okay so with all this au talk, the DnD college au is actually occupying most of my brain space. here's how it starts (LOTS more info under the cut):
Yosuke is a college first year and has had terrible luck doing the whole fresh start, make lots of friends (and get tons of babes) so far.... so while he doesn't like his suitemate Kubo too much, when Kubo wheedles him to join him for some dorm board game thing (so he doesn't look like too much like a creep going alone; and "it's not like YOU've got any plans on a Friday night, Hanamura") to get close to Yuki-chan- "and there are other hotties there!!" Yosuke doesn't protest TOO much. plus there's free food!
board game thing was actually a DnD session a couple of other first years are trying to put together. also in attendance are: Souji (the dm), Yukiko and Chie (they're already friends but don't know the rest of the group), Kanji, Naoto (Rise is there briefly (she's Naoto's girlfriend); she won't be joining but she wanted to steal Souji's cooking and catch up a little as she, Naoto and Souji are already friends- Naoto is the one to help convince Souji to put together this DnD recruitment, actually. Rise's very busy but she'll appear on occasion throughout the campaign when Souji begs her to play a dramatic bit parts for NPCs) and Ai just cos I feel like other people than the IT should join for a lil bit (she will make an excuse 20 minutes in "ohhhh something came up I'll be right back." she doesn't.) Mitsuo will not be returning after the first session after Yukiko flatly turns him down. Teddie is back home with Yosuke's parents since he's not college age yet and won't be a part of this at all, probably
first session is a little messy (the enthusiasm levels vary wildly among the players) but what hooks Yosuke and gets him to come back again is one of his off the wall ideas in combat actually worked and won them the battle and the dopamine he got from that is unmatched
what's the campaign look like: UHHHHHH i don't know but I have the vague idea it would somewhat mirror the events of p4- so instead of some world ending adventuring maybe the gang uncovers a serial murder plot? but more fantasy. and maybe the murderer's story is somehow tied to the NPC that Yosuke eventually falls in love with idk
the gang's characters!
Naoto already had their character planned out beforehand: an elf ranger ♂ (Souji had to talk them down from going into some super specific off-book combo to not scare off the newbies that hopefully would join). Yukiko, Chie, and Kanji had all actually read the recruitment flyer for this event so had a vague idea of their characters but haven't played a ttrpg before so just went with what appealed to them rather then how they play. Yukiko: tiefling warlock (and after she learned Naoto is x-gender she thought that sounded fun and made her character x-gender as well; Naoto thinks maybe they're being mocked but it's genuine on Yukiko's part). Chie: human monk ♀. Kanji: halfling cleric ♀. Yosuke had no idea what he was getting into so he's just going for what's Coolest. he considered being a super yolked warrior but nah... not even in make believe. But he could be an awesome stealthy ninja!! So he chooses rogue. as for race, he's not going to be an elf that's basically like being a fairy, right, and he's not... but he thinks they get cool bonus powers or something so he'll go with half-elf.
(Ai tried to be an elf princess but Souji gently maneuvered her to elf druid. Kubo went with the first things that caught his eye: dragonborn barbarian)
as for names, only Naoto came up with one already (Erawin <deeply into western high fantasy>); the rest of the gang workshops names at the table:
Yosuke: Jira (i'm not creative what do u want from me .)
Chie<sweating, desperately trying not to say her literal first thought > : her name is……uhhh… <gives up> Lee…
Yukiko just tries vague grunts to turn into a name (“Grgk!” “no” “Aaaht!” “no” “ERP!” “sounds like a belch” <yukiko laugh > “is that a name?? er- no” “Hrk!” “OKAY YES HRK YOU CAN BE HRK”)
Kanji: Usagi (it is for the reason you're thinking)
anyway the main meat of the au is an NPC appearing and then reoccurring throughout the campaign that Yosuke's character forms a natural rapport with... Souji picks up on this and fleshes out the NPC beyond what was a throw away background character. the gang try to do their DnD sessions every week for at least a couple hours, but it still takes them weeks and weeks to get through what Souji planned. since it's so gradual, Yosuke doesn't notice when their characters' banter turned from playful to outright flirtatious...
and he swears he's not like THAT but he can't help getting so genuinely upset when he dies* in Jira's arms and Yosuke can't separate character from person when he hears Souji's voice tells him before he dies that he- he loves--
*temporarily; I'm not a monster

I am continually delighted by Nintendo's commitment to making Link their Designated Androgynous Fantasy Protagonist. Every time some facet of a game threatens to make him too manly, another facet pulls him back the other direction.
Twilight Princess: He's a farmboy! Buff! He wrangles goats bare-handed and sumo-wrestles Gorons and he's a gotdang werewolf, the most butchly of the common Halloween monsters! He's also super-soft with children and small animals, especially cats.
Skyward Sword: He's at the top of his class in knight school and he has a girlfriend...and it's no wonder, with those FULL POUTY KISSABLE LIPS.
Hyrule Warriors: He's in the FUCKING ARMY...and he accessorizes and his eyeliner game is on point.
Breath of the Wild: He's a rugged survivalist, living off the land, which he traverses largely through the Power of Abs. One phase of the quest requires that he cross-dress and he's kinda into it.
All of which brings me to my point, which is...what butchness is he getting up to in Tears of the Kingdom that forces him to grow his hair out that long as a counter-balance?

With the help of two apps and several hours that I really should have spent doing school, I present to you: my OC
Tumblr media
I will fully admit that some of this I had to trace in order for it to look this nice, but it was definitely worth it. I'm still debating on names - my top two are Nikki and Pixie - but I'm open to any suggestions, lol. I'm still working on episode one of her show, but I'm hoping that I'll find some time over Christmas break to work on that.

Sapphic SFF book recommendation master-post part 1: Fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Caption:
Reminded me of: The Poppy War, Baru Cormorant, The Jasmine Throne
Other Notes: Main character is genderqueer & on the ace spectrum
Black Sun - Rebecca Roanhorse
Plot: Fantasy set in pre-columbian americas with 3 povs. A solar eclipse is approaching and the political landscape will change forever.
Plot: Fantasy set in pre-columbian americas with 3 povs. A solar eclipse is approaching and the political landscape will change forever.
Plot: Fantasy set in pre-columbian americas with 3 povs. A solar eclipse is approaching and the political landscape will change forever.
Reminded me of: Steel Crowe Saga, Broken Earth Trilogy, Priory of the Orange Tree
Other Notes: Also Features: Nonbinary characters, gods, knife priests, a bisexual mermaid, crows. Romance is not a major aspect of the book.
The Tiger’s Daughter - K Arsenault Rivera
Plot: Love letter between two childhood friends from different cultures. They are both warriors. One becomes a ruler and the other becomes a monster. Features my favorite trope: a bonding road trip!
Other Notes: I’ve heard it is not incredibly accurate to the cultures it represents. Also, it is a romance more than anything else. The main focus is the two women’s relationship.
The Empress of Salt and Fortune, When the Tiger came Down the Mountain - Nghi Vo
Plot: Two sapphic novellas focusing on storytelling, power, narrative, and the plight of women.
