LGBTQIA+ characters in DC Comics
These are characters who have first appeared or been revealed as LGBTQIA+ over the last year, or whom I’ve recently learned about or whom I hadn’t mentioned in previous posts of this type (though I may have featured them on my old blog). As usual, this list is highly arbitrary and incomplete.
(Yeah, I know DC Comics isn’t the only game in town, but for the time being it’s the only one I regularly read, so…)
Green Lantern (Alan Scott) [he/him; gay]
Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel) [she/her; bi] & Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley) [she/her; bi]
Holly Robinson [she/her; lesbian]
Io [she/her; probably lesbian or bi]
Jericho (Joseph “Joey” Wilson) [he/him; bi]
John Constantine [he/him; bi]
Maggie Sawyer [she/her; lesbian]
the Pied Piper (Hartley Rathaway) [he/him; gay]
Continuing the tradition from my old blog (which has been unceremoniously deleted by tumblr without much of an explanation why) I’m doing daily posts during June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride by showcasing openly LGBTQIA+ celebrities and various content about or created by LGBTQIA+ people such as music videos, characters on TV shows, movie trailers, …

Pretty cool answers got some more if that’s ok?
1: what is something the duo believes in? Like Bigfoot, mothman, etc…
2: what’s their opinion on cops in general?
3: you mention in a earlier post that Chris accidentally brushed his teeth with Jake’s toothbrush, was there any other gross moments the duo received?
4: you might’ve answer this before I think but what’s something that makes the duo really angry like super-saiyan angry?
5: what bets does the duo regular make? Like sees who’s faster for example?
6: what does the duo like to do with those respective girlfriends? Like hand holding, kisses on the cheek, etc
1) Well given that well….its the DCU where Greek pantheon gods, biblical demons, descendents of the Norse pantheon (New Genesis and Apokolips) and many others are all legit characters, it’s likely those cryptids indeed do exist anyways. Mainly the Duo though would give some attention in saying the Loch Ness Monster and the Congo’s Mokele Mbembe are real. Unlike in our reality, they have some actual evidence
2) Whilr they certainly have very good allies in Dan Turpin, Maggie Sawyer and especially Amy Rohrbach (in addition it of course Jim Gordon, Renee Montoya and even Harvey Bullock), Chris and Jake are overall more cautious around police officers in general and prefer not to overly rely on them as they both are aware of the systemic issues and structural problems many police departments have, the ones that we in the real world would acknowledge. This is especially true for Bludhaven as their police department is stated in being more corrupt than even Gotham’s.
3) Well, there only two incidents they are willing to talk about including the time Jake was dared by one of his classmates to not shower for a few days, hoping to break a record from an urban legend at their school. While he was able to beat said record by one messily minute, by the end of it he’d smelled and I quote from Chris “like if a foot and Brussels sprouts had a baby….who went Number 2 on their diaper.” Once Jake finally beat said record, Mar’i and Chris immediately gathered up some clean clothes, dragged Jake immediately straight to the bathroom and shut the door behind them so he can finally shower.
The other time would be when Chris and Jake love did some volunteer work at the local zoo, especially when it came time for cleaning some of the animal enclosures. Most difficult of all being the chimpanzees given their usual methods of warding off intruders. One of their ‘items’ they threw literally hit a fan (thankfully an air conditioner fan not a person) from across their habitat.
4) Easily hurting their loved ones and best friends like each others real badly and especially right in front of their eyes while gloating/laughing about it. During the brutal duel and beat down against Victor Zsasz on Jake, had he not been restrained by a power dampening anklet with traces of kryptonite in it, Chris for sure would’ve gone absolutely ballistic on the deranged criminal and rightfully so.
Also hurting innocents just to spite them or being careless is another way to get the two real ticked off. Even Chris and Jake have shown amazement on their ability to hold back during the few times Mongul nearly annihilated large swathes of Bludhaven and Metropolis, merely pounding him down rather than outright incinerating him.
5) Along with who can fly and/or run the fastest, they also made bets on Who can Eat Raw Onions without Crying (Chris won that one), Who’s the better poem writer (Jake), Who Can Curl Their Tongue (Jake again), Who can Annoy Hawkman first (Chris) and Who Can handle Spicy Hot Wings (like we’re taking spices including Habenero and Ghost Chili Peppers) with their Powers Shut Off and Without Milk (a Tie since they both made it two Twenty Wings before rushing for the Gallons)
6) Hand Holding, Quick Cheek Kisses, Sitting Close to each other when taking a seat, Paying for Lunches (Chris and Thara often make reservations at a local Big Belly Burger in Metropolis while conversely Jake and Meredith are regulars at a Bomp N Stomp in Bludhaven), Going to the Movies together (Especially Kaiju movies for Meredith of course), and helping each other out with their homework at their nearby libraries; all these are common place for the Duo regarding Thara and Meredith respectively
Thanks for the asks and your compliments @pin-crusher2000 . It’s very appreciated :-D

In light of My Adventures With Superman's existence, I should probably mention (and not for the first time) that Superman's extended supporting cast has never been done any justice in adaptations and really would benefit from a Spectacular Spider-Man-esque show that really dives in to some of the more obscure characters from the comics.
