im so glad colin and bradley didnt randomly age in their appearances a whole lot throughout the show, because despite time passing arthur and merlin, though older, still hold a sense of pureness and youth to them and THAT is what kills me. Idc how old they are, theyre just kids trying their best. Idc same with morgana, she looks so young, they all do, not child like but not like an adult who knows what theyre doing.
Theyre all just kids trying their best in a world where adults are constantly telling them whats right and wrong and it breaks my heart.
Like youre telling me when arthur gets stabbed he doesnt look like just a boy? He doesnt radiate man who has has the experience of a lifetime, none of them do, theyre all just about to start their lives and yet theyre faced with the world against them.
As arthur dying in merlins arms, theyre just kids. Theyre just two boys, one whose mothers far away and the other whose fathers long gone, both trying to figure out how to live. Both stuck in situations far too mature for them. It almost feels like throughout the show an adult needs to step in, like what do you mean arthur has all this responsibility? Hes just A BOY???
Dont bc they’re literally all just kids and it makes me sad

s3 morgana being "beyond redemption" is soooooo crazy to me like yeah trying to kill the evil tyrant king whos been murdering every last one of your kind is sooooo evil lock her up and throw away the key!!
such a prime example of a kick the dog character too. like they cant condemn her for just fighting for her right to exist so they have her executing civilians and trying to have gwen executed to make her into the villian.
and! the same goes for morgause! literally what did she ever do wrong? uther conquered camelot (said by him in the episode where gili fights in the tournament) and then executed hundreds if not thousands of people with magic but morgause trying to kill the king is a step too far? why? its almost like the show is actually on uthers side 🤨🤨🤨🤨
which leads me to: the fact that we essentially watch the entire show through the pendragon perspective. merlin protects arthur so everything we learn about the purge and magic and the old religion is from uther/gaius. so, biased, to say the least. one of the most important things they tell you when researching history is to consider where your information is coming from and how that persons perspective influences their discussion of it.
which is why i also dont consider nimueh to be a villain. shes an activist! yeah she tried to kill arthur that one (?) time but he didnt even die so. doesnt count <3 but we SEE her having a conversation ALONE with uther where she says she didnt know what would happen to ygraine and i just cant imagine why she would lie. if she really wanted to hurt him she could have said she'd known and killed her on purpose but i dont think thats the case at all. she says she never would have helped him if she'd known what would happen. like, surprise, if you hunt and kill people for the crime of existing they will fight back and its not going to be the way you like it and innocent people will die. because thats war. you ruthlessly slaughter her people and she will slaughter yours.
worlds most unstructered post. professors hate her. anyway the show eventually starts to take on a very firm, "merlin has magic but ues not LIKE those other magic users therefore hes ok :) everyone else is evil tho. except the druids (sometimes :|)", whereby merlin using magic is only allowed if hes helping or saving arthur (except all those other times but we dont talk about those i guess) and his stance on magic eventually warps until hes just kind of horrible about it.
100% unpopular opinion but gaius should have died in s2 or 3. he influenced merlin far too much and basically never for the better. sorry to gaius lovers but i do NOT like that old man. he advises merlin EVERY time to not tell morgana about her magic (which she has no control over and therefore is manifesting in ways that will absolutely get her caught), to never help any of the unfairly persecuted people of the episode or even to use magic at all. hes a bootlicking coward who only helped people he cared for or when it suited him. how many people do you think he watched burn simply because he didnt agree with the way they used magic, whether it actually "evil" or not.
merlin's only friends who know about his magic are an old conservative man and a guy who dies right when merlin could have used the support of someone to help him "come out" to arthur about his magic.
im firmly of the opinion that had he told morgana about his magic everything would have been literally fine. because alone and with loterally no support system at all, is it any wonder that morgana would go down the road she did? after years of fear and watching people just like her be burned for the crime of existing, with no prophecy or friends to tell her that it wont always be this way. you dont have to be afraid because youre not the only one and i wont let anything happen to you. oh wait. she did get told that. by MORGAUSE. not about the prophecy but how can they be judged by trying to bring about change by themselves. by trying to kill a king whos killed so many of their own people.
if the intention of the show had been to give a poignant message about the cycle of abuse (morgana succumbing to bitterness and hatred just like uther) or how fear can control you (merlin eventually becoming essentially the bad guy, judging everybody who doesnt use magic the way he sees fit, staying silent and contributing to persecution of magic people because living in fear can make you paranoid and bitter (sound familiar?)) then i would applaud because wow did that make me fucking cry! and hit actually very close to home! and it was tragic and horrible but also inevitable
but as far as i can tell that was not at all the point, because in the end kilgharrah tells merlin the prophecy has been fulfilled, albion is united and magic returned! hurrah! but. um. did i miss something? when did that happen? oh, you mean when gwen is queen....? so.... gwen unites the land of albion and returns magic to the land? except, merlin seems to have lived on until the 21st century of our world and magic is not what i would call flourishing atm.
so i guess my question is... well actually i dont have a question. actually wait i do. what the fuck?

