I feel what makes Huntlow work for both participants is the fact that...
Tumblr media
Hunter and Willow have both struggled with the misconceptions of different identities assigned to them. Hunter is seen by Philip as just his brother reborn and is treated as such, everyone else considers him the Golden Guard, and when Luz even brings that up in Hunting Palismen (“You’re not my friend, you’re just the Golden Guard”) it freaking breaks him, and he has to reiterate he’s not that. Hunter isn’t a teen to people, he isn’t himself but a copy of another person and/or the Golden Guard... Which itself is a legacy title repeated many times before, and even Darius judges him by that precedent.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Willow... She’s seen as weak and half-a-witch. Even her oldest friend Amity kinda viewed her as such, and it was that underestimation that led to a lack of communication, and a lack of agency for Willow in the two splitting apart. Everyone sees Willow as weak and timid and demure, Willow even struggles with her dads insisting she be in Abominations, which is NOT true to her! And even with her friends Gus and Luz, I feel Willow is just a bit haunted by the idea that they’ve known her originally, Gus especially, as the shy and bullied kid who had trouble standing up for herself. Luz remarks on how much Willow has changed, and while that’s true, to Willow this current self has always been what she really was. Hell, even her inner self laments that she was Willow until Amity damaged her mind, literally and figuratively.
Tumblr media
So I think that’s why Huntlow works for these two; They’ve only really ever known the other as the person they truly see themselves as, and it’s essentially a fresh start without the baggage of the past, the misconceived labels that are still hard to escape and that they want to move on from. Willow really only knew Hunter as himself, as a teen who she befriended, and him being the cold-hearted and professional Golden Guard didn’t come until after the fact, she was able to construct an understanding of Hunter separate from that persona and it clearly persists.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Hunter has only ever known Willow as his Captain, as the incredibly brave, powerful, and confident witch she really is. The idea that she’s scared or meek in any way is unimaginable to him, and it allows Hunter to clear who’s a real Willow from the fake; And Willow loves that! It makes her feel seen and no longer weighed down by those past illusions of who she was. Willow was never this shy kid, to Hunter she’s always been the coolest, toughest, witch he’s ever met. When Willow calls herself half-a-witch in a moment of crisis, Hunter is genuinely shocked that Willow would ever see herself this way, that she evidently has to default to that when in doubt of herself, and of course the implication that others saw her as that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But like. Even when they realize who the other is/was, it doesn’t really change nor make them backpedal on their view of the other. If anything it might just make them double-down on that perception of the other’s true self, and appreciate it more in the light of how Hunter and Willow’s true identities managed to shine and break through in spite of all the labels placed on them for years, when such a thing could really mess with and change a person, become a self-fulfilling prophecy and a nightmare illusion that becomes reality. They’re just glad they go to know each other first and foremost as who they really are, and be known that way as well; So as people with struggles over this issue of past identity influencing perception, it just really hits home and they love that of the other.
Tumblr media
Again, that isn’t to say they don’t value the help of others who knew them as their hurt persona, who still reached out to encourage and cultivate that inner, true self; Luz, Amity, Gus. But at the same time, there’s something nice and refreshing about being able to sort of reinvent yourself with this stranger, and be only that idealized self to them. And not have to worry about your friends worrying you’re that previous self, because Hunter and Willow don’t want to always have someone second-guess that self-actualization for them.
The doubt, while from a place of concern, can be tiring and it’s nice to just be free from any reservations like that. Hunter and Willow just feel seen around each other, in a way that’s unique because it was never marred by the first impression of something different. Each was readily accepted at face value with no suspicions, this is who they are, and it feels good to be trusted and taken seriously like that.

How about some skarlow angst prompt: Willow hits her head during flyer derby training and gets a small case of amnesia, forgetting everything up to her first meeting with Luz, forgetting Luz entirely, being friends with Amity again, the entrails, even forgetting Skara being her girlfriend, so her friends and girlfriend have to help her remember what willow forgot!
Ah, this one sounds like the sort of tale that would absolutely crush Skara and everyone who reads it.
Lets do it!
This one got… a little away from me, and basically evolved into an “Understanding Willow” sequel by accident. It’s a long one, so if you’re gonna read it, I suggest you grab some popcorn and prepare your tissues as well. Lots of Skara angst in this one…
Willow would be leading another exhilerating round of Flyer Derby practice. They'd be practicing a particularly bold new strategy Skara came up with: The Drop Ride, where a player distracts their opponent by letting them get close, only to drop straight down super fast right before another player to fly up from behind and snatche the opponents flag. Willow's a bit hesitent, thinking the move could be dangerous, but Skara insists that it's as foolproof as a sports strategy can get. So, with a sigh and a smile, Willow agree's to try it. And it goes well at first: Viney's and Hunter are able to complete the move with ease, Gus makes it look effortless, and Skara's able to complete it no problem. So then it's Willow's turn.
Skara's the one who has to grab the flag this time, and just because she's dating Willow doesn't mean she's gonna go easy on her. So, when she reaches to grab the flag... she grabs it! Right before Willow drops! But Skara grabbed the flag with enough strength, and Willow dropped with such force, that Willow loses control, and before she can get Clover to rise back up, she crashes to the field at such an angle she flys off her staff, hitting her head and passing out.
The whole team rushes to Willow immediatly. Skara's the first one to reach her, craddling Willow in her arms and begging her to be ok, but Viney arrives shortly after, testing to make sure what Willow's condition is. After a few quick tests, Viney confirms, thankfully, that Willow's breathing regularly, but she needs to get to a Healer's bed. Skara carries her girlfriends into Hexside as the Entrails follow along, Gus calling Amity and Luz to let them know what happened as Skara internally begs the Titan to let her Petals be ok.
After a few hours, the Entrails, Luz and Amity, and Willow's dads are all around Willow's bedside, worried about when she'll actually come to. Viney's running tests and casts the occasional spell to help with a scrape as Hunter and Gus stand by, grabbing anything Viney says she needs to help her. Luz is comforting Amity, who feels useless in this situation, where Abomination's would just get in the way. Willow's dad's are both getting a lot of practice out of their anti-panic technique they taught Willow all those years ago. And Skara's holding Willow's hand, trying to reassure them that she'll get up soon, Petals is the toughest Witch in the world, it'll be just like a quick nap. But internally, Skara's beating herself up, angry at how she was the one who encouraged the strategy that caused this and she was the one who grabbed the flag and she-
Before she can blame herself further, though, Willow's eye's flutter open. Skara can't help but let out a delighted squeel as she watches, and everyone else turns and smiles at the sight! Willow's ok! Skara wraps her arms around Willow's neck, laughing as she kisses her cheek, so grateful that she's come to-
And Willow shoves her off, completely mortified.
"What the-Why were you just kissing me?!"
Skara's taken aback, confused and a little hurt, but Willow scans the room and her panic continues.
"Who-who are you two," she says, pointing to Luz and Hunter. "Amity, what are you doing here? And what's with your hair?" She grabs at her braids, asstonished. "A-and what's with my-"
Viney quickly takes charge, telling everyone except for Gus and her dads to get out! Skara wants to stay, but Viney insists, pushing everyone out. Skara wants to go back, but Amity stops her: if Viney, the only Healer they knew, wanted them out right now, there had to be a good reason. And Skara can't argue with that. But... Petals...
After what feels to Skara like a small eternity, Viney returns. It appears that Willow's memories have regressed to before meeting Luz. She thinks she's still taking Abomination classes, doesn’t know anything about Flyer Derby-
“And thinks I’m still bullying her.”
It’s Amity who says it, but Skara thinks it to herself. It hurts, knowing Willow only can remember the worst things she ever did. The days she was friends with Boscha, before she stood up to her and left the triclops for her Petals. A part of her wants to cry and bemoan the unfairness of it all, but she knows this isn’t about her; it’s about Willow. So she takes a deep breath and asks Viney if there’s anything she can do to help.
Viney has one idea. And it’s one that’s a bit... unorthodox. And, they’ll need the help of a wise, powerful witch, who may be willing to bend a rule or two...
