New Millipede!!! Sphaerobelum turcosa is a newly discovers species of pill millipede that was recently discovered in the Loei province of Thailand. A team of researchers were doing field work in the Phu Pha Lom Forest when they discovered fourteen of these brightly colored millipedes. Due to their stunning coloration these pill millipedes were nicknamed “The Jewel of The Forest”.
Tumblr media
Pill millipedes have convergently evolved a body structure similar to that of isopods (aka roly polies) and have comparatively shorter bodies than other species of millipedes, and like roly polies they will roll themselves into a ball when they feel threatened.
Tumblr media
The bright turquoise color of Sphaerobelum turcosa helps warn predators that they are poisonous and not to eat them. This millipede also has tan markings on its exoskeleton that form a mask-like marking that helps to scare off potential predators.

okay okay okay so i haven't been tism about this yet (publicly) but like i really need people to hear about this
for ages scientists have been trying to drill into the mantle with things like the kola super-deep bore hole and just a few days ago... they still haven't.
BUT THEY DID HARVEST ROCK FROM IT AND THIS IS WHERE IT GETS COOL!
Geologists managed to extract a kilometer long core sample of mantle rock through the Atlantis Massif and a "tectonic window" which basically means mantle rock was pushed up into the crust by tectonic shifting and got close enough to the surface seafloor that they were able to use a bore drill to harvest samples
now the reason that this is a major breakthrough for geology (and i would use all caps but i don't want to scare some of my mutuals away from this) is that this KILOMETER long sample could potentially change a lot of the things we know about plate tectonics, magma convection currents, earthquakes (falls under plate tectonics but important enough to get it's own mention), and geology in general.
What they find from analyzing the sample might change what you learn in school and that is any scientists DREAM
I am actually shaking bc of how exciting this is and i need everyone around me to be doing the same

BOOM! WIZARD BLAST!! NOW YOU ARE SUBJECTED TO MY LONG ESSAY ABOUT COOL STUFF!!!
Cw: marine life that could possibly be unnerving (uncanny?)
OKAY SO RECENTLY A NEW SPECIES OF FEATHER STAR HAS BEEN FOUND!
This is what we knew them to look like before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’ve got many arms that resemble feathers! They use them to swim. They’re a type of crinoid, of class Crinoidea. When they’re young they’re attached to stems at the bottom of the sea.
Tumblr media
They detach from they’re stalk and turn into the floating beauties.
Recently, a new species was found in Antarctica! It’s called The Arctic Strawberry Feather Star (Promachocrinus fragarius).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s got about 20 arms. Unlike most Feather Stars, it’s got a combination of bumpy and feathery arms. From what I know they only get about 8in (~20cm).
I’m not a professional or anything. Just a goofy lass who goes crazy over random things.

Over 160 deep-sea animal specimens collected from the December expedition will be archived at the Museum of Zoology at the University of Costa Rica, adding to the 150 specimens collected in June. This marks one of the first times that all biological specimens will be housed within the Latin American country from which they were acquired following a deep-sea expedition, rather than being sent to the United States or Europe.

World's First Images of Newborn White Shark?
The Malibu Artist recorded this last July. ICYMI (tbh I didn’t hear about this until a couple weeks ago). They’re not 100% sure that it is a neonate (just born) but there is strong evidence.

Saw earlier that a new species of lagerpetid was published (Venetoraptor gassenae) and I decided to do a very basic reconstruction of its currently known shape. This design is based on the Northern harrier since it’s description includes a similar beak!

Look what I found on Instagram! The first dog-fox hybrid! It looks so cool, it's amazing how something like this can happen in nature and not forced by man kind; just like liger's(lion-tiger hybrid) and Zonkeys(zebra-donkey hybrid) for example!

Great news for monotreme lovers!!!

The Sir David Attenborough's Long-Beaked Echidna (Zaglossus attenboroughi) has been sighted for the first time since 1961!
Also known as the Cyclops Long-Beaked Echidna, this nocturnal critter was first described by Western scientists in 1961 during the Dutch colonial era of what was then known as Dutch New Guinea. It was only described from a fragmentary preserved specimen (pictured below) and was of course named after the famous naturalist Sir David Attenborough. However, I do want to point out that, as is the case with many newly discovered species, it was known to the native people of this region way before this and was traditionally hunted for both food and for ceremonial peace offerings. However, according to my research since the species was classified as Critically Endangered, the native villagers were very enthusiastic about its conservation and agreed not to hunt them in order to help preserve the species.
Tumblr media
Z. attenboroughi is native to the Cyclops Mountain Chain in northern Indonesian New Guinea and feeds mostly on worms, ants, termites, and other invertebrates by using their long beaks to forage through the soil and creating distinct “nose pokes”. For a long time, these “nose pokes” were the only sign scientists had that this species hadn’t gone extinct. The last unconfirmed sighting by locals was in 2005, though some tracks and burrows that were thought to belong to the species were discovered in 2007.
Now, over 60 years after it was initially described, an expedition of scientists from Oxford University to the Cyclops Mountains has resulted in this elusive monotreme being videotaped by a game trail camera.

