’Tis the season to be jolly! But it doesn’t really stop there for many of us. If you study in the southern hemisphere, you knpw that December doesn’t mean solely fairy lights, hot cocoa and ice skating dates, it also means spending hours in your local cafe trying to make an Americano last six hours (honestly, why study in a silent library surrounded by stressed out students when you could be sitting in a warm coffee shop, stimulated by the barista’s never-ending jazz playlist and the flux of people coming and going?) and dodging questions such as “How are your preparations for the session going?”, or my favourite “Have you started reading the syllabus yet?”.
Honestly, depending on how you take things in life, December can be as fun as it can be depressing. I’m a Libra, and throughout my whole life I’ve learned that a bit of compromise goes a long way, and this is the month where I can really put my theories to the test. that’s why my first essential of the month is…
Tumblr media
1. Advent Calendar
It might sound silly, but having a Christmas Advent not only is an excuse to treat yourself every day, as it also is a form of keeping track of your control over yourself. Sure, watching influencers open a christmas advent a day can be fun, the sadistic pleasure in finding out that the person who payed over €500 for a Chanel calendar is only getting a bunch of stickers and products which are barely worth being displayed in a duty free store is hard to beat, but stick with me on this one!
It’s easy to purposely forget to study, drink one too many festive cocktails, and let all the holiday discounts be a reason for you to splurge on things you wouldn’t otherwise have bought just as it’s easy to eat all the 24 chocolate truffles in one go… But not doing it is just as easy, and, I guess, a good reminder that balance is the best treat on the long run.
I genuinely HATE mini products, so I won’t be reccomending any beauty advents, sorry. I know it may feel too late to get your own, but it’s NEVER too late.
1. Venchi Prestige Calendar
2. Marchesi Calendario Dell’Avvento
3. Cailler 200g Calendar
4. Bonne Maman Jam Advent Calendar
5. Vosges haut chocolaterie Calendar
6. Torroneria Cioccolateria D. Barbero
7. Antico Caffè Novecento
8. Any of the Lindt ones… classics for a reason
2. Movie Marathon
Maybe it’s the cold, maybe it’s the desire to procrastinate, BUT my will to watch movies skyrockets during this time of the year. There is a ridiculous amount of awful films sets in this time of the year, but if you look you can find some amazing classics that are just UNSKIPPABLE. From the jolly to the perverse, here’s my official Twelve Films of Christmas
1. Eloise at Christmastime
2. The apartment
3. Holiday
4. Eyes wide Shut
5. The shop around the corner
6. White Christmas
7. Black Christmas
8. Meet me in St. Louis
9. Fanny & alexander
10. The Thin Man
11. Metropolitan
12. Spencer
3. Go all out
Whether you want to go out or simply go all out even when you’re staying in is up to you, BUT a crucial thing to my is ending the year with a BANG. Now, I’m not exactly a clubber, but I’m a big enjoyer of fun wherever and whenever, and I can’t go more than a day without having fun with my friends this time of the year. This means random aperitivo nights after leaving six hour lectures, day trips to random cities, and lotsa dinner parties. I know I’ve probably exausted everyojne with lists, but I’m gonna write yet another one, hopefully short this time, of a few activities sprinkle through your weeks, hopefully to inspire some strenght and to end the year on a sweet note.
1. Moodboard night: With the New Year right around the corner, it’s crucial to set your goals straight… and what better way than doing it with friends? Look, I personally don’t think someone should set their vision board on stone, you don’t need to stick to the things you decided to do on a random night for the rest of the year, I personally end up taking a month to write down things to help me understand my own goals and objectives, both personal and professional/ academic… But it’s so nice to talk about all of your prospectives with your friends and loved ones, wonder about the potential that the new year can bring does no harm. If you really feel like this type of thing is too personal, then I’d say you could organize an “Unrealistic Wishlist” board day, when owning a Himalaya Hermes Kelly is a totally achiavable thing! Granted, I’m a tad materialistic, but I just adore learning more about my friends through their materialistic goals, with the right outlook it can be really revealing. Plus, I’m a huge fan of arts and crafts, and I’ll take any excuse I have to do it.
2. Charcuterie dinner: One of my biggest no-nos is showing up empty handed to any dinner, maybe it’s a Brazilian thing, but I’ve never done it and don’t plan on ever doing it. With a charcuterie dinner, I have an excuse to do it! I love charcuterie dinners more than anything in the world, cheese, wine, fruits and salami… no better combination. Not to mention that it’s practically like a live personality quiz for you and your friends, as nothing is more telling of a person’s character than their cheese preference.
