Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble — Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit (Spiritmuse)

Celebrating 50 years of his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble bandleader, activist, educator and percussionist Kahil El’Zabar delves deeply into the music he has helped shape over his long career. Open Me is neither a valedictory nostalgia trip nor a lap of honor. Spanning spiritual and avant-garde jazz, African rhythms, soul blues and protest music, El’Zabar and his cohorts, trumpeter Corey Wilkes and baritone saxophonist Alex Harding, are joined by guests Ishmael Ali on cello and violinist James Sanders in collection of original tunes and finely wrought covers that look forward while linking the threads of El’Zabar’s musical legacy.

The quintet finds a devotional center to Miles Davis’ “All Blues”. El’Zabar plays on kalimba and bells, his hums and ululations a prayerful focus. The band play at a meditative pace with Wilkes pushing his tone through Davis’ modal calm into higher registers that evoke Don Cherry whilst Harding provides soulful counterpoint and a solo that carries the barest trace of Coltrane. Sanders’ short solo scratches then soars as if freeing itself from earthly concerns. “The Whole World in His Hands” feels reclaimed as El’Zabar lays down a rolling African beat and his vocal emphasizes the gospel blues root of the song. Behind, the horns and strings provide an intense group sound, with a call and response of short solos that mirror both church service and jam session. Their version of Eugene McDaniel’s “Compared To What” finds El’Zabar’s graveled vocal backed by Harding’s nimble baritone riff, a glorious clarion call from Wilkes and atmospheric flourishes from the strings. The spirit is to the fore, but this band also swings hard. “Hang Tuff” and McCoy Tyner’s “Passion Dance” are exuberant celebrations. The former graced by a dervish of a solo from Sanders and the latter played with all the power of a big band, the horns blasting the theme, El’Zabar all over his kit, the solos uniformly fiery.  

From Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton and Pharoah Sanders to David Murray to Tomeka Reid and Isaiah Collier, El’Zabar’s career spans generations of forward-thinking musicians. The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is the longest running of his many musical projects and on Open Me, they produce a stirring mix of spirituality, groove and fire music. This is history very much alive and kicking.

It wasn't a big deal; a hunt gone wrong. It wasn't even anything spectacular. Basic human slowness and lack of higher vision, because Sam was many things but above all else he was human. Gabriel had lost humans before, it wasn't a new feeling to lose someone who was meant to die. It was an unfortunate downside of befriending mortals. This however wasn't the familiar feeling of grief. It was fear, regret, and heartache. It was the loss of something more. This time he was fast enough and flew towards the weak prayer to a rundown house filled with more than one pissed-off spirit. 

“Shit.” Gabriel didn't have any other words as he rushed to his knees before the gurgling human. ”I got ya,” he whispered, his hands wrapping around Sam's throat. Gabriel's lips tightened, swallowing back the waves of what-ifs at the slick feeling of Sam's blood between his fingers. “Give it a second, kid,” he whispered as terror gripped him even as the blood ran back into Sam's slashed open throat. “Don't try to talk, I'm here.”

The brunette tried to nod and breathe as his windpipe cleared of blood. His fingers gripped the edges of Gabriel's jacket, closing his eyes, and trusting his friend to handle helping Dean and the teenagers with him. Gabriel's eyes didn't look away from Sam as the hunter's consciousness faded at the sudden fall and rise of his blood pressure. Gabriel's eyes filled with grace, hiding his fear in fury and packing it away until Sam was back in the Impala. 

Unfortunately, he had moved past fury quickly after having cleared the ghosts that had lingered within the house. He didn't leave once the Winchesters had returned to the Bunker. It wasn't uncommon for him to hang out with them in the Bunker, but Gabriel's gaze couldn't stop stalling over the wound he had healed or his hands that had healed it. The slick slide of blood and the sound of shuddered breaths wouldn't leave his mind. There was no denying that the fear in his chest had been more than just the terror of losing another mortal friend, and he couldn't ignore it. It was all he thought about as he sat with Sam throughout his day. 

The internal contemplation left him noticeably quieter and filled with anxious movement. He couldn't help the way his gaze lingered or how he seemed to put more into being helpful rather than pushing his luck with the brothers. The older being was sure that Sam had noticed, but Gabriel had brushed anyone’s comments on his fidgeting away with a joke. The being unsure of what to do with the realization of how much Sam had come to mean to him. He pushed the questions about his behavior away until the one person he needed to talk to questioned it, and he couldn’t avoid it anymore. 

“Hey, Gabe?” When the archangel in question didn't look up, Sam signed as he glanced at him from the drawer he was shifting through. “Gabriel?” He repeated more sternly, frowning when the archangel finally looked up.  

