Arcane Characters and their musical history + music taste

is this in the canon universe or an au? idk. maybe a bit of both <3

this is my first hc post, so have mercy on me! i have no idea if i’m formatting this correctly. this feels like a thought dump. you can also tell that i was an orchestra kid middle-high school and that i’m extremely partial to jazz :P

Caitlyn

• definitely had the classic piano + violin upbringing combo

• teen Caitlyn going ham at the violin? yeah. she was definitely first chair and everything

• her musical history is partly why Caitlyn’s posture is impeccable

• but truth be told…. our favorite enforcer has an affinity to the bass guitar

• which is HOT. (especially to a certain pink-haired someone)

• can sight read complicated bass lines and practices up in her room a lot, the amp blasting

• isn’t picky with her music taste but is nostalgic for pieces she learned growing up and a bit of jazz

• if she’s feeling particularly pine-y over a certain pinkette she’d pull out the yearning indie pop i’d feel

• i want to say she went through the dodie in her primary years -> hozier in her secondary years-adulthood pipeline but maybe that’s me projecting a little LMAOO

Jinx

• learns music very easily, could play any instrument she wanted to tbh

• but is surprisingly kin to the piano and violin, and silco has her playing music in The Last Drop occasionally

• i love the idea of Jinx practicing piano, brows knitted in concentration, and Silco watching her from the door frame practice and master a piece like the dad he is (definitely brags to Sevika about Jinx’s musicality afterwards)

• Jinx memorizing children’s tunes to annoy Sevika (and maybe heal her inner child a little) and all of Silco’s favorites to make him proud (though he always is, regardless)

• is so. SO good at her bowing and picking (in relation to the violin). it might sound chaotic at times but Jinx’s pizzicato + staccato are always so clean

• in terms of general music taste, i see Jinx as a hyperpop girl but i‘m interested to see what other people think

• also indulges in very dramatic classical music- both listening AND playing, i know Jinx puts all of her emotion into the music she plays

• p!atd/fob/tøp phase HAD to have happened at some point

Ekko

• local percussionist icon… everyone knows that Ekko knows how to make a good beat

• he’d tinker around and create his own instruments- better with every invention

• it’s giving rubber band guitar kid but 10x better

• got into drumming as a teenager and spray painted some cool (and slightly angsty) patterns onto his drum set

• also can definitely dance… not as related but…

• can play the viola as well and he played duets with jinx/powder growing up on the streets

• always thought that jinx was so impressive with her playing skills n he definitely tried to impress her with his own music

• this boy could/can VIBRATO!!! and he definitely smiles when he’s really into the music he’s playing too- you can see the joy written across his face

• he doesn’t play viola much anymore as an adult, not unless some of the Zaun children convince him to perform and play for them

• Ekko totally bonded with Jinx and their love for hyperpop when they were younger

• i feel like he’d generally listen to a lot of hype workout music, hip hop, and punk rock/alt rock

• Vi never really had the chance to play any music, nor did she really have an interest in playing growing up

• but I’m thinking of her finding Vander’s old guitar in a storage room one day and being determined to play it

• she’s embarrassed to ask Vander for help and it definitely takes a bit of time but Vi eventually masters Blackbird (by the Beatles) with Vander teaching her

• Vi is amazed that her hands could create sounds so lovely, and falls in love with the guitar- although she never really gets to learn many songs before she’s sent to prison

• But with the help of Caitlyn, Vi is able to start practicing again (she only remembers Blackbird, thinks it’s a bit embarrassing) ((Caitlyn thinks it’s cute))

• onto music taste: this girl is mainly all workout music i’m sorry…. but there’s probably a bunch of alt pop like chase atlantic and the neighborhood. also- doja cat.

