Dear Lord, Let Me Never Be Digestable.
Eyeless Jack and Mitch Harlan (og eyeless Jack protagonist) one-shot blurb thing.
Cryptic!eyeless Jack (it/its user.)
“Mitch was EJ’s victim & killed his brother”shhh they are besties now and Jack lives rent free w him 🫵🫵
Only content warning is cannibalism n stuff
“Jack, is this really necessary?” The sleepy blonde yawned. The night tyrant could only nod eagerly in response to him and plopped down a medium-sized cardboard box in front of Mitch.
Mitch had to put up with the creature's bullshit for several years now and wasn’t too sure how he did it either. It was like taking care of a dog. And Mitch never liked having pets because he could hardly take care of himself, let alone something completely out of this world! It didn’t help that Jack had the audacity to bring back strays. STRAYS!! As if Mitch didn’t consider it a stray itself!! Though he still somewhat cared for EJ.
Through the course of the three years, he had to unfortunately know of the unearthly being; he lost his brother (to Jack) and that house as well. It doesn’t help that before he moved in with Edwin his house was foreclosed. And of course, he refuses to live with his parents; he ends up in some shitty run-down apartment with some screamo-obsessed ripoff emo Rake. He had to be lying if he said it was totally bad being with Jack though, it could be silly and enjoyable at times actually! Sometimes he felt like the two together were in an Eddie and Venom situation. . minus the M!preg stuff and yeah! (I’m so sorry for the reference 😭)
Speaking of the man-eating boogeyman—Mitch never knew what he’d wake up to or what surprise awaited him when he entered his apartment. Once Jack started making itself way too comfortable in Mitch’s personal space, the man in question barely got a lick of sleep. Tonight was no exception either. It was the night of Christmas Eve before Christmas Day and Mitch was celebrating by sleeping in. Something that was so rare since work and Jack were always up his ass. He didn’t bother with all the Christmas stuff; He’d rather get stoned and pass out watching some shitty 80s movie. Not this year though, Jack had other plans.
Jack had been gathering some Christmas decor from some of its victims' houses for the past two weeks! Which explained the box thing. Inside, the decorations varied from Christmas lights, Christmas tree ornaments, a mini Christmas tree you’d find at the dollar store, and some other jolly knick-knacks. It came down to presenting the box to Mitch at 11:39 pm because it just loves fucking up his favorite person’s sleep schedule.
It did take a while to drag Mitch Harlan out of bed, and while he wasn’t too happy about being awake for something so silly, Jack wasn’t taking no for an answer. How Jolly could a monster possibly be? Mitch mentally complained.
The answer was somewhat jolly. Jack watched with anticipation as Mitch pulled out each separate trinket from the box and laid them on the kitchen counter. The male gave Jack a questionable look but sighed. Which was Mitch’s way of saying fine
Jack couldn’t help but grab all the stuff it wanted to set up and get it set up — frankly, it left Mitch with the hardest decor to put up. Jack grabbed the mini tree and the ornaments for it and scurried off to find a placement holder for it. Jack ended up choosing to prop it on a shelf in the living room.
Jack was too ecstatic setting up the small white tree. It was funny. Who knew such a large being could care about something so small? Which would’ve weirded out of any normal person. The tree looked even more ridiculously small when Jack (who was hardly standing) had an abnormal structure and height. It was a funny sight to foresee.
The maneater was taking extra precautions and care to make sure all the fake white bristle branches were perfectly angled before sliding on the ornaments. It varied in colors mostly consisting of red and green! Mitch on the other hand was struggling to hang up the Christmas lights throughout the apartment, he was an averagely heightened man but he still needed a stool or chair to reach the ceiling. This was obviously Jack’s job but it was rather occupied with the childish-looking decor. Jack couldn’t even stand straight in the apartment that’s how fucking lengthy it is. But of course, it only cared for what it was interested in.
“A little help over here?” Mitch strained. He turned his head a bit to try and see if Jack was even bothering to pay attention to him, and he caught wind of Jack shaking its head. Mitch let out an annoyed huff.
