Spin a Black Yarn by Josh Malerman
How long before somebody entering that house understood they were haunted?
Josh Malerman delivers such a fantastic collection of novellas, here, filling Spin a Black Yarn's pages with ideas and characters as dark as they are thematically complex as they are conceptually ambitious.
Half the House is Haunted : Malerman's prose is so effective, here, I didn’t even mind it getting awkward a few times. This story is as creepy as it is sad. Fear is powerful. So is home. They leave their mark. The actual haunting is vague, and all the more effective because of that. But the big payoff - the moment that'll keep you up at night - is the one bit where Stephanie explains the haunting entities near the end. It's a quick paragraph that sent legitimate chills down my spine. Yikes. - 8.5/10
Argyle : A story not only about the unspeakable urges that can live inside even the best of us, the ones we think we know the most, but also the people who carry the burden of those urges with them. It’s told in a way that makes you feel you’re sitting in the room with the characters, and has you reflecting on all the people you’ve come across, however briefly, through your life. It's all very dark and unpredictable stuff, that effortlessly finds the emotional heft within its themes and utilizes them perfectly. That very last exchange between Argyle and Shawn hit me hard... real hard. - 8/10
Doug and Judy Buy the House Washer™ : Whoa! Great character work, dialogue, pacing, tension, concept... everything. I hated these assholes and loved every second of it. This would make a fantastic episode of Cabinet of Curiosities. - 9/10
The Jupiter Drop : Despite its incredible concept, this was probably my least favorite of the bunch (if only because I wanted more). Josh Malerman’s prose made me feel the cabin fever the protagonist was suffering. The visual component to floating through Jupiter helped me get lost in the journey. The idea of his past accident haunting him and the trip magnifying that guilt was nightmarish. And while the ending felt like it lost a bit of its grip on things, it was beautifully haunting in its own way. - 7.5/10
Egorov : Holy Shit! This was fantastic. Expertly paced, dark as hell, and every bit as cold as the city in which it’s set. It explores its themes of loss and madness and coping with grief in a way that feels simultaneously like a piece of classic Russian literature and a fresh, contemporary revenge story. I thoroughly enjoyed this haunting. - 9.5/10
My final score doesn't quite add up, but that makes sense since this collection is more than the sum of its parts. Josh Malerman compiles a collection of stories that work brilliantly on their own, but also as a cohesive, affecting piece about the haunting nature of family, desire, greed, guilt, death and madness.
9/10

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Gonna be honest, I mostly started reading this book because of 'How to Become a Witch Queen' by Theodora Goss. But, I mean, these were short stories, so I had to give other ones of them a try too, and, I wasn’t let down at all.
Of course, that’s not surprising when some of the authors contained in the collection are Kelley Armstrong and Rachel Caine. Of course, ironically, one of other favorite stories from the collection wasn’t by either of those women, but, instead, The Night Nurse by Sarah Langan. It was intense, and so so so so dark. Sooo dark (but awesome dark, not, ‘this sucks’ dark).
The whole collection was well done, and the stories within it really had something for every different type of reader. A quality choice of stories!

REVIEW
A Duke in Winter
A Historical Romance Collection
Ten novella length historical romances by ten authors gives the reader the chance to read authors already or yet to be read for the first time. With half of the stories read so far, I eagerly look forward to reading the rest after I post this review.
As with any collection of stories, some will appeal more than others and yet at least one or more will no doubt be just what you needed to read in that moment that you sit down to do so. You can see how others live, what motivates them, how your life differs from theirs, try on a character or two to see if any are ones you could play the part of, and perhaps meet an author that will see you looking for their work again.
Emily Royal’s THE TAMING OF THE DUKE has a side bet instigated that sees a fake courting become real but not without a bit of drama. A spinster will meet her match and so will the duke that begins a fake courtship with her.
Anna St. Claire’s’ ONCE UPON A WINTER’S TALE is a bit darker tale of a love left behind with fear the motivating force but driven also by the desire of one man for an heir.
Sandra Sookoo’s MUCH ADO ABOUT A STORME sees the matriarch of the Storme family, now widowed, finding a second chance at love.
Elizabeth Keysian’s THE TEMPESTUOUS DUKE is almost Gothic in feel with a young woman washed ashore after a capsizing faced with two brothers that are at odds with one another due to what happened in the past. A Talking parrot, wonderful canine, and a mystery to solve are only part of the story.
Caroline Warfield’s THE SIXTH HENRY might have been my favorite with a bit of a Capulet’s and Montagues feuding families feel to it but…this couple lands in a better situation than poor Romeo and Juliet. This story made me think about how difficult it would be to step into the shoes of a Duke without having training to do so.
Did I enjoy the stories I read – yes
Will I read the authors again in the future – yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 4 – 5 stars

