Soooo, I think I’m gonna just go through Episode 4′s Mira scenes. Most of them, anyways. Part 1 is gonna go over her conversations with Zelda, then her conversation with Regina.

Basically going over how deep Mira’s frustration runs, her “release” through Irma Vep & how all this is reflected through the use of callbacks and via the soundtrack, as well as how Regina supports and functions as a rock to these insecurities.

This scene is pretty candid! It’s a clear representation of Mira’s dissatisfaction with hollywood life and her desire to feel something deeper, which she believes is coming toward her in the form of Irma Vep - she just isn’t sure when or if it will make her satisfied. But at this point, it’s the best chance she has.

Specifically, she’s discussing whether she’s going to be caving in and playing the Silver Surfer.

The fact that she’s already in the suit as the scene begins signals that she’s made up her mind. But why put on her suit at all?

To feel secure during a conversation that has happened time and time again, but one where she continually feels ignored and condescended to by her agent?

Because just thinking about this conversation is triggering the feelings of dissatisfaction and desires to break free that she knows embodying the role of Irma Vep will help her to suppress?

Maybe Mira doesn’t even really know.

We see her still admitting her lack of awareness over what she wants and how Irma Vep will give it to her. As discussed in earlier analyses - she’s just feeling things out right now. Doing whatever resonates as right instinctively.

She even has this little moment of self-reflection in the mirror as she puts on the mask.

I’d also like to draw attention to the music here? Which I don’t normally do-

Mainly because...music is very sparse in this show. It’s only used for in-universe scenes of the film, and for particularly emotionally intense moments - usually centering around Mira as Irma Vep. This is one such moment.

The captions describe the low clicking tune as she suits up as “dissonant electronica”, which feels pretty apt. I’d argue that the use of electronica is perhaps representing the phone conversation she’s just had - since soon after, very high bells are heard chiming methodically over the beat. It sounds like, EXACTLY like that sound effect they use for a text message popping up in movies. Just those perfect little “dings”.

And if together they represent her text conversation with Zelda, perhaps representing the larger obligations she has to the outside world and her responsibilities to other people, then it’s only fitting that electronic beat and those high bells begin to fade to the background as we see Mira suiting up. The bells disappear altogether. Instead being replaced with these fast-paced acoustic guitars; the signature Irma Vep “sound” for this show, most obviously heard in the intro.

It plays as she sneaks down the stairs.

A shot that’s very similar to her first time suiting up as Irma Vep - where she was sneaking up the stairs.

The music here consisted of these long drawn-out notes played by soft strings. Something that felt a lot emptier, a lot more mysterious.

I think the score for the initial suiting up signals an “emptiness” and lack of familiarity with the character of Irma Vep, thus it shifting into something more unique and “full” represents a change in Mira’s relationship with Irma Vep. She’s now becoming more comfortable with the role, and a bit more aware of what it means to her.

Enough that she’s no longer simply sneaking through a purse for a visa, but literally breaking into someone’s room.

...At least, that’s what we’re led to believe. We don’t even know what she does in there when she does.

But the fantasy can only last so long. Eventually we cut back to Mira, the next day, discussing real life again with her agent, Zelda. Specifically the details of her trip to China in order to finalize her role in advertising the Dreamscape perfume line.

“Three days, four max.”

“Yeah, and then I’m....done.” (Short laugh.)

She looks very distraught throughout it. She’s dismissive, says she doesn’t wanna be pampered, etc. - just not at all feeling satisfied. I mean, even the way she’s sitting is weird - kneeling on her floor hunched over her table drinking coffee.

(I can’t get over how much she looks like a sad puppy dog through all of these adjhskdhskd :(.)

“Gautier will throw you a party in Paris. He’ll show you off to his investors. All you have to do is flash your smile, make them happy, and then, you’re out of there.”

“Thank god.”

This line in particular jumped out to me. And the way Mira looks so unsure after Zelda says it. Perhaps being reminded of how she paraded herself to Laurie.

“They’re looking at me.”

“I like when they look at you.”

Who she’s currently convinced was playing her for a fool their entire relationship.

“Laurie doesn’t have a submissive bone in her body.”

“And if you believed otherwise, you were so naive.”

(More sad puppy dog Mira........)

I think Mira’s still feeling really insecure about having been duped by Laurie. Feeling like she’d surrendered control, and had that vulnerability used against her (more on that here.)