3. Christmas shopping afternoon: Preferably to be done with a guy to use as your own bag carrier. Whenever I need to go somewhere or do something, I like to call other people up just in case, and although I love some peace of mind to think clearly when I need to buy presents for myself, when my consumerism is altruistic I love to have someone around to give me second opinions and spare my shoulders of all the extra weight!
4. Homemade decoration and dinner: I currently don’t have an apartment of my own to decorate, but other people’s serve me just as well. One of my favorite activities has been going to my friends’ homes to arrange garlands, make dried orange slices decor and even help to carefully distribute tinsel on the christmas tree. What is a chore to some is fun to others, with the right playlist and conversation specially. Afterwards it’s crucial to have a dinner party as a treat, no decoration shall be wasted!
Tumblr media
To Discover
I feel like my consumerism is reaching an all time high right now, and I feel like I might as well share some of my current favourite discoveries with you guys. There’s nothing better than giving (and getting!) gifts from one of a kind stores, and so, I’ve made a little list of places that are definitely worth checking out:
1. Nesines: It’s a brand from barcelona that sells just the coolest shirts. I’ve just gotten one from them and I’m obsessed with the fit, the colors and the model. The quality is amaxzing, and I love that fact that their products have amazing compositions, no polyester around here! If you want a top that can elevate any pair of jeans, look nowhere else!
2. Maria de la Orden: I have to give credit where it’s due… this brand wasn’t on my radar before my mom showed it to me . Colorful velvet can definitely brighten up even the dullest winter days, especially when it’s presented in such unique shapes. Honestly their jackets are to die for, as are their headbands.
3. The obedient Daughter: came across this brand thanks to a kind destiny and now I’m absolutely OBSESSED with their curation of books and clothing. A gorgeous presentation of products that are unique but timeless… I simply NEED their Diana skirt.
4. MC2 Saint Barth: Okay not really a discovery, but THE place we should all be looking at for a perfect tongue in cheek aprés ski sweater. Ngl, I’m giving each of my siblings a sweater this christmas, and although I KNOW it might be an overdone gift, it’s a classic for a reason. And I myself know my sister would never not appreciate the opportunity to walk around Cervinia with a hot pink sweater that says “FAVOLOSA”
5. Bella Freud: Again, not a discovery, but worth a mention just because this was the month when I truly explored the brand’s full potential. Everyone knows their gorgeous sweaters with the best quotes (Godard IS GOD!), but I’m currently obsessed with their candles, ceramics and overall home accessories. Can someone please give me their Cunty mug? Please?)
Tumblr media
To be worn
Sunglasses: I’m a guilty “occhiali da nebbia” wearer, much to my friends’ dismay. Though some may think it can be a bit bizzarre to wear sunglasses out on days when the sun doesn’t seem to get any high, I don’t have any shame in looking (or at least feeling) cool no matter the weather … My current go tos are the Dior Palladium (if you get it to wear in Venice it’s even better, that way, if anyone asks, you can say you’re paying your respects for Andre Palladio’s influential architecture)
Fur trimmed everything: Okay maybe i’ve been watching one too many episodes of friends, and letting the 90s influence a bit too much over my style, but recently I’ve been obsessed with fur trimmed coats. Long or short, black or camel, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t bite when everyone was going crazy over that green trench back in 2020, but now it’s different! A classic cut with a bit of fun fur will never go out of style in my eyes.
Barretes: Okay I think barretes are not an addition to my blog, I’ve probably been proudly posting about being a proud barrette wearer since 2020, but now I’ve actually been converted, and went from being a strictly tortoiseshell hair accessories wearer to a the brighter the better one. The one thing to blame is none other than the city of Copenhagen, where I discovered Maanesten and Pico, and FEASTED.
Herbag: Taking to “To Be” oof this section a bit too literally, and even a bit too hopefully. Not only do I absolutely love the fact that it reminds me a bit of the Kelly, I also love its overall practicality, everyone I know that has it rages on and on about its endless perks. While the fact that its body is made out of canvas rather than the famous traditional Hermes leather might be a turn off to some but to me it’s just perfect, principally because I’ve been planning on getting it to use it as a school bag and I’ve had the misfortune to have once tried to carry a leather bag around all day just to practically destroy it in one day.