“Huh?” 

“You're being quiet,” Sam frowned, twisting around the storage room to face the shorter being bodily. “Are you sure you're okay?” This wasn't the first time he had caught the archangel staring at his hands and falling quiet.

“I'm fine, Sam, stop mother-henning me,” he replied with a curled lip, moving a box for show. 

Sam’s frown didn't lift, studying him for a moment. “Sure.” Hazel eyes rolled as he drew out the word, watching Gabriel try to hide behind humor and his pointless shifting of crates. “Come on, I know something's on your mind. You know you can talk to me,” he offered, looking away from him and back to the list of items they were looking for. “You just seem off, lately,” he said before he read off the list again.

Gabriel huffed, poking at the box he had moved for no reason at all knowing that the weapons and ingredients they needed weren't there. He kicked the toe of his sneakers against the cement floor with a frown, determined not to start lying to Sam now. 

“I’ve just been thinkin’,” he mumbled, looking over his shoulder at the other. 

Sam didn’t look up from the list, his fingers tapping on the tabletop before moving to another cabinet and pulling out a satchel of dried plants. “Yeah, I kinda figured you were in your head.” He stood back up adding it to the small collection they had made, watching as Gabriel moved to take up the list. “Something I can help with?” 

Gabriel offered a hum and a slight nod, eyes looking from the list and towards one of the drawers. “Maybe… probably,” he said as he tossed through a row of drawers before he found the iron brand he was searching for. “I just realized something, when you were hurt like that.” 

The brunette nodded, crossing his arms over his chest as Gabriel walked back with the small token, putting it with the others. “I’ve gotten hurt before, died before. I'm fine. You healed me.” Sam’s broad shoulders shrugged, used to the risk of his profession as he grabbed a larger bowl and a jar of pig’s blood. “Thank you by the way,” he added, unsure if he had already thanked the archangel for finding him. 

The shorter being waved a hand physically brushing off the hunter's thanks. “You don’t have to thank me, Sam,” he said, narrowing and glaring at the row of cabinets and premade potions.

“So,” the brunette started, lips twisting as Gabriel glared at the cabinets before searching through them. “What did you realize?” He asked as Gabriel found the copper dagger the spell required.

He sighed looking at it as he walked back to Sam. “That I really needed you to be safe,” the shorter being mumbled, looking up at the brunette before looking down as he placed the knife with the bits of a spell they had gathered in hopes of helping a couple of hunters. When Gabriel looked back Sam’s brows were pinched and his lips already forming his next words, words Gabriel knew would give him an out if he wanted it. “I didn’t want to lose you. Lose more time together. Before we were even together. I didn’t want to be too slow, or not have enough juice... And once you were safe I just… I just wanted to kiss you.” 

After a moment his lips opened and closed without a sound, and the tall man shuffled his feet. Sam’s brow didn’t loosen nor break Gabriel's serious stare. “Do you,” he cleared his throat, eyes darting away from the archangel before going back to him. “Do you still want to kiss me?” he asked, watching Gabriel’s fine movements closely. 

Gabriel blinked, leaning backward slightly to take in more of Sam. “Yeah?” He asked, more than said making Sam’s brows fall completely, and his lips press into an unpressed line. “I mean yes! Duh, yes I still want to kiss you,” the archangel quickly recovered, returning to the space he had filled before. 

The hunter’s lips crooked up, bending slightly for the archangel to claim his lips. Gabriel hummed into the soft press, fingers gripping the cuffs of Sam’s rolled-up sleeves. The taller man's fingers turned upwards gripping Gabriel’s forearms, parted his lips, and invited Gabriel closer. The archangel smiled into the exchange, tongue diving past the brunette’s lips as his hands climbed higher. His fingers twisted to hold onto the lapels of Sam’s overshirt keeping him close. Sam released a muffled sound against the archangel's exploring tongue, hands sliding to Gabriel’s waist for support against the archangel’s grip. He deepened the kiss as he wrapped his body around the shorter vessel, before dipping his head back to break the tender exchange. Gabriel released a groan of disappointment as he let Sam pull back for air. 

Sam hummed, leaning forward to press a kiss to his lips. “We have to finish helping them,” the hunter said in a chuckled breath against his lips. 

The archangel swallowed, not wanting this to change what they had grown into. “Yeah,” he grumbled, dragging his fingers across Sam's throat before moving higher to cup his cheek. 

“I know,” he hummed, stealing another kiss. “We will.” He sighed, dragging his thumb across Sam’s bottom lip, unable to help but return the brunette's dimpled smile. Gabriel didn’t look away from his fingers as he dragged them over Sam’s smiling lips. “We’re still on for movie night, right?” He questioned, worried about the friendship he had come to cherish. 