I'm talking the extended Daily Planet cast - Steve Lombard, Ron Troupe, a comics-accurate Cat Grant; Bibbo Bibbowski; Pete Ross and Lana Lang; Sam, Ella, and Lucy Lane; John Henry and Natasha Irons; Bill Henderson, Dan Turpin, and Maggie Sawyer from the MPD; Morgan Edge; etc.
Really build up Metropolis and show the strength of Clark's supporting characters on a level that's on par with the great supporting casts in comics.
And do the same with his rogues gallery! Luthor, Zod, Bizarro, and Doomsday are great, but what about Hellgrammite? Kurt Busiek's rework of Prankster as a professional distraction is fantastic, take from that a little. Or how about Riot - he's a visually impressive villain with a cool look. And of course, Titano. Who can resist a giant gorilla with Kryptonite vision?
Point is, there is plenty in the Superman mythos that hasn't even really been touched in an adaptation sense, and MAWS likely isn't going to be the show to do it due to its genre and target audience. And that makes me sad.

Hey, got any tips/starting points for people who want to get into the DC comics with Maggie? Happy pride btw!
Hello Anon! Happy Pride to you as well! This is the first time anyone has asked me about comics, so I'm very excited to answer this!
So bear with me because this is a long answer, and I'm going to start by saying that the Maggie in the comics and the Maggie in the Supergirl TV Show are different characters. And while they have similar characteristics and values, they also have a lot of differences. So if you are looking for comics that deal with the familiar Maggie from the TV series, you will be disappointed because there are none. (But there is a lot of fanfiction of the TV Show Maggie, which helps with that disappointment, I've found. *wink*)
But if you can put aside the TV show version and want to understand where the character of Maggie Sawyer comes from, then there are several places that you can start.
The first one is at the very beginning. Which is Superman Vol 2 #4 (1987), where Maggie was first introduced. She was a frequent reoccurring character in the Superman series and was his primary police contact for a while. Her back story is explained chiefly during her Superman run, including her coming out story.
Maggie also became the main character in a four-issue series called Metropolis SCU, which won a GLAAD award in 1997. And then she was the main character in another four-part series called: MAGGIE SAWYER, SPECIAL CRIMES UNIT. This series was the first time a major comic book publisher (DC Comics) had a heroine that was an out lesbian. (A fact I didn't know until I was researching this answer... I thought Kate Kane or Renee Montoya held that title, oops.)
Then, in the mid-2000s, Maggie was transferred to Gotham and became a significant character in the Gotham Central series, along with Renee Montoya. And she is featured in a few other significant Batman storylines, such as Batman: No Man's Land, Infinite Crisis, and 52.
This brings me to option two; you can skip everything I mentioned before and start with Detective Comics #856 (part of the Batwoman Origin Comic Elegy), where Maggie meets Kate Kane. Maggie then becomes a significant part of 2011 The New 52 Batwoman Series. This is where I first met the character and fell in love with her. There is enough of her backstory here explaining that I felt safe understanding who she was. I enjoyed her story with Kate, even if the ending of that particular run is a bit controversial (but that's a topic for another day.)
The last option I give you is to start with DC's Bombshells, a four-volume series, and Bombshells United, a 3 volume series, which is an alternate reality where female superheroes guard the homefront during WWII. Not only is Maggie a character, but all of your favorite DC female characters are there, and this comic is very queer and features a host of Sapphic love between various heroes. (I highly recommend this series in general, because it's so good. )
In conclusion, I sincerely hope that this list helps you find a starting point that helps you dive deeper into the character of Maggie Sawyer. Feel free to message me back and let me know what you think! Happy Reading! :)
Also, here are a few articles(which do contain spoilers) that I used as references in writing this list: https://www.dc.com/blog/2022/06/24/sapphic-planet-the-many-loves-of-d-cs-bombshells

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes-Chapter 26
Fandom: Supergirl
Characters: Kara Danvers, Clark Kent, Samantha Arias, Lena Luthor, Lillian Luthor, Ruby Arias, Oliver Queen, John Stewart, Diana Prince, Bruce Wayne, Barry Allen, J'onn J'onnz, Alfred Pennyworth, Lois Lane, Cat Grant, Lucy Lane, Damian Wayne, Felicity Smoak, Streaky the Supercat, Martha Kent, Selina Kyle, Talia Al Ghul, Lucius Fox, Maggie Sawyer, Alex Danvers, Jason Todd, Otis Graves, Lex Luthor
Summary: What if superheroes had to pay a property damage tax every time they had a fight in the city?