Other Notes: Both really short and excellent! The tiger one is also really funny. highly recommend.
The Jasmine Throne - Tasha Suri
Plot: A captive princess and her secretly powerful maidservant form a shaky alliance in a fantasy world inspired by the epics of India.
Reminded me of: Baru Cormorant (everything reminds me of her), The Unbroken, She Who Became the Sun
Other Notes: I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
The Traitor Baru Cormorant - Seth Dickinson
Plot: Baru’s island is colonied when she is a child. She plans to rise up in society and destory them from within. It goes so well and nothing bad happens.
Reminded me of: Black Sails, A Memory Called Empire, Ninefox Gambit, Gideon the Ninth, The Poppy War
Other Notes: look up content warnings!! It will make you cry! This book ruined my life but in a good way. The sequels include lots of hot morally grey women, a great nonbinary POV character, and some of the funniest lines I’ve ever read. I feel I have to say this because no one wants to read the sequels after finishing Traitor.
The Rise of Kyoshi
Plot: Kyoshi the earthbender discovers she is the Avatar and must deal with the consequences. She also gets a fire nation girlfriend.
Reminded me of: Avatar the Last Airbender (duh), The Broken Earth Trilogy
Other Notes: Felt more mature than ATLA but was able to keep the spirit. I bet you could read it without having seen ATLA.
The Unbroken - C. L. Clark
Plot: Touraine has been raised as a soldier by the forces that took her homeland. Luca is a princess sent to stop a rebellion in aforementioned homeland. They meet. North African inspired fantasy, anti-colonialism themes.
Reminded me of: Baru Cormorant, The Jasmine Throne
Other Notes: lots of (mostly morally grey) queer women characters
The Unspoken Name - A.K. Larkwood
Plot: A sword lesbian orc, her annoying gay brother (not biological), a necromancer, and an older morally grey necromancer-orc go up against an ancient God/father figure.
Reminded me of: Gideon the Ninth, Priory of the Orange Tree
Other Notes: I just really recommend reading this if you want something to read after finishing the Locked tomb. similar vibes.
The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon
Plot: This one is super popular so idk if I even have to say it. 4 POVs including a sapphic spy undercover as a handmaiden, a dragon rider, a nice guy, and a not nice guy (idk I’m losing energy making these summaries).
Reminded me of: Crier’s War, GOT if it was less sexist, The Unspoken Name, The Queen of Coins and Whispers, The Midnight Lie
Other Notes: It seems long and it is! But it’s doable. I was so invested in the slow burn I didn’t even notice the length.

belamour
this is a blurb from my favorite little family.
read the cooking class here :)
have any blurb ideas? send them in
Tumblr media
belamour: one who is loved; a beloved person
If there was one lesson Autumn Holland took and understood with everything in her being, it was how to love and be loved. It was a lesson her father and everyone in her life had implemented in her from the day she was born. There was never a day where Autumn Holland didn’t know she was so irrevocably loved. She knew a father’s love, one so fierce and ready to go to the ends of the world to make sure his baby girl was all well and happy in her little world. She knew a grandmother’s love, an irenic love that chases away the bad with a well-read story and a kiss on the head. She knew an uncle’s love, a playful love that creates mischief and new memories to cherish. She never felt as if she was void of an emotion people searched the ends of the earth for until she met Lucas, who had a mother’s love.
A mother’s love. She never felt as if her life wasn’t plentiful, but seeing the way Y/N give Lucas a love she had never received, changed that thought. A mother’s love was passionate and provided security. It was the first emotion that a child feels from their mother. A bleeding love that sanctifies and creates halcyon moments. It entertained fantasies and stories of dragons in caves and pirates out at sea, looking for a lost gold. It stuck plasters on scraped knees with a kiss on the cheek and a push to get back on the bicycle until they learn. It helps conquer fears but remains vigilant should it become too much to bear. She hadn’t known about this love until she met Y/N Y/L/N, a mother who wore her heart on her sleeve and took on the scary world for her son.
Autumn knew Y/N loved her the way any mother would love. She got the same treatment Lucas got from the woman she grew to cherish. She got fables of princesses who led their people into prosperity and female warriors who fought their enemies and came out on top. She had a hand to hold when she walked into her year one class the first day of school and skipped in when her father’s girlfriend promised to be there after, eager to hear about her day. Y/N gave her sweet treats during their tea parties where they were not to be disturbed. She gave Autumn a listening ear when the little girl enthusiastically told her about the little critters she collected outside—something she couldn’t do with her father because he ran away and squealed at the sight of anything that crawls or flies. She gave Autumn a mother; something she didn’t know caused a void in her heart until it was taken from her.
The little girl had been planning to call Y/N ‘mummy’ for ages, feeling it was long overdue. It was a matter of finding the right moment; Autumn was a perfectionist. Y/N was a perfect mum, and thus, calling her ‘mummy’ had to be perfect too. It was merely a word, but Y/N wasn’t just a woman. She was a woman who loved her father with her entire heart and loved his flaws. She was a woman who took care of Autumn like she was her own and appreciated the little girl’s look on life. She was the woman who gave her an older brother to play with and look up to. She was the woman who changed her life for the better and patched the hole in her life—and her father’s—she didn’t know she had. She was everything to the little girl and more.
That was why she found herself getting upset when the word she had been saving for a good time slipped out of her mouth. It was a designated Y/N/Autumn day in their household. Tom had taken Lucas out of the house and to the golf course, which left Autumn and Y/N cuddling up on the couch, watching a Disney movie. It wasn’t as fancy as their other pseudo-mum/daughter dates were, but it was the perfect set-up for the two of them. Autumn knew that that was why the words slipped out of her mouth because she was comfortable, but it didn’t stop her from chastising herself for letting them slip so quickly.
“I love you, mummy,” she had whispered after Y/N planted a kiss on the top of her head after they cuddled up against one another. Autumn lay her body against Y/N’s side, tucked away safely under her arm. She felt Y/N still beside her, and for a second, her little body filled with worry. Autumn Holland inherited a lot from her father. She was cursed with his fear of rejection. She was scared of many things, but nothing could top her fear of being rejected by the woman who cared for her in a way no one else had. She couldn’t lose that feeling, and she couldn’t be the reason her father lost it either.
“I,” Y/N paused, looking down at the curly-haired girl tucked under her arm, desperately trying to keep her tears from spilling from her honey eyes. “I love you, too, pumpkin.”
“Can I call you mummy?” Autumn whispered, a slight airiness floating through her at Y/N’s declaration of love.
“Of course, my darling,” she smiled, “but only if I get to call you my daughter.”
“Yes, please,”
Autumn had many things, and now she had a mother’s love. She had a mother who did everything they were meant to do and more. She had a mother who taught her about the stars and showed her how to create delicacies. She had a mother. She had a mummy who loved her. And that was more than she could ask for.

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag
Stolen from @ninja-muse
How many books have you read so far?
81, including 5 rereads, and currently reading 2.
What genres have you read?
