The Palestinian Youth Movement interrupts Olivia Chow's neoliberalized, superficial 'iftar' reception to demand a firm stance on the genocide of Palestinians, and to end her complicity in it.

One of the many reasons that the 1930s and 1940s were a golden age for New York is its legendary mayor, Fiorello H. LaGuardia. Irascible, energetic, funny, polylingual, authoritarian, and deeply humane, he delivered the city government from Tammany Hall, built significant new infrastructure, and gave a voice to ethnic and racial minorities. Here, he assumes his duties for the first of his three terms, getting a good-luck handshake from his predecessor, John P. O'Brien, in the mayor's chambers in City Hall, January 1, 1934.

(long rant incoming)
the first even transgender town council member in israel was elected in kiryat tivon yesterday!! and while this is a huge win for diversity, inclusivity and human rights, somehow even cishet white men from gaza and the west bank can’t vote. and palestinians from jerusalem still can’t vote for the government election, only municipal election!! even though the government (and for some the local council) still govern them. but in their(israeli government and other political institutions) eyes palestinians don’t count, because they’re not part of this land that we call israel, and they’re under military law instead of civilian law.
yesterday, the day of the election, i was part of a protest, a protest against the bombing of gaza, a protest for peace, a protest for releasing the hostages diplomatically, a protest for palestinian’s right to be alive.
the protest was small, and only one hour, but in that hour while the organizer read stories of survivors from gaza, depicting immoral psychological warfare and warcrimes committed by IDF soldiers, people passing by mocked us, yelled at us, cursed us, tried to argue that all of that is somehow excused and moral.
after the protest, and after we all separated into smaller groups, and went in different directions, (in order to not get targeted alone). IDF soldiers who were nearby, together with civilians, ripped photos of palestinians dying that we put up at the start of the protest. within half an hour there was nothing left, not even the strings that we hanged the photos from.
the public knows what happening in gaza, they deliberately ignore it and deny it. because accepting it would means accepting the fact that they supported the IDF, they supported the bombing of gaza, they supported and almost all of them even took part in a genocide.(in Israel, we have a mandatory military service law, which is hard to get around, and it is very common for people who do get an exempt due to medical conditions to volunteer in the military instead)
i am not scared of the truth anymore, so im going to say it. just like many others, i used to support the IDF, i used to want to join the IDF, i used to support the genocide, thinking its just to eradicate the terrorist group called hamas, thinking it was to protect us and defend, and thinking the IDF is doing everything possible to minimize collateral damage.
but with the years, every attack, every death, every news article, i came to the conclusion that so many people tried to yell at me.
at first i denied it and found excuses, then i agreed with it but watered it down and said its exaggerated. but eventually i ran out of excuses and left facing the truth. at that point i had an option, continue being complicit with the IDF knowing i support genocide, or accepting the truth and working to stop it.
my choice was obvious to me, i saw only one moral choice. unfortunately, for most israelis, the fog of propaganda is so thick that they don’t even get to have that choice, and those who do, usually choose to be complicit with the genocide out of patriotism, religious fascism or the sheer horror and existential crisis that is accepting the truth.
if there’s anything you take from this ramble of word soup, i want it to be this. think about who’s the person you’re talking to, and what mental gymnastics they were forced to go through. keep that in mind and adjust your conversation to accommodate that. the truth isn’t visible in the fog of propaganda that israeli civilians are bombarded with since birth.
if you call israel apartheid or say its a genocide you probably already lost in this discourse. they will shut their ears and won’t listen to you, thinking anything you say is hamas lies.
instead, try to walk with them, understand their train of thoughts, get to the core reasons they refuse to accept the truth and help them tackling the core of their reasoning.
they might run away from the conversation, refuse to deal with whatever they just unraveled, but in that case, you won, and pushed them one step closer to the truth.
and most importantly, don’t forget to give them resources that can help them with the next steps, we have a bunch of israeli based organizations that do exactly that, breaking the silence, eyes on the occupation, standing together, all that’s left, gush neged kibush, just to name a few. and good luck!

Voting accomplished ✌️ I was #36 at my polling location. By contrast, during statewide elections, I'm often in the 200s.
Turn out for your tiny local elections...the smaller the election, the more weight your vote has.