Scarves and Pashminas: Winter is the season when I really can’t seem to escape all black outfits, but wearing a beautifully textured pashmina ALWAYS is a game changer for me. I feel like every city in the world has a Tibet store packed with the most varied options of material, print and density, I know Milan has an incredible one (although the Paris Tibet Forever on Le Marais will always take the cake).

“MGM Jubilee Overture” – performed by the MGM Symphony Orchestra; conducted by Johnny Green
This medley overture was performed in 1954 for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s 30th anniversary. In the days of the old Hollywood Studio System, all of the major studios* – MGM, Warner Bros., Paramount, Columbia, RKO, and Universal – had their own symphony orchestras. These orchestras recorded every film score that each studio churned out (feature films and short films alike). As the studio best known for their musicals, the MGM Symphony Orchestra was arguably the best of them all, boasting world-class instrumentalists that rivaled all but the very finest orchestras in the world.
Needless to say, these studio orchestras took on a lot of work and the studios wanted only the best musicians they could get. The composers, lyricists, orchestrators, and musicians were all under contract to the studio. This set-up no longer exists in Hollywood as studios dealt with tighter profit margins in the 1960s, changing musical tastes during that decade, and the fact that modern Hollywood studios produce far fewer movies every year than they did during Hollywood's Golden Age. These days, studios prefer to hire composers/lyricists/orchestrators and musicians on an individual basis.
Almost all of the original conductors' and instrumental sectional scores to all of this music were destroyed in the early 1970s when then-MGM owner Kirk Kerkorian decided to slowly convert MGM into a real estate company. To save costs, he approved of the near-complete disposal of the studio’s music library – thrown into a landfill now underneath a golf course. Kerkorian, for copyright purposes, allowed MGM musicians to jot down piano reductions of one piece of music for every MGM movie before the original scores were to be disposed.
The songs featured in this overture are listed below along with the films they featured in: 1:20-2:09: “Singin’ in the Rain” from various films; first introduced in The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (1929), best known for its use in Singin’ in the Rain (1952) 2:09-3:19: “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” from Born to Dance (1936) 3:19-3:49: “Broadway Rhythm” from The Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935) 3:49-4:30: “The Last Time I Saw Paris” from Lady Be Good (1941) 4:30-5:11: “Temptation” from Singin’ in the Rain (1952) 5:11-5:47: “Baby It’s Cold Outside” from Neptune’s Daughter (1949) 5:47-6:37: “Be My Love” from The Toast of New Orleans (1950) 6:37-7:03: “The Trolley Song” from Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) 7:04-7:30: “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” from The Harvey Girls (1946) 7:30-7:58: “The Donkey Serenade” from The Firefly (1937) 7:58-8:57: “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz (1939) 8:57-9:24: Conclusion
Composers: Nacio Herb Brown, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Frank Loesser, Nicholas Brodszky, Hugh Martin, Ralph Blane, Harry Warren, Rudolf Friml, Herbert Stothart, and Harold Arlen
* For those wondering where Disney is among the listed major studios, RKO distributed many of Disney’s films until the 1950s and Disney would not be a major studio until the late ‘80s/early ‘90s.

Bell, Book and Candle is on TV, and this is one classic movie I would actually love a remake of. I’m now fancasting this fictive modern remake with my mom.

How do I pray the rosary? 💜
How to Pray the Rosary:
1. While holding the crucifix in your hand, make the Sign of the Cross, followed by reciting The Apostles’ Creed.
2. On the first bead next to the crucifix, recite the Our Father (that’s the prayer Jesus taught us to pray.)
3. On the three small beads, recite the Hail Mary for an increase of faith, hope, and charity.
4. Next on the big bead, recite the Glory Be.
5. Stay on the big bead. You must now decide which set of Mysteries you will pray on. There are four different Mysteries for the Rosary which I will color differently:
Joyful Mysteries (usually said on Monday and Saturday):
The Annunciation
The Visitation
The Nativity
The Presentation
The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
Luminous Mysteries (this is usually prayed on Thursday):
Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan
The Wedding of Cana
The Proclamation of the Kingdom
The Transfiguration of Jesus
The Institution of the Eucharist
Sorrowful Mysteries (this is usually prayed on Tuesday and Wednesday):
The Agony of the Garden
The Scourging at the Pillar
The Crowning of Thorns
The Carrying of the Cross
The Crucifixion
Glorious Mysteries (this is usually prayed on Sunday and Wednesday):
The Resurrection
The Ascension of Jesus
The Decent of the Holy Spirit
The Assumption of Mary
The Crowning of Mary
6. After you pick which Mystery you want, using the big bead you are paused on recite the first mystery. Reflect on it briefly.