Fantasy (38), science fiction (15), historical (9), contemporary (8), nonfiction (6), mystery (5), horror (4), thriller (3) and magic realism (1)
Best books you’ve read so far in 2021:
Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (lesbian necromancers in space, pov fuckery, memory wiping, self-styled God-Emperor quoting memes)
Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland (bisexual and aroace Black girls fighting zombies, becoming outlaws and adopting kids in the Old West)
Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston (12 year old recruited by Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, has delightful adventures, searches for missing brother)
The Route of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate (the tragic gay story of a background character from Dracula)
All the Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe (unputdownable thriller, reformed teenage conartist channels all her skills to save girlfriend and ex-boyfriend from bank robbery gone wrong)
Space Opera by Catherine M. Valente (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy shaken vigorously, drenched in body glitter and shoved on stage for intergalactic Eurovision)
A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (mind-sharing friends, first contact with aliens, learning/inventing a whole new form of communication in order to ask said aliens ‘please stop killing us’ before the military starts blowing up planets, political intrigue in space empire, cute lesbian romance with ‘will she ever really, truly see me as fully human and equal’ angst)
When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo (story about stories, clan of tiger shapeshifters are pissed off that humans are telling the story of the lady scholar who married the tiger queen all wrong, damn it)
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (grumpy, anxious cyborg learns what it means to have free will and be cared for)
Warrior Moon by K. Arsenault Rivera (third in trilogy about epic sapphic love reshaping the world in fantasy China/Japan/Mongolia)
I’m 2/3 through The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal but I’m already pretty sure it belongs on this list
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021:
A lot of the ones of my previous list - Harrow the Ninth, Deathless Divide, A Desolation Called Peace, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain and Warrior Moon are sequels. Out of those, I think probably A Desolation Called Peace was the best book (it’s beautiful, though-provoking science fiction that I can’t wait to vote for in next year’s Hugo awards) and Harrow the Ninth was the best sequel (the way it interacts with the previous book, adshfk).
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to:
So many!
The River Has Teeth by Erica Waters (Southern gothic, angry sapphic witches, the mystery of a missing sister)
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan (queer fantasy about the founding of the Ming dynasty, described as “Mulan meets The Song of Achilles”)
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (retelling of The Swan Princes with a Chinese twist)
Eat Your Heart Out by Kelly deVos (zombies attack a weight loss camp, pissed off teens fight back, has snark, horror and body positivity)
A War of Swallowed Stars by Sangu Mandanna (third in a series about the Mahabarata in space)
The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison (sequel to the lovely The Goblin Emperor, kindness and decency and solving murders)
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri (princess and handmaiden/priestess holding knives to each other’s ribs, kissing under a waterfall and reshaping an empire)
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian (former highwayman teaches a nobleman how to do a heist, with sexy results)
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston (sapphic time travel romance)
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year:
The Sisters of Reckoning by Charlotte Nicole Davis (sequel to the story of indentured sex workers escaping the ‘welcome house’ and striking out across the desert to make a new life, I’m told the rivals-to-friends dynamic I adored is gonna add -to-lovers)
Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko (sequel to epic African fantasy about empires and free will and telepathic harems)
No Gods, No Monsters by Cadwell Turnbull (monsters reveal themselves to the world, chaos and hate crimes ensue)
The All Consuming World by Cassandra Khaw (all girl team of broken, bitter former criminals get back together for one last mission)
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (giant robots, mind melds and polyamory)
Noor by Nnedi Okorafor (disability, biotechnology, Nigerian science fiction)
Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen (The Little Mermaid story with West African mythology)
The Nobleman’s Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks by Mackenzi Lee (much-anticipated third in a trilogy about queer disaster siblings in slightly magical 18th century Europe)
Biggest disappointment:
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A supposed classic that disgusted and infuriated me. I tried to read it for book club but rage quit 120 pages in, and reading up on the rest of the story made me so very glad I did.
Biggest surprise:
Daughters of Frankenstein: Lesbian Mad Scientists! by Steve Berman. A fantastic array of sapphic science fiction that gave me surprise after surprise as I encountered a Scooby Doo parody, a Jeeves and Wooster parody, a Pgymalion and Galatea love story between a scientist and her robot wife, psychological horror about wildly unethical experiments, lesbian outlaws building armoured getaway vehicles to rob banks, middle-aged wives fightng ice weasels and adopting a kid, chaotic genius invents hot new drug and accidentally starts the zombie apocalypse ...
Favorite new author (debut or new to you):
Martha Wells - I read the first five Murderbot books and fell head over heels in love
Underrated gems:
The Myriad Carnival by Matthew Bright (dark and delightful anthology of queer stories revolving around a magical carnival, has only 12 ratings on goodreads) and Stone and Steel by Eboni J. Dunbar (African fantasy novella with sapphic soldiers and queens that manages to feel both epic and satisfying despite being only 92 pages long, has only 100 ratings on goodreads)
Newest fictional crush:
Guet Imm from The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho - a female Chirrut Imwe type who leaves her nunnery and cheerfully forces her way into a group of bandits. Sunnily chaotic weirdos are most definitely my type. Though considering the way she responded to a guy hitting on her with a pleasant “Oh, sure, we could sleep together, but I’m very religious so I’d have to make sacrifice after” (Tet Sang translates: “She’s not agreeing, you fool, she’s threatening you, when she says ‘make sacrifice’ she means ‘cut your dick off’”), perhaps it’s best to just Look Respectfully.
And perhaps also Iktan from Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. Xe’s the spymaster, protector and ex-lover of one of the protagonists. Sure, xe may be ruthless, amoral and more than a little terrifying, but it’s in a really hot way.
Newest favorite characters:
Murderbot and all its friends
Book that made you cry:
None have actually made me cry (my tears are difficult to provoke, I can only name like five books that have ever had me actually crying), but the closest I came was probably The Old Lie by Claire G. Coleman. It’s science fiction where Earth gets caught up in a war between alien powers, and humans join the army to fight in a horrific war for a Federation that doesn’t even consider them citizens, get their children kidnapped to become servants and pets for wealthy alien families, and have their homes destroyed in weapons testing. All these things echo the real history of how white people have treated Indigenous Australians, and it both is and is not a metaphor, since the protagonists are all Aboriginal and very aware of the paralells.
Book that made you happy:
Amari and the Night Brothers is a warmhearted delight.
Most beautiful book cover of a book you’ve read so far this year:
Either The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett or The Citadel of Weeping Pearls by Aliette de Bodard
How are you doing with your year’s goals?
81/100 books
going strong with ‘two authors of colour for each white author’
doing good with ‘read from a wider variety of contries’ (so far I’ve read authors from 20 different countries)
doing good with ‘I don’t want straight protagonists to be the majority’ (41 queer or indeterminate protagonists versus 31 straight ones)
doing OK with ‘include some translated books’ (6 books originally written in other languages)
could do better with ‘read some books that aren’t from the last two decades’ (I’ve read one from the 1990s, one from the 1970s and one from the 1960s, but that’s not a lot - I used to read books from centuries ago)
could do better with ‘more trans authors’ too - I’ve read three nonbinary authors and no binary trans folks so far, but I do have several on my to-read list
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter and Love and Other Thought Experiments by Sophie Ward, because they’re my book club’s picks for August and September
Not tagging anyone because I wasn’t officially tagged myself, but if you see this and want to do it, go ahead, and tag me!

