I know the solar eclipse was a while ago (I’ve been very busy with school work) but here’s some cool pics I got of the eclipse during totality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went up to see the eclipse up at Lake Wilhelm in Goddard State Park where it was 100% totality, and it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience!
Tumblr media
The horizon turned sunset, it got super cold, and coolest of all (to me) is how the animals reacted. The birds all went silent, peepers started croaking, and when the sun went back to normal the birds began making their morning calls!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also went birdwatching before the eclipse and saw this cool beaver lodge and this stick that the beavers had been chewing on. Sadly, the beavers themselves didn’t make an appearance. Though, my boss (who lives up there) says that the lodge is still inhabited.

HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!
Now that it’s finally starting to warm up, here’s some cool nature pics that I’ve recently taken to celebrate!!!
Tumblr media
A domestic European Honeybee collecting nectar from a dandelion. Either of these species are actually native to my area. However, dandelions aren’t considered invasive because the only plants they really compete with are non-native lawn grasses. They’re also very useful and edible!!!
Tumblr media
A Groundhog poking their head out of their burrow that I found while walking around campus. These guys are also sometimes called Whistle Pigs, which I think is way cuter!!!
Tumblr media
A beaver lodge that I saw up at Lake Wilhelm in Goddard State Park. Sadly, I didn’t see any beavers this time.
Tumblr media
This squirrel who I only noticed because they were chewing incredibly loud!

So over spring break I went to the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators Conference, which was up in the Poconos this year, and oh boy it was amazing!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had so much fun at the conference and am so grateful for my job and my university for providing me with the opportunity to go to this great event! Even though I don’t want to go into the Environmental Education field professionally, I still want to incorporate it in my teaching methods once I become a full time teacher, and this conference had lots of amazing seminars that had a lot of interesting topics that were still incredibly useful to me as an Early Childhood Education major.
Tumblr media
There were also just a bunch of cool things that I got to do and see during this trip! Like seeing all the taxidermy animals at the nature center (I always forge how big elk are till I’m standing underneath a disembodied head of one of them).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also saw this cool Barn Owl named Soaren who was with this animal rescue organization that had a booth at the event, though he wasn’t a rescue and was a captive bred animal ambassador. There were also a pair of Southern Flying Squirrels and a Milksnake but I didn’t get any good pics of them. They didn’t have names either since they’re gonna be released once it warms up.
On the first day we also went on a night hike and saw this amazing beaver swimming in the pond next to the center! It was a magical experience seeing beavers in the wild for the first time and I’ll definitely never forget it!!! 🦫

Got some new quail at work and they’re…. not the brightest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Putting them to bed the first day after getting them was definitely an experience. I ended up having to crawl into their run and forcing them up the ramp into the coop. They came from my university’s psychology department who was working on clicker training them with so this was their first time outside and they were a bit confused.

Just got back from visiting my grandpa’s farm and I’d thought I’d share some pics of his animals. He has a herd of black Hereford and angus cows (with one red Hereford cow) and a rescued horse named Duke who you can’t really ride and so he lives rent free as a pasture pet/massive spoiled brat. We love him though! He was acting real sweet and affectionate, licking mine and my cousin’s hands but it was a ploy to try to get us to lower our defenses so he could sneak out of his pen. When we foiled his plans he decided to try to eat my coat, my cousin’s hair, and my aunt’s hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is a beef farm so none of the cows have names except for the one in the first pic with the black markings on her face. Her name is Houdini because she kept escaping when she was younger and my grandpa has begrudgingly accepted that she’s a pet now. They take her and her calves up to their local fair every year for the petting zoo and cow patty bingo and she’s also the only cow who will let you pet her.
(Btw the mark on Duke’s face is just a bald spot from his halter from when he ripped it off his own face and it’s not a wound or anything)

Part 2 with all the birds we saw!!!
So in the park we saw lots of cool birds since they’re weren’t many people out! We saw:
• pied-billed grebes
• common gallinules
Tumblr media
• a red-shouldered hawk who kept making appearances throughout the trip
• ruddy ducks
• double-crested cormorants
• a pair of mystery ducks that might have been subadult blue-winged teals or even a hybrid of two species since they’re coloration was just a little off
• American coots
• a snail kite who got chased off by the hawk from earlier
• little blue herons
Tumblr media
• a turkey vulture
• tricolored herons
Tumblr media
• white ibises
Tumblr media
• a whole bunch of anhingas nesting
Tumblr media
• a green heron who I swear was in the exact same spot last time I visited Green Cay
Tumblr media
• a really cool yellow-crowned night heron who was sitting super close to the boardwalk and was such a rare find since they’re not out much during the day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• snowy egrets
• glossy ibises
Tumblr media
• a great egret
• Florida mottled ducks which both the males and females look almost identical to female mallards (male mottled ducks have olive colored bills tho)
• swamp hens/purple gallinules
• cattle egrets
• an American bittern which was surprisingly big and also another cool find since they’re pretty shy
Tumblr media
• a male common yellow-throated warbler
• some boat-tailed grackles
• a group of painted buntings that we saw eating from a bird feeder as we were leaving (apparently there was a male that some people before us saw but he flew away and we didn’t get to see him despite waiting for him to come back)
Overall it was a really cool trip and I’m grateful for all the cool birds I saw and for my bf since he’s way better at IDing birds than I am!
Merry belated Christmas everyone!!! I’ve been wanting to make a post for a while now but things have been pretty hectic between coming back from my trip to Florida and helping my family with last minute preparations for Christmas. After that my brain needed a few days to just be goop but I’m back now and want to talk about something pretty cool! So while I was in Florida me and my bf went to go visit this wetlands called Green Cay where you can walk around a board walk and see some pretty cool birds and reptiles. The day we went was pretty cold and cloudy (it was like that for most of the time I was there) so that meant there weren’t many reptiles out but it also meant there weren’t many people there either so we got to see a lot of really cool birds!
As soon as we pulled up to the parking lot we were seeing birds such as blue jays, northern mocking birds, common grackles (of course), a red-bellied woodpecker, mourning doves, and a bunch of squirrels. I know none of those species are rare so it makes sense that I would see them but I think it’s so cool to see species that I’m used to like blue jays, squirrels, and woodpeckers hanging out in palm trees.
Tumblr media
(Red-Bellied Woodpecker)
Next, we went into the visitor center where they had a few exhibits with animals. The first was a display about native frogs Vs invasive frogs that had Cuban tree frogs and cane toads for the invasive species and green tree frogs, pig frogs, and southern toads for the natives. Sadly, I could only find the Cuban tree frog, cane toad, and pig frog since the glass was super foggy and the frogs like to hide anyways. They also had an American kestrel named Kilee and an Eastern screech owl named Oliver in little flight cages. Both birds were born in the wild but now have injuries that prevent them from flying so they have to live the rest of their lives at the center. The sign said Oliver had been hit by a car and for Kilee it just said she had problems with her wing feathers so idk what happened to her. There was also two tanks one that had turtles (peninsula cooters, Florida softshell, and Florida red-bellied) and a second tank that had some baby American Alligators.

