While writers such as Shakespeare cast him as a purveyor of wise witticisms, many visual artists portrayed the fool as an uncouth lecher who makes a mockery of love.
“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”
– William Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act 5, Scene 1

A New View into Dark Academia with The Cloisters
The Cloisters by Katy Hays dips into a new side of dark academia for me, one which has spurred a wave of curiosity from deep within, and that is art history. Art history is one of those subject that I wanted to take at school but my subject choices didn’t align right for that to happen so getting that art history immersion through Ann (just one letter off!) and this mesmerising read was truly a…

"We did not want to emphasize 'Lagerfeld the man'..., but rather 'Lagerfeld the designer'."
- Andrew Bolton, MET Museum Costume Institute curator as written in the NYT by Vanessa Friedman
With all due respect, tough shit. That's not how we get to play in the museum game anymore, my dude.

La Mort de Socrate La Mort de Socrate - a Neo classical piece, (the times of romans and Greeks..) by Jacques Louis David... 1787.  A masterpiece. This piece is very important  because at the time of conception there was a lot of political turmoil in France and the piece was made to inspire the French revolutionary movement. It is about Socrates, he had strong beliefs at that time were abstract, and as explained in the story, for his radical teachings of “corrupting the youth” he was captured, and he could’ve chosen to escape into exile, but he chose to die to teach to his pupils not to fear death. But to embrace it. The painting represents commitment to an abstract belief. Strength. Courage. He is pointing to heaven to signal the immortality of the soul, and his ideas. David picked the moment of the greatest tension, right before grabbing the chalice. The clarity of the scene, the fierce gesture by Socrates. The angles of the lighting, amongst the men the soft drapery garments... the cold surface of the bricks on the wall. The shackles on the floor as it to declare death is freedom. The light makes Socrates the brightest figure, and the painter adds the red drapery on the executioner. All eyes in the painting are looking towards him. It goes from right to left, the drama at the chalice. The pupils are pushed to the right, looking away in despair as he reaches for the poison. Critio , clutching his leg as in to beg him not to drink it, and a man on the left side of the painting.. unengaged with the scene. The man at the end of bed is Plato, (there is no Plato without Socrates) at the time Plato would’ve been 25 but instead he is painted as an old man, that is because the painter wanted to illustrate it like it was a memory played in the back of his mind, as in to say he is looking back... Jacques Louis David admired Plato and Socrates and this masterpiece does a great honor. ~inspired by the best

I went to the anarchist/abolitionist healthcare conference this weekend, and it was really a beautiful experience that I don't even have words for. Being able to share resources, knowledge, dreams, and joy together with other people invested in this work was so special, and I gained a ton of hope by seeing the many ways that other people are actively engaged in resisting these fucked up systems and building care into our communities. I gave a presentation about psych abolition, talked about resistance within the psych ward, and got a standing ovation from a room filled with 50 people, many of whom were mental health professionals looking to build solidarity. I legitimately almost cried because of being to have that experience with my mad comrades. I met so many beautiful crazy people who intimately understand what it means to survive as a mad person, and just gained so much knowledge from people actively putting their abolitionist values into practice. I want to share a few of my favorite resources that I became aware of at this conference, and I'll make another post later with some of my key takeaways.
Mutual Aid Self/Social Therapy: This is a support framework designed by one of my friends that provides an intentional structure for providing therapetuic support within communities, especially organizing communities where there's a lot of burnout. It offers so many resources for skills training to allow anyone, whether you have a background in emotional support or not, to set this up within your community. The framework is purposefully not hierarchial or transactional, and allows for actually addressing people's material conditions as well as providing space for emotional processing.
Of Unsound Mind: Incredible archive and research on psychiatric history. Mostly focused around America, but also has some info on other countries. The author of the website will be coming out with a book later this year, which I think is mostly going to be about the Trieste, Basaglia, and that history of psych resistance in Italy.
Power makes us Sick: Collective that focuses on autonomous healthcare and emotional support, especially in terms of autonomous trans healthcare. Has some fabulous zines and resources.
A Corpse among Corpses: Incredible documentary about asylum graveyards in the Midwest and the trade of graverobbing for experimentation in medical schools, and how this connects to settler colonialism, slavery, eugenics, and modern gentrification. Really do want to emphasize a trigger warning for genocide, eugenics, medical violence, self harm, antiblack racism, instituionalization, and lots of discussion of death. I talked a lot with the filmmakers, and really appreciated their care and intent in making this film as a way of bearing witness rather than exploiting atrocity in the name of art, but do want to be very clear that this film is incredibly heavy to watch and might be something worth doing with other people. It was deeply impactful for me, and made me tear up many times.
The Living Museum: Through transforming the old Creedmoor hospital grounds into a musuem and workspace for current patients to showcase their art, this space celebrates psychiatric resistance, transformation, struggle, and joy. I really want to go visit and share in that space, as it seems just so fucking cool. It seems like you might need to contact directly to schedule a visit.
Cahoots Crisis Response Model: This is one model for crisi intervention teams that respond instead of police. They are not perfect, still have some enagement with police, but are an interesting example of how to try to implement these types of programs. Since theyv'e been around for 25 years, they have a lot of knoweldeg and could be a good first group to reach out to if you're trying to create this in your community.
Overall this whole weekend was a beautiful example of how to put our values into practice, and really just wanted to share these projects with you all!