• can I say she still listens to the Beatles sometimes because it reminds her of Vander and her old family <3 (idk why my brain is INSISTENT on it being the Beatles but)

• thinks that boy bands are the funniest thing ever. secretly jams out to a couple of their many of their love songs due to a certain Kiramann. accidentally becomes a 1D stan because of it

Mel

• was drawn to the cello from the very first time she watched an orchestral performance

• definitely vented out her emotions through playing music as a teen

• understands music theory really well and can play any tempo you give her

• would bring a small spray bottle for her rock stop (this is SO niche i’m so sorry i’m a cello player)

• first cello. top of the orchestra hierarchy in class

• Mel rarely has time to play anymore, but she gets extremely nostalgic listening to the cello and still uses it as a form of escapism when extremely stres.

• her music taste is. the Jazz in the Background playlist on spotify

• secret lover of ariana grande, taylor swift, and katy perry

• jayce walks into Mel humming California Girls once and almost loses his shit before remembering she’d murder him if he laughed outright at her

Viktor

• always wished he could be in an orchestra but never did

• studied music theory !!!!! and adored a violin that Heimerdinger gifted him when he entered the academy

• I also feel like Viktor has piano hands and definitely knows his way around one

• composes most of the music he plays but also loves indulging himself in improv

• music is a very personal thing for Viktor so he rarely performs/shares his music with others

• Viktor can SING. but you’d never know and he’s never tell you.

• his passion for music is second only to his passion for science and innovation

• Viktor also seems like a jazz listener to me…. and mitski. and other Sad Gay™ music

• creature w/ orchestra by half•alive is the most viktor song on the planet. go listen to it rn

Jayce

• trumpet kid (god i don’t know anything about band or band kids but)

• if he was in orchestra, he’d be THAT violin (derogatory)

• despite his big head, Jayce really is quite talented at the instruments he hones his skills on

• would be a very enthusiastic section leader

• front of the marching band, framed all of his band photos from “the glory days”

• Paramore boy. Ricky Montgomery. Imagine Dragons. very random music taste. closeted Lil Nas X fan (only Viktor and Mel know)

• I have a song for him as well. Vienna by Billy Joel <3

the NME article that was equal parts fun & frustrating...

The band explained more towards the end of 2006 about what had happened during this September 22-23 interview. Brendon also said “NME thrives on beef. The writer spent two days with us trying to get us to talk shit about My Chem, the Killers and Fall Out Boy and what he got out of us was a quote taken out of context.” The quote he’s talking about was the “Emo is bullshit. We want to be the new Radiohead” on the cover. Nobody ever said that. Brendon said the first half of that quote, and then Ryan said something (at a totally different point) that was twisted to imply the second half. Here’s what Ryan was actually saying:

NME: You cover Radiohead’s Karma Police in your live set. As an act who have achieved commercial success on a global scale, but also managed to retain their artistic integrity, are they the benchmark? Ryan: Yeah. Pretty much Radiohead and The Beatles are the only bands to have done it.

The Panic guys needed to address that misquote in way too many interviews over the next couple years. By late 2006 Ryan was having to clarify with statements like “…what we meant was that we’re influenced by what they’ve done in creating something that’s their own… it doesn’t mean we want to sound like them, it just means we admire the way they do things.” He said many times that his quote had been misunderstood. However, at the Kuala Lumpur press conference in August 2008 it sounded like Ryan blamed Brendon for the quote and then said that Brendon didn’t actually mean they were the new Radiohead. Brendon definitely took the fall more than once for the full quote on the cover of NME. Basically, it was really unfortunate that so many other journalists referenced this NME cover when they were searching for basic info on the band (or quotes). Even in 2008 waaaay too many interviews included a question that went something like “so I’ve heard you guys want to be the new Radiohead?” A few journalists just took it as fact and went ahead with writing that the band considered themselves the new Radiohead. It really made P!ATD look silly & unnecessarily pretentious… and all of that only happened because NME acted like such a tabloid sometimes.

I honestly liked a lot of NME’s coverage of the band over the years because they’d get pictures and access to moments that weren’t covered by a ton of other people. It wasn’t always the same old tired pictures & basic news. However, you often had to wade through the journalist’s nonsense in the longer articles to get to the actual info. Sometimes it was like they were working overtime to find/create any hint of drama.

