i had originally planned to make a year-end post for all my lovely friends/mutuals which then got dragged into the first week of 2023 on my bday ;;;;; but thank you so much to all the lovely people that have followed this quaint little blog of mine and supported my content throughout my time here on tumblr! i can’t believe it’ll be a whole 1460 days since i made this account later this year... feels like just yesterday i signed up and logged in for the first time ever hehe

it always brings a smile to my face seeing each and every single silly, cute, sweet, supportive tag under any of my gifs, graphics, fanart etc.! i really cannot emphasize enough how wonderful it is to see people like my work enough to reblog it, take time out of their day to gush about it in the tags or send me the occasional ask/dm complimenting any aspect of it (´,,•ω•,,)♡ i truly appreciate all of you.

with the new year finally here and all, i’m sure a lot of people have resolutions and expectations set for the next 365 days so just remember to take it easy⏤start small and that’ll eventually lead you to kick bigger goals out there! you’ll see that every micro-habit has a monumentous impact when you look back on your progress, so read even one paragraph daily or go to sleep 15 mins earlier than you usually would. after all, buildings don’t just appear out of nowhere, you have to stack each brick one by one c: just make sure to not overexert yourself!

Jeongin was quite the gentle child.

There was a gentle warmth about him that was incomparable to any other entity, and a strange cheer that seemed to magically infect those who knew the boy.

Everything he held worked wonders, right from the broken frothing machine from his part-time job at the neighbourhood café to the rusted knife that he now held in his skilled hands, their action devoid of even an ounce of gentleness.

"Bastard's like you," Jeongin whispered, punctuating each word with a stab on the screaming man's chest. "Do not deserve to live."

"Please," the man spluttered, hands too weak to even resist the continuous stabbing. "Please…..save me…..monster.….this monster…..I'll die-"

"You killed your wife."

Stab.

"Someone's mother."

Stab.

"You killed a mother, you fucking monster."

The man let out a guttural scream and Jeongin's vision was blurred by a flood of memories, images that he couldn't make out and screams that he could not recognize. The man's torso twitched twice before life deserted him, and the blood-drenched knife slipped from Jeongin's sweaty fingers onto the rough, dust-strewn pavement.

Blood.

All blood.

The same blood that refused to leave his clothes even after he scrubbed them with all his might.

The same blood that he washed off his hands on certain days, the fluid mixed with dirt, sweat and his own tears that he usually failed to control.

The same blood that had covered his mother's pretty face and had soaked through her favourite yellow dress, all courtesy of her husband.

The same blood that twelve year old Jeongin had licked off his lips after strangling his father, the monster that had killed his wife and made his son a murderer.

The very same blood that Jeongin despised, yet could never get rid of.

The blood that was not his.

Jeongin felt a small hand tug at his own, and the face of a young child slowly came into focus, the boy's eyes rimmed red and cheeks wet with helpless tears.

"Is father dead?" the child croaked, his tiny hands reaching out to brush the tears that slowly dripped down Jeongin's face.

Care. Maybe this was what it felt like.

"Father did this to my mummy too. I don't like him."

"Do you like me?" Jeongin stroked the boy's head gently, fresh tears blurring his vision.

"I killed your father."

I am a monster. A murderer. A psychopath.

"I like you," the child smiled, the same smile that Jeongin had adorned nine years ago, when the police had taken him for investigation. "Father killed mummy. You saved me."

The child draped his arms around Jeongin's waist, hugging him with a love that Jeongin had never expected to experience again, with a love that had been wrenched away from his life years ago.

He kissed the child's forehead, and watched him walk away towards his house, which still had a light flickering in one of its rooms.

But Jeongin here, had no home to go back to.

He spared a last glance at the man's mangled torso, and started running. He had always been fast on his feet, a trait that he had taken after his beloved mother.

His mother, who was now just a mere memory.

His lungs burned with exhaustion, and with every painful intake of breath, he was reminded of the people whom he had killed, or rather, remembered killing.

Monster.

I am a fucking monster.

A cry ripped from his throat, gentle yet utterly painful. His legs collapsed with exhaustion and he staggered over to the side of a weirdly familiar street, a sharp pain splitting his head open.

Jeongin looked down at his battered watch, the only christmas gift that his mother had been able to buy him.

03:25 a.m.

"One more late night shift and I'll give up," you fumed, hitching your coat closer to your shivering body. "Isn't this — damn it, what was it called — the witching hour right now? What if I get possessed by some-"

A faintly audible scream rang throughout the neighbourhood, and you halted to a stop. You could make out the infamous 'Levanter' café at a distance, its flashy storefront signage illuminating the entire neighbourhood. Fear descended over you, and you swiftly made your way towards the café, the several pieces of advice that you had read in your law books fuzzing up your head.