"WILL ENGAGE A PAVING EXPERT," Kingston Daily Standard. March 18, 1913. Page 2. --- Board of Works Will Get Advice. --- In View of Exceptional Work in Connection With Rails This Step Will be Taken. --- The City Council at its regular meeting last night decided to engage the services of an expert engineer, to prepare the plans and give expert advice in regard to the paving of King and Princess streets. In view of the fact that the department of the City Engineer is so limited, and that there are very few men in Canada who are expert in the matter of paving in connection with street railway tracks, it was considered adviseable by the Board of Works to secure an acknowledged expert on this subject before the Council took any definite step in the matter.
This matter was brought to the attention of the members of Council in a report which was made by the Board of Works subsequent to the re- gular report, and which was not in printed form. This was a matter of comment by Mayor Rigney, who pointed out that the procedure was any- thing like businesslike. He intimated that the Board had since Thursday last to prepare its report and that there was no excuse for it bringing the matter to the attention of Council in this form. He stated that it was not fair to Council to expect the members to grasp the meaning of a report from the reading of the secretary. He advised the chairman to obey the rules of Council in this regard.
Ald. Fair explained that the matter had been brought up at a meeting subsequent to the regular meeting and that there had been no time to embody it in the regular report. In reply to questions he stated that it was estimated that the cost of such expert advice as was required. would be in the neighborhood of $200 and expenses, the expenses not to exceed about $65. The chairman pointed out that the Board had. thought this action advisable in view of the unusual expenditure and in consideration of the fact that the engineering staff was very limited.
This clause was passed without further discussion.
The City Council also adopted the recommendation of the Board of Works in regard to the paving program for the year. The following streets are to be paved with a permanent pavement on a concrete base Johnson street from Ontario to Wellington street; King street from Clarence to William street; and Wellington street, from Clarence to William street.
The Council last year passed on the laying of an asphaltic macadam roadway on Wellington street to the Park and this will be proceeded with this year in conjunction with the continuation of the work on Barrie street, from Union street to Princess street.

“I’m an immigrant who was elected five years after becoming a US citizen, I’m a woman who’s five two on a good day, and I don’t straighten my hair, and I was elected at 27. All that means someone else—someone from whatever background—can do whatever it is they want to do.”—Judge Lina Hidalgo

Sustainable Development Goals: A student occupational therapist’s perspective.
As a student occupational therapist who is currently on community block. I found myself placed in this community in Durban—a community with life, strong citizens, and lots of challenges. There is a high unemployment rate, many developmentally delayed children, and a concerning number of HIV among women. As I am working with clients from this community, I intend to work toward these sustainable goals:
Accessible and inclusive Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs. This is because the foundation of a child’s development is laid during the early years. In this community where developmental delays have a high rate, I think this program will be useful. This program will not only improve cognitive and social skills in a child but also help parents with knowledge. Whenever I am at the primary in the community, during break time I observe how happy and exploring these kids are through play and I’m reminded of the potential these young ones have that we need to nurture it from an early age.
Tumblr media
I also intend to do vocational training and employment opportunities (decent work and economic growth). Unemployment has high rates in Kenville just like the whole of South Africa. To break this cycle, there are already vocational training programs started by occupational therapy students, like the sewing classes that intend to equip community members especially women with practical skills. There is also a group created that intends to equip community members with the application, interview, and resume writing skills to make job hunting easy.
Tumblr media
All these challenges community members face in their daily lives have an impact on their mental health. Poverty, unemployment, and health challenges all impact Kenville citizens mentally. I think mental health support is needed for these citizens. Support groups can become a safe place where they can share stories and get some strength and support from their community members. So mental health support and awareness will be a good value to this community. Our role as occupational therapists is also about breaking the silence around mental health.
Regarding the rates of HIV+ women in the community, I’m doing my practical demands and intervention as soon as possible. The SDG I intend to work toward in this case is good health and well-being specially focusing on Women’s Health and HIV Prevention. I wish we could advocate for a comprehensive reproductive health service that will emphasize prevention and education. Women do not need to find only medical care in clinics but also the place where they reclaim control over their health.
Tumblr media
My final sustainable goal is to create a sustainable environmental practice. This can be achieved through eco-friendly practices. We can have a community garden that can provide for families that have no income. Instead of throwing away plastic bags and other recyclable goods to make money and create job opportunities through making creative objects that can be sold and in that manner our environment is clean, and we are generating income.
Tumblr media
The Integrated Development Plan (IDP) is a strategic document that outlines the municipality’s development priorities. In Kenville, aligning our local goals with the IDP ensures coordinated efforts across sectors. For instance, the IDP emphasizes spatial transformation and renewal, which can improve the ECD programs and vocational training initiatives. Creating economic opportunities is important. Policies supporting local businesses, job creation, and skills development directly impact unemployment rates. Our vocational training programs can align with these strategies, empowering community members.
As I end this post, I invite you, dear reader, to join us. Whether you’re a parent, a neighbor, or a dreamer—you matter. Let’s nurture sustainable change, one goal at a time. Together, we’ll write a story of survival, hope, and transformation.

