18 on the choose violence 😏
EDIT: As y'all may have guessed, my queue I was saving drafts of these in was running last night and I forgot to switch the time over so here's the real answer.
18 - It's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on: you want me to CHOOSE?!? You expect me to CHOOSE just ONE character from Sandman that the fandom sleeps on?!?!?!? Oh, jail for 1000 years - well let me spin the roulette wheel Rose and Jed.
Tumblr media
ROSE. God I'm emotional about her. She's been through so much, the loss of her baby brother with a father who it's implied was not the nicest, lost her mother and her best friend in the same year, and she nearly destroyed the world but yknow what, she literally did nothing wrong here. She called Dream an asshole and totally got away with it. She's got gay hair and gayer friends (fellow bi!Rose truthers anyone???? Hello??? Someone else please discuss, queer people do all tend to flock together) and I hope she gets everything she wants.
I really want to explore the possibilities of a growing relationship with her and her immortal family sometime. Morpheus isn't just going to forget about her and Jed and him looking out for her baby brother is the only way I can see her kind of starting to warm up to him again. Like I WANT to see that weird tense but possibly loving relationship explored. Dream clearly respected her intelligence and wanted to give her more information (even if he was also using her to find the Corinthian which. Not cool).
(Also I think she'd go NUTS for the library of Dreams. Like she's a writer and suddenly she's seeing all the books never published?? Who wouldn't want to read them all?)
I have feelings about the parallels between her and Death. Plus I have a hc as some of my friends already know, that in one of Rose's low moments Despair finds her and something about the fact that this girl is family tugs at her. She has her function and her duties but she also has a sense of loyalty. So that could cause some seriously juicy potential internal conflict for her AND Rose honestly kind of needs an outlet for her bottled up grief and the weightof responsibility she feels. For Jed, for Lyta and her son...feel free to ask or dm me if you want to know more this post is already long enough xD
(And the fact that in a series where she's ONE OF THE MAIN FUCKING CHARACTERS for multiple episodes of this series she gets so much less attention ON HER OWN SELF - I'm talking art and fic overall PERIOD, let alone stuff where she gets any interiority of her own or her character taken seriously is just. I don't even know man)
Tumblr media
jED. My precious baby boy my son. I want to give him a hug. I want to wrap him in a warm blanket and give him cocoa and as much popcorn as he wants. Dream's reaction to Jed was in fact channeling me. This kid has been through too much and he deserves to live a happier life with his sister, so thank God he's gonna get it.
(But also does anyone wanna talk to me about the fact that Jed is a possible candidate for Dream's successor when he's older and might be even more viable than MASSIVE COMIC SPOILER ALERT Daniel Hall and all the ways this could complicate things HELLO.)
Miranda Walker - either the gif search function is broken which isn't beyond the realm of possibility here, or I couldn't find one gif of her in this show. And I KNOW people have made them I just can't find one...sigh
But I really want her to get more attention because her story is so potentially fascinating even if she barely got any screen time. Like this girl is the granddaughter of Desire, that must've massively impacted her life. I want to know how she dealt with the relationship with her children's father going sour and him taking Jed away and her struggling to raise her kids.
And last but certainly not least drumroll please...UNITY. That's right we're giving the whole Walker-Kincaid family some love!!
Tumblr media
HER. The queen the legend the moment.
Her story man...it gets me emotional every time. She could've had a life in the waking world. I really want to see more about what her dream life (which we know she experienced as real, with time passing and all, because of the things she said about it) was like. Even without Desire, how did she handle basically growing up in Wonderland surrounded by dreams? (I can't take credit for the Alice in Wonderland vibes that was @violetoftheendless 's great idea.) Did she make friends and a new found family there? Did she see signs she didn't understand at the time of dreams and nightmares falling into chaos and eventually leaving the realm in a slow trickle?
But also she's just such a genuinely lovely person. She took Rose into her heart without a second thought and was prepared to take Jed - I'm sure she didn't know how much more time she had but she knew she didn't have forever, and she wanted a family again and she'd lost her own parents long ago and never gotten to say goodbye...and the kicker is, unlike in the comic where she's basically on her deathbed already, she COULD have possibly lived a little longer. But she chose to sacrifice her new life to save Rose's. If this woman doesn't deserve the Spirit of Love label like I've seen in some truly beautiful meta from @windsweptinred I don't know who does. BUT ALSO she's not a perfect inhuman angel either, she is capable of being charmed by the Corinthian, which - looking around at the fandom, one can see she's not alone so I for one can't blame her too much, but also she met the king of dreams and nightmares and within less than 5 minutes called him a himbo to his face. She's beautifully human with icon behavior and Sandra James-Young deserves all the credit in the world for this role.

