. “Yesterday, I finally allowed myself to let some of the emotions show, because I wasn’t expecting anyone to show up.” “Though I’m kind of glad you did.” Jaron stared into her eyes at that moment. Lily wished she could be his girlfriend. She wished that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. She also understood all of the sadness and pain he went through. She stared into his eyes and let the emotions radiate from him into her. She knew it hurt. She wished she could help him. He leaned in closer and Lily felt closer to him emotionally as well. And then he kissed her. And some of the pain that lingered in Lily disappeared.

Health officials in New Brunswick are reporting 48 new COVID-19 cases and 41 recoveries on Friday, as the total number of active cases in the province rises to 556.
“We are seeing stability in cases, which is positive, and we know that if we remove measures too quickly we could see a spike in hospitalizations, which is why circuit breaker measures have been extended and expanded in the province to help further reduce the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19,” said Premier Blaine Higgs. “These measures are necessary for us to be able to keep New Brunswickers safe.”
According to health officials, 27 of Friday's 48 new cases, or 56 per cent, are unvaccinated. Twelve cases, or 25 per cent, are partially vaccinated, and nine cases, or 19 per cent, are fully vaccinated.
The province says there are currently 28 people in hospital in New Brunswick due to COVID-19, with 17 in an intensive care unit. Of those currently in hospital, 17 are unvaccinated, three are partially vaccinated, and eight are fully vaccinated.
Of the 17 people in the ICU, two are fully vaccinated, 13 are unvaccinated, and two are partially vaccinated.
CIRCUIT BREAKER EXPANDED AND EXTENDED
During Thursday’s news update, health officials announced the circuit breaker in some areas of the province will be extended for at least another seven days, and will be expanded to include certain areas of the Saint John region.
“While we are making progress, it is important that everyone continue to follow the measures in place where they live,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health. “Every action you take, big and small, has an impact. I encourage you to make good choices so that your impact is a positive one.”
A 14-day circuit breaker in the Saint John area will come into effect on Friday at 6 p.m. The impacted areas include New River Beach and Lepreau, north to the communities of Clarendon and Welsford, east to the community of Head of Millstream, and all communities in Saint John and Kings counties.
The circuit breaker still includes Zone 1 (Moncton region) as far north as and including Sainte-Anne-de-Kent and including Havelock in Zone 2; the northern portion of Zone 3 from and including Deerville and Florenceville-Bristol, but excluding Hayesville and Parker Ridge; and all of Zone 4 (Edmundston region).

CASE DATA
New Brunswick has had 6,380 cumulative cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
In total, 5,709 people have recovered and 114 people have died in the province from COVID-19.
Public health says a total of 525,445 COVID-19 tests have been processed since the start of the pandemic.
The number of cases are broken down by New Brunswick’s seven health zones:
Zone 1 – Moncton region: 1,861 confirmed cases (224 active cases)
Zone 2 – Saint John region: 670 confirmed cases (116 active cases)
Zone 3 – Fredericton region: 1,294 confirmed cases (83 active cases)
Zone 4 – Edmundston region: 1,424 confirmed cases (58 active cases)
Zone 5 – Campbellton region: 674 confirmed cases (49 active cases)
Zone 6 – Bathurst region: 290 confirmed cases (7 active cases)
Zone 7 – Miramichi region: 167 confirmed cases (19 active cases)
Seventeen new cases were reported in the Moncton region (Zone 1) involving:
eight people age 19 and under
two people in their 20s
four people in their 30s
one person in their 40s
two people in their 50s
All 17 cases are under investigation.
Twenty-one new cases were reported in the Saint John region (Zone 2) involving:
11 people age 19 and under
one person in their 20s
three people in their 30s
one person in their 40s
three people in their 50s
two people in their 60s
All 21 cases are under investigation.
Three new cases were reported in the Fredericton region (Zone 3) involving:
one person in their 20s
one person in their 30s
one person in their 60s
All three cases are under investigation.
One new case was reported in the Edmundston region (Zone 4) involving a person in their 20s, and is under investigation.
One new case was reported in the Campbellton region (Zone 5) involving a person in their 30s, and is under investigation.
Five new cases were reported in the Miramichi region (Zone 7) involving:
two people in their 20s
two people in their 30s
one person in their 40s
All five cases are under investigation.
VACCINE UPDATE
As of Friday, 84.7 per cent of New Brunswickers age 12 and older are fully vaccinated and 92.5 per cent have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
In total, 1,233,706 vaccine doses have been administered in New Brunswick.
All provincial government employees, staff in long-term care facilities and staff and volunteers in schools and licensed early learning and child-care facilities must be fully vaccinated by Friday, Nov. 19.
All eligible New Brunswickers can book their second dose appointments now for a date that is at least 28 days after their first dose.

