you know what, since we've been talking about how annoying it is when people react like "what drugs were they on when they wrote this 馃お" when someone is creative, i just wanna say
everyone who says "HOW IS THIS A KIDS' MOVIE 馃槺馃槺", when a kids' movie is a little bit out of the box and features dark or deep imagery and meanings, owes me one thousand euros

One Dress a Day Challenge
August: Fantasy & Sci-Fi
Return to Oz / Jean Marsh as Mombi and Sophie Ward as Mombi II
I was lucky enough to grow up in a town whose library had a nearly complete collection of the Oz books, so of course I remembered Princess Langwidere and her collection of heads! It was great to see that onscreen, even though they merged the characters of Langwidere and Mombi.
In the book, she only wore a simple white dress, as changing her head gave her all the variety she wanted. But I think the burgundy-and-plum gown created for the movie by designer Raymond Hughes is gorgeous, with its iridescent patches and art nouveau swirls. A particularly interesting feature is the rack of golden splinters trailing back from the shoulders, almost like they're trying to form into fairy wings but aren't quite complete.

We need to bring back 80's style fantasy movies ASAP, it's the only way we can save cinema!
Grab a bunch of special effect makeup artists, synth music, hyper realistic puppets, matte paintings, scale models, and most importantly, a pop rock band that simply will never make it to compose the theme song based on just the title of the movie and nothing more.
Quick, guys, we need to save cinema!

He knows he's being cute. Dashemoff's costume is, of course, that of a Wheeler (from Ozma of Oz), color adjusted for Emerald City.

Return to Oz (1985). Dorothy, saved from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl, is somehow called back to Oz when a vain witch and the Nome King destroy everything that makes the magical land beautiful.
HOW has this film escaped the legacy of children's horror masterpieces like聽The Dark Crystal聽and聽The Witches? I had pretty low expectations going in, but it really leans into the horror of its setting and lets Dorothy grow and regress in equal measure. Plus the stop motion and puppetry and practical effects are pretty awesome. Yeah, it's flawed, but man, I think I would've been obsessed with this if I'd watched it when I was聽9. 7.5/10.

It's September 1st, so it's officially autumn, and just the time for me to show you my new crochet patterns. I've created a pair of cute little Pumpkinhead characters for you to make, a Witch and a Scarecrow. They're only about 11 cm/4.5" tall (the Witch is a bit bigger because of her hat), so they're not too scary, but they are perfect little friends for Halloween.
The patterns are available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops:

I will never understand people who grew up when Return to Oz came out saying the wheelers traumatized them. Yeah the movie was dark but this what they looked like in the book. This is what you could have gotten.

I do hope that if The Wizard of Oz is ever adapted again in any form, I want it to have the 1939 Wizard's tone combined with Return to Oz's technological sensibilities.