The band had been saying since summer that Jon was the only one who really drank (he was underage at the time, but the whole band had been open about discussing Brendon’s drinking with William Beckett that spring too). Jon had turned 21 earlier in September, but NME still made his drinking into a weird focus during the interview… like they pointed out how Jon was on his second beer, how the other 3 guys didn’t drink, how Jon looked the worse for wear the next morning, how he was lying on the sofa sweating out a late night, and then wrote that Jon “says that the rest of Panic! don’t have a problem with his drinking” with a quote from Jon saying “it’s not as if I’m an alcoholic.” It was just a strange thing to keep bringing up.

This was also the season where Brendon seemed really off for a while (he’s shared more since then about how his meds weren’t working for him). So maybe that’s part of what played into this interview, but I also think it was a problem how the journalist tried to push Brendon until they finally got something dramatic & exclusive to write about. During the interview Spencer mentioned that some fans had tried to follow Brendon’s mom home, and Brendon said she’d had a sticker on her car that said something like “my son’s the singer in P!ATD.” The journalist was laughing at Brendon and the rest of the band kept interrupting him & laughing so he couldn’t defend his mom or explain. They practically ganged up on him and made fun of his mom... so yeah, it’s understandable that he would finally tell everyone to f— off and then be done with the interview. It’s his mother. Some fans pointed out how meaningful it would be for Brendon to have his mom finally be proud of him after his parents had been so unsupportive while he was trying to finish high school & pursue the band. (There was a lot of fan discussion that viewed Brendon’s response as natural. I remember a couple girls saying imagine if you heard that your mom was in a situation because of your fans, but you couldn’t be there. I also think people could read between the lines and see that Brendon hadn’t been into this interview for a while before he just gave up). The NME journalist wrote that Brendon had a “tantrum.” But it sounded like Brendon just looked at his phone for the rest of the interview and refused to participate. Ryan ended up doing the same thing in a 2008 interview with a Big Cheese journalist who was clearly trying to find an unflattering angle for the band... Ryan just sat in the corner, read his book, and refused to participate. It’s understandable.

Here’s another example of how NME intentionally misquoted Brendon this season, and how they changed their tone in how they portrayed him after he refused to cooperate & trash other bands during the interview in this post.

one last complaint: NME couldn’t even fact check their photo captions?? Maybe I’m just confused, but they labeled the picture above of Brendon looking into the mirror with Jon & Spencer behind him as “waiting backstage at Radio City Hall.” Even if you ignore how those outfits are totally different from the ones they actually wore backstage at Radio City Hall (and are identical to the ones they wore for the NME photoshoot), there’s still this NME clipping where the photographer outright says those photos were shot at Industria Studios.

I did appreciate most aspects of NME, though. They didn’t make anywhere near the level of mistakes that MTV, Rolling Stone, Alt Press, and other big publications made in their articles about P!ATD. My main problem was how NME intentionally tried to twist things or magnify drama. I just wish they would’ve been more responsible with their writing.

You have been stranded on the Island of Do-Nothing-All-Day. A beautiful, idyllic paradise island in the Pacific Ocean. You are allowed to take one real life person; one character from a novel; and three characters from Glee. You are only allowed to take old fashioned books, cd's and dvd's - there is no internet. Choose 3 cd's, 3 dvd's and 3 books to take too. You may unfortuntately be stranded there for at least 6 months. Choose wisely! Chin up, it's a hard cross to bear.

Easy enough.

Real life person - my spouse. No one grounds or knows me better, and will prevent me from murdering everyone else I choose.

Novel person - Minerva McGonagall. She knows how to get shit done. We are not staying on this island for six months - we're staying for two or three. Period.

Three Glee people - Carole Hummel-Hudson. She's a nurse, we need someone with that knowledge because fights are going to break out, snakes/spiders/sharks exist. Kurt Hummel. He knows how to work with his hands, furthering proof we aren't staying on the island six months. And Sue Sylvester. She also knows how to rough it, while not being soft and getting shit done. Her, McGonagall, and Carole only take the month to relax before they too get tired and want to return to civilization. Plus two of them are mothers, so they deserve the island break themselves.

