November, 2019.
Park days were the best days for the Styles family. They didn’t get to have them as much as they’d like as they were always so busy, but today was an off day and Artemis was responsible for choosing what they were going to do. And of course he chose the park.
Y/N packed some snacks in a picnic basket while Harry took the job of dressing Artemis up. Obviously Artemis ended up way too dress up for just going to the park but it wasn’t a secret Harry was crazy about them wearing the same color or matching outfits to go out.
Harry had picked a pair of white shorts and paired it with a pastel yellow polo shirt he tucked into the shorts. Artemis looked adorable although Harry knew his son most likely get the clothes dirty as soon as they arrive to the park.
“Daddy, my nose itches.” Artemis tried to take off his glasses but Harry stopped him.
Last month they had an appointment with the ophthalmologist and Artemis had to change his glasses at his doctor's request. But Artemis wasn't happy with his new ones, he was always looking for an excuse to take them off or hiding them from his parents.
"Better?" Harry asked, using his fingers to scratch softly where Artemis pointed it itched. The much smaller boy nodded. "You need the glasses, sweetheart. Don't take them off."
"I like my old ones better, why can't i have those?"
"Those doesn't work for you anymore, monkey." He explained. "C'mon, let's put your shoes on." Harry knelt in front of him to watch how Artemis ties his sneakers up, he smiled when his son made it without a problem.
"I just put the things in the car, are you ready?" Y/N said when she saw them coming down the stairs.
"Yes! Let's go, let's go!" Artemis almost jumped from the lasts steps.
Artemis rambled the entire ride about all the fun things they’d do together once they got there, constantly asking if they were at the park already. When they arrived, Harry was surprised it wasn’t so full of people, considering it was the weekend. Y/N unfolded the blanket on the grass, laying the stuff they brought.
“Daddy, let’s play.” Artemis pulled from Harry’s arm, making the latest chuckle.
“Just be careful, please. We don’t want you to fall.” Y/N remained her son, who was too busy running around with his dad.
It was a beautiful day outside, there wasn’t a single cloud in the sky, and the weather was perfect despite being in the middle of November. Harry had packed a Frisbee Artemis liked to use in their backyard and that’s what they were using to play.
Harry made sure to throw it softly at his son, not wanting the toy to hit him in the face. Artemis threw his hands in the air every time his daddy caught it.
Everything happened too fast, none of his parents could catch Artemis before he was face down on the grass. He had tried to throw the Frisbee higher but didn’t control his strength and he ended up on the floor.
Harry’s eyes grew wide as he ran towards the small child, his heart breaking as he heard his loud sobs. He picked him up from the grass and scooped him in his arms.
"Are you hurt? Where does it hurt, baby? Is it your arm?" He said, panic visible in his tone.
"He scraped his knees." Y/N said before cooing at Artemis, trying to calm him down. "Got some band aids for your knees, my love. It's okay." She took him in her arms and handed the band aids to Harry so he could put them on his boy's knees after cleaning the little blood that was there.
Caressing his hair softly, Y/N sat back down on the blanket, putting Artemis on her lap to wipe his tears off. "All better?" He nodded with a pout on his face.
Harry copied his son's pout, sitting next to them on the blanket. He didn't like seeing his love being upset, and he'd lie if he said he didn't feel a little guilty for him getting hurt.
"It's okay, accidents happen and sometimes we get hurt." Y/N said as if she could read Harry's thoughts. "What if we eat and then we can go for ice cream."
The smile reappeared on Artemis' face as he stood up from his mum's lap and cheered excitedly. Artemis ate whatever Y/N had packed for them, hurrying his parents so they could go get dessert.
"Are you okay?" Y/N asked Harry at the end of the day when Artemis was falling asleep on his daddy's shoulder as he carried him back to the car. "You've been quiet since he fell."
"Just worried. Should we take him to ER?"
"For scraped knees? Don't think so. Harry, it's fine, really. He doesn't even remember he has them." She assured. "Tomorrow it will be all better."
"But he cried so loud." He furrowed as they reached the car and Y/N opened the door of the backseat so Harry could put him on his carseat. "I was worried he hurt his elbow or something."
"I guess it was more out of surprise. He wasn't expecting to fall facedown on the floor." Once everything and everyone were in the car, Harry started to drive back home. "Please don't beat yourself up for this. It was literally an accident."
"But i was playing with him."
"Yes, but you couldn't have prevented it from happen."
She put a hand on his thigh, not wanting him to feel any worse from something so small. Artemis doesn't have a lot of accidents as he is a calm boy who doesn't play sports or anything that requires running or jumping, but when they happen, he gets scared and that's normal. No kid likes to see blood coming out of them, even if it's only a little.
"As a parent the best you can do is stay calm during these situations. If you don't panic, then he doesn't either." She smiled at him.
Y/N loved how protective Harry was, his skills as a parent never failed to show in any situation. But he was still very new at it, and he couldn't help but want to put his boy in a little bubble so nothing bad would happen to him.
*:・゚✧ ✧゚・: *:・゚✧ ✧゚・:
A week later, Y/N was cooking dinner while Artemis was upstairs in the movie room watching a cooking show on Netflix. Lately he's been obsessed with those and could watch entire seasons if his parents let him.
Harry was out having a meeting with his team but promised to be back for dinner, so it was just the two of them in the house.
The buzzer sounded, alerting someone was at the other side of the gates. Y/N put down the knife she was holding and walked towards the little screen that allowed her to see who was there.
Her breathe hitched when she saw Caleb standing there. He was looking the other way but Y/N could recognize him anywhere. A frown appeared on her face as he hit the buzzer again. She stayed in her place, starting at the screen and hoping he'd turn around and leave.
But he didn't.
She was ready to go outside and tell him to leave but she heard the gates open before she could do so. The gates opening meant Harry was home.
And home he was. But he furrowed as soon as he saw a body standing there. He didn't recognize the man but he was pretty sure he's seem his face before.
He parked inside but didn't close again the gates as he returned outside. "Can i help you?" Harry asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Is Y/N home?" The stranger asked, putting his hands inside of his pockets. "I need to speak to her."
"I'm sorry, who are you?"
"Doesn't matter, i need to see Y/N."
"Uh, it does matter, actually. Why is it so important to speak to my girlfriend?" Harry questioned again in a protective tone.
Before he could answer Harry's question, Y/N came out of the house, closing the door behind her before rushing towards the two man. She stood beside Harry, taking his hand in hers.
"What are you doing here, Caleb?" She asked and Harry's brain finally clicked. He looked so different from the only picture he's seen of him. "What do you want?"
"I need to see him, Y/N." Caleb said, almost in a demanding tone. Y/N looked up at Harry, who already had a deep, angry frown on his face. "I-I saw that video of you three at the park and... Y/N, i'm ready to meet my-"
"He's not your son." Harry barked angrily.
"Harry's right, Caleb. He's not yours in any way." She said sternly. "Besides, i bet it isn't the first video or picture you've seen of us, what could possibly make this one different?"
"I saw him getting hurt." He said defensively. "It.. awoke something in me. I want to be a father, Y/N."
"Then go ahead and get a family of your own because neither Artemis nor I have anything to do with you. Do i have to remind you, you signed the paper giving up your paternal rights?" Y/N started to get angry and Harry squeezed her hand.
"I was twenty-one, Y/N."
"So was I!" She now exclaimed.
"I think it's best if you leave." Harry spoke again, trying to control his anger before he punched that man straight on the face.
"And you are?" Caleb asked "Oh, right. You're the guy she replaced me with. Does my son calls you daddy too?"
"She didn't replace you, she just moved on with someone way better." He smirked. "And yes, my son calls me daddy, must hurt, right? Now get the fuck out of my property before i call the bloody cops."
Harry let go of Y/N's hand just to push Caleb out, not being able to hold his anger anymore. "If i ever see you close to my family, i'll fucking ruin you."
When Caleb was back on his car, Harry finally closed the gates and turned to see Y/N. "I'm sorry you had to see him, my love."
Y/N sighed. "I'm okay. I just... I hadn't seen him since he..." Her lip started trembling but she swallowed the tears. "Seeing his face brought back a lot of emotions."