And so when Zelda asks if they have a deal, that Mira will similarly surrender herself in the name of capitalism to Gautier’s project - become a “face” once again, have her autonomy taken away to fulfill her celebrity image...she just looks, so so sad throughout it. To the point that it pains her to answer what she knows she has to answer.

(And now I present to you...the ultimate sad puppy dog Mira.)

“Okay, do we have a deal?”

(Mouth twitches open and close.)

“Sure.”

This all relates to the way she behaves around Zoe later in the episode, I think - but we’ll get to that.

Afterwards, she goes downstairs for some breakfast and talks with Regina.

Regina is just - super supportive. I wondered in this post whether Regina’s supportiveness and understanding of Mira and her issues was a result of her wanting to do her job, not wanting to upset Mira, etc. - but I think as the show goes on, it’s really proving Regina does genuinely care about Mira. Like it’s just - so adorable to see.

For one, she immediately can tell when Mira’s upset.

“Ah, morning.”

“Good morning. Looks like a bad day?”

And she quickly references the fact that she’d advised Mira to stay away from this Dreamscape deal, acknowledging that stuff like that makes her miserable. Which, as we’ve seen earlier - it clearly does.

“Thanks. Uh, spoke to Zelda. She closed the Dreamscape deal.”

“I told you to avoid that shit. It makes you so miserable.”

She even knows when to call her out.

“It’s part of my job.”

“Yeah, it’s not the most ethical part.”

“Oh, spare me.”

Also, just look at the way Regina gets all weird when Mira touches her??

asdhkjdhsd I’m sorry they’re just too cute.

But either way, Regina says Mira can do “whatever she wants” because she’s a big star - but Mira pushes back by arguing the only reason she’s a “big star” is because she does this “luxury brand”-type shit.

Next part I wanna talk about Mira’s convo w/ Rene, and then her interactions with Zoe.

Ooh, good question! The only other character I can think of is Lilia, but he wasn’t as confusing as Malleus: his design threw us off, but the moment Lilia opened his mouth, we figured him out lol

We really very rarely have problems with that, because it’s more about feeling the vibe of a character than anything else.

But Malleus really did confuse us for quite some time…

We know of it, but we aren’t even remotely closely familiar with the lore and stuff, but we actually went and read a bit about Jhin and Hwei after receiving your ask and YEP WE GET IT LOL to be honest we’re flattered that you thought that we might like them… they really do have an interesting dynamic, and the fact that it’s rooted in deep feelings about art and has some much despair and inner and outer conflict honestly makes it very spicy.

And Hwei’s design 👌💖💖💖 instantly love him.

Even though Regina George isn't really fitting for Vil, I bet the in universe rps/rpf community loves casting him as her in Mean Girls AUs and frequently make comments about how Vil should've been cast as her in the musical version and/or remake.

Anon, I 100% agree that the in-universe fandom fancasts him as Regina all the time. He should start asking Mira who is the most “he should’ve played Regina in the musical omg” person in the world lol

But at the same time I feel like this is the reason why Vil doesn’t read comments under his posts sometimes…

There you go, another interesting way to make Kalim overblot! I like how it’s still related to him feeling responsibility + despair because of Jamil’s death, it seems like this is the main trigger for Kalim to get an emotional reaction of this magnitude.

Najma and Jamil are basically siblings who like to mess each other but still love each other. I mean Jamil has a better family relationship to her than his parents. That doesn't mean he doesn't like how she often annoyed him.

Azul will likely try to win Najma over for her to accept her brother's relationship to her. I mean having inlaws together is worst.

Aw this is very sweet. I’m glad Jamil has a sister like that.

God I didn’t even think about the Azul-being-into-Jamil aspect of all of it, oh god this guy is going to annoy Najma too, although for some reason I get the feeling that she’s only going to be nice to Azul to annoy Jamil.

But then again, I can’t say anything concrete about her – haven’t met the girl yet.

IDK why but I really like the idea of Ruggie unintentionally 'stealing' Azul's 'boyfriends'. Like Azul is already upset that Jamil prefers Ruggie over him and then finds Ruggie on top of Idia when he arrives at the Board Game Club room (in reality they fell over and accidentally landed in a compromising position).

Poor Azul, this is going to make him overblot again lol I like how this is turning into a weird romcom, although with how petty Azul is, it could end up turning into an entirely different kind of anime.