“I’ll let you pick the movie for tonight if you help!” Mitch offered, and seconds later the lanky monster came right over and took over the lighting. The pale man was pleased he was able to persuade Jack into doing something he wanted for once and went back to the kitchen to see what else Jack gathered for tonight. It was just some little decorative toys like a snow globe, Christmas-colored deer, a door reef, and some other things that seemed too boring for Mitch to bother with - what he found interesting though was the elf on the shelf that looked like the elegy of emptiness? Strange.. But the Blonde shrugged it off. He ended up placing the elf on the shelf next to the Christmas tree that was also sitting on the shelf. It surprised Mitch how it didn’t tip and fall over, the tree to be exact.
Not even 30 minutes later Jack and Mitch were done. Mitch was hardly feeling any more awake than he was just 40 minutes ago and exhaustedly flopped down on the brown cushioned couch. He squinted a bit when Jack turned on the bright LEDs. White, red, and green lights lit up the dark apartment.
Jack happily came trotting over with its Invader Zim blanket Mitch once had very begrudgingly bought for it. And snacks of course- two containers containing pre-cut mangoes and pickled eyeballs. It happily set those on the brown coffee table.
“Delicious,” the man sarcastically grumbled. A year and a half ago Mitch tried figuring out what Jack would eat that was besides human organs n shit since back then they sickened him more then now. Jack refused to try and digest anything besides Mangoes. Unfortunately for Mitch, Mangoes aren’t cheap and constantly leave his pockets hurting. In the end Jack still doesn’t let its love for human organs go.
Mitch zoned back into his and Jack’s world when the couch sunk in and the said creature already had the remote in hand, curled up in the surprisingly large cartoonish blanket. Fortunately for Mitch, Jack ended up picking Krampus which wasn’t too bad of a movie. Of course the blue masked-faced whatever tyrant paired up the horror film with some classic Christmas music that was only slightly audible; You just gotta love the overstimulation!
Jack happily scarfed down all its mangoes and pickled eyeballs in the first 30 minutes of Krampus. If any other normal civilian witnessed Jack devouring whatever it is it consumed, they puked and fainted all over!
Funny enough, Jack once urged him to even try cannibalism! and with some encouragement, Mitch eventually caved he was rather curious himself and
ended up eating cooked organs. You would’ve expected a bad reaction from him but honestly? He didn’t think human meat tasted too bad. He enjoyed it a bit more than he should have - and that didn’t end up being the last time he ate other humans too. Maybe Jack has managed to fuck up his influence quite a bit.
Eventually, Mitch did end up passing the fuck out sometime during the first hour of the film, waking up wasn’t the funnest experience. His back was stiff and his neck ached due to the uncomfortable position he slept in, not to mention Jack’s heavy ass was lying on top of him. Mitch couldn’t help but groan miserably.
Hey- When did the elegy-looking elf move to the coffee table???
This is so awfully written im so sorry </33

(via Sue's News: A Round-Up of Screw Yous)
Fuck you to Target for caving to threats from anti-LGBTQ activists and removing certain Pride Month merchandise.
Fuck you to South Carolina Republicans for jamming through a new six-week abortion ban after the State Supreme Court struck down a different one in January. The only thing that’s changed is the composition of the court.
Fuck you to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for creating a cop-recruitment program that’s paid bonuses of nearly $7,000 to officers with histories of using excessive force and some who’ve been charged with domestic battery and murder.
Fuck you again to DeSantis for aligning himself with the transphobic and creepy pro-natalist Elon Musk to make his presidential announcement on Twitter Spaces. (The only saving grace is that it was a raging disaster.)
Fuck you to the Russian court that extended American journalist Evan Gershkovich’s pretrial detention by another three months.
Fuck you to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) for saying that the 20 articles of impeachment he’s facing are the result of “corrupted politicians in the Texas House.” Bruh, if your own party is saying you need to go, you need to go. (The investigation began after Paxton requested $3.3 million in state funds to settle a lawsuit brought by former employees who accused him of retaliation.)
Fuck you to Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) for complaining this week that the price of birth control is what led to her third of four children, despite her actively working against making contraception more affordable and accessible to low-income and uninsured people.
Fuck you to Nebraska State Sen. Julie Slama (R) for leaving the hospital where she was being treated for a rare but serious form of morning sickness in order to vote for a combination gender-affirming care and abortion ban, and then lamenting that a reporter violated her privacy by taking a photo of her.