[pedophilia, rape, fandom cw]
also—while i continue to be opposed to censorship of libraries, and i want to be very clear that this post does not constitute any alteration of that stance—there are a couple of fics near the top of the geraskier feed at the moment in which geralt is portrayed as a pedophilic rapist, and like, they're properly tagged and all, but it just really hurts my heart to see that characterization of him because i can't help feeling like, oof, he's been so deeply wounded by people thinking he's a monster in-universe, like that's genuinely a Trauma for him, and now he's getting that reception reenacted on a meta level, too?

《This story series is also on my AO3 acc @ Paoloca》
SUMMARY: The bachelors of Selphia conjure up a plan to decide who truly deserves the beautiful princess' heart...if Frey can only choose one of them, that is.
PAIRINGS: Frey x Vishnal, Frey x Kiel, Frey x Doug, Frey x Arthur, Frey x Dylas, Frey x Leon (Polyamorous Ships)
RATING: Mature/18+/Romance & Smut. Please bear these in mind if you are uncomfortable and do NOT report!
NOTE: I have been an avid fan and lover of the Rune Factory series for a looong fooken time now and with RF 5 coming up (who else can't wait?!?!) along with my bursting inspiration, I decided to do something a lil special~ 💖
This story is actually one I wrote--or at least TRIED to write as I didn't finish it--many years ago on my old Wattpad acc (I have a new one now). As such, I'm taking the basic plotline from the original idea I had and simply making it a bit better especially now that I'm older + more mature (pfft yeah sure "mAtUrE" xD).
I sincerely and deeply love ALL of the amazing bachelors on RF 4 and as someone who absolutely ✨A D O R E S✨ reverse harems, I really *personally* don't think that Frey has to choose! And so, here's a naughty + sweet story that'll kinda just delve into my--and I'm sure others'--fantasy ;)
I hope ya lovelies will enjoy this story series and your wonderful support is always very much appreciated! 🥺💕💕 Also, feel free to fangirl/fanboy with me anytime~
P.S. Please forgive mah pathetic ass in advance if I ever portray any of the characters wrong, I promise to do my best!!

Summer 1, the dawn of a sweltering season. But most of all...
Beach Day!
Ah, yes, a most wonderful holiday to take a dip in the refreshing water and don the most attractive swimsuits that perfectly hugged one's form! And while it was understandable for the gentlemen to gawk and admire the lovely ladies, it seemed that all the bachelors of Selphia were completely ensnared by one warrior princess in particular...
Frey's tinkly laughter carried in the air as she happily swam around in the lake with the other girls. It was certainly a gorgeous day, yet none could quite rival the turquoise haired beauty's radiant smile.
"Haa... The princess is SO beautiful~" Vishnal sighed dreamily, his violet eyes turning into hearts.
"A goddess among mere mortals!" Kiel piped up cutely.
"You guys are so lame! But, uh... Y-Yeah, I agree, I guess." Doug conceded, face flushing as scarlet as his hair.
"I am a man, after all. Therefore, I must say I agree as well." Arthur cleared his throat, propping his glasses.
"You are all perverts..." Dylas grumbled, though he couldn't help but shyly sneak a peek at Frey.
"My, my~ You're such a bad liar, horsie. Calling us perverts when you, yourself, are one~" Leon chuckled, smirking.
"Who're ya calling horsie?!" Dylas snapped, but couldn't start an argument when all of them heard a splash and saw Frey emerge onto shore.
"Princess!" Vishnal beamed, not wasting a single second as he dashed towards her with a towel much like an excited puppy. "Are you done swimming?"
Frey gratefully took the towel, wiping her drenching body with it. "Yes, I am! And once I change into my clothes, I'm going to be checking the requests."
"You're ever so diligent, Frey. I truly admire that about you." Arthur smiled as he and the rest of the boys approached their beloved girlfriend. Arthur's glasses then flashed as the sun reflected on them, and he quickly grabbed that splendid opportunity for his gaze to drop and hyperfocus on Frey's nearly naked body. He barely managed to suppress it as he almost shamelessly licked his lips, fully taking in and very much appreciating her wet and fit physique.
"Oh, it's nothing! I'm only doing my duties." Frey giggled, embarrassed as her cheeks tinted pink. "But other than that, how come you guys aren't in your swimsuits? It's boiling!" She frowned worriedly.
"Why, is milady that eager to see me in all my glory?" Leon purred, standing in front of her in a flash. His teal eyes sparkled mischievously, as one of his hands reached forward to run his fingers through her long hair. "If you want to see me that badly, I'd rather 'perform' a private show for you tonight~"
Frey became as red as a ruby, opening and closing her mouth repeatedly like a fish out of water. She tried to speak, but no words came out as she could only stare up with eyes as wide as dinner plates at an amused Leon who was enjoying this situation far too much.
"Oi, knock it off!" Dylas growled, wrapping a protective arm around Frey as he glared sharply at Leon. "She's gonna go fishing with me after she's done, anyways!"
"WHAT?! No fair, you can't hog her all to yourself! If you guys are going fishing then I'm going, too!" Doug huffed, snatching Frey away from Dylas.
"No way, you dumbass dwarf! You're not invited!"
"Well, I am now, you fucking nag!"
As the two handsome idiots bickered like an old married couple and fought over Frey, she could only release an exasperated sigh. Honestly, she loved them both, but there was really no use trying to talk any sense into them. The best anyone could do was just wait it out until they inevitably get tired.
But as Doug and Dylas were yanking Frey from one side to another like a ragdoll, they suddenly stopped. It seems that everyone else halted, too, and the air blew bitter cold. Frey, oblivious, could only raise a brow before she finally realized--or more like felt--what all the boys were staring at.
She looked down, Doug and Dylas' hands accidentally cupping each one of Frey's breasts. All of the boys were a thousand shades of crimson, and Vishnal even started to have a nosebleed.
"ACK! S-Sorry..!" Doug and Dylas exclaimed in unison, abruptly pulling their hands away as if they were burned.
"O-Oh, uh, it's f-fine..!" Frey stuttered, not being able to meet anyone's gaze. "I-It was just an accident, after all!"
"Are you sure you're alright, Frey?" Kiel asked, holding her hands into his gently as he studied her face in concern. "These lowlifes didn't hurt you, did they?" It was rare for Kiel to be angry let alone badmouthing anyone, but it was clear from his tone how upset he was. Honestly, Doug and Dylas were a little scared...
"Y-Yes, I'm alright!" Frey nodded vigorously, smiling brightly. "Seriously, guys, don't worry about me! I'll see you all later, okay?" She hurriedly gave each one of them a chaste peck on the cheek before making her way back to the castle.
"So..." Leon began, a fake smile plastered on his lips as his eyes held no emotion. "I wonder who the true perverts are now?"
"H-Hey, it was an accident! Besides, it's all this moron's fault!" Dylas retorted, pointing an accusatory finger at Doug.