“Of course,” Sam nodded, hearing the archangel’s subtext and sharing the worry. He offered another smile, pressing his face to the celestial's hand before he heaved a sigh. “But, not if we don’t finish the spell,” the hunter continued, nipping at Gabriel’s fingers before pulling from his reach. “After we’re done we could set it up in my room instead of the den,” he suggested turning back to the items they had. “Dean and Cas aren't supposed to be back for a few hours.” 

Gabriel hummed watching as Sam made himself busy with the list. “The day I say no to your bed is the day the sun flickers out, Sam-I-Am,” Gabriel hummed, knocking his shoulder against Sam’s side with a bounce of his eyebrow, drinking in the other’s laugh. 

“You're ridiculous.”

A new album from Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble today as well - "Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit"

This is the new offering from Kahil El’Zabar and his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, in conjunction with the legendary group’s 50th anniversary, Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit. Open Me is a joyous honoring of portent new directions of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble; it’s a visionary journey into deep roots and future routes, channeling traditions old and new. It mixes El’Zabar’s original compositions with timeless classics by Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, and Eugene McDaniels. Thus, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble continues affirming their indelible, half-century presence within the continuum of Great Black Music.  Open Me, El’Zabar’s sixth collaboration with Spiritmuse in five years, marks another entry in a run of critically acclaimed recordings that stretch back to the first EHE recording in 1981. The storied multi-percussionist, composer, fashion designer, and former Chair of the Association of Creative Musicians (AACM) is in what might be the most productive form of his career, and now in his seventies, shows no signs of slowing down. Few creative music units can boast such longevity, and fewer still are touring as energetically and recording with the verve of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.  The EHE was founded by El’Zabar in 1974 originally as a quintet, but was soon paired down to its classic form — a trio, featuring El’Zabar on multi-percussion and voice, plus two horns. It was an unusual format, even by the standards of the outward-bound musicians of the AACM: “Some people literally laughed at our unorthodox instrumentation and approach. We were considered even stranger than most AACM bands at the time. I knew in my heart though that that this band had legs, and that my concept was based on logic as it pertains to the history of Great Black Music, i.e. a strong rhythmic foundation, innovative harmonics and counterpoint, well-balanced interplay and cacophony amongst the players, strong individual soloist, highly developed and studied ensemble dynamics, an in-depth grasp of music history, originality, fearlessness, and deep spirituality.” With El’Zabar at the helm, the band’s line-up has always been open to changes, and over the years the EHE has welcomed dozens of revered musicians including Light Henry Huff, Kalaparusha Maurice Macintyre, Joseph Bowie, Hamiett Bluiett, and Craig Harris. The current line-up has been consolidated over two decades — trumpeter Corey Wilkes entered the circle twenty years ago, while baritone sax player Alex Harding joined seven years ago, after having played with El’Zabar since the early 2000s in groups such as Joseph Bowie’s Defunkt.  For Open Me, El’Zabar has chosen to push the sound of the EHE in a new direction by adding string instruments — cello, played by Ishmael Ali, and violin/viola played by James Sanders. The addition of strings opens new textural resonances and timbral dimensions in the Ensemble’s sound, linking the work to the tradition of improvising violin and cello from Ray Nance to Billy Bang, Leroy Jenkins, and Abdul Wadud.  Open Me contains a mixture of originals, including some El’Zabar evergreens such as “Barundi,” “Hang Tuff,” “Ornette,” and “Great Black Music” (often attributed to the Art Ensemble of Chicago but is, in fact,  an El’Zabar composition). Balancing out my first ask with VA!reader, I have another request for a more chill and kind reader, this time with the lad who is banished from the kitchen:

Jeremiah was spending his off time shopping for once, where he spots another person there who was helping other shoppers reach things on the top shelves, giving out directions, and being a nice person all around despite not working at the store. They actively help those in need in the city or town they are in, and listen to the woes of anyone who wishes to speak with them, all of these actions are nails in the coffin of Jeremiah's chances of turning away. Then, Jeremiah sees them in an alley, actively talking to an angel, who addresses them as a minor deity. One of charity and kindness, but also of defense of the defenseless; A deity of less power than him, but still more than capable of escaping should he take the wrong approach, like an animal under a hunter's gaze. He's probably already too obsessed to care at this point, but how does he react to this?

"Do you need help?"

The sound of your voice already draws him in - just as it had the first time he laid eyes on you. Jeremiah was out doing his weekly shopping, avoiding the eye of any who crossed him for watching the one that catched his from afar. You were helping an older man grab a couple things from a higher shelf - brushing off his words of thanks. Your selfless makes Jeremiah's black heart swell with you. You truly were an angel.