Fuck you to Florida woman Daily Salinas for complaining to a Miami school about Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb” and other books, which resulted in the school banning them for students under grade 6.
Fuck you to Texas billionaire Harlan Crow for having his lawyers send a letter to Congress claiming they can’t investigate his “friendship” with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
And, finally, fuck you to Republican Presidential candidate Nikki Haley for continuing to repeat her lie that a national abortion ban wouldn’t happen because it couldn’t get 60 votes in the Senate—as if Sen. Mitch McConnell (fuck him too) would let the pesky filibuster get in the way of conservatives’ wish list. Actually, double fuck you to Haley for continuing to make the same gross transphobic joke about Dylan Mulvaney.

Rewatching X Files and thinking abt my reignited psychosexual obsession with Walter Skinner, realized Mitch Pileggi and Harlan Coben (who also inspires a weird amt of very targeted lust) look very similar and to be perfectly tbh, what if I'm not a lesbian after all. What if I just haven't met the right unusually tall, brown-eyed bald man with glasses. Maybe I just need to meet the right cue ball with astigmatism and an interest in sports.

4 Supreme Court Justices must recuse themselves......
It’s no exaggeration to say an upcoming Supreme Court case has the potential to cause economic harm to the country on a scale that we have not seen before.
And four of the nine justices have overwhelmingly vested interests in this case. Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Roberts, and Thomas are so severely compromised that they must recuse themselves.
On December 5, the Supreme Court will hear Moore v. United States, a case with implications for tax law so drastic they could block Congress from ever fairly taxing corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Trillions of dollars of revenue, from over a dozen existing tax laws, are at stake.
Individual billionaires and large corporations could see billions in tax cuts if these laws are invalidated, and any hope for a future wealth tax (such as the OLIGARCH Act) or ensuring a healthy future for Medicare and Social Security will be out of the question.
As one tax expert put it, “The federal income tax could become largely voluntary for multinational corporations and sophisticated investors, and mandatory only for everyday Americans.”
No Supreme Court case in recent history has had the extreme potential economic impact that Moore v. United States does, limiting opportunities for social change for generations to come. And four justices overseeing this case have serious conflicts of interest. Sign the petition today to put the court on notice: the integrity of the court demands they must recuse themselves now.
ADD YOUR NAME
What exactly are these conflicts of interest? Let’s go justice by justice.
Justice Samuel Alito owns stock in 17 corporations that could reduce their tax bill by $30 billion depending on his decision in Moore v. U.S. Alito also received over $100,000 in undisclosed luxury travel from billionaire Paul Singer while Singer had a case before the court, in which he was ultimately awarded $2.4 billion. Singer now stands to gain substantially from the current case as well.
Alito also currently receives PR services from lawyer David Rivkin, Jr, who represents the Moores in Moore v. U.S. This conflict of interest is blatant.
Justice Clarence Thomas has received at least 38 destination vacations, 26 private jet flights, six helicopter flights, yacht voyages (including to the Bahamas), a dozen VIP tickets to sporting events, home renovations and properties, and even private school tuition for a family member, from a small group of billionaires including Harlan Crow, David Sokol, and Wayne Huizenga, all of whom have major financial stakes in Moore.
Thomas’ wife Ginni has also received large cash gifts from the same billionaires, channeled clandestinely through several non-profits.
Justice Neil Gorsuch has ties to billionaire GOP donor Philip Anschutz, who stands to gain from the Moore case. Anschutz has been behind Gorsuch every step of the way, making huge donations to the Federalist Society before they elevated Gorsuch’s name on their short list of Supreme Court nominees for Donald Trump.
Anschutz is believed to be the anonymous donor who gave $7 million to the campaign to block Merrick Garland and $10 million to the campaign to instate Gorsuch to the court. Anschutz made his first-ever $500,000 donation to Mitch McConnell’s super PAC just one day before McConnell blocked Garland for what soon thereafter became Gorsuch’s seat.
And Chief Justice John Roberts holds stock in two corporations that could receive over $2 billion in tax savings based on the Moore case, creating a clear financial incentive for him.
These conflicts of interests are substantial and substantiated. The justices and their billionaire buddies stand to gain lots of money based on how the Moore case is decided. Sign the petition now and demand their recusal.
