Ma'am, where are your legs?

Hero has FINALLY shed all his winter coat, and is now in 'satiny sleek' mode. Very pettable. His ears are unhappy, but that isn't because of the pets, it's the camera. He hates cameras.

Today, December’s full Moon is most commonly known as the Cold Moon—a Mohawk name that conveys the frigid conditions of this time of year, when cold weather truly begins to grip us.
This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
In Europe, ancient pagans called the December full Moon the “Moon Before Yule,” in honor of the Yuletide festival celebrating the return of the sun heralded by winter solstice.

“Yule” comes from Old English geol, which shares a history with the equivalent word from Old Norse, jól. Both these words referred to a midwinter festival centered around the winter solstice, which traditionally marked the halfway point of the winter season. After the solstice—the shortest day of the year—the days again begin to grow longer, so it’s thought that Yule was a celebration of the re-appearance of the Sun &the fertile land’s rebirth.
The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs and traditions associated with it vary widely.
Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin, and the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht ("Mothers' Night")
Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane. The Goddess is seen in her virgin Maiden aspect
In towns and cities throughout Sweden during the Christmas season, large goats are constructed out of straw. It is thought that the tradition originated in ancient times, perhaps as a tribute to the god Thor, who was said to ride in a chariot pulled by goats. In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration, and the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
Related festivals:
Christmas- An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God, primarily observed on December 25th
Hanukkah- A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights & days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah.
Kwanzaa- An annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1st, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West & Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.
A Kwanzaa ceremony may include drumming and musical selections, libations, a reading of the African Pledge & the Principles of Blackness, reflection on the Pan-African colors, a discussion of the African principle of the day or a chapter in African history, a candle-lighting ritual, artistic performance & finally, a feast of faith (Karamu Ya Imani).
Saturnalia-
is an ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar & later expanded with festivities through to 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves and freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona-
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire it was celebrated on December 18th.
Epona is known to be one of a very few Gaulish deities whose names were spread to the rest of the Roman Empire. This seems to have happened because Roman cavalry units stationed in Gaul followed Her & adopted her as their Patroness. This may have started because many of the cavalry troops were conscripted from Gaul as they were superb horsemen. From Gaul the Romans took Epona with them including to Rome where She was given her own feast day on the 18 December. They worshipped her as Epona Augusta or Epona Regina & invoked her on behalf of the Emperor. She even had a shrine in the barracks of the Imperial Bodyguard.
Hunting of the Wren-
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on the 26 December, St. Stephen's Day. It consists of groups of people going around villages and towns singing and dancing a traditional song and dance around a decorated wren pole.
The earliest and most common folklore story accounting for the origin of hunt the wren tells of a fairy/enchantress/witch whose beauty lures the men of the Isle of Man to harm, for which she is chased and is changed into the form of a wren. It is therefore in punishment for her actions that the wren is hunted on St. Stephen's Day

The Bad Batch as horses at my friend's barn
Hunter: Antonio. In charge sometimes. Cautious in new situations. Shortest. Doing his best.
Tech: Bee. She's so smart. So incredibly smart and quick and everyone knows it. Constantly communicating and thinking. Asks a million questions while on trail based on ear position alone.
Wrecker: Hudson. Biggest and the strongest. Very intelligent. Highly food motivated. Good with kids.
Echo: Nutmeg. The oldest. No one is sure how old, but definitely the oldest. Was skin and bones when rescued, but she fought to live. Joints ache sometimes, but she could easily kill a man. Do not try to fight her you will not win.
Crosshair: Brioso. Causes trouble just for fun. Is always paying attention. Naps.
(Sorry there are only five horses or I would have included Omega)
Some pictures that are hopefully not too big so they don't take up a ton of screen space:

Townsends just uploaded a video where he unearths a large, decorated ceramic vessel that contains the corpse of a horse that has been preserved in salted butter since 1758. Back then, they mutilated animals and humans that were precious to them as a form of divination. This horse in particular had been contorted to have a toadlike appearance and shaved bison horns grafted to its mouth to form an array of six tusks. It was posed so that it appears to be sipping from a silver chalice, decorated with elaborately carved bone icons. Jon believes that the chalice is a metaphor for prosperity. While the horse was still alive, they would keep the goblet filled with a nutritious wine of sow milk to keep the animal alive and in relative comfort. Buried under a gambling hall, the beast was intended to represent the Philadelphian god of luck and hard spirits; the inscriptions carved into the wall planks detail the extensive prayer that they would chant to imbue each liquor cask with merriment without hangover. It's hard to tell how quickly they would recite the hymn, but the length implies that it would take at least a few hours - Jon said that he would cover this in a future Nutmeg Tavern livestream. Apparently the butter did a surprisingly good job at preserving the flesh, but it altered the texture and flavor in a way that makes it taste reminiscent of foie gras.