He's watched for some time. A mere coincidence if someone were to ask. Every second of your daily life was focused towards helping others, and at their end you simply just - vanish. From where he was now, he could tell that you weren't a normal person, but he just chalked it up to you being the only pure soul in this rotten shell of a city.

Jeremiah follows you as you exit the store. He wasn't going to let you get away this time. The thought of you had become an addiction he needed to rid himself of. He would confront you today under the guise of an accidental encounter, and let everything develop from there. Unfortunately for him, someone else beats him to it.

Rounding the corner to the side of the grocery store, you're stopped as the backdoor opens. The worker makes eye contact with you, right as their nose begins to bleed golden blood. Their eyes roll back till milky - their bloodshot corners turning yellow. The angel pauses to get used to its vessel; Jeremiah instantly on guard.

"Have you reached a verdict?"

Its voice echoes across the lot, yet stays trapped in the edges of your mind. You think over the question - unfazed.

"Yes, I want to stay. More people in this world are in need of my help."

The angel shifts. "Very well.." It grumbles. "I will see what the higher ups have to say about your residency, but make it known that you are an anomaly. Deity or not, you will be culled if you step out of line."

You nod, finding these terms acceptable. It's hard to remember every detail, but you know that you are not from this world, or even its universe. You were born to another reality swallowed by the madness in the hearts of its people, and you'd do whatever it takes so that none suffer the same fate.

Jeremiah can see it now. How your spirit goes beyond the confinement of your mortal form. A celestial - restricting itself to a lesser level for the sake of the masses. Just like any true God would.

"That is fine by me. I try not to be a bother, just someone that leans a shoulder to those in need."

The angel seems these answers acceptable; releasing their hold on the mind in their possession. You catch the person before they crash to the ground; informing them they briefly lost consciousness for reasons you don't know. You help them back inside after they promise to head straight room - finally ready to address the other presence approaching you.

"Hello."

You offer him a smile. What a terrible mistake. The greedy man drinks in your gaze like a deserted soul to water. He absolutely had to have you now. Everything about you was what he needed - craved. A kind hand that could lead him and humanity from darkness. At a lost for words, he turns your gentle expression with a mockery of it.

"Good afternoon..."

"Yes it is." You continue to meet the stranger with open arms. The aura around him reminds you of flies around spoiling fruit.

"I don’t mean to cause alarm... but I overheard everything that just happened."

Your eyes go wide. You couldn’t believe you were so careless. "Yes, well that was just-"

"You don't need to explain, dear... As a man of the church, I witness spectaculars every single day. It's why I've come to you now. If you you looking for those to help, my church is a great place to look. Lots of broken souls looking for a voice to lead them on the right path.. and you could be that someone."

You contemplate the offer. It had its risks, but the sincerity and determination in his eyes prompted you to at least give it a try.

"Hm.. That sounds like it might be beneficial. I accept."

Jeremiah's smile grows. He feels like he's just won the lottery.

"The church is closed for today, but why don't you come by my house? You may stay with me... if you have nowhere else to go."

1. You Actually Might not Need More Meditation – #saidit

You Actually Need More Embodiment Practices and Movement In Your Life.

If you are always:

Spacey

Dizzy

Overthinking obsessed

Prone to Headaches and exhaustion

Here’s WHY:

Kundalini Awakening opens up our higher chakras causing a FLOOD of Energy throughout our nervous system.

It’s VERY COMMON for beginners to have OVERACTIVE higher chakras (seen it so many times) and they need to nurture the lower chakras.

And Stop Trying to OPEN their third eye. It’s already open.

The irony with this, is most people THINK they need more meditation as it’s regurgitated EVERYWHERE to silence the mind or ‘control their thoughts’, right?

What they actually need are embodiment practices that nurture, root them in, and ground out the EXCESS energy they are experiencing.

And this is a very common problem with spiritual teachings that lament meditation as the only tool to enlightenment.

**PSA. it’s possible and I’m boldly saying this, those people did NOT have a Kundalini awakening. They are having the process of a spiritual awakening which is why they stress the importance of meditation and connection to higher self because that’s what THEY NEED.

When you have a Kundalini awakening – you are energetically opening up dormant energy and your higher chakra are overactive as you turn on all these hidden gifts or higher faculties in the mind (we’re exploring this in the Kundalini Book on Substack)

Spoiler Alert: You need the OPPOSITE OF MEDITATION for peace.