Thank you for insisting the Supreme Court meet basic ethical standards and that justices recuse themselves when they stand to benefit directly.

What Friends Are For | Garry Wills
nybooks.com
Men can be measured by their real or imaginary peeves. The longer one carries them around, they more they shrink one down to the size of the continuing peevishness. Clarence Thomas has long had a deep resentment, on and off the judicial bench, against affirmative action. He was humiliated by what he considered Yale Law School’s program for favoring Black applicants, because of which he decided that his diploma “bore the taint of racial preference.” For years he wanted to get his revenge on Yale, until finally he thought of a way. In his autobiography (a common vehicle for vengeance), he said he took a fifteen-cent sticker from a store item, stuck it on the frame of his degree, and hung it in the basement. At last, after longing to all these years, he had pissed on Yale.
For someone who does not feel gratitude for favors done, Thomas, like Donald Trump, expects loyalty from those he did something for. He wrote that he got Anita Hill her job in the Reagan administration. And what was her response? In effect: “Didn’t need it, dude.” As her high school’s valedictorian, a graduate with honors from college and Yale Law, the first tenured Black faculty member at the University of Oklahoma Law School before the Thomas hearings, and a revered teacher at Brandeis to this day, she would clearly not have chafed if any school was lucky enough to do her favors.
Thomas also thought that civil rights groups were ingrates after he protected them from the insult of a favor from Yale. Their attitude was, “Thanks, but no thanks.” They could conquer prejudice well enough without his condescension.
Some favors, on the other hand, will indeed define Thomas’s legacy. He did Mitch McConnell a favor by showing how to turn the confirmation process into a greasy slide. He did Joe Biden a favor, when the latter was chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, by pretending that Biden had not put him on the Court by suppressing key witnesses for Anita Hill. (Biden repaid him dismissively by trying to make up for this as if it were wrong—as it was.) He did Brett Kavanaugh a favor by supplying a precedent for suppressing or distorting testimony at Supreme Court nomination hearings.
He did Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society a favor by helping them reduce the American Bar Association to a bystander of their feigned search for legal scholarship. He did the National Rifle Association a favor by making the Second Amendment a door-opener for gunmen at school after school. He did Amy Coney Barrett a favor by making her look like a more respectable Catholic zealot than his wife, Ginni Thomas. She returned it by defending him against his critics, saying that no Justice is really a partisan hack. And he did Ginni Thomas a favor by claiming she was not a scavenger for Harlan Crow’s money, just an extraordinarily adhesive family friend of Crow.
In Crow—the billionaire real-estate developer and major Republican donor to the Federalist Society, with whom Thomas became close soon after his confirmation to the highest court in the land—he found someone who does not underestimate his talents but makes a valuation of them to match his own. What is that value? Directly and indirectly, as ProPublica’s new investigation has shown, in goods and services, year after year for nearly three decades, by plane and yacht, at feast and retreat, for him and his, for his allies and his causes, with cognate or cooperating other purchasers, it mounts into the millions. (So much for you, Yale, and your petty fifteen cents.) Even millions is a bargain price for a human soul. But this human soul was always purchasable at a low price.

pretend i dont know anything about mitch (because i actually dont and was too scared to ask in dms) and please share everything you have about that man ?!
Ohmahat gawd I’m gonna OOGLE u
Okayokayokayokayokagokag.
Starting off canonically (typing this after hand — there was barely any canon it was just us yapping)
Mitch doesn’t have much lore to him in all honesty
Just the dude that got terrorized by eyeless Jack (nawt Jack Nyras whatever the fuck La mishi mishi named their twink ass version of EJ)
But like. . . Maybe it’s just me being an EJ irl or just how much Mitchell fascinates me for no reason at all, hands down one of my favorite “background” CRP characters to a popular/mainstream one.
To sum up the eyeless Jack story told in Mitch’s point of view
—> (quote)
"I was staring face to face with a creature with a black hoodie and a dark blue mask with no nose or mouth staring down at me. The thing that scared me the most was that it had no eyes. Just empty, black sockets. The creature also had some black substance dripping from its sockets."