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10, Chapter 11, Chapter 12, Chapter 13, Chapter 14, Chapter 15, Chapter 16, Chapter 17, Chapter 18, Chapter 19, Chapter 20, Chapter 21, Chapter 22, Chapter 23, Chapter 24, Chapter 25
Lena cuddled up next to Kara on the living room couch. After dinner, Eliza and Alex were the first to leave since Alex was feeling the jet lag hard and wanted to get some sleep. Sam left shortly after them with Ruby opting to stay the night for a sleepover with her grandmother. She was currently changing into pajamas before they sat down to watch a movie. Kara and Lena were going to head out after Sam, but Lillian and Martha wanted to talk to them before leaving. Lena was curious about what it is since neither of the women gave a hint of what they wanted to talk to them separately about during dinner. Before Lena drifted more in her thoughts, Martha and Lillian joined them in the living room with Martha carrying tea and cookies with her.
Kara smiled and said, “You didn’t have to make anything extra for us tonight.”
Martha chuckled and said, “I know dear. I just thought that having these things here would make the conversation go a little more smoother.”
That comment piqued Lena’s interest.
Lena stared at Martha and Lillian quizzically and asked, “Why would you say that?”
Martha and Lillian looked at each other hesitantly before Lillian asked, “Remember when I told you that I am sick of Lex having a chokehold on our collective families?”
Lena narrowed her eyes, frowned and said, “Yes…”
“Well, Martha and I got tired of being bystanders and decided to do some investigating of our own to get Lex out of all of our lives for good and help Clark.”
Lena stared at her mom baffled. Her mom briefly mentioned wanting to get Lex out of their lives but didn’t know she had already tried to do something about it. Lena looked over at Kara who seemed equally as baffled by the situation.
Martha chuckled at their collective shock and said, “I take it by the silence that we took you off guard.”
Kara rubbed the back of her head and said, “I wouldn’t necessarily say off guard.”
Lena looked up hesitantly and said, “I just think we are kind of concerned. Lex only cares about himself. What if he picks up on what you are doing and decides to attack you or worse.”
Lillian grabbed Lena’s hand and rubbed soothing circles around it.
“We took precautions. Mostly, it was a fact-finding mission. Nothing too dangerous at all.”
Kara looked up intrigued and asked, “Were you able to find anything?”
Lillian nodded and said, “Leviathan used to help Lex with funding his different ventures and also providing security. However, he did something to piss them off and they cut ties. Due to that, it allowed me a brief window to get information out of Luthor Corp.” Lillian went to her desk in the living room and pulled out two folders. She went to hand them to Lena and Kara. “Two purchases stood out: Anders & Anders, and Grover & Sons.  Grover & Sons sells a variety of drinks ranging from water, wine, energy drinks, soda, juices, and protein shakes. Anders & Anders deal with everything in regards to a child’s development up until the age of five. They advertise that their food and educational tools enhance a child’s performance.”
Lena frowned and said, “Hmmm….”
Kara looked at Lena frowning and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Lena sighed, looked back at Kara thoughtfully and said, “Lex has always been about using tech to make him the ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in the hearts of everyone. These two purchases don’t seem in touch with his goal at least on a surface level.”
Kara raised an eyebrow and asked, “So you think there is more to these purchases than just them being random?”
Lena nodded and said, “Yes. I hate to admit this but Lex has always been a meticulous planner. He never purchased something without it having a purpose that serves him. If he purchased those companies that means they had something he greatly valued.”
Martha nodded and said, “That is what your mother and I thought which is why we met with Amanda Waller earlier today.”
Lena turned to her mother while raising an eyebrow and said, “I thought you and Amanda had a falling out years ago especially after she joined forces with Lex. What makes you think she wouldn’t just expose you to Lex.”
Lillian smirked and said, “Amanda works with Leviathan. She is more loyal to them instead of Lex especially since they said that they would go after anyone that provides them assistance.”
Kara looked up thoughtfully and said, “I really want to know what he did to piss them off.”
“If I had to take a guess, it is Lex’s anti-alien stance that he is running on in the Senate. Leviathan has been supporting pro-alien candidates which is a 180 from what they have done in the past.”