2. You need a Spiritual practice that focuses on the Body, Not Just the Mind

A Spiritual Practice Involves both the Mind, body and the Soul, many heavily neglect the body in their spiritual practice and wonder why “it’s just not working for me”

One thing that is written in older metaphysical books is they talk about the importance of the different types of energetic bodies in the bio-field. You have the Physical body, mental body, the energetic body, the emotional body, the spirit body, the astral body and so forth. (graphic below)

while it might be a bit INSANE to start dissecting yourself and asking how do i do spiritual practice will all these different dimension bodies of consciousness? like whaa, You’re missing the point. LOL

Most people just focus on the MENTAL body:

Meditation

Visualization/vision boards

Mindset/ Affirmations /Journaling

Sound Healing

Visual Color Therapy

This means we’re not working with the Emotional body, or etheric physical body, we’re just hanging out in our Head(our higher chakras) and not allowing that energy to travel, move, or be released. It gets stuck up there.

It’s like when you hold back from saying what you REALLY need to say. YOU KNOW YOU JUST NEED TO SAY IT, but you bite your tongue and hold back and it bottles up inside of you as annoyance. That’s what you do with your energy when you strictly focus on Mental Spiritual practice alone. ( cough symptoms cough 😉)

Soul Medicine: Design your Spiritual practice around Mind-Body Ritual Practices that help you both with the mind and the body. So you do NOT experience what i lovingly call “Spiritual Burnout”

Thinking Point: Begin to think about how can you MERGE your Practice so it supports both your Mind and your body.

3. You don’t need to “Get Grounded” – You need to feel safe in your Nervous System.

I’ve been around the block or two in the spiritual community and the MOST COMMON COMPLAINT IS: “Ashley, meditating & EFT isn’t working for me, how do I stay grounded?”

this is Root Chakra Work 101 – You need to feel safe in your body – you don’t need to visualize yourself as a tree! 🌳🌴🌲

For Realzy – Let’s break the new age bullshit with a hefty dose of psych 101. A lot of what is felt as ‘being ungrounded’ is you feeling activated in your N.S. as not feeling safe, supported or secure in your body.

You are tripping on past and future thinking (eckhart tolle fans know what i mean 💃 )

Start playing with the dirt and get in the garden, get an exercise routine, take a walk, put on music and dance, do jumping jacks, take 10 min house chore break,

I loved some albums this month (the official winner, for the record, is Neil's self-titled 1968 debut), but nothing I encountered musically had quite the same effect on me as reading this book, Neil's first autobiography. I was repeatedly struck with the impression that it feels more like an album than a book anyway. So I feel like it's possible to react to it without spoiling it for anyone who might be interested in reading it.

Each "chapter" is like a song, varied in subject, length, depth, and tone. Incongruously arranged, poetic, artistic, heavy, real, unrelenting as a swift stream of consciousness. Some highly focused on a technical marvel, others loosely winding through a series of chronological series events, or trudging through the way life unfolds to bring about the here and now, what it looks like, how it feels. Somehow, even without the aid of sound, Neil communicates something moving, honest, and relatable. Knowing he's lucky to be where he is but also that he's worked very hard for it. Adoring his fractured family, bandmates, friends and partners along the way and so grateful for what they brought to him through the lenses of advancing age. Lamenting a simpler time, one of higher quality and a real connection to an entire generation. Actively engaging in the process of coming to "love a future I don't expect." Making observations that hit so close to the heart without even trying.

Years ago, beginning to grow to love him, I felt like I saw parts of me there, as is not an uncommon reason to link to artists initially. I felt a nearly instant kinship through the music even if its messages were sometimes too nuanced or even too emotional for me to be willing to contend with. I somehow felt “a lot like he was” without knowing why. Now, in his own words presented in plain language, I see some of those reasons so clearly. As usual, I'm struck with the overwhelming shared desire to cultivate a world where everything is simpler and purer and less corrupted by capitalism and commercialism, less motivated by politics and power, less hurried, pre-packaged, and distilled into convenience. I too want the real things, those ways of consuming and enjoying what is genuine. I want those connections to the artists that seemed so easy in the past. I mourn that generation, a world that I have missed out on. I grieve for the company I'll never keep, the songs I'll never sing, the spirit I'll never set free.

While the work itself is not one of sadness but of celebration, it's real. And you can't reflect on better times without casting the present in a bit of a shadow. There are pearls of wisdom strewn along the path down memory lane, punctuated by lamentations on the state of things. It's like a one-sided conversation where the listener has nothing to say and everything to learn. So with a heavy heart in recovery from being blown open yet again, I have to say thank you thank you thank you Neil, for being who you are are and sharing it with us so openly and unapologetically through yet another medium.