merlin and arthurs dynamic is so special bc they show each other their raw ass emotions like they just fucking feel things around each other doesnt matter what doesnt matter why they just fucking feel shit that they usually aren allowed to merlin bc he has to hide everything ever all the time always and arthur bc first its his dad and te toxic masculinity then that spreads to when he actually is king like even when hes with gwen his literal wife he focuses more on why he feels like that and what to do to solve this problem instead of just feeling the emotion without any cause bc that isnt what matters he needs to be allowed go feel things they both need to be allowed to step back and fucking feel shit
i think merlin started off doing that more and arthur did it less then they went swapsies so whereas in the beginning it was arthur that was always so fucked up bc he pushed himself to meet his fathers expectations and took on so much alone that lessened as he started to trust merlin and let himself feel things around merlin but merlin in the beginning was able to do that not just with arthur it was a lot more raw with him but it was like when morgana said hes a lover thats just how he was he was able to feel his emotions and let them happen so that he could move on from them but as he started going fucking crazy he started to do that less as arthur started to do that more

FanFic inspi for @akkideo (whom I saw the post asking for inspi) or virtually anyone who needs some. If you write this make sure to tell me, I WANT TO READ IT SO BAD!!!!
Ok, so. Don't mind my horrible picture because I actually like this drawing and it makes it look a lot less pretty... JUST READ THIS
Arthur is a huge prat in the beginning, basically a misinformed ass on everything lgbtq+ because of his father (who is the CEO of a huge enterprise "Camelot inc" and real asshole). He genuinely doesnt know more than "those weird people that arent like me" One day, he comes into that Cafe and makes a joke on Merlins nail polish or anything. Merlin tells him he is a huge misinformed prat.
Arthur takes it personal and decides to prove him wrong (because of course the prat is already fascinated with merlin and can't stop thinking about him and how pretty he is). One day he comes in the Cafe dressed like that and merlin is like what the fuck is that huge prat doing??? He did it to see merlins face and to prove him that he isnt "a misinformed prat". But he is still a prat and Merlin reacts a way he did not expect and is even more mad but it's all a misunderstanding because (after lots of slowburn like 20-40k 😍) Arthur truly gets to understand the lgbtq community thanks to merlin, Gwen, Morgana and eventually gwaine and eventually finds out he is gay. And merlin admits he actually really liked Arthur's outfit and he puts it back on :D and they are dorks in luv.
Gwen and Morgana are super protective with merlin especially in the beginning, they are also a couple, gwaine is merlins roommate, leon is arthurs collegue and a good friend, the other knights are whomever you would like and gaius owns the coffee shop.
Honestly, whatever you make out of this I'm taking it. Do what you what you want of my shit post. Kisses.

I think Ead and Sabran were stolen characters from merlin, a mini thread:
Tumblr media
Okay so that on the left is Gwen, and Morgana is on the right.
And they have the exact same Descriptions as the characters in priory.
The only difference is Gwen also has Merlins magic, BUT Morgana is also like Aurthor. So its like 4 people into 2.
And yall are probably like "Why does this mater?"
(It doesnt) BUT the uncanny thing is on her final ADOFN Q@A of 2022 She responded to my question:
Tumblr media
BUT she has talked about Merlin before (Old account) and has mentioned watching the show before.
Also, all my friends submitted questions, (Some did multiple) Yet she only answered mine, on a show she never watched?
and who would answer a question from a show she never watched
when there were people who have questions directly for ADOFN.
But am I mad? Nah.
Priory is GODLY
But priory could technically be a merlin fanfic lmao.
She did it better 500% tho.

i really like arthur's bit of growth this episode (even if it doesnt last)
after their first night in ealdor, morgana jokes that arthur still hadnt learned to dress himself and arthur tells her "you dont have a dog and fetch the stick yourself"
but right before the fight, arthur tells merlin not to help with hid armour, and to focus on his own instead. he then even helps merlin buckle it up
i know its an obvious mirror and all but i just really like that

Part of why legendary Merlin was so successful in making Arthur a king for everybody was because
(1) he was running on a schedule
(2) dude can see complete visions on his own and could interpret them on his own
(3) he was his own boss
(4) he was well-traveled and knew a lot people
(5) well-learned in many things not just magic
(6) already served under a previous king
(7) more life experience tbh
These are core aspects are things that BBC Merlin didn’t have. BBC Merlin not being able to see complete prophecy or visions on his own and him rejecting that power given to him by the crystals made him a slave to the prophecies of others. Because of his fear, He cut himself the ability exploring other paths and futures. He trusted in other oracles and his mentors too much when he could have been his own oracle. That’s why they were able to manipulate him to the point of no return.
BBC Merlin not being well traveled as the legendaryMerlin made him a sheltered guy too. BBCMerlin’s world revolved only around Camelot nobility (especially the prince) and not much else. BBCMerlin doesnt have the first hand experience of living with the druids or the magic townsfolk outside the immediate castle. BBC Merlin didn’t gain enough wisdom to understand what his people on the ground were really like. Gaius conditioned him to just mistrust everybody and only extend help to uther/arthur. Dude’s like a frog in a well. Because of this, BBC Merlin became ignorant and unsympathetic to the plight of people not from his own magic sect. That is not good for someone like him who was supposed to help rule them all.
Another important thing which BBC Merlin unsuccessful was that he didnt have a set timeline to achieve his goals. He was content with that “someday” (which nbd, not even Merlin himself knew when)
Early Arthurian Cycle Merlin knew what exactly were supposed to happen within weeks/months/years because of his prophetic powers. The dude could plan more accurately and more systematically the steps he was going to take in order to help Arthur and the other Kings/Knights. Thus legendary!Arthur, by a lot of Merlin’s machinations, already became a full fledged king of everybody within his first two years.