"Couldn't imagine." Harry took her in his arms and kissed her forehead. "But you won't see him anymore, over my dead body."
"Thank you."
Harry smiled softly at her, supping her face with his hands and pecking her lips. "Thank you for letting me be the one by your side."
"I wouldn't dream of having anyone else."

Chapter Nine: He’s A Rockstar
Tumblr media
Forever? Masterlist
7th April 2017 “Big day today!” Roman welcomes Ashley as she entered the offices, armed with a box of donuts and a fruit platter, her attempt at making Harry and his team feel welcome. She knew he would be getting the VIP treatment at Radio 1 seeing as Harry was so close to Nick, so she wanted to make sure he felt equally as comfortable at Capital.
“Tell me about it,” she sighed, “Harry was texting me all of last night, worrying about what people will think, but you and I both know how loyal his fans are, he could release a nursery rhyme fused with rap, and he’d probably somehow go to number one.”
“That actually isn’t a bad idea.” Roman chuckled, “Anyway, what time is Harold getting here?”
“Well he’s on the show at 8:30, so just before that I guess.” Ashley explained.
“Good morning you are listening to the Capital Breakfast show that was Shape of You by Ed Sheeran.” Roman said into his microphone.
“Now today is a very special day in music history, because we have got solo artist Harry Styles in the studio,” Ashley told the listeners, gaining an applause from the staff in the studio.
“Hello, thank you for having me,” Harry said softly.
“We’re going to play the track in a minute, but I have to ask you, how does it feel being a solo artist?” Roman asked him.
“It’s weird, but in a good way, I’m excited for you all to hear it, well Ash heard it last week, when she bought Daisy over.” Harry told him.
“And what did you think of it Ash?” Roman asked.
“She cried when I played it, I think they were happy tears, and Daisy, my harshest critic liked it enough not to fall asleep during it.” Harry explained.
“That’s great, well would you like to do the honours of introducing it Harry?” Roman enquired.
“You’re listening to my new single Sign of the Times on Capital.” Harry soothed into the microphone. Ashley sat quietly as the first few lines began to play, “You aren’t going to cry again are you Ash?” Harry got up, wandering over to where she was sat to give her a quick embrace.
“It’s incredible H, congrats man.” Roman gave him a tight hug, patting him on the back.
“Hiya Jean, how’s she been?” Ashley asked, entering the house of her childminder.
“An absolute angel as always, she’s going to break hearts one day.” Jean led her through to the living room where Daisy was playing with two girls around the age of four years old, “she loves playing with these two, and they love playing with her, we also made some cupcakes today, these are Daisy’s.” Jean handed her a pink tupperware box filled with four cupcakes decorated with piles of sprinkles and smarties.
“They’re lovely thank you, I think I’m going to have to grab her and go today, we’re going to my friend’s for dinner tonight.” Ashley explained.
“Of course I understand, I’ll go and get her for you.” Jean bought back Daisy who was babbling away about her toy zebra, a new obsession of hers.
“Hello little monkey, have you been a good girl for Jean?” she whispered, taking her daughter and bouncing her on her hip, “We’re going to see uncle Harry, you like that don’t you poppet? Thank you again Jean, I’ll see you on Monday, have a good weekend.” Ashley said as she strapped Daisy into the buggy.
“You too love.”
After a stressful ordeal getting herself and Daisy ready for dinner at Harry’s, Ashley finally arrived at his North London home, Daisy in one arm babbling away, she rang the doorbell which was quickly answered by Harry who was wearing the same black shirt from earlier, with some jazzier yellow trousers. “Hello you two! Come on in,” He welcomed them over the threshold into the hallway that Ashley had always found intimidating, “How are you?”
“We’re good, but I won’t lie, getting this little madam dressed was stressful,” Ashley told him as she tickled  her under the chin.
“I like the pink of her dress, it matches the album cover,” Harry said smugly, pulling faces at Daisy who was clearly having a great time.
“No one’s seen the album cover yet Harry.” Ashley sighed.
“Yeah but it’s great for my natural narcissistic self,” Harry noticed Ashley struggling to take her coat off, “Do you want me to take her?” He asked, before Ashley handed her over, “Shall we go get your mummy a drink Princess Daisy?” Harry asked her as he carried her into the kitchen, Daisy babbling away to Harry, who Ashley had pretty much concluded was her favourite person. Ashley joined them in the kitchen where several people she recognised stood mingling, Lou, his hairstylist, was chatting with Gemma, Anne, Nick Grimshaw and Harry Lambert, people Ashley had met a handful of times. Jeff, Harry’s manager was talking to several people she assumed were from the record label. “Hiya love how are you?” Lou greeted her with a kind hug.
“Not bad, getting Daisy out of the house was a whole mission, I’m sure you know what I mean Lou.”
“Trust me, wait until she’s talking, she’ll want full control of her wardrobe choices.” Lou told her.
“How are things on the dark side Ash?” Nick asked, putting his arm around her shoulder.
“Bright and breezy, Roman sends his love,” The rivalry between Radio 1 and Capital went back years, both radio stations strived to be the number one station for young people, both had succeeded at various points in radio history.
Ashley glanced over at Harry who was holding Daisy whilst talking to his band, “Are you sure Daisy isn’t his?” Nick whispered, loud enough for Lou to hear.
“Positive, we haven’t even kissed Nick.” Ashley assured him.
Before Nick could question her anymore Harry shushed everyone to make a speech, Daisy sat comfortably in his arms, “Firstly, I would like to say thank you all for coming tonight, it means a lot to have my favourite people in one room, I am extremely grateful for you all, I’d like to thank Jeff and the label for all your support with the record, and of course my band for being wonderful people, Lou and Harry for keeping me looking half presentable. And of course mum and Gem, they say it takes a great woman to raise a great man, but in fact it took two, and I love you very much,” Ashley glanced over at Anne who was wiping tears from her cheeks, “And finally my bestest friend of all time, Ash, I feel like the luckiest man that I get to call you my best friend, we’ve grown up together, experiencing life together, and although our lives have taken very different paths, they seem to be running side by side, with the addition of this gorgeous little lady.”
“To Harry!” Nick cried, raising his glass in the air, everyone following his action.
The party had died down, pretty much everyone had left, except Gemma, Anne, Nick and Ashley who sat sprawled out on the large sofas in Harry’s front living room. Harry entered the room, passing around a bowl of crisps, admiring Daisy who had fallen asleep in Ashley’s arms, “I think we’re going to have to head home soon Haz.” Ashley whispered, “I’d rather get the tube before all the drunks get on it.”
“I’ll drive you if you like,” Harry offered.
“There are two flaws in that H, you’ve had several glasses of wine and champagne, and I don’t have Daisy’s car seat, we’ll be fine on the tube.”
“I’ll call you a cab.” Harry had always been quite protective of Ashley, but ever since Daisy was born he had been even more so.
“I promise we’ll be fine on the tube, if you are really that worried you can walk us to the station.”
And so he did, the pair strolled through the dimly lit streets of North London, Harry insisted on pushing Daisy’s buggy, Ashley held onto Harry’s arm, the warm fabric of his trench coat brushing against her cheek, “It meant a lot to me that you were there today love, both of you.” Harry told her, looking down at her with a gentle smile.
“I was so proud of you today Haz, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, Daisy adores you, you know that don’t you?” Ashley told him.
“I was proud of you too, seeing you at work for the first time, I can see why they gave you the job.”
“They gave me the job because I’m best friends with Harry Styles.” Ashley sighed.
“I don’t believe that, you were so at home in there Ash, you’ve found your thing.” Harry assured her as they approached the almost empty tube station.
“This is us.” Ashley whispered, taking Daisy’s buggy from Harry.
“Text me when you get home.” Harry instructed her, holding her close to his chest, not wanting to ever let go.
12th May 2017
“Hello rockstar.” Ashley said as Harry opened his front door to see his best friend stood on the doorstep, a big grin on both their faces, she had come straight from work to see him, knowing he would be anxious with all the interviews and meetings regarding the album. Jean being the angel she was had agreed to look after Daisy for the whole day, which made Ashley’s life a whole lot easier.
“So did you listen to it then?” Harry asked her as he led her through to the kitchen, taking two mugs from the cupboard and placing them on the counter before turning on the kettle.