Three CD's - POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl OTS. Shit gets serious when you blast this soundtrack, and very motivational. P!ATD's DOAB. It's one of the few cd's I can listen to without skipping a single track. And Bring Me To Life Evanescence CD - I'm gonna be emo enough with the same view and constant paranoia about death by a spider bite and my gastritis flaring up that I'm never going to get to an ER. Let me have this!

Three movies - All three of the Lord of the Rings dvds. Extended versions! I want to feel like an elf while exploring this island later.

Three books - Struck By Lightning, it's a comfort book that will motivate me to get off my ass. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It's my favorite Harry Potter book, no other reason. And maybe a dictionary (hollowed out, because inside is a first-aid kit, protein bars, aloe vera, and an electric blanket).

I like colorful clothes too, high waisted jeans and shorts and boots. I'm not very fashionable but I try lol.

Some positive traits: I'm optimistic, friendly, energetic, organized, enthusiastic, observant, happy, open-minded, loving, encouraging and inquisitive!!

I love learning new things!! Currently I'm learning Korean, how to draw, how to paint and songs on the saxophone.

Although I love going out, nothing beats lazy days at home. I can spend hours by myself and still be happy. When alone I usually sleep or watch a movie/anime or practice my drawing or saxophone or try and learn something new!

I have a horrible memory and can never remember important dates 😭 I've forgotten my own birthday a few times (rip) so people can get mad at me for missing appointments, forgetting birthdays and other important days. I try my best to organize everything necessary on my phone calendar so I can be reminded.

I love seeing people happy! Nothing can fulfill my day more than knowing I put a smile on someone's face! I usually try my best to help out anyone who needs it and to the best of my ability! This has led to me getting taken advantage of in the past but I can't help but try and make others happy. I've developed a thicker skin and some trust issues as I've grown up because of it.

I love hyping my friends/family up!! Do you need a boost in confidence? Here I am, ready to help you remember the absolute king/queen/royalty that you are!! I'm usually very energetic and enthusiastic about many things and I love spreading positivity around!!

My love language is physical touch! So touch is very important to me in my relationships. Though I am insecure so I tend to think that I smother the people I care about with too much affection idk lol. I live for hugs and cuddles and hand holding 👉🏿👈🏿 but because of that I feel like I'm very clingy and annoying skskfksjd

I'm introverted in nature so although I mean usually full of energy and love making new friends, I can't do it for too long lol. My social battery runs out really fast and I have to hide away and recharge before I can be fully social again, otherwise I won't be my best self. I treasure personal time and understand when people need time for themselves too.

I love spontaneity!! I love living in the moment and doing stuff just for the hell of it!! Wanna go on a road trip? Dance in the rain? Build houses for charity? Go to McDonald's at 2am? Go on a long walk? SIGN ME UP!!

I can also be lazy and unmotivated to do stuff. If something doesn't interest me, I'd find myself incapable of doing it or I'd do it with great difficulty. I'm one of those 'do something when inspiration/motivation hits you otherwise it'll be absolute shit' types.

But when I do have motivation/inspiration that's when my perfectionism comes in and I have to do it in the best possible way and anything less is an insult to me, my family, my ancestors and descendants lmaoo. Unfortunately I subconsciously set a very high bar for myself which can be overwhelming and stressful but when I manage to produce work of that quality, it's very satisfying and rewarding jshkshdhsj

I have more to add but I feel like this is getting way too long 💀 lemme just move to the next section heheheh

Hobbies: I LOVE listening to music, learning new things, watching movies/anime, sleeping, reading, writing, playing saxophone (I'm still learning tho lol), swimming, drawing, journaling, making friends, and cooking!

