Regulus Black is probably the most beautiful person James has ever had the pleasure to know and he has decided that he is going to marry that man if it’s the last thing he ever does on this planet.
Only one problem there: Regulus absolutely despises James. Like, the type of hatred that you can feel blistering on your skin. The type of hatred that feels like a wordless threat that James can feel in the very depths of his soul.
Those eyes, made of crystal and ice and swirling silver storm cut through him like a keen blade and he feels himself bleeding out in front of him whenever they meet his own.
And oh how he bleeds for Regulus…
James would give him every last drop of red within his body if he so pleased. If only it would get him a single smile; just an upward quirk of his lips. And that would be enough.
Regulus doesn’t hate James. He wants to. He really, truly does. But he's come to the conclusion that not a soul alive could ever truly hate James Fleamont Potter. He just makes it impossible by being… well, himself.
But he tries.
Desperately, Regulus tries to cling to any amount of annoyance and dislike and malice he may feel towards him but James simply accepts it all with open arms.
He takes in his cruel words like they’re a gift. He meets Regulus’ cold gaze and smiles warmly enough to melt it at the source. James is fire and hearth; warmth and safety. He is a gentle hand on the shoulder and a cup of tea on a cold mercury morning.
James is color and light and all things good in the world and Regulus craves him.
He hates how desperately he wants him. How fiercely he yearns to allow himself to reach out and touch him; cold fingers stretching towards the last sliver of heat and light as the sun sets below the horizon, drowned out by darkness and night and a scattering of silver stars.

okay I was asked about fey books I’ve read that Do stick to folklore a bit more than certain popular books - and actually looking at what fey books I’ve read it’s a bit like.... books that stick to folklore closely I sometimes Don’t Love, and there are others that don’t stick to it as much but I like the overall narrative more? or some mix of that.
so here’s a list of a few - a range of how much they stick to folklore (which of course is an amorphous thing) and how much I like them, but it’s something!
YA
That Self-Same Metal - literally just read this, it’s about a Black girl who’s the stage blade expert for shakespeare’s company and can see fey, and they’re appearing more and more in the city. explores a bit of the midsummer night’s dream fey but also like “shakespeare was wrong” and general folklore. definitely the start of a series and has a lot going on but I thought it has some cool ideas!
all Holly Black’s books deal with them well! the Modern Faerie Tales companion/trilogy has maybe aged a bit by now, and I hate way the romance ended up together in The Folk of the Air (and the way the fandom is about it) but otherwise I do really like how it deals with fey and politics! also enjoyed The Darkest Part of the Forest. these are all intertwined/same world
The Buried And The Bound - a hedgewitch girl keeps fey away from her town, and gets caught up with two boys who are cursed. mostly deals with minor fey and a powerful hag
An Enchantment of Ravens - it’s been quite a few years since I read this, but I do remember enjoying it. It is a bit more of a romance focused story also, an artist stolen into the fey realm for painting a fey prince as if he was human(iirc?)
The Bone Houses - not directly dealing with fey, but like the aftermath of the ancient fey’s curses? welsh myth inspired. which I think is cool.
At The Edge of The Woods - about a girl in a religious/patriarchial village who starts to have strange dreams about a fey boy luring her into the woods. it’s not super focused on them, but they’re very much the classic ‘dangerous fey stealing people away for entertainment’ kind of thing
Adult
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries - I sort of have mixed feelings about this - I really enjoy how it dealt with fey and the creepier folklore creatures side of it! the handling of the changeling was a bit iffy and not sure about the romance
The Wolf Among the Wild Hunt - dark fantasy novella about a wolf-shifter made to join the wild hunt to save his qpr. focused on the unseelie/wild hunt area
Silver in the Wood - gaslamp fantasy novella about the keeper of a magical forest, dryads and dangerous fey
The Wind City - a bit of a mashup of fey folklore and Māori atua in a modern NZ setting
Sinners/Veiled - very classic but also with the element of a modern setting where human pollution is like a drug to fey (and the MC is a drug lord.) (so kind of dark but also not dark in the sexy way bc the MC is aroace)
Under The Pendulum Sun - this is a gothic fantasy that has a bit of a new take on a fey world, but also definitely has some of those creepy folklore vibes.
Siren Queen - this only partly involves fey but I thought the way that it mashed up old hollywood and fey (aka shady deals for fame themes) was interesting!
Sorcerer to the Crown/The True Queen - my memory on this is hazy, but I believe it’s regency fantasy, with its own take on a fey world/magic (moreso the 2nd book)
Malice/Misrule - adult high fantasy lesbian sleeping beauty reimagining, this is kind of doing it’s own thing I guess (I don’t remember if they’re even called fey?) but definitely has a bit of the creepy creature/court vibes in book 2 especially
In The Jaded Grove - I was just looking up books to see if there was anything I missed and found this, which seems interesting to me!
I also haven’t read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (but I watched the show ages ago) and I believe that has the vibe too