Castlevania - Imagine Vlad Tepes giving you a private tour of the louvre at night
Tumblr media
NOTES: Over the summer I went to the louvre in the daytime. I loved it but the heat was terrible and there were way way way too many people for my liking so I got to thinking - what if you had a cool radical vampire bf with cool radical vampire powers to break you in at night and make sure you get to really look at everything? I know he's a musuem girlie, no way he wouldn't take the time to personally explain the history of (and his personal expirience with) every object that really caught your eye.
Ignore the technicalities, I know breaking in probably wouldn't be as easy as just climbing through a skylight. He ate all the guards or something - whatever makes it more plausible.
WARNINGS: None, some happy crying but its mostly just fluff.
“How has no one asked why you’re carrying a blindfolded girl around yet? I know you have powers and stuff, but you cant glamour everyone on the streets of Paris… can - can you do that?”
Vlad nearly giggled as he held you closer to his cold body.
“Your human eardrums would split if I told you all the details - the words for some of the abilities I have cant be translated into english, im afraid.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck, smiling. He began to speak again.
“It also helps that we’re breaking in, and it’s nighttime.”
You paled and looked up at him, mouth slacking open.
“Wait what?”
“Oh dont act so shocked.”
The corners of your mouth quirked up. You could barely sit still as he held you, walking so smoothly it felt as if you were both laying down. You had asked him a million times where you were going, why a blindfold was necessary, and all he had given you so far was a smug “it’s a surprise darling, you have to be patient.”
That had never been one of your virtues.
The sound of the night and all the people walking around suddenly dulled and you felt yourself slowly begin to lift then descend into a cold room.
You clung to your boyfriends chest.
“Woa- jesus are we falling through someone’s roof?”
“No, no, I suppose now is an opportune time to tell you where we are and take your blindfold off.”
“Really?”
“Yes really, ill help you - here -”
His fingers untied the knot and the black silk ribbon fell from your eyes.
When you saw where you were you slapped your hand over your mouth, resisting the urge to cry.
“The louvre, my love. You said you’d like to see it with me but I cant go out during it’s business hours and you’ve always worried about the crowds - I figured I’d make the situation a little easier for the both of us. “
Now you felt hot tears spill out of your eyes and roll down your face in rivers. What had you ever done to deserve him? How could someone this amazing be as hopelessly in love with you as you were with him? You had always loved art and you’d tried to go to the louvre once with some friends before you’d met vlad, but the crowds made you too anxious and it was so hot in the daytime. At night the moon shone through the glass ceiling of the entrance room and refracted off of the big glass pyramid, the marble walls were cool to the touch.
Vlad noticed your tears and smiled.
“No need to cry dragul meu, think of it as your birthday present - though rest assured you will be getting much more than this. I greatly enjoy spoiling you, you realize.”
You laughed and pulled him into a tight hug, playing with his long black hair.
“How am I supposed to top this when it’s your birthday? Im thankful, but this is a lot already. The best birthday present I was expecting to receive like ever in my whole life was a car, maybe a lot of books or tickets to orlando horror nights if I got lucky.”
He smiled and ran his gloved hands over your back as he spoke.
“Trust me, my love, you give me the best present ive ever gotten - ever in thousands of years over thousands of lifetimes by being with me and loving me. After doing all the things ive done I never expected anyone that knows my face to stay with me, let alone someone i’ve been pining over for a decade. Lubitul meu.”
You pulled away from the hug and kissed him. He smiled into the kiss and cupped your face in his hands. After a while he pulled away.
“As much as Id enjoy standing with you and kissing you for the rest of the night, I want you to get as much time with your gift as you can.”
You grinned and took his hand, looking up at him.
“Can we start with the renaissance statues?”
“Of course”
You walked into the moonlit gallery, grabbing a map as you went. The museum was completely empty save for you two and you couldn’t have been happier.
