started my altered book! got gifted this 1960s book about identifying valuable vintage stuff, very interesting!! lots of black and white pictures. but im using it to play with my watercolours 🥰 testing how they interact with the (extremely thirsty) old book pages and the likes.
(also the green leaves type of pages remind me of worm on a string)
remember to play with your art! maybe even have a dedicated no fucks given sketchbook, or an old book like me!

Did you know? The smell of old books can tell you a lot! As the paper slowly decomposes in a book, it gives off odors that can tell you what the paper was made from and when the book was printed. Before 1845, paper in books was usually manufactured from cotton and linen rags. The 1840s saw the invention of a process to manufacture paper from wood pulp fibers. Wood pulp paper usually contains lignin, a substance that breaks down more rapidly and gives books that distinctive “old book smell”. Around 1970, a new process was introduced that removed the lignin so that paper would degrade more slowly. Inks and adhesives have changed over time as well, which also changes the smell of a book. Even if the print date isn’t included in the book, science can tell us how old a book is, just from the smell!

I can smell that top edition. The bottom edition looks like supplementary material for a high school textbook.

One of the reasons I have yet to switch to an E-Reader.
The aroma of a used book gives the same pleasure to a bibliophile as a fine wine does to one who has studied the many facets of adult grape juice.

Why Do Old Books Smell So Good?
Have you ever wandered into an old library or dusty bookshop and paused to breathe in that familiar vanilla-coffee-grassy scent wafting off the aged tomes? That nostalgic olfactory experience is thanks to a bouquet of chemical compounds. Modern books smell different because of changes in manufacturing, while old books release distinctive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as they slowly decay.…
