On A Night Like Tonight

Summary: It’s your 3 year anniversary and Niall has big plans for the night.

“Niall! Where are you taking me?!”

I groan and slow my footsteps, the only thing guiding me was the feeling of the grass on my feet. He walk for a few more yards and he finally stops.

“Yes! Please! I want this thing off!”

He laughs and removes my blindfold, and I let out a gasp. In front of me lies a large blanket with a picnic basket, my favorite foods lying all over the blanket. I turn to Niall, tears threatening to spill.

“W-What’s this for..?”

He smiles and pecks my lips softly.

“Happy anniversary Petal…”

I smile and hug him tight, Niall wrapping his arms around my waist in return.

“You so over did it! You didn’t have to do all this!”

He laughs and shakes my head, saying nothing more as he drags me down the field and to the blanket he had set up. We sit down and he pours me a glass of champagne and hands it to me before pouring his own.

We start to eat and talk and after awhile, it grows dark and the stars become clear. We lay down and cuddle up, watching the stars in the sky when all of a sudden, there’s a loud boom of a firework. My whole body jumps and Niall laughs.

“What the actual-.”

“Calm down, Petal! It’s all good! Just keep watching.”

I roll my eyes and lay back down, now watching the fireworks, a small smile on my face. That is until I realize that the fireworks are spelling out something.

“Will.. You.. Marry.. Me… Niall- are you serious?!”

When I turn to him, he’s sitting up, a ring box in his hand. I sit up, tears threatening to spill from my eyes.

“Marry me Y/N… I love you. I have for a long time and I’ll continue to love you. I don’t want another day without you. I want kids, I want everything. With you…”

I start to cry, no doubt ruining my mascara as I wrap my arms around him tightly.

“Yes you idiot! Of course I will!”

He laughs and hugs me tight. We pull away after a minute and he slips the cold ring on my finger before placing a soft kiss on my lips. He pulls away and we lay back down, the fireworks in the sky now flashing even brighter. We cuddle up and he holds me close, and I know, it won’t be the last.

“Nice nails” Zane compliments Harry who’s sitting in the seat opposite.

“Thanks” Harry politely replies as he glances down at his turquoise nails sitting on his lap. “Thanks for having me”.

After discussing Pleasing and he loved the idea of It, Zane asked “What made you want to do that?”.

“I think for me like…a big part of it is…like I really like making stuff and I really like..kind of coming up with ideas and collaborating with other…especially YN who again is very creative…I feel like I’m really lucky with people around me both personally and professionally that I get to work with are really fun to work with and…you know working’s like my favourite thing to do so..based on the fact that I think obviously it begins as a hobby so then like getting to make stuff for work I feel like is a real gift. I think if I didn’t think about it too much I would be making music and putting out music constantly…but I’m also aware that I’m a total control freak and I want everything to be perfect..so the idea of like oh I made these four songs I’m just going to put out an EP…It’s just not how I think of it”.

“You're faced with a time when you can’t do that…and the great leveller of like it doesn’t matter how much money you have, doesn’t matter where you live, doesn’t matter this doesn’t matter that…you can’t travel you can’t do this, you can’t go outside your house..It’s like suddenly you’re forced to not be this musician guy, you’re forced to be like a boyfriend, brother and a son…and all of those things..and actually I feel like I..you know kind of had a little bit of a chance to focus on that at least for a moment..umm and just stop and kind of take in a lot of stuff and…remember things, you’re kind of gifted this stolen time” Harry explained his view on the world pandemic.

“You mentioned being all these roles…you mentioned being a boyfriend, what was it like during these times?” Zane quizzed. “Because I imagine you got a taste of what it’s like being a “normal” couple”.

Twisting and playing with his rings on his fingers, Harry explains “Umm…YN has always been my comfort you know and I’d like to think I’m hers too…she’s been a big part of my life and…we’ve been through so much tougher…that it was kind of nice to just stop and take that in.” Zane nodded, an indication for Harry to continue “So when the pandemic hit..we isolated in LA for a while..I saw it as a time for us to be just us…but YN did find it hard because she has such a big family…and umm she just wanted to be closer to them…especially her grandparents and siblings”.

“Yeah I can imagine that being hard..being so far away” Zane sympathised “I don’t mean to pry into your personal life but what do you mean by time for just you two?”

“Like..we’ve never known anything other than travelling..or just being surrounded by other people and just having to plan everything in so much detail..to like not be seen you know…so we kind of got to see what a normal like would be like, whatever a normal life is..if that makes sense?”.

“Yeah it makes total sense”. Zane agreed and could see that Harry craved a little normality in his personal life.

“I suppose..I’m just like really lucky..because YN just gets it. She got put into the limelight the same as us..you know..so yeah she just gets it and I’m just so lucky” Harry continued with a slight giggle as he repeated how lucky he was. “I think what I’m trying to say is…I hit gold when it came to YN…she really is my best friend too and yeah…it was nice to be just a couple without the added pressures.”.