PORTRAIT OF THE CITY HALL  // Leonard Cohen
The diamonds of guilt   The scrolls of guilt   The pillars of guilt   The colours of guilt   The flags of guilt   The gargoyles of guilt   The spines of guilt   Listen, says the mayor, listen to the woodland birds.   They are singing like men in chains.

We don't just need to bring back mixed-use zoning, we also need to bring back corner stores where the owner lives on the second floor. Heck, I'm pretty sure that's the only way to prevent mixed-use zones from being cannibalised by corporate horseshit in our present climate: only allow businesses which are also the owner's primary residence.

Three weeks after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith highlighted a letter that raised concerns about the City of Edmonton, a Freedom of Information Request has failed to find the document.
On March 27, Smith told reporters she had various concerns about the City of Edmonton.
She did not get into details aside from saying the city is dealing with significant financial troubles, something Edmonton city council has been open about.
Smith did say some of her concerns stemmed from hearing that a letter was being sent to the minister of Municipal Affairs.
“I don’t want to pre-judge what may or may not be in a letter that we’ve been told that we’ll receive,” the premier told reporters. [...]

Terrifying election results. The anti-lockdown, pro-urban-sprawl candidate for regional chair got 21% of the vote (don’t worry, he didn’t get in), the top-ranked red-flag school board candidate was within 3% of the lowest-ranked “vote for these people to avoid the alt-right takeover” candidate (although it was almost 5% of who got in). 27% voter turnout probably has a fair bit to do with that though.
And I’m hoping that the guy for chair was because he had the best website (as in it actually had a platform on it) of all three candidates, and you had to click through to see his positions on stuff, he didn’t introduce himself with “I’m running because the region has been out of control, what with making us wear masks”, so some people probably voted for him either as a general protest against council or because neither the incumbent or the other candidate had a clearly laid-out platform on their site.

"Reid and Nickle." Daily British Whig (Kingston). May 28, 1913. Page 6. --- Ald. Fair asked that J. F. Reid, the contractor who had done such good work for the city, be heard. The council agreed, and Mr. Reid addressed it. He stated that he was not there to knock any pavement. Every company had some bad pave- ment, and was constantly working to improve quality and workmanship. After fixing several pavements under the company's guarantee, it found that the pavement was too hard, hence it had to be fluxed. The company had been trying to get a pavement suitable to this climate. The limestone dust which goes into the block had to be permeated with asphaltic oil, to overcome the trouble. Brandon was satisfied with the block pavement. In Calgary it had given satisfaction. In Walkerville, after nine years, the block had worn only a quarter of an moh in the busiest street. There was no paving company which did not have bad streets. It all depends upon the method of laying the pavement, Mr. Reid said.
Ald. Ross said that in Toronto he had seen the tearing up of all kinds of pavement.
To Ald. Ross, Mr. Reid said he did not think that the pavement that has been down in Kingston nearly two years had been worn at all.
Ald. Ross said that this was the mportant question. It was Kingston's pavement that had to be considered, and how the blocks were worn-not those in Toronto.
Mr. Reld said he would be glad to take up a few blocks for the Board of Works, and show them just how they were worn.
H. C. Nickle was also asked to address the council, and he told of his visit to Toronto and securing several specimens of worn asphalt blocks which were laid on the track allowance. The blocks he secured were not the blocks against the rails, but from a place that received the least travel.
Mr. Nickle gave some other information concerning asphalt blocks. He and Ald. Fair got into a dispute over a report on road paving issued by the United States department of agriculture, and from which Mr. Nickle stated Ald. Fair, had made a false statement in the press. Ald. Fair borrowed the report from Mr. Nickle and then argued to the council that his statement was correct with regard to asphalt pavement being awarded the highest mark according to efficiency and cost. Mr. Nickle disputed Ald. Fair's interpre tation and then the discussion ended with the vote on the motion to reconsider the tender award, which resulted.
