You ever hear of ultimate marvel vs capcom community edition and if so are there any characters you would want added?

Could other characters from The Shadow work well in a fighting game?

1: Yes, absolutely, I've been keeping up with it for a while now and regularly watch the tournament matches. They achieved absolutely astounding results with porting over Infinite's characters as well as making new ones. Movesets are still kinda lacking the flair of original characters but that would be a really unfair standard to judge them by considering all the limitations they have to work around with and have already overcome (different game but I still remember how big of a milestone it was when Brawl modders learned how to code projectiles into new movesets, let alone make new characters, modding entire new characters is brain-breaking work). I'm particularly extremely impressed with Asura, who was never in the games so they had to make an entire new moveset for him and he absolutely feels and plays just like how he should, with slightly less janky camera work he could EASILY pass as a vanilla character (also kudos to the voice actors they got for Captain Commando and Ben Grimm and others, UMVC3 is known for it's quality voice acting and they really help make the characters feel like they always belonged in the game)

Honestly I don't really know which characters I'd want added, I'm happy with what they're able to deliver. I know my boy Juggernaut is in the works and I'm excited for other characters they might bring back, but what I most want to see is new ones, the characters they're adding that were never in the series and they're having to build new stuff for like Ben Grimm. I've seen they're working on mods for Electro and Shocker, which is good, I would be happiest if they could add other Spider-Man villains in there, particularly Mysterio, Sandman who, yes, would be a graphics nightmare but I think has a lot of moveset potential, Doctor Octopus who was so so close to being in the game for real, and of course Rhino, who is definitely redundant next to Haggar and Hulk and Juggernaut but nope, don't care, put Rhino in it right now, just port over Abigail/Zangief assets and you're halfway there.

2: From The Shadow? Hmm, honestly no, not really. The unreleased beat em up I think was as close as you'd get and even that had issues. Overwhelming majority of the agents don't really fight or have things that you can build a fighting game moveset out of, some characters like Myra and Cliff and definitely Jericho can do that but you'd still be really really reaching to give them things to do, and the villains aren't particularly interesting nor do they lend themselves to it as well. You could do a lot of things with The Shadow and with Shiwan Khan, maybe the Voodoo Master or one of the wackier comic characters if you feel like really putting in the work, but at that point you might as well just make a pulp-based fighting game and include them instead of basing it around The Shadow. Playing and obsessing over Disco Elysium is consuming my every waking hour giving me ideas to reconsider how I'd make a videogame based on The Shadow and a fighting game, much as I intend to make one someday, is definitely not one of them.

I just caught this but your cat's name is Evangelion! Every cat I've had as an adult I've seriously considered naming Evangelion (but ultimately they were named Lyoko, Nirvash, and Winry).

That’s right, she’s the lady of the hour, every hour, Miss Evangelion Unit 01 😍😍😍

I love all my kids equally but I’ve been accused of loving her the most and TO BE FAIR she’s like… the only girl in my life… I’ve got 3 sons and exclusively date boys… like the only reason I’m a feminist is for her… I may be one of those dads who becomes a huge softy around their daughter…

It doesn’t help that she’s like. The most cat ever… she’s sassy and proud, but she’s also super gooby and squishy… she acts like she grumpy all the time but she purrs so easily even when she’s beeping angrily… she doesn’t scratch or bite but still manages to be… pointedly expressive… she’s insanely food motivated… she loves to wear sweaters…

The name came about bc her previous name was Myra which reads as “sweet old lady” name to me and this cat is as racing around my apartment yelling at me and knocking things off my counters. I told my friend this and he says “oh my god she’s gone berserk, just like unit 01” and I laugh but then I think… “Evangelion unit 01… Eva… running around screaming and destroying things…” and so it was.