Call the police if you note suspicious activity.

Use that damned peppermint spray if you are in danger.

One scream and everyone shall know.

You looked around one last time, and quickly walked over to the waiting area of the café, which mainly consisted of chairs and benches for the times when the shop was overcrowded.

A strong breeze had you shivering again, but this time, you were not sure if it was because of the chill that was slowly seeping in through your clothes or something else.

Because right before you, on one of the benches, was a figure trembling and shaking from what you knew very well to not be cold.

Shit.

Should I call an ambulance?

What if he attacks me?

What if he is a ghost?

Fuck, Y/N, what have you gotten yourself into?

You gingerly took the seat right beside the trembling figure, and with all the courage that you could muster, stroked the figure's head.

The figure bolted up immediately, slender fingers wrapping around your wrist in swift defence. It is a boy, you registered and while your first thought should have been something about how handsome he was, you could not help but focus on how the boy was entirely and totally, covered in blood.

"Who….who….Y/N?"

Jeongin could recognize you anywhere, your presence a warm radiation of love that always melted his heart and touched his soul. You were always the first one to enter the store during his morning shift, and somehow, always ended up sitting next to him in all of your shared classes.

Coincidence?

Maybe not.

"You are Yang Jeongin, aren't you? The infamous barista known for his beautiful smile?"

Jeongin found himself breaking into a grin, a grin that he did not deserve, a grin that he did not own. The world seemed to brighten up the moment you blushed, and Jeongin, to his immense surprise, found himself wanting more of that beautiful expression.

Were these his killer instincts kicking in?

"Are you crying?" You asked, gently draping your coat over his shivering figure, blissfully unaware of how the cold was biting your skin and making your delicate figure shiver too.

Jeongin shook his head, an unfaithful hiccup slipping past his lips immediately after the refusal. You smiled, bringing your face closer to his and wiping the fresh stream of tears that flowed down his cheeks.

He smelled of blood and detergent, you noted, almost as if he frequently overwashed his clothes. His eyes were beautiful, but what drew you in was the immense vulnerability they carried and the sheer strength that they possessed.

You felt the urgent need to hold him impossibly closer, until his pain numbed and heart healed.

Good Lord, what the fuck am I even doing?

Am I that smitten? This guy could literally be a thief, or a kidnapper, or hell, he could even be a serial killer!

Shit Y/N, you are really dumb.

Jeongin could almost see the wheels turning in your head, and the sensible part of his brain ordered him to flee, to run until he reached his dorm, safe from the world.

Safe from you.

But his feet refused to budge, heart refused to accept. He knew that you had seen the blood, the light was too strong for you to not have noticed. But why had you still chosen to stay by him, a complete stranger, at the dead of night? Why had you still chosen to care for him like his dead mother did, the warmth of your fingertips the exact same as hers?

More so, why was his vision not blurring out, memories not bursting in? Why were his fingers not aching to act, to kill?

How were you still alive?

"Jeongin," you whispered, tapping the boy lightly on the shoulder. "Jeongin!"

You watched him flinch at your voice, face incredibly adorable. You felt briefly aware of the blood that covered his entire body, and a slight fear clenched your heart.

A fear that did not go unnoticed by Jeongin.

"You should leave," Jeongin whispered, turning away. "Streets like these are dangerous. You can never trust anyone."

"I trust you."

Jeongin blinked rapidly, the weight of your words immensely foreign to him. He stared at you in surprise, confusion setting on his pretty features.

You felt like something.

Something that was very foreign to Jeongin.

"How–how come? You don't even know me-"

"You don't know me either," you scoffed, scooting over closer to the boy. "But it looks like you still care."

Somehow, anyhow, Jeongin knew who you were.

He had seen you sleep away all the psychology classes that you both shared, hair askew and cheeks rosy.

He had seen you feed the stray cats after dusk, the golden rays of the sun creating a halo around your head.

He had seen you punch the local bully without a care in the world, the rage that your eyes beheld instantly drawing Jeongin in.

He saw you now, refusing to leave a stranger that could inflict any amount of harm on you at any given moment.

Home, Jeongin realised.

You felt like home.

And this exact feeling had him burying his head into your shoulder, the dam of his poorly concealed pain breaking in an instant. He could feel your body stiffen, but just as he was about to pull away, he felt a pair of arms hold him close, and a pair of lips press a shaky kiss on his temple.

"You can tell me."

"Yang Jeongin, I believe you."

Why?

You had no idea yourself.

