little proud moment because one year ago turning a blue nightmare like the BB makeout scene into THIS would have been absolutely impossible for me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm sure a lot of people did it better before but damn i was shocked at myself when i checked the file one last time before archiving it and noticed the difference. guess i had never fully realized how much work all of us gifmakers put into gif coloring before i could sense the drastic difference in my own work.
and thinking of how i couldn't have achieved this result this fast without the many tutorials i've read and incorporated into my own coloring process i feel so grateful for the gifmakers of tumblr, i've honestly never talked to one who wasn't willing to kindly share their knowledge. whether it's with tutorials or simple advices thrown here and there this community is really so helpful and i love it soooo much!

Hi!
I sent this ask to the UserGif blog and they directed me to you. I was wondering how you created this black widow layout set:
https://www.tumblr.com/usergif/709701351905624064/black-widow-2021-dir-cate-shortland-insp
The layout is so cool and creative, I love it so much.
Thanks in advance!
hey! first off, thank you so much i really appreciate it.
now i will attempt to explain it, but i am never the best at these things so if you have any questions, feel free to ask! (all this is assuming everyone has a basic knowledge of gifmaking etc.) we're going to recreate a gif from my original set here.
FIRSTLY, you need your basic layout, now i used the rectangle shape tool to create the space for the big gif, and the little palette boxes, and fill them black so you can see them easily and move them around until i'm happy with the layout. and then move onto my text, the posters i was originally inspired by on etsy no longer seem to be there but the font i used which i *think* is what was used on those (as i wanted to get as close to my insp source as possible) is Nimbus Sans L for the title in bold, and Nimbus Sans Rounded for the rest (semi bold for the director and the genre/date and italic for the starring actors) and once i perfected the layout, and added a white layer for the background i saved that as a psd for future use. (make sure you're in timeline mode, and that the frame rate of this canvas is 23.976 fps - as that'll stop any issues when creating the whole gif.)
Tumblr media
from here, you're free to gif make your first gif as normal, colouring it and putting it all together in a smart object so then you're ready to just paste it into this canvas, clipping it over the big rectangle, resizing as needed and then sharpening. (if you're unsure about clipping masks - this gifset relies on them - there's a handy tutorial here!)
Tumblr media
so, here's how it looks with the main gif in place, and i've filled in my movie details for the film i've picked (i try to keep my layers as organised as possible so i recommend labelling things so you know exactly which text layer is which) i put all the text layers in a folder, and make a folder for all the palette rectangle boxes too.
next is the fun bit, or at least it is for me (personally i like to zoom in for this bit) but it's time to colour pick for the palette. before you do this make a new layer for each palette and clip one to each of the palette boxes like below.
Tumblr media
like i said, i like to zoom in for this, but select the eyedropper tool, and start picking your colours, i try to do it in a gradient, usually starting with either the brightest or darkest colour etc. for this gif i want to go from browny red to blue. once you pick your first colour, go to the layer clipped to the rectangle you want that colour and fill it with your colour. keep repeating this process until all your colours are picked and you're happy with your palette.
Tumblr media
and here is what you're left with. so now, just do what you'd usually do when saving your gifs, i personally put everything back into frames, so i can save with a timing of 0.05. and then repeat for each gif until you've got a beautiful gifset that you love!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i hope this made sense, and is easy enough to follow! sorry if it's a bit rambling and ridiculous, me and explaining things are not compatible.

Hi there! I saw the screen recording you did for the Aemond gifset (superb work, by the way) and I was wondering if you would be open into doing a step-by-step tutorial on how you played with the colors (what was the graph on the right side of the window?) and how you manipulated the color palette when saving the gifs? No pressure! Was just curious :) Thank you!
Hi there, nonny! Step by step below the cut here.
I don't keep the psd files of my gifs, mostly because I don't have the storage space to do that, so I've made a different gifset of the same scene, so it should be much the same, if not better.