Oh, easy. Spoilers for the end of Skulduggery Pleasant book 3, and much vaguer spoilers for book 7 (just scroll until you see the Drow in the green cloak to skip them)

Fandom first. Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain, the main duo of my absolute favourite book series, Skulduggery Pleasant. I’ll assume you know nothing about them because that lets me ramble even more

At the start of the series, Valkyrie is 12 and her uncle just got murdered as part of a plot to bring back ancient eldritch gods (of course, they don’t know that from the get-go). She meets Skulduggery when a nameless henchman (who I later found out from the wiki is called Vindick Leather) breaks into her uncle’s house while she’s staying there for the night and attacks her; Skulduggery then uses air magic to blast the front door off of its hinges, sets the guy on fire, shoots him in the shoulder, and loses his disguise in the fight therefore revealing that he’s a skeleton

Long story short, she takes his hat hostage and threatens to trample it if he doesn’t let her tag along, and now she’s his partner in crime

Sorcerers choose their own names by the way, so Skulduggery literally named himself Trickery, and this happened before he became a skeleton and it also became a pun. Valkyrie named herself partway through their first case

Great, context and exposition out of the way! I LOVE THEIR DYNAMIC SO SO MUCH!! They shaped pretty much my entire sense of humour, I love them, I’ve loved them since I was 9 or so and I wanted to be like Valkyrie when I grew up. The way they bounce off of each other, the way they’re perfectly in sync, the little codes and recurring phrases they have that only have meaning to them (“the sparrow flies south for winter”, “doors are for people with no imagination”, and “until the end”). I just love them both so much

The fact that Valkyrie was willing to open the portal to the home world of ancient eldritch gods who despise humanity, just on the very slim chance he would be alive and have even the smallest shred of sanity left, after having been dragged there a year prior. The fact that Skulduggery was willing to go into complete and total isolation for eternity to protect her in the magic equivalent of cryogenic sleep if it came down to that. They would do literally anything for each other. I think I’m running out of ways to put how much I adore their dynamic into words, so I’ll sum it up as the ideal example of platonic soulmates. They’re very, very special to me

I mostly just talked about the serious side of their dynamic because I have no clue how to put the more lighthearted side into words without rattling off quotes. Rest assured, they are also hilarious

Skulduggery is also very quotable, too

Right, OC time. I have a limited selection; most OCs I made have been lost to time, either because they got attached to bad memories (like Kai Zoku, who I am only mentioning because I still think his name is great; it’s literally just the Japanese word for pirate and he was the Ultimate Pirate Captain. It’s an Ace Attorney level name pun, I love it), or because the D&D campaign they were made specifically for crashed and burned and I never found somewhere else for them to fit (looking at you, Myra.. at least I could recycle her name into my GW2 character)

Anyway! This is Kyrae, my Drow Warlock. Her campaign has been on a cliffhanger for two years and is officially coming back next month! This is a picrew, but I edited all of the colours myself. It’s not 100% accurate, but it’s the best I can do

Kyrae (no last name) is from the jungle region of Xen’drik, a continent where dinosaurs still roam and everything is shrouded in disorienting, cursed mist. Her campaign is in Eberron, a lesser-used official setting, and Eberron Drow are split into three main cultures; the Sulatar, the Umbragen, and the Vulkoori

Kyrae is Vulkoori, a culture of many tribes - some more nomadic than others - who all worship the scorpion god Vulkoor, all in different ways. In Kyrae’s tribe, he has the epithets Vulkoor the Hunter and Vulkoor the Wrathful. They honour him via skilled hunting, and when given a reason to, being so ruthless and brutal that they’ve gained a reputation as bloodthirsty. That reputation came from their enemies, but they’ve never corrected it. They’re mostly isolated, with a few good allies to trade with

Her cloak was a gift from her best friend, Ryzul, who was stung by a scorpion while they were out hunting together. He was dead before they got home. Kyrae overheard a discussion about what to do; this was clearly a sign that Vulkoor was angry with the tribe, so maybe a sacrifice would appease him. And who better, than the victim’s closest friend, who was with him at the time? It’s been implied that there was another reason for that decision, but that was said out of character, so she has no idea

She ran when she heard that, and didn’t stop until she bumped into a shadowy figure wearing a smooth, white mask, with nothing but three black crescents in the shape of a smiling face. An Archfey. He seemed surprised that she could see him, and they struck a deal. She clearly needed help, and he was incredibly bored, so he would provide that help and she would provide a good story to watch. He helped her find the only port, and she boarded a ship to Korvaire, the continent the campaign takes place on