Actual thing —>
In the original story, a man named Mitch moves in with his brother Edwin after his house is foreclosed. A week later, Mitch wakes up with a large gash on his cheek. After going to the hospital, the doctor reveals that Mitch's left kidney had been surgically removed overnight. Around midnight that night, Mitch wakes to see Eyeless Jack over his bed, wearing a blue mask with black liquid dripping from empty eye sockets behind the mask.
Mitch manages to grab his camera and take a picture before Jack attacks, clawing at his chest. Mitch escapes and flees into the woods, where he trips and is knocked unconscious. When Mitch awakens in the hospital, it is revealed to him that Edwin had been killed the previous night. His parents drive him to the house to collect his belongings. When he enters, Mitch sees Edwin's corpse and a small object lying next to it. He observes it find that it is his kidney with a bite taken out of it, covered in a black substance.
(Copy and pasted for accuracy)
——————
There is very little media of Mitch becuz the OG (the rake-like eyeless Jack / aka the “OG”) isn’t as popular as all the remakes (the most popular being the cult-sacrificed — Slavic son of Chernobog: and WW2 eyeless Jack)
But the ones that do (or even just barely hint at his existence) I EAT THE EFF UP
(Links) —>
youtube
youtube
(This one is so silly cuz the art tbh)
youtube
youtube
(The little dude doll is supposedly Mitch. . . Also I heavily think this has Hannibal references ?!!??!!??? Maybe I’m a little too autistic)
This I ESPECIALLY love omfg
youtube
And there are probably more out there but these r just some examples
—————
I guess I really like the fact that unlike other victims of different EJ stories (or just any slasher / CRP story) Mitch isn’t a complete dumbass and he fights and flights against EJ. Whether EJ psychologically tortured Mitch (as some alternate versions go) or not idrc I still find him so silly. . . AND HE DOESNT DIE ?? WOO HOO YOU GO BITCH QUEEN !!!!!
The media of Mitch that is out there indicates the man has either blonde or black hair , blue eyes , and pale skin.
My guy is most definitely in his 20’s (assuming he is mid - late 20’s) and while not having a canonical full name (that I know of) I’ve seen multiple sources saying it’s Mitch(ell) Harlan’s / start w a H?? Idk. EJ’s story is left to be a mysterious one that is easily bended to fit anybody’s creative imaginary. That goes the same way for Mitch as well.
I ALSO SEE ALOT OF PEOPLE SAY THAT MITCH IS EYELESS JACK WHICH I FIND VERY VERY COOL
if EJ doesn’t kill its victims, or they manage to escape, they fall under a certain illness that basically mutilates their appearances. ( not canon at all plz I just wanted to mention this )
(And yes I will be using it/its for ej cuz not only do I use it/its but EJ is canonically referred to as a masculine thing, “it” and creature 😒)
There is this sooper dooped cool artist on toyhouse, and while their eyeless Jack isn’t the victim (aka Mitch) and just happened 2 have the same night I still I love their interpretation of EJ.
Uhhh that’s basically it for “canon” wise and additional information. Dudes basically as much as a mystery as eyeless Jack itself andddd yeah I still love him and I think we can do just as much to his character just liek what was done w EJ
(I probably sound insane to anything reading this:) what is bro yapping about? Mitch was just a victim—— SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH let me live in my own littol world of mitches 😞
(Also had 2 hold back on yapping about my memories w Mitch bc I’d actually drive the tumbers on here insane)

Once a decrepit eyesore, today the refurbished bridge is a jewel of modern Chattanooga and a symbol of progress for a city that has undergone an urban renaissance. As part of a years-long effort to transform Chattanooga into an outdoor destination, the bridge is now a popular backdrop for marriage proposals, festivals and summer fireworks. Pictures of its bright blue beams appear on the city’s tourism websites and brochures. There’s a rock-climbing wall on one of the bridge’s pillars.
“It’s our Eiffel Tower,” said Mitch Patel, a businessman who owns a hotel at the southern entrance of the bridge.
But for many of Chattanooga’s Black residents, the city’s beloved pedestrian bridge isn’t an architectural beacon of the New South, but a painful reminder of the old: Before the Walnut Street Bridge became a tourist draw, it was a lynching ground. In 1893 and again in 1906, enraged White mobs hanged Black men from the bridge.