7. Staying on the big bead, recite the Our Father.
8. Move upwards to choose a side you want to start on. Each set is called a decade. Keeping in the mind the first mystery. On each small bead of a decade, pray recite the Hail Mary meanwhile, meditate on the first mystery. (For example, if I wanted to pray the Glorious Mysteries rosary, I could meditate on The Resurrection for the first decade, while reciting the Hail Mary for each bead.)
9. When you are finished the tenth Hail Mary, notice there is a bead that separates the start of the second mystery. Recite the Glory Be (I like to make the sign of the cross with the crucifix when I do this) and then recite the Fatima Prayer.
10. Now you start the second mystery. Recall the second mystery, meditate on it briefly, recite the Our Father. Move onto the new set of decades and repeat the steps above until you are finished making your way around.
11. Go to the big bead. Recite Hail Holy Queen and concluding prayer. I’ve seen people do different ones but I like the Rosary Prayer {Verse) Let us pray, (Response) O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.}.
12. To finish, use the crucifix to make the sign of the cross.
13. I personally like to kiss the crucifix afterwards as to say thank You to Jesus, but that’s not really required lol.

The Power of Praying the Rosary
Those are just some of many videos that describe it. I love to follow along with Mother Angelica and her nuns. The videos made on EWTN show pictures as they pray on each mystery and really helps my visual mind stay focused. Here’s a link to one of the four:
youtube
The Glorious Mysteries led by Mother Angelica
When you say your Rosary, don’t rush through it like you’re reading a newspaper. There is no race. It’s no contest. This is your time to develop your spirituality and holiness. Some people have trouble finishing the rosary due to its repetition, especially when tired. One of them is me if I say it before bed. It is better to meditate one or two decades than to pray nicely on one and rush the rest. Try to make each mystery like a movie in your head. Also, don’t wear the Rosary around your neck like souvenir. It must be treated with respect, as the devil sees it as a sword.
Here’s some quotes about the Rosary:
“The rosary is a means given by the Virgin for contemplating Jesus and, meditating on his life, for loving and following him always more faithfully.” - Pope Benedict XVI
“The Rosary is my favorite prayer.” - St. Pope John Paul II
“You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary." - Mary to Blessed Alan de la Roche
“The Rosary is the best therapy for these distraught, unhappy, fearful, and frustrated souls, precisely because it involves the simultaneous use of three powers: the physical, the vocal, and the spiritual…” - Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
““Even if you are on the brink of damnation, even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil as sorcerers do who practice black magic, and even if you are a heretic as obstinate as a devil, sooner or later you will be converted and will amend your life and will save your soul, if—and mark well what I say—if you say the Holy Rosary devoutly every day until death for the purpose of knowing the truth and obtaining contrition and pardon for your sins.” - St. Louis de Montfort
“When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary.” - Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche
Tumblr media
There are a lot of amazing stories of the Rosary. I think my absolute favorite story of the Rosary is how it effected a man called Blessed Bartolo Longo!
Edit: I also highly recommend do not pray the Rosary while you are driving. I don’t want to hear about you dying. Keep your eyes alert at all times. (Don’t use your phone in your hands either. Texting can wait. If you have the ability to use it hands free for a phone call, then of course that is ok if you really need it.) Anyway, follow your laws and stay safe! God bless!

Countdown to Christmas
Following up this post, here are my top ten Classic Hollywood movies for the holiday season.
10. The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942): Ok, to be honest, this is the only one on the list I haven’t seen before. But, I’ve heard good things, so I’m planning on treating myself to it this year.
Tumblr media
9. Bachelor Mother (1939): Ginger Rogers and David Niven star in this rom-com that takes place throughout the holiday season. It follows Rogers’s character as she becomes a single mother, taking in an orphaned baby. Comedic misunderstandings ensue.
Tumblr media
8. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944): A classic! The movie follows a family in the year leading up to the St. Louis World’s Fair. It includes a memorable scene in which Judy Garland sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Tumblr media
7. All That Heaven Allows (1955): Another film that takes place over time, including Christmas. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson star in this romance about a widow and the younger man she falls in love with. Visually stunning!