Since BBC Merlin didn’t develop this ability, he proved to incapable of handling the futures properly and merely reacted rashly to many of the visions. I believe this is also why he was unable to truly offer Arthur the best advice. BBC Merlin relied too much on heart/gut and the words of his mentors and not necessarily reliable third party information anymore. Hence both Merlin and Arthur truly failed in diplomacy a lot of times, especially against smart and politically savvy entities like Uther/Morgana/Morgause/Agravaine.
As a result of this, Merlin’s life became a lot more tragic and unfulfilling since he just kept blindly physically fighting against the limited glimpses of the future that he saw.
Therefore BBC Merlin not venturing on his own outside camelot and him not maximizing on his power to be able to see past, present, future proved to be his greatest bane.

I actually lost sleep over merlin last night and i still have a lot of thoughts
i never actually watched the show after the first time through when i was 14. And the impressions i was left with this entire time was: merlin is gay; arthur and gwen are SO cute but i still think merthur is even stronger; morgana's downfall makes me depressed because once they were all friends and then she betrays them all; poor merlin trying his hardest to make the parts of destiny he likes happen and the parts he doesnt like NOT happen, he is literally a tragic hero and for all his efforts, for all his sacrifice and the time he spent closeted, arthur still dies and the ending made me sob for a week
But now that i'm rewatching i feel like i remembered it completely wrong and i feel like a lot of people do too. Yes the ending is tragic and it hits as hard as it did because we've always knownit was going to end like this, they've been telling us since season 1!!
But its also tragic because..merlin is such a damn bootlicker. Its tragic to see him stop fighting for his rights and even stop WANTING to stand up for himself. All he cares about is arthur arthur arthur, and i dont just mean this like he's obsessed in a bad way because he loves kissing the monarchy's ass. ITS BECAUSE MERLIN IS 100% ACTUALLY GENUINELY IN LOVE WITH ARTHUR! And arthur loves him a lot too, just not romantically. ANDTHESE TWO ASPECTS ONLY MAKE MERLIN'S SITUATION ALL THE MORE TRAGIC AND PATHETIC.
For some reason I remembered this show as being so sad because For The Power Of Good, merlin had to sacrifice living openly. When really this show is so sad because Merlin willingly submits and renounces his rights, his fire, his rightful desire for respect for himself and his kind all because he is in love with a man who, if he knew the real him, would have him exiled or even executed
And you know what? There's elements of that same Tragedy Of Bootlicking in gwen and gaius as well. Both have been wrongfully accused and nearly executed by uther (gwen's father was ACTUALLY executed by him) and yet they continue to not only not seek revenge (which fair enought, thats your choice) but they continue to serve under him DIRECTLY at his fucking palace. ?!?!? Logic?!?! Logic where did you go?!?
Gaius has been criticized in the show by other sorcerers for betraying their kind for standing by as they were slaughtered and now working directly for uther. Why?!? Why did gaius do this?!? Honestly, i have to believe it was just fear and cowardice and convenience. His other choice was exile or maybe death and he chose submission. MUCH LIKE MERLIN!!
What about gwen? Why does she stay in camelot after her father is murdered? How can she possibly bear it? Because she is in love with a man who she believes will bring about a new era of prosperity and peace and rights (for servants and the lower class in general). MUCH LIKE MERLIN!! (Except he also wants rights for those with magic)
Morgana is the only bitch i respect around here. She is the only one who says "you know what? Fuck this and fuck you, i will not submit just because i have blind faith in the hope that one day things might be a bit different". Oooo and she is the villain of this tale, i see... just because she refuses to bootlick...

i REALLYYYYYYYYYY wanna write smth akin to First Kill but with morgwen, with gwen and arthur and the knights being hunters, and morgana, merlin and other magical beings being hunted.
gwen and elyan kinda feel like outcasts because elyan has magic but in secret, and so gwen is always protecting him.
arthur and morgana do not know they are related (yet) and uther is kinda the leader of the hunters group and it is Tense. morgause knows the truth but she doesnt wanna tell morgana yet (morgause is not as evil in this au because life has been kinder to her, however, she is the one with the most questionable morals; she is the oldest tho, and is oddly protective, and that overrides anything else)
gwen gets chosen to be like the one who tries n infiltrates the magic group as a mole, but she actually does end up liking them all and tries to get help for her brother. so she becomes a double traitor. she does not like this AT ALL
anyways we get fight scenes between gwen and morgana, slowburn romance between them, a brief period where morgana gets reallyyyy morally questionable and tries to kill gwens friends after she finds out the truth abt her heritage (arthur, on the other hand, starts to question everything, and he acts as normally as he can around uther while also being more observant of gwen, who hes noticed is just getting more and more agitated as this goes on: arthur is the first one to know the truth abt gwen's double traitor situation and abt elyan)
also arthur and gwen are kinda in a maybe-maybe-not type of situation where its obvious they both like one another but gwens holding back because of the guilt of hiding elyan n shit
also subplot merthur. merlin is kind of a trickster character and gets on arthurs nerves ALL THE TIME even tho it just looks like theyre flirting. its very funny for everyone else

Regressor Arthur and Caregiver Merlin Headcanons!