“I did.” Ashley knew that holding off on telling Harry what she thought of his album was sure to make him squirm, as important the opinions of the label and critics were, Harry only ever seemed to care about what Ashley thought.
“And did you like it?” He asked.
“I cried, again.” she sighed.
“At which song?” He asked.
“All of it, the whole way through, my eyes were puffy when I got to work I think Roman thought something was wrong.”
“So which was your favourite song?”
“Now that is a tough one,” Ashley replied as he handed her the cup of tea, “I’m going to have to say sweet creature,”
“Good.” Harry smiled.
“The thing is I’ve known you for twelve years, and I can tell who pretty much all the songs are about.”
“Is that right?” Harry smirked, raising his eyebrows.
“Two Ghosts, well that's obviously Taylor, Only Angel is clearly about Kendall,” she told him, “One thing I did want to ask you was, you didn’t write Kiwi about me did you? You know, the whole I’m having your baby, it's none of your business thing.”
“No, that one’s fictional,” Harry assured her, before she could question him any further they were interrupted by a knock at the door, Harry disappeared to answer and a minute or so later returned with Jeff, “You’re worrying me Jeff, its not like you to arrive without warning.”
“It’s probably just as well you’re here Ashley, this involves you somewhat,” Jeff explained, “We should probably sit down,” He led them over to Harry’s large dining table, “The press have put two and two together and made twenty five.”
“Jeff what are you on about?” Harry asked, clearly baffled by Jeff’s spontaneous visit.
Jeff pulled out his laptop, opening it to reveal an article titled ‘SHE’S HAVING HIS BABY AND IT IS HIS BUSINESS’, under the heading there were pictures of Harry and Ashley from the release date of Sign of the Times, pictures of Harry pushing Daisy’s buggy whilst Ashley held onto his arm, and pictures of them hugging at the station, as the article continued there were pictures of Harry and Ashley going way back, they were insinuating that Harry’s public relationships had all been an elaborate cover up for his real relationship with Ashley, “So they think Harry is Daisy’s real dad?” Ashley whispered.
“It looks that way,” Jeff sighed “And for legal reasons I need to know whether she is Harry’s daughter or not.”
“Harry is not Daisy’s father, for fuck sake her father may as well have been a sperm donor, because thats how little involvement he has had in he life.”
“Do you need me to make a statement?” Harry asked.
“They’ll probably want a comment from you eventually, this will all blow over eventually, but Ashley you might find in the next few weeks that you get heightened press attention, butt don’t say anything to them they could use against you, and if they do anything to harm you or Daisy in any way tell Harry, and he can tell our legal team who will have that resolved for you.”
“Are you alright?” Harry asked Ashley as she stared out of his living room window, Jeff had gone and it was just the two of them left in the house.
“You would tell me wouldn’t you? If you had written a song about me?” Ashley asked, Harry shuffled on his feet, looking down at the floor, not wanting to engage in eye contact with Ashley, “What is it?” she asked him bluntly, she knew full well when Harry was hiding something.
“I haven’t been completely honest, there is a song on there about you.” Harry muttered, “when you said Sweet Creature was your favourite, I said good, because I wrote it for you.” Ashley stood in silence, not really knowing what to think, “You think that’s weird don’t you? I’m sorry, I should’ve asked if it was okay before I released it.”
“I don’t think it’s weird, I think it’s lovely, in a weird kind of way.” She assured him.
“A weird kind of lovely?”
“Exactly.”

You pretty much always have a cup of tea or a bottle of water with you. You think enjoying the moment is more important than catching it on camera. You enjoy watching documentaries. You spend most of your time alone and have no close relationships. You joined Pottermore and were sorted into Gryffindor. You have a dry and sarcastic sense of humour. Long, dark winter nights drain you. Summer is by far your favourite season and lifts your mood a lot. A lot of the time you have to laugh at your own bad luck. Your mood plummets if you don’t follow a health and fitness routine. Your favourite ever music video is Lana Del Rey’s Ride. You love lazy summers spent going for walks and lounging in the garden. You love to spend your time lost in a good book. You watch American Horror Story and Asylum is your favourite season so far. You’ve overcome a lot over the last year but have slipped up recently. Sunsets are one of your favourite things about the planet. You prefer to avoid medication but appreciate it’s necessity sometimes. You find talking to older people easier than talking to ones your own age. You’re naturally quiet and content with being that way. Your handwriting seems to change every time you pick up a pen. You dislike the thought of ever being dependent on anybody. Texting bores you and you’d rather just make a phone call. You like to hear about other people’s music tastes. You prefer to keep your living space clean and tidy. Anxiety controls you more than you’d like to admit. You can hardly even cope with being around people because of it. You can’t decide whether you prefer cities or countryside. You’re pretty much incapable of ever relaxing. You like discovering and being introduced to new music. Your favourite song by The Smiths is What Difference Does It Make. You procrastinate things you don’t feel capable of doing perfectly. You keep pretty much everything to yourself. Violet Holland (t.h)
Pairing: Dad!Tom Holland x Reader
Requested: Yes/No
Word Count: 1.9k
Warnings: none.
A/N: I have a three-year-old cousin who's obsessed with my little pony, she made me watch all seasons of the show and all the movies. I had to use that knowledge for something.
MASTERLIST //// PROMPT LIST
CHECK OUT MY NEW TOM SERIES!
Tumblr media
"What do you want for your birthday, baby?" Tom said scooting over to one side so his daughter could climb up to the bed.
"I don't know yet" she replied moving her long brown hair out of her face and sitting in front of her dad, her back against his chest. Tom ran his fingers through Violet's soft curly hair and began a French braid starting from the very top of her head
"Come on darling, there's got to be something you reeeeaaaally want" Tom stretched out the word as he tickled her sides, making loud giggles to leave her lips.
"I don't know, let me think..." she murmured as Tom continued to braid her hair. Once he finished he gave her a kiss on the cheek and she turned and sat next to him with her legs criss crossed.
She thought for a second, her lips puckered and brows furrowed, she tapped her lips with her index finger, a sign she was in deep thought
"I want the new My Little Pony dolls" she said a happy grin adorned her face
"Which one?" he asked sitting in the same position she was in
"All of them!" She yelled as she stood up and started jumping on the bed, her pink and white pyjamas seemed like a blur because of how fast she was jumping up and down.
Violet Holland had her father, Tom, wrapped around her little finger. After Violet's mother died he swore he'd do anything in his power to make her feel loved until the day he gave his last breath. That included spending endless nights watching My Little Pony and learning all the names and powers of each character.
"Darling I can't get all six of them, you know you've to pick just one" Tom said leaning against the headboard of Violet's bed, the six-year-old girl continued to jump up and down
"Five" she said, her breathing was fast and short but she didn't stop jumping
"Two" Tom stood up and tackled his daughter down to the bed, she laughed and finally sat down with her legs stretched
"Four" she continued to negotiate with her father, her little hands grabbed Tom's face as she placed a kiss on her dad's cheek.
"Three" it was that, or nothing.
"Deal." She said with a content smile, she gave him a toothy grin and threw her arms around his shoulders. "Thank you, daddy!"
"It's nothing, darling. But remember, this is only because of your birthday, this-" he said referring to the negotiation "will not happen all the time. Whatever you receive, you have to be grateful for it. Even if it's not exactly what you want. Got it?"
"Yes, daddy. I promise I'll be grateful for what I get. And even if I don't get anything, I'll be grateful because I'll have the best party ever!" She squealed in delight and started jumping on the bed again.
"Yes, you will, baby." He laughed as well. "Do you know who you want to invite to the party? Any friends at school?" Her loud giggles were replaced by a even louder gasp, and she stopped jumping abruptly.
"Daddy, I want to invite Miss (Y/N)!!!!" She said dropping on to her knees and wrapped her tiny arms around Tom's neck, her legs around his waist as she straddled him.
"Alright, do you want any of your classmates to come?" he asked playing with her hands at the back of his neck
"No. They only talk to me because they want to meet Spider-Man. Miss (Y/N) said that the people who talk to you because of what you have and not for who you are are not worth our time, but that we should not be mean to them even though what they're doing is wrong"
Tom's world stopped for a second.