"MY fault?! If you just invited me in the first place, none of this would've happened!" Doug shouted furiously.
"You guys...touched...the princess' b-b-breasts..." Vishnal muttered, totally lost in his own world as he was slowly deteriorating from existence.
"Oh, my..." Arthur let out a heavy exhale. "I'm sure you two already know this, but as soon as Frey is done with her tasks then you both must apologize to her again. Accident or not, it is completely unacceptable for a man to touch a woman without her consent."
"Hey, y'know, I've been wondering..." Kiel cut in. "Do you guys ever think if Frey is just being strung along by us?"
"What do you mean?" Doug frowned.
"Like, didn't we confess to Frey at different times? And at every confession, she rejected all of us. And later on, it was only then we found out that we all shared the same feelings for her."
"So, what's your point?" Dylas pressed.
Kiel sighed, staring pointedly at the taller man. "Don't you find it a bit weird that now, we're all in a relationship with her? I know that being in a polyamorous relationship with Frey was something we all consented on from the very beginning, but why the sudden change of heart?"
"Isn't it obvious? Being in a polyamorous relationship means that Frey likes all of us at the same time, which is fine. Maybe she was just too shy at first to admit it." Leon shrugged.
"That may be true, or...what if she's only with us out of pity?" A wave of realization washed through everyone, and a certain pang of sadness settled in their hearts. "Frey is such a nice person, it's possible she only agreed to be with us since she felt bad for rejecting us. And now, she doesn't know how to break up with us for fear of hurting us even more."
"There's also one other possibility..." Arthur spoke up. "What if she actually likes one of us, but can't exclusively date that person?"
Dead silence. Only the faint sounds of the lake thrashing and birds chirping, before Vishnal was the one who first woke up back to reality.
"So... What are we supposed to do?" He questioned softly. "I feel so terrible... If what you're saying is true, then I don't want to continue on like this. I love Frey, but I can't ever bear the thought of hurting her!"
"How about a game?" Leon suggested.
"Now's really not the time, foxy." Doug rolled his eyes.
"No, no. You've misunderstood." Leon shook his head. "I'm talking about a game to see who Frey truly likes or doesn't like. And that way, we won't have to be hurting her and suffering like this anymore."
"Hmm... An interesting proposition." Arthur hummed thoughtfully. "I don't quite like referring to this as a 'game', but colour me intrigued. What's your idea, then?"
"Alright. So, we each get one whole day to spend with Frey. Completely alone, and no one is allowed to bother anyone else. As long as Frey is okay with it, then we can do whatever we want with her. Going on dates, exploring...you get the idea. Finally, by the end of the week, we'll all ask her how she feels and who she had the most fun with. Her answer will then determine what will happen afterwards."
"Hmph. Okay, that sounds good." Dylas nodded, agreeing for once. "How can we settle who goes first and last, though?"
"I think it would only be fair if we go in the order that Frey met us. So it's Vishnal, me, Doug, Arthur, Dylas, and then Leon." Kiel offered.
"All in favour?" Arthur asked, and everyone collectively voiced out their approval. "Good. It's settled, then. May the best man win!"
"Speaking of, I forgot that the castle is undergoing construction! So please excuse me, I'll have to get going now!" Vishnal grinned, disappearing in a blink of an eye.
"Wait... I just visited Ventuswill earlier with Granny Blossom." Doug furrowed his brows before gasping. "That bastard..! He went to go have a headstart with Frey!" He immediately chased after the conniving butler, but not before his shoulder got bumped hard by Dylas.
"If anyone's gonna get a headstart, it's me!"
"Oh, shut the hell up, HORSIE!"
Arthur sighed deeply, rubbing his temples stressfully as Kiel only chuckled sheepishly. Leon simply watched the scene, his fan hiding his smirk.
'There is a saying: Save the best for last~' Leon thought satisfyingly to himself.

Favorite Thor Ships: Part 1
Out of all the MCU, the Thor movies are my favorites.
It helps that I'm a multi shipper and all the women in Thor's life are awesome. So I want to do some posts about my favorite Thor ships. And I’m starting with my personal favorite: Thor/Sif.
Tumblr media
Totally biased, I've been quietly rooting for Thor and Sif to hook up since 2011 and no matter what direction the story takes Thor x Sif will always be my favorite potential relationship.
Obviously, part of this is just because I have a massive crush on Sif, the character, and Jaimie Alexander, the actress. I love her...why?
Lady Sif is sort of the MCU equivalent of Wonder Woman, an immortal who combines strength and nobility with a sense of warmth, compassion, and emotional openness.
Tumblr media
She doesn't get a huge amount of screen time but comes off as an incredibly well-rounded character, especially in a genre where many female character are assigned valued based on how well they can mimic the traditional cliches of male Action Heroes.
Sif is able to switch from playful and cocky, to stoic and serious, to gentle and supportive, depending on the situation (as benefiting a literal goddess).
In other word's, she's Girlfriend Material of the absolute highest quality!
Beyond that, I love that she's so high-key Romantic in her feelings for Thor. Having your Badass Warrior Princess character mournfully pining as she gazes across a crowded room at her lifelong friend, her eyes brimming with unspoken feeling... it's exactly the kind of over the top, melodramatic bullshit that I love about the Asgardians and their weird alien/pseudo-Shakespearian/mythic warrior culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time, she's never fawning in her interactions with Thor. They banter like old friends and flirt in mid-combat.
Tumblr media
Sif tries to counsel him when she thinks he needs perspective or patience.
Tumblr media
She advocates for him when he's not around.
Tumblr media
To me it's a very romantic set-up, a long-term friendship based on loyalty and mutual trust with the potential to develop into a very deep relationship. (Though, flipping it around, I can definitely see how female viewers might not appreciate their Super-Hero/Immortal Warrior Woman power fantasy character being portrayed, pining from the sidelines for several centuries).
Plus, their dynamic has this tropey, genderswap thing going on. A Fantasy Prince and his Loyal Female Knight. Except the Fantasy Prince is a giant Viking Immortal with a magic hammer and he and his girlfriend ride into battle side by side which is both hot and romantic to me.
Tumblr media
Of course the downside  to Thor x Sif as a relationship (also maybe what makes it appealing)... is that it's all potential. As far as we know, Thor is either unaware of Sif's feelings or does not reciprocate. Which is weird because Thor generally comes off as a very socially/emotionally aware guy... at least in the context of Asgardian society.
One of my favorite things about Thor is that he's confident but honest and genuine as well. He never comes off as a "ladies man" i.e someone who puts on a smooth, crafted persona specifically to interact with women.
However, he clearly seems to be aware when women are attracted to him (Jane Foster, the woman in the subway)...so how come he doesn't seem to notice the very obvious torch Sif is carrying?
Tumblr media
My personal headcannon for this is that they either casually dated as adolescent (whatever age that is for Asgardians) or came very close to it. But then Frigga and/or Odin stepped in, took Sif aside and basically told her to hold off because they thought she had the potential to be a good queen.
