I’ve been reading Michael Shea’s Nifft the Lean. It’s pretty good so far! It’s a little overwritten, I suppose, but the scenes conjured by the words are original and strange and exciting. I just left off at the point where Nifft must wrestle the Taker of Souls for entry into the land of the dead.
It definitely does remind me of Jack Vance and The Dying Earth - that’s a comparison I’ve heard before, and I think it’s warranted. Although, Nifft the Lean seems bereft of the technology-as-magic aspect found in Vance’s Dying Earth stories (a little disappointing to me, that’s something I really enjoyed in Dying Earth).

ahhh i didn't rb that post but i'm more than happy to play <3 gonna piggy-back a little off what you already wrote if you don't mind!
Sybille was aware of Michael Shea. Had seen him around town a fair amount and occasionally at the VA in Missoula. But she'd never properly spoke to the man. Namely because he's deaf and her own grasp of sign language begins and ends with the hand and arm signals the military taught her. But he always seemed like an interesting fellow, in her opinion.
Attractive too. Not that she's looking....not that hard anyways...
But lo and behold, here he is sliding onto the bar stool beside her, face flushed and definitely drunk, leaning in with a forwardness that might have made her blush were she a few drinks more sober. More than anything, she's amused. And after that, she's intrigued. Guy's ballsy, she'll give him that.
"Now hold on," she says, cocking her head to the side and smiling mischievously. "Buy me a drink first."
He stares at her, heavy brow furrowing in confusion. Right. Deaf, she thinks. Maybe he don't read lips. Or maybe between her accent and her own drunkenness, he just can't.
So instead she taps the glass of her almost empty stout and motions to the other end of the bar, where Mary May is serving customers. He flags her down, motions to Sybille, and then holds up two fingers. It's the most concise non-verbal "I'll have whatever she's having," she's ever seen.
The two enjoy their drinks, and as they do, Sybille pulls a small notepad from her back pocket. Originally, she'd intended to use it to communicate with Michael, but it quickly turns into the two of them drawing crass doodles and the most riveting games of tic-tac-toe she's ever played.
And as time wears on, and as the pleasant heat in her stomach moves just a little further south, she decides to indulge his initial inquiry. Flipping to a new, clean page of her notebook, she draws the setup for a game of hangman. Two words. Six spaces total for the letters. A question mark at the end.
She sets the pen down, sliding it towards Michael. She cheekily draws her lower lip between her teeth with a smile, watching expectantly while he stares at the puzzle she's presented him.
It doesn't take long for his lips to quirk upwards. He grins at her, eyes sparkling in the dim bar-lighting with excitement. Then, twirling the pen between his fingers, he fills the letters in and slides his work over for her to see. Proudly capping the pen, he sets it down on the paper.
F U C K M E ?
"Why Michael," she says, sliding out of her seat and letting her hand linger over his strong shoulders as she drags him towards the stairs to the handful of rooms upstairs. "All y'had to do was ask."

Updated VGK Playoff primer
I left off Robin Lehner, who hasn't played in 2 years, who is, by all rights, signed through next year. He hasn't played in 2 years even though I deeeeeeply love him. I miss panda so much. I also left off all the guys who got traded over the summer or aren't playing anymore (Phil Kessel, Teddy Blueger, Nolan Patrick, Reilly Smith, Laurent Brossoit) Rip our wives, but none of them have played at all this year, so.