I believe this:
Tumblr media
is the graph you were asking about? This is the histogram. I don't believe it has any practical usage in gifmaking. If any other gifmaker here has a different opinion, please share it. (I'm doing a photography degree, photoshop is my next unit so I'll know more about it soon)
Right, step by step. Hold your horses, this is long:
Step 1: get the clip. Some gifmakers use screen caps to make gifs. I do not know how to make them or how to use them and I find my own method works. If another gifmaker could add on how you make your screen caps, and if it is better than my own method, please add it. 😊
Where you get the clip from is a question. YouTube, somewhere else... as long as it's saved as a MP4 file on you computer/laptop, it doesn't matter. What does matter is the quality of your clips. A lot of people use 4K (super high quality) clips. I find those to be slow and arduous and may have been responsible for the fall of my old, decrepit laptop. HD or UHD are likely enough for some decent quality.
Step 2: Get the clip in the software (I use Adobe Photoshop. For some softwares, you might have to clip the clip i.e. make it shorter before just dumping it in) In Photoshop go to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers and a window will come up. Move the sliders until you have approximately what you want (don't worry about being exact. Just as long as you have what you need.) (Don't forget to click Limit to every 2 frames)
Tumblr media
Step 3: Once the clip has opened and your ready to start, crop out any black/white edges. Then cut out the frames you don't want
Tumblr media
Step 4: We are now ready to begin editing!! 🥳🥳🥳 Editing tends to just be a huge pile of trial and error. I have an order to things, but I often have to go back and adjust my first layers later.
I like to start with the Brightness/Contrast, for obvious reasons (I like to SEE what I'm doing *cough cough* HBO *cough cough*
The I adjust the Hue/Saturation, where I reduce the saturation of each individual colour. That reduction tends to be useful when I make further adjustments in effort to 'fix' as much of the shit colour grading as I can.
The next step is a combination of a Photo Filter (set to the default warming filter) and a Vibrance adjustment layer.
Next the where most of the magic happens. The Colour Balance allows me to adjust the colours in the shadows, midtones and highlights. The aim of this is to attempt to restore some colour. It can look a little weird when editing.
Finally is the Levels. This is a final brightness edit where I add most of my contrast.
Video featuring both sets here. Pause as needed to see the adjustments
Then, change the frame delay to 0.1, or whatever suits your fancy, but 0.1 is the most natural. Then, Click the button in the bottom left corner of the timeline which Converts to Video Timeline, then select all the layers, right click and Convert for Smart Filters.
After this is sharpening, cropping and then exporting. Either File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) or Alt + Shift + Ctrl + S
Here I change the size. (Usually adjust the height to 540px. Width depends on how I've cropped it. I my source clip excluding black edges was in the ratio 16:9, 540px is usually half that)
If you are uploading gifs to Tumblr, keep an eye of the file size. Tumblr doesn't allow for file sizes about 10MB, although for me it's always been more like 9.5MB. If that number is too high and you have made the gif as short as possible (no more the 50 frames if possible) and you have reduced the size (my limit tends to be about 480px height dependant on my crop ratio), then you change the number of the colours from 256 to NO LESS THAN 200. (lower than this may considerably reduce your quality)
Then you press Undo or Ctrl + Z a few times until you have all of your frames again and then repeat.
And all that can take half an hour or more. Hope this answers the question as well.

2023 gifmaker/cc wrapped!
i feel incredibly honored that @taee tagged me to pick my top 10 creations of the year, since i only started giffing right at the very end of 2023!! either that or i'm ridiculous and already have enough gifsets to participate with LOL but here we go!
my very first gif (back from a years' long hiatus): NUGGET TIME
it's nothing special but the most special one at the same time. learning an entirely new technique to do this craft with. had a silly time. i don't even hate the coloring!
bread cheeks on live: taehyung wlive 231116
livestream coloring is so hard and i haven't attempted it since lol but i also experienced an Impulse to gif the moment these few frames happened in real time... that's love.
like a dream: xdinary heroes for singles magazine
this one did not garner many notes at all but it was fun for me to experiment with a style of coloring i wouldn't typically go for. i've always leaned more vibrant but matte is so pretty 💖
do NOT mess with han hyeongjun!