arthur has been regressing for a long time before merlin even comes to camelot
he doesn't have a specific age that he regresses to, just an ambiguous "little"
merlin doesn't think he's cut out to take care of arthur like that- he isnt a huge fan of kids, and arthur already gets on his nerves when he's big, let alone when he feels like a child
meanwhile arthur loves being taken care of by merlin, and he loves doing things like picking flowers for him or giving him drawings as his way of saying thank you
merlin makes toys for arthur, including a soft doll that arthur drags around with him all the time. he loves that little doll so much and he will pitch a holy FIT if someone tries to take her (even if its only to clean her)
eventually gwen and morgana find out, but arthur refuses to tell the knights (he doesnt want his men to baby him. the very THOUGHT of gwaine pinching his cheeks or patting his head makes him want to scream). gwen and morgana find him adorable and they help wherever they can, but arthur doesn't respond well to them
he only wants merlin
shush gwen this means nothing
merlin gets gwen to help him make a baby blankie for arthur, and he usually uses that to swaddle his doll and make her comfy. he does sometimes drape it over his shoulders when he takes a nap, because it smells like merlin and he likes having that scent close
please play jacks or checkers with this boy he is desperate to play
merlin does find that he has to use magic even more often when arthur is regressed because he gets into everything. he isnt as concerned with being secretive with it though because arthur isn't paying attention
arthur tends to regress for bedtime a lot, and he likes to fall asleep with merlin beside him. he is stubborn about making sure he can see or hug merlin when hes falling asleep, and if he doesnt? tears
he isnt good at being subtle. he doesnt tend to think about it when he's regressed, so he just skips around and sucks his thumb around anyone if he's feeling little
but merlin is constantly trying to keep him in check. he swats his thumb out of his mouth, grabs his hand and makes him slow down, reminds him to act big, etc
arthur chews through his shirts, and they try to give him little pouches of poppy seeds to chew on, but this ends up with him crying because of a mouthful of poppy seeds
merlin gives up one day and gives him a honey dipper to chew on, and it works way better than he thought it would
arthur's nicknames include: miting, little prince, baby prince, little knight, honey, sweetheart, dearheart, and cub
merlin doesn't have many nicknames, usually just ends up with clotpole or mer because arthur doesn't know How to think of nicknames
someone please talk to me about these two this is my hyperfixation ahahaha,,,

Whumptober day 8: Everything Hurts and Im Dying
Fandom: Merlin
Prompts;
Stomach pain
Head Trauma
Back from the dead
Havent touched Merlin for awhile, since I was mad at the ending, but lets do this. So lets go with the timeline of "Arthur knew of Merlins magic a bit sooner than his damn death." And the one where the knights kinda knew too, it took awhile, but they also knew before Arthur.
Merlin stares out the window of the coffee shop, watching the park across the street bustle with activity. Even after all this time, he still cant help but think about how different things were before. How sports have gone from duels and jousting, to games where you pass things back and forth.
He can imagine his friends, staring with him, he think a few would probably like or even prefer these games, but also the faces of scrutiny from others. How there would be bets and goading until they all ended up at the park to try it out...
He wonders how their lives would have differed, if they'd been raised in this time instead. Would Morgana have found a way to thrive? Would Uther have been so... him? Would everyone have found a way to be happier and safe and alive?? Would he have had to watch a whole world change and disappear? Watch his friends leave him?
He shakes the thoughts from his head, it was no use dwelling now. He just needed to come to terms with the fact that... he would be alone forever, in a world that no longer seemed to need a King. Which was fine! Why would he want to watch the ones he loves die again?? Hes been alone this long, he could deal with it.
He sighs to himself, before taking his leave, it was best to head home when his brain got like this. To read and let his magic surround him in the safety of his property, until his mind quieted enough for him to continue on. Merlin stuffs his hands into the pockets of his light jacket and keeps his head down as he makes his way through the crowds. He makes a turn where the crowds thin, and finds his head being aquanted with a plank of wood.
He supposes thats another way to clear his mind.
...
Merlin supposes that he probably jinxed himself.
The world was always listening, and he figures it probably finds him ungrateful or something, which he probably is. So now it was going to give him something to complain about, like a mother tweaking the ear of a spoiled acting child. He didnt think he was necessarily spoiled, but he could see how this could maybe get him out of the rutt he was stuck in.
After all it'd been awhile since he was kidnapped.
Given, this one would be a little harder than the others to escape. What with the glyphs carved into the manicle around his ankle, and the blaring headache that was making any sort of concentration difficult. And, Whoever captured him this time, knew what they were doing, he felt like Kilgharrah in the cave beneath the castle.
"Are you awake demon?"
Ah, so one of those cooks.
"Holding your tongue will not gain you anything. Grant me what I want and maybe there will be mercy in your future."
Why is this his life? This guy was a headache on top of a headache. He doesnt deign the guy with a response, hes perfectly fine trying to get his head to stop spinning, and then find a way out of her.
"Fine, we shall see who can outlast who."
He's left alone, in a mostly dark, dank basement of sorts. In a cage and magic bound, with a head doing its best impression or a basket ball dribble, and an eery silence he wishes would leave him alone.
...