Maybe it was because you had seen him smile brighter than the sun every morning while serving your coffee, or maybe it was because every time his fingers accidentally brushed against yours, a lovely pink glow painted his cheeks and an even lovelier giggle slipped past his lips, and those little things enveloped your heart in the warmest of feelings.

Maybe it was because you had seen the boy helping several people cross the streets,or maybe it was because you had seen him donate every bit of his salary even though his clothes and shoes were among the shabbiest in the college.

Maybe it was because every time you pretended to sleep in the psychology classes, you caught the boy staring at you with the fondest expression in his eyes, and instead of feeling creeped out

You felt safe.

Yang Jeongin, what are you doing to my heart?

"You….can't," Jeongin tried to stop the words that tumbled out of his mouth, but somehow, for the first time in his life, he couldn't.

"I am not the person you think I am."

"I am a monster. A fucking-"

"Stop that," Jeongin could almost feel the hurt in your voice, and he looked up, only to find you scowling as if your life depended on it.

"You aren't a monster Jeongin."

Before Jeongin could stop himself, a thread that was holding him together snapped, and he found himself going back to the days that had brought him to his darkest, living in the pain that he had decided to abandon years ago.

"HE'S A MONSTER."

Jeongin stared at his father, the words that rang across the room very foreign to him. His mother had bought him a book of alphabets, but they never contained such hard, meaningless words.

But why was his mother shaking? Why was she crying at these words?

"That boy," the man's breath came out in sharp huffs as he kicked his wife off his way.

"Is not my son."

"Happy birthday, dearie."

Mother was sweet.

Mother was home.

Jeongin hugged the dusty, badly battered guitar close to himself, tears of gratitude welling up in his eyes.

"I am so sorry for not making this big enough, I did not have enough-"

A loud bang was enough to silence the frail lady, and Jeongin did not have to think twice to know that it was his father returning home utterly wasted after one of his unsuccessful gambling sessions.

"Stay in your room," his mother whispered, kissing his head with all the love and comfort that she could muster.

"It's fine."

But the deafening crash and screams that followed were enough to tell him that nothing was fine.

08.02.2009

"I swear to God, boy, if any of this reaches your mother, you are dead meat," Jeongin's father grabbed him by his collar, the rage in his eyes heavily contrasted by the horror in Jeongin's own.

The lady behind him slipped an indecent finger down Jeongin's body, grabbing and touching places that made Jeongin feel sick in the stomach.

"Sneaking around, were we?" she crooned softly, walking over to her lover's side. "You are exactly like your mother, darling."

"Dumb and naive."

Naivety, Jeongin had learned later, was far better than treachery and disloyalty. And he had decided to remain the same.

25.12.2013

"This is my favourite dress," his mother stroked his head, her voice soft and warm.

"Your father gifted this to me on our first Christmas together."

Jeongin looked at his mother, pain and disbelief coating his usually soft tone.

"Father did?"

"He did," she laughed, the scars that were carved into her skin alight in the moonlight. "And today, I have a gift for you too."

She pulled out a small box, fancy letters sparkling on its embroidered lid. Jeongin gently pulled it open, and gasped when he saw a new watch staring back at him, its surface polished and new.

"You didn't-"

"Don't mention it. Can't a mother give her only son a little gift?"

Mother was joy.

Mother was peace.

But this peace was promptly interrupted by the sudden screams of a man, his voice loud and actions dreadful. Jeongin shook in horror as his father kicked the door of his room open, his face pale as a ghost.

"She left me. SHE LEFT ME."

"Who-" Jeongin's mother trembled, signalling Jeongin to back off into a corner.

"You know who, you fucking bitch!" his father grabbed his wife by her hair, and smashed her head on the edge of the door. His fingers grabbed the old guitar by its handle, and with the force of a beast, smashed it repeatedly on the woman's twitching figure. Jeongin's brain screamed at him to close his eyes, to cover his ears. But he kept them open, watching as his mother slipped onto the floor, lying in a pool of her own blood. Her limp, lifeless body was kicked over by his father, shock clouding the man's eyes.

"She deserved it for messing this up — fucking bitch — could have sucked it up-"

The rest of it was a mere blur of continuous memories, partly because he could not remember and mostly because he did not want to remember.

One moment Jeongin was shaking in one corner of his bedroom, and the next moment he was pushing the man off the stairs, his head a mess of horror, sorrow and anger.

He did not know how he had thought of strangling his father, or from where he had gained the strength. All he knew was that he was seeking revenge, killing a man who was nothing but a monster, a man who was everything but a human.

