This convo was inspired by the lovely @arialerendeair <3<3<3
I need to update the character height chart, cause Unity is.. very short next to Dream.
----------
Unity: "Have you considered that nice people exist?"
Dream: "pfft! sounds fake."

I don't know the details of decision making in production of The Sandman on Netflix, obviously, but it feels like some of these good changes were like...
'Hey maybe now that Constantine's ex girlfriend is a queer Black woman, she shouldn't also be a thief and an addict. Let's not fall into that stereotype.'
'And maybe the nonbinary Desire could get, like, quasi-dream-consent from Unity Kinkaid instead of just flat out raping her in her sleep...especially now that Unity is a Black woman. Actually, wouldn't Desire want Unity to...desire...them before fathering the child anyway.'
'And what if The Corinthian fucks a guy and doesn't kill him because, like, maybe let's separate his queerness from the fact that he's a nightmare & serial killer.'
Some folks might claim these kinds of changes are 'sanitizing' the story...and maybe so. But really, it feels like adjusting some of the 'edgy' 'grimdark' remnants from it's 90s origin.

Death: I used to believe I had the hardest job-
Unity: Wouldn't that be Despair??
Death:
Unity: Is not Despair being the one carrying the sadness of the whole cosmos on her shoulders?
Everyone:
Unity: Stop being so dramatic, Grim Reaper. And all of you should be nicer to Despair.
Desire: *standing up* Marry me.
Desire: MARRY ME.
Desire: PLEASE.

Was violently kidnapped by the empty spaces of Desire’s and Unity Kinkaid’s story. Desire, the most flighty and selfish of the Endless stayed with this mortal woman. In a dream yes, so time frames are dubious at best, but in some aspect yes, Desire did stay and get to know Unity. There must have been something in Unity that made Desire to...you know desire to stay and play house.
Imagine Desire sensing a vortex and popping in just for curiosity’s sake. When Dream gets free, he’s going to have to kill it, (And Dream was weakened to a degree that none of them knew of when he was summoned, Desire couldn’t have possibly predicted just how effectively and for how long a mortal magician would be able to contain an endless.) and it’s going to be hilarious. He always gets so sad and tragic about it all. They hope that it’s a nice, charming and innocent mortal, like the last one, so Dream can tie himself to proper guilt-ridden knots killing it.
Expect Unity is even better than that, and now a new plan forms in Desire’s flighty little head, a plan to pass on the power of a vortex along with some Endless blood mixed in. And they were planning on giving Unity a dream of a perfect night of seduction and passion with a handsome stranger, expect that afterwards they suddenly find themselves wanting to go back. So they do.
And the one-time-dream-of-passion turns into a continuity. The kind where Unity who dreams of living her life is now courting the handsome stranger from out of town, and Desire...doesn’t want it to end. So they keep going back. And back. And now they are getting kind of fake/kind of real married in their little bubble of Unity’s dreamworld, a world with only two real inhabitants, but that also feels real in way that other dreams don’t, because of Desire’s influence.
“Darling, I know you aren’t human.” Unity tells them, and Desire knows that they should go cold turkey right now, because this is about to get out of their control and fast, but Desire is Desire. They can’t deny themselves. They don’t know how. And now they are in a domestic relationship where Unity knows that she has married a being, an endless, and she loves the nonbinary personification of wanting even more than the perfectly sculpted lover that Desire presented themselves as to her.
And this is the part where Desire finds out after fucking around. Because they are about to put on the same clown hat they have mocked Dream about countless times before, the one where you doom yourself to heartbreak with your own dumbass decisions.
Could Desire wake Unity from her slumber? Maybe, maybe not, they are not about to try, because they are terrified that the moment Unity wakes up in the real world, what they had will dissapear like all dreams do in the real world. And even worse, Desire would have to fezz up that this whole thing started with Desire’s plan to make a biological weapon out of Unity’s descendant to fuck with their brother. A plan that has now doomed Unity’s family. No matter what, this whole thing will end with Desire losing, and the best case scenario is where Dream stays locked up and Unity lives her extended life in their perfect little bubble and then dies as all mortals do, ignorant that the love of her life has doomed her family line for the sake of petty grudges.
(And Desire. Desire will never under any tortures admit to how things spiralled out of their control, of how perfectly their own schemes blew up to shred their own heart much more than Dream was affected.)

New chapter up:
Desire's laugh was a bit shaky.
You are. But you have a choice, my love, that you would entirely have without a great negotiation and debt between myself and one of my siblings. You can go, into my sister's realm even when she's absent. Or you can come with me to my realm and live with me there, that the two of us can build our own family life there, and on Earth, as long as you will it. For your life will be in my hands as mine is in yours.
She would hold Desire then and they understood that as Desire looked up at Dream.
Our sister really was right about one thing, big brother.
Dream tilted his head.
Being more like humans isn't a weakness. It's a strength. We did things her way here and we saved a life, gave her a chance she would never have had. My children won't grow up without their mother. I should say our children won't.
They brushed Unity's hand.
Perhaps.
Desire and Unity vanished then, and Dream knew as they did that he would see more of Unity Kinkaid and grow to welcome her into the family of the Endless, and then he took off into the sky, flying with his cloak trailing behind him.
This is the single grimmest chapter of the entire story and its nadir, as far as events happening to the characters in it and the grimmest set of content warnings and the grimmer tags ALL happen here. The bit with Unity and Desire and the way that works is meant to provide a breather because to simply stack grimdark makes a thing unreadable.
And because of how intense this stuff is and where this story is with a good stopping point for a bit I intend to work on some of my other Sandman stories for a couple days and then come back to this one.