“A lot of those people don’t know what happened on that bridge. In the White community, it wasn’t spoke out in the open so much” said Eric Atkins, a local activist who has worked to raise awareness of the killings and memorialize the victims. “In the Black community, you never forget one of these atrocities. You never forget a lynching.”
Even as the bridge became a central gathering place of the city, some Black Chattanoogans who know its history have refused to cross it.
Donivan Brown, a speaker, organizer and equity trainer, stands near the entrance to the Walnut Street Bridge, where Ed Johnson, a Black man wrongfully accused of raping a White woman, was lynched in 1906. (William DeShazer for The Washington Post)
“I really don’t feel comfortable walking the bridge,” said Donivan Brown, the chairman of a group spearheading the memorial effort. “I felt as if by walking across the bridge that it was some sort of affirmation of silence or the fact that it’s a playground now.”
Now, more than a century later, Chattanooga is taking a major step to acknowledge its dark racial history. This spring, it will unveil a monument at the southern entrance of the bridge to honor Black victims of white supremacy and recognize those who risked their lives to defend them.
At a time when Americans are reconsidering what is worthy of public memorialization — and removing statues across the country that commemorate those who fought to uphold systems of oppression against Black people — Chattanooga is aiming to identify new heroes to venerate.
The memorial, designed by artist Jerome Meadows, will mark the location where Ed Johnson, a Black man wrongfully accused of raping a White woman, was killed in 1906. Johnson had been convicted in a county court and sentenced to death. The lynching occurred after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered a stay of execution. Johnson’s tragic end led to the first and only criminal trial in the Supreme Court’s history and affirmed its power to intervene in state and local affairs. In 2000, a Hamilton County judge formally cleared Johnson of wrongdoing.
The memorial features life-size statues of Johnson and two attorneys, Styles Hutchins and Noah Parden, Black men who appealed his case to the Supreme Court after White lawyers refused. Three other Hamilton County lynching victims, Charles Brown, Alfred Blount and Charles Williams, also will be memorialized. When completed, the memorial will be a part of a new plaza that city planners hope will become a space for public gatherings.
The memorial’s completion comes after years of effort from an interracial committee of volunteers called the Ed Johnson Project. Advocates for the memorial said they see it as an opportunity for people to not only consider the past but also pause to think about race relations in the United States today.
Lynching was a common practice in the American South in the decades after the Civil War. From 1877 to 1950, more than 4,000 Black people were lynched, according to a historical count by the Equal Justice Initiative.
Those who carried out the lynchings were almost never convicted of a crime. Congress did not pass a law designating lynching as a federal hate crime until 2020.
America’s first post-WWII race riot led to Thurgood Marshall’s near-lynching
Although lynching claimed the lives of thousands of Black people, memorials remembering the victims of its terror are rare. One of the most prominent markers is in Duluth, Minn., where a mob of 10,000 people killed three Black entertainers who were accused of rape in 1920. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Ala., houses more than 800 markers to symbolize thousands of lynching victims. The markers are individualized and mobile, with the hope that local communities with histories of lynching will erect them where lynchings took place.
An article about the lynching of Ed Johnson in the April 7, 1906, edition of the Topeka Daily Herald. (Topeka Daily Herald)
The memory of Johnson’s case faded over the years, particularly among White residents, until the 1999 publication of the book “Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism,” by Mark Curriden and Leroy Phillips Jr. The book told of the night of Jan. 23, 1906, when a 21-year-old White woman named Nevada Taylor was returning home from work and a man attacked and raped her in the dark.
Based on a dubious tip, Johnson was arrested and accused of raping Taylor, a crime punishable by death.
Judge Samuel Davis McReynolds oversaw a rushed trial that legal historians say was riddled with problems. Johnson maintained his innocence, noting that at the time of the attack he was at work in a saloon. More than a dozen witnesses, White and Black, confirmed his alibi. When asked to identify her attacker, Taylor testified that she could not swear it was Johnson.
Despite the lack of evidence, Johnson was convicted and sentenced to death. He would have been left to die, had it not been for Parden and Hutchins, who took up his cause after most of his White lawyers abandoned him.
On March 17, Parden appealed Johnson’s case before the Supreme Court. Justice John Marshall Harlan agreed to delay Johnson’s execution. The decision outraged White residents back in Chattanooga.