Lena raised an eyebrow and said, “That is curious that they made such a drastic change. I wonder if they have someone new in charge.”
Martha shrugged her shoulder and said, “Whatever the reason, it is working in our favor. Amanda has given us a lead with Anders & Anders that we will be following up on in two weeks.”
Kara frowned and asked, “Why the long wait?”
Lillian said, “Amanda is given us a window of time to get the information we need without Lex noticing what we are doing. Until we have even a hint of what he is up to, I would rather avoid a head on approach.”
Lena nodded and said, “I agree subtlety would be better. Is there anything we can do to help?”
Lillian smiled and said, “Actually yes. We still haven’t figured out why Lex wanted Grover & Sons. The little information that I was able to get from Luthor Corp is that they are trying to alter some of the drinks Grover & Sons produced. The folders have copies of their results but I don’t understand what any of them mean. I was wondering if you could analyze the data and see if it makes since to you.”
Lena smiled and said, “That is something I definitely can do.”
Lillian let out a sigh and said, “Now to the much harder ask.”
Lena frowned and asked, “What does that mean?”
Martha rubbed the back of her neck and said, “Amanda talked about how Lex has done a nuclear option: done something to a loved one of Clark. We haven’t noticed anything odd so we wanted to rule out the possibility that something wasn’t done to our bodies without us knowing.”
Lillian nodded and said, “We think it is best that everyone gets tested: Sam, Ruby, Kara, Lena, Martha, and myself. Part of me is hoping that Amanda is over-exaggerating or even bluffing, but I rather be safe than sorry.”
Lena leaned back and sighed. She wished that she could say that Lex wouldn’t do something that low, but she couldn’t. This was something that was right in his wheelhouse.
Lena said, “I agree. I can have everyone come to the hospital to be tested tomorrow.”
Martha frowned and said, “That is wonderful, but we do have one small problem.”
Kara frowned and asked, “What problem?”
Martha sighed and said, “Clark. He should be tested too. However, you know his stance on hospitals and needles and that was before he started to act beyond unusual. I don’t see getting him to agree to this.”
Kara looked up thoughtfully and said, “I think I know someone in the League who can provide some assistance.”
Martha smiled and said, “That is wonderful. Do you think they would be able to help as soon as possible?”
Kara nodded and said, “I am supposed to see this individual tomorrow for something else. I don’t see them saying no to the request in particular.”
Before Kara could say anything else, Ruby rushed in with her pajamas on and said, “Grandma, I found a movie we can watch on Netflix: Inside Out. Can we watch it now?”
Lillian smiled and said, “Sure dear. Why don’t you turn on the movie on in the TV here and then we can start watching. I already have the tea and cookies ready.”
Ruby sprinted to the TV while shouting, “Yay!”
Lillian chuckled while she turned to Kara and Lena and said, “Would you guys like to stay for the movie too?”
Ruby turned around with pouty lips and round eyes and asked, “Can you stay Auntie Lena and Kara? It would be even better having you here to watch.”
Lena sighed while chuckling and said, “You know I can’t say no to that face.” Lena turned to Kara, gave her a soft smile, and said, “If you need to leave that is fine, although I hope you will stay.”
Kara beamed and said, “Of course I’ll stay. I enjoy getting to spend extra time you you guys.” Kara leaned into Lena closer and whispered in her ear, “Especially you my love.”
Lena blushed while cuddling into Kara more and said, “You always know what the right thing to say.”
Kara leaned back with Lena on the couch as they got ready to watch the movie.
As Kara watched the movie, she thought about her new task of getting Clark tested. Kara wasn’t entirely honest about who she could ask to help with Clark. There were technically four people that she could ask. Most were magic users which Clark would hate her even more given his serious distrust for magic. It just left one person that she could ask. Kara sighed. She knew the she and the person in question on going to have their work cut off for them.
I smell a ruse coming on.

C, S and U
C. A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can’t.
Oh, man. I don't even know. The one that comes to mind for me is Kate Kane/Maggie Sawyer. (cue comics rant.) During 52, Greg Rucka spent so much time building the relationship of Kate and Renee. It was deep and complex, it was soulmates-who-met-at-the-wrong-time, it was I-love-you-even-when-you're-bad-for-me. They became vigilantes parallel to each other. I loved their love so much I would claw at my face in delight each week.
Then Greg Rucka left, and the New 52 happened. Renee's Question persona was retconned. She was barely mentioned for ages. And JHWIII and Blackman wrote the Batwoman series, and. IDK. Looked around for other lesbian characters and landed on Maggie because she was the only one? Yeah, no. Apparently, I still have strong feelings about this one! ^^;
S. What’s a headcanon you have?
I don't really know if I have any specific headcanons? I guess my biggest one is that if Len survived the explosion at the Oculus, he's a meta. You survive an explosion from a device that controlled time while outside of time? You're a meta now. I don't make the rules.