The amount of fun and intrigue to be had with Desire and Unity's time in the Dreaming... I mean there's so many questions!
Did Lucienne just miss there was a Dream Vortex and an Endless running round the Dreamling? Did Unity or Desire keep them hidden? In an untouched little patch of the Dreaming while the rest crumbled? Or were they in 'The Land' with the remnant of Alianora playing happy families. A place complete outside of Dream/Lucienne's remit. Was the Dreaming so utterly destroyed because Dream was cut off? Or was a lot of that the fact there was a Vortex running rampent? Because Rose seemed to make quite a destructive impact every time she entered. Was Unity and Desire having a child the only thing that stopped reality as we know it from crumbling? Or did Unity's Vortex powers stay latent because the Dreaming was in shut down mode? Is the Vortex's destructive potential only an issue if Dream is there to 'kill' it...Because if so that's some funky ass universal law right there.
Unity was dreaming for a century. Was she aware it was a dream or not? Did time pass normally or not, did life progress just like the real world... Did they age? Did the random dream logic stuff just get dismissed as you do in a dream. And then you wake up and realise that's why there were mythical creatures frolicking round the supermarket. Or was she lucid Dreaming? Was it pretty evident Desire was some kind of supernatural entity early on and they were living in magic land? Did Unity just call Desire 'my man' because she didn't have a word for what they are... You can't blame a turn of the century girl for not knowing correct gender pronouns after all.
Netflix has added an entire new generation due to extending Dreams imprisonment to 2022. We now have Desire and Unity's 'beautiful baby girl' mother of Miranda. I mean, did they accomplish what Hector and Lyta Hall tried to do and have and raise a baby in the Dreaming? Was the baby born in both the Dreaming and reality? Because Unity seems distinctly aware of her on a personal level. Did this daughter spend her days with adopted parents and nights with Desire and Unity? What happens when thier little girl dies in the real world?
Did they get married in this dream life? Is it cosmically legally binding? Was Despair invited?.. I mean, obviously Destiny would know. Did he come? He seems pretty up on formalities. Wait... Did he marry them? Do they have some weird little group pact going on not to mention it because they know how serverly in deep sh*t they are if Death ever finds out. 😆
And how does it end? Desire has settled into this dream life, Has this lovely little, utterly intriguing human, descendants, is merrily playing happy families in big brothers realm. They're possessive of them... If not, dare we use the word attached...Even possibly, 'loves' whether they admit it or not. Then one day, completely out of no where... Unity wakes up. Dream's free. It's over. No warning, it's ripped from them. The moment Dream gets everything back, Desire looses it all. And they can do absolutely nothing about it, unless they're prepared to admit to a whole lot of wrongs and beg forgiveness. Worse, Unity is now back in the real world and her time is officially counting down toward her meeting their sister. You can just imagine how Desire in this emotional situation is going to act...There's so many ways you could read their following actions. How do they go about getting their happy ending when it so heavily relies on Dream?
This is such an unexplored part of Netflix's lore with so much potential!

Desire: Ah, yes. My family. My bloodthirsty twin Despair, my senior citizen wife Unity, my traumatized grandson Jed, my hole in the cosmos granddaughter Rose, my homemade shiny daughter Alianora, and my accountant other daughter Miranda. That's my family.
Dream: I'm your brother???
Desire: You're at best a distant relative.