Fast forward maybe 20 minutes after stepping off of the boat. Kyrae caught a goblin child pickpocketing her, which lead to a guard attempting to throw the goblin off of a ledge, which of course lead to combat. Kyrae wasn’t having that, no harm had actually been done. For her first turn in the first combat in her first hour of being on this continent, she had her familiar, Vanguard (a winged mongoose who was summoned on the boat ride, more on him later), barrel into the guard and send him hurtling off the ledge. The rest of the party saw the fight break out, helped her, and she just kind of started following them because no one objected. They’re her tribe now, and her entire sense of identity, morality, and purpose is based on them, what she thinks they would or would not approve of, etc

So, Vanguard. A winged mongoose. The wings don’t have much significance, I had a choice between a familiar that can fly or a familiar that can swim really fast. They’re feathered, but I was so indecisive about what they actually look like that I ended up deciding they’re from a different bird every time he’s summoned. Now, the other half of his description is way more important, and I spent SO LONG deciding on it. I didn’t concern myself with specific species because then I would have never settled on one and he’s technically a Fey anyway, but. A mongoose is not only an animal Kyrae could have reasonably seen before, but they’re known for resisting venom and fighting venomous animals. Kyrae just turned her back on a scorpion god. It’s simple, but I think I’m clever. This art is, as always, by @prince-frederic

I’ve already explained Sigurd’s full backstory once or twice here, so I think I’ll pick Vivian for my next OC

This is Vivian Harker, a Bloodborne OC! The token is a picrew that I did the colours for again, and the art is once again by Milo

I’ll pull back the curtain a bit here; she was inspired by Hammerlock! More specifically, it went like this:

Hammerlock would be really fun to have in Bloodborne, but I obviously can’t just take an existing character and use him in this TTRPG. It boils down to someone having the time of their life fighting the horrible monstrosities and maybe writing things down about them - can’t take cool trophies when you need to stay mobile. How do I justify that in such a dark setting? Maybe their dad was a hunter and they’ve grown up hearing stories about it, but they have no idea what they’re actually getting themselves into!

The end result is Vivian, who’s thrilled to be playing out the stories she’s grown up with now, and is filling out a sketchbook (with suspiciously red ink) along the way. She became a 16 year old white girl because she was made for a TTRPG campaign, and I can’t change my voice very much. She has no idea that when her father told those stories, he left out the traumatic parts

Daniel Harker was a fairly accomplished hunter. I say was, because this time, he refused to leave home to hunt. That was the first sign that something wasn’t right. The rest were little things, like teeth that are slightly sharper than before, eyes that reflect light like a cat’s. Little things, that indicated some kind of transformation was coming

Vivian could tell. She knew that the monsters used to be people, that hunters get affected the worst of all. She couldn’t get answers, though. So she took his equipment - the clothes a little too big for her - and left only a note to explain where she had gone

She’s thrilled to be here, to actually be fighting these creatures she’s been told about so many times, to be slowly filling her book with sketches and notes, but time is limited. She just doesn’t know how limited

The other, crucial thing she doesn’t know, is that there are no happy endings to be had in Yharnam

AND THEN THE DM GHOSTED ME SO SHE NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO DEVELOP OR ACTUALLY EXIST. SHE WAS OLDER THAN ME WHEN I MADE HER. THAT’S HOW LONG SHE’S BEEN IN STASIS

Yes Harwin and Laena were both screwed over for Daemyra but we can’t compare the two, Laena’s was still worse because of the racist writing.

Rhaewin’s moments were less than 5 minutes but you could see they loved each other and were happy with their family. Daemon is never mentioned, Rhaenyra tells Daemon she loved Harwin, more importantly it’s pretty clear she prefers her Strong boys.

In contrast Laena is always reminded she’s second best, Daemon would rather be with his white niece, he openly flirts with male servants, he sleeps with Rhaenyra at her funeral and never interacts with their daughters.