I question when it started or when it was all going downhill in my royal life that things just seemed...dull. I could never complain about my life, except well the worst day of my life as a child. It was a good day I was eight going to be nine soon and Snow's birthday was the next day. We were both so happy about it to celebrate with our mother and father. Had mother never gotten sick and tried to make it like she was fine we could have possibly done something to help her instead I was useless to help one of the two people I cared about most in this world. We had no choice but to watch her slowly die and even when Snow had gone out to find a cure the answer was something dark that neither of us wanted to consider.

I think during the funeral is when my world started to look not as bright anymore with my mother's death. I was so young so the sadness had a good hold on me but even so Snow tried making me feel better. After a few months dad made us Travel by horse, while Johanna our hand maiden who had taken over being the mother figure in our life was walking beside the horses. The one I was riding was a beautiful white horse but like Snow I loathed the constant traveling.

We traveled for days going from kingdom to kingdom in search of what father called our future stepmother. I was tired of the traveling to the point of just leaning against the horse and about to just collapse. Johanna was the one who made it easier to keep going knowing this was never going to be an easy thing for the two of us.

"Snow, Amira your father King Leopold is a lonely man now that your mother has passed away." Johanna said "I know Johanna but that does not mean we are not tired." Amira said

We made it to another kingdom where we were welcomed by the royals of the castle, I expected much of the same with the last two kingdoms. Snow had gotten down and she was so cheerful and social while I was merely watching without speaking. Johanna had learned between the two of us which one wanted to talk to the people and who would rather stay in the background.

"Amira, you should be more like your sister and talk to people. Someday you will run a kingdom of your own next to a King." Johanna said "Wishful thinking but I want to see what is in the world before I settle down." Amira said

No one approved of my thoughts but I was different than most princesses, I guess it came with being second in line. There was a pier close by from what I looked around but saw father and Snow were having a good time talking. So I decided to speak up.

"May I look around your kingdom?" I asked "Of course Princess, you can look as far as you want even to the village." The king of the kingdom said "I will go with you." Johanna said

I walked for a bit glad to get off the horse for traveling and we walked until we made it to the pier. I sat on the edge looking out at the sea wanting to know what was out there beyond the land. Beyond these meaningless traveling and this royal life where people did what he asked cause we were in higher society than them.

"You seem so lost in thoughts." Johanna said "I just want to see what is out there, father says when I'm older but hat if he doesn't?" Amira said "You'll have access to your father's ship." Johanna said "yes, when I am older." Amira said "You will be able to do everything you want in time, but you must keep yourself going forward for your mother's wishes." Joahanna said

My mother, it was hard to even think that she wasn't here anymore and the fact that we didn't even know why or how she died. Life was just beating through the time but it was easier with father than living without him. It was easier with doing so much more but there was ways to do it and waiting for it to be done the right way.

We stayed here for a few days but just like all the other kingdoms dad didn't find what he was looking for so we were back on the road with the horses. I blocked out most of what happened just to get through it but it was during these travels we met our stepmother Regina. She was nice in the beginning but people can change for the worst.

When we returned home I was overly happy and ran to my room to put away the gifts we got on our travel but to lay in my own bed was a blessing.

A couple years passed since then as Snow and I took up learning how to sword fight in case we ever needed it someday. Father was over protective but with Snow and I as his daughters he knew we needed to know how to fight. I heard him talking about a party when we were older. A masquerade ball in our honor which actually helped me get into a good mood with something to do as we practiced for years. Time passed with our practice and though I hadn't had much match against Snow in the beginning we became apart of those who got to be better.

All that practicing payed off but still the time came when the masquerade ball was happening. Johanna had some outfits made for us. I went to my room and checked out what I had option wise and It was hard to decide. Blue dress with a pretty blue mask to go with it or a red dress knee high with a gold mask. It made it so hard to decide whether I wanted to go proper or I wanted to be a bit rebel.

Options:

I decided to go with the red dress as it gave more mystery and I didn't want the people bowing to me. I didn't want to be proper so I had to figure this out on my own but Johanna came in seeing what I was doing and she helped me. She didn't even show any disapprovement in my choice for tonight just went along and tended to it. She also styled my hair to where people wouldn't recognize me. It was the first time my hair had been up since mother died and when I put my mask on I didn't even recognize myself.

"You look so pretty Amira." Johana said "thank you Johanna." Amira said

When I left the room I knew Johanna wouldn't be attending so when we could walk in I was glad we didn't have to be announced. I saw father talking with the people, this masquerade had a mix of royals and the people of the kingdom. I walked being at ease with no one approaching and bowing glad that I could do as I pleased. As I walked I went over to the drink table getting a cup of punch when I heard a familiar voice and looked.