a lot of giffing milestones were had with this one. paralleling, blurring logos, blurring moving captions... so i'm very happy this gained some actual traction (for the villain fandom on tumblr i mean; small community lol).
cuddly photofolio yoongi
my first set to reach a pretty sizable about of engagement! it's one of my favorite yoongi looks and also tested me in terms of matching colorings.
funky lil guy jooyeon
such a fun fancam to gif mainly because of the coloring! it feels like a fluke but sometimes those kinds of artistic adventures are best.
seokjin birthday set :3
on the flip side, this is the completely opposite of the set above because the agony...of coloring... IT WAS FELT. yet i'm so proud of how everything turned out. the subsequent tae gifset went so well because of all the trial and error here!
xdinary heroes on an infectious groove...
this one was borne out of me playing around with some techniques i'd been practicing! just figuring ps out on my own that's my favorite way to learn the program.
casscool gaon #2
vibrancy girlie strikes in full force here lol - this is probably my ideal coloring style. plus it's plain fun watching him perform and getting to make stuff from that. kwak jiseok the rock star that you are!!
people pt. 2 aesthetics
and finally, this conceptual style of giffing is something i want to come back to in the future. i've always greatly admired people who can do "faceless" pieces and i want to try more of it!
tagging @woozis @raplinenthusiasts @agustd3 @nohshinwoos @starcatching and anyone else who wants to do this!

wow your fellow travelers gifs are just beautiful. do you have any tips on working with the heavy yellow tint? it's so ugly but i don't know how to get rid of it. 😭
thank you so much nonnie! i too loathe the yellow/golden filter on so many scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
trying to neutralize coloring it is somewhat new to me but i have a few tips and several tutorials to share!
first, i always recommend making minor adjustments using several layers instead of drastic changes in a single adjustment. for the above scene, i used 26 adjustment layers on tim's gifs. it's time consuming but i like having the ability to turn off one adjustment layer at a time if i feel i've gotten off track.
always keep skin tone in mind, especially if your scene(s) include characters of color. be careful not to go too far when removing color and end up white- or color-washing your subjects.
next, for darker scenes i try to work with brightness adjustments first, then focus on color. my reasoning is that some brightness adjustments (such as curves) can also help with coloring. also, i've found that i tend to over-brighten if i'm trying to work on brightness and color at the same time. on a related note, sometimes you have to embrace the scene for what it is. in the above example, i felt like it was important to respect the intent of the scene and leave tim and hawk's faces partially obscured in darkness, only lit by the golden street lamps and the light from tim's building.
finally, take your time and practice! i have scrapped more than one set out of frustration but even if i never go back to it, i've learned something in the process that i can put to use on my next attempt. and when i'm really stumped, i ask for help! there are a lot of talented gifmakers out there with a lot more knowledge than i have, and who are lovely and kind and oh so helpful.
next, some links!
channel mixer 101 -- in-depth and a must read imo working with dark/indoor scenes with yellow tint using channel mixer on heavily tinted scenes hella's coloring tutorial
i'm sure there are many other tutorials on the subject but these are my go-to references. i hope this helps nonnie!

could you make a detailed tutorial on how you do your big gifs, specifically the hotd ones? i struggle a lot with coloring cause everything is so grainy and dark. i have every episode in 1080p but the quality just doesn't seem to be that good once it's giffed
hi anon!