My other big one is that Cisco and Lisa are endgame. Don't care what the show decided.
U. What are your favorite male/female ships?
Ooh, interesting. Well, my ride or die is Cheri Majors/Citizen Pain from the comic series Violent Messiahs. Messed up traumatized hero-and-villain? Love at first sight? YES.
My other favorite from the top of my head is Jonothan Starsmore (Chamber) and Paige Guthrie (Husk) from Generation X. I will be forever bitter that they ended up not really being a thing.
Those two are some old school comics references. LOL
I do also really, really like Cisco/Lisa and Iris/Eddie. They were both really adorable, and I'm sad we didn't get more content. (Eddie should've lived past S1, imo.)
That was a lot of fun! Thanks for asking! It was a nice break from the kiss prompts I'm writing. <3

“If the producers of Supergirl wanted a Latina woman to play Maggie Sawyer, why not cast one? How many people know Meagan Good is part Puerto Rican? Or that Harry Shum Jr. She’s even gone on record stating how Hollywood wants their Latinas to look Italian,” she wrote. “Gina Torres is a proud Afro-Cuban American woman who, as far as I know, never gotten a chance to play a Latina woman on screen. This can, and has, further contributed to the alienation of Afro and Indigenous Latinxs within our community.” “It also, I personally feel, encourages some individuals within the Latinx community to reject their indigenous or black ancestry in favor of whiteness. “By ignoring those parts of our community, media creates a distorted image of our culture, which allows the continued whitewashing of our community, ignorance regarding our identities, and contributes to a lack of empathy of our struggles,” she wrote. It’s important that media reflects the actual reality of the Latinx community, which includes a wide range of races, and even religious identities.” I have to– otherwise I contribute to the continued problems of colorism in both the Latinx community and within a larger worldwide context,” wrote Desiree Rodriguez, Editorial Assistant for Lion Forge sci-fi comic book Catalyst Prime and writer for Women on Comics and The Nerds of Color, in an email interview.”By favoring women who look like me, you erase the multitude of men, women, and non-binary Latinx individuals who don’t look like me. “I understand my privilege as a light-skinned afro-Boricua woman. Even though it’s women of color, it’s much more valuable in media to be light skinned than dark skinned.” I really feel like that’s an issue that translates to the screen as well. I think that’s…something that’s very important,” said Kimberly Hoyos, filmmaker and creator of The Light Leaks, a website designed to support, educate and empower female and gender non-conforming filmmakers. “Even in my Latino community, there’s a weird emphasis on how dark you are or how light you are or where you’re from. “…here’s obvious merit in bringing in new talent because that director could be the next person who discovers the next actor. All of them sounded off on the colorism and anti-blackness that affects Latinx who don’t look like, as Young Hollywood hinted at in his own words to Amara, the stereotypical “Latinx” person. Last year, I interviewed several Latinx content creators for my longform piece on what it’s like being Latinx in Hollywood. If you needed an example of one of the biggest issues facing Afro-Latinx, look no further than Young Hollywood’s interaction with Amara. Young Hollywood needs to check himself, because he’s a prime example of anti-blackness in the Latinx community. I’m actually not sure what I would have done, but it would definitely be something people wouldn’t expect from someone as quiet-natured as me.Ĥ. “ NUTELLA QUEEN”? Amara played this exchange much cooler than I think I would have. First, it’s the overt colorism and anti-blackness he embodies with comments about not being glamorous with an afro, mocking the Black Power fist, and calling Amara “Afro-Latina Queen” and “Nutella Queen,” not to mention questioning the validity of the Afro-Latina identity.ģ. How disrespectful and racist can he be? It’s as if he went out of his way to be disrespectful. Basically, what I’m saying is that Young Hollywood doesn’t seem as popular as he wants everyone to believe.Ģ. I feel like if Young Hollywood were really important in the music industry, I’d certainly know more about him than his tragic presentation of himself on Love and Hip Hop Miami. WHO is Young Hollywood? Not to play that “I don’t know her” game, but I don’t know who this is, and I know a lot about pop culture. It's sad that people actually think like this. In this clip, Dominican singer Amara La Negra face intense colorism and racism from producer Young Hollywood. I’m not a watcher of any of the Love and Hip Hop franchise, but I had to take a moment out of my day to write about the controversy that flared up during the first episode of Love and Hip Hop Miami.