"You look amazing tonight Mira." Derek said "What gave it away it was me?" Amira asked "Every princess or maiden is wearing a dress that goes down to the ground." Derek said "Right, I didn't feel like being proper tonight." Amira said "Rebellious as always, less expectations on you so you don't have to worry." Derek said

Derek is my best friend from another kingdom, he went through that boy phase of not liking girls with having to see his intended every summer. I have met her a few times and didn't mind hanging with her but I wasn't allowed to go crazy. Father has been very over protective with me and Snow. We were always social with each other during events with everything going on but we walked through the crowd when I landed on one of the peasant girls in my village named Analise.

"Analise!" I yelled

Analise was already having punch with her brown hair, black dress and mask on for the party as she noticed us. I walked over and we all started talking like it wasn't some big event as I saw my sister come in. She was a bit later than I expected as I saw her white flowing gown and her mask. I knew she always represented what we stood for but she was next to be Queen. I admired my sister so much but I wanted to be just like her.

Snow's Attire:

I talked with my friends knowing that this was good enough for me but when I was out of punch I went to get some more. I was on my own as I refilled my glass taking a sip of my glass when I heard the sound of foot steps. I knew it was possibly my imagination but I felt someone tap on my shoulder which made me look.

"Forgive me, you're quite beautiful tonight." The man said "thank you, uh.." I realized I never saw him before "Where are my manners, I'm Prince Nicholas. I was wondering if you could tell me where I might find Princess Amira." Nicholas said

My whole body about tensed hearing this prince was looking for me but he was looking for someone dressed more properly than I was. Snow was sort of easy to tell her name was Snow and she was wearing white. I knew I could lie after all I couldn't do it with my family but I could give it a try.

"Sorry No. I..I don't know where Lady Amira is." Amira said Nicholas seemed to notice my hesitation and he seemed to be about to say something when another man joined in and suddenly put his arm around me. "Luv, here you are I've been looking for you." He said I didn't know this man but he was helping "why Yes, I was getting some punch." I said going along with it.

Watching as the prince left seeming to buy the sudden intruders ways of cutting in the conversation I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding. I felt the man let me go but not leave as I was looking around. I wanted to know why a sudden stranger would just jump in and save me like that without even knowing the situation.

"thank you sir." I said I saw him take my gloved hand and kiss it "Killian Jones." He said as I looked at him through my mask and saw he was also wearing one. "Now Princess Amira, you should be a bit more careful."

My whole body went into sock as he realized who was I was, this couldn't be happening to me. I as so sure no one would figure out my disguise but all the more reason to figure out who was behind the mask. I still inquired about what he was doing here after all I was curious now.

"How did you figure out who I am?" Amira asked "What brings you to the ball? gold? Jewels?" "Quite perceptive of you to be so bold Princess." Killian said "No one helps out for any reason if not for some gain." Amira said "Why I came is my business, but you seemed very uncomfortable with the prince." Killian said "How perceptive." Amira said

I thought my next words carefully knowing this was a man I'd never met and yet here I was talking with him. I took another sip of my punch keeping in mind that I had to represent this kingdom. My father was out dancing with my sister and my step mother was just sitting at a table. My world had seemed dull for quite some time but now it seemed color was resurfacing.

"Let me guess, you want to do things before you get married." Killian said before I could answer. "Yes, I want to sail the seas see what is out there. Fall in love on my own terms with whoever I want." Amira said "Well, I've been around some time. Maybe you should meet me at the tavern. I would love to know just how Amira is." Killian said

To say I wasn't interested was a lie cause he had my attention even when I didn't think any man would ever have my attention on anything. Derek and Analise came over which got my attention for a minute. Analise smiled seeing I was talking to someone for once she knew I wasn't very social with people.

"Mira, who is this?" Derek asked "My savior for the night, seems there is a prince looking for me tonight and he was able to rescue me from an awkward encounter." Amira said "Does your savior have a name?" Analise asked "Killian Jones." Killian said

The surprised look on Analise's face told me more than I needed to know that something was up she recognized that name. She pulled me over to her where Killian couldn't hear her and she whispered one word in my ear.

"He's a pirate, the one people call Hook." Analise whispered.

Segnatevi una parola nuova, se già non la conoscete: neumorfismo, cioè la versione per gli anni Venti del millennio dello scheumorfismo. È la tendenza grafica del momento, quello che ha superato lo stile “material” tanto caro a Google e poi Microsoft, composto da blocchi di colori. Invece, Neumorfismo vuol dire tornare in maniera differente a disegnare una interfaccia utente con elementi scheumorfici.