The writers may have sidelined Harwin but they still made an effort to show Rhaenyra did love him. Laena was loved in the books, she was wanted but the show writers would have you believe she’s not important because she’s not white.

yes this is how I see it too. both characters were done a disservice and its clear that the writers wanted to push dae/myra and not have any other well developed love interests but there's layers of misogynoir when it comes to Laena as well as her daughters. Ultimately Laena was treated like a placeholder for Rhaenyra and Daemon looks miserable during their very short moments on screen together. I was suprised to find he actually seemed to love her in the books because in my opinion it didn't seem like he did.

Also you bring up a good point about the funeral. Harwin was definitely not disrespected in that way. Like, regardless of how you feel about ships and characters the fact that they had sex ON THE DAY OF HER FUNERAL with their daughters inside grieving is disgusting and made it look like they were just were waiting for her to be put to rest so they could finally fuck. That time could have been used to show daemon bond with his daughters. Seeing him as a single father who only shares common interests with the tomboy dragon rider and he has trouble connecting with the other, more feminine daughter - it parallels Ned, Arya and Sansa in a way and I would have actually enjoyed seeing that play out even with a character I dislike, it would give daemon more layers and actually include the girls in the plot more.

I'm starting work on the Ultimate Question Spreadsheet, which means going over every single Question comic, which means I'm going to be liveblogging my way through 56 years of comics because if I try to store all these thoughts in my head I'll explode. Starting from the beginning:

Blue Beetle (1967) #1

The art slaps. This is exactly how Vic's mask should be drawn, nailed it first try.

It's a shame that the news crew is so one-note. There's the outline of some interesting drama, but they all end up being vessels for Steve Ditko's Opinions and then disappearing before anything really goes anywhere.

Great job there buddy, you saved the city from a guy with a kite shirt. Truly an extraordinary crime fighter.

Vic seeing his first supervillain and immediately kicking ass is hilarious. Even the other people in the room are like "hey. what"

The tracksuit and turtleneck outfit is a Look, I think he should wear it again.

I think a lot about Vic's character development, so him being a prick feels normal, but Tot is so solid in my head that it's jarring to see him be so bland. Vic is running all over the city to fistfight a kite guy and he's just chill with that? Bizarre.

Nora's fun though. I can see how the bits of character she has were repurposed into Myra.

Appearance number 1 of drowning as a motif. Yes I will be counting.

The Ted and Vic interactions would be so fun, and they're a neat way of linking the main story with the backup. Unfortunately the throughline is Ditko getting mad at modern art and accusing it of destroying "real" Western art, so they just end up sounding like statue pfp Twitter racists. It sucks :/

Vic using the binary gas for gaslighting is funny, at least.

dennis nilsen letters: part two

nilsen wrote to another unnamed penpal on september 4th, 2003. while the letter found in this article is seemingly ordinary, i think there are some interesting insights on his personality to consider throughout it.

he begins with his criticisms on the prison system’s procedures on receiving money. he then begins to talk about a documentary on myra hindley, who killed five children in england with her lover, ian brady.

“I watched the Channel Five documentary on Myra Hindley last night. One suspects that any programme with “Monster” in its title is not to be taken seriously as offering any new insight into the subject. TV journalism remains too set in its populist formulas. It revealed no new analysis or enlightening information. It hinged itself on that famous ‘demonic’ photograph of her taken at the police station. That saved millions the bother of ever having to think deeply about her ever again.”

this excerpt gives us insight on his opinions towards true crime material. in another letter circulating around, he writes to another person saying “my singular observation on crimes crackers is that they are mostly crackers.” i admit, i share the same opinion on the title of the documentary. the word monster is a reoccurring word in the titles of many serial killer documentaries and dramas. two examples would be the series invisible monsters: serial killers in america and monster: the jeffrey dahmer story. the use of the word can become overused and repetitive, which simplifies the unique details of an individual and their case.

my favorite part of this letter is towards the end.