Willow’s put to sleep (which Skara can’t help but think makes her look like an angel... if a very spread out and loud angel) and Eda points them in the direction of one Raine Whispers, capable of doing what Viney wants to do: get someone inside Willow’s brain so they can help fix her memories. As soon as the plan is revealed, Luz and Amity volunteer: they both have experience going into Willow’s head, so it should be fine, right? But Luz suggests someone else: Skara. Everyone’s a bit surprised, but Luz reasons that, if Skara is the one who caused this mess, maybe she can be the one who can fix this, just like how Amity had to. Skara, wanting to make things right, agrees, standing tall and firm. As she looks down at her sleeping girlfriend, Skara promises the Titan, the Collector, whoever runs this stupid world, that she’ll do literally anything any of them ask, if it just means she can save Petals...
Raine hands Skara and Amity walkie talkies, casts the spell, and both Skara and Luz enter Willow’s mind forest. As Skara admires how even in Willow’s head, all her plants are beautiful, she takes note of a few things out of place: namely, shards of paintings, strewn across the forest floor, scattered like a thousand dulled stars. Amity explains the impact from the fall probably shattered them, which makes sense given how they were originally burnt when Amity set fire to her memories. The two set to collect all the painting pieces to set up all the memories the accident shattered. But as they do, Skara see’s herself in many of the still in-tact paintings. And many of those paintings painting her in a less then flattering light: laughing with Boscha as she made a cruel jab at Willow, pulling mean pranks on her. As she grabs more and more of the shards, she wonders more and more if she can really bring back... her Petals. If this flood of horrible memories is something she’ll think about, and if the reminder of who Skara was is going to cause Willow to break up with her. She shudders at the thought, trying to keep that idea out of her own mind for as long as she can...
But as that tries to leave her mind, a rustle in the bushes causes Skara to spin! Amity’s getting shards in the opposite direction! What...
Nothing. Nothing sits there.
Skara exhales, blaming it most likely on the wind. Willow’s... mental wind...
Over time, both Amity and Skara collect almost all the pieces and begin to put them together (thankfully putting the pieces together in the frame just magically reconects them as opposed to needing glue which is not something I thought about until now). Some of the memories are good repaired, actually: Saving the Boiling Isles once and for all, the Entrails first championship, Willow and Skara’s first date. But some of them... Skara just tries to get those pictures over and done with. Amity attempts to keep the mood light and jovial, but with Skara barely responding to anything she says, she eventually just sighs and says:
“She’s not going to break up with you over this, Skara. I promise.”
That’s what Skara hears. And that’s what she wants to believe. What she wants to think. That Willow’s just going to shrug this all off when it’s over, accept Skara’s apology and plan their next date. It be a perfect ending.
And Skara knows that can’t happen.
She points back to the pictures on display, some of them stuff about her bullying Willow, making fun of her with Boscha and Amity. How she helped to make the biggest, kindest person in the world feel small and helpless for years. The fact Skara was able to befriend Willow, let alone date her, is a miracle from the Titan! But now, if Willow forgot about those memories and her old ones of Skara hurting her just flooded back in, then even if she remembers the good times, would Willow still accept her? If she remembers this period with amnesia and all these bad memories is it going to hurt Willow too much to date Skara? And heck, since Skara was the one who got Willow in this in the first place then-
Amity tries to talk Skara down; she’s getting hyper, overly anxious and scared. But Skara can’t stop being scared. She doesn’t want to lose her Petals. Skara doesn’t want to hear her say their through because she realized she couldn’t handle their past anymore. And the more Skara imagines it, the more scared and anxious she becomes.
She panics, and in her panic, angrily cries.
“Even when I’m dating her, all I do is hurt Willow!”
But before Amity can say anything, a hulking behemoth formed of petals and a thin, wirey, cacoon-like mesh, smashes through the forest! Glowing bright scarlet in rage, the beast takes a fist, roars, and smashes one of the tree’s with a painting the girls had finished! Shocked and confused, Skara watches as the beast raises its fist again at another tree, before Amity snaps her out of it, and Skara lunges at the creature! Not knowing if she can even do magic here, Skara just gives the beast the ol’ Skara Special, the same move she tried on that EC gaurd who tried to capture her... but to no avail. All it does is turn to her, angrier then it was even last time.
“You. Hurt. Her!”
The creature smashes its fist into Skara, sending her realing. Luz is able to send the thing back, but it still attempts to destroy another one of the paintings on their way out, one of Boscha ‘pranking’ Willow with an exploding potion in her Abomination goop. As Skara recovers her senses, she asks Amity if she has any idea what in Titan just happened!  And Amity’s quiet. She doesn’t want to say it. So Skara asks again, because she knows if Amity wont tell her-
“It’s... I think that was her Inner Willow.”
Skara feels a lump in her throat, and her fear worsens. She can’t help it: She runs, runs back through the forest of memories, trailed by Amity begging her to stop. But Skara keeps running, because at least running is better then facing the idea of Willow-
Skara realizes too late that she’s smacked into one of the tree’s, diving headfirst into the painting. At first she’s scared: She just landed in another reminder of her mistakes! Thats all she can-
But no. Instead, when she opens her eyes, it’s not that at all! It’s a memory of their first date! Of Willow playing (well, breaking) a Test of Strength and winning Skara a stuffed Slitherbeast. Skara watches on, as Willow hands her past self the oversized prize, to Skara’s delight. She remembers how she still has it in her room, and how she cuddles with it whenever Willow can’t be there...
Amtiy arrives, asking Skara to stop running before realizing she had. So they both stop, and watch the silly couple walking away, Skara kissing Willow’s cheek as the two made their way to grab some Rotten Candy. Amity sighs as she watches, patting the space next to her as she sits criss-crossed.
“I think we should talk...”
So they do. Skara sits, knees to her chest, and admits she knows she’s selfish. She knows she’s being stupid. But she’s so, so scared of losing Willow.
“She’s the greatest thing to happen to me.”
She pauses.
“But you don’t think you’re the greatest thing to her?”
Amity sighs, placing a hand on Skara’s shoulder.
Skara takes a deep breath, let’s it out, and asks, shakily:
“If Luz… if she left you cause of how you used to be… what would you do?”
Amity’s eyes go wide. For a moment, Skara wonders if the idea of losing her girlfriend scares Amity more then it scares even her.
“I… I would be hurt. Incredibly hurt, I won’t lie.”
Amity takes her own shaky breath at the idea. “I’d probably curl into a ball on my bed and spend the next week crying. Losing Luz over the past… it would be like losing a limb.”
Skara knows it’s the same way with her.
“But… you’d get it?”
Amity nods. “I care about Luz. And I care about what she wants. What makes her happy. And if, Titan forbid, being with me didn’t make her happy… I’d break it off myself.”
It’s not exactly what Skara wants to hear, but it’s what she knows she has to.
Unfortunetly for them, their talk is interrupted tremors shaking the entire memory. As the two run to the gate, they spot the creature again, stomping about the forest and looking at other memories to smash. Remembering what Amity said earlier, about an ‘Inner Willow,’ Skara knows what she has to do. Leaping out from the painting, she runs up to it, standing in front of the newest painting to catch its eyes.
“Willow, I’m sorry! If you hate me, I get it, and if you want to... to break up then-”
But that’s as far as Skara’s speech goes before she’s punted down the length of the forest.
The monster follows after Skara, and Amity rushes to catch up. But as she does, somthing stops her. The faint sound of crying in the distance. A very specific crying.
Willow’s crying.
Amity stops in confusion, and turns to the sound, seeing a faint purple glow in the same direction. She calls out, trying to grab Inner Willow’s attention. As they look up, she see’s their glasses fractured, cracks all across them, as she tries to stand. Amity rushes to Willow’s side, trying to help her up.
“There was a thud, and the whole place shook, and so many memory paintings shattered and now somethings here and-”
Amity’s already grabbing the walkie talkie, calling on help from Raine and the others to know just what the heck whatever’s hunting Skara as she drags Willow to catch up to them.