Also available on AO3!
To say that there was outcry when Unity Kincaid was discovered to be pregnant would be… untrue. There was horror, definitely, and whispered fears among the female staff on the Encephalitis lethargica ward and there was a quickly created divide between them and the men who did rounds. But outcry? Not so much, it was covered up, very fast, hidden even from Unity’s aging parents who did not need to know that the hospital they had placed their trust in had failed to keep their daughter safe.
Desire watched it all go down. They had assumed the form of a female nurse and sat, in the break room, listening to some of the others sob, and didn’t quite regret their actions.
“We have to do tests on the other female patients.” One of the nurses whispered, once. Her name was Emma and she had been on the ward for as long as the sickness had been around, originally as a visitor to her brother and later as a trained nurse.
Quiet vials of blood were taken, sent to the labs, and checked.
All came back negative.
The women on the ward sighed a collective sigh of relief. Desire curled up next to Unity’s bed and watched her stomach slowly swell.
(Desire sat next to their wife and listened to her excitedly talk about names for their baby, watched as she tried and failed at knitting little boots, laughed with her and secretly went out to buy some from a woman in the waking world.)
The mistrust on the ward never settled, especially not after several of the men asked to ‘help’ when Unity went into labour.
Using to power of the nurses that wanted those men to be hurt, to regret their choices, Desire sent them miserable things. If they called in one or two favours to their twin, well that was between the two of them.
They sat at Unity’s side, held her hand, pushed her shoulders back down when she tried to move, to writhe away from the pain, and wiped the sweat away from her brow.
(Desire held their wife’s hand, stroked her hair, whispered encouragement and jokes to help her, promised that they would get through it together.
“If we’re doing this together,” Unity gasped out at one point, “you can carry the next one.”
Desire pressed a kiss to her forehead and ignored the aching want inside them. “Whatever you want, my love.”)
Imbued with the power of an Endless, the baby girl came out shockingly healthy and with an incredible set of lungs. The women gathered around Unity cried, laughed, whispered promises that she was done.
Desire ached with the need to reach out and hold their child.
(Desire leaned in to their wife, peering down at the tiny baby that blinked up at the two of them, so unaware of how angry her waking counterpart was.
“Oh, she’s beautiful,” Unity whispered, stroking over the tiny fingers that stretched, confused.
“Looks just like you.” Desire replied, reaching around to cradle them both close.
Unity laughed, “Flatterer.”
“What do you want to call her?”)
“It’s a girl,” the nurse said, wrapping her efficiently in swaddling cloth.
“She needs a name.” One of the others said.
“Oh, don’t be ridiculous, the orphanage can name her.”
(“Miranda,” Unity said, thoughtful. “I’ve always liked that name.”
Despite everything, Desire smiles, “Hello Miranda.”)
“What about Miranda?” They say, before they can stop themself. “Just a basic name.”
One of the nurses – Desire never bothered to learn her name – softens slightly, as if she can see straight through Desire. “Sure, we can suggest Miranda.”
Another squeezes their shoulder. “She’ll be in good hands at the orphanage, she’ll find a nice family.”
Desire doesn’t say that she has a nice family, just nods, rises, and walks away. They can leave this place now, they’ve done what they needed to do and set the downfall of their brother into motion.
Still, they stay three more weeks to make sure Unity recovers.

Very random question but can the endless like, have kids? Comic-wise it’s clear they can providing someone else carries the child, bur what about vice versa. I don’t think there’s anything in canon that specifically bars the possibility but also there aren’t really a whole lot of examples lol 🤨🤨🤨🤨

showing us from the start- from the very fucking beginning- that hermes KNOWS that he’s a shit father, KNOWS that he fucked up with luke, KNOWS that none of it is fair- is goddamn cruel, and the writers fucking know it.
because here’s the thing, right? hermes knows all of this shit, acknowledges that it isn’t fair, even says that the other gods know it isn’t fair- and yet they all dismiss it because that’s parenting. they know they’ve royally screwed the system, oh yes, but that’s just life, you know? what can you do? they’re all-powerful beings- but feelings and mortals are hard, bro, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t make them see things the way you see them. hermes made a mistake, a HUGE one, and when confronted, he offers nothing but excuses. because that’s what the gods are. immortal, unbreakable beings, who, in their moment of failure, ignore it.
that’s not a casual character flaw, that’s rick waving a red flag under our noses and calling it a mild foretelling.
and you know what the real kicker is?
hermes told percy and annabeth this because he thought they were going to forget. he couldn’t even own up to his own actions under anything but false pretenses.
the gods, people.