A partire dal 2007, quando arrivò iPhone con la sua interfaccia, si fece un gran parlare dello scheumorfismo, cioè il design di un oggetto che ha degli ornamenti che devono richiamare le caratteristiche di un altro oggetto. Ad esempio se prendete le vecchie Mini giardinetta, gli inserti in legno riproducevano le caratteristiche di carri in legno, oppure le pentole in ceramica con dei rivetti per far ricordare le pentole in metallo. In generale, nel design contemporaneo, gli oggetti con attributi scheurmorfici sono quelli più economici in plastica che simulano l’aspetto di oggetti in legno o metallo, che sarebbero più costosi.

Il ruolo degli oggetti per iOS

Veniamo al digitale e ad Apple. Lo scheumorfismo (la parola viene dal greco: σκεῦος (skéuos, contenitore o attrezzo) e μορφή (morphḗ, forma) è diventato un caso di successo nel mondo digitale. Steve Jobs e il papà di iOS, cioè Scott Forstall, avevano un grande apprezzamento per questo modo un po’ pacchiano di fare ad esempio una icona per i video fatta a forma di vecchio televisore, oppure quella della rubrica fatta in finto cuoio con tanto di trapunte. Un distacco forte dallo stile più sobrio dell’interfaccia del Mac, perché sostanzialmente lo scheumorfismo doveva comunicare l’idea tattile di oggetti veri, visto che poi l’iPhone frapponeva solo una superficie di vetro tra le dita degli utenti e il contenuto digitale dello schermo.

Lo scheumorfismo, per niente amato da Jony Ive, è andato in pensione nel 2012 quando il leggendario designer industriale ha preso il controllo anche del design di iOS e Scott Forstall è stato accompagnato alla porta dell’azienda. Da allora, da iOS 7 in poi (2013), c’è stata una deriva verso un tipo di design più “material”: icone piatte, colori forti, una nuova serie di animazioni compresa quella dello slide-to-unlock. Jony Ive descrisse la trasformazione come «Una bellezza profonda e duratura nella semplicità», ma le critiche sono state comunque numerose.

Il bisogno di cambiare

Arriviamo a oggi. Anche Ive è stato accompagnato alla porta (assieme a un tir di centinaia di milioni di dollari e con la certezza che la transizione avvenisse nel modo più discreto e meno visibile possibile, tant’è che ce ne siamo accorti tutti con un paio di anni di ritardo) e adesso la macchina del design di Apple è piena di volti nuovi. In questa epoca post-Camelot, dove non c’è più Re Artù-Jobs e non ci sono più i suoi cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda di livello C (tutto cambia, dopotutto), arriva la nuova rivoluzione. Bisogna opporsi? Bisogna assecondarla?

Vediamo un attimo com’è fatta. Il neomorfismo è la tendenza grafica che parte questa volta dal Mac, che dai tempi di OS X con Aqua ha avuto una interfaccia tendenzialmente “lucida” e un po’ caramellosa, mai scheumorfica. Adesso, assieme a iOS e iPadOS, c’è odore sempre più forte di neumorfismo.

Una pratica che è nata giusto ieri

Il concetto non è nuovo. Twitter è stato il suo campione, negli scorsi anni. È un linguaggio che mira a un tipo di differenziazione degli elementi che compongono l’interfaccia che non è venuto molto bene perché concentrato più sulla forma che non sulla usabilità. Cattivo design, secondo Ive, perché per lui e per Jobs il design è come funziona, non come è fatto un oggetto fisico o digitale che sia.

C’è tuttavia tantissimo potenziale ancora da portare fuori dal neomorfismo, e una “cattiva fama” che in realtà fa gioco ad Apple perché ha meno concorrenza in questo ambito visivo e quindi può differenziarsi di più. Gli elementi che caratterizzavano lo scheumorfismo erano gli attributi che imitavano visivamente oggetti reali: trame e tessuti, come il metallo spazzolato di un registratore digitale per una app audio o il feltro di un tavolo da poker per un gioco di carte.

Invece il neomorfismo se la gioca su un piano tridimensionale e utilizza soprattutto trasparenze e illuminazioni per rendere in maniera più realistica gli oggetti digitali, più che cercare di imitarne quelli fisici del mondo reale.