As they run after Skara, she’s currently being cornered by whatever it is that’s in Willow’s mind. She’s stepping back, unable to turn away from it. She pleads with it to stop, to let them finish, but all it can do is swipe at Skara, crying ‘YOU. HURT. HER!’ Skara jumps to the side, as it smashes it’s hand into the tree, causing the whole thing to shake and shatter the painting, once again. But this time, it stops, staring down at the pieces in shock, before trying to take them into its oversized hands. Skara stares on in bewilderment as the creature begins to try and reform the painting after smashing so many of them?
And then she looks down at the shattered pieces, and realizes what makes this memory different: It’s in Willow’s apartment building, right outside her door. Both girls are in their finest dress up attire after Skara brought Willow home from a movie, talking and laughing and holding hands and blushing and Skara taking a deep breath right outside Willow’s door and-
This is the memory of their first kiss.
And Skara thinks she knows whats going on.
Back with Amity and Willow, Raine tells them about called an Algos: a phenoma where a person can bring so much fear into another persons head it manifests as a seperate being! And this Algos seems to be coming from Skara!
Which Skara herself realizes, as the creature begins to shrink down, morph, into a glowing purple mirror of herself, save for dark, empty eyes. She’s trying to repair the painting, frantically putting the pieces back together like her life depnded on it, muttering about how all of this was her fault, how she can fix this, how she has to fix this, how-
Skara takes a seat next to her counterpart, helping to repair the memory. “After we fix this one,” Skara tells them, “we should try fixing all the other ones... we smashed.”
But her memory mirror shakes her head. “We hurt her. We hurt her and she’ll remember that. But, if she can’t remember, doesn’t remember, then-”
“Then we just make the whole thing a billion times worse.” Skara turns to her counterpart, taking their hand. “Believe me, I get it. I’m terrified of what she thinks of us when this is over. If she’s gonna hate us or not. But... but this isn’t about us. It’s about her. And if after all this, she breaks up with us, then...”
Tears stream down the purple Skara’s face. She looks up at the real Skara, eyes filled with pain and hurt and understanding. Then, without warning, she wraps her arms around Skara.
And Skara wraps her arms around them.
“Skara! You here! You ok?”
Skara blinks, and her mirror image is gone, now replaced with Amity, and a glowing purple Willow with broken glasses. Seeing them, she smiles.
“I’m ok, yeah.” Then, looking back on the ground, she notes “C’mon. We got some memories to re-make.”
A couple hours pass as the three girls put the memories back together again. Skara doesn’t say a whole lot, not really sure what she can say. She knows that some of the memories they put together make her too happy to say anything. And some of the memories make her want to stay silent forever. But as she, Amity, and Willow slide the last of the pieces into the final memory, of agreeing to Skara’s stupid strategy, she knows she’s ready for whatever comes of it.
As the last of the memories are repaired, Willow’s glasses lose their cracks, and she looks at Skara, wide eyed and beaming.
Then, to Skara’s surprise, Willow hugs her.
And Skara hugs back.
With one last call to Raine, Amity and Skara return to the physical world. Viney, after making sure both of them are ok, holds smelling salts up to Willow’s nose and, much to everyones delight, she awakens. Coughing and hacking up a lung at the terrible smell, but awake none the less.
Everyone crowds Willow, hugging her and rapidly talking about how much their glad to have her back. Everyone but Skara, who stands behind them, still not sure what to say or do. But knowing she would only do it if it was best for Willow.
After a minute or two of everyones undivided attention, Willow notices Skara’s hesitation. She asks for some privacy, and after a few more hugs from Luz and some quick kisses from her dads, the room clears. It’s only the two girls, alone in the room.
Willow reaches out her hand. “You know I’m not gonna break up with you, right?”
Skara barely can believe the statement, even as she takes her girlfriends hand. “But when you pushed me away, and all the horrible memories... after getting you hurt again, how can you still wanna date me?”
“Because the girl who hung out with Boscha’s gone.” She squeezed Skara’s hand, smiling. “She’s just a memory. And now, I have this wonderful, amazing girl, this brilliant strategist and fun soul and silly bard, to be with.”
Skara can’t help but feel a few pinpricks of tears forming in her eyes. “Titan... you’re a sap when you wanna be, you know?”
Willow just smiles. “I’m glad I get to make new memories with you, Skara.” Right before pulling Skara in for a kiss.
And of course, Skara kisses back.

The Raven Witch Chapter 3
Read on AO3
First Chapter, Second Chapter
Sorry that it's mostly a rewrite of Luz and Willow and Amity in this episode but I wasn't sure how to break it up to get the parts that I wanted. Bare with me. This will probably be the last time it is so close to cannon.
"Stir cloak wise three times," Lilith said. The witch was standing over Luz looking over her shoulders. Luz did what the witch said. "Good now let sit for 4 hours."
"So what now?" Luz asked. Lilith looked deep in thought. The witch's eye bags looked worse than usual. Perhaps she hasn't slept in a day. It was pretty fitting considering she hadn't even realized what time of day it has been the entire time that Luz had been here.
"Well, I only have the one caldron... You can't exactly go looking for your own ingredients..." Lilith started.
"Why can't I get my own ingredients?" Luz asked
"You don't have any magic and you just started working on your first potion. Plus you can't identify the Boiling Isle's flora and fauna." Lilith explained. Luz frowned at that.
"I can too." Luz protested. Lilith huffed. "I think you are underestimating me."
"You have only been here three days. You being able to recognize anything will be impossible not to mention you don't have anything to defend yourself with." Lilith said
"I can handle it," Luz said. Hooty slithered over to Lilith and pressed his face to hers.
"Let her it'll be funny," Hooty said. Lilith sighed. The witch rubbed her head.
"Fine," Lilith muttered. She grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. She began to write down a list. She handed the paper to Luz. "Here's a list of the most basic potion ingredients. Be back in 4 hours." With that Lilith stood up only swaying slightly. Then she left the room. Luz took the piece of paper and headed towards the front door.
"Bye Hooty," Luz called out.
"Bbbyyyeeee Luuuuuuzzzzz." Hooty responded. Luz walked further into the forest that surrounded the house. She then pulled out the paper. She tried to read it, but unfortunately, it seemed Lilith has bad handwriting. Each letter was run together in such a way that she couldn't figure out what they were supposed to be.
"That's fine I can do this without a list," Luz said. She looked around and saw some sort of ball shapish thing. Luz kneeled down and picked it up. "This looks magical." Then Luz sighed. "Everything looks magical here. I have no idea what I am doing. Maybe Lilith was right."
"You can do it! You can!" A girl's voice said. Luz tucked the object into her pocket and stood up.
"Mysterious voice of encouragement?" Luz asked herself. She began to walk towards where the voice was coming from. She pushed apart a shrub and saw a young girl in pink and black clothes with dark hair and glasses. Luz gasped in shock. "No! Little witch girl."  The witch moved from her sitting position.
"You can do it. Even if you get a bad grade it's not a reflection of you as a witch. And my dads are right. There are better opportunities on this track." The girl told herself. She paced around. "Now get to school!" With that, she accidentally stepped on a flower. "Oh, no! Oh, little friend! I'm sorry!" She kneeled down and drew a circle over the crushed plant. The circle glowed green and revived the flower. There was a loud sound as if something was headed towards them. Just then a large wheelbarrow appeared from the forest with a girl with similar clothes and green hair riding on top of it reading as it glowed and moved on its own. It stopped before the other witch.
"Willow." The green-haired girl said. She closed the book as she looked over. "Wow, you're so unnoticeable I almost ran into ya." The green-haired girl jumped off and stood before the other girl. Her entire posture screamed superiority.
"Hi, Amity." The first girl, Willow said. She stood up with a timid demeanor.
"Shouldn't ya get to class early to prep your..." Amity started. She was cut off by another wheelbarrow shaking and tipping over. Purple goop poured from it. Willow turned around and followed the goop as it spread towards her. "Oh, Willow. You don't have anything to show, do you?"