Walker Family Headcanons
Because Jed is precious and deserves to be protected at all costs, and I have thoughts about this entire family. But I haven't really focused on Jed a lot so this is (mainly) about him.
If anyone wants to add onto this with their own Jed/Walker family headcanons, feel free! (But please for the love of god let it actually be about the Walkers and maybe Dream with them, as well, I'm sorry but Hob Gadling already gets put into basically every headcanon to do with the Walkers, or they get to be sidelined for stuff about him so I'm sorry but please, can this post not be one of them?? Sorry)
His favorite superheroes are Batman and later when he watched Into the Spiderverse, Miles Morales. He watches the movie 4567 times and ends up collecting all the Spiderman figurines and comics he can.
Miles Morales' Spiderman becomes his next Halloween costume. He hasn't gotten to celebrate the holiday since he was little so Rose decides to go all out and enlist Chantal and Zelda's advice to decorate the house in style. She decides, why not, she can dress up too. So she dresses up as the Bride of Frankenstein and takes him out trick or treating. They go earlier than usual so Jed won't get scared of the dark which means they have slightly less candy than usual but it's worth it and even when the light does start getting dim outside Jed just holds Rose's hand and feels better. He's SPIDERMAN, and his big sister is here. He's out, he's safe, it's easier to remember that when there's lights on from various houses and he's not alone.
Post Doll's House, he tries to draw his own comics starring Gault Rose and himself as superheroes. It only gets a B, but Rose nearly cries when she sees it.
He got Morpheus a little mixed up when it was explained to him who this guy was, and ends up calling him Uncle Murphy. Rose would've corrected him but honestly she thinks it's too funny at first, and Morpheus honestly can't bring himself to mind too much. He would honestly do anything for this kid and he barely even tries to pretend otherwise.
Morpheus, Mr. Soft Spot For Kids, sets up an entire play area for his nephew in the Dreaming so he can be a superhero and have cool adventures anytime he wants.
Morpheus made sure that Jed was free of nightmares to try and be nice, but can't protect him from fear and trauma in the waking world. For a couple months after his rescue, Jed couldn't sleep alone because when he woke up by himself he'd be disoriented and confused, forget where and when he was, and start to panic. It takes him time to get fully used to living in their new home but until then he usually ended up not even using his own bedroom but Rose's. He feels safe when she's right there. Rosie will protect him. She's always protected him when she was there.
During his darkest moments with his abusive foster family, the things that kept him going were his wonderful dream life and imagining, praying to anyone who could hear, that one day Rose and/or his mom would come and save him.
The whole ordeal with his foster parents left Jed with a fear of the dark and severe claustrophobia. He always needs at least one dim lamp or multiple night lights on in his room, or he'll start to panic; despite all logic or knowledge that he's in a safe place with safe people, it feels like he's back, locked in the trunk of his abusers' car awaiting some horrifying punishment, or chained up in the basement starving and cold and terrified. Even years later when he's somewhat recovered he still can't quite relax enough to fall asleep without light in his room.
Another unexpected trigger is hearing keys in the door because until he sees it's just Rose or the babysitter all he can think of how whenever his foster father came home it was time to be extra scared and alert. So for those few moments it takes all his willpower not to go hide under his bed.
His foster parents probably never bothered to tell him when Miranda died, so Rose had to break the news to him. Jed honestly didn't know how to feel at first because his brain just refused to fully believe it for awhile. His time with his mother may be from earlier in his childhood so it's not quite the same grief as his sister's...but he was old enough to remember her, enough to miss her when it finally hits him she's really gone. But it takes him awhile because sometimes that's how grief works and also he didn't get to see the funeral so it's harder for him to really accept the reality of her death.
He has a lot of separation anxiety to deal with already over the whole divorce and how he got taken away by his father, and realizing his mother died while he was trapped made it worse. So anytime Rose has to be gone part of Jed starts to get more and more afraid she won't come back, that she'll just disappear one day too and he won't get to say goodbye. It's fortunate Rose's writing career starts to take off and they have the cushion of Unity's family money so she doesn't *absolutely have to* go out and make a living right away because otherwise Jed's anxiety would make it a lot harder to get or maintain employment.
It does make going to school seem like a daunting, nearly impossible prospect. He gets homeschooled for awhile to catch him up on what he missed but a couple years on Rose finally puts him in school and it's a bit. Rough at first. Jed is shy and doesn't fit in a lot at first. Luckily he gets befriended by a little girl who's equally into Spiderman which is the beginning of a new stage in life for Jed, a phase where he has friends.
Gault of course, doesn't just leave their lives. Once she's been pardoned and she's out she regularly goes to visit Jed in his dreams and eventually introduces herself to Rose. She gently helps ease Jed into being able to fight some of his trauma and fears in his dreams now that his waking life is no longer a living nightmare she needs to shield him from. But she still makes sure it never gets out of hand and that Jed can learn to feel safer and stronger by having an active part in conquering his fears and the people who hurt him, in a safe place. It's honestly just as helpful as any therapist. (Not that Rose didn't immediately use some of Unity's money for therapy for Jed).
Dream decides to let Jed have dreams of his mother to try and comfort him and then one day leads him to her book in the library so he can read aloud the parts where she talked about how much she loved and missed Jed. He definitely does not get through it with dry eyes but neither does Jed, but it's something he needed to help him feel some kind of closure, knowing Miranda didn't want to leave him behind.
The doctor who first examined him realized he was malnourished so he couldn't actually eat all he wanted yet or it would be too much and make him sick. So for the first few months after his rescue he was put on a careful diet to let him get back some of the vitamins and protein he needed and to slowly let his body adjust from periodical starvation to being normally and regularly fed. But once he was off the diet Rose couldn't help herself, she tried not to let him eat too much candy but it's so hard to say no to him knowing how much simple childhood pleasure he'd been denied for years. So once a week they go out for a treat and he gets to pick every time. Also Saturday mornings become pancake days. Jed is allowed to load them up with as many blueberries or chocolate chips as he wants.

In terms of the Netflix show, where Rose and Jed are Unity and Desire's great grandchildren due to the time difference... I always picture Tati Gabrielle as Miranda the first. She's just got that perfect blend of a younger Sandra James Young and Mason Alexander Park.
I'd love to hear who everyone else thinks of for their young Unity, Miranda etc! 😁