Attenborough’s Long-Beaked Echidna might somewhat resemble hedgehogs in appearance and behavior, however, they are one of only five species of egg-laying mammals known as monotremes! The other four species are the Short-Beaked Echidna, Western Long-Beaked Echidna, Eastern Long-Beaked Echidna, and the Platypus. The Attenborough’s Long-Beaked Echidna is the smallest species of Echidna and is apparently more closely related to the Short-Beaked Echidna than it is to the other two species of Long-Beakeds. It also possesses a more reddish coloration. All species of monotremes are known for, as I mentioned before, laying eggs instead of giving live birth like placental mammals and marsupials do. Monotremes also lack nipples and instead produce milk for their young out of modified sweat glands like how the early ancestors of all mammals did. Male Platypi/Platypuses (both terms are correct) and Echidnas also have ankle spurs which are highly venomous in the case of the Platypus, but Echidnas seem to have lost their venom and instead use them to help dig. Apparently, they also seasonally secrete a creamy substance their spurs but this, while kinda gross, is harmless.
While the rediscovery of this species is super exciting, we mustn’t forget that Attenborough’s Long-Beaked Echidna is considered Critically Endangered and is still at risk of extinction. Habitat loss and poaching seem to be the biggest threats to this species and many other unique creatures endemic to Oceania.

LOST DOCUMENTS: AN ANNOTATED SELECTION OF MANUSCRIPTS FROM THE BURNED CITY OF VADRIN
Recent archaeological expeditions have uncovered a number of manuscripts from the Burned City of Vadrin, the ancient precursor of today's City Of Towers. Today we will display and give context (as much as we are able) to a few surviving passages.
--
From The Journal of Adap Teriil:
"At the dawn after the meeting [Likely one of the famous Conclaves of the Council, less well practiced today, these would be done every twenty-second day.] I found a dead wizard in front if my tower. Nine wounds, like those of blades but with the unified tearing that only teeth can create. I write that they were a wizard, by their apparel, but they had not a spell left in their bones."
This journal entry seems to describe a victim of some sort of beast, perhaps one of the legendary Mage-Eater Wyrms (rarely, if ever, seen) from the efffects described on the body.
--
From An Unnamed Book of Prophecy:
This manuscript is in possibly the worst condition of all of them. Only fragments could be reconstructed. But Vadrin't prophecies are described as the most accurate in all time, so what little there is is significant nonetheless.
"-- Reach Skyward, And let the Rain answer back--"
[Not enough remains to determine anything concrete]
"--Forces always to stand against, but one will come within the hall and call himself lord--"
"--The truth-teller will give undeath to love near gone--"
[Perhaps refers to Jim and Serioth? I would not expect they were historically significant enough to be prophesied]
--
From Trickster Gods:
"Clowns and wizards are together apart, equal sized stones of terrible materials. To extract the blood of the clown without arousing their interests recite the following incantation : 'Vivivivi Sosososo Colocalo trigh't trigh't Sol'. This will make you invisible to the clown so you can harvest their material for your uses--"
This manuscript seems to be a guide to the uses of clown body parts, as well as a philosophical trearise on power. This is especially significant as many of these spells were thought lost forever.
--
From A Hastily Scribbled Letter:
This last one is a special one. It is a letter found in the great council chambers.
"O my friend, it is upon us. A curse cast long ago has caught up to me and it has enveloped the city with it. All I love is destroyed again. O, I am sorry, I thought that my power could stop their power, but instead we are all doomed.
For the last time, yours, Unna Noan."
This was written by Unna Noan, the last High Councilmember of Vadrin. It is written to an unknown associate. It seems to attribute the fall of the city to a curse of some kind following Unna.
--
We at WIZARD NEWS hope that this informative piece has goven you a greater sense of historical significance.