"Witch drama," Luz whispered in excitement.
"This is why people call you Half-a-Witch Willow," Amity said with a sigh. Willow pulled her hood up and blushed in shame. Then there sounded like banging coming out of Amity's wheel burrow. "Oh looks like someone wants to say something to you." She removed the lid of the container. "Abomination rise." She snapped her fingers and a vaguely human shape goop figure appeared from the container. It leaned over towards Willow with a hand outstretched towards her.
"You're a star." The creature struggled. With its hand, it traced a shape onto her forehead.
"Aw, it's like mine," Amity said. She fixed something gold on her shirt. "But much smaller and meaningless. As top student, it's my duty to tell you to keep at it. Even you could get a passing grade someday." The condescension was clear in her voice. Luz didn't like her one bit. "Abomination cower." The abomination returned to its goopy shape and disappeared into its container. She put the lid back on and picked up the handles for the wheelbarrow. "See you in class, superstar." With that, she walked away. Willow turned away from her with her hood still up. She then removed it showing her sad look to the human. Luz stuck out her tongue as she passed by.
"Oh, see you in class, superstar." Willow mocked. She wiped away the goop from her forehead. "I hate when she does that. I hate making abominations. I hate getting bad grades. Ugh! I can't stand this anymore!" With that Willow's eyes glowed a bright green. Luz gasped in shock. Large vines grew around the girl. One of the vines headed straight towards Luz.
Luz let out a scream of fear as the thorny vine wrapped around her and dragged her towards the witch girl. She was flung into the air with the vine letting her go allowing her to fall onto the ground. The girl turned around and looked at the human. More vines wrapped around Luz's legs. The witch seemed to snap out of whatever she had been in.
Willow began to chant "no"s as she moved toward the human. "I'm so sorry." She kneeled before Luz using her magic to remove the vines.
"It's ok. The thorns only went through a few layers of skin." Luz said. Willow moved closer to the human girl.
"So circly." Willow said in confusion. Luz yeeped and then covered her ears with her hands. "You're human! This is astounding! A human on the Boiling Isles! How'd you get here? What are you doing here?" Willow helped Luz stand up and looked around at her as if studying her. Then what sounded like a bell sounded off. "Uh, I'm sorry. I can't stay. I have to go disappoint my teacher. It was nice to meet you, human." Willow began to walk away.
"Wait!" Luz called. She then chased after the girl. "I'm Luz and you're Willow, right? What you did with that flower and those plants it was wow."
"Thanks, but I'm not even supposed to be doing plant magic. My parents put me in the abomination track at school." Willow said. Luz squealed in excitement. She rushed forward and grabbed the witch's shoulders.
"Like, magic school? Like winding towers, cute uniforms, dark plots that threaten your life kind of magic school?" Luz asked in excitement. Willow nodded her head. "That's so cool! I'm so jealous. I have a teacher, but her lessons are a bit... I bet she wouldn't even let me enroll, but I wish I could spend one day there."
"I wish I could get a passing grade for once. Then people would stop calling me Half-a-Witch Willow." Willow responded. She kicked the goop and it made a groan of pain.
"Hey, wait. I know how we could both get what we want." Luz said. She bent down and grabbed a handful of goop. It reminded her of the slime that you would buy at the store. "Make me your abomination." She splats the purple goop onto herself. "I'll get you a good grade and you can get me into magic school. It's fiendishly clever."
"What?" Willow gasped
"I saw that girl's thing. It's just chunks of stuff that talks weird. I'm chunks of stuff and I talk weird!" Luz explained
"That's true," Willow said. She laughed a little. "Ok, it's a deal, Luz."
~~~
Lilith must have fallen asleep. For she was awakened by the smell of something burning. She sat up straight and began to rub her eyes to clear the sleepiness from her eyes. She didn't have time to sleep she needs to find ...it. Not to mention with the human her time is now divided.
"Hey, Lulu, what happens if the potion isn't stirred in 4 hours?" Hooty asked hesitantly. Lilith bolted up out of her chair. She swayed slightly getting to her feet but she couldn't let the weakness stop her. She rushed up the stairs and headed towards the kitchen.
The potion was smoking and sputtering sparks. Lilith began to cough on the smoke. She drew a blue spell circle in the air. The fire extinguished with her magic.
"Hootsifer open the windows and doors!" Lilith coughed out.
"On it," Hooty said. The House demon quickly did as he was told.
Lilith rushed forward and grabbed the bubbling sparking caldron not caring about the burns the hot metal was giving her. She rushed through the freshly opened door. She threw the caldron out of the door just in time because the potion exploded in bright green light. It released an awful smelling gas that caused Lilith to cover her nose and cough more.
"Where...on...Titan...is...Luz?" Lilith demanded between coughs as she reentered the house.
"LLLIIIIILLLLIIIITTTHHHH!" Said human cried. Still coughing Lilith quickly went to the front of the house. Luz latched onto her in a hug much to the witch's annoyance.
"What did you do?" Lilith grunted still coughing. The hug was not helping Lilith's breathing.
"So I was looking for ingredients. By the way, you have awful handwriting. Then I stumbled across this seed and then..." Luz explained quickly. Honestly, Lilith was too tired to decipher the human. Then Luz let go of the hug. "But wait, my new friends! They're in danger!"
"Luz!" Another young girl cried. Two young witches appeared one a boy and the other a girl. The three kids hugged each other.
"Great there are more of her," Lilith muttered fixing her glasses. The kids broke their embrace with the two girls holding each other's shoulders.
"You won't believe it, Luz. Everything is perfect now." The girl said
"It's true, I don't believe it," Luz responded
"Principal Bump was so impressed by my plant work he's switching me to the plant magic track." The girl said. So Bump has gotten a promotion since the last time Lilith had seen him. "Look!" The girl stepped back and twirled with her Hexside uniform turning green.
"Yes!" Luz celebrated clearly happy for her new friend. Lilith smiled slightly. They reminded her when her and...doesn't matter. The elder witch's smile faded. "What about Amity?"
"Last we saw, she was asking Bump if today could count as extra credit." The boy answered
"Well, I can't wait to see you in action next time I sneak in," Luz said. Then looks of distress and horror passed on the young witches' faces.
"Uh, about that...you're kinda sorta...banned." The boy responded. He then pulled out the banned poster for Luz to look at. Lilith facepalmed at that. Of course, she would pick up a human that could get banned from a school she didn't even go to.
"But we could come here and teach you what we learned." The girl reassured the human.
"Aw, that would be nice, but... I have a pretty great teacher already." Luz said. Lilith was shocked at that. She quickly recovered.
"And I have a pretty good apprentice when she follows directions," Lilith said. Luz looked guilty.
"What's that smell?" The boy asked. Lilith crossed her arms and Luz shrunk deeper into herself.
First time watching ToH S1E7 (Lost in Language). Thoughts below:
Detailed thoughts:
This is the third episode in a row that’s revealed some pretty big details about Amity and why she is the way that she is. Amity is the youngest of her three siblings and is always treated as such by Emira and Edric. It’s unsurprising that Amity acts so standoffish and doesn’t apologize to Luz earlier (even when she clearly wants to) when ‘showing weakness’ and is liable to get her bullied by her own family.
Ed and Em excuse their abusive behavior by hiding behind the excuse that they’re ‘family’ and practicing ‘tough love’, doing anything they can to destroy her self-esteem because she’s too ‘full of herself’ and ‘tattling’ on them. It’s no wonder why Amity puts so much emphasis on her schoolwork and lords it over others, it’s probably the one thing that she can prove she has over her siblings, given that she’s “the only one who knows Ed and Em aren’t perfect.”
The fact that Ed and Em “keep getting away with things” and never take accountability for their actions is probably why she continues to be taken aback by Luz opening up and apologizing to her.
I also have to wonder whether Amity is imitating (intentionally or not) Ed and Em’s ‘tough love’ when we first see her w/ Willow in E3. According to her journal when talking about Luz, she doesn’t “want to come off as cruel, [she] just can’t show weakness.”