Before his time on Earth, Thor was reckless, arrogant, impulsive, and quick to violence. He wasn't ready to be a king or a committed lover. And so Sif was encouraged to do the responsible thing and wait.
The irony being that by the time he had matured into the person he was supposed to be, he had met somebody else.
To me, there's something there that mirrors the fall of Asgard. Why not wait? They're gods after all, there's always going to be more time.
Then Thor gets banished and comes back different. He's met a mortal woman and doesn't want to be king anymore. Frigga, who Sif always thought would be her mother-in-law one day, is dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thor goes searching across the universe and then Odin sends her away from Asgard. And when she finds her way back even her home is gone. Her people live on Earth now, or at least the fraction of them that still survive after Hela, Surtur, and Thanos.
Thor is gone again, traveling through space with a bunch of mercenaries she’s never heard of.
Maybe I'm just projecting because I want someone in-universe to mourn Asgard and everything those people must have lost in what must seem like a very short amount of time to them.
I always thought Thor x Sif had the potential to be a very stable, well-rounded couple. However, given Thor's general arc in the first two movies  it would have seemed a little off, thematically speaking, if he ended up with the immortal warrior princess/long-time friend that his parents wanted him to get with all along.
However, post-Ragnarok/Endgame I think there is a lot of dramatic/narrative potential to a romantic reunion between Thor and Sif, someone who knew him before everything started and can see how much he has changed. Maybe someone he didn't realize how much he cared for until she was gone.
For her it's a second chance at something she thought was lost, a piece of her past that's come back damaged and different but still worth fighting for.
--
Obviously, this is all conjecture. There's no guarantee that Sif will return in Thor 4. As a shipper part of me is hoping for it, however as a fan of her character I'm also worried about her being crammed in and either sidelined or mischaracterized by the those behind the scenes.
If she shows up in the Loki show, that's more screen time and room for character development.
However, I'm not hugely interested in Loki's show and depending on the direction it takes I'm not sure that it will play to her strengths as a character. My dream scenario was for Sif to have her own Xena-style high fantasy adventure (with Thor showing up in a supporting role) but that’s seem very unlikely.
---
Anyway, I'm a multi shipper and I'm planning to do more of these for Thor x Valkyrie and Thor x Jane. I just wanted to get my fave out of the way first.

Pop Music in Fire Emblem Fates: Analysis and Theories
Fire Emblem are a series of game of tactical roleplaying, with stories set in magical medieval fantasy lands. The gameplay is like an advanced rock-paper-scissor with medieval weapons and chess, if every piece of chess were an anime warrior with their own backstory.
The specific game(s) I’m going to talk about is Fire Emblem Fates, a story divided in 3 games (Fire Emblem Birthright, Fire Emblem Conquest and Fire Emblem Revelation) about Corrin (the customizable player avatar), a half dragon and half human anime boy/girl who was a prince/princess of a kingdom, then was kidnaped at a young age and raised in another kingdom, and then both kingdoms declare war against each other and Corrin has to choose which kingdom they are going to ally with. You choose your blood family in Fire Emblem Birthright and the family who raised you in Fire Emblem Conquest, and both in Fire Emblem Revelations but I’m not going to talk much about revelations. In Conquest you are in the side of the bad guy and in Birthright against him, but in both games you want to defeat it.
In brief, anime protagonist must choose side in a war, but both sides are against the king of one of the sides.
So, what role does music play in this game, and especially pop? Well in all the games you have a magical singer companion named Azura, who is somehow related to you (but not enough, so you can marry her). Azura sings a magical song that basically only her can sing, and the song does what you expect of a magical song (calm, heal, cheer, and in gameplay gives an extra action to an ally)
The magical song is called “Lost in thoughts all alone”. This song is the principal and most important song of the game, being singed a lot by Azura, played in the background in parts of the game and in the credits. The genre of the song is a bolero, having a slow rhythm and pure vocals.
In both Conquest and Birthright Azura sing in front of the evil king a fragment of the song, but in each game she sing a very different version.
(*some people call the fragment of the song “Azura’s dance” instead of “lost in thoughts all alone”, I’m going to call it “lost in thoughts all alone”*)
Link of the song: https://youtu.be/5mHB84WGorA
The first version of the song is the Hoshido version. This version is the same genre of “lost in thoughts all alone” that is being played throughout the game. This version is a bolero, the instruments are typical western orchestral instruments. The dance of this song is very graceful with little movement but resembling a little to ballet.
The second version of the song is the Nohr version. This version es clearly faster and more actual. This song combines western pop music with middle eastern sounds. The presence of middle easter sound or influence in western pop is nothing new, we can see it in “Toxic” of Britney Spears or in “I’m so good at yoga” of the crew of crazy ex-girlfriend (event though the last is more of a parody). The dance in this scene has a lot of belly dance, urban dance and hip moves, and in my opinion, it reminds a lot of Shakira. Sadly, this version of “Azura’s dance” don’t have a complete version (being “lost in thoughts all alone” the complete version”)
So why the developers decided to add a pop song in a Medieval themed game?
No one knows. There isn’t an official version.
My theory is in the gameplay. SPOILER ALERT ABOUT BOTH GAMES
In both games you go to the city of Cyrkensia, there lies a grand Opera House.
So, in Conquest you and Azura are against the evil king and you think that he’s a literal monster. When you are in the city you meet the famous songstress Layla but she wants to run away to be with her family, but the evil kings wants to see her sing, so with a little bit of magic Azura is perceived as Layla and sing the song she’s expected to sing. With the magic song she expects to show he’s a monster, but she only causes him discomfort.
On the other hand, in Conquest you and Azura are in the same army of the king, but she still wants to show he is a literal monster, so she put a costume so no one can tell who she is (but being honest, the wig of Hannah Montana is a better deceiver), and sing the opposite of what the king is supposed to hear. That give her the “woah factor” needed to impress him, because she wouldn’t have to be incognito when she leaves the opera, because she’s in his army. But even then the “woah factor” is not really a complete explanation, because that factor would let the king hear the whole song, but even then, the Hoshido version could do the job.
Or maybe the developers just wanted to do something different.
And that’s all the analysis and theory!

FEMALE CHARACTERS APPRECIATION
Tumblr media
Catherine is an iconic character and you find yourself becoming so engaged with her character. Though, she is a serial killer and a psychopath and clearly done up for the male fantasy. She knows how to manipulate men and is so charming and she has some very deep and raw moments. all though I think it’s dumb how the movie expects us to believe that she would turn good for a mess like Nick. But I guess it shows that when she wants something, she gets it. 8/10. Her ending is just kinda dumb and also she's apart of the male fantasy. she’s rich, hot, smart, has sex with girls and wears no underwear.
Tumblr media
Margot Robbie is a national treasure and no one can change my mind on that. Harley Quinn was the best part of the lukewarm half-baked movi called sucide squad. and she is in love with the joker and was manipulated into changing herself for him. I find her backstory fascinating she is so cool and crazy. Robbie did her best with what she was given in that ridiculous costume. she becomes more of an individual in birds of prey and less of Jokers girlfriend. she has so much character development and still stays awesome and amazing. 8.5/10 she would be a ten. But she is in an abusive relationship that she has yet to admit was abusive and she changed it all for a fucking guy.