Hello dear, what exactly do you want me to help you with? Do you want my interpretation/advice? Well, I would say that dreaming about your third eye chakra is generally a positive thing!

Though, what exactly did you dream about? About you're third eye opening up or it being blocked? There are many different interpretations of dreaming about a third eye (chakra).. it might be useful to look up certain things of your dreams, there are many useful websites for dream interpretation!

In a broader sense, such dreams could promise prosperity and good luck and more specifically symbolise the strengthening of faith and the awakening of paranormal/extraordinary abilities! Which is in regards to your shifting journey a really good sign!

As you also experience a feeling of pressure on your forehead (probably between your eyebrows - where your 3rd eye chakra is) I assume you're third eye charka is "opening up" or awakening.

The THIRD EYE CHAKRA is associated with wisdom and intuition, self realization and transcendence. When we're experiencing a third eye charka awakening, they say we start becoming aware of the field of energy, we'll realize we are not just our bodies, minds, and emotions, we will be able to access planes of higher consciousness and we'll discover that peace, love and joy are not found outside of us!

- these realization all sound pretty good and useful if we think about reality shifting or even manifesting!

Though there are often some "side effects" you'll might experience other than the previous mentioned head aches (I already talked about this in one of my PAC readings I think): vivid dreams and nightmares; starting to picture things in your mind before they happen; a sense that colors are brighter, sounds are louder and that your environment is sharper; feeling like you are changing on a fundamental level, even if you struggle to put it into words; scary accurate intuition; being less fearless or thinking you're superhuman (lol); being more sensitive to stimulative environments; feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information you're taking in; behaving in a chaotic way; also astral projection!

Things that seem to help with some of the side effects are daily meditation and enough sleep! Using essential oils could also help - especially with the headaches. Another thing you could do is using affirmations like “I acknowledge the wisdom that comes from within me” and “I am open to the inner guidance of my third eye”, if you like affirming.

You know, the awakening of your third eye charka is a process. These side effects might be prominent in the beginning but they'll lessen as you progress and balance yourself. So, don't worry too much!

Regarding the DRAGONFLIES...

My spirit animal deck calls the dragonfly the master of light, illusion and the mind. It says that it is an ancient and ethereal creatures that awakes a sense of wonder in all. It is a symbol of the mind - as it is always moving, shifting, shimmering and changing. It reminds us to calm the mind so that the light of wisdom can shine through - especially if you feel like 'you can't concentrate" or that "your mind is too busy". Maybe try some basic breathing techniques to calm your mind!

If you ask google they say that dragonflies are a symbol of self that comes with maturity. They can symbolise going past self-created illusions that limit our growth and ability to change. They are associated with transformation, personal growth, fortune and prosperity! Seeing them could mean that we should explore our feelings, emotions, and the inner-self more but in an joyful and light manner!

Both, your third eye chakra experiences and the dragonflies, stand for transformation and enlightenment. You are evolving. You're getting clarity and awaken your mind to a 'higher truth' so to say (your place in this universe and your powers - shifting). Overall, a good sign!

But please take care of yourself and your body. If you feel like your mind is 'overworked', take some time to rest/sleep and do simple tasks or meditate to relief your mind every once in a while!

Meeting My Shamanic Teacher

An excerpt from my memoir, Riding Spirit Horse: A Journey into Shamanism.

In November of 1988, my wife and I sold our home in Bend, Oregon and moved to Sedona, Arizona. I was on a spiritual quest, and my wife was a reluctant companion. At that time, Sedona was becoming known as a spiritual mecca, attracting pilgrims from around the world. I was one of those pilgrims. My artistic wife found work in one of Sedona's well known art galleries, and I found work as a bartender at a Sedona racquet club. Art and tennis funded our spiritual quests.

After several relatively uneventful months in Sedona, I finally had a profound shamanic experience. I attended my first shamanic drumming circle a few blocks from our apartment. I had picked up an event flyer in a neighborhood metaphysical bookstore which read:

"Shamanic Drumming Circle. Jade Grigori is a traditional shaman of Mongolian ancestry. In keeping with his intent to make accessible to all peoples, regardless of blood line, the knowledge and practice of 'The Ways' of Shamanism, he is calling forth a drum circle. Those of the community seeking to join together with others of like heart-beat in learning and experiencing the empowerment and filling of the light-body through shamanic drum ways, are invited to participate. Tuesday Nights, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m."

When I arrived at the host's house, I joined about 15 people sitting casually in a circle around the perimeter of the living room floor. Some people had drums and others did not. Most of the furniture had been removed to accommodate a large gathering. Two of the participants were percussionists who were giving a performance at a local venue after the drum circle. They brought a wide assortment of frame and ethnic drums. They passed instruments around the circle so that each person had a drum if they chose to play. I received a rawhide frame drum and beater as it came round the circle to me. I had never played a frame drum before. It was a very eclectic mix of people and rhythm instruments. I came to know a few of these participants very well in the months to come.