The Sandman rewatch - episode 10
So I like to do this thing where, if I didn’t consider a show a complete waste of time and if it does have an actual arc spanning the season, I watch the season twice–once as a binge watch and then once more episode by episode, because it helps me notice things I didn’t notice at first, especially in cases like this where I’m almost entirely unfamiliar with the source material.
Anyway, any and all chronological thoughts and ramblings about episode 10 of The Sandman beneath the cut, because spoilers.
Jed: “Who’s Morpheus?” Rose, internally: Dear god, I do NOT have the spoons to explain this right now.
Kudos to Rose, she’s got guts telling the Corinthian “no, I’m taking Jed and going home”.
Also, I love that she wanted to have a conversation in private, but Jed is like… right there… on the bed… four feet from her and the Corinthian.
Ouch… Dream hesitating to call the serial killers “humans” is how you know he’s truly pissed.
Also, ouch that hand wound! You can tell Dream is not used to actually being physically injured.
You know, Dream, everything would be sooo much easier if you had told Rose what EXACTLY a vortex ends up doing a lot sooner.
I love that Dream is really good at taking responsibility for logical/rational mistakes that are his fault (such as acknowledging the Corinthian as a creation Gone Horribly Right), but mostly sucks at taking responsibility for emotional mistakes (such as his teeth-pullingly torturous attempts to acknowledge that he had been unnecessarily harsh with Lucienne). It makes for interesting character drama (and at least two different directions his character could develop in).
Also that is an EPIC punishment for the serial killers attending the convention. Too bad that Fun Land died before he could receive it. It also makes for a nice parallel to John Dee’s actions earlier in the series—both Dream and John took dreams away from people, but whereas John took all their lies/daydreams from them, Dream only took a very specific one—the daydream of the killers being the misunderstood victims. Ultimately, the final result is the same though: self-destruction.
Poor Jed. First he finally escapes his abusive step parents, only to end up at a convention of murderers, then he finally reunites with his sister, only to learn that his mom is dead, and then he learns that he has a great-grandmother, only for her to die less than 24 hours later. Kid can’t catch a break.
And here is my 1 moment of broken suspension of disbelief for this show: Really? Nobody from the house is surprised that Lyta is suddenly nine months pregnant and in labor, even though they literally just met her less than a week ago and she was very visibly NOT pregnant then? Nobody is questioning this beyond “did you know she was pregnant”? Like, do none of these people have eyes in their heads?
Omg, Zelda actually spoke to Jed. <3
Unity: “The one thing I do not need more of in my life is sleep.” LOL
Lyta, could you please fucking stop questioning the decisions of the Endless with billions of years of experience regarding the fate of entire planets? Like, Dream might be a jerk, but I can guarantee you, this dude knows more about how the fabric of the universe works than you EVER will.
I swear, I liked her when she first appeared, but if Lyta got hit by a bus at the end of this episode, I’d consider that a happy end.
Jesus, Chantal’s dream is a true nightmare.
See, Dream’s coming in here and his first thought is not “I am Dream, you are the vortex who destroys my realm, prepare to die”, it’s “you’ve caused a great deal of damage, but I can repair it, and your friends are still safe for now, but they won’t be unless you die, I’m truly sorry”. Of course the final result is the same, but the focus here is clearly not a selfish one.
Awww, he’s offering Rose to stay in the Dreaming, potentially as a raven (which begs the question if he could have done the same for Hector, but then again Hector didn’t ask—he just… kind of took advantage of Dream’s absence to make his literal home there and also his physical death wasn’t Dream’s fault).
Awww, Fiddler’s Green offering his life for Rose’s.
Omg, Fiddler’s Green the place is gorgeous!
“You’re not very bright, are you?” WOW, Unity!  Emotional Damage!
That subtle look Lucienne and Dream exchange when they see the heart… they know what’s up.
“Golden-eyed man” and Dream and Lucienne are both like “aw fuck, we were right, weren’t we?”
Aww, Zelda and Chantal are buying Hal’s house. <3
Oh man, Dream is PISSED OFF at Desire.
I must say, Mason’s performance is perfection.
Oh, so we have a “big, responsible siblings” vs “young, trouble-making siblings” thing going on here? Is that why the Prodigal left? Because they are the middle child who didn’t want to deal with this BS family anymore?
He remade Gault as a dream, just like she wanted! <3 ;_; <3
Awww, Dream admitting that he was wrong and he will try to listen from now on. <3 That’s what we call character growth!
And he’s giving Lucienne her vice CEO of the Dreaming position back! <3
Lucifer: “I could think of nothing I’d enjoy less.” Mazikeen: “In which case, Lord Azazel would like a word.” Lucifer: “Except that.” ROFL, the look on her face is priceless.