While Amity’s comments felt like feigned sympathy and encouragement at the time, could it have been genuine? Is that why she volunteered to have her abomination presented first? To keep everyone else from doing extra homework?
There is one last question about Amity that needs to be asked: how does her parents factor into all of this?
Shout-out to Luz for being a genuinely nice person standing up for and apologizing to Amity. Even though she’s ostensibly her rival, Luz still reaches out and tries to connect with Amity as a person whenever its clear that her actions have upset her, and it seems to be working.
If anything, Luz needs to take a firmer stance when others try to push her into morally dubious behavior. First with Eda cheating during the witch duel, then her friends pressing her to keep animating the Owl House, and now Ed and Em stealing Amity’s journal.
Once again, Eda is always the most resistant to feelings and experiences like Magic School, Covention, and Moonlight Conjurings only to come around to the idea by the end of the episode. This time though, it wasn’t Luz that led to Eda changing her mind.
General thoughts:
“I’ve been sucked into your awful fandom!” Big mood King, big mood.
Despite everything, at least the Boiling Isles has a well-funded public library system.
I like the snarky front desk librarian and sad existential librarian Garry.
Demon decimal system!
Crystal ball reference guides! Not the most convenient thing in the world, but it definitely earns style points.
AMITY READING TO THE KIDS ;_;
Is Otabin the Bookmaker a metaphor for Amity this episode? I mean, she does get a book of friendship by the end of it.
Mittens is a cute nickname, but considering who gave it to her, I’m not so sure about using it.
Ed and Em break into the library with what seems to be some sort of key scroll. Is there any connection between it, glyphs, runes, and Luz’s symbols?
The wailing star animates books, and the moon animates objects on conjuring night. There seems to be powerful magic held in celestial bodies.
Otabin seems to be a really popular kids book if Eda has it lying around the Owl House.
I want to read Pride and Pythius.
Where did Amity get Good Witch Azura? Lampshaded in the episode.
Luz is bi! Get out the confetti!
Amity’s not a mean girl (well, kinda), she’s just misunderstood! Amity friendship arc hooray!
I’m surprised Amity didn’t get banned from the library too, but apparently they managed to clean everything up before morning. Maybe through telekinesis and construction magic?
God damn it Hooty don’t ruin the moment!
Aw c’mon why people mean to Hooty :c
The Bat Queen is important enough to get named in the credits?
So...we know that Luz was seen by most people as an outcast and a weirdo in the human world, according to what we see of her time there.
I think a large part of what makes her so quick to help others and express affection is that she's never had that outlet.
It's funny to see her share a dance with Amity and tell her “it’s what friends do” but it’s also kinda sad and understandable?
She'd been friendless for a long time, like Amity. Luz might not have had as much internal trauma as Amity before coming to the Isles, but I think she’s so eager to give love to others because she hasn't been able to enjoy that in the past. It's so much fun for her to finally be able to have friends to love and help.
It's why she has a hard time comprehending romantic signs from Amity-
Luz blushed back in Escaping Expulsion because Amity spoke to her through her own way of love- taking risks and helping others. That's Luz's love language; when Amity returns that favor, it's easier to reciprocate.
In previous episodes...Because helping others was merely a way of expressing her love, Luz didn't connect it back to having a possible crush on Amity. Luz's love language is shown in almost every episode with conflict (with Eda, Willow, Amity, etc). Her determination to succeed often makes her overlook potential risks and signs. Luz’s desire to befriend Amity goes beyond her Azura fantasies.
It’s why Lumity wasn’t able to work in that way before-
As a result of Luz and Amity's different love languages, they weren’t able to realize that their crush was reciprocating their love. They understand love in two different ways.
Also, this was probably the first time she had any friends. It’s exciting; so why not make more, right? Having connections with others is so important to her. Luz likely hasn't had a crush on anyone who she could actively call a friend, so any feelings of romantic attraction simply seem to be kind, platonic affection to her. It’s the only actual love she’s ever known. And as Dana already mentioned, she had lots on her mind, such as Eda's curse or her conflict about sharing the truth with her mother.
She’s thrilled with having friends that care about her, which is why she has trouble distinguishing platonic and romantic feelings. Luz is affectionate in general, so her obliviousness is understandable. Another important thing to note is that Luz could also be self conscious. What does she really think of herself? It’s possible that she thinks too highly of Amity (among the first things she learns about Amity is her high academic and social standing) to suspect that she would be interested in Luz.
We’re talking about a girl (platonically or romantically) has been rejected her whole life. Think about it. Her lack of friends back home makes it difficult for her to adjust to people being friendly and accepting of her. Adding someone being romantically interested in her on top of that? If I was Luz, even even I would struggle to comprehend it. Luz never had an outlet for receiving affection in general- even friendship is something she’s still discovering. That’s mainly why she doesn’t pick up on Amity’s crush.
Luz's kindness is unconditional. She doesn’t help others expecting a reciprocal reaction from them in any way. Aside from that, she's seen Amity's parents and is aware of their standards for who Amity is allowed to associate with. She’s also seen that Amity is willing to push that limit if they hurt her friends.
Initially, Luz was the one who befriended and helped Amity. Luz being taken aback and blushing in Escaping Expulsion was the result of Amity reciprocating that. Returning her act of service.
While Luz has struggled as much as Amity, it's less obvious because she's always been so bubbly and happy, she's that character who gets swept away by her radiant personality and jumps over the shadows. Amity is the opposite.
“That’s what good friends do.” Having Luz offer a dance under the blanket of friendship is her way of being able to help someone she genuinely cares about; it's also a way for Amity to justify the dance to herself. And to help Amity cope with rejection. We all know who Amity actually wanted to ask out- But Luz is probably still under the impression that Amity was rejected by someone else.
Luz indulges in others’ fantasies (King’s requests, dancing with Amity, helping Willow, Amity and Eda, etc) partly because she herself has fantasized about things a lot, but never got the chance to live them out. The thrill of living the fantasy she's always imagined is what made her want other people to experience it too. This is also one of the reasons Luz is so kind. Knowing what it's like to have her interests downtrodden, she knows how good it feels to be loved by others.
Love is touch for Amity, not service. I'm not going into that, but it's obvious that Luz's touch makes her blush and physically react. WILW was basically Lumity trading love languages - Amity rushed to go talk to Willow and Gus to help Luz, and played the game with her and Willow despite it meaning destroying her social status. And despite her “weak nerd arms” Luz offers to carry Amity to the nurse when she’s hurt.
Also, Luz and Amity are literally inseparable- Luz is always helping her out. Even if the love was rivalry at first, it still kept them actively thinking about one another. In Covention, we get to see Amity's depth and the reasons behind her behavior in I Was A Teenage Abomination. Luz immediately tries to befriend her after the duel.
Intimidation was the way Amity kept her place and hid her weakness.
But suddenly, here’s the girl she was deliberately mean to, trying to build a genuine relationship with her to gain her trust. When she realizes that Luz isn't as she thought and, regardless of her generally wacky attitude, is willing to put in her best and succeed, she accepts the friendship.
Lost in Language is another important episode where they continue to build trust. That’s where Luz sees a different side of Amity and wants to know more. To do so, she tries to better understand her, and in the process, they get captured and need to work together to get out alive. (Unrelated, but I’ve always imagined that this is the episode Amity started developing her crush on Luz lol)
Throughout every shared episode they have, there's some sort of growth. First, we have Luz offering her book about Good Witch Azura so they can discuss their interests further. Then Adventures In The Elements- she accidentally endangers their friends, so she takes it upon herself to help Amity save them. Despite Amity's protests, Luz basically does whatever she can to ensure that she helps. There’s Luz expressing her love language to the fullest. Throughout Understanding Willow, Luz also tries to help Amity correct Willow's memory, and other than the moment in the room, Luz isn’t angry with her. Instead she understands her mistake, and tries to encourage Amity. And then of course, Enchanting Grom Fight, where Luz offers her a dance just to make her feel better about rejection.