It’s 3 am in the morning. Almost everyone is fast asleep or in their homes, well almost. The night sky is littered with diamond in the sky. The streets were silent but it was comforting. A few people walked here and there. And a few cars passes by there and here. “What are we doing up so late?” A silver haired man said as he yawned. “We’ll be going to Mc Donald’s! What else?” The female responded as she smiled at him. “Is it even open at this time?” He asked. “Koushi, darling, it is open,” Kay, the lover of our beloved silvered male man said as she smiled. Sugawara chuckled and held her hand, the smile on his face was evident. “You know, we should be sleeping by now right?” He said as he pulled her closer. “And so what? I wasn’t planning on sleeping early! I slept the whole day yesterday and missed the chance to hang out with you,” The girl responded.

A small blush appeared on the male’s face and he giggled. “That’s very sweet bu-“ He was about to say but was silenced by the girl. “That was very sweet but we could’ve done this later on or tomorrow. Well, sorry to break it to you, Love. But, we are here,” She said as she pulled the male inside the fast food chain. And soon enough, the two got their orders and enjoyed their meal. “I don’t know why but this hits different,” Kay said as she eat a French fry. “It really does. Especially since you are here,” Sugawara stated as he patted her head. Now, she was the one blushing. As the two chatted, the other customers and staff glanced at them every now and then. None of them were annoyed at their interactions. On the contrary, they enjoyed watching them,

Some felt envious of their relationship. Some dreamt to have something like that. And others remembered the times of old. The two were so sweet, it’s almost too much. Laughter and chattering echoed through the building from both the couple and the people around them. Then they were dub the “3 am couple” as the two would often venture in that restaurant at 3 am in the morning.

OOH HMM this is a good one. most of what i daydream about is just content that will end up going in the fic sooner or later so i gotta think about this. i WILL say that the weyoun in all my fics is a continuation of the one from ridok’tala’s story, so he carries the distant scars of that relationship w/ him all the time.

oh in ToP theres a bit of timeskip between chapter 3 and 4 where the relationship builds up a bit off screen. i didnt get a chance to go into a lot of detail but they definitely Made Out at one point and the protag had to stop them cause she was getting too into it. weyoun did a masterful job of not showing his disappointment.

in I Am the Vorta, keevan toys with the idea of ‘making it up’ to the protag by inviting her to what is surely going to be one very uncomfortable dinner for two. he knows he could make her squirm real bad & fuck w/ the whole stockholm syndrome thing she has going on. in the end he decides against it in favor of something else though.

favorite thing about them: i've written this 3 times!!!! BUT!!!! i love that at the age of FIFTEEN she'd already got the title cruelest konoichi. like. ilu queen. and she's so confident too, like she knows she could wreck anyone's shit, she goes up against MADARA without ever pausing. and i love that whilee on the battlefield she's cruel, as a civillian she's just...lowkey a bitch. like she's scary and people know to fear her but she doesnt actually...bully anyone besides shikamaru. she's also so ride or die for her brothers and i LOVE it.

least favorite thing about them: whatever that ooc mess was that was used to get her and shikamaru together.

favorite line: idk but when she tells madara "don't understimate me!" GO OFF QUEEN

brOTP: gaara and kankuro, 100%. the sand siblings are so fucking good. i could talk all day about them. in the leaf i think she vibes with ino, though she needs Breaks. she didn't like, Get choji at first but the more she got to know him she's like "oh i get it he's just Genuinely Good" and now he's her favorite. i also like to imagine she and karui bonded over not being from the leaf, and also having ino as their sister in law. that's a unique experience okay.

