His look was really not bad. I just hated the story of the movie.

Coeli's Picks: Men, part 3 (Dishonorable Mention)
Just in time for April Fool's Day, here are some truly eyebrow-raising and head-scratching costumes. I know neither of these shows had a huge budget, but that's no excuse.
Coeli's comments:
"If I had to look at them, so do you!"
Blake's 7 (s4e4, "Stardrive")
"Punk space pirates who totally fail to come across as menacing:"

The Young Victoria / Miranda Richardson as the Duchess of Kent
*Is she having a bad time? Yes. (She gets publicly humiliated by the king at dinner. Not that she doesn't deserve it, at least up to a point.)
Honestly, I can't decide whether I like 1830s styles or not. Sometimes they're a case of "more is more," and sometimes they're just too far over the top. But I do think this dress is one of the more attractive examples of the style. The contrasting fabrics and embroidery make it visually interesting, and the silhouette is almost 17th-century. Not having an exaggerated bonnet probably helps. The dress also has a long train, as you can see in the second picture, where it's being carried behind her.

Not-a-Dress November
Ice Fantasy / Victoria Song as Li Luo
Li Luo is our unicorn-riding, whip-wielding, pterodactyl-shooting action gal heroine--one of the mortal guardians of the immortal border realm. As such, she's dressed for action--at least for the first half of the show, before Things Happen. Usually she wears scale mail, but this is her backup, slightly fancier leather outfit. I'd be tempted to call it her dress uniform, but she's still armed to the teeth between the dagger in the belt, the holstered firearm, and the cuffs full of throwing knives.
Under the coat, she seems to be wearing a fancy beaded tunic over brown leggings and boots. A decorative braided and beaded leather headband is the finishing touch.

The Men of September
Casablanca / Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine
Ah, Casablanca. I'm firmly convinced that Humphrey Bogart's look in this movie is the main reason why the white dinner jacket or "warm weather tuxedo" remains a staple of quality menswear. This model is double-breasted and just a tiny bit darker than the shirt, suggesting that it might be pale cream or ivory rather than pure white.
As a bonus, we've got Claude Rains as Captain Renault and Dooley Wilson as Sam, both looking pretty dapper as well. Check out the paisleys on Sam's tie!
Orry-Kelly did the gowns for this movie, but whoever dressed the men is uncredited. That person deserves much praise, whoever it was!

June: Weddings
Singh is Kinng / Katrina Kaif as Sonia
This garment (specifically, the skirt) is called a lehenga. Various websites describe this one as "contemporary" and "western-influenced," and the use of teal is apparently a notable feature.
(Saw this movie years ago when I was making a project of watching multiple versions of the Damon Runyon story "Madam La Gimp." I started with the original Lady for a Day and then went on to Pocketful of Miracles, Mr. Canton and Lady Rose--aka Miracles, aka Black Dragon--and finally, Singh is Kinng.)
Sadly, I couldn't find a high-def source for the movie, and we never get a really good full-length look at the outfit during the film itself. We have to rely on publicity shots for that. But here's a close-up of the embroidery and beading on both Sonia's skirt and the groom's coat.

Darling Lili / Julie Andrews as Lili Schmidt
*Is she having a bad time? No. (She's making progress on her mission and having a pleasant date too.)
Only one picture because this outfit is the definition of "blink and you'll miss it." It appears during a montage of Lili and Bill going on a series of dates as she attempts to seduce him for his military secrets (and, of course, winds up falling for him).
It's the contrast of the strong, saturated green with soft, creamy white that really makes this outfit for me. I've always liked that combination of colors.

Multicolored August
The Avengers / Nicola Pagett as Lady Adriana Beardsley
Aka "When your big bad is a groovy chick." This seems to be a sheer poncho worn over a minidress--you can see the spaghetti straps at the shoulders faintly through the material. The outer layer has more pink and yellow tones, while the underlayer seems to be mostly blue.
The turquoise maribu edging is ... certainly a thing that happened.