This is what he feared the most when Violet started school. He feared that she wouldn't have a normal childhood because of him, because of who he was.
"Oh, baby" he whispered and held Violet close to his chest. The little girl started squirming under his arms struggling to set herself free
"Daddy, I can't breathe!" She giggled and Tom lessened his grip on the child and instead started tickling her sides.
----------
The next day Violet and Tom were walking hand in hand towards Violet's school.
"Daddy, I want to give the card to (Miss Y/N)" Violet said once they reached the door to her classroom. They arrived fifteen minutes before class started so they could have a chance to speak with Violet's favorite teacher.
25-year-old (Y/N) (Y/L/N) loved children. She was taught from a very young age to respect and love everyone, she was taught that everyone has a past that they cannot change. She was taught that kindness and love were the most important things in the world. Being a teacher wasn’t easy, especially to a group of fifteen six-year-old. She had to deal with parents who thought that with a little bit of money their child could get away with anything they did. She had to deal with the hypocrite parents who always denied teaching their child a bad word or bad behavior, yet they showed said behavior when speaking with her.
Violet Holland was her first celebrity child. And she was the sweetest thing (Y/N) had ever laid eyes on. (Y/N) noticed how sometimes, Violet would cling to her more than any of the other kids. And it broke her heart everytime the other kids would talk about what a lovely day they all had with their mothers, and Violet would fix her gaze on the floor, watching her little feet dangle from her chair, a frown forming on her delicate face.
The first time (Y/N) and Tom met she was informed of Violet’s home situation. Tom didn’t ask for special treatment, but he asked for privacy and confidentiality. She was informed about Violet's mum passing away just a few weeks after she was born, and Violet being touchy about the subject.
One particular kid, Maggie, was the #1 fan of making fun of Violet not having a mother.
Although Violet never mentioned it to her father, (Y/N) did notice it. And as soon as class was over she called Maggie and asked for a meeting with her parents. A five-day suspention was what Maggie received, besides a “no parties” punishment from her parents.
----------
You finished your first cup of coffee of the day just a soft knock on the door startled her.
“It’s open!” you said closing a notebook and heard tiny footsteps echoing in the empty room.
“Hi, Miss (Y/N)!” Violet’s cheery voice filled your ears and a smile automatically appeared on your face.
“Good morning, Vi. You’re early today.” you cooed as Violet walked towards you and hugged you tightly.
“She said she wanted to give you something” a male’s voice startled you. You looked to her door and saw Violet’s father standing there, wearing a white button down shirt, black pants and black shoes that looked shinier than a brand new car.
“Oh! Mr. Holland, I didn’t see you there, sorry” you muttered the words out standing up and walking towards him, giving him a handshake and a smile.
“Please, just call me Tom. I’m not that old yet” he said with a smirk and you both laughed.
“Yes you are, daddy” Violet chimed, still hugging your waist.
“Didn’t you have something for Miss (Y/N), monkey?” Tom asked narrowing his eyes making her giggle.
Violet hurriedly opened her green backpack and pulled out the pink invitation card.
“This is for you!” she cheered and you quickly scanned the card, a happy grin adorning your face.
“Violet! Thank you!” you crouched and hugged the child.
“It’s My Little Pony theme! And you don’t have to get me anything, but if you do, I really want the new Equestria Girls dolls” Violet giggled hiding behind Tom’s legs, hoping this would stop his father from scolding her.
“Vi! What did we talk about?” Tom picked his daughter up and held her in his arms, her tiny legs around his torso.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Holland. These new dolls are everything Violet talks about when we have lunch together” you smiled softly and saw a hint of blush creeping on Vi's cheeks.
“Miss (Y/N) is so cool, daddy! Every day while all the other kids are playing outside she stays with me inside and we eat and read books together”
“Really? That is very kind of you, Miss (Y/N), I’m sure you have other things to do during your breaks and-”
“Oh no, really. It’s not a burden. As much as I try to get the other kids involved, Violet is the only one who values a good story. You’re raising a brilliant child” you responded and Tom moved his gaze from his daughter to you. A small frown had formed on his face, but it went away as soon as he saw the sincere smile on your lips. He smiled as well, and suddenly he couldn't see anything else but you, he noticed the way your eyes would shine everytime you mentioned or talked to Violet. And he swore his heart was going to explode for how thankful he was that someone else loved his daughter as much as he did.
“Yeah, dad! I’m brilliant!” his little girl brought him back from his trance. He laughed, he didn't have a comeback, because he knew what Violet said was true.
-----------------
Violet's party came sooner than expected. Or at least that's what it felt like. Everyday before and after class, Violet would ask you if you were going to her party. And every day the answer was the same
"Yes, Violet. I'll be the first one to be there."
You loved seeing the way her eyes would brighten and her smile widened when she heard the words. The day before the party was no exception, after everyone left the room Violet skipped over to your desk and with a singy voice she asked again
"Miss (Y/N) are you coming to my party tomorrow?" The little girl said as she grabbed a nearby chair to help herself get up and sit on top of your desk, you would let her do that only when you both were alone and had something important to discuss.
Violet criss crossed her legs and placed her elbows on top of them, and rested her chin against both fists
"Yes, Vi. I'll be the first one there. And can I tell you a secret?" You whispered, leaning closer towards Violet whose eyes were wide and an expecting look took over her face.
Violet only nodded and leaned closer, moving her head so you could whispered in her ear
"A little birdy told me you really wanted the Equestria Girls dolls, and I got you your favorite one"
The look on Violet's face was priceless. Eyes wide, mouth open and a hint of blush showing on her cheeks. Violet gasped as you leaned back, a big smile forming on your lips when you saw Vi's reaction.
"You got me Pinkie Pie?" Violet asked and you nodded biting your lip. Her smile grew and she leaned to hug you. Her face buried in the crook of your neck. "Thank you, mummy"

There is something about Trixie Season Three
I always knew I would be back for this third instalment I just never realised what would have happened between 3x23 and finally reaching a deal with Netflix for Season 4. I literally lost over a month from my life and before you say anything, yes it was worth it.
There is something about Trixie Season 1
There is something about Trixie Season 2
3x01 - They're Back, Aren't They?
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x02 - The One with the Baby Carrot
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x03 - Mr. & Mrs. Mazikeen Smith
Tumblr media
The first time we see Trixie in Season 3 is ironically in an episode that was shot in Season Two and is part of the four standalones that irked the fans for not moving the storyline.
Trixie shows some great initiative by trying to smuggle herself to Canada and despite being overly worried for Maze, Miss Alien did manage to cross the boards and take part in the episode’s adventure... What also we need to remember is that Trixie was extremely happy that Miss alien was delivered back smeared with blood...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3x04 - What Would Lucifer Do?
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x05 - Welcome Back, Charlotte Richards
Tumblr media
In episode 3x05 we do realise that S3 will not be just about identity but also about accountability. In this episode, we also have the first real Season Three appearance of Trixie and apparently, the child’s proximity with Maze has brought some issues that are dealt with a Swear Jar...
In this episode, we cannot say we see anything out of the ordinary although the word Mother-flunker will always stay with us but we do realise that like Trixie, Lucifer has to learn that words to hurt people... pity he wasn’t there for that pep talk otherwise it might have saved us a whole season.
Now let’s move to the last scene with Trixie in the episode which holds some merit.
Chloe: Monkey, I want to talk to you about what happened today at school. Did you tell Miss Morgan to "go to shell"?
Trixie: I didn't technically break any rules.
Chloe: You know what? Lucifer was right. The swear jar, it's it's a dumb idea. Mommy gave you a bunch of rules without explaining things. The real reason that we shouldn't swear is that bad words make people feel bad. And I know you don't want to make people feel bad, right? 'Cause the truth is if you go looking for loopholes, you'll always find them. And I can't force you to do the right thing. You'll just have to learn that on your own. So no more swear jar. Does the above sound familiar to you?
Call me an overthinker as I know I am but take this as if spoken from Dad aka God. Lucifer was set to have certain rules but broke them and when they were reinforced he always sought for loopholes lie he did when he made a deal with Dad in 1x13 and Chloe was spared.