OTP: shikamaru!!!!!!!

nOTP: i dont really have any?? i just can't ship her with anyone but shikamaru, i think he's it for her. temari was never really one to be concerned over romance or anything, it's not something she cared about, and she kind of expected an arranged marriage so she was more focused on Not doing that. but then shikamaru happened and it was like. oh. she actually wouldn't mind spending the rest of her life with him. huh. gross.

random headcanon: i have a lot of Thoughts about temari as a mother. i think that she never planned on being one, just like how she never planned on falling in love. it wasn't opposition, just. her childhood was fucked up, she had no good parental role models, she was much more interested in being a konoichi. but then she and shikamaru got serious and shikamaru is the head of the nara clan and he needed an heir. she agreed to it, in a few years, but shikadai was an oops ! so anyway, temari hated being pregnant lmao which is why they only had shikadai. but once he was born temari is like "oh. i'll kill and die for this child." like shikadai wasn't Real to her until she held him (vs shikamaru, who's been obsessed with that child since temari first started showing). temari actually tried going back to work when shikadai was a year old but pretty quickly she realized "fuck this". temari likes working, a lot, but she also likes being needed and she just likes her kid! so she oversaw all his training from the time he was old enough. it was hard at first, because she's never babied him, but she knew that the training she recieved was uh, not acceptable, so she struggled with what pace was actually okay for his age. hinata and sakura actually helped a lot here- hinata also had Fucked Up training as a child and sakura trained with tsunade who is Insane so they were able to figure out what worked best for their children. GOD THIS GOT LONG. anyway. i love temari and shikadai thank u.

random headcanon: LET'S KEEP TALKING ABOUT SHIKADAI. so when shikamaru's dad dies he has a line about how he wasn't around when shikamaru was growing up, and shikamaru obviously doesn't resent him for that, but he does make a concious choice to Not do that. it'd be too easy to get wrapped up in his job, but he won't let himself. he makes sure to make time for shikadai. they play shogi together, and shikamaru is very involved in his training, and even when he's exhausted from work he'll listen to shikadai talk about his day and never show how tired he is. he loves his kid so much, temari makes fun of him for being soft. also when shikadai was a baby shikamaru was lowkey obsessed with him lmao. temari needed Breaks but shikamaru...never really did. even when he was crying he would just hold and bounce him until he calmeed down (also shikamaru was way better at calming shikadai down than temari lmao)

I only started saving tweets at the end of March 2009 when they started to become more band-related, so here’s a separate post of Ryan’s early content I just went to find now. I wasn’t sure where to put tweets that were done after midnight, so sometimes the date might be technically wrong... but everything’s basically in order!

“I’m sorry”, your voice echoed in Baekhyun’s mind as he drove. To nowhere, he never wants to get anywhere, just- he just felt like running away, so maybe he’d make up his mind about you, about himself. What kind of person he became, all of a sudden, for you. Not that he ever strived to be like that, he just couldn’t help himself.

Now, he has to make up his mind and if you’re not gonna let go of him. Maybe he has to do this himself. It’d be the best. When you leave for college, he’s gotta stay. He’ll take the old man Kim business and make the best out of it. You’re not part of the equation in this, you’ll get hurt- or worse. Baekhyun can’t afford having you hurt because of what he decided to be when you tried to make something better out of him.

When Baekhyun pulls over, he’s not quite sure where he is, but when he comes to it, he looks around and finds himself in his old neighborhood. Where he was raised, when Mr. Kim was just a nice single-man next door, Suho’s dad. Back then, he wasn’t wasn’t a complete self-centered jerk. They were friends. The six of them, Jongdae, Minseok, Suho, Yixing, Baekhyun himself and... Chanyeol too.

But- That’s when Chanyeol was his closest friend, even more than Jongdae. Back then, he wasn’t the worthless bastard who belonged to a family of gangster, people believed he could’ve done well. Baekhyun could handle anyone. There’s so many guys you could choose, Baekhyun would’ve accepted better - or, at least, he likes to think he would. Just not Chanyeol, it’s been enough to pretend Chanyeol’s nothing a classmate and now he has to see you with him, being happy as he wishes he could make you.

Baekhyun tried before, he tried convincing himself to stop this relationship or whatever anyone would call it. Whatever you call it. He sincerely thought it’d be better for you to find someone who could make you happy without having to walk hidden in shadows and corners here and there, but, he knows, he’s too selfish. Maybe as much as you’re being, maybe more because this isn’t him just accepting what you want, this is him not being able to say no because he just can’t let go.