Inside the Dirty Donkey
**Warning! This meta contains spoilers and speculation for S3. Do NOT tag Neil!**
Time to get comfy, folks. Get your drink of choice, be it a cupperty, coffee, or nip of sherry, and find a seat. You’ll definitely want to be sitting down for this one. We’re going to the pub!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The name is apparently a favorite of NG’s, used in his short story “We Can Get Them For You Wholesale.” And it also appears in the Sandman AU.
Tumblr media
In the short story above the protagonist is a jilted lover who tries to organize an assassin for his fiancé who is having an affair with another man at their shared workplace. He meets the ‘salesman’ of the firm he contacts at a pub called the Dirty Donkey, and it escalates from there. The story is freely available online, so you can search it up if you really want to read it, it won’t take long. It mentions a pale horse, which is usually what Death rides in on, and is appropriate in the context of that story.
Tumblr media
The question we need to ask is how does the name The Dirty Donkey apply to the Good Omens AU? Are there any context to the name at all?
There are several meanings for a dirty donkey:
Its a slang or joke name for a black horse (not particularly a dark horse, that has a different meaning altogether)
A cocktail
A sex position (I’ll let you look that one up yourself…)
Tumblr media
Probably the first thing we need to talk about, though is an actual donkey itself, in relation to Jesus, as S2 is full of Jesus references and hints to the Second Coming in S3. Yep, it was all there in front of us, but we were too focused on other things. If you remember your Bible teachings, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, because he came in peace. In ancient times leaders rode horses if they went to war, or if they came in conquest. But arriving by donkey meant you came with peaceful intentions.
But Jesus didn't turn up in S2, you say. And certainly not on any hairy beast. Ah, but he did - metaphorically. Gabriel as Jim turned up - he came up the street, by (the Dirty) Donkey, walking through spilled blood tomatoes, then mentioned his arms were no longer sore (because he had been taken off the cross.) MrPeriod talks more about how Jim represents Jesus here, and it might be worth revisiting it at length another time, as there is quite a bit to unpack there.
There are also the two big golden lions perched on either end of the bar inside the pub, that look rather ominous. The lions are strongly connected to Jesus and his resurrection, representing his return. (I'm still planning to have a better look for more lions in both S1 and S2, but that is still a WIP at the moment.)
There is also the scene in 1941 where the Nazi zombies stagger into the Dirty Donkey and spy on Aziraphale and Crowley through the windows through to the book shop, but all they manage to get is “Banana, fish, gorilla, shoe lace with a dash of nutmeg.” It sounds a bit like a cocktail reference – well, the nutmeg is definitely a GO ref to a certain cocktail – but the cocktail called a Dirty Donkey has cinnamon in it, in the form of cinnamon schnapps, not nutmeg – plus chocolate liqueur and rum. So maybe not.
But perhaps the most important thing we have to examine is the conversation about Jane Austin that Aziraphale and Crowley have in the pub, in S2E2. Because its got so many levels you just about need a break for extra oxygen half way down. Ha! And you thought it was a couple of funny throw-away lines about how Aziraphale saw human romance...
OK, this is the section of dialogue we are going to look at:
AZIRAPHALE: If you're going to invoke fiction, you might as well do it properly. CROWLEY: Properly? AZIRAPHALE: You remember Jane Austen? CROWLEY: Yeah. I'm not gonna forget her in a hurry, am I? The brains behind the 1810 Clerkenwell Diamond Robbery. Brandy smuggler. Master spy. What a piece of work. AZIRAPHALE: She wrote books. Novels. CROWLEY: Jane? Austen? AZIRAPHALE: Yes! CROWLEY: Whoa, bit of a dark horse. Novels, eh? AZIRAPHALE: Yes. They were very good. CROWLEY: Well. No, I'm just surprised, that's all. You think you know someone. AZIRAPHALE: She had balls. CROWLEY: Well.... AZIRAPHALE: Cotillion balls. People would gather and do some formal dancing and then realize they had misunderstood each other and were actually deeply in love.
Ready to dive into the levels on the Jane Austen conversation? Let's go...
Level 1: It’s a conversation about the novelist Jane Austen, and it sounds like they both met her, but they remember her in different ways – and Crowley’s memory is rather surprising!
Tumblr media
Level 2: There is a mention of a robbery. This makes the parallel with the 1967 scene in S1E3 Hard Times, where Crowley has a secret meeting in the Dirty Donkey to plan a robbery to steal holy water from a church. The robbery in the above conversation involves diamonds (are you taking note/s? This is important!) from Clerkenwell, a district of London of some notoriety. It was famous for it watchmakers and jewelers, but it was also the home of Oliver Cromwell, who has a link to the 1650 date mentioned in S2E1 and the Eccles cakes, to Charles Dickens (author of A Tale of Two Cities, a book of note for GO) Oh, and both times Crowley is wearing a "Tactical Turtleneck", which others have noted he wears when he is doing his own master spy work, such planning or discussing robberies, or sneaking into Heaven to rob them of information!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Level 3: There is Aziraphale’s idea about how a romance should be conducted, by hosting a cotillion ball with formal dancing, because he's read all those romantic novels by Austen. And we get to see that played out in S2E5 in the eldritch ball. Crowley's idea of a romance was to get caught in the rain and kiss, then - vavoom!
Tumblr media
Level 4: Why mention this apparently fictional side to an author of fictional romance? Well, on one hand, it’s an interesting but dark set-up for a joke later at the beginning of S2E6. I ended up discussing it at length here, but the short of it is that it is our usual human custom not to speak ill of the dead, and this is a form of extreme black-and-white thinking. Here, Aziraphale speaks of the good/white side of Jane Austen, that is well known, but Crowley speaks of the black/supposedly forgotten or unspoken bad side of Austen.
Tumblr media
Level 5: Here’s the S3 information. Have you been paying attention? Did you take note? The parallels were the robberies between a church, and diamonds? That she was a brandy smuggler? Do you know where they smuggled brandy from? And do you know where Austen actually lived? On the South Downs, overlooking the Channel to France…
Whew. I think I need a drink after that. Cheers!
[Edit: I've recently finished a meta on the Bentley and how that relates to black horses, and it's occurred to me why the ethereal lift, or "hellevator," is in the entrance to the Dirty Donkey. Black horses are symbolic spirit guides between the worlds of the living and the dead, so this makes the perfect place to put the lift!]