God couldn’t make him learn, good from wrong as Lucifer always found loopholes but instead He also took away the Swear Jar or in Lucifer’s case, Hell. God never got down to Earth to drag His son back to Hell but he enforced a plan that made Lucifer on some degree learn on his own but without God being an active participant to that. Lucifer has the choice on what to learn, accept and eventually act.
3x06 - Vegas with Some Radish
Trixie is not mentioned.
Many have noted where Trixie was in this episode and the truth is that Trixie could have returned to babysit or Chloe could have called a babysitter when she decided to stay with Linda at the penthouse. Contrary to popular belief parents sometimes do need a break from their children.
3x07 - Off the Record
Here we have the HILARIOUS: ‘Child in danger?’
Tumblr media
Then down the storyline, Daughter in Danger and Stolen From School...
Tumblr media
3x08 - Chloe Does Lucifer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That episode always cracks me up especially Trixie’s actions. Painting a unicorn on Lucifer’s cheek and of course being the adult in how Chloe should open a conversation of flirting with a man. For some reason, her maturity here is a bit too much but at the same time endearing. What she also realises is that the show at the end of the episode is missing.
The thimble as I mentioned earlier was a direct metaphor to Peter Pan’s thimble. The boy who refused to grow until he was forced to do just that. In 3x08 we do realise that although Lucifer refuses to grow up once again he knows that even by getting a Monopoly piece certain things will never be different because people might not change but heck they can pretend they have pretty well. Enter Trixie. In a way we see Lucifer and Trixie growing up and getting hurt together almost by the same people in Season Three. Namely Maze...
Tumblr media
3x09 - The Sinnerman
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x10 - The Sin Bin
Tumblr media
Many can say Lucifer is a proud Step-Satan but in this episode, more things come to play. Trixie not only meets Charlotte but she also sets a date between her and her Daddy aka Dan.
She is a perceptive child and for some reason a bit like Ella, although in a different way, she is attracted to the unusual and in her case to whatever has ascent from Hell...
Now like in 3x08 she offers sound advice on how adults should act but she is also offering a very good line to Charlotte: You’re the Mum, you make the rules!
Following 3x05, rules are made by the parents they cannot always be explained but that does not mean it’s out of spite. Sometimes it’s out of desperation or love so that concept alone wants me to keep a closer eye on our dear Beatrice...
3x11 - City of Angels?
Trixie is mentioned 1 time.
3x12 - All About Her
In this episode, we get to see that not only Trixie is obsessed with Miss Alien but also that she makes some good money from her art which reminds us that what she had drawn in Season 2. Uriel, the Devil and the Blade. In Season 3 in 3x12 we can see the first hint of that Amenadiel will get his wings back.
Tumblr media
For some reason, Trixie seems to know what is going to happen. Of course, we may say it’s but an easter egg from the production but speculating over a Miracle’s child is more fun don’t you think?
Tumblr media
3x13 - Til Death Do Us Part
Trixie is mentioned two times.
3x14 - My Brother's Keeper
Tumblr media
In this episode, we see how close Trixie and Maze have become to the point that Maze words in 3x18 cause a lot of damage. What interests me most though is not how close they are but what Trixie has been taught from Maze.
That kid now knows the basics of how to survive and of course battle tactics. Sometimes I do wonder if whatever passed down to Trixie from Lucifer and Maze will come to play in any f the future seasons.
Tumblr media
3x15 - High School Poppycock
Tumblr media
In 3x15 Trixie was used as a humorous addition to the story where Chloe stays up all night but we also witness the maturity of the child as well. She dresses herself and she got up and ready without waiting for her mother to do anything for her.
You may say that for her age that’s a given but like in 2x15 we see that Trixie has a very adult-like logic and in most cases, reaction to a lot of things. Unfortunately, like her mother, she also bottles up a lot of her feelings and refuses to let anyone realise how certain circumstances affect her until it’s too late. Do keep that in mind for both Trixie and Chloe in Season 4.
3x16 - Infernal Guinea Pig
Trixie is mentioned 1 time.
3x17 - Let Pinhead Sing!
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x18 - The Last Heartbreak
Tumblr media
In 3x18 the episode does affect Trixie but the most notable thing we see is how a little human girl can affect a Demon. Maze was always unyielding to emotion until Trixie came to her life. Like Chloe and Lucifer’s insistence to not be a shoe the same happened with Maze and Trixie.
Ten episodes later since 3x08 the same story plays again but this time in the subplot of the series. A character rejects its true nature for what they believe they are. Lucifer uses sex and enforces himself to act indifferent to Chloe and any remaining feelis from 3x06 while in 3x18 we see Maze trying to do the same. She acts out and her lashing out to Dan eventually reaches Trixie but more directly than Lucifer’s actions do reach Chloe.
3x19 - Orange Is the New Maze
Trixie is mentioned 3 times.
3x20 - The Angel of San Bernardino
Tumblr media
In 3x20, we see Trixie has mostly recovered from Maze’s harsh words and house abandonment. And yet in the following gif we do see that the child understand more than she is willing to admit which makes things a bit weird for my liking.
Tumblr media
Trixie appears to have known to a degree that Lucifer and her mother were close after her parents were separated and yet by the end of the episode she does not appear to hold any grudge against our Devil.
Tumblr media
And here is the thing Trixie is open to both her parents dating and being happy with other people and no matter what happens she always seems extremely loyal to Lucifer. Even in 3x08 she could see that Chloe and Lucifer  were good for each other and yet the fact hat she was there to care for her mother in that state troubled me, like a lot.
Tumblr media
3x21 - Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better
Tumblr media
Moving on to 3x21... Bottling up your feelings never ends well but in Trixie’s case, she just refuses to deal with the issue something that Chloe says it will take time. That alone gives us an opening on what might happen with the two characters in S4 but also poses a question that has not been explained so far. Why while Trixie was still mad with Maze, she accepted Marcus so easily after 3x20?
3x22 - All Hands on Decker
Tumblr media
When 3x22 was aired and that scene came into play I was convinced that Trixie had been taken from the sleepover and had not willingly left. That might be true if we consider that A) There was a deleted scene where Marcus and Maze had a fight in LUX’s bathroom and that Marcus knew he would need a shield afterwards. Do not forget that Marcus had a silver tongue and could persuade people quite easily in order to get what he wanted. So I do believe that Trixie was forced to return home in 3x22.
Tumblr media
3x22 was also the last time we saw the child as the last two episodes were too packed as season and midseason finale’s often are.
3x23 - Quintessential Deckerstar
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x24 - A Devil of My Word
Trixie is not mentioned.
3x25 - Boo Normal
Trixie is mentioned 1 time.
3x26 - Once Upon a Time
Trixie is not mentioned (aside from the lack of family in Dan’ s life) and does not exist.
Finally, I would like to add a thought concerning Trixie’s absence in 3x26 - Once Upon a Time.
Chloe was born as a miracle but God’s decision to make her cross paths with Lucifer was made when John Decker was murdered when she was 18 years old.
That means that Chloe’s Miracle status is not de facto the reason why Lucifer and Chloe were met.
Following that logic, Chloe’s future and Trixie’s existence is part of God’s plan which we can speculate that is based on Chloe meeting Lucifer. That means in an extent that Trixie has a role in Lucifer’s involvement with Chloe which we should witness at some point in the next season/s.
Why is that?
Because Trixie’s existence didn’t fit the original plan that had Chloe never meeting Lucifer meaning where God had no involvement, therefore, we can assume that Trixie is a product of God’s grand plan for Lucifer and Chloe on some degree.
If all the above is true then why did God blessed Penny and John?
Well, there are many different scenarios but I like to think that Penny’s infertility or difficulty to conceive had to do with a certain kind of ancestry* that made John and Penny incompatible and thus they needed a stronger angel, the Firstborn, to bless them. That’s, of course, a non-spoiler based speculation. We shall see I guess...
*That does not make Lucifer and Chloe related in any way. Lucifer in 3x01 has revealed that there are other celestial beings as well as supernatural beings that roam the Earth/Universe.
This is the end of There is something about Trixie Season Three.