Tumblr media
6. The Bishop’s Wife (1947): Cary Grant makes every holiday better. Here, he plays an angel sent to help a bishop and his wife work on their marriage.
Tumblr media
5. I’ll Be Seeing You (1944): Another Ginger Rogers flick! This time, she’s a prisoner on leave for Christmas (apparently that used to be a thing) and Joseph Cotten is a soldier, also home for the holidays. A beautiful romance and a surprisingly mature depiction of PTSD given the time. Gif by auldcine.
Tumblr media
4. The Thin Man (1934): One of my favorite movies, so I’ll use the fact that it takes place around Christmas and New Year’s as an excuse to rewatch it!
Tumblr media
3. Remember the Night (1940): Prosecutor Fred MacMurray takes shoplifter Barbara Stanwyck home for the holidays to keep an eye on her before their upcoming trial.
Tumblr media
2. The Shop Around the Corner (1940): A great ensemble cast brings to life the story of coworkers in a small shop in Budapest around Christmas. The central romance later inspired In the Good Old Summertime and You’ve Got Mail.
Tumblr media
1. Christmas in Connecticut (1945): To entertain returning vet Dennis Morgan, journalist Barbara Stanwyck must learn how to be the perfect homemaker she claims to be in her magazine articles.

Happy holidays and happy watching!

Here's our top five TCM picks for the week of July 13: 1. My Journey Through French Cinema (1958) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Tuesday July 14: If you've always wanted to get into classical French cinema but haven't had the time, then I highly recommend this loving and thorough tribute from director Bertrand Tavernier. This documentary is a good choice to DVR and then watch in parts along with the films Tavernier discusses. 2. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) at 10:30 pm ET/7:30 pm PT Wednesday July 15: This nostalgic MGM musical about a close-knit Midwestern family remains one of old Hollywood's best comfort movies. There's nothing more joyous than Judy Garland singing "The Trolley Song" or more touching than the holiday standard "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." 3. Bachelor Mother (1939) at 6:30 pm ET/3:30 pm PT Thursday, July 16: Celebrate Ginger Rogers' 109th birth date with this fan favorite rom-com about a department store clerk who ends up adopting a baby. David Niven is also wonderful as the store owner who falls for Ginger. 4. The Grapes of Wrath (1940) at 10:15 pm ET/7:15 pm PT Friday July 17: Director John Ford's drama about the plight of a displaced Oklahoma family is perhaps the starkest screen depiction of the Great Depression's impact on ordinary Americans. Henry Fonda's performance as Tom Joad has become an iconic part of American pop culture. 5. The Maltese Falcon (1941) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Saturday, July 18: There's no better way to spend a Saturday night than with this essential noir about a disparate gang of crooks who are in search of a priceless objet d'art. Humphrey Bogart's literate, cynical turn as detective Sam Spade launched him into stardom. FYI: I'll be live-tweeting about this film on Saturday night. round up // AUGUST 21
Tumblr media
Happy 2nd birthday to these Round Ups! For two years I’ve been making monthly pop culture picks, and they’ve included:
More than 200 movies
32 TV shows and specials, plus 8 different Saturday Night Live Round Ups
27 albums, singles, playlists, and more music picks
13 podcasts
12 books
2 concerts
There have also been articles, events, museums, social media bits, trailers, and a service that helps you find movies across streaming platforms. (Find all of them here.) This month I’m adding a few more, like:
2 podcasts
2 albums
5 vampire movies
A conversation between two GOATs
A very funny dead guy
A terrifying Robert Mitchum performance
Another Dumb Rom-Com I Nevertheless Enjoyed
Here’s to another year!
August Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
1. Jungle Cruise (2021)
Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean with a dash of The African Queen. I like all those movies, so sue me, I had a nice time! Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
2. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Genetically-enhanced sharks try to break free of their cages in an ocean research facility, chaos ensues for the characters, and it’s a delight for us. For no intelligent reason, I love movies that make me guess who’s going to get killed off next, so a big dumb shark movie starring L.L. Cool J and Samuel L. Jackson? It’s a particular brand of joy. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 5.5/10
Tumblr media
3. Double Feature — Adam Sandler Comedies: 50 First Dates (2004) + Murder Mystery (2019)
Adam Sandler movies are little like IcyHot for the brain—that is, they’re the relaxing kind of mind-numbing. Thanks to a stressful month at work, I watched six Sandler flicks in August—which I don’t necessarily recommend but also don’t regret—and the Netflix original Murder Mystery (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10) was one of the the best of the bunch. It’s a silly spoof of Agatha Christie’s work, and it’s a scenic two-hour European vacay. I also gave 50 First Dates (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10) another try and was pleasantly surprised. Once you get past some of the gross-out humor at the beginning, you’ll find a sweet story all about how we need to keep showing up for the people we love.