Cosa vuol dire neomorfismo in pratica

La simulazione delle luci e delle trasparenze nel neomorfismo è estremamente complessa e anche pesante da un punto di vista grafico, richiede processori dotati rispetto a quelli tradizionali di un tempo solo per visualizzare le icone o gli elementi di interfaccia statici. Non si tratta di oggetti 3D che si muovono, bensì di semplici rappresentazioni di oggetti digitali che però entrano in relazione l’uno con l’altro: un bottone sopra un certo tipo di finestra di dialogo si illumina in un modo, fa ombra in un altro rispetto allo stesso bottone in un altro contesto. E questo tipo di posizionamento e rappresentazione tridimensionale impatta lo stato del bottone e il fatto di poterlo usare o le conseguenze. In pratica, fa espandere e porta all’ennesima potenza l’interfaccia fatta di più piani sovrapposti, questo si un vecchio pallino di Jony Ive.

Il design neomorfico arriva dopo una decina di anni di design flat e material, con colori compatti, pile di elementi, layers, pagine, è “digitally native”, adatto a una intera generazione di persone che non ha avuto identità o rapporti con interfacce precedenti. Quella del Flat è stata una strada di modernità. Quella del design neomorfico è una via di novità che fa muovere e rende le interfacce utenti più tridimensionali, moderne, accattivanti e capaci di gestire contesti più complessi.

Nel mondo iOS

Implementare il neomorfismo può andare in due modi: introdurre semplicemente un po’ di ombre, luminescenze, trasparenze e qualche oggetto 3D. Oppure, come sta facendo Apple, andare oltre l’aspetto semplicemente visivo ed esplorare invece i modi con cui rendere più facili e comprensibili azioni più complesse, aggiungendo non solo bellezza ma anche layer di complessità in modo semplice, restituendo la fisicità meccanica dell’interazione con il computer, da tasca o da tavolo che sia.

Il neomorfismo è relativamente nuovo e ha avuto una partenza goffa, e tutt’ora, da quello che abbiamo visto con l’interfaccia soprattutto di iOS 14 la parte migliore sono le nuove forme di interazione e anche l’entrata di pannelli, widget, cartelle dinamiche, bottoni e schermate di confronto e controllo. Invece è più debole, almeno per chi scrive, la parte delle icone, che si portano ancora dietro una identità antiquata (guardate le nuove icone di Foto o di App Store, ad esempio).

Nel mondo Mac

Nel mondo di macOS 11 Big Sur invece la transizione è più di impatto anche perché deve aiutare il nuovo sistema operativo a staccarsi da una traduzione consolidata negli ultimi anni e incamminarsi verso una convergenza di modalità di utilizzo che dia continuità a chi usa Mac e iPhone-iPad. Per questo soprattutto le app Catalyst ma anche i controlli e le modalità di interazione, l’entrata in scena dei widget e mille altre cose incluso il Dock tondeggiante con le nuove icone smussate, parlano tutti una lingua più nuova di prima e per molti aspetti neomorficamente più gradevole. Staremo a vedere, nell’uso concreto, come questo si tradurrà dal punto di vista del gradimento degli utenti. La rivoluzione, comunque, è in marcia anche nell’interfaccia utente.

So! This is the scene I’ve been having trouble with! But I think in doing this analysis I figured it out. It really made me really appreciate Mira and Laurie’s relationship even more. But it’s also VERY long lol, so this is Part 1 - more of an analysis on how Mira desires authenticity, how her relationships with people reflect that - all the while being impeded by her more toxic behavior.

It starts out simple enough, this scene occurs after Mira gets off the phone with Zelda - her agent. Zelda was trying to get her to drop out of the Les Vampires remake ASAP, believing it was almost certainly going to be shut down, but Mira wants to continue - she’s already been desperate to move away from soulless big budget schlock and she seems to be finding some sort of resonance with the character of Irma Vep. Not to mention, as pointed out later, she doesn’t want to face Laurie again.

So, when Zoe tries to argue argue the production SHOULD be shut down due to Rene’s...eccentricness, she argues back a little.

“Because Rene is nuts.”

“Based on my experience, I think...he’s nuts in a good way.”

I don’t think Laurie’s lying either. She seems to be on board with Rene’s weirdness. I think it’s a welcome reprieve from her life in Hollywood showbiz; being able to interact with someone who cares about their art, and separates himself from contemporary film-makers by being authentically “odd”. And I also think it’s a projection of how she wants to be; authentic. Perhaps that’s why she surrounds herself with “authentic” people; like Zoe, later. And Regina - who’s similarly into “artsy” film-making and isn’t afraid to speak her mind or do what she wants.