Animals in Good Omens (for potential symbolism reasons)
Direct, plot-relevant appearances:
Nightingales (Obvious)
Snakes (Crowley!)
Geckos (Children in disguise)
Lions (Adam and Eve’s first threat and first kill; also seems to appear on Aziraphale's ring)
Oxen (Devoured by Aziraphale; strong of constitution)
Goats (Blameless)
Crows (Disguised goats)
Hounds (Hellhound; transformed by loyalty)
Unicorns (the Great Flood; a precious thing lost to God's wrath)
Flies (Beelzebub's animal and the shape of the vessel that Gabriel puts his memory in)
Mentions that feel like they may or may not be plot-relevant:
Dinosaurs (Mentioned at the beginning of the series as fossils that God planted as a "joke")
Horses (Mentioned in the book and at the Globe; multiple statues in the shop, including the one where Crowley puts his glasses)
Ducks (Crowley and Aziraphale feed them, and Crowley in particular shows concern for their well-being; they're what water slides off)
Whales (God mentions them specifically and they also appear in Crowley's drunken ramble)
Gorillas (Mentioned in Crowley's drunken ramble and mentioned again with Banana Fish Gorilla Shoelace With A Dash of Nutmeg)
Fish (Banana Fish Gorilla Shoelace With A Dash of Nutmeg, plus the raining fish during Armageddon and Greasy Johnson's tropical fish in the book)
Rats (Crowley's little minions in the S1 outtakes; creatures Crowley is masquerading as an exterminator of, but with whom he is actually collaborating; this is a cool parallel to humanity even though the final footage wasn't in the main show)
Storks (Shax's animal, as seen on her armor)
Stag (Furfur's animal, as seen on his armor)
Frogs (Hastur's animal)
Lizards (Ligur's animal)
Owls (Referenced in the title of the minisode "A Companion to Owls")
Thanks to @kayleefansposts for adding the storks, stags, frogs, lizards, owls, and flies!
Animals that don't appear plot-relevant on the surface but I may be wrong:
Swans (Seen in the 1862 scene, but not referred to by the characters. Thanks @ao3cassandraic!)
Dolphins (Also mentioned in Crowley's ramble, but don't reappear anywhere, I don't think)
Rabbits (Aziraphale's magic show; also referred to obscurely in the beginning of S2 by Aziraphale saying the humans will "breed like...well, like humans")
Doves (Accidentally killed by Aziraphale, then resurrected in the show by Aziraphale and in the book by Crowley)
Ginger Cat (Dog likes to antagonize in a gentle way)
Ostriches ("Did you teach the ostrich to run, Job?")
The bird that sharpens its beak on the mountain (Crowley's drunken ramble)
Hedgehogs (The one Crowley doesn't manage to hit in the book)
Geese ("Big cross ducks")
Donkeys (The Dirty Donkey, right across from Aziraphale's bookshop)
Aardvarks ("What else would I be, an aardvark?!" Thanks @carbonarak!)