Tumblr media
4. Double Feature — SNL Comedies: Wayne’s World (1992) + Hot Rod (2007)
My love for Saturday Night Live is more than well-documented, so exactly zero mes were surprised that I loved these flicks from its alums. Wayne’s World (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10) follows up with Wayne and Garth in the basement we first saw on late night. Now they have the opportunity to make it big on TV thanks to a sleazy exec (Rob Lowe). Brian Doyle-Murray and Chris Farley show up, and so do Laverne and Shirley? Hot Rod (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10) follows Rod (Andy Samberg) as he tries to make it big as a stuntman and impress his stepdad (Ian McShane). Will Arnett, Bill Hader, and Chris Parnell show up, and now I can mostly forgive all those boys in high school who quoted this movie non-stop.
Tumblr media
5. Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
If those SNL comedies weren’t enough silliness for you, how about you add some Bernie to your lineup? Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman are wannabe-yuppies who think they’ve got their  career breaks when an exec named Bernie invites them to his vacation home for the weekend. What they don’t know is that Bernie (Terry Kiser) has been laundering money, is connected to the mob, and, is now, um, dead. The right thing would be to call the police, but then we wouldn’t have a 97-minute high-concept comedy, now would we? Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
6. Twilight series (2008-12)
I mostly skipped the Twilight phenomenon at its peak, but I’m so glad I hopped on the train years later—this series of vampire vs. werewolf showdowns are ridiculous.  But major kudos to the filmmakers who somehow turned a dump truck of nonsensical gobbledygook and unhealthy teenage relationships into something insanely watchable. Also, major kudos to Billy Burke and his understated, curmudgeonly, sarcastic performance. Bella’s dad is the MVP with the only appropriate responses to all of the nonsense he's forced to participate in and the only tether this franchise has to reality. Be sure to watch with a friend so you have someone else to process this weirdness with. Series Crowd: 8/10 // Series Critic: 5/10
Tumblr media
7. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at The Muny
You know what’s great? Live theater! This month I made my first trip back to the stage at America’s oldest and largest outdoor amphitheater, the Muny in St. Louis. Their productions never disappoint, and these performers reminded me of Howard Keel, Jane Powell, and Russ Tamblyn in the best ways.
Tumblr media
8. Wimbledon (2004)
Paul Bettany and Kirsten fall in love at Wimbledon! Frankly, that premise alone should be enough to sell you on this very winning rom-com. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
Tumblr media
9. Career Opportunities (1991)
This month’s Dumb Rom-Com I Nevertheless Enjoyed! Frank Whaley and Jennifer Connelly fall in love while stuck overnight at a Target—which honestly sounds like a dream scenario—and since it’s a John Hughes script, it’s got some heart beneath its thin premise. John Hughes directing would’ve made it better, but there’s enough Hughes in there to catch my heart. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 4.5/10
Tumblr media
10. First Blood (1982)
Aka Rambo: Part I. Sylvester Stallone is a tough-as-nails Vietnam vet, and Brian Dennehy is the self-righteous sheriff who ticks him off. It digs a bit into PTSD and how we don’t take care of our veterans, but mostly, it’s just Stallone going ape with a knife and explosives. Oddly, also from the same director as Weekend at Bernie’s! Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
August Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. TCM’s The Plot Thickens Season 2 (2021)
You know those movies that make you ask, “How on Earth did this get made?” This season of The Plot Thickens, subtitled The Devil’s Candy, is an attempt to answer that question. Pretty much no one thinks 1990’s The Bonfire of the Vanities works as a film—including yours truly—and reporter Julie Salomon documented many of its production troubles leading to the final product. A must-listen for anyone who loves hearing behind-the-scenes stories or just gets a kick out of schadenfreude.
