october writing prompt #15 - "even if you hate me, i'm yours.”

"What are you doing, Cater?"

The Heartslabyul junior just grinned at you, something flirty and lighthearted surely on the tip of his tongue. Like it always was. He always downplayed whatever you asked of him, always acted like he could do no wrong or that you should be happy to just be around him.

"Don't act like that, songbird! Come on, you'll love it, promise."

So, probably trying to drag you into some scheme or another. That seemed like all he ever did. Last time it landed in you being locked out of Ramshackle overnight. You weren't doing this again.

"No. Absolutely not. You need to cut it out, seriously. I'm not just here for your entertainment - go bug Adeuce or something. I have things I need to get done, and playing in your little games is not on that list."

"Reallyyy? Not even for meee?" He croons at you with something mischievous dancing in his eyes, and you're half-tempted to check for hidden cameras if he's acting like this. He had been on a kick with stupid little pranks lately. Whatever he's thinking of was sure to get him plenty of views on Magicam, that's for sure. "C'mon, just this once! I won't bug you again."

"You say that every time." He frowns when he sees you sigh, and you internally cheer at the idea that you might be able to shake him off. "Grim is waiting back at Ramshackle. I've gotta go."

Cater blocks you off when you move to leave, blocking the hallway. You glare at him, but something seems... off.

"Please?"

His tone is sweet, honeyed as always, but something about how he's cutting off your way out sends chills down your spine. There wasn't anyone else around - it was just you two, and it was the end of the hallway. All that was behind you was a couple empty classrooms and the bathroom, where you had just come from.

"Cater, move." It's a fight to keep your voice strong, but you do it, glaring at him with all that you can muster. "I have to go."

He smiles at you, but his eyes are eerily blank.

"You know, I don't think this is really fair. I'd do anything you asked me to, really, but whenever I ask you anything you're just full of excuses."

A step forward, a rising aggression in his stance.

"Any time I come around, you act like it's the worst thing in the world to see me. Do you hate me?"

There's not a chance to even open your mouth, taking steps backwards every time he moves closer, hands moving to your pockets to see if you have anything to get yourself out of here if worst comes to worst.

You don't.

There's not enough time to try and get into your bag, not with how he's cornering you.

"That's okay, songbird. Even if you hate me, I'm yours."

I love this fandom, but I do not love this fandom lmao

People can be so toxic, and it’s always about ships. Obviously, this isn’t exclusive to the Invader Zim fandom, but I see it a lot here. A lot. It’s made so many people leave the platform because of the unnecessary discourse. So many artists have been bullied off of Tumblr or this hell-fandom has made people dislike their IZ interest in general, anymore. Just let people make art, man. They aren’t hurting anyone.

I also find it a bit odd that it’s always ZADR getting hate on. Any ship involving Zim, really. Why don’t people put the same energy into TAGR? (To clarify; I don’t think either ship should be hated on. I just find it rather odd that I really only see ZADR trashed.) People will always try to make the argument, “Well, Dib is a child. Zim isn’t.” Who says? Jhonen? The known troll? I don’t take his word for fact, to be honest.

It’s pretty obvious in the series (show, comics, and movie) that Zim is portrayed to be child-like. It would be weird (and not the type of fun-weird that’s regularly in the series) if he was an adult. It wouldn’t make much sense. Leave the funny little spacebug be.

I don’t know, it just majorly irks me (pun half intended). Sorry for the little rant.

Edit after months: Also, there is an old magazine that stated Zim is a child. Behold.

Heyyyyyyyy sorry for the late answer, I have the memory of a goldfish and forgot my inbox was a Thing that existed. It will probably happen again. Thank you for the ask tho!!

I wouldn't say I reference stuff from my life, but it's more like stories I like and things I see.

Here are some examples relating mostly to "Black and White", since it's my most developed WIP. August's pet lion is named Rike after a character from my favourite book series. Markov's name is a reference to a book in Doki Doki Literature Club. Diedrich's hairstyle comes from an illustration in a Geronimo Stilton book (yes, actually). Lucille's name comes from a movie that I think is called A Monster in Paris? Anna's name and look are inspired by the illustration on my mother's copy of Anna Karenina. (I feel like you can kinda Tell I was 13-14 when I first drafted this WIP)

In the dystopia WIP, Veera and Alexis's names and characters come from an Oscar Wilde play I like named Vera; or The Nihilist, the characters that inspired them being, of course, Vera and Alexis. Their whole thing was that play Alexis was secretly the Tsarevich, who had secretly joined the Nihilists because his ideology aligned with theirs, and play Vera was the leader of the Nihilists and, like. Yeah, it's them. Except it's Veera who's undercover. The midpoint of their arcs is similar to the end of the play too. In that same WIP, Lev Kalenev's name comes from Lev Tolstoy because I was too lazy to look up Russian names. Same with his daughter, Olga Kalenev, whose name comes from one of Princess Anastasia's sisters because Cristover's story started as an Anastasia retelling.

I used to have a WIP where a character was named Oriana as a reference to a Sophia de Mello Breyner book I was forced to read in 5th grade. And she had a son named Luís named after a classmate I disliked (he was an asshole btw).

This happens mostly with names because sometimes I'm too lazy to look up names of that nationality. They're supposed to be minor characters, but they always end up growing arcs and plot. As all writers have said at some point: "oops".
