The idea that a single woman might think of herself as the equal to a man was derided by the late nineteenth-century radical thinker and poet Edward Carpenter, who said in 1897 that spinster feminists were 'out of line . . . Such women do not altogether represent their sex; some are rather mannish in temperament; some are "homogenic", that is inclined to attachments to their own sex rather than the opposite sex; such women are ultra-rationalising and brain-cultured; to many, children are more or less a bore; to others, man's sex-passion is a mere impertinence, which they do not understand, and whose place they consequently misjudge.'

do you ever think about how polnareff lost his mom young and canonically admits that he has no family back in france, his memory version of sherry says that he'd have done anything for her, one of his prominent memories is buying her an umbrella, and his memory version brings up his regret about one time he flipped at her when they were kids.

and how he initially takes avdol having concern for him as patronizing and how he is very insistent that he's been "alone from the start" and his admittedly extremely inconvenient habit of going off by himself by reflex becomes minimally less funny

(in Loki telling self "make your own post"): weird to me how there always seem to be people on this website ready to come out of the woodwork and insist that a bunch of ambiguous things are always and only about antisemitism.

Yes, blood libel is absolutely a thing - but, "they [steal, hurt and/or eat] babies and worship Satan!" is also to pre/early modern Europe what "groomer/pedo" is to the internet today. They said it about Jewish people because they were antisemitic and this was what you said/believed about people that you hated. They also said it about Rromani people, and Catholics, and widows disliked by their local community, and weirdos who might have been some kind of neurodivergent, and queer people, and poor people! Hell, in the 90s, American Evangelicals were saying it about atheists and people who wanted to teach religion in schools. "They are going to both hurt and in some sense steal away our children" is what people are saying about trans people right the fuck now.

I don't really know what (if any) goal is being served or attempted by all this pattern-matching.

#additionally: long pointed noses and protruding chins are notably common in at least one ethnic group besides Jewish people:#white europeans!#(ever heard of a Roman Nose?)#i think it probable that at least some depictions of witches or vampires that people have pattern-matched to antisemitic caricature #are simply someone only/primarily familiar with european features trying to draw an ugly mannish old woman #or a gaunt old eastern European man

Honestly sooo enamored of the idea that Arwen has a complicated relationship with Luthien's memory. Obviously she recognizes comparisons between them are meant to be a compliment, and Luthien is her own foremother and she is certainly admirable, but at the same time, Arwen knows she's not Luthien. She doesn't have Luthien's raw power or her potentially thousands of years of experience or even her determination and fortitude--maybe not even her courage. Arwen is simply not Luthien, and she knows quite young that she never will be. She makes the choice of Luthien and she does what she can to aid Aragorn, but she's not bringing down towers or putting Sauron to sleep or drawing Aragorn back from the jaws of death. She can't do these things. Nevertheless, she finds her happiness and fights for it, and what's more in keeping with Luthien's memory than that?