She's repeatedly gone out of her way for Amity, whether it's picking her up books, carrying her, or fighting Grom for her, it's evident she'd do anything for her.
The reason Lumity wasn’t working, traces back to their two different love languages. After WILW, the next episode with these two is Escaping Expulsion- in which Amity decides to openly disobey her parents out of love for Luz. And something finally happens. First time we see Luz blush over Amity's actions. Now that they've both learned more effective ways to communicate, we're seeing lots of progress. Only lack of communication was the reason Luz wasn't able to tell Amity was into her (besides the other things on her mind like Eda's curse). Amity wasn’t anywhere close to confessing and the idea wasn’t even consciously there for Luz.
Now that they're developing a better understanding of each other, Luz is finally realizing and reciprocating and Amity is becoming more comfortable around her.
(I want the library episode so badly rn)
sorting the owl house characters into hogwarts houses, because im cringe
luz - ravenclaw
she’s creative and clever and is always searching to learn new things and loves learning just for the sake of learning. shes incredibly witty and quick thinking and open-minded. she’s constantly finding clever, creative, and original ways to solve her problems. she hardly blinked when given the opportunity to learn magic, and only continued to show an intense amount of intelligence and appreciation for academics. shes very resourceful as a human learning magic, finding a entirely new form of magic when it was apparent that she couldnt do it the traditional way. she’s very aspiring, wanting to be a witch and an author since she was very young. she’s very logical about a lot of things, like how it doesnt make sense to not allow witches to study multiple tracks or that people were imprisoned just for being themselves. she’s highly encouraging of individuality which is a lesser known trait of ravenclaw but very important. she can be a perfectionist at times and tended to avoid social interaction so she could persue her creativity. she’s outspoken, an overthinker, and very competitive. i think a lot of people might say she’s a hufflepuff, as she’s loyal and kind and hardworking, but luz values learning and creativity above any of those other things— this is evident, when she makes the decision to stay in the boiling isles to learn magic rather than go home to her mom, thus putting knowledge and creativity over her own family.
eda - gryffindor
she’s not afraid to stand up for herself and others and will never back down from a challenge. she would rather die as herself than live unauthentically. she’s very passionate and empathetic. she’s rebellious against rules that dont make sense to her and cares intensely for her friends and family. she has a strong internal moral code that she sticks to intensely, never straying from it. in the very first episode, she breaks into the conformatorium just to get a paper crown thats important to king. she let raine break up with her because she didnt want to burden them with her curse. she forfeited the match with lily because she knew her sister wanted to be in the emperor’s coven more than she ever did. she’s sacrifices herself for luz & king over and over again because she cares so deeply for her.
king - slytherin
he’s self-centered, smart, arrogant, and highly ambitious. he would do anything to achieve his goals— which was at first reclaiming his throne as the king of demons, and then turned into finding out where he came from. he tried to use luz as a means to reach his goals when he became an author, nearly sacrificing their friendship. he became incredibly loyal to luz after that in the same way he’s loyal to eda, the one who raised him.
(other characters under the cut)
lily - slytherin
it was between this and ravenclaw, because she’s incredibly intelligent and does seem to enjoy learning and has a great mind, she’s also incredibly ambitious and prideful. the deciding factor was that she cursed eda just to reach her own goals. she’s still loyal to eda even when working for belos, which says a lot to how she’s loyal to only a select few people. to her, the ends justify the means (making amity cheat to appear like the better teacher, cursing eda to win the duel, kidnapping luz to get belos to cure eda, losing her magic to help eda)
amity - gryffindor
this one was hard, i swapped between slytherin and gryffindor a lot for her. she’s ambitious and intelligent, but also not afraid to do whats right even if means breaking the rules. she’s self-sacrificing and empathetic and prideful. she ended her friendship with boscha to help luz and willow win. she didnt like luz at first because luz kept cheating and messing up her life, which means she has a strong moral code against cheating and bullies. she’s rebellious in small ways at first but once she started realizing how terrible her parents and belos really were, she pulled away extremely quickly.
willow - slytherin
not surprising, if you take into her account of self-preservation and bending of the rules to suit her ambitions. in the first episode she agrees to cheating just to get ahead in school because she wants to make her parents proud, and in the end she switches to the plants track so to her the ends justify the means. she pulled out of the grudgby game when luz pushed her & gus too far, a perfect example of that self preservation. she has a sense of loyalty that extends to very specific people but she always makes sure those people are taken care of. her parents, luz, gus, and eventually king, eda, and amity, too. she wouldn’t die for them, but she would kill for them.
gus - hufflepuff
sure, he has the ravenclaw curiousity and thirst for knowledge, but he’s very kind, hard working, has a strong inner sense of justice and fairness, and is tolerant of others. he helps mattholomule even if he’d been a jerk before because it was unfair if he didnt. he helps luz break into belos’s castle to find a cure for eda, lets luz borrow his library card to see amity, and hated it when mattholomule tried to lie about the human objects. he knows what it feels like to be left behind and underestimated, so he makes an effort to be kind to others who seem to be in the same boat. he’s very young but already so accomplished which is a testament to how hard he works.
hunter - hufflepuff
this one was HARD. it was either slytherin or this, and a deciding factor for this is the fact that he is self-sacrificing. he sacrifices a lot for other people, even if it doesnt seem like it. in the palisman episode, he sacrifices the palismen getting away despite knowing he would be punished for returning empty-handed. in eclipse lake, he leaves to find the titans blood for belos when he simply could have stayed in the castle and been safe. he’s viciously hard-working, dedicated, and loyal to his family. he lets people’s actions speak for them. he doesn’t immediately judge luz for using wild magic and actually seems interested in it before remembering to be loyal to belos. he’s patient, too, as seen by his interactions with luz. he gets frustrated, sure, but he still works with her. he’s modest about his rank and title, preferring to not flaunt it more than needed. but he does take pride in it. he’s kind in his own way, specifically to belos and lil rascal, but you can see it in his interactions with amity & luz, too. with amity, he empathizes with her and gives her advice that he thinks is true, and offers to dig a grave for her too when its apparent that neither of them are getting any titans blood. with luz, he gives up the palismen and protects her from kikimora. that boy is a hufflepuff for sure.
raine - gryffindor
oh buddy theyre the biggest gryffindor ever. they extremely, extremely brave. they have terrible stage fright and anxiety but they still became head bard, and they still ran an underground resistance group, and they still gave everything up just to help eda. they have a strong sense of whats right and whats wrong and incredible amount of passion, empathy, and integrity. they have a great sense of pride— “How did someone with stage fright end up as Head Witch?” “I’m just that good.”— and are very selfless. they stopped eda from sacrificing herself because they knew her kids needed her more, they sacrificed themselves in eda’s place and gave up everything they had just so eda wouldnt have to.
camila - hufflepuff
she’s extraordinarily kind, even when she’s terrified. she’s accepting and open-minded and hardworking, making sure to show luz that she loves her creativity but still wants to make sure luz can do well in school and can make friends. sometimes you can do something you think is kind but isnt really. she’s also a single mother doing her best to give her daughter a good life, which is a credit to how hard she works and how dedicated she is to her daughter. she even took the day off of work to drive luz to camp because she knew luz was anxious and wanted to reassure her. she’s patient with luz, and even when faced with the scariest moment of her life, she’s still thinking of how luz feels rather than her own fears and anger. she’s very much a hufflepuff in the way that she’s quiet and unassuming but fiercely protective of her family.
vee - slytherin
she’s opportunistic and has a sense of self-preservation. she’d rather save her own skin than do that right thing. she’s cunning, having pretended to be camila’s daughter just to have a place for herself. this isnt a bad thing at all, though. she’s also loyal to camila, who she sees as her family, and even got into a fight with luz over how she treated camila. she still listened to luz and let luz help her so that vee could remain living as luz. she doesnt feel guilty about valuing herself ahead of luz.
belos - ravenclaw
honestly? not a hard decision. he’s smart, sure, but he’s not people-smart. he didnt think lilith would betray him after he admitted to lying about healing eda. he doesnt understand loyalty, not even to those close to him. he’s rational and logical rather than emotional. if the theory that he is philip wittebane is to be believed, then its obvious he has an appreciation for learning and knowledge. belos distinctly reminds me of lockhart, or even quirrell, who were also in ravenclaw. he’s got an arrogance to him that blinds him, believing himself to be the smartest and strongest witch on the isles and thus underestimating others, which will only lead him to ruin.
since I’m more or less back in business I feel it’s past time I ramble about another au I will (probably) never write. I’ll start off simple with an amphibia owl house au I was thinking up last night at work. (slight disclaimer that I have not seen any of season 2 yet so this is with exclusively information through the end of season 1). Concept below the cut cause it’s a pretty extensive one.