Gael: I hope this is better than the last-…
Brynn: This is not smelly gas station sushi from dirty city, Berty.
Gael: [laughs] True. What should we get?
[Gael neatly slots his menu from whence it came, wiping his fingers on his shirt as he awaits Brynn’s answer]
Gael: Brynn?
Brynn: Uhm…
…
[Wyatt came to an abrupt halt; though unlikely, he figured bumping into someone from the past was inevitable. He wasn’t comfortable with the idea, but at least it was someone on his side, sort of-.. he hoped. She definitely shouldn’t have been, not given-…]
Waitress: Hellooooo, Kaito?
Wyatt: Hm?
Waitress: Table five.
…
Wyatt: What can I get for you?
Gael: Oh, thank god.. I thought I was gonna end up having to butcher Komorebian.
Wyatt: Not today.
Brynn: You look so much like someone I once know…
Wyatt: You’re a long way from home; coincidental, I’m sure.
Brynn: He kept his word.
Wyatt: He did.
Gael: Wha-…
Wyatt: I’m sure he’s still very grateful for all your help-.. and your burnt phone.
Brynn: Did he find his soul?
Wyatt: I think he’s getting there.
[Gael’s gaze flicks between Brynn and the enigmatic waiter, thoroughly confused]
Gael: Sorry, do you two know each other?
[Brynn snaps back to reality, shaking her head]
Brynn: Of course not!
Wyatt: I tend to humour tourists…
Gael: Well, can you humour me with a recommendation? ‘Cause I don’t know where to start.
Brynn: [laughs] We have the nigiri sharing platter, please.
…
[Gael signals to a nearby waitress that they’ve finished, leaving a generous tip beneath the bill that swiftly arrives. He tugs Brynn along with him excitedly, gibbering all the while; though she’s not listening]
[She finally spots what-.. or who she was looking for. Locking eyes with Wyatt, she slides her fingers across her lips in a zipping motion. His secret is safe with her]
[Wyatt wasn’t sure why he trusted Brynn so readily, but he did; and for the second time whilst in her company, he felt a wave of gratitude wash over him]

WIP Wednesday
Dear Nancy,
Whoever said it never rains in southern California is a fucking liar.
After four days straight, Jonathan’s starting to think that it’s never going to stop raining. He’s supposed to be paying attention to a lecture about coastal wetlands but he’s staring out the window. He’s somehow stuck taking Earth Science again. When he planned his senior year last May, he picked Physics 2. He had sandwiched it right between U.S. Government and Lunch A. Nancy was adamant that they needed to take Lunch A in order to have their Independent Study period after so they could work on The Weekly Streak. But Lenora High doesn’t have Physics 2. They don’t have Independent Study. And they certainly don’t have Nancy.
So, here he sits bored out of his mind in ninth grade Earth Science, because it’s a requirement to graduate. And Lenora High doesn’t care about his transcripts which he thinks is bullshit but it’s not worth arguing over anymore. This is his lot in life, he’s forced to sit in a classroom full of fifteen year olds sandwiched between Will and El. Jane, she’s Jane now, his step-sister. Not that he deserves to be called a brother lately.
Will clears his throat, turns around and passes him a worksheet. Jonathan in turn silently passes one to Jane and then gets to work. The only halfway decent part about taking a class he took in eighth grade is that he knows all the answers already. Five minutes later, he’s staring out the window again with The Smiths stuck in his head, wondering what Nancy had for lunch and if it’s raining in Hawkins too without having to worry about failing.
It’s early December so it’s more likely that it’s snowing in Hawkins. Jonathan misses the snow, he misses making elaborate snowmen with Will, he misses not having to go to school and above all he misses Nancy crawling into his bed and cuddling together for warmth. He tries not to think about how cold she must be without him there. Maybe he can send one of his sweaters to her. It’s not like he’s getting much use out of them. Jonathan’s mind betrays him with visions of Nancy in his sweater and little else. Just as he’s attempting to drown out imaginary Nancy’s begging with the water cycle, something hits him in the back of the head breaking his concentration.
Jonathan cautiously leans over to pick up the neatly folded triangle. He waits until the teacher's back is turned to open it. Someone has invited him to a party. He fights the urge to laugh. According to the invite, some girl named Daisy is celebrating her Sweet Sixteen. He glances around the class trying to find a face to the name. But, he’s almost positive that there’s no named Daisy in here. However, there is the tall blonde girl named Amy or maybe Annie staring at him and blushing furiously.
He slouches in his seat, folds the note and slips it into his binder without a fuss. Hoping that if he just ignores it it’ll go away. He refocuses on the rain hitting the window and tries to brainstorm how to get out of this mess while Imaginary Nancy rages at poor Amy-Annie. Like the kid even has a chance. He should just tell her that he's taken. That he's got a girl he's madly in love with. That they're going off to college together. That when he dies he wants to be reincarnated just to fall in love with her again.

Happy Whumpmas (੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭*🎅⛄❄️!!! You have just been snowballed by a secret whumper. Help to keep the snowball fight going by anonymously sending this to five other whumpers with a whump-related question of your choice.
Here's mine for you: what are your favorite and least favorite whump scenarios?
Hmm...that's hard to decide, cuz it depends on how specific of a scenario we're talking. If it's very general, captivity is my favorite. More specifically, I prefer lab whump scenarios or ones where the whumpee is being hurt for the sake of it. If it had to be, like, a scene, I would say intimate female whumper vivisecting a defiant guy who's strapped to a table and struggling cuz,,,,,yeah,,,,,
Least favorite is probably any scenario where the whumpee is conditioned to like whatever's going on or like wants to please the whumper or something cuz i want the whumpee to be very visibly not having a good time it takes the enjoyment out of it for me if they're into it somehow