The sound of the keys and the wooden door opening calls Baekhyun attention and he turns his head to see Chanyeol walking in the old house he moved from, the house the six boys use to cause trouble before being called for lunch or dinner, being called out to sit down and study first before playing outside. Chanyeol’s eyes find his, staring from inside the car, somehow and he stops right before going in the house.

Baekhyn can almost see the wheels turning in Chanyeol’s head, but he can’t get himself to do anything about it. He could always simply drive away. Finally, he sees Chanyeol sighing heavily and pulling the door closed.

‘Please, don’t.’ Baekhyun thinks to himself, feeling his body tensing, ‘Just pretend you didn’t see me.’ , Baekhyun pleads, hands clenching on the steering wheel, ‘Just go home and ignore me, Why are you such a-’

“What a dumb bastard!” Baekhyun grumply murmurs to himself as he sees Chanyeol approaching him directly.

Baekhyun sighs once again and forces himself off his Baby . Chanyeol’s still in his school uniform, hands stuck in the front pockets of his jacket, he looks nothing but what a high-achieving high schooler would look. ‘The bastard is even good looking and charming’, Baekhyun thinks to himself with a hidden laughter, ‘He suits her’, he adds bitterly to himself soon after.

“It’s been a while.” Chanyeol says awkwardly when he stops. Baekhyun hums and nods positively as he leans on his car.

Baekhyun sees Chanyeol gathering breath, as if he’d say something, but then he just exhales at once, looking away and hisses to himself.

“What?” Baekhyun asks, crooking his head to the side and Chanyeol looks back at him.

“Nothing” Chanyeol replies at first and there’s a pause and Baekhyun allows it because Chanyeol seems to have words stuck in his throat, whatever they are. He’d like to hear it, “Just-”

‘Ah~ There they are-’ Baekyun thinks to himself as Chanyeol starts.

“When-” Chanyeol exhales again in frustration and takes a step closer, hesitantly, “You know, when I got back and saw you in class I thought, ‘well, maybe we could be friends again’ . But, if I tried to get any closer you just disappeared, everyday. You just disappeared from the classroom.”

Baekhyun would keep this secret that’s now dear to him as much as it was back then. He disappeared to meet you, he was always so eager to embrace you. Still is.

“All you do is using Mr. Kim’s fame as a gangster to push people away?”

“This time it’s true, though” Baekhyun says simply.

“Oh, so- You couldn’t even say hello. Just once?”

“What for? Because we played together when we were kids?” Baekhyun scoffs, shaking his head, “All it’d do is earn you a bad reputation and side-glares for talking to me”, Baekhyun says calmly, “As soon as they heard we used to be close you’d go from top student to gangster minion like this! ” Baekhyun snaps his fingers.

“Oh, I see” Chanyeol laughs to himself, “And here I thought we could still be friends. I’m just that stupid”

“You are.”

Chanyeol hums in reply and takes another step closer and now they’re way too close, so Baekhyun chuckles.

“What’s wrong with the distance we had a moment ago.” Baekhyun mocks, “You miss me so much that you need to take a better look?” He says playfully, mannering his head as if to give Chanyeol a better angle to take a picture, “You’re talking to me now. Is that anything you’d like to say?”

“Yes” Chanyeol replies readily, “There were some things I wanted to tell you. I wanted us to talk about many things, but now- Now! There’s just one thing that I need to ask.”

“What is it?” Baekhyun asked even though he could tell his old friend’s eyes what would it be, so he ready himself to how the question would come along.

“Y/n” Chanyeol started, not knowing how else to do so and licks his lips, uncertain of how to go on, “About Y/n. Actually, this is backwards-”, Chanyeol says the second part more to himself than to Baekhyun and the later waits, “You made a mess in school today. I heard them saying you could get kicked out and we’re almost graduating. So why? Why did you do all of that for Y/n? What’s so wrong about Y/n and I being a couple? Why can’t it be true? Do you like her?”