Tea and Sympathy / Deborah Kerr as Laura Reynolds
*Is she having a bad time? I haven't actually seen this movie, but I'm going to say yes. (When searching for pictures, I found several shots of her crying or looking upset in the dress.)
To be honest, I like this dress better on the display mannequin, with the sleeves up a bit, rather than the just-off-the-shoulder look. But I know that it was intended to be worn as it is in the movie! It's hard to find a shot with a clear view of both shoulders, but she appears to be wearing one dress clip, on the right side only.
I like the subtle, irregular spot pattern. I also really like the color, especially as it appears in the movie shots, where it seems a bit deeper and bluer. I'm not sure whether that is due to color processing on the film or whether the actual dress has changed color a little due to time.

Monochrome July
Top Hat / Helen Broderick as Madge Hardwick
Ginger Rogers, in this scene, is wearing possibly my least favorite costume she ever had--I just think that neckline does her no favors--but fortunately, Helen Broderick is there to pick up the slack with this rather fascinating tunic dress. I like the leafy design, the boat neck, the pointed cuffs, and the layered effect of it. The tricorne hat with pompom is a fun way to finish it off.

January: Red Redux
Marcel Proust's Time Regained (Le temps retrouvé, d'après l'oeuvre de Marcel Proust) / Emmanuelle Béart as Gilberte
This gorgeous dress is one of @coeli1000's finds. I love the asymmetrical beaded design, with each shoulder being slightly different. The multilayered, drapey effect of the skirt is also interesting, leading to the whole garment looking unified and yet full of variety.
I also appreciate how they've made an effort to give her at least somewhat period-style makeup. The darkening around the eyes and the bold color of the lipstick make her look like a silent film star. Just look at a black-and-white version (below) and you'll see what I mean.

And that beaded turban is quite something! I wonder if the traditional headdresses for the mimas (priestesses) in Carnival Row were based on this sort of turban, possibly even inspired by this movie.

Anything Goes December
Monster Hunt 2 / Bai Baihe as Huo Xiaolan and Jing Boran as Song Tianyin
I love how the costumes of the two main characters complement each other. They're strongly color-coded, with her in red and him in blue, but each one is wearing several layers of different patterns and textures.
I considered featuring one or both of these costumes individually during one of the appropriate months, but they work so well as a pair that I'm happy to cover them as a pair!

Emma / Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse
*Is she having a bad time? Yes. (She's wearing this in the scene where she gets told off by Mr. Knightley.)
I know this production in general and the costumes in particular are controversial, but I can't help it--I have an enormous soft spot for this version of Emma, and the costumes are part of it.
One thing I'm realizing in this project is that I really like the effect of a sheer, patterned overlay over a colored base. In this case, it keeps the green quite subtle unless you see it full-length. The main accents come from the bow in front, the edging around the neckline, and the light wrap that goes with it.

Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries ("Come Die with Me") / Geraldine Hakewill as Peregrine Fisher
Peregrine wears this dress to an event she's feeling conflicted about. I suspect the black-and-white dress may be a bit symbolic!

The Men of September
Love Me Tonight / Maurice Chevalier as Maurice Courtelin
This is the earliest movie I've ever seen with a suit-and-turtleneck combination. It is Maurice's everyday casual outfit for walking to work; later, he wears it to a fancy dress party at the castle, where the aristocratic crowd thinks he's just ever so exotic!
Note, on the back view, that the jacket has no vents (slits) in the back. This was common in the 1920s, as it created a smoother line. This movie is from 1932, but sticks to a more conservative style in that regard.

May: Purple Redux
The Good Place (s2e4, "Existential Crisis") / Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil
Tahani is definitely a fan of the strapless maxidress, and this one also has her signature floral pattern. The decoration around the bust and down the front appears to be a combination of applique and beading over a base of black or very deep purple. The skirt has white flowers on a sheer layer over a deeper purple base with black leaf and vine designs. When moving outdoors, she adds a light wrap.
Interestingly, although many of the outfits featured on this show came from known designers, I couldn't find this dress on any of the "worn on TV" sites. It may have been an original creation.