For someone who cant die, Merlin can get hungry. Of course, he doesn't have to eat all the time, but it helps with energy and keeps him from being utterly miserable, and helps with healing and stuff. He doesnt like the feeling of being hungry of course, the pain that comes from a stomach trying to eat itself is less than pleasant.
But it does let him know that he's been here long enough to be this hungry. A week, maybe a week and a half, two at most.
Its annoying really, more than anything, unable to use his magic more than a few sparks, unable to move more than the chain and cage allow, and the hunger pains that wrack through his stomach often enough leave him curled up. He'd much rather be moping at home, or finding something to fill his time, or even plotting his next life. Not sitting here, a prisoner to a meer imbecile.
He comes down every so often, Merlin estimates it could be every other day, but his head has yet to clear enough to really measure any time beyond how painful anything is. Which is why the sound of footsteps on the stairs doesnt startle him, even if he's sure he just saw the man. He stays curled in his corner of the cage, arm wrapped around his stomach as another wave of pain wracks his weakened frame.
The footsteps stop at the front of his cage, slide abit to indicate a crouch, this is new but Merlin does not move, he will not give the man that satisfaction.
"I know its been awhile, but a smile would be nice."
His head snaps up faster than it should, a sharp pain and wave of dissiness hitting him, hes glad for an empty stomach then, lest he lose what he had.
"Easy there."
As his vision clears, he sees the owner of the voice, he wonders if its his mind playing tricks, but hes just different enough to make him think otherwise. Hair a little longer, face younger, but his eyes exactly the way he remembered,
"Lancelot?"
"There you are buddy. Looking a little rough there Merlin, think you can hang on a little longer?" Lancelot holds out a sandwich of all things, and as Merlin tentatively reaches forward and is able to take the food, hes finally convinced, he takes his friends hand and is sure he'd cry if he was able.
"You're really here?" He asks to be sure, and Lancelot gives a sad smile.
"I am, and Im pretty sure the others are too. Kinda funky being brought back as myself and not a puppet, but its good to see you Merlin."
"But, Albion doesnt really exist anymore, theres no kingdom for you all to save." Merlin doesnt understand, Albions need was supposed to bring Arthur back, and yet Albion is no more, how is Lancelot here?
"You're still here arent you? You really think we'd stay away from you?" His grin is as handsome and cocky as it always was, "Im afraid I have to go Merlin, but we'll get you out, just hang on a little longer."
"Tables have turned huh?" Merlin tries for a grin, but doubt sinks in, "this isn't a trick right? Its... a little hard to believe."
Lancelot squeezes his hand,
"Have faith my friend, we're with you always."
And its only the fact he walks out, with another reassuring smile, and he can hear the door open and close, that keeps that hope alive. That the sandwich doesnt turn to dust in his hands or mouth is another relief, even if it sits rather heavy in his stomach as its energy is eaten through quickly. Nausea waves through him, and he forces the food to stay down, before hes left feeling empty once more, if not less shaky.
He doesnt fully understand how he could have been what brought them back from the dead, but if it was true... well maybe the world was finally answering his grief.
...
Coming back to life was weird.
Reincarnation was different than necromancy, and this felt different than reincarnation, if that made any since. Sure they all looked the same, if missing some scars and stress marks, but they hadn't remembered who they were until a week ago. At precisely the same time, that they could tell anyway, they collapsed and were practically dead. Coming back with memories of old, and of the lives they had in this century, but also with a new feeling in their guts.
Now Lancelot knew the feeling of Merlins magic much more than the others did- or rather could recognize it since their varied knowledge of said magic- and this feeling reminded him of it. And it was this feeling that had them all ending up in the same place, the place where Merlin was being held.
Lancelot had been the first to arrive, he had been close, mearly a bus ride away. But Percival hadnt been far behind him, that was his first clue that the others had to have come back as well. He couldnt bare to have Merlin so close and not give him some hope, so with Percy on watch, Lancelot had visited the warlock. The sight had nearly killed him again, and he vowed to run the man through for hurting his friend.
But this was a new world, and so he and Percy decided it best to wait for the others, at least for a short while, to devise a plan that wouldnt have them tried as murderers. And until then, joining the cult was easy, holding back on knocking heads harder but managable, for Merlin they'd behave, unless of course they caused further harm, but they would not fail him.
Not again.
...
Arthur was pissed to say the least. Coming back only to find Merlin in trouble and a world that was so different from the one he'd given his life for, was unsettling to say the least. But mostly, the fact someone was picking on his idiot, he would not let that stand.
It helps that his sister in this life is a lawyer and has rubbed off on him enough to know exactly what to do. And with his men with him, well, no one would stand between them and their much needed reunion.
...
He wakes, after an unwitting sleep- thinking it was nothing but a dream. His stomach still wishes him dead, and his head- though a bit clearer- still smarts with a wicked headache.
He releases another few whisps from his hand, simply to remind himself of what his magic is, even at the cost of a burning ankle. He will have this shackle destroyed somehow, whenever he does make it out of here- and he will, this man will make a mistake soon enough.
Said man makes another visit, though this time he seems fit to follow through on previous threats. A taser of all things is unexpected, and painful, but also not as bad as quite a few things from past lives. Still, he convulses, crumples into a heap on his side, but glares at his captor.
"The only thing you'll receive from me, is a curse. Clotpole." He manages, past a dry thoat and aching lungs.