The words just poured out of Chanyeol’s lips and by the end his eyes prickled with hidden tears, he just didn’t want to have this conversation in the first place. When someone rushed to him to say what was going on he rushed to see what really was it about, then he heard Baekhyun and the desperation, and anger in his friend’s voice pained him somehow in more than one way. He still can’t understand, he can’t grasp, but he knows he didn’t like the fact that Baekhyun just couldn’t like you as someone started gossiping.

Chanyeol’s last question lingers in the air, tasting bitter on his own tongue as he runs out of breath to speak anymore. Chanyeol likes you- a lot , it’s different than any other times he liked anyone else and he doesn’t want to face anyone who seems willing to have you too. He’s not sure if he’s a coward, maybe he’s unsure of himself. Should he tell you how much he likes you already, the two of you seemed to be moving slowly, you seem to enjoy doing so, but maybe he should pick up a certain pace. Baekhyun isn’t someone to just take things slow, that much Chanyeol’s certain.

Baekhyun stops himself from frowning or exposing how he can read Chanyeol’s thoughts in his expression. Chanyeol just doesn’t change, as he thought. Pulling himself away from the car, Baekhyun straightens his body only making all the more obvious how small he is compared to Chanyeol, thankfully he’s standing on a slightly higher side of the hill. Which is almost nothing, but at least something . Like what you give him.

Once again Baekhyun considers just saying it all. Taking you for himself and get this over with. He’d do whatever it takes to keep you safe, so what’s the matter. It’s just a matter of seconds when a movie goes before his eyes where he can take you with him and everything will work out like a miraculous magic trick. He can do anything as long as you’re there, so why not?

“Yes” Baekhyun replies and Chanyeol breathe is caught in his throat, “I like Y/n”, Baekhyun adds, watching Chanyeol hiccups and step back, much to his pleasure.

Should he say it all now, then. When Chanyeol looks like lost, hurt puppy, eyes wandering everywhere but him.

“I think I should have her instead of you” Baekhyun says boldly, watching Chanyeol look at him with wide eyes, “I got a bastard in my family instead of you. Mr. Kim married my mom instead of yours, so… I got the weak end of the rope on that, so- Just think of Y/n as compensation.” Bekhyun tries sounding as emotionless as he can while Chanyeol watches him in disbelief, “She’ll be the good thing you own me. We’ll be even then”

“Baekhyun, you-” Chanyeol is cut by his own breathless state and as soon as he recoverse he chuckles pathetically, “Who do you think you are to demand to have a person as compensation? You’re just some high schooler! Are you crazy?”

“Some high-schooler” Baekhyun mocks with a sick grin prying his lips, before laughing loudly to himself. Chanyeol looks around, startled and sees a few lights in the neighborhood light up.

“Are you crazy? It’s late! You're gonna wake up the whole neighborhood.”

“Why? Afraid to be seen with a gangster?”Baekhyun asks, “Look closely, Yeol! At us! You and me.” Baekhyun mentions to Chanyeol and then his own self, pulling on Chanyeol’s uniform, before tugging on his long coat, the clothes fit him, but they are way too unfitting for a kid his age and Baekhyun knows it well, “ You’re the high-schooler here. I’m a real gangster. Mr. Kim- Ah, no! Dad is giving me a lot of confidence lately, there’s nothing I can’t do~”

“So?” Chanyeol asks, trying to look at Baekhyun’s eyes, “You wanna treat Y/n like Mr. Kim treats the people he used to play around with before discarding like trash? Is that it?”

“I told you, didn’t I?” Baekhyun insists, “I like Y/n.” He says more clearly this time, “If you don’t have the confidence, then just let me have what I deserve.”

Baekhyun pulled the car’s door open and hopped inside. He couldn’t say it afterall, that’s all Baekhyun could think as he watched Chanyeol become smaller as he drove away. It’s better this way, he thinks. Chanyeol watched him drive by with a heavy heart. If only the year just ended and you and him could take off to college right away. Away from Baekhyun.