“We have to acknowledge this because..you know we at one point we were going to this in the United Kingdom”. Harry nodded in agreement “But there’s something wonderful about being in this afterglow of Palm Springs..which is I'm sure is how you feel a little bit after these two amazing headline shows…you seem so chilled you know” Zane laughed but continue “There must have been a relief that you did it?”.

“I just..you know I knew I was going to put something out…whether it’s a show or an album or a song I want it to be perfect..and umm…I think like that’s why I take so much stress on I think around something like Coachella..cause I feel like I want it to be good..like if it’s not going to be good I’d rather not do it..so you know in that kind of setting, no matter what it is kind of…you know the dust or the wind or however many things, it's like so many things can go wrong in that situation..and it's not your show and it's my first festival so…you know I’m kind of going out to the crowd and I like knowing what I’m stepping out to” Harry rambled with a nervous chuckle at the end.

Harry continued “and that was really terrifying”.

“What was your instinct when they asked you to do it?” Zane interrupted.

“That’s too scary and I’m gonna say no” Harry laughed “But..uh YN was like you need to say yes and was just so encouraging and supportive..you know…plus she’s like my biggest fan so of course she wanted me to do it!”.

“So..would you say YN helps with the nerves?” Zane asked curiously.

“I was so nervous..like so nervous..and I remember YN being on facetime to Louis before the show..and them both saying just to be myself and to enjoy…and when I was out there I just focused on being me and nothing else”. Harry spoke freely. “Their advice definitely helped…’cause I had the best time!”.

“Late Night Talking?” Zane stated.

Harry let out a shy chuckle “Uhh…yeah” Harry leans his head on his hand to try and hide is cheeky smile “It’s about YN…well I don’t think it’s a shock to anyone”.

“So…would you say the whole album is about YN?” Zane asked confidently.

“Uhh..most of it..yeah pretty much” Harry smiled “She’s just been a constant in my life..since like we were what..sixteen or seventeen..you know..she’s my life..and I don’t have to pretend to be anyone other than myself around her you know…it’s just easy and I love that about our relationship.” Harry explained.

“Matilda really shows emotional intelligence and how you were thinking about someone at that time.”. Zane begins to talk about the middle song on Harry’s album.

“Uh…yeah…I actually didn’t write Matilda”. Harry revealed, causing Zane to looked shocked. “YN had this conversation with someone…and she was getting to know them…and they opened up to her and she was like that’s not normal…so she was almost like writing down what she wanted to say to them…and I was like how many people could relate to this you know…and we agreed that it would make a beautiful song for those who needed to hear it”.

“Waw! It holds a real powerful message and I think even if people don’t feel those things…I think it definitely makes them feel something.”. Zane spoke with passion in his voice.

“It definitely does….and it was just about saying I was listening….that was YN’s purpose to it”.

“Boyfriends” Zane began “It is a great song..It’s from a male perspective, it’s a very knowing song..and It’s a very self-aware song..you have to have some self-awareness to write from that perspective surely”.

Harry answered immediately “Yeah for sure…Boyfriends was written right at the end of Fine Line” Harry explained “Boyfriends is about like…we’re all flawed you know..and I think pretending like we’re not, I just don’t get it..It’s acknowledging my own behaviour, it’s looking at the behaviour I’ve witnessed..I grew up with a sister so it’s like watching her date people and watching friends…but at the same time admitting I’ve not been a perfect boyfriend either”.

“Love of My Life..I’d always wanted to write a song about like home and loving England…and all of that kind of stuff..and it’s kind of hard to do that you know”

“So Love of Love My Life is about home and England?” Zane asked with a slight smirk on his face.

“As I started making them album…I realised it wasn’t about the kind of geographical location…it was more of an internal thing” Harry tried to hide his bashful smile by rubbing his finger under his nose.

“Do I see Harry Styles blushing?” Zane began to tease Harry.

Harry lets out a loud chuckle and tries to hide his face in his hands “You know..I’ll admit that I blush sometimes…especially when it comes to YN!”.

Things have been a bit crazy for us lately. I’m officially unpacked and living with Niall has been a dream- well, when he’s home. With his birthday coming up, I have planned a small party as to not overwhelm him with how busy he’s been.

But lately, it’s been difficult doing much, especially when it involves food. I know what’s going on… I’m just hoping Niall will be happy.

Niall walks throw the door, leaving his suitcase at the door as he struts over to me and picks me up, twirling me me around as he hugs me tight.

“I know. But it’ll be fine! Now shoo! I’ve got to finish some last minute stuff for your party and I think you need some sleep. I’ll make you some lunch in a bit and bring it upstairs. Leave your bags down here. I’ll wash your clothes and you can put the rest away later.”

He sighs and lifts his head up, pecking my forehead before trudging his way up the stairs. I start the laundry and then start on his lunch when Harry comes in through the front door, carrying a box. I turn down the heat on the stove and rush over to help him.

“Did you get everything?”

He puts the box down and nods.

“Everything you ordered. Decorations, plates and all that. Balloons were ordered and I’ll pick ‘em up tomorrow.”

I smile and nod.