The concept starts at the same point the owl house does, more or less. Camila is concerned, Luz is getting sent to summer camp etc. etc. This time she gets distracted by an unusually pink frog hopping into the woods, and decides she probably has time to go chase after it. So she follows it into the woods until she suddenly trips over something and falls to the ground, turning around she sees it to be a music box sticking out of the forest floor. Curious, she digs it up and starts examining it. She thinks it’s really pretty and she’s about to open it when she hears voices coming from nearby and goes to check it out.
She finds Willow and Amity in a small clearing, think essentially the scene in the actual owl house where she sees them for the first time, except here they’re both human, though Luz doesn’t know them because they both go to some pretentious private school, Amity because she’s a Blight so she had to, and Willow because she got a scholarship for it and didn’t have the heart to tell her dads she didn’t really want to go. The scene plays out in a similar fashion to how it does in the actual show, with the exception that this time without the magic element Luz doesn’t feel the need to keep hiding and instead marches up from her hiding place to chew out Amity for being a jerk. Unfortunately she stumbles on a tree root as she approaches and, still holding the music box, accidentally pops the lid open.
So that’s how the three of them get transported to Amphibia. I like the idea of taking the setup and world of Amphibia, which we’ve seen through the lens of the characters that got transported all being close “friends”, and coming at it from a different perspective, i.e. one of them is a complete stranger to the other two and the two that do know eachother are already not on very good terms going in. (Amity and Willow have essentially the same history in the au that they do in toh).
Luz is dropped right in the middle of Newtopia, and while she’s very excited about the prospect of a fantasy adventure, she’s also pretty worried that she has no idea how to get back home, and she doesn’t take to the city as well as Marcy did. Part of this is due to her having her doubts about the ruler of Amphibia, who in this case is not Andrias, but Lilith(I understand Belos is probably a more fitting character for the role but I just don’t know enough of his character or really care about him enough to implement him, so Lilith it is! She’s more interesting for the setup anyway, depending on what Andrias’ weird master thing ends up being, maybe that would be a belos type deal but honestly I’d probably just not implement that part into this. If you can’t tell this is much less a “amphibia but with the owl house cast” and more of a actual approach to writing something new with the old setting and characters).
This is mostly due to the fact that, while wondering around the city attracting suspicious stares from newts that have never seen someone like her before, she ends up bumping into a newt who appears to be running from the majority of the city guards. They both fall down and Luz helps her stand up, a showing that is enough to convince the guards that, whatever the weird creature is, it’s in league with the felon, so they begin chasing her too. The criminal newt, who is of course Eda, takes pity on her and brings her along to her hideout, where she meets a weird little robot that insists she refer to him as King. He begins to declare that his full title is “King of...” and then kinda falters off as he seems to realize he actually isn’t quite sure what he is. Luz gives Eda a concerned Look but she just kinda shrugs it off and says he always does that.
Luz finds out that Eda deals in the trade of questionable artifacts and considers herself pretty lucky to find someone like that as soon as she did, and she asks if Eda knows anything about a music box, describing it as best as she can, because she didn’t really think to take any pictures. For her part, Eda is pretty sure what it is, and that’s the moment where she resolves to watch over Luz, at first just because she’s Concerned the box is back in Amphibia, though it eventually ends up that she gets a soft spot for the kid.
Though Luz doesn’t find out a good deal of this until later, and it’s gradually, Eda is still Lilith’s sister here, meaning that yes, she had equal claim to the newtopian crown, but the history of the crown never sat well with her (i.e. she finds out newtopia was built on the foundation of bloody conquest, along with the fact that it’s encouraged they want to get back to that point and nopes out of there). While she’s on her way out she starts off her new life of stealing shiny things by grabbing a weird little statue that had always seemed kinda off to her. She figures she could sell it at least, but while looking over it after escaping she realizes that it isn’t a statue at all, but what she decides must have been a defective robot from newtopia’s past, being much smaller and more... expressive? Than it should have been. For some reason she decided to try fixing it, and though it took a good deal of time she eventually got it to work again, which is how she came to be friends with King.
Luz’ story is largely slice of life relationship building with her, Luz, and King, until the point where the path to the valley opens, and the three of them go on what Luz finds out is an annual trip Eda takes around the valley to see if she can find anything interesting to add to her stand, as well as find new customers in the valley. Luz figures if she has a shot at finding either of the two girls she came with, and hopefully the box too, it would be on that trip.
Willow gets thrown into Toad Tower before she even realizes what’s happening to her. She has no idea where she is, didn’t even get a good look at Luz before the teleportation happened back on earth, and is overall not having a great time. She’s not convinced she’s not dreaming until she’s literally tossed into her cell and the impact hurts enough that she’s sure she’s really there. At first she believes she’s alone in her cell until she hears an awe-filled voice ask what she is and why she’s there. She isn’t able to figure out where the voice is coming from until a tiny blue frog jumps up on her hand. She introduces herself as a human, which gets him very excited, and he introduces himself as Gus, explaining that he was thrown in prison for “almost kind of knowing things he shouldn’t” as he put it.
It turns out Gus is something of a scholar, though he admits that most frogs are more inclined to call him a crazed conspiracy theorist. All of his studies have to do with mysterious other worlds and their inhabitants, which he has always been stubbornly insistent do exist. He’s overjoyed that he finally has “a real life specimen!!” and Willow is excited enough at the idea that there might be someone who actually knows what happened to her that she lets that comment slide. She quickly finds out what the meaning behind his weird prison sentence is, as she brings up getting sent to this world from another, and he attempts for a wise nod as he goes “ah yes, you must have experience an encounter with the calamity bucket.” Still he’s kind of helpful and he and Willow get along pretty well, so they end up hanging out together for the rest of the story, he basically tags along everywhere with her Jiminy Cricket style.
Amity has arguably the hardest time adjusting to the world she suddenly finds herself in, as she ends up in the forest on the outskirts of Wartwood, and promptly determines that this is the worst thing that’s ever happened to her. Despite having the box that “weird girl” used to send them here, opening it and closing it over again provided no help at all, and trying to go into Wartwood provided even less. Still being in Full Blight mindset she is really haughty and superior and the townspeople do not take it well. Even deducing Toadstool as the only persons superficial enough to potentially care about her status, she can’t get anything out of him cause he views her as a massive publicity risk, which he’s already not doing super well at.
The only frogs in the village that seem to not turn away from her immediately are a mischievous pair of frog twins that joke around and mess with her, and though it’s all lighthearted she’s stubborn enough at first that when they do offer to help her out she flat out refuses them. Eventually between living in a cave and their hanging around her whenever she’s in town anyway she’s worn down enough that she begrudgingly accepts their offer of help.
Not being Blights in this au has done a good deal in the way of making Edric and Emira happier. While they’re just as much of tricksters as they always are, and they occasionally overstep a little in their jests, they’re quick to apologize, and lack any of the actual malice behind their knack for causing trouble. The two of them run one of the stands in the marketplace, something they get Amity to help out with eventually as the town warms up to her. The two of them find it easier to grow closer to Amity than the rest of the town does, maybe it’s cause they’re the only ones who have really tried, or maybe it’s cause they’ve got a reputation for being trouble in the town already anyway. Whatever it is Amity gets begrudgingly closer to them until she eventually refers to them as her siblings once, and though they refuse to let her hear the end of it for a few days, they’d been calling her their little sister since the beginning, and while Amity had been certain for a long time they were just doing it to mess with her she starts to like it eventually.