i have a comprehensive tutorial of sorts in the works, but i have, uh, absolutely no idea when it will be done. that said, i do have some tips/example psds i'm happy to share right now ✨
basic tips
to start off: my giffing process is the same no matter the size of the gifs. i use the process outlined in tay's incredible tutorial, so just follow that if you want to do exactly what i'm doing
always gif from 1080p or higher (i’m using 1080p here)
use the "load files into stack" method (see tutorial above) instead of "import video frames to layers"; this will give you much clearer, crisper gifs
crop once and do not attempt to resize once you have cropped; resizing/recropping will introduce a lot of fuzz
coloring tips
some caveats! coloring is hard, yo, and there are a million different way to go about it. the best (and least immediately helpful) advice i can give you is honestly to just screw around and figure out exactly what each adjustment option does—curves, exposure, levels, channel mixer, etc.—and start piecing together your own style
when it comes to "grainy" gifs, there are gifs with film grain and gifs that are noisy/fuzzy. hq footage will have film grain, and lightening aggressively tends to highlight that. if you're worried about noisy or fuzzy gifs, "files into stack" and cropping only once should help minimize those issues
also, hbo hates gifmakers. got and hotd are both straight up nightmares to color, so if you feel like you're struggling, just know that everyone is struggling :/
lighten first: i usually try one or two curves layers first to see if i like what the rgb "auto" option gives me. if i don't, i move on to exposure and adjust using that tool
darken the blacks: it sounds counterintuitive, but as you lighten the scene, you need to make sure you're not washing it out as well. darken blacks using selective color or increase contrast using levels (or both)
adjust colors: hotd is hideously yellow a lot of the time, so channel mixer is your friend here. i typically increase the green slider in the blue output channel and then fine tune by decreasing yellows in selective color. if i'm still struggling, i'll go to hue/saturation and adjust the yellows there
smooth artifacts: artifacts are blocky sections that don't match the coloring on the rest of the gif. do your best to correct them by adjusting in selective color or by cheating and applying a black and white gradient map over the gif— set the blend mode to color and reduce the opacity to around 10-20% to smooth out some of the artifacts
duplicate + blur: if you're really struggling with excessive fuzziness/artifacts, you can duplicate your base gif directly on top of the original, add gaussian blur at 3.5, and set the opacity to somewhere between 10-25% to smooth out the mess. be aware that this will increase your overall file size
adjust export settings: i use "diffusion" exclusively, but that's a personal preference. some people think "pattern" looks cleaner, and sometimes it can help reduce noise
and finally, here's a selection of psds i've used for hotd scenes:
psd #1
Tumblr media
psd #2
Tumblr media
psd #3
Tumblr media
psd #4
Tumblr media
there you go! these psds should give you a pretty good look at how i color, but feel free to send me another ask if you any more questions or want tips on coloring a particular scene!
good luck!

Tagged by @sighonaraa !! <3
Are you named after anyone? - my birth name included one name for a great grandmother and the other for a member of royalty (:/). as for gert. well. that's a whole saga, but it boils down to "assigned gert by obituary writer". i guess i kinda was named after gert/marion?
When was the last time you cried? - like properly cried? a few weeks before finals. total breakdown, long story. not finals related, weirdly. but if you just mean like tearing up i tear up any time i really start laughing so probably yesterday?
Do you have kids? - absolutely not
Do you use sarcasm a lot?- do i use sarcasm? 🤨
What's the first you notice about people? - you know, i'm not sure. probably how they talk? but if you mean physically, maybe like. hair? or just, whatever is noticeable about them idk
What's your eye colour?- greyish
Scary movies or happy endings? - happy endings!
Any special talents? - i like to think i've got a decent singing voice. but really, my main and only talent is writing <3 and, of course, the gift of gab
Where were you born? - the us of a
What are your hobbies? - video games (both the playing of and dissecting of), writing for fun and profit, art/drawing (badly) particularly with graphite and oil pastel, gifmaking
Have you got any pets? - sort of? i live with a cat but she is technically my brother's. but even if i'm not the one who buys her food i have to put up with her (affectionate) a lot
What sports do you play/have you played? - lmao i was the "always picked last bc i was a skinny little loser" kid. the closest i've come is being decent at capture the cone as a kid in pe, and that was also bc tiny me was a little maniac who was actively attempting psychological warfare during the capture the cone,
How tall are you? - like. somewhere between 5'2 and 5'4? havent' checked recently, genuinely not sure. but it's in that range. probably 5'3 or 4?