~ T H R E E ~
Our Remy, today you turn three years old! Happy third lap around the sun our gorgeous boy. We have watched you grow for three years and are constantly in awe of you. Your creativity and imagination have grown as has your capacity for empathy. Watching you explore and learn has been the greatest gift. It has been our job to encourage and direct you and that job brings us nothing but happiness. You have learnt so many things this past year including riding your pedal bike without training wheels, starting the process of swimming without mum or dad in the pool with you, how to count to 14, using the toilet and so much more!
You loved daycare so much with Colleen that you started going two days a week. You've made new friends including Amaya, Bailey and Audrey and are lucky enough to still have Livvy hanging out with you both days. We love that you're learning so much through play both indoors and out and Colleen is so supportive of what you're interested in at different times. It's hard to get you to come home with us most days, you'd rather keep playing at daycare. You are loving swimming at the moment too and are almost ready to swim by yourself. You were getting frustrated at times before we stopped lessons for a few months because of corona virus but since you started back you have been so good with listening and following instructions.
Tumblr media
You still love books but have also been interested in puzzles and obstacle courses around the house. Your favourite thing to do at the moment is wrestle with Dad on the lounge room floor. We just have to remind you sometimes not to wrestle other children at the playground. You are super inquisitive and at times we play around and call you Mr Nosey because of the amount of questions you ask. We'll encourage you to keep doing it because you learn so much more wanting to know more about the world.
You now have 20 little teeth with one more coming through and have had your first trip to the dentist. You've grown so much, weighing in at 14.5kg and measuring 92cm tall! You have the most terrific memory and we love when you reminisce about adventures we have been on, it reinforces to us how our time together impacts you. You talk so much and are a pretty confident little man, not like your Mum was as a child. You are super friendly and often say hello to people who walk past you when you ride your bike. We are so proud of how you have mastered your pedal bike too, you were riding without training wheels but 2 and 3/4 and people often comment on how amazing you are on your bike. You are getting better at brushing yourself off now when you crash and jumping back on the bike to keep riding. The next step to master is the breaks. You have done a great job with toilet training. You can use the toilet pretty independently and wear big boy undies during the day.
Tumblr media
We went on a family holiday to Adelaide and Melbourne last December. You got to go on the big boat and were a superstar traveller in the car making it from Melbourne to Adelaide in one day! We visited the Adelaide Zoo where we got baby and daddy monkey. We went to some cool playgrounds on our way back to Melbourne where you had a sleep over with baby Nash and Courtnee and Toby while Mum and Dad went to the Elton John concert. We also spent some time with your cousin Evie and Uncle Kris and Aunty Bianca. I'm pretty sure you managed an ice cream most days we were away!
We went on a few camping trips and recently went to Cradle Mountain for the weekend as our last little getaway before your baby brother Freddie arrived. You love telling people how we saw Mount Roland on the way there and we were amazed you managed to walk most of the the way around Dove Lake yourself. Other highlights of yours were the shuttle bus in to Dove Lake, watching the bird steal Mum's sandwich and staying at the hotel.
You became a big brother last week and have adjusted so well. We think you knew in the lead up to Freddie's arrival that your world was about to be turned upside down. You have been so helpful and love giving your baby brother koala cuddles. You also want to pick out a special bunny for Freddie to keep him safe the way your special Mothy bunny keeps you safe. It's beautiful to see how gentle you are and we can see that you love Freddie so much already.
Tumblr media
Your favourite things are Mothy (always), LEGO, making racing cars and riding your bike. You like to take five friends with you to bed most nights (if not more). Your best friends are Mothy, Pen(guin), Sloth, Dinosaur and Turtle Burger. Every night you go to bed we talk about your day (and Mums and Dads day too). You climb in and say 'tell me about my day'. You told me off last week because I asked you about your day on the way home from daycare. You said 'thought we were going to talk about my day when Dad gets home, when I go to bed'. You can be quite direct with your demands and sometimes need to be reminded to use your manners but you are for the most part pretty good. Your favourite foods at the moment are tiger toast, porridge, spring rolls and cake. Your favourite movie is Turbo which is about a speed obsessed snail with an unusual dream to become the worlds greatest racer. You also like watching Ninja Turtles. When we ask you what you want to be when you grow up you say a nurse (just like Mum). You like going out for dinner specifically going to the pub for tea.
Tumblr media
You have recently had a fear of spiders but we have worked through that with going to the museum to look at spiders and a huntsman came to say hello to you at daycare. The universe must have known that you needed a friendly spider experience. You were super brave and let him climb on your back! Another couple of times you have been super brave were when you got your flu needle and didn't even cry! And when you climbed up the netting at Riverbend Park and went down the steep slide all by yourself! You are our little risk taker but you learn so much about yourself and your limits by doing so which is why we think you have such great confidence.
You are perfect Remy Joe, every moment we spend with you is a moment we'll treasure forever because time is going way too fast and you are growing up way too quickly! You continue to amaze us with your humour, kindness and vibrant personality. We are and always will be utterly obsessed with you. We love you more than anything, right up to the moon and back.
Love from Mum and Dad

Britain has an emigration problem. While we are obsessed with discussing the number of people coming into the country, we seem less bothered about the talent heading out of it. Meanwhile, the UK is losing some of its finest and funniest to America. And this isn’t just because the US is a bigger market to crack, but because there’s more opportunity – particularly if you’re a minority. Indeed, there’s a longstanding joke among black British entertainers that they’re all waiting for Lenny Henry to die to free up space for another dark face on TV. Perhaps a little perturbed by this, Henry has been critical of the lack of diversity at the BBC and warned that Britain is “haemorrhaging” black talent to the US.
Gina Yashere is a case in point. Born in east London to Nigerian parents, the 43-year-old comedian is now firmly ensconced Stateside. She has got an American girlfriend, a green card and a lovely house in Brooklyn where we’re chatting; a quintessentially New York brownstone with a front stoop and a bicycle chained outside. She also has a lot more primetime TV than she had back home.
Yashere began and built a successful comedy career in the UK, going from winning prestigious comedy contests to occasional appearances on The Lenny Henry Show and celebrity panel shows to headlining sold out gigs at the Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo. The next step would have been getting her own TV show, which only a handful of black British comedians have been able to do. Besides Henry, Richard Blackwood had a show from 1999-2001 and Stephen K Amos had a brief run in 2010. And now there’s 29-year-old Michaela Coel, the creator and star of the hilarious E4 series Chewing Gum. However, 10 years ago, Yashere found herself stuck, unable to take her career any further if she stayed in Britain.
“I’ve definitely had a lot more opportunities given to me in America,” Yashere says. “I’ve sold three comedy specials in America.” These were to heavy-hitting channels: her special Skinny B*tch aired on Showtime, for example, and she sold Ticking Boxes, an hour-long performance filmed at Brixton Academy, to NBC-owned Seeso. Meanwhile, says Yashere: “I’ve never had any of my specials aired anywhere on British TV. If I’d sat in England waiting for someone to give me a TV show, I’d still be there, being the token black face on Mock the Week. That, to me, is a slap in the face.”
Comedian Gina Yashere speaks to Hannah Pool about her career in the UK and the US, and how attitudes to black Africans have changed in Britain since the 1970s Listen
There’s still a glass ceiling for black comics in America, Yashere says, but “at least when you hit [it] in America, you’re a multimillionaire so it’s not so painful”. Yashere says she isn’t at multimillionaire status yet, but she’s getting there. She’s been working in the US for a decade now and is on the verge of becoming a household name, recently landing a correspondent gig on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah’s late-night news satire programme on Comedy Central. She made her inaugural appearance on the show in March with a segment called Ask the Brexpert.
Brexperting on The Daily Show is a long way away from Yashere’s first job out of school as a lift engineer. Her mum wanted her to have a “proper job”, Yashere says, rather than be a “clown”. It certainly doesn’t sound as if lift-engineering was much of a laugh. As a lone black woman on a building site of more than 2,000 white men, Yashere stuck out, and not in a good way. “I was more qualified than most of the guys I was working with, which they hated. I’d come into work and there’d be a banana skin stuck to my overalls or a picture of a monkey on my coat.”