“She wants me to play the Silver Surfer.”

(Motions disapprovingly.)

Examples of that include her spontaneous midnight pool trip in Episode 1, or her expression of disappointment w/ the tabloids covering her and Mira as a couple.

But of course, with that last one - Regina eventually stopped objecting as Mira continued to insist to her that tabloid rumors like that are “part of the job”.

“I’m used to this stuff, it’s been my life for years now.”

It’s thus important to note that I believe Mira values authenticity to an extent. As seen with the people she hires, she still wants to control that which she feels she’s justified in controlling.

I think she hired Regina because she was not ONLY authentic, but also did what she wanted. Which, y’know, fair enough - she is an employee. But obviously that can be an unfair relationship in situations such as these; where someone’s mental health is on the line.

Yes, Regina may’ve stopped arguing her side - but that doesn’t mean she’s okay with things. And Mira gives no indication she feels her pain, or is going to make things right. I’m not arguing Regina is traumatized or anything, but I think the fact that their relationship functions in a way where Mira is able to discard her employee’s concerns based on her own feelings says something.

And it says something about her relationship with Laurie. Having dated Laurie, who was initially her personal assistant, gave her a similar expectation of being able to have final say, and have a greater level of control over their relationship. Which is exactly what made it so toxic.

“Doesn’t an open relationship go both ways?”

“No. It doesn’t.”

Let’s analyze that conversation for a sec, actually. The one I just quoted. I promise it relates to what I just said.

She’s defensive about Laurie calling her out on her “controlling” behavior throughout, of course.

She can get defensive in general - in both this conversation, and when Zoe asserts that Rene’s nuts. The difference is that in Zoe’s conversation, she doesn’t badger on about it. She also behaves this way when later arguing with Rene about the silliness of the Vampires’ codebook. Backs down a bit.

“So uh, are they in a safe?”

“Tch, who has a safe?”

“...Ah. Okay, I get your point.”

Part of this is the fact that in either instance, these are not her employees. But it’s also because Laurie was the only one calling out a particular sore spot - Mira’s controlling behavior. Based on an incident that was emotionally vulnerable for both of them. And the fact that Mira’s still genuinely upset from her dating Herman.

“God, you’re fucking controlling.”

(Silent mouth movements.)

“I’m just not used to getting dumped.”

But to her credit, she does eventually back down here, too; in response to Laurie really drilling in how strong their power dynamic was. Which is what leads to her deciding to take orders from Laurie from a change, to hopefully fix their relationship.

“You were fucking me too in between errands I was running for you.”

“I can see you have a better life with...Herman.”

All this to say, Mira values authenticity, but struggles to obtain that authenticity due to her desires to control. To control others, and to control herself. Laurie was another example of that.

But her connection to Irma Vep is changing that, whether she’s aware of it or not. It’s “freeing” her. But of course, in order to be free, she must give up control. Let herself do wildly instinctual actions, like stealing a random lady’s credit card - or submitting to others’ orders.

Thus why she’s aroused by being submissive, and being paraded around, and all that kinky stuff - it represents this repressed desire to give up trying to control everything. To just be herself. Even if herself is a full-on sub dhskdskjd.

It’s what she NEEDS to embrace. And it’s no coincidence that she starts embracing it once she wears the Irma Vep suit.

I think Mira’s going to obtain the authenticity she craves. For better or for worse.

otp: jiwon x debut ? is living and thriving. mitski wrote this song about her own relationship to music, and has said how she can tell when listening to other artists' songs, who “doesn’t have any other options in their life," and who “could do something else for a living.” according to her, people who don’t have other options have a desperation in their music, and i feel like you could find the same kind of desperation in jiwon's. in his bio, i've mentioned how he feels like he is a trainee first and everything else ( brother, son, friend, lover, etc ) second, and i feel like that applies to him being an artist as well. when you think about how an 11-year-old jiwon was turned down at auditions and told that he just didn't want it enough — it hits different.

