Album Review: David Crosby & the Lighthouse Band - Live at the Capitol Theatre
“That’s not how you’re supposed to open up a concert,” David Crosby says after he and the Lighthouse Band came on stage with two new tracks in the form of “The Us Below” and “Things We Do for Love.
With that, Crosby, Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League play three more 21st-century numbers before backtracking to “Laughing” and an a cappella rendering of “What are Their Names” from the bandleader’s 1971 solo debut, If I Could Only Remember My Name.
Recorded in 2018 in New York, Live at the Capitol Theatre is a document of the quartet as it toured in support of Here if You Listen. Of the 16 songs, 11 are culled from albums Crosby’s released since 2014. He revisits CSN on “Guinnevere,” Crosby-Nash with “Carry Me” and CSNY on “Déjà Vu.”
This is truly a band effort with Stevens and Willis taking lead vocals on “Regina” and “Janet” - the latter a jazzy, electric-piano-based highlight from Listen - and League serving as music director in all but name.
Sound Bites, who traveled more than two hours to catch a show on this tour, counts Crosby as one of favorite male singers. And while the performances are top-notch, the songs are, for the most part, merely decent and pale in comparison to Crosby’s most-famous work.
That “1974,” based around an acoustic demo from the titular year, and the band’s new arrangement of “Woodstock” are the strongest of the new songs, illustrates this point.
The blog also preferred the band that toured behind Sky Trails in 2017, as it had a rhythm section, was mostly electric and found Crosby playing more of a cross section of his extensive songbook.
All that said, Crosby remained in fine voice at 77, which is only slightly less surprising than the fact he is still alive at 81. That’s reason to celebrate, as is the undeniable fact that Live at the Capitol Theatre is an accurate representation of what Crosby & the Lighthouse Band were up to four years ago.
Meanwhile, Sound Bites’ll be waiting for a live release from the Sky Trails band.

Random things I like to hc :
(here's part 2)
- Constantine calling Batman "love" anytime.
"Good plan, love. Now, if I may add..."
- Diana constantly fighting the urge to add multiple times in the footnotes of her research papers : "*I know that because I was there."
- Clark feeling some type of way whenever anyone from the Batfam calls him Uncle Clark (he does tear up a little the first few times).
- Anytime, Booster would get cancelled for a tweet, he'd go back in time just far enough to prevent from tweeting it. He did that way too many times.
- Barry and Hal being that one best friend duo that are big on PDA. Most of the time during JL meetings, Hal's leg would be intertwined with Barry's.
- Given that the way they usually interact correlates with what he learned about married couples, J'onn assumed for the longest time that Bruce and Clark were spouses.
- Much like how Clark switches off his kansan accent when he's being Superman, Bruce switches off his "posh" accent when he's being Batman.
- On the contrary, Oliver always sounds filthy rich.
- Everytime someone mentions (any) Robin, Hal's mind still can't fathom that Batman's sidekick is a literal child.
- Dick is a bisexual flirt in and out of costume.
- Regular occurence : Batman enters the meeting room, sees Booster's stupid expression that's a clear sign he's going to share very stupid ideas, and Batman exits the room without a word. He doesn't come back for the rest of the meeting. After it happened more than once, some of the members get the clue and walk out as well.
- Superman can recite entire movies by heart. Not surprising in and of itself, but surprising that Bruce silently lets him do it over his shoulder when he's working in the batcave. Lets Clark unwind and gives Bruce background noise.
- After multiple complaints, Batman had to soundproof Dinah and Oliver's room in the watchtower.

Song Review: David Crosby & the Lighthouse Band - “1974” (Live, Dec. 8, 2018)
Repurposing an unused demo dating to its titular year - “1974” - and fashioning a hopeful set of 2018 lyrics about living life and living on after life, David Crosby & the Lighthouse Band proved the music wholly relevant 44 years down the road.
The group, Crosby and relative youngsters Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League, first recorded the four-way co-write for Here if You Listen and it’s now the lead single from the forthcoming Live at the Capitol Theatre, to be released Nov. 25 in audio and video formats.
Played slightly faster than in the studio, “1974” remains pure on stage with the sounds of fingers on guitar strings adding extra accompaniment to Crosby’s latest harmony band, which sings in call-and-response manner:
Will our love beat on (after we are gone?)/traveling beyond (what do we become?)/is there a reason love and song go on and on?
Existential questions no one can answer. There is little doubt, however, “1974” will live on alongside Crosby’s best work.

DAVID CROSBY & THE LIGHTHOUSE BAND / Live at the Capitol Theater