Eventually, Yashere took voluntary redundancy and decided to spend a summer trying out standup before looking for another engineering job. That other job never happened because it turned out that she was pretty good at the whole comedy thing. Within six months of doing standup, she came second in the 1996 Hackney Empire New Act of the Year, one of the most important comedy contests in the UK. That got her an appearance on Jonathan Ross’s The Big Big Talent show, and things built from there.
Some of her early success, Yashere believes, was a result of her being different. “I wasn’t like every other comedian at the time because I was coming from a different perspective. I was an outsider looking in. And I was even different from all the other black comics on the scene because a lot of them were of Caribbean origin and a lot of their jokes were poking fun at Africans. So I got my first taste of success quite quickly just from being different. It was taking it to the next level that was difficult.”
Yashere’s comedy tends to revolve around being a fish out of water, the tensions inherent in being born in London but having Nigerian roots, or a black Brit in America. “I used to get criticisms like: ‘All she talks about is being black,’” Yashere says. “No, I don’t. I talk about me. The fact that I’m a black woman is what you’re seeing. When Peter Kay talks about his northern roots and his family, nobody goes: ‘Peter Kay, all he talks about is being northern.’ As far as they’re concerned, it’s just another aspect of white culture. But when black comics talk about our culture, then it’s like: ‘Ugh, her being black again.’”
Worse, Yashere is sometimes not black enough for her critics. “There was one Guardian reviewer [she pauses to give me an accusatory look] who said: ‘She doesn’t delve deep enough in to the African experience.’ I was like: ‘What the fuck are you talking about? I’m from London. I’m talking about my experiences of being London-born, but of Nigerian heritage. How deep do I need to delve?’”
In the US, Yashere came up against a different set of stereotypes: America’s view of Brits is definitely more John Oliver than Gina Yashere. “I’d come on stage and open my mouth and people would be like, ‘What the fuck is this?…w Who is this?’” Yashere says. “Most Americans don’t know there’s black people in England. They’re starting to know now with people like Idris [Elba] and [the singer] Estelle, and all the actors doing really well and the musicians, but when I came out here in 2007 they had no idea.”
Yashere first moved to the US to appear on a TV show called Last Comic Standing. She was given a two-year work visa, but she knew she was there for the long run. She put her house on the market, sold or gave away everything she owned, and moved to Los Angeles with just two suitcases to her name. Within a couple of months she became the first British comedian to appear on Def Comedy Jam, the enormously successful HBO series that launched the careers of Chris Tucker and Dave Chappelle. She also made regular appearances on The Tonight Show.
Despite these successes, it took a while to build up a reputation and to adjust to life in the US. There’s the chocolate for one thing. As Yashere says: “American chocolate is fucking disgusting.” As is the US healthcare system. Shortly after Yashere moved to LA, she ended up in hospital for a night because of a Lupus flare-up. “They tried to charge me $15,000 [£11,500],” she says. “I was like: ‘I didn’t have an operation. How can you justify this? $15,000!’ So, I called them up and said: ‘I’m not paying this. I’m not from here and I will get on a plane and disappear. Then I heard the woman typing away on her computer and she said: ‘OK, if you pay $4,000 today, that’s the end of it. I’m like: ‘Are you fucking serious? This whole thing’s a scam.’ So that was my first major wake-up call to life in America.”
Americans don’t just have different healthcare to Britain, they have different notions of what’s funny. However, Yashere says she hasn’t really had to adjust her material. “My sense of humour has always been quite in-your-face. I haven’t got that quintessential dry British humour, so my style fits in quite well.” However, she does find she has to explain things. “A lot of Americans have never been outside America. So if I’m doing something about Malaysia, say, I have to explain where Malaysia is and what the culture is before I go into the joke.”
What are her current jokes about? Do they focus on recent political events? She shrugs. “I talk about a myriad of things. I talk about Trump a bit, I talk about the travel ban, I talk about pissing myself at McDonald’s seven feet from the toilet. Yeah, I had an accident a few weeks ago. Basically anything that happens to me is new material. I went to a restaurant, drank half a litre of water, then tried to get home on the subway and wanted to get to the bathroom. Get to McDonald’s where you can’t go to the bathroom unless you buy a burger. So I pissed myself in the middle of McDonald’s. It’s the most embarrassing thing, but yet ...” But yet, whether it’s racism or restroom mishaps, everything is material. And if Yashere has anything to do with it then it’s material that will likely have you wetting yourself with laughter. Just, hopefully, not in a McDonald’s.
Gina Yashere: Laugh Riot 2.0 (Send in the Clown) is at the Underbelly festival, Southbank, London, 23-25 June

Day 28
Sat 1st Feb
Phil was nervous from the moment he woke up, don’t think he slept much, but we got ready and were collected at 8am. The bumpiness of the road meant that Phil shaking in fear was well hidden. We got to the centre to wait for the other rafters arriving from Kampala and Phil remained very quiet. So I found an African drum and began to perform a song about rafting for him. It went a bit like this
‘Today we will raft,
It will be so fun,
We will look daft,
Phil will do a dung’
It really was excellent. I’m not sure Phil agreed.
We had a rollex and banana with our coffees and Phil popped up the stairs to the loo (my song was accurate methinks).
He looked even more scared when he came back though, as the corridor to the loo had been lined with people rafting, with boats at right angles, people falling off, some people hanging onto the boat while its up in the air, others not managing to hold on...
‘I just want to get going now!’
Yeah he was uncomfortable.
I considered choreographing a quick dance to distract him but then everyone arrived so he put on his slightly braver face. Our guide did the briefing, which actually did make it sound a bit scary to be fair. Obviously I wasn’t scared. We got our life jackets and helmets sorted and headed off in the truck for the half hour journey to the river.
A load of kids were hanging out at the start point to see all the muzungus in their sexy rafting gear lol and we heading onto the Nile.
The first section was rather an anti-climax as we basically had to paddle along the flat river (paddling aches btw) for absolutely aaaaaaages. We were in a raft with two girls - English Lucy and Italian Christina - and we tried swapped sides to try and give our arms a break. This first bit was long and I began to wonder if we would ever reach the rapids. But then we were distracting by doing some practice safety drills - like falling into the flat river and holding onto the safety kayak, getting down low in the raft and holding onto the rope etc. Then soon enough, the first rapid was there. THANK GOODNESS my arms were ready for a break. And it was a Grade 5 rapid which is quite high apparently. Don’t know if its good to start on a high one or not but we didn’t have a massive amount of choice did we.
We watched the first group go over and waited in anticipation to see if they flipped over. The went down the first mini rapid, no flip, approached the 2nd big one and then....they got completely stuck on the rocks. They all started to sort of bum shuffle bounce to try and move their boat and it was not working at all and they looked ridiculous. Phil was still too nervous to laugh but I was laughing my head off.
Took them ages to get moving and their guide had to get OUT to move them in the end lol.
We followed afterwards and it was actually awesome, we didn’t get stuck plus we managed to stay in the boat. As soon as this first rapid was done, Phil was totally fine and began to really enjoy it. Yay! We agreed as a group to do the ‘crazy’ rapids instead of the ‘easy’ ones from then on and had a great time. Sometimes the boat flipped but there were loads of safety kayakers ready to help if need be. We reached a Grade 6 rapid called Itanda Falls but got out to walk round it as it was too high a grade. I’ll tell you what, that was fine by me, cos I looked back at the rapids and they were MENTAL. The kayakers casually went straight down of course. There were loads of people around as the festival was going on there with people rafting and kayaking for the judges - maybe next year eh.
They gave us pineapple and biscuits as a snack while we were on a flat part (sensible) and then just before the final rapid, we stopped at a wave that allowed us to do body boarding. It was tricky to kick your feet and go into the wave at the correct angle, as you then had to sort of enter the wave and fall into it to find the sweet spot to surf in. I gave it a go while everyone watched on and pushed the front of the board down, which immediately turned me over and washed me away. FAIL.