A full list of potential COVID-19 exposure notifications in New Brunswick can be found on the province's website.
Anyone with symptoms of the virus, as well as anyone who has been at the site of a possible public exposure, is urged to request a test online or call Tele-Care at 811 to get an appointment.

Dear Gus,
My Leadership Greater Little Rock class graduated today in an in-person (but physically distant) ceremony with no audience members. I loved the program and learned a lot about leadership and our city. I’m excited about continuing to sculpt our community into something better. I love being recognized for my accomplishments, so today should have been a good day, but it’s important that I tell you--no matter how rosy things appear on the surface--that there are always bad days.
I woke up at 3am today and couldn’t go back to sleep. Yesterday I woke up at 4am. I don’t sleep well when I’m stressed out and have a lot of things on my plate. It’s been weeks since I’ve slept well. Summit is less than two weeks away and I have a lot of tasks still on my plate for that. I’m also the MC for Summit this year, which would normally excite me, but immediate feedback from the audience gives me the energy to do those kinds of things well and this year there will be no in-person audience, so I can’t picture how things will go. I am also moderating a discussion for the Six Bridges Book Festival next weekend and I haven’t started reading one of the books yet. And again, it won’t have a live audience. My love language is touch. I need to be close to people. I also need to express myself through writing, but I have so many things on my plate that I don’t have time to write. I am running myself into the ground and this pandemic has taken away the things that help me restore my energy and keep me going. This morning after I dropped you at school, I realized I was in a bad headspace because I was too tired to focus on my computer screen. Even the littlest tasks seemed impossible. But when I went upstairs to try and sleep, I knew it was useless before I even got to the bed. I just stood there in the bedroom, doing my best not to emotionally collapse.
I decided to ignore all the major stressors in my life and make a list of the minor ones. I needed to accomplish something to make myself feel better. So I drove to a car wash and washed my truck, which has been covered with bugs I mostly picked up a couple of weeks ago when I drove 1,800 miles in four days. And then I cashed a winning lottery ticket I’ve had since Yiayia put it in my stocking 10 months ago. I stopped into a place to get a magnet to put on my phone so I can reattach it to the mount in my truck. I went to the bank to get a new debit card because mine’s expired. I stopped by Tropical Smoothie to settle some beef I’ve had with them for the past week. And then I went home again to face my major stressors, but again, I couldn’t accomplish anything. And so I looked at pictures of you and considered skipping my Leadership Greater Little Rock graduation.
At the last minute, I realized I’d eventually get a grip on my emotions and wish I had gone, so I went upstairs and put on my suit and tie and headed out the door. This photo is the view from my seat, a few feet from the nearest person, a mile from the stage even though I was in the second row. That’s Parker on stage getting his certificate. The ceremony made me feel alone, but I’m glad I went.

When Leon is sick he tends to isolate and take care of himself but won’t refuse anyone when they try to help him out, he’s the oldest of three so he’s used to his younger brothers wanting to help him out when he’s sick. Now Leon can’t lie to save his life, he shuffles his feet a lot and tends to roll his neck a lot when he tries to lie about anything

Adam Higgs, co-writer for the episode: So here we have the aether detecting device, and this is an interesting story as well. We had written this episode or were breaking it, and I was down at comic con visiting the Haven booth where fellow writer Nick Parker was doing a signing. And I looked in the booth and there was a box of props from the set that was going to go on tour with the booth through a bunch of other cities. And this aether detecting device was in there. And we kind of needed it, in a week’s time, back in Halifax to shoot this episode.

Adam Higgs: So I saw it and I was like - Isn’t that …? I just wrote that, I need that. We need to get that back. There was a slight level of panic for about ten seconds.