“Thanks Harry, I really appreciate this. I’ll get the balloons though. Why don’t you join Niall and Lewis tomorrow morning? Niall wants to teach him to golf. I’m sure it’ll be comedic.”

“Are you sure? That’s an awful lot to do on your own. I know it’s a small party but still- at least call one of your friends to help if not myself.”

“I got it! I’ve planned many a party in my day. My old roommates are coming and they’re helping set up, but everyone else is out of town. They sent presents though. Which I still have to wrap. But it’ll be fine!”

He sighs and nods. He gives me a side hug, patting my head before leaving.

September 13th, 2023🎈

Niall was out the door early with a small peck to my lips, leaving me with plenty of time to prepare.

I put on some music and get to work, cleaning the house and decorating. Zach, Aleks and Jenny arrived at about 10, with the party at 3 and we all got down to work. By the time we finished, cake and food set, my mom and Pedro had arrived, Kelly following behind them.

Kelly gives me a big smile and a hug as she comes through the door.

“Girly! Look at you! Damn! And everything looks great! Niall is gonna love it.”

I give her an anxious smile and bite my lip.

“I hope so. He should be here in just a minute. Oh shit- the presents! I forgot to wrap them!”

I give her a small hug and with Jenny behind me, I race up the stairs to wrap all his presents, including his special present. By the time I come back down, Niall is standing in the den with Harry and Lewis by his side. He sees me from across the room and gives me his signature smile that always gives me butterflies.

“There’s m’ girl! Come gimmie a kiss!”

I laugh and make my way over to him, hugging him and pecking his lips, noting the obvious smell of alcohol on him, Guinness as per usual.

“Well it seems like you had fun. Let’s get you some water. I think all three of you could use it.”

He chuckles and keeps an arm wrapped around my waist as we make our way to the kitchen. Once Niall, Harry and Lewis have some water in their system, we start the festivities.

“Alright birthday boy. Make a wish.”

“Petal, I’m 30. I’m not a boy… I’m a man.”

I snort and shake my head before pecking his cheek.

“Oh, a very manly man. Now blow out your candles before wax melts all over the pretty cake I made you.”

He laughs and nods and takes a deep breath, ready to blow out his candles. Before he can, we hear a sniffle to the right of us. I turn my head and see Harry, tears streaming down his cheeks.

“Harry… are you crying?”

“It’s not fair! Why do we have to turn 30?! First Niall… and I’m next! ‘Ts not fair, Em!”

We all laugh and I shake my head. I walk over to him and give him a side hug.

“It’s okay, Harry. Just the way the world works.”

"But the universe and I had a deal.."

He pouts and I can’t help but snort. Aleks lays a hand on his shoulder, attempting to hold back his laughter.

“Harry, what are you complaining for, dude? You're at the freaking peak of your career!"

Harry frown and shakes his head.

“It’s all up hill until someone trips and falls flat on their face…”

I sigh and give him another hug, patting his back.

“Okay… I think you had a bit too much to drink. How about we get these candles blown out so you can have some of that cake? Sober you up? It’s sugar free…”

He chuckles and nods. Niall blows out his candles and squeezes my hand with a small smile. I serve up some cake and ice cream and I finally sit down next to Niall, who pecks my cheek.

“Thanks for this, Petal. You really didn’t have to…”

I peck his lips and smile.

“I know I didn’t. I wanted to. You made mine the most memorable I’ve ever had… I wanted to do something for you. I know you weren’t especially excited about this one… But I’m so, so happy you decided to celebrate. I want to celebrate you. I’m thankful for you, Ni. Everyday with you. Happy birthday, babe.”

He smiles and plants a passionate kiss to my lips. We all talk and laugh as we eat, until it’s time for presents. Niall laughs as he opens each present slowly, until he gets to the last present. He opens the box and he’s quiet for a minute before he looks at me.

“Em… You’re serious? Y-You’re—.”

I remain silent, only nodding as I nervously wait for his reaction. He stands up and takes me, hugging me tight. I sigh in relief, hugging him back, letting the tears fall down my cheeks. He pulls away slightly and kisses me, tears slowly falling down his cheeks as mine continue to fall.

He pulls away and wipes his tears, before turning to everyone who stand there with confused expressions. Niall takes my hand, a smile on his face.

“We’re pregnant!”

Gasps and claps echo through the room, my mom bursting into tears. Niall hugs me tight and smiles as he caresses my cheek.

“Not that I’m not happy Em, I promise I am… but how? You’re on the shot, right?”

I sit down and Niall takes a seat next to me.

“I was. But I noticed I wasn’t feeling well and I was late. So… I went just in case. Apparently… the batch I got a couple months ago was part of a batch that wasn’t fully developed. So it didn’t work all the way. And well… now we’re here. I know we’ve only talked a few times and neither of us wanted kids this soon-.”

He pecks my lips to silence me before he shakes his head.

“It’s perfect. I promise. No matter what… Our baby will be so loved… And honestly… I’ve never loved you more…”

I tear up, cuddling into his side as he holds me close. He rests a hand on my stomach, rubbing it as we sit quietly in our bliss, awaiting the times ahead.