After our host introduced Jade, the elder shaman entered the room and sat down in our circle. His long hair was braided in a ponytail and he wore a deerskin jacket and a red headband. He carried a double-sided frame drum and a large medicine bundle. Jade laid down his drum and opened the leather bundle, removing feathers and ritual objects. He then lit a charcoal disc in an incense burner. In the darkened room, I could see blue sparks dance off of the charcoal as the sacred fire came to life. Jade sprinkled herbs on the burning charcoal and began smudging his sacred objects with three eagle feathers, fanning the smoke outward into the entire space. Smudging is the burning of herbs or incense for cleansing, purification and protection of sacred space.

Double-headed drums

Jade explained that a double-headed drum is preferred by some shamans for it constitutes a microcosm of the Universe, unites the masculine and feminine principles, and produces sounds with a tremendous dynamic range. The higher-pitched (red) head of the drum tends to affect higher levels of consciousness. Typically, shamans associate this drumhead with the sky, Upper World and masculine energy. It is linked to the mythic Spirit Eagle who perches atop the World Tree. Eagle Brother will carry the shaman's prayers to the Upper World, or the shaman may transform into Spirit Eagle and soar into the celestial realm. The shaman and the eagle are both intercessors between the celestial and human realms.

The opposite or lower-pitched (black) head of the drum affects deeper levels of consciousness. It is commonly associated with the Lower World, feminine energy and the archetypal Horse of mythology. The repetitive, droning rhythm of shamanic drumming is suggestive of a horse on a journey. Throughout Mongolia, shamans describe it as the exalted, buoyant state that one mounts and rides from plane to plane. Mongolian shamans ride omisi murin, their name for Spirit Horse, into the Lower World on healing journeys or direct Spirit Horse to carry the power and healing to the intended destination.

The rim of the drum is associated with the Middle World and the World Tree. The frame of the shaman's drum is invariably made of wood derived from a sacred tree associated with the Tree of Life or World Tree. Like the World Tree, which links the upper and lower realms of existence, the rim links the two sides of the drum--the yin and the yang. A double-headed drum integrates the feminine and masculine aspects of the Universe within itself. It restores the balance of these two opposite yet complementary energies.

Three-round shamanic drum journey

After smudging, Jade instructed us in the ritual use of the sacrament tobacco, the unifying thread of communication between humans and the spiritual powers. He showed us how to empower our drums by offering tobacco smoke or a pinch of tobacco. Offering grandfather tobacco carries our prayers to the "Loom of Creation," causing the "Tapestry of Creation" to reweave itself in accordance with those prayers.

Next, Jade taught us the drum beats for invoking Eagle Brother and Spirit Horse.(1) He instructed us to play the rhythms in unison so that the drumming creates a mesmerizing effect to induce trance. He cautioned us to avoid jam or free form drumming, which produces a cacophony of competing beats. The goal is to produce a sound that is unifying and consciousness-shifting. Sound waves carry the specific intention or desired outcome of the ceremony. Together the drummers create the necessary rhythmic container that channels the energy generated by the ritual performance toward the intended objective.

After learning the two rhythms, Jade set a group intention and then led us in a three-round shamanic drum journey. During the first round, we drummed the eagle-beat on the celestial (higher-pitched) head of our drums and soared on the wings of Eagle Brother into the Upper World. In the second round, we drummed the horse-beat on the Lower World (lower-pitched) head of our drums and rode Spirit Horse on a journey into the Lower World. In the third round, we switched back to the celestial side of our drums and again drummed the eagle-beat, offering prayers of thanks and gratitude to Eagle Brother and Spirit Horse for their help and assistance. Finally, Jade signaled the end of our journey and the drum circle with four strong beats.

I was transformed by the power of that drum circle--it was a defining moment in my life. There was something magical about our group journey experience. Ecstatic trance seemed to be more powerful and transcendent in a group setting. The vibrant energy was unifying, expansive and palpable. I could feel the spirits in the room. Shamanic drumming shook the Earth beneath me, split me wide open and lifted my spirit skyward. The ecstatic rhythms resonated to my very core. From that point on, I was hooked on drumming!