"So he speaks. Perhaps a while longer and you'll be more... aggreable."
The man walks away once more and Merlin lays his head on the cool floor of his cage. He'd been through worse, but at least then he'd had a purpose, something to look forward to. He was so tired.
...
Elyon didnt know what this guy wanted, but if he really thought this would get him anywhere, he was dumber than he thought. The only thing he was doing was unknowingly giving them more reason to leave him for dead.
And boy did they feel no remorse in it.
This guy had a long list of crimes, sins, and dirty deeds. And this cult and its members were much of the same. They'd be doing the world a service to say the least, and Elyon knew they all looked forward to walking away with Merlin in hand.
They didnt come back for nothing after all.
The plan had come quickly, Arthur was ruthlessly efficient as he laid it out for them, and it wouldnt be hard to accomplish. The cult had gatherings- summoning attempts and the like- nearly weekly, and it was the perfect time to act.
While Arthur, Lancelot, and Gwaine would get Merlin, the rest of them would ensure this summoning ended in fire. An easy accident to have, or an offering/summoning gone wrong, all likely and believable conclusions. They'd make sure of it.
...
Gwaine percures the keys, a slip of hands for both the cage lock and ankle shakel was easy enough, the leader really was an idiot. Slipping off as the others gather is easy enough too, and while they want a piece of destroying this man, Merlin came first.
As they make their way down the stairs, Gwaine is not fully prepared for the sight. Lancelot had of course warned them, that Merlin was in bad shape, that he'd been through a lot, though none of them quite knew what. They were mostly relieved he seemed to remember them, and their life before, and even seemed to have magic... and the more Gwaine thought on it the more things didnt add up, or well, painted an ugly picture. But that wasnt important right now, they could make up for lost time later, for now they needed to get him out of here.
Three weeks down here was too long for their friend, and they swore it would never happen again.
Merlin stays curled on his side, hair falling over his closed eyes, though its obvious hes not asleep, tense as he is. Lancelot crouches low as Gwaine starts on the three locks on the cage.
"Merlin, we're here. Im sorry it took so long, but we're getting you out of here."
The man doesnt answer, though a tremble starts in his limbs that worries them all. Arthur steps forward then, keeping an ear on the door,
"Come now Merlin, I surely dont pay you to lay around all day."
That has him moving a bit, head turning just slightly for an eye to peak through the hair, squinting at the three of them with scrutiny. Gwaine get the door open and enters slowly, hands out in hopes he doesnt spook his friend.
"Gonna get that nasty shakle off yeah?" He asks, trying for soothing.
"Wasnt a dream?" He asks, voice a little slurred and hoarse from either disuse or dryness or both.
"We're here Merlin. And we're getting you out."
...
They watch the estate burn for bit, far enough from the city to bask for a moment, before they take Merlin far away. Hes skinny and tired, eyes telling them they missed a lot, but hes alive.
And maybe, maybe he didnt come back from the dead like they did. But as they assure him of their pressence, a little bit of life blooms in those georgous eyes of his. And things start to feel whole.

The time between us
Random fic idea about merlin, arthur and morgana somehow coming face to face with their younger and older selves and having to talk to them? (If anyone has any recs pls share)
Like the idea of young merlin being so excited about life and though hes slowly realising how different he is and that some of the villagers in ealdor arent as kind to him as others, he still loves life and is full of joy and LOVES his magic (maybe this all happens just after arthur finds out about merlins magic and it helps him process it easier by also talking to young merlin)
but it slightly breaks older merlins heart at how innocent he was, how happy and loving and pure and simple life was and how much he loved his magic, wheres now, though he still loves it, its a weight on his shoulders. He just wants to hug younger him for hours.
Arthur sees the opposite in his younger self. He sees how isolated he was. How touch starved and unsure in himself and how truly unloved he was. He sees it, for the first time he truly sees, especially compared to young merlin, that young arthur lived to impress others and thats it. He didnt have any love or any joy or any childlike excitement, he was trying to age as quickly as possible to impress those around him and thats it. Both arthurs watch both Merlins interact, unlike them who are hugging, theres a solid space between the two princes, the elder is left wondering how much better life would have been if he grew up with merlin.
Morgana doesnt know what to do when she looks at her younger self. She sees a smart and fun girl, one that loves adventures but also the beauty of life. Not a girl being tormented by even her own thoughts. Much like merlin and Arthur, she feels a little heartbroken at what she sees.
After a day of shenanigans with their younger selves, theyre faced with an older version of themselves.
Merlin finds his older self at the crack of dawn, and when Arthur asks the older sorcerer, who hasnt changed all that much, he says the older prat will be along shortly.
When arthur finds himself that afternoon he sees a strong and admirable king, but what shocks him is how relaxed he seems. A gentle giant almost, face adorned with smile lines and hair still a soft gold. Hes clearly older but he doesnt look like time hasnt been kind. They talk for hours, the older often laughing at arthurs worries because in the end he still overthinks everything, much like he had thought about his younger the day before. The older gives the prince advice, but often it ends with keep those around him close, especially them who he loves, as love is what helps him be the king he becomes. (Arthur doesnt miss the kings soft gaze that lands on merlin.)