Super interested in how you plan to write Leopardfoot! I feel like both fanon and canon tend to make her into a sweet mom(tm) who’s super sad that Tigerstar is evil, very similar to how Goldenflower is usually treated. What’s her thoughts on Pinestar and him leaving? How did she influence Tigerstar? What are her political beliefs?
Society has progressed past the need for sad moms who stare tearily at their evil sons and boohoo about all the murder. It's MOTHER AGENCY TIME
BB!Leopardfoot was FEROCIOUS. Her father was the indominable Adderfang, and he taught her about the importance of honor and glory. When Tigerpaw was given to Thistleclaw as an apprentice, she was proud of it. It felt perfect to her-- that her father's apprentice was now her son's mentor.
For his brief rule, she supported Sunstar completely. It helped that he came after the disastrous and embarassing exit of Pinestar, which ruined the legacy that she wanted him to give her son. Pinestar was a damn coward and a codebreaker... and she assured Tigerkit that he was more HER son than his.
She even gives him a life, for Legacy, in defiance of StarClan
She was friends with Bluemoon for a time, but after ascending to StarClan, she learned about the Forget-me-nots.
This changed her opinion of her. Leopardfoot supports Thistle Law, STRONGLY so.
She supported THISTLECLAW when he tried to forcefully void the Queen’s Rights. If Bluemoon hadn't broken the code, then what did she have to hide?
She backed off when Thrushpelt leapt to her defense though, "She didn't reveal it because she doesn't love me are you happy now??"
Leopardfoot: *awkwardly turns away feeling like an asshole now, tea SPILLED, her friend's dirty laundry EXPOSED, thought she was crusading for the law but she just dug up drama*
Towards the end of Pinestar’s reign, he was getting exhausted. He wanted peace. Leopardfoot wanted kittens around that time, and figured that there was no better cat than the son of Oakstar, architect of the infamous Crusade Era.
If Pinestar had no children, a glorious bloodline would have died out. She wanted it for her kits. Pinestar agreed on the condition that he would be their Mi, which she happily accepted.
So when Pinestar left, she jumped into the nursery to take over and had to explain to her kits where their Mi went.
She drove it home to them that he abandoned everything, because his weakness took over. They would never be like him, she promised.
Mistkit died very young. Nightpaw made it to apprenticeship before she also succumbed. Tigerclaw remembers very well how hard it was to lose his sisters.
Leopardfoot herself was taken shortly before TPB, in Spottedleaf's Plague. Her death causes Tigerclaw to have a bit of a moment.
After the trial in Bluestar's Flowers, Leopardfoot leaves StarClan along with a bunch of other Thistle Law supporters, including Thistleclaw himself. She joins the BOTTE at the end of OotS, fighting to the end with her son.
She misses him a lot, and remains in the Dark Forest to the current arc. She chose her path; and has the dignity to walk it.
She does miss StarClan sometimes though, and will tell you stories about it if you ask.
In terms of demon friends, she's somewhere in the clique between the harsher and softer spirits.
She dislikes Morningstar, Cloudberry, and Ryewhisker on the softer end, and has come to resent Thistleclaw and Finchflight on the other, but likes Darkstripe, Leopardstar, and Silverhawk.
Gets along with a range of "mid" level demons.
In particular I imagine she hangs out with Darkstripe a lot. Taste test buddy, he asks her to try his experimental recipes because she's honest but not mean. One of the few Thistle Law supporting cats he hangs out with after the double-death of Tigerstar.
He calls her Lefty. Her official nickname is "Left" but he calls her Lefty.
(Clanmew: her name is Saorpwyyar. Others call her Saopr. He calls her Sapyy.)
Her mom and dad Swiftbreeze and Adderfang are here too, following Thistleclaw like she did, but she's been minimizing her contact with her dad. She feels like she is owed an apology somehow but also doesn't have the emotional intelligence to know that it's what she wants.
She just knows that she feels really bitter talking to him, and that's unpleasant.
She used to be VITRIOLIC with Pinestar, who is also here, even going after him physically when he chose to join in with the Dark Forest trainees. But now... honestly so much shit has happened, she just doesn't like seeing him. She wishes he wasn't here.
I write her being very dignified. She doesn't like to admit publically she was ever wrong and speaks with confidence, quietly backing off and not wanting to speak about her mistakes. She loves her children and her family, but explores the world in a very "self-centric" way, trusting her feelings and personal judgement over anything logical.
A reactionary sort of person, if that makes sense.
Her Land Mar has to develop over time because she is an ex-StarClan migrant (damned souls get theirs instantly after judgement), but it's called the Fence Cliff. It's a picket fence that blocks off a sheer drop, making a sharp turn down the cliff face and acting as a walkway. Follow the fence down the slope, and you can access the Dark Forest's town biome.

SUBMISSIONS ARE OPENING AGAN!
Hello everybody, it's that time once again! Send in short stories, novellas, and short story collections and we will see whether tumblr has read them!
Going over some general rules again first:
Submissions will stay open until Tuesday. Once it's Tuesday, I will close it. I may close early if I get an influx of submissions. I also might extend submissions if I want more.
Make sure to go through the list of all stories that have already been submitted and posted. I know it's long, but feel free to use the "Find" tool to see if what you want to submit is already on there.
Limit yourself to only submitting about five pieces in each category. If I extend submissions to be longer than originally intended, feel free to submit a few more, but otherwise try not to do more. Be courteous to others who want to submit things.
Feel free to submit things that are well known classics + lesser known pieces!
Do not submit full-length novels, even if they're shorter. This is for short stories, novellas (under 40K words), or short story collections. Please consider going to @haveyoureadthisbook-poll @haveyoureadthismgyabook or @haveyoureadthisfantasybook or @haveyoureadthisqueerbook, among other poll blogs (those are just the ones I follow so I know about them)
Do not submit plays or poems. We have had some problems with people submitting plays before, and like, I love plays! But that's not the focus of this blog. We're focusing on prose here. Even if it's a book of poetry or a verse poetry book, do not submit them. Please consider going to @haveyoureadthispoem-poll and @do-you-know-this-play
Consider submitting with a link to the piece you are submitting. Of course, if you don't have one/can't find one, that's perfectly alright. But if it's an older piece that is in the public domain/easily Googlable OR is a piece originally published online/in a publicly accessible literary magazine, others would love to read it as well :)
If you have any questions, the ask box is always open <3 Even if you just want to share some thoughts about your pieces, feel free to drop by in the ask box !!!
SUBMISSIONS LINK!
Thank you everyone :) Consider reblogging this post if you submit something, boosting its visibility, and helping more people see and submit things!
