Martin: "Describe your character's biggest flaw." I guess my character's biggest flaw would be a lack of patience and his explosive temper. It's got better actually. It's got better as the kids have got older. Because the kids are now, what, 48? Daisy: (laughs) We're 632, aren't we? Martin: I'm basically fucking Yoda. (pause) I'm not fucking Yoda. Daisy: No, please don't do that. Martin: I could never get that small.

relistening to tma and losing my mind more with each episode. anyways. today we're talking about how there are three characters in the show who are meant to be/groomed to be "the chosen one" for some specific purpose (agnes for the lightless flame, gerry to carry on some esoteric bloodline, jon for the watcher's crown/the web's escape plan) and all three of them have that running theme of being completely powerless in every aspect of their lives despite being made to be something powerful. we never get agnes' own perspective on her own life, gerry dies and is kept in limbo for *years*, and jon is marked to be the antichrist from age 8, like all of them were used as tools rather than people and if you couple that with all three at some point expressing that their fantasy is to live a normal life and be a normal person but they were trapped by divinity......fucked up if true

Favorite thing about Martin Blackwood is even though he is soooo fucking scared all the time constantly the second someone threatens him (even if they make good on said threats) he's just like

Elias 👁️: So what are your guys job qualifications again?

Sasha: Hacking. Mostly to get personal information.

Jon: What?

Tim:Seducing cops. Also explosives.

Jon: I don't think that it's the type of quali-

Martin: Stabbing people! Oh and arson.

Jon: Did you say stabbing people??

Elias👁️: Perfect. What about you, Jonathan?

Jon: *defeated* Invading private property.

MMMMMMMMM GOOD THINGS ARE BEING SAID.

Martin consistently stutters, consistently allows himself to build up to a point where his frustrations have nowhere to go other than an abrupt spurt of anger that can almost seem out of character to him in the beginning but are, in fact, intrinsically linked to who he is as a person. He sidesteps his own comfort in favour of others' and expresses his feelings in providing for those he cares about. Simple gestures, like a cup of tea. And later (avoiding spoilers) Bigger Gestures.

Martin has convinced himself he does not matter and attempts to make himself small as a result. Be kind, be gentle and offer comfort to those around him in an attempt to convince them to let him stay. Historically he's been an emotional punching bag for others. His mother, then Jon- you can assume later Lukas too (though in a very different manner).

It's not until much later he starts expressing himself in more honest ways (i.e. post Lonely). He admits his faults and asks for things. Allows his anger and frustration to bubble up organically. Isn't as afraid to express these things as now he's confidant he won't be left in the dirt as a result of taking up space. "I am Martin Blackwood and I am not lonely anymore."

English tea is the most inoffensive thing to offer someone as a source of comfort. The smallest and most effective way to provide in a workspace that he has very little idea to what he's doing in thanks to fudging the records to get in in the first place. The mugs may as well have "Please keep me, I'm helping, see?" written on them. So yes. Yes and Thank you.