Watching everyone trying really hard to do it but failing or flipping was so funny and the local guys were loving it. But the legend that is Phil nailed it straight away, first go. ATHLETE ALERT🚨. And he sat in this wave, casually body boarding for about 10 minutes. At one point he pretended he was having a beer and smoking a cigerette. I half wanted to punch him and half felt proud. Meanwhile, I was gearing up for another go and THANK FOOK I just about managed to do it. Woop woop. I definitely looked ridiculous trying, but at least I did manage to do it. I managed to stay there for at least 15 seconds too...😬
We all gearing up on the boats ready for the final rapid and agreed to go for the crazy option. We were feeling brave and comfortable. We watched as the other group disappeared on a rapid and flipped over - eek - and then we went for it. Our guide told us to try and hold onto the rope if possible but I had not managed that on any single rapid so far, so did not expect to this time. The rope was so tightly attached to the boat so it kinda hurt to hold it to be honest. Wasn’t too worried about it though.
Well, in hindsight, I think I should have tried a little harder.
We flipped on a huuuuuuuge rapid and I ended up letting go of the rope and then went under a huge wave for like I duno 10 seconds. Felt like longer but actually probably wasn’t. I had taken a large breath just before but as I tumbled around in this wave, looking around for the surface, I was like Uhh ok now can I just come up now. And THEN I became aware that I could feel my shorts being pulled down my legs by the waves. I couldn’t do anything to stop it and at that point, I was a little preoccupied trying to stay alive, but I eventually came up to the surface (big up life jackets) and felt around my legs and yes - my shorts had come completely off and WERE GONE, having been eaten up by the Nile never to be seen again.
Mum - I have to tell you now - they were the black and white shorts you gave me (ok maybe I stole them from you) and I am pretty gutted about it and apologise profusely.
On surfacing, I could see my paddle in front of me floating around manically and become overly obsessed with trying to reach it while also trying to avoid more big waves and trying to breathe. Somehow managed to reach it then looked back to see a smiling Phil in the distance holding onto the boat still. How on earth he managed to hold on I have no idea, but his hands were pretty raw from the effort. I think he got the better end of the deal though from the happy look on his face.
Christina from our boat came up from a rapid tumble and did not look happy at all, her ear had filled with water and she was a little shaken I think. The kayak guy told her to hold onto his kayak and told me to swim to the final point. Wasn’t sure whether I was flattered or disappointed but I guess I looked in a slightly more capable state then her.
At our final point, we were taken to a shelter with great view of the Nile (yes I had to walk there with no shorts on) and there was a lunch ready for us. Luckily my change of clothes was there. Some young kids were playing up a tree like little monkeys, comfortably shifting from branch to branch giggling as we pretended we were going to tickle their feet. SO CUTE.
Lunch was a salad sandwich and tomato pasta and as much beer as you wanted. They continued this rule on the hour drive back to the base house and we stood on the seats in the van with our heads out the top, sipping on beers, drying our clothes and hair. The Ugandans were giving us beer after beer, then they happily pulled over at the side of the road for our ‘pee stop’.
I mean, there was no loo in sight and I’m fairly certain I flashed my bum to quite a few passing drivers but whatever. The annoying thing was we arrived at our destination like 10 minutes after that so I definitely could have waited. It was almost like they did it on purpose for lols...
We looked at our rafting photos - wow life jackets & helmets 👌🏼 coming to catwalk near you - and headed back to the campsite for the big kayak festival party.
First we had some drinks at our hotel and chatted to some yanks and Jimi & Winfred, plus the guys from our rafting, then we headed to the party next door at NRE which was 10k each to get in. However, as soon as we got there, we realised that the bag we’d bought with us was super annoying to carry and we wanted to get rid of it.
I offered to take it back to the room, but Phil was like ‘No not on your own’.
This was kind of annoying, as I do need to be able to do certain things on my OWN, ya know, like in normal life - and this particular task felt like one of them that should have been fine.
But Phil had drunk quite a few beers by now, and to be honest so had I, so after trying to argue subtlety & quietly between ourselves for a few minutes (looking back, I don’t think we succeeded) we BOTH walked back to get rid of this bloody bag.
The argument escalated as we walked (I don’t think Phil’s disappearing act the day before helped considering he was gone without a trace for 2.5 hours and I wasn’t even allowed to go for 2 minutes) and by the time we got back to the tent I decided I’d rather stay in. To my surprise, Phil immediately got into bed and lay down and I realised that he was drunker than I’d realised and also knackered from the previous nights sleep filled with rafting nightmares. He looked very sleepy and I got a sudden wave of energy. So I told him that actually, if he was going to bed then I wanted to go to the party.
Well, his fears and anxieties about me doing things alone seemed to melt away and he just went straight to sleep.
So I went back to the party with so much speed and enthusiasm that I FELL OVER ON THE WAY (my knee took the brunt of it) and I walked in as the JELLY WRESTLING IN A RAFT was mid-flow. It was winner stays on and one girl was on her 5th competitor #girlpower - the target being to get the sock off the other person - and she whipped the sock off this middle aged bloke in his boxers within about 30 seconds. She roared like a lion as she thrust the sock into the air and the crowd went wild.
I found Jimi & Winfred and explained that Phil was tired and drunk and wanted to stay in bed. Jimi was particularly disappointed so asked if he should go and get him.
I figured why not, this was a great party after all, so he walked over to try and convince Phil to come out.
He came back 10 minutes later having been stopped by the security team, as local people (black people) were not allowed to walk around the camp site as they were assumed to be non-guests.
I offered to go back with him, starting to feel a little guilty Phil was missing all the fun, and as we walked in the dark towards our tent, a bush nearby started to move. We stood still - then one of the security guards with a GUN emerged. He’d been completely camouflaged and hidden from view awaiting trespassers. It was quite the hiding place.
I assured him that Jimi was with me and we went to the tent. With a bead of sweat on my brow.
But the tent was locked!
That surely meant only one thing - that Phil was on his way to the party!
Great news I thought, he’s got himself up, awesome!
As we walked off, Jimi paused and asked me if I had definitely got the right tent.
Hmm that was a good question.
Turned out, on second inspection, that I had not got the right tent and there was Phil snoring away.
We gently woke him up and tried to ask if he wanted to join the party. His response was difficult to translate and he was just too sleepy and boozy. He then said (I think?) he wanted to stay in bed - so we gave up and went back.
Don’t drink kids, alcohol is a mugs game...
It was a full on party and I have to say I had a wicked night, loads of tunes blasting, so many people, crazy dancing on tables - one group actually broke a table while dancing on it - and I eventually went to bed at 3am with tired legs after a long day. Also managed to have a few more chats with Jimi about gay people and tried to educate him on how it was normal and no problem. I tried a new angle on it as everyone here is religious, and said if God is love and God loves love then love is only ever a good thing love. Statistically if you say the word love at least 5 times in as many seconds, the person you’re talking too is more likely to agree with you.
Ok so I’m not sure if it worked but worth a try.
Jimi and Winfred insisted on walking me back to the camp and I decided not to argue with them about my independence on that occasion 😃 In my drunken wisdom, I then agreed with Jimi that Phil and I would join him the next day for the football coaching he’d told us about. It sounded like a good way to spend a Sunday. Though a plan to meet at 9am was perhaps a little ambitious...like I said, alcohol is definitely a mugs game.

You prefer sitting exams to completing coursework. You love long car journeys spent listening to music. You find learning about how people lived in the past interesting. Your parent’s closed-minded attitudes frustrate you. You’ve grown very used to loneliness. You prefer getting up early and having productive mornings. You try to enjoy dancing in public but you still feel very awkward. You can’t even be bothered to hold grudges and find them pointless. Winona Ryder is one of your favourite actresses. You don’t find award shows very interesting. You have no patience for people who are glued to their phones. You’re a bit of a hypochondriac. You enjoy warm evenings spent doing yoga in the garden. Sunsets are one of your favourite things about the planet. You prefer to avoid medication but appreciate it’s necessary sometimes. You have quite a temper but you’re good at controlling it. You much prefer skirts and dresses to jeans. You’re not really a fan of alcohol anymore. Your parents let you down when you needed them the most. You have a pretty awful relationship with your mum and it upsets you. You dream of finding a sense of belonging somewhere. You’re a fan of The Cure. You love doing toning exercises, especially stomach workouts. Patience is definitely not a trait of yours. You don’t expect anybody to take an interest in you or be there for you. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is one of your favourite albums. You’re a university student. You waste too much time on Tumblr and the internet in general. You’re an Arctic Monkeys fan. You’ve read and loved The Outsiders by S.E Hinton.