Ed Johnson’s grave at Pleasant Garden Cemetery, a Black cemetery that is now being maintained by volunteers after it closed in 1970. (William DeShazer for The Washington Post)
The night Johnson was lynched, Sheriff Joseph F. Shipp ordered all but one guard at the county jail to take the night off. When a mob gathered outside demanding Johnson, Shipp made no effort to stop them as they rammed through the doors of the jail and hauled Johnson outside.
The mob dragged Johnson six blocks north to the Walnut Street Bridge and demanded he confess.
“I am ready to die. But I never done it,” Johnson said, before uttering his final words. “God bless you all. I am a innocent man.”
They tied a noose around his neck and hoisted him up from the bridge’s second rung. While Johnson struggled in the air, people in the crowd shot him, but the rope broke before he died. While his body lay on the ground, a man shot him five times in the head. A sheriff’s deputy cut off Johnson’s fingers with a knife as a souvenir.
Before the crowd dispersed, someone pinned a note on his chest: “To Justice Harlan: Come get your n----- now.”
No local arrests were made.
The murder sent shock waves through Washington. President Theodore Roosevelt called for retribution. The Supreme Court charged Shipp with contempt of court and hauled him and those who could be identified from the lynch mob to Washington to undergo the first and only criminal trial in the history of the court. They were found guilty, but served only a few months in prison. Upon returning to Chattanooga, they were celebrated as heroes. Parden and Hutchins, meanwhile, fled the city.
As time passed, Johnson’s story faded from memory.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
December 16, 2020
Heather Cox Richardson
The reality that Joe Biden is about to become president and Kamala Harris is about to become vice president is sinking in across Washington, and today gave us some indications of what that’s going to mean.
Stories about what exactly happened in the Trump administration are coming out, and they are not pretty. Politics trumped everything for members of the administration, even our lives.
Today Representative James Clyburn (D-SC), who chairs the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, revealed documents from senior appointees in the Trump administration overriding the work of the career officials in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those documents show that the political appointees at the Department of Health and Human Services called for dealing with the coronavirus crisis by pursuing a strategy of “herd immunity,” deliberately spreading the coronavirus to try to infect as many people as possible, with the theory that this approach would minimize the dangers of the pandemic. While doing so, they downplayed what they were doing, tried to hide the dangers of the virus, and blamed the career scientists who objected to this strategy for the rising death rates.
Although the White House has tried to distance itself from senior Health and Human Services Adviser Paul Alexander, last summer he was widely perceived to speak for his boss Michael Caputo, the Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs whom Trump had appointed, and for the White House itself. Alexander, a part-time university professor from Canada, defended Trump against scientists, accusing CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat of lying when she provided accurate public information about the worsening pandemic. When she suggested everyone should wear a mask, he claimed: “her aim is to embarrass the President.” Alexander attacked Anthony Fauci for his attempts to protect Americans. “He just won’t stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” wrote Alexander on July 3, 2020 (yes, I counted the exclamation points); “does he think he is the President???”
Alexander advocated spreading the infection to younger Americans: “So the bottom line is if it is more infectiouness [sic] now, the issue is who cares? If it is causing more cases in young, my word is who cares…as long as we make sensible decisions, and protect the elderely [sic] and nursing homes, we must go on with life….who cares if we test more and get more positive tests.”
Alexander wrote to Caputo: “There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus.  PERIOD.” On the same day, he wrote: “Infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk….so we use them to develop herd…we want them infected…”
On July 24, he wrote to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn and Caputo: “it may be that it will be best if we open up and flood the zone and let the kids and young folk get infected” as a strategy to get “natural immunity…natural exposure,” an argument that illuminates Trump’s insistence this summer that schools and colleges must open.
But the idea that young people are safe from the virus is wrong. Today, an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that while Americans older than 65 have borne the brunt of the coronavirus, young adults are suffering terribly. From March through July, there were almost 12,000 more deaths than expected among adults from 25 to 44. Young Black and Hispanic Americans make up not just a disproportionate number of that group of victims; they are a majority. Those extraordinary death rates have continued. Younger adults are indeed endangered by the coronavirus; the idea it is harmless to them “has simply not been borne out by emerging data,” doctors Jeremy Samuel Faust, Harlan M. Krumholz, and Rochelle P. Walensky—Biden’s pick to run the CDC-- wrote in the New York Times today.