when jiwon writes music, he bares his soul to the listener. his music is really personal to him, and for a long time, it was like his diary. especially when he was a younger trainee, him sharing his music with you meant that he really trusted you. this song also has this air of wisdom and nostalgia to it, and you're convinced when you listen to it that regina spektor has personally witnessed and experienced all the things she's singing about. experience is the one thing jiwon has in spades, especially as one of the oldest ( at the time of writing this ) 4am member. like when asked why he deserved to pass his atlas records audition over the other boys in his audition group, jiwon said that it was because he had "more to say" and in a way he does, not only from being in the industry for so long but also just because he's just lived that much longer. ( and then when he becomes a trainee, he acts all [ insert surprised pikachu meme ] when he realizes that other trainees don't like him as much as they used to, when they've heard him essentially say that their opinions are white noise oops. )

ack i had a hard time choosing an excerpt for this one since it’s --- more like the essence of this entire song ? jiwon has a reputation for being… a really nice guy. he's a reliable hyung/oppa to look up to, rely on, and go to for advice, and in his 14th year in the industry, his reputation definitely precedes him. he's not usually the type to lose his temper or visibly show anger unless you're someone he's close to… but he's also been in the industry long enough for things to piss him off. everything from how the industry preys about the dreams of children and then uses those dreams to degrade and manipulate them for profit, to people who think they can get away with using him for his generosity, to idols who debut who (in his eyes) don't deserve fame at all, to talented friends who had to drop out of the industry due to politics, to the people he trusted who’ve dropped him like dead weight in order to get ahead. he's one of those people where people are surprised when he gets angry, and there's something about this song where you don't really realize that the singer is upset until you pay attention to the lyrics.

yet another song about how much he wants to pursue music (and debut NGNSJAK), but this time in the actual form of a love song because subtlety 👌. i feel like when everest (the first group he was a part of) disbanded in 2013, there were a lot of people in his life who truly cared about him that breathed a sigh of relief. they thought that disbandment meant that he could move on and find another passion. but jiwon — loves music and loves to perform and for all its faults, mirae sound (the first entertainment company he was under) was where he first fell in love with it all. he has conflicted feelings about his original company because it's also where he was verbally degraded and treated awfully by certain staff members, but they gave him a stage and a mic for however short of a timespan it was and he's been trying to return to it ever since. but this time, he's not a naive 11 year old trying to make his parents happy. he's fully aware of the cold, harsh industry he's returning to.

which brings us to everest's disbandment — the lowest point of his life. matt healy (the frontman of the 1975) wrote this song about his fans and his fear that a day will come where they will tire of his music and leave him. jiwon trained with some of everest's members for almost six years, and then the group disbanded after only two. having been the leader of said group, it left jiwon in a really fragile place. picking up the pieces again and deciding to audition again — when he still had debt from his first trainee period and his self-esteem was at an all time low after leading a group to disbandment — was probably one of the hardest decisions of his life. i have a headcanon that he originally went back to seoul to apply for jobs as a music composer for other artists — and at the last minute he ended up auditioning to be a trainee again instead.

wow. the title says it all JAFKLDG. but really --- he loves his 4am members so much. so dearly. tenderly. this song just makes me think of the boys staying up in their dorm late at night, practicing, writing music, and just being there for each other. jiwon is a lot stronger now than he used to be and it's all due to his members. i've talked about this in the ooc chat, but being with 4am is the first time jiwon's felt free in such a long time. after spending a lifetime of being there for others and doing what others want/expect of him, he can trust his members to be there for him in a way that he's never felt comfortable to do with anyone else in his past.

don't fuck with him, don't fuck with him !!! it might have been 7 years since everest's disbandment but he's coming back ! and when he does, you'll all be sorry !! also, similarly to "dress up in you", another subliminally passive aggressive track GJSJAKA. his self worth and confidence — is at an all time high in the years since he joined atlas and was added to the lineup of the ceo's “favorite” trainee group. he's not arrogant, but he carries himself differently now. he has less fear and is willing to take more risks. maybe he’s a little arrogant. who knows.

listen, all of his relationships that have ended (romantic and platonic) are clearly not just his fault. but he really doesn't --- fight for his relationships as much as he fights for his music. there are more than a few important relationships that have taken a backseat to his pursuit of his dreams. like i said for the first track,, he's a trainee and an artist over anything else. music is his #1 priority. while it's led him to have an impressive work ethic and an enviable passion for his craft, his relationships with his parents, his sister, former friends, and ex-lovers have all suffered because of it. his obsession for his music at the expense of those he loves is definitely one of the, if not the, biggest of his flaws. this song also speaks to how jiwon feels being as close as he is to debut. with only months left before 4am is scheduled to debut, he's working harder than ever. but he's fully aware that he's not racing towards the finish line — he's getting in position to start the race. and this time, he's going to do everything he can to make it last.