Morgana much like arthur only finds herself after lunch, but she doesnt expect what she faces. She sees a soft woman, one who still adorns royal gowns and looks though wiser, just as she does now. She demands to know if she manages to take what she deserves, to rule Camelot as she sees fit. To use her magic to her fullest strength. Her elder watches her with soft eyes before hugging her, a real hug, one she doesnt often get from people aside gwen.
Her older self eventually pulls away and moves back before shifting to a more disheveled version of herself. One thats hair is matted and dress ripped. One that scares morgana because she doesnt truly recognise herself. She closes her eyes for a second and when she looks back she sees the calmer version from before.
Her older explains that thats the path morgana falls down if she continues the way she is. She explains how the reason she wasnt there this morning is because when morgana goes against camelot and arthur, she doesnt survive. She explains emrys, camlann and her entire downfall and morganas left confused because how can someone come back from all of that.
Her older just smiles at the question and says she was given a second chance, a chance to change and go back to the point current morgana is at, a chance to make the right change for people like her rather than bringing the world down with her. (Much like arthur, morgana doesnt miss the look her older gives merlin, though unlike arthurs, her olders gaze is more admirable) She tells morgana that she was simply more patient the second time around, she waited and after uthers death, who brings on his own downfall, the world simply rights itself.
Morganas flustered, because theres no way arthur pendragon, son of uther, would ever look magic in the eyes and welcome it into the kingdom. Theres no way that magic can live free and that her powers wont be restricted. Her older laughs and tells her all about how her and Arthur rule camelot fair and together, and with the help of some others, eventually magic is eventually accepted in the world. But to get that, she mustn’t fall down the path shes on. She mustn’t burn the world with her but simply wait and work with it. Morganas left in tears by the end of it all.
Merlin on the other hand feels nauseous. He guesses early on in the day that older morgana and arthur dont show up at the same time as his older self because the original version of themselves didn’t have a future.
His older explains how he suffered, how he lived through the battle of camlann and had to see the kings last breath. How he waited for centuries and how under arthurs rein magic was never fully accepted.
He explains how that stupid dragon doesnt know everything.
He explains how eventually he figured out how to go back, to fix everything, and when he got it right god was it right. How morgana didnt turn evil, how uthers rein was still cut short and arthur, with merlin at his side, eventually legalises magic. How on their original paths, the paths of their destiny, the weight of the world is what took them to their demise. How some simple changes, changes everything really. He explains it all and by the end merlin feels dizzy.
But with the way older merlin smiles at older arthur, and the gentle, adoring, smile he gets back, merlin realises god its really going to be worth it.
Only those three got this experience those days, well, those three and gwaine who spent the entire time with his younger self playing games and his older self drinking. A simple couple of days really. He doesnt understand when merlin tells him few years later that it changed their lives, because really? Alls older gwaine had said was to place high bets on arthur making the first move!
(Idk it just started off by me wanting angst between young merlin and arthur and older them but then I spiralled)

the biggest reason i havent posted anything here is that whenever i think abt the merlin characters n what not is an modern au, where they work in a place kinda like supergirl? like an undercover organization that deals with supernatural/magic cases n what not. it has several branches, and the one that uther supervises and that arthur, gwen, morgana, the knights, gaius and others work at is more a hands on deck, action packed situation where they deal with cases that need physical force or neutralization n shit like that. they used to be able to just murder any magic being without question (kinda like how cops handle black ppl in america, yknow, no questions just shoot), but now theyre advised against it, much to uther’s chagrin. even tho he is the boss and this branch is the original, this is a democracy so. he also has to abide certain rules.
this change kinda happened because of merlin, because him n uther have met even before merlin n arthur did. but more on that later.
in present times, where the universe is at, merlin is very antisocial n kinda serious. he’s 26 or up, so think season 5. he’s very strange and off-putting (hehe reference), and arthur actively hates him, while the others dont rly feel that strongly abt merlin but still keep their distance. other ppl also dont like merlin because he is barely there but still gets jobs and gets paid. everyone else needs to hand in reports and attend meetings, go to classes if necessary, go rest while others can go n work. merlin doesnt do any of that, may or may not do a job uther assigns him, and if he does do a job he doesnt stay a minute longer. arthur seems merlin as this guy who thinks he’s better than everyone just because he’s a warlock and very powerful, blah blah blah. in fact, when he refers to merlin as he coworker, merlin denies it and says he doesnt work with arthur, or anyone in uther’s branch. it angers him to no end.
merlin’s files of his work and past in the branch are also very sealed tight, no matter how good elyan is at hacking. he tells them it must be magic as well, tho he knows tech magic isn’t merlin’s thing so someone else must be protecting him. it only makes merlin look more suspicious.
everything comes to light one day when gwen overhears merlin n uther screaming at each other in uther’s office and quickly gets arthur. the first thing they hear when the squad enters the scene is merlin screaming at uther’s face “if you even so much as speak to them, speak about them, or even think about them, i will skin you alive myself, no magic involved very disturbing, very uuuhhhh where’s the context yknow, so while arthur joins in on the screaming because thats his father getting yelled at while the others watch with different levels of amusement (max amusement being morgana, least amusement being gwen) a lot of things become clear
1) merlin doesnt, in fact, work there. uther tells arthur himself that merlin is under no contract, no obligation to show up at any jobs. merlin sometimes does because of certain debts and other personal matter concerning the old branch where he used to work at, that is more about helping and nurturing troubled magic users, a lot of them coming from uther’s cases (it’s all very organized n shit). uther shows that he respects merlin a lot actually, which leaves arthur very confused, until...