Jeongin had crawled up to his room, hugging his mother until the truth sank in. The pretty yellow colour of her dress had turned red, the red that had turned out to sink into his life too. But it did not matter, because all he knew was that his mother was dead.

Memory. She had become a memory.

He had grabbed the watch in his slippery, bloody hands, and with a last glance at what was once a place where he felt safe, he had fled his house.

Jeongin, once just a mere boy, had then become a living monster.

Everytime he laid his eyes on the daily paper, all he saw was the grinning faces of those whom he had killed with his very own hands, not because he wanted to, but because they did not deserve a life.

Abusers.

Manipulators.

Mistresses.

Traffickers.

Monsters. They were all monsters.

Jeongin found himself panting when he finally stopped talking, the memories that he had shunted away haunting him in the worst ways possible.

He was scared. Scared of what you would think, what you would say.

"So you are," the words were dry on your tongue, almost as if they had sensed the turmoil that was raging through your heart. "A criminal."

"A serial killer. Is that what you are?"

Jeongin felt his entire body tighten up, the severity of your words venom in his ears.

Maybe you hated him too.

"Yes."

"That's what I am."

"I am a monster, Y/N. You are not safe here."

Jeongin was gentle.

And when you looked at his beautiful, amber irises, you realised that this gentleness needed a person.

A person that could give it company.

"You might be a murderer, Jeongin, but you are not a monster."

"You are far from that."

Maybe you should have felt repulsed. Maybe you should have felt your heart clench with dread and brain ring in alarm.

But to your surprise, all you felt was an unadulterated fondness for the boy before you, the boy who was seemingly nothing more than a stranger.

Yet was probably everything that a stranger wasn't.

"You have killed people, but that doesn't make you a monster. You have killed monsters, Jeongin. It makes you a saviour."

"Y/N-"

"But even with all of that, killing is not the right thing to do."

"It serves justice, but you are doing injustice to yourself by it. It does not suit you."

"I'll help you get through it. I'll heal your scars, I'll hug you close everytime you cry."

"Because, Yang Jeongin, you could never be a monster."

Jeongin's head was blurry, broken memories flooding in, urging him to take action. But his heart was warm, and the memories were not the usual stabs of pain and blood, but were like rays of sunshine,happy and warm. He saw himself, sleeping in his mother's arms, looking at her smiling face, playing with her in the garden, laughing with her even at the silliest of jokes.

He saw you, blushing when he added two extra shots of espresso in your latte just because he had heard you mumble it under your breath, giggling when you had caught him staring at your sleeping figure in your shared psychology classes and kissing his forehead when he broke down in your arms.

Love, he realised.

He was in love.

"I killed-"

"I do not want to hear you telling those things to yourself ever again."

"You have suffered a lot."

"It'll kill me if I see you suffer anymore."

Jeongin's fingers trembled as he tucked a stray lock behind your ear, the action carrying a fragility that was enough to shatter your heart into pieces.

In the cold glow of the moonlight, Jeongin did not look as if he was in pain.

Jeongin was pain himself.

"Why are you doing this? I might be luring you into a trap, I might be two blinks away from burying a dagger right into-"

"I don't care. Please let me trust you."

"Just this once."

In spite of his initial words, Jeongin felt a soft smile grace his lips, and with all the courage in the world, he took your hands in his.

"You know that you make no sense, right? You are actually in potential danger."

"Shut up, pretty boy. Let me have my moment."

You didn't know if it was because you were too fond, but the only danger that you felt scared of at that moment was the danger of getting your heart stolen by the boy right before you.

Was this love?

To your immense surprise, you felt a huge cloud of sleep loom over you, slowly pulling you into its trap. Without a warning, you placed your head on the dumbstruck boy's lap, winking when the familiar blush crept up his cheeks.

"The people are right."

"You really look beautiful when you smile."

When Jeongin's hand gently stroked your head, gentle hums of his favourite song lulling you into a peaceful slumber, you decided that you did not care if the boy was a killer.

Because Yang Jeongin was not a monster.

To you, he was your home.

And you would help him change, even if that cost you your own life.

In moments like this, with you in his arms and love in heart, Jeongin saw a future of endless possibilities laid down before him.

Maybe he would heal, little by little, until his scars faded and he was himself again. Maybe he would still hold you in his arms, never leaving your side even for a single moment.

Maybe the universe had something in store for him. Something sweet, something gentle.

For now, he would caress your head and doze off as the early rays of sunlight painted the skies, signalling a new day, and a pair's new beginning.

In the pale hours of dawn, the world saw Yang Jeongin as no monster, but a person full of love, compassion and unadulterated gentleness.

With you, Jeongin was a boy.

Just a boy.
