I granted a Sims request by fourleafcloverr22, which was recreating Steve Urkel, the Winslow family and Myra Monkhouse from the 90s sitcom Family Matters.

I used Maxis clothes and hairs on them, so you can dress them easily however you like in Bodyshop The only CC I used were makeup or facial hair on some of them. Please unzip them with Sims2pack Clean Installer to select which CCs you want to include.

While I like the idea of the nerd™ ultimately getting the girl without changing who he is, Steve was too good for Laura. She didn’t accept his true self until basically the last moments of the show, and probably wouldn’t have had they not been cancelled.
Tumblr media
While I think she liked him a little more than she ever cared to admit throughout the years, she always made him change into Stefan before she gave him any sort of romantic attention. And what’s worse—he willingly changed himself for her.
Tumblr media
Myra accepted and loved him for who he was right from the beginning and that’s who truly deserved his attention.

Steve Urkel, menace to society?
In the 90′s the formula for sitcoms was dysfunction = comedy. There are many examples of this in various shows like Boy Meets World, Martin, My Brother and Me and the topic of today Family Matters. Last year I set forth to debunk the rumor of Judith Winslow that one day young Judy went upstairs and never came back down. So to do that I watched the first 4 seasons of Family Matters and on that journey there was a lot to unpack and that’s not all happening today.

(AI generated Steve Urkel Drawing Using WOMBO)
Since I brought it up the last episode Judy was on was Grandmom Winslow’s wedding episode. She did not go upstairs during that sequence for any reason. What is even funnier is that a few episodes before that during the credits the Winslow's sit down to watch something on TV Judy is sitting at the end of the couch. Urkel decides to try to squeeze himself in the middle which bumps Judy off the couch onto the floor. I don’t know if that was intentional foreshadowing like they knew that the contract for her wasn’t renewed or whatever but it is ironic that Urkel dethrones her and she is gone within a couple episodes.
While I was watching the show to see when exactly Judy disappeared from the show a lot of things about Urkel bothered me while watching the show. Not things that were funny, but things that were played for jokes and I’m just sitting thinking “someone should probably call child protective services.” For those who don’t remember Family Matters that well, Urkel shows up for one episode in season 1 and then in season 2 he’s worked in more as a regular character until it basically became the Steve Urkel show left in many a 90′s kid’s memories.
Family Matters was originally a spin off of some show I don’t remember the name of where Harriett Winslow is an elevator attendant and Carl shows up from time to time. There’s even an episode where Harriett asks for a raise and gets fired because elevator attendants aren’t needed and half of the episode is her stressing about finding a job but since it’s a sitcom before that 30 minute mark hits she got a job. You don’t really need to watch it unless you have a extreme curiosity.
So what bothered me about Steve Urkel? Early on it’s established that his parents seemingly do not care for him. In one episode Urkel says that he’s not allowed in his home before his curfew time. Another episode indicates that he’s not eating after he runs to the Winslow’s fridge and grabs their cheese. These are jokes quickly passed off as jokes in the early part of season 2, I don’t remember exactly what episodes. The greatest thing that I found issue with about Urkel is his pursuits of Laura Winslow. He was relentless and often put himself in physical danger to get a date with Laura. One episode he sat on the Winslow’s roof during a storm and refused to come down unless Laura went on a date with him. In season 4 Urkel was following Laura on dates trying to sabotage them.
Urkel was basically presented as this lovable character and at the end of every episode all would be forgiven. I feel like that can only go so far, he caused so much money in property damage repeatedly breaking the Winslow’s kitchen windows, destroying other parts of their home with his inventions, burning down Rachel’s Restaurant as well as many other things. At what point does someone say like hey maybe we need to do something about Urkel, he’s cost this family so much money in repair costs, he’s constantly harassing our daughter something’s got to give.
What makes the situation even more complicated is that when Urkel met Myra in season 4 he was practically out of the picture. Laura had this episode where she realized that she missed Steve bothering her and went to talk to her Aunt Rachel. Aunt Rachel could have said something like you know what, do something to take your mind off of Steve, he’s happy and you can be happy too. Nope she reinforces the fact that Laura missed Steve and gives her the idea that Laura considered him a friend. Which caused Laura to interfere with the relationship between Steve Urkel and Myra. Honestly the whole thing was kind of undeserved for the character Myra and I think after possibly going back to that season and refreshing myself on some things I could do another in depth look at the Laura, Steve and Myra dynamic. For now I will leave you with this, Steve Urkel might have been a funny character and even now you might look back at some of the things he did and laugh but he probably should not have been around the Winslows at all.