“Scientists tell us that an asteroid might strike the earth on 21st April 2014. If I’m still around, I’ll look out for it as the end of the world is something not to be missed. Friendly greetings as always, Des. PS: What do you think of the new Bull Ring development?”

some of nilsen’s personality is revealed through these few lines. he seems quite pretentious even in his letters. not surprising, given his narcissistic personality disorder diagnosis. he is intelligent and provides thorough descriptions for his opinions (whether they make sense or not). and then he just out of nowhere, adds on something completely irrelevant and a little bizarre. seems like he had the attention span of a squirrel here, but it was probably just an attempt to make the recipient laugh. honestly, i found it amusing. it truly feels like you are reading the letter of a pretentious old man that likes to joke around.

i’m not sure if this next excerpt is from this same letter, but the article mentions it nonetheless, as it connects with earlier topics.

"I serve my time as an extreme example of human contradiction in the wide continuum of human nature and its actions. I am not contained, mute and immobile in a glass jar as some kind of eternal official specimen of popular 'evil'. As I am alive I must live as a man. I seek only to reach out to engage with the human dimension which is anathema to rigid officials of the retribution machine who are content with the official view of men like me as eternally and evilly sub-human and monstrous."

i believe he means he is a complex person who should not be simply categorized as evil, just as myra was. he deeply wants people to understand him less as a criminal and more as a person. he feels he is interpreted through a lens that ultimately deems him as evil, and that opinion is therefore passed on to others without further thought like a machine. des honey this is a difficult thing to ask for, since you killed multiple innocent lives.

i have two opinions about this that coexist, even though they are conflicting. this makes a lot of sense, while making no sense at all. his opinions and meanings are there, but it’s overshadowed by fancy syntax that does not always fit. especially that last run on sentence, as it takes him a long time to get to the point. he’s right about being contradictory- he desperately wants to be seen, but toys around with the idea more than outright demands it. his autobiography in its draft form included hours of tapes and 6,000 pages of notes. he forces people to understand him and will drag time out to do it. however, he is too high up on his own hill to level with everyone else.

his intentions may come in bits and pieces, but we may never have a clear understanding of who dennis nilsen truly was.

the truth is they're half sisters, connected by their mother, REDACTED. could this be why Schwartz Industries is so interested in the pair?

Headcanon: Myra is 100% the kind of woman who threatened to divorce Eddie when she wasn’t getting her way. She would probably even go as far as to pick up divorce papers and make Eddie sign them “as a reminder”. When Eddie comes home Post-Pennywise (because he and Stan survived dammit!) the first thing he does when he’s back in New York was hand in the divorce papers, sign the house over to Myra and leave with Richie to California. Because Eddie isn’t a heartless monster, he put more than enough money into Myra’s account for her to live comfortably for a year while she looked for a job (because, let’s be honest, Eddie was totally the sole breadwinner)

I love this because it's absolutley how it went down, Myra is such a manipulative woman she would do everything in her power to get him to stay (which ultimately fails but she sure did try)

Edwina likes that Friedrich is extremely straightforward - he rarely does sarcasm. She prefers that after dating guys who love speaking in code (lmaoo english men are menaces).

Friedrich likes how enthusiastic she is in life. She enjoys everything she does, finds joy in the every day. Royals are rather snooty generally and only express emotion at weddings and funerals, so having someone who celebrates the small wins and the big ones is lovely.

They both enjoy them. That couple who dance and socialise together.

Friedrich - you are so right! He has a whole album of candid pictures of Edwina. She is so tired of this man (affectionately). He also has those good quality cameras. The ultimate Instagram husband.

23. How well do they know each other’s favourite foods?

Pretty well! They are both people who are always up for trying something new in terms of food. Friedrich is a terrible cook and he tried to cook a recipe that Kate sent him and it came out terribly but Edwina appreciated the effort.

26. If they have kids, who named them? What would they name them?

They both name them, but Friedrich insists Edwina has the final say as she did the hard work, so to speak. In one of my fics, they have three children - Maria Kaira Louise, Charlotte Myra Elizabeth and Alexander Friedrich Mikesh - all named for people important to them.

30. When did they realize they loved each other?

Edwina realises when he sneaks out of the country under his alias to see her when she accidentally calls him and he thinks she's sick. He brings a gift basket and everything.

Friedrich realises when she seeks him out at any gathering they are at. She's shy with all the attention on them but will always find him just for a hug or to check on him.