(Pig frog, Cuban tree frog, Kilee the American kestrel, Oliver the Eastern screech owl, peninsula cooter, and American alligator babies)
In the actual park we saw lots of cool species since there weren’t many people out. Like I said no alligators though since it was pretty cold out but we did see plenty of iguanas, a massive Florida Softshell in the water, and a basilisk lizard sitting in a tree!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Large male green iguana and either a brown basilisk or a green basilisk who isn’t showing off his coloration we couldn’t tell)
That’s all the pics I can add to this post so I’m gonna make a part 2 with all the birds we saw.

I didn’t get a pic of it because it happened so fast but while me and my bf were driving to the store I’m pretty sure I saw a roseate spoonbill just chilling in a ditch along the side of the road!!! Roseate spoonbills are one of my favorite species of birds and even tho I didn’t get any pics of this potential sighting, I do have some from when I was visiting my bf last year and saw some spoonbills in his backyard!
Tumblr media
They were just chilling by the pond behind his house and at first I thought they were just some ibises because they were so far away until I noticed their pink color. This was my first time seeing roseate spoonbills in the wild so I was over the moon with excitement!!! It’s actually kinda funny since we were just about to go to this wetlands park called Green Cay to go look for spoonbills since they had been sighted there a few days before but then they show up right in his backyard!!! It was super cool and I really hope to see them again in the wild. From what I hear they’re rare in Florida but my bf knows a place in Orlando (I think) where you can see a bunch of them. I don’t know if we’ll have time to go there but I know we are planning on going to Green Cay while I’m down here so maybe I’ll make a post about that later.

Me and my bf just helped a Florida Softshell Turtle (Apalone ferox) cross the road in his neighborhood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have really long necks so you have to hold them from the back so you don’t get bit, but this beauty was surprisingly calm while we moved her towards the pond that she was heading to. There’s a couple ponds in community and it was trying to go from one to another but it needed to cross the road but luckily was found by a group of neighbor kids who called my bf to help since he’s known as the reptile guy in his neighborhood.
I hope this beautiful girl has a happy life and that she doesn’t need to cross anymore roads or if she does she has someone to help her. 🐢

Willow, Aspen, Priscilla, and Winter.
I’m currently visiting my bf in Florida for two weeks while we’re both on winter break and he’s just as crazy about animals as I am so here’s all of his pets.
1. The fish tanks
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has two fish tanks: a larger personal tank that he keeps at home and contains neon tetras, panda corydoras (that I couldn’t find because they like to hide in the plants), cherry shrimp, and ghost shrimp. Then there’s his smaller tank that he usually keeps at his dorm which also has some shrimp, some limpets, and bladder snails, but also has some rummy-nosed tetras and three African dwarf frogs named Fufu, Fumbwa, and Frank Sinatra. However, since that tank doesn’t have a lid and he didn’t want the cats messing with the fish and frogs he moved them to his larger tank over for over break.
2. Ganüsh the White’s tree frog
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He usually likes to hide so it’s hard to get pics of him.
3. Bocaj the Chahoua gecko
Tumblr media
His name is literally my name backwards because when he was a baby he hated me and would always bite me and no one else but now we’re friends and he lets me hold him sometimes.
4. Keshet the Brazilian rainbow boa
Tumblr media
She’s absolutely stunning and I wish I could get a full body shot but this was taken right before she was fed and now that she’s eaten I don’t want to disturb her while she’s digesting. She’s still a baby but she’s grown a lot since he first got her. She also has a hidden Mickey on her but I don’t think you can see it in this pic.
Those are all of his pets though his parents also have two dogs and two cats. The cats are named Winter and Priscilla and I love them despite being allergic to them. The dogs are both white golden retrievers named Willow and Aspen. Willow is a gremlin and she scratched my foot but Aspen is a nice old man so we’re chill.
