Villa Medusa, 2006
Exhibition of 3 large chandelier-like structures, based on 19th-century engraved images by German zoologist Ernst Haeckel, made of transparent silicone rubber. Hosfelt Gallery, New York, November 2006

The 3 works are based on the 19th-Century German zoologist Ernst Haeckel's engravings of medusae (the Greek word for jellyfish). As images themselves, they're strongly suggestive of some sort of organic chandeliers or lighting . Of great inspiration were Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka exquisitely wrought, tiny glass marine specimens, which include jellyfish, within the collection of the Harvard Natural History Museum.

Using a scaled up 2-D pattern, I made the initial forms in clay, from which I made 2-part plaster molds, then cast each form in polyurethane rubber. There are about 800 pieces of individual pieces of rubber in total, stitched together with monofilament. The rubber forms are suspended by an armature made of copper tubing. The works radiates light by internal lighting fixtures.

All 3 works took about a year and a half to make. I made most of the forms and molds whilst on a 7-month residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. During that winter I read Herman Melville's Moby Dick, which at times seemed as interminable as a New England winter. Especially the 10-page comparison of the "whiteness of the whale"... Somehow, engaged in the construction of my own behemoth, and the not so thin veiling of homoerotic longing, helped keep me aboard the Pequod.

I've had this sitting around as a sketch for awhile, finally had time to finish it! Hoping to do more mythology illustration this year.

This new Interpretation of Medusa in the new episode of Percy jackson, as a survivor of abuse that directs her pain, because of missing justice, against people that she associates with her abusers, shows not only how much Rick Riordan has grown as a storyteller and interpreter of mythology but also how much we as a community have grown in interpreting and understanding the deeper meaning of mythological storys and the context they were made in.

I’m actually LOVING how Rick Riordan, and the other writers of the show, took his initial concept of a Percabeth rivalry fueled by that of their parents and kind of turned it on its head?
Now, instead of Annabeth being wary of Percy because he’s a son of Poseidon, he’s wary of her because she made a callous impression on him. They get off to a rocky start even before finding out who Percy’s father is, and when they finally do, Annabeth doesn’t care. Instead of them fighting because of who their parents are, they’re fighting over their own opposed worldviews.
Then, instead of them arguing over which of the gods is cooler and who was right in the story of Medusa, they realize that, just like Medusa, Annabeth is a victim of her mother and that, unlike Medusa, she is a far kinder and stronger person, unwilling to repeat the cycle of hurt. They realize that, like his father, Percy often acts without considering potential consequences and that, unlike his father, he is a far kinder and stronger person, willing to step up for someone he wronged and whom he cares about.
Instead of Percy and Annabeth’s rivalry being focused on that of their parents, it’s focused on who they are, themselves. But the path to friendship is still the same: a realization that they have each other’s backs, no matter what, because they’re not their parents after all.

I really am obsessed with this Medusa iteration. The snakes styled into a 1950's low bun? The red lip? The hat and veil just covering her eyes? Her voice, soft and beguiling yet always as if she's on the verge of tears? So good.