2) merlin is the reason why magic beings aren’t killed anymore in uther’s branch because he was able to summon Ygraine’s spirit, with the help of his old boss. after getting absolutely wrecked emotionally n also getting a lecture from ygraine for how uther is treating magic beings, uther gets to work on making it all better, because that is his wife and also she may haunt him if he doesnt do as she please. summoning a spirit did take a lot of energy from merlin, seeing as he did this several times for uther to re manage the branch like his wife may want to. uther feels indebted to him in this way. merlin offers to summon arthurs mother as well if he wishes to, despite the costs. now it leaves the rest of the context to get to...
3) merlin has adopted 3 girls with unusual magical abilities, that he befriended when they were 8/9 and he was 16. because of certain conditions, he had to let them in the care of uther’s organization, before they were separated. he put them exclusively under his uncle’s care, gaius, while he had a lot of things to work through himself and was a danger to them, this at the age of 18. around 20/21, merlin is much better (also uther’s organization starts to separate) and can afford his own apartment for him and the girls to all live in, and from then on (because this kinda job pays very well) cared for them and paid their livings expenses as if they were his own daughters, even tho the age diff is more like siblings. uther is interested in having them working for him cuz theyre all very smart, talented, and powerful, all personally trained by merlin himself. merlin does not want that. none of the girls want it either, they’d probably want to kill uther, because...
4) at the start, when merlin first came under uther’s “care”, he got experimented on, for around 3 months. after knowing this, Alice, the future boss of merlin, the boss of the first branch that separated form uther to help magic beings instead of killing them, took merlin under her care. from then on out, she became his therapist, from 18 to 26 and onwards. they’re great friends and he keeps trying to get her n gaius together but they refuse (merlin doesnt know that they have in fact met before n have had a relationship but it fell off cuz gaius was uther’s friend and alice could never like that). so now that they know what the context what about, the unbridled hatred merlin has for uther, uther’s weird but respectful views of merlin and merlin’s position in the branch, now they all have one last question. what the fuck does merlin do then, if his job is not on the branch? well...
5) he’s a teacher. do you know mildred hubble? yh he teaches that class. yeah. he’s suffering. he also teaches some other girls but thats more of part time classes for them because they have other shit to do, like school. this is baffling to everybody because what the fuck. your main job is an elementary magic teacher, n your side hustle is... an undercover organization not influenced by the government?? what???
so yh this universe is just pure crack, very self-indulgent n shit, as per usual

ok so . ok. ok . SO
this was a very good episode but i am likeeeeeeee.
(put a cut cause it ended up being a Rant lol)
what is the Point of the Destinies and Prophecies in the show even? i have been spoiled for the ending years ago so, seeing the dragon and gaius and even merlin seriously considering letting mordred die and arthur of all people finding a way to help him was such a powerful story! like the scene of him breaking him out and delivering him to the druids! i kinda got chills!
but bc I Know How It Ends i feel very. Hm:/ cause see, mordreds whole schtick post 'mordred is evil now' like post 1400s (in arthurian myth) was that he was arthurs fateful punishment. arthur is told one of his bastard sons will kill him and he decided to kill every infant befora that can happen. mordred barely escapes and resolves to kill arthur because of his violence (and yknow there tons of stories like that in ancient myths, some variations have arthur just abandoning him, but thats the gist)
but here....... arthur does everything right? he goes above and beyond, setting out to save mordred himself. merlin, who hears the prophecy, does the opposite of what "og" myth king arthur does and resolves to have compassion and mercy instead of giving in to violence and fear. so it seemed that the show was breaking apart from the 'you cant escape your fate' line of myth, but as it turns out they wont, and i guess its snagging on my brain because:
1- it doesnt work so well here because arthur didnt hear the prophecy. it kind of defeats the purpose of a self fulfilling prophecy if he never knows about the prophecy in the first place
2- there isnt that much of a grayness here. mordred is not arthurs son, is a magical kid from a peaceful people and would suffer a terrible fate against arthurs wishes anyway. they did the right thing in a pretty black and white situation
3- because the show, lbr, doesnt have medieval or ancient sensibilites, and they have this magical oppression core that mordred was involved in, and arthur is supposed according to this show help end this opression, the idea that destiny will punish him for helping a magical kid at great risk to himself, for morgana no less feels really.............. pointlessly mean? emphasis on the pointless.
like truly. what is the fateful punishment here. arthur will die by mordreds hands after helping him despite the fact hes the magichate town prince, because merlin didnt listen to the prophecy but LIKE. WHAT IS THE TAKEAWAY HERE??
kill innocent children over fate? (which is, again THE OPPOSITE of what mordreds most famous myth was getting at) idk, always listen to prejudice?? bc not helping mordred would be allowing uther to kill one more innocent magical being, and Fate wanted the king who was promised to end magical oppression to do that because.............................................................. ?? ?? ?????
Now. granted, i might know merlin's ending but i dont know the middle, so theres probably something there that arthur will do and will tie into his fate, but. because this is so specifically framed as 'if you let the boy live, you'll never fullfil your destiny' here, it doesnt matter yknow? its still narrative punishment for them making all the right choices. i dont get it