Tumblr media
Claire is such a darling in this movie and although her character “the princess” is pretty one dimensional (yes I know that's the whole point of the movie but Thi is my post bitch) Ringwald gives such style to the role and I even know a lot of girls like her. Claire throughout the movie starts to see more then just daddy's money and what her friends want and she even falls in love with the bad boy who is everything she isn't and she is just all around amazing!!! 7/10
Tumblr media
Veronica is everything I'm tryna be. She has a lot of individuality even though she is technically apart of the popular girls who are so vanilla that they all have the same name. She is also a character that aged well unlike the last two. She was manipulated by her psycho yet super hot and cool boyfriend to partake in some murders. and I don’t blame her for not telling anyone because she would get in trouble as well. Her relationship with JD is pretty toxic but I admittedly romanticise them a- I have a very vivid fantasy life lol. anyway I give her a solid 9/10.
Tumblr media
Hermione is a generation defining female icon. she was highly intelligent even when she was just a kid and no one would get shit done without her. it was heartbreaking when she had to erase herself from her birth parents memory. I find it odd that she went for a boy as idiotic and mediocre as Ron. (okay no hate to Ron because he is so loveable and cool but you get it what I’m tryna say) I am a dramione shipper for life boiii. I found it kinda stupid how they decided to make her all weepy and weak about Ron and shit like come on! anyway I give her a 10/10
Tumblr media
young Bev is so great. yeah she's always just reduced to the girl of the group that all the boys wanna fuck but Sophia Lillis gives her some depth and flare to the role her introduction shows us that she is very alone in the girl world and she is known as the slut and then we see her abusive creepy dad. throughout the movie, we see her be one of the boys and starts budding romance with both Ben and Bill and I prefer Bill and Bev but okayyy. she is funny, cool and is just a joy to watch. book Bev..she didn't rape Eddie!  6.5/10
Tumblr media
The bride is a badass bitch who is hunting down her baby daddy while killing an extra...600 people in the process. I like how her sexuality is never mentioned. or she's in a jumpsuit and not lingerie. along with Tarantino's genius dialogue and cinematography. the bride is literally a female powerhouse warrior and when we have the enevitable gender war. we will make sure the bride is in the front. 9.5/10
Tumblr media
Alabama is a sweetheart and I like that she’s not defined by Clarence. Although I might do a separate post on their relationship. Patrica Arquette plays her sp well because she is such a golden hearted sweet heart who will do anything for Clarence. her fight with that guy was so awesome because it shows that she aint weak and would die for Clarence. ugh I love her!!! 7/10
Tumblr media
girl interrupted is one of my favourite movies and Lisa Rowe is the main reason why! she fits into the cool crazy women trope and she steals the show. Jolie rightfully won the Oscar, she is charismatic, cool, evil she is a psychopath but..who cares lol. she has the best dialogue “I’m playing the villain baby, just like you wanted.” “she gave your husband a rim job, so fucking what?” she did drive Britney Murphy’s character to sucide so FUCK HER! 8.5/10

Bruce Campbell talks ‘Evil Dead,’ ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Xena’
mm
The first time Bruce Campbell came across Sam Raimi, they were students at Michigan’s West Maple Junior High School.
“Sam was a year younger than me,” Campbell recalls, “and I remember him dressed as Sherlock Holmes playing with dolls in the middle of the floor. And I remember going way around him. And I found out later that it was Sam Raimi. We didn’t really come into contact until we got until high school.”
What a connection they made. After bonding over D.I.Y. filmmaking, Campbell and Raimi went on to do 1978 shoestring horror-short “Within the Woods” together, which they evolved into 1981 demonic thriller “Evil Dead.”
Campbell would periodically reprise signature “Evil Dead” character Ash Williams in various sequels and offshoots. And appear in Raimi-produced “Xena: Warrior Princess,” portraying slippery “king of thieves” Autolycus on that ’90s-iconic TV fantasy epic.
And then there’s Campbell’s memorable cameos in Raimi’s blockbuster, Tobey Maguire-starring “Spider-Man” film trilogy: the ring announced in the first, 2002 film, “snooty usher” in the 2004 sequel and a maître d’ in 2007′s “Spider-Man 3.”
Of course, Campbell’s made a mark outside that dynamic duo. He drew raves for his portrayal of a nursing-home-bound Elvis Presley in 2002 indie comedy-horror gem, “Bubba Ho-Tep.” Then there’s his role of Sam Axe on USA Network spy drama “Burn Notice.” Not to mention numerous other film, TV, voice acting and even video-game work.
The cult-fave actor will make his first ever trip to Huntsville this week, for Oct. 24 events at Von Braun Center’s Mark C. Smith Concert Hall featuring “Evil Dead” screenings followed by a Campbell-led chat about the film, his life as an actor and beyond. Tickets for these 3 and 7:30 p.m. events start at $32, via ticketmaster.com.
His upcoming projects include a comedy album with actor Ted Raimi, Sam’s brother, called “The Lost Recordings.” Campbell also is readying a book of essays called “The Cool Side of My Pillow,” which finds him riffing on subjects ranging from noise to the environment. He hopes to have both released by the end of this year. More info at bruce-campbell.com. On a recent afternoon, Campbell checked in from his Oregon home for a phone interview. Edited excerpts are below.
Bruce, when you do an “Evil Dead” screening event, do your discussions turn up new things about the film or that you haven’t thought of in a long time?
Every show turns up something new because it puts you on the spot. Someone will say something that will then trigger something that you had forgot. I just sat down the other day before one of these shows with my guy who is my frontman and I was like, “OK, l’m just going to tell the story of making this movie.” It’s not for questions I’m just going to tell you basically what you’re about to see. But yeah, every show triggers some new thing. I’ve seen the movie. I know how it ends. But that is the challenge, finding some new, weird tidbits.
Back in high school how did you and Sam Raimi first bond? Did you share a class or something?
Basically I got into typing class, that’s what started it. I could not believe I was stuck in this stupid class where everyone around me seemed to know how to type. I’m like, “How do you know this?” It was very frustrating. So I went to a counselor for the first time ever – I’d never gone to try to get out of anything.
So I go there and I say, “Hey can I drop this dumb typing class?” She goes, "Yeah, what do you want? I go, “What do you got?” So she comes up with “radio speech.” And I’m like, “Radio speech? Wait they do the morning announcements (at school) and stuff?” and I’m like yeah let me get all over that.
So I got into a class and Sam Raimi was also in the class. And the guy who taught radio speech also directed all the plays. We didn’t know how critical that was. The first year I couldn’t get in anything in my high school. I was auditioning for everything but I didn’t have a class with this guy. By the next year I had a class with him, and then me and Sam were in basically all the plays after that. We found out how the deal worked.
So I met him in radio speech and we’d do the morning announcements together and got to talking about what we do in our neighborhoods. I was making little regular-8 (millimeter film) movies and Sam was making Super-8 movies. So we started to join forces during the course of that high school run, that two or three years in there.