Favourite subject in school? - english, probably. i've also always enjoyed mythology if you wanna get more specific. and theatre! i love theatre
Dream job? - hmmm. well dream job would be some form of creator--a video game designer, an author, an artist, or even an actor (perhaps on stage!), but like, in a "im making enough to live, and im kinda famous but not Too famous" way, but barring that, possibly a college professor or a librarian at a university? or maybe an editor or something along those lines? i'm pretty comfortable in academic spaces--or as comfortable as i'm ever going to be--and i enjoy a lot of the things those types of jobs would involve.
Tagging: hmmm @casismybestfriend @eryaforsthye @peachygos @mvshortcut @mysteriouseggsbenedict @sqenthusiast @kar-krashew @vamplanaut @thehouseofgrey @normal-thoughts-official @despite-everything @bahoreal @goyeeahaw @ragecndybars @rngaredead

So after Tumblr finally allowed me to post my recent santhony gifset, I want to take a moment to give myself a short pat on the shoulder here and celebrate my gif-making process^^
I always wanted to learn how to make gifs, but I just never had the patience nor a good program to work with. A bit more than a year ago, I saw a post mentioning photopea as a great alternative to photoshop – and as I always wanted to create gifs, I decided to look up some tutorials on how to make gifs with photopea. My first attempts weren’t that great, but I’m glad that I still chose to share most of my gifs - because now I can look back at them and see the process I made, plus I still received a lot of love on my older gifs.
At the same time, I started watching Bridgerton – and as I became obsessed with that show, I used it to practice my gifmaking skills.
Recently, I saw someone like a gifset I made of that scene where Anthony asks Siena to go to the ball with him. When I first started creating gifs, I often made several gifsets in one day and then just scheduled them – which meant that by the time I opened photopea again, I basically forgot how everything worked lol. But the past months I’ve made gifs more regularly and as I felt that I’ve definitely improved, I thought I could redo that santhony gifset again.
So here’s the same shot from my first attempt a year ago, and below my most recent gif.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love how smooth the new one looks. I’ve never been a fan of grainy gifs, but I often had to use a noise-filter to make the quality appear somewhat better. I’m glad I found a way to make them look less pixelated but not super grainy either.
Also adore the difference in coloring. The second one looks way richer and warmer. I’m not sure whether I even colored the first gif tbh. I was super careful with coloring and lighting in the beginning, because I didn’t want the gifs to look too saturated. And making them too bright usually just showed how awful the quality was lol
So yeah, I’m really happy with the process I made. Also, I feel like learning to create gifs made me appreciate gif-makers more. I mean, I was always impressed by it, but I also always assumed that once they learned how to do it, it must be quite easy – now I know that every gifset is its own struggle lmao
So that’s also a good reminder to always show support to your favorite gifmakers (and gifmakers in general, of course). And if anyone read all that and also always wanted to make gifs: just give it a shot and keep practicing. I’m so glad I gave this a try – not only because I always wanted to, but also because this is just so much fun :D

L, N and P for the fandom meme, my dear 😊
Thank you, dear! 💙
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)
All right, let’s go with Kitty for this one. One aspect of her character I genuinely like is her interest in weird, gory things. I think the moment she became fascinated with Maddocks’s foot (or lack thereof) was the first time I could truly relate to her. That could have been me, 100 %, and I’m sure everyone around me reacted the way the other ghosts did when I told them about that one time I dissected mummified bat skulls under a microscope. So yeah, I love this part of Kitty's character.
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)
1. More positivity rather than discourse. Every now and then people post about ships or characters they dislike, and I just wish rather than complaining about why there’s so much content for them, they’d use that energy to support the creators who actually make the content they want to see. There’s no better way to encourage a writer / artist / gifmaker than to leave them feedback. Which brings me to point 2.
2. More interaction with fics, art and gifsets. Likes are all well and good but it's reblogs that get works seen and comments that motivate creators to make more. Fandom thrives on interaction so I'd like to encourage everyone to reblog instead of like something and leave at least a little heart or random thought in the tags of the fic, art or gifset to let the creator know they liked it.