Splendid Saturday
The rain has stopped and it's the sunniest, breeziest, brightest, most flower-filled Saturday morning you could ever want. Peak April!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hero has an extra-bad case of the itchy-miserables. His winter coat has been shedding out for a couple of weeks, now, and no matter how much my daughter and I groom him, the hair (and dander) keep shedding.
Tumblr media
That pile of hair on the ground is just a small sample of his shedding prowess. There is a metal curry comb that seems to feel best to him, and I have spent a ridiculous amount of time the last week trying to find his itchy spots and help him out. If I don't, he sometimes rubs on a tree until he actually injures/scrapes himself, and I hate seeing that. Of course, the whole time I'm trying to work on him, Nutmeg is either trying to squeeze in between us or bonking me with her horns to get my attention. She Wants to be Groomed, Too.
@plantanarchy if you weren't busier than a beaver after a rainstorm, I'd be begging you to come scrape hair off this poor horse!!

Midge’s Masa-Moondrop Curry
So, story time, I saw the FNAF recipe book advertised and was chatting with some people who said they really hoped that the Masa Moondrop Curry would be in there. I thought, why not try my own hand at it?
And then someone told me they thought the Moondrop candies would be blue raspberry flavored, and I had a vision.
Tumblr media
Raspberry Massaman Curry. if you have a sweet tooth good glory this is the curry for you please do not use as much raspberry as I did. That being said, this one’s probably very kid friendly as a result.
If you wanna try your own hand at it, I have the ballpark estimates for the ingredients I used below.
1 lb chicken
1/3rd lb carrots, chopped
1 lb potatoes, chopped (if you can find them, the purple potatoes are hilarious in this. Otherwise, any potato will do)
1 can coconut cream (coconut water will do, but you’ll need yogurt as a thickener if you do. Thai Kitchen, the brand I used, is 13.66 oz per can. Round down in necessary.)
3 tbsp Coconut oil
3 tbsp red thai curry paste (for those who like spice, you could probably double that and be fine. I went light on this on purpose.)
4 green onions, chopped
1 tbsp cumin powder
1 tbsp cinnamon powder
1/2 tbsp ground cardamom
1/2 tbsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp soy sauce
2 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp lemon juice
And the dark horse of this recipe, 1 10 oz jar of raspberry preserves. Get as plain and simple as you can. I used Smuckers Simply Fruit.
Directions
Heat up coconut oil in large pot, and saute the green onions over medium heat. After 2-3 minutes, add the curry paste and half of raspberry preserves and saute an additional minute.
Add in the carrots, potatoes, and chicken, coating thoroughly. Cook for 3 minutes. Stir in coconut cream, rest of raspberry preserves, and all spices except for lemon juice. Simmer, do not boil, until potatoes pierce with fork easily and chicken is done. You probably want to start your rice at the beginning of simmering.
After simmering, add lemon juice and serve on top of rice.
All these ingredients are to taste. You could get away with using half the raspberry and twice the curry as I use. I would actually probably recommend using half the jar if you try this yourself, you can add more raspberry later if you feel you want it sweeter. If you want it a little saltier, add more soy sauce, if you want a richer, warmer taste, more cinnamon and nutmeg. The world is your oyster. I’m quite happy with how this turned out!
And, if you’re like me and definitely think this would be blue in game...
Tumblr media
This is after an unholy amount of food coloring.