Tumblr media
2. Gene and Roger (2021)
Gene and Roger, the summer series on The Big Picture podcast, is an overview and reflection on the work of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, starting with the launch of their individual careers in the ‘60s through their partnership that lasted into the ‘90s. Another must-listen for movie lovers, especially those who love digging into the history and criticism.
Tumblr media
3. Gold-Diggers Sound by Leon Bridges (2021)
Chill vibes and cool groves to transition you from Summer to Autumn.
Tumblr media
4. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Come for the Clint Eastwood, stay for the Ennio Morricone. Actually you can stay for Eastwood, too, because his humor is at his driest, and for Eli Wallach, whose Tuco is an insanely charming cockroach. It’s almost three hours, but this treasure hunt breezes by like a tumbleweed in the wind. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
5. AFI’s Master Class - The Art of Collaboration: Steven Spielberg and John Williams (2011)
Two GOATS talking about making some of the GOATs. They share clips and explain their collaborative process (including on projects like Jaws and Schindler’s List), and they take questions from film students at AFI. I’m only wishing it were 10 hours instead of 1!
Tumblr media
6. The Night of the Hunter (1955)
Robert Mitchum’s terrifying preacher elevates this classic into more than just a standard crime thriller. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
7. Respect (2021)
While a few scenes indulge in melodrama, Jennifer Hudson’s killer performance—both in vocals and character work—more than makes up for it. This Aretha Franklin biopic hits the familiar beats, but it makes you feel like you’re in the room listening to Franklin sing , which is really all you want from a movie like this. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
8. Solar Power by Lorde (2021)
At first listen, this minimalist pop record sounds worlds away from the angst of Pure Heroine and the melodrama of Melodrama. At second listen, you realize it’s the Lorde you know and love, just with a Laurel Canyon influence. Carole King even gets a shout!
Also in August…
This month Kyla and I checked out Loveline, a call-in radio show popular during the run of Gilmore Girls.  Should our favorite Yale students give up dating OR call into the syndicated radio show Loveline? Should Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla give strangers advice OR make fun of them? Oh, and Germany OR Florida? Listen to ep. 107 of SO IT’S A SHOW?
The '40s are coming! Reviews of 1940s Best Picture winners are on their way, and I kicked it off with an overview of the Academy that decade focusing on how they responded to World War II and their new prestigious reputation.

tagged by my darling @silverscene to list my top 10 comfort movies. thank you eliza 💕
1. singin’ in the rain (1952)
Tumblr media
as i’ve said before, singin’ in the rain is my all-time favorite movie as well as my first old hollywood movie. i’ve seen it upwards of 20 times and i still love it to pieces.
2. the princess bride (1987)
Tumblr media
if you’ve never seen this movie, go watch it now. there’s a reason it’s a cult classic.
3. bringing up baby (1938)
Tumblr media
although in my humble opinion holiday and the philadelphia story are the superior grant/hepburn collaborations from an artistic standpoint, this one never fails to put a smile on face.
4. casablanca (1942)
Tumblr media
maybe an odd choice for a list of comfort movies, but this film has a lot of sentimental value for me. i watched it for the first time when i was maybe 10 or 11 years old, early in my exploration of classic hollywood and i fell in love with the glamorous setting and dramatic story.
5. meet me in st. louis (1944)
Tumblr media
this was another film i watched early on and instantly fell in love with. judy garland is just so precious in it.
6. arsenic and old lace (1944)
Tumblr media
honestly it’s very hard to watch this and not come out of it in at least a slightly better mood than when you started.
7. on the town (1949)
Tumblr media
just a fun, goofy late ‘40s mgm musical with a great cast.
8. guys and dolls (1955)
Tumblr media
a lot of people don’t like this movie, but i love it. it’s just so fun and wacky.
9. his girl friday (1940)
Tumblr media
a little hard to follow the first time you watch it bc of the fast-paced dialogue, but absolutely worth it.
10. my man godfrey (1936)
Tumblr media
i just love carole lombard a lot.
i’ll tag: @an-elephant--never----forgets @celiabedelia @silver-screen-nostalgia @classicfilmgemss @missgarbos @ritahayworrth @rememberedkisses @genelizatierney @filminghere @gobbeecompany @joanleslies @littlemissluciatrask and anyone else who would like to try!

1. The Parent Trap (1998) favorite movie since I was 10
2. A Room with a view (1986) favorite movie bis since I was 16
3. Meet me in St Louis (1944), favorite musical (a tie with a bunch of others)