3. More gen fics. Granted, I don’t read many fics because I'm always afraid of other people’s ideas influencing my own writing but I get the impression that a lot of Ghosts fics focus on romance (some my own included) and I’d love to see more found family type stories that focus on friendships.
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
I always struggle with inventing AUs because Coffee Shop AUs and the like don’t really do it for me. For me, an AU only works if it retains at least some of the core elements of the show, and that makes it quite difficult to come up with an AU for something like Ghosts.
But I have recently thought about the potential of a Primeval AU. If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it’s about prehistoric animals wandering into modern time through so-called anomalies. So there's dinosaurs and mammoths roaming the streets, but every now and then humans from the past appear in the present as well. And that’s where our beloved ghosts would come in:
Fanny still gets pushed out of a window by George but instead of landing on the hard ground, she falls through an anomaly and lands in a lake
after Thomas gets shot he staggers through an anomaly and survives thanks to modern medicine
the arrow that hits Pat vanishes through an anomaly before it can reach him. Pat ushers the kids into the bus before he investigates the sparkly thing and gets lost in time
Robin runs from the bear straight into modern Britain
Mary flees into an anomaly when she tries to run away from the witch hunters
Humphrey's anomaly opens below him when he comes out of his hiding place
Julian vanishes from his time while hiding in someone else's bedroom closet - half-naked, of course
Kitty probably went through an anomaly while playing hide and seek
The Captain stumbles upon an anomaly during maneuvers and checks it out (there might just be a possibility Havers does the same in Africa and the two of them to meet again in the future)
the Plague Ghosts cause quite a ruckus when they show up in modern times because, well, they’re infected with the plague. By the time Jemima arrives a few months later, safety measures for this sort of thing have been implemented
Alison and Mike still inherit Button House in this AU. When the government attempts to take the house from them because they need a place for all these misplaced people that’s far away from everywhere else, they strike a deal with them: the Coopers get to keep the house and the government pays them to let the people stay, thus enabling them to repair it
at some point, the government brings them a mammoth - a literal mammoth. Robin is over the moon. Alison and Mike are not. Fanny hopes the next animal will be a sabre-toothed cat.
Ask Game can be found here.

omg your new mobile theme!!! LOVE IT 💜💜💜 btw i'm here to thank you once again for being such an angel with me the gifset you just made is so SPECIAL how did you know that those scenes alone hold my heart? omg 😭 can't believe you made it and thinking of me 😭i'm so sahdjkalsdasd (can't put in words) and i'm so happy you're making gifs now it just a SIGHT to see, you know? everything i was needing. i love you! deeply. thank you. you're a gem! and an excellent gifmaker already too <3
pat, you absolute sweetheart *crushes you in a virtual hug*
first of all, thank you; this has always been one of my fave moments, the smile & his attempt at winking is very precious to me so i had to make a header gif for myself eventually and here we are. honestly? being the perfectionist that i am, i didn't like the previous set i made so i set out to remake it but then i thought, why don't i use a different concept? so i settled for these but now knowing they're some of your favourite looks, it makes me even happier with my choice. i'm so glad you love it, that's all i wanted at the end of the day. making the people that i care about happy is the greatest thing ever <3 everyone has been so supportive of my getting into gifmaking and i truly appreciate it, i can't thank you guys enough. i hold you very near & dear to my heart, take care as always my darling 🩷

48 + 49!
48. How would you describe your giffing style
oooh well i like a lot of color and i always want the overall look and colors of the entire gifset to be very harmonized and matching. but i try to be creative and don't like posting too many of the same type of gifset in a row lolll so a healthy mix of different types of gifsets💖
49. How much would you say you’ve improved since you first started giffing
i would say i've improved a lot because looking back, i was very confidently posting gifs that were really terrible quality at the start. no sharpening, no exposure, completely wrong speed 😭 but i really enjoy giffing so i am usually in a mindset where i want to keep learning and improving. something i couldn't believe this was the difference between this post and this post that have similar concepts but are a year apart. the first one was my very first attempt at blending lmao i stand by it though