We were very productive. We didn’t really get into trouble because we were too busy like filming parties. We wouldn’t go to the parties we’d film the parties and use them in some way in our little films so it was a great guerrilla filmmaking period.
A celeb or well-known person you were surprised to learn they’re an “Evil Dead” fan?
I heard Charlie Sheen, one of his favorite things was to smoke a doobie and watch “Evil Dead 2,” and Alice Cooper’s favorite horror movie is “Evil Dead.”
If it’s good enough for Alice Cooper it’s good enough for me. You host the quiz show “Last Fan Standing.” What do you make of the mainstreaming of nerd-culture?
Every generation has its deal. In the ’40s most moviegoers were in their 40s and so the actors were in their 40s. Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy and all the guys were in their 40s. You didn’t have to be 21. And then as the audience got younger the actors got younger and the people who run the companies get younger and so they’re really just catering to what’s popular.
Comic books have always been popular but now they’re really popular. Not really sure what that’s all about but yeah social media has certainly helped but I think it’s another form of escapism. Whenever times get weird, people want escapism. During The Depression they did the Busby Berkeley splashy musicals where everyone was happy all the time, when life was really miserable. And some decades where we’re really doing okay, the movies turned introspective and we go after ourselves and figure out why we’re like this and like that. And so I think we’re in a phase where we just want to be taken away to another galaxy and Marvel is very happy to help.
And you’ve been a part of that. In Sam’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, which of your cameos did you have the most fun with?
Well I don’t know it’s hard to lineate because they’re so critical. The first one I named Spider-Man. If I wasn’t in the movie a billion dollar franchise would be called The Human Spider. He wants to get in the theater in the second one, past the snooty usher who won’t let him in because he’s late, because it will spoil the illusion, so I think I’m technically the only character who’s ever defeated Spider-Man. And in part three, a superhero comes to a mortal for help. He wants me to help him propose to his girlfriend so it’s sort of a landmark case where a superhero goes to a mortal for help which is pretty rare. So I can’t delineate because they’re all critical to the “Spider-Man” universe.
Do you have any cool mementos from "Evil Dead or elsewhere from your career? Maybe something like the chainsaw from “Evil Dead 2”?
You know, it’s weird I’m not a hoarder, I’m not a collector. My brother, he has the shotgun from “Evil Dead,” but not because he loves movie trivia, he just likes guns. My brother also has I think the set of keys to the original cabin. That’s a pretty good one. Not sure how he got that one.
I have weirder ones. Like I have a prop from a 1989 movie called “Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat.” I have Van Helsing’s holy bottle where he shakes the holy water at them. And I have what I call my tchotchke shelf, where most people would look at it and they couldn’t identify what importance each item is, but there’s a story for each one.
Some of your favorite actors outside the horror genre?
Oh, I l love a lot of the old time actors. William Holden, he starred in “Bridge on The River Kwai” one of my favorite movies. I like the guys who had to work a lot. In the old days and actor would finish a job on Friday he was under contract, he took two weeks off and started a new movie a couple weeks later. Actors kind of just do one or two movies a year if they’re lucky these days and it doesn’t help them refine their craft.
I feel like the guys who worked a lot got good because they got really used to the process. I’m a fan of the studio system. Not all movies were good and not every actor was happy under the studio system, but I think a busy actor’s a good actor.
For your role in “Bubba Ho-Tep,” what was your process for tapping into Elvis’s vibe?
What guy doesn’t want to be Elvis, you know? So I worked with an Elvis impersonator for about a half an hour and then he gave up on me. He goes, “Look, man, you’re never going to get it.” I’m like, “Wow either I suck or you suck as a teacher but somebody here sucks.”
No, but I watched a bunch of footage and documentaries. There’s a good one, all his Memphis Mafia who worked with him, a filmmaker basically got them all drunk one night and interviewed them all and that’s where the good stories are. You learn a little more of the human side of him. But that’s pretty much it. I’ve never been a stage performer so mercifully there wasn’t that much of it, just in quick flashbacks.
And there’s a part of me, in the back of my mind, I want to know that Elvis' descendants, somebody, a daughter, niece, somebody has watched that movie and approved. We’ll see.
I thought it was a cool creative take on that whole Elvis thing.
I agree. That’s why I did it. It was one of the weirdest scripts I’ve ever read But yet it wraps up though. It has a weird premise but it has a really interesting theme of what do you do with old people. Do we forget these old people? And are they still useful in society, old people? And I thought it had a sweet ending, that these two old guys they kind of rally themselves one more time.
What’s a well-known role you’ve turned down?
Turned down? I don’t have a lot of those. I don’t operate in that rarified air of saying, “Oh I turned ‘Titanic’ down.” I tried to get a part in a studio movie called “The Phantom” and Billy Zane wound up getting the part." And it was down to me and Billy, I was number two for the job, but I didn’t really enjoy the process very much because it seemed more political than actually acting. It was amazing how many people you had to audition for, and you had to go up the ranks and each time it got a little more tense as you move up. So I’m good doing these weirdo little movies.
I read the budget for “Within the Woods,” the predecessor of “Evil Dead,” was a princely 1,600 bucks. What was the most expensive line item, you think?
Food and probably fake blood. Tom Sullivan, who did the special effects, probably needed to mold a few things, so he probably spent a couple hundred bucks on molds. A lot of it was footage because Sam Raimi likes to shoot footage, so we probably bought a lot of rolls of film. And we did go to a cabin to shoot it, so had to get in the car and travel so maybe a little gas money in there too. That’s about it.
What can you tell us about the status of the next installment of the “Evil Dead” franchise?
We’re honing-in, circling the building now trying to lock in a partner. We have a couple of bidders and we’re trying to just find the correct suitor and we have a script written and a director picked. Sam Raimi hand -picked a guy named Lee Cronin, who’s a very good Irish filmmaker. And it’s got a very good modern tale. It’s a modern-day urban “Evil Dead,” it’s called “Evil Dead Rise.” And we’re hoping to do that next year.
You were a producer on 2013 “Evil Dead” remake. What’s the key to making a reboot effective?
Well rebooting can be very confusing and frustrating and not always successful. Reboot, sequel, remake we have all these crazy terms. What we’re doing now is we’re saying," Look, this is another ‘Evil Dead’ movie and that book gets around, a lot of people run into it and it’s another story." The main key with “Evil Dead” is they’re just regular people who are battling what seems to be a very unstoppable evil, and so that’s where the horror comes from. It’s not someone who’s skilled. They’re not fighting a soldier. They’re not fighting a scientist. They’re not fighting anybody more than your average neighbor. This one is going to be a similar thing. We’re going to have a heroine, a woman in charge, and she’s going to try and save her family.
Speaking of a female protagonist, when you’re at a con or meet fans somewhere, who has the most passionate superfans: “Evil Dead” or “Xena”?
“Xena” hits them at an emotional level. Like, they’ll come up to me and Lucy Lawless (the actor who played the show’s title role) and just burst into tears, because her character helped them get through a difficult time. “Xena” is more representative of overcoming your struggles in life. “Evil Dead” fans are pretty fervent but they don’t cry as much.