Another report today showcases two former CDC political appointees who are now speaking out to call attention to the silencing of career scientists at the agency. Kyle McGowan, a former chief of staff at the CDC, and his deputy Amanda Campbell watched as political appointees in Washington ignored scientists, censored doctors’ messages to the public, and cut the agency’s budget. “It was… like a hand grasping something, and it slowly closes, closes, closes, closes until you realize that, middle of the summer, it has a complete grasp on everything at the CDC,” McGowan told New York Times reporter Noah Weiland. “Every time that the science clashed with the messaging, messaging won.”
Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize winning fact-checking website from the Poynter Institute, named the downplaying and denial of the seriousness of coronavirus its “Lie of the Year.”
Today it became clear the administration dropped the ball in other important ways. We have more information now about the extensive computer hack that appears to have been conducted by operatives from the Russian government. It’s bad. Hackers placed malware on commercial network management software upgrades to gain access to government computers, along with those of major U.S. companies, as far back as last March. They have been able to root around in our secrets for months. Hackers accessed the Treasury and Commerce Departments, the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and parts of the Pentagon, among other targets. The intrusion was discovered on December 8, when the cybersecurity company FireEye realized it had been hacked and alerted the FBI.
Today the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), issued a joint statement acknowledging “a significant and ongoing cybersecurity campaign” and indicated they are not sure yet what has been hit. “This is a developing situation, and while we continue to work to understand the full extent of this campaign, we know this compromise has affected networks within the federal government.” It is clear the U.S. has been hit hard: Trump’s National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien has cut short an overseas trip to come home and deal with the crisis.
In the New York Times, Thomas P. Bossert, Trump’s former Homeland Security Adviser said, “the magnitude of this national security breach is hard to overstate.” He insisted the U.S. must call out Russia for this attack (assuming it is confirmed that that country is, indeed, behind the attack). “Trump must make it clear to Vladimir Putin that these actions are unacceptable. The U.S. military and intelligence community must be placed on increased alert; all elements of national power must be placed on the table.”
“President Trump is on the verge of leaving behind a federal government, and perhaps a large number of major industries, compromised by the Russian government. He must use whatever leverage he can muster to protect the United States and severely punish the Russians.”
The New York Times called this breach “among the greatest intelligence failures of modern times.” Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called it “stunning.” “Today’s classified briefing on Russia’s cyberattack left me deeply alarmed, in fact downright scared. Americans deserve to know what’s going on,” he tweeted. Blumenthal also recognized the severity of the coronavirus early: he tweeted on February 25: “This morning’s classified coronavirus briefing should have been made fully open to the American people—they would be as appalled & astonished as I am by the inadequacy of preparedness & prevention.”
And yet, there are signs that the country is reorienting itself away from Trump and modern-day Republicanism.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, previously a staunch Trump supporter, has released an advertisement urging people to wear masks and admitting he was wrong not to wear one at the White House. It seems likely he is eyeing a future presidential run, and clearly is calculating that it is wise these days to distance himself from Trump’s anti-mask politics.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has refused to advance a coronavirus relief bill since the House passed one last May, seven months ago, is now trying to make a deal that includes direct payments to Americans hurt by the pandemic. He explained to Republicans today that Republican senate candidates Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who are running against Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in Georgia, are “getting hammered” because the people want the bill and the Senate is holding it up.
Finally, Bloomberg last night ran a story by journalist Craig Stirling highlighting the work of economists David Hope of the London School of Economics and Julian Limberg of King’s College London, who examined the concept of “supply side economics,” or the “trickle down theory.” This is the economic theory popularized in the 1980s saying it’s best for the economy not to support wages at the bottom of the economy—the demand side—but rather to free up capital at the top—the supply side—because wealthy entrepreneurs will create new jobs and the resulting economic growth will help everyone. This idea has been behind the Republicans’ forty-year commitment to tax cuts for the wealthy.
In their study of 18 countries over 50 years, Hope and Limberg concluded that this theory was wrong. Tax cuts do not, they prove, trickle down. They do little to promote growth or create jobs. Instead, they mostly just help the people who get the tax cuts.