The next day, I went back to the store where I had picked up the drum circle flyer and purchased an octagonal double-sided frame drum. I returned week after week to Jade's shamanic drumming circles to learn the myths, healing rhythms and drum ways of an ancient shamanic lineage. Jade encouraged us to drum as often as possible in between our weekly gatherings. I would hike almost daily into one of the many red sandstone canyons around Sedona to drum. I gradually built up stamina while learning how to play the drum and ride its rhythm at the same time. Drumming inspired and empowered me in a way I had never felt before. Through drumming, I found a meaningful way to express my inner self without words. More importantly, I discovered my true calling--shamanic drumming.

Part 1: Where does the spirits and energies beyond our comprehension exist? (this is a matter wether you belive in ghost or not, and if you do please read it)

Researches have found out, "The entire rainbow of radiation observable to the human eye only makes up a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum – about 0.0035% .This range of wavelengths is known as visible light."

So what is the rest 99% that we can not see?

Even "Humans can detect sounds in a frequency range from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. (Human infants can actually hear frequencies slightly higher than 20 kHz, but lose some high-frequency sensitivity as they mature; the upper limit in average adults is often closer to 15–17 kHz.)" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK10924/

So what about the rest of the frequency? It makes me wonder what we possibly could be missing out. I'm not gonna go to much in details about this, but it is known diffrent animals can both hear diffrent frequencies and see diffrent wavelengths than us humans. Both higher and lower, like for example a dog and a bat even those cool ass mantis shrimp that can see diffrent types of light like infrared and ultraviolet.

So what about beyond that wave length? Microwaves, no living organism can sence or see that wave length.

Here is my thought, energy can't be destroyed so it will be reformed into something else. When a human dies, energy is released out of our bodies. So apart of us keep floating around and we become one again with Mother nature, maybe we even float beyond our earth.

This is law of the conservation. Energies like living organisms happen to end up in a waveleangth we humans can't sence.

How do spirits think? Obviously particals don't have the consciousness as when we were physically beings.

But almost everything do have a memory, likewater (tho for a couple months). So if these energies that are released from our bodies bring with it some of our deepest habits and memories, that means we ARE these energies floating around. Like it isn't just our particals, it's more than that

So how does spirit take form? Is it illusions of the memories the particals hold? Like the particals effect our brains in a way that it could form an image of the spirit, like it used to look like. But how do the spirit have the consciousness to do something like that?

Shaman Drummer The Magic of Shapeshifting. One of the best ways to connect with power animals is through the art of shapeshifting. In the shaman’s world, animals are kin, an ancient belief reflected in mythology and in animism – the belief that non-human entities are spiritual beings. It is a mental world where the seen and the unseen; the material and the spiritual merge. As their helping spirits, the shamans “might use animals, anything that grows,” says Osuitok Ipeelee, an esteemed Artic Inuit sculptor. “It was well known that the animals the shamans controlled had the ability to turn into humans. When a shaman was using his magic he had a real change of personality. When the animals entered into him he’d be chanting loudly; if a shaman was turning into a certain animal, he’d make that animal sound. Once he was filled inside, he’d begin to change; his face and his skin followed."1 

Shapeshifting is more than just transforming into an animal as is often depicted in shamanic accounts and tales. It is the ability to shift your energies to adapt to the demands and changes of daily life. We all learn which activities, behaviors, and attitudes support or hinder our survival and growth. It is a natural and instinctual ability that we all share. The minimal development of this talent is the ability to mimic. We often mimic for the purpose of learning something or to blend in with our social or physical environment. It implies changing one’s pattern of appearance or behavior, rather than just using what you already have. Actors, for example, are known for their ability to take on the characteristics of another person or thing. 

A shapeshifter is one who manipulates their aura to access a higher or inner power in order to grow and learn. The human aura is the energy field that surrounds the human body in all directions. All shapeshifting occurs on an energy level. If everything is broadcasting its own energy pattern and if you could match and rebroadcast the same pattern, then you would take on the appearance and qualities of the thing you were matching. The only constraining factor is the degree of belief, connection, and energy. To experience this for yourself, try the following simple exercise: 

1. Create sacred space as you would for other spiritual work, dim the lights, and sit comfortably erect in a chair or on the floor.

2. Close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths.

3. Call upon an animal that you have an affinity with. Visualize and invite this animal spirit to come into your body and consciousness.

4. Meditate with it. Be open to the feelings and sensations of being that animal. It is not uncommon to be and see the animal at the same time.

5. Simply observe whatever happens for a few minutes, and then thank the spirit animal and release it. 

Shapeshifting to any degree will help you develop a kinship with your animal relatives. Learning to shift your consciousness, to align with and adapt your energies to power animals, opens your heart and mind to the wisdom and strength of the animal world. You must empty yourself so that spirit can embody you. "Become like a hollow bone,” a Lakota elder once advised me in the sweat lodge.