Like in Amphibia, the three girls all represent one aspect of the Heart, Strength, Mind trio. Figuring out what those all are takes a lot more for these girls than it does for the amphibia trio though. The focus of this story is less on the relationships the characters have, though that is definitely a part of it, and more on the attributes their assigned to and the personal growth they have. Each of them holds the attribute that is both their strongest and most repressed. The three all hold themselves at very little value in the areas they’re actually the strongest in, and through their journey in Amphibia they start to learn.
Willow had always believed that strength was an inherently negative thing. Strength equated to power, and people who had power used it to hurt others, without fail. People like, well, Amity. She prefers gentleness and peace, and to her that and strength is mutually exclusive. She reacts to the concept that she could be charging the box with the attribute of strength very negatively.
Through her time in Amphibia she gets to learn that her strength can come in different forms, and while she is undeniably strong physically, her physical strength is nothing compared to her emotional resolve and capacity to extend that emotional resolve in the strength of heart to pick up the people around her when they need it. She does, though, get to learn that power isn’t something that is inherently evil, and even that if she uses the strength she has to protect the things that are important to her, that doesn’t mean she’s forsaken any of the things believes.
aka she gets to punch a heron in the face. Boscha (captain of toad tower) is very impressed, though she pretends she isn’t. Speaking of Boscha, she gets to experience a similar development to Willow, but more on the reverse side of the coin. Having always been powerful, and that having always been enough to make her more important than everyone else, Willow strikes her as weak at first, given her lack of aggression. The longer she stays stuck with Willow though, the more she comes to realize some important things, foremost among them being that Willow could totally kick her ass, and just chooses not to, which isn’t something Boscha understands at all, and Willow ends up teaching her how to be more of a person than a weapon, even just leading by example.
Much to Willow’s complete disbelief, (she swears to Luz the box is broken and they’re doomed), Amity is the heart. Amity doesn’t really believe it either. Strength would’ve been Okay, but personally she would’ve picked the attribute of intelligence for her. It was like the box went through all the effort of looking into their souls and didn’t even bother to check her report card. Ludicrous. It doesn’t help her that her time in wartwood is miserable for a good deal of the start. For the first time in her life Amity isn’t perfect, and it’s all because there’s nothing to be perfect at in this stupid little town. She should have all the frogs praising her superiority, but literally None Of Them are impressed by her in the slightest. They didn’t even have a school!
The only thing Amity took to quickly in Wartwood was the town motto, resolving that she would be even slower to respect the citizens of Wartwood than they would her. This started off a bit of a rivalry between her and the town, but the longer she had the horrible influence of her parents replaced by the well meaning nagging from her frog siblings, and the more time she spent not being perfect because for once in her life she literally couldn’t be, she started to think it wasn’t so bad after all, and the little rivalry between her and the town became much less of a real one, and a lot more of the friendly banter type, though she couldn’t recall ever making a concious choice to do so it just sorta... happened.
Eventually she starts to think about the school she was initially so annoyed didn’t exist, and begins to wonder if really no one is gonna do anything about it being in ruins. Eventually, she starts going over to the ruined building and reading to whatever kids in wartwood were in the mood to listen. before she knew it she had built up the closest thing to a school Wartwood had in a while, and where she once would have felt a smug pride, she only felt a casual happiness that was new to her, but not entirely unpleasant.
Luz never would have considered herself good at any of the three options. She knows she’s not strong so that’s out. All the kids at school think she’s weird and she has no friends so she really doesn’t think the whole “heart” thing works in any capacity. But the only thing left besides that would be intelligence, and she’s had enough students and teachers alike call her out for being an idiot that she’s absolutely confident that isn’t it. It doesn’t help that since she’s with Eda, who actually knows what the box is, she ends up worrying over what she’s supposed to be from the very start. She spends a lot of the time before the valley opens up thinking the box made a mistake, and since she didn’t have any of the attributes it wanted it wouldn’t work again at all.
In the end she only finds out what she’s supposed to be through process of elimination. Knowing Willow is strength and Amity is heart she finally comes to the realization that she’s supposed to be intelligence, and her confidence crumbles. Of all the options that’s the one she’d been hoping it wouldn’t be the most. How could so many people be wrong after all? It was pretty unanimous back home that she didn’t really have much going on upstairs, and after hearing it enough time she had gotten around to believing it. Her path in the story  largely focuses on coming to terms with her own worth, despite her insecurities and the weight of everything she’s ever heard to the contrary constantly on her mind.
Fortunes of Love pt 3 (Eda x OC)
Summary:
King has a bad day and now has to try and face a problem he is not at all prepared to deal with.
Pt 1  Pt 2  Pt 3
Eda grumbled at the morning, all but collapsed on the kitchen counter. Luz was just getting ready for school so she could call her friends. Eda didn’t fully understand why she needed to call them before school. She was going to see them soon enough anyway, but whatever. It made the kid happy.
She gave a big yawn, at least attempting to stand up a bit straighter as Luz stumbled into the room.
“Good morning, Eda!”
She grumbled some sort of greeting but Luz hardly even noticed. She was far too busy eating the breakfast that was sat out for her. Eda shook her head, a fond smile on her face. She could put anything out and Luz would eat it. The girl just paid so little attention, she was so eager to meet with her friends. While she ate, Eda got herself some apple blood.
“Eda, can I walk to school with Gus and Willow today?”
She hummed thoughtfully, looking over to the clock, then shrugged.
“I don’t see why not, kiddo.”
But before she had even finished the sentence, Luz was already grabbing her bag to leave. She paused at the door a moment, before running back over to the kitchen and giving her mentor a big hug. It took a moment for Eda to process, but when she did she hugged the girl back. Soon enough, she was rushing for the door again.
“Thanks for breakfast, Eda! Have a good day!” The door slammed shut before Eda could give her own goodbye.
She was putting her mug in the sink when she heard little footsteps running upstairs, then an odd series of thuds that sounded suspiciously like someone falling down the stairs, punctuated by a little squeak. She snorted out a laugh and smirked when King came stumbling into the kitchen, looking around frantically. After a moment of searching, he looked disappointed, body sagging.
“Did Luz leave already?”
“Yeah, she had to leave early.”
“Oh… I wanted to say goodbye before she left.”
He bowed his head, sadly walking to the kitchen table, only struggling a little to get up onto a chair.
“Don’t worry, you have the whole weekend to spend time with her.” Eda tried to encourage him, giving him his own plate of eggs for breakfast. It seemed to help a little bit. At the very least he wasn’t slouching while he ate. Good enough.
Eda gave another yawn.
“Well, I’m gonna go take a nap.”
King looked up at her as she left the room, a look of concern on his face.
“Already?” He asked, hopping off the chair to dash to her side. He clutched at the skirt of her dress, stopping her retreat. “But it’s still early! Are you feeling okay? Is it the curse? Did you take your elixir today?”
Eda huffed, pushing the small demon off herself, forceful but not hard enough to hurt him.
“I’m fine. I took my elixir already and I’m gonna head to the market later to get more. I just..” She gave another yawn. “I just need to nap first.”
She walked on despite King’s protests, collapsing onto the couch and promptly falling asleep. King gave an indignant noise, crossing his arms.
“Fine then! I have my own things to do anyway.” He stomped off only to return a moment later with a blanket. He draped it over Eda, making sure it covered her up. “Okay, now I’m going!” He ran off again.
----------------------------
Morning turned into afternoon without much fuss. Everything was quiet and peaceful, the only sound being King as he assembled his army of stuffed soldiers upstairs and acted the wars to come when he regained his power the occasional annoying sound from Hooty. King found it suspicious. Eda should have made some sort of sound by now, maybe yell about going to the market or bumping around in the kitchen. He should probably go check on her.
He tried to be quiet as he walked downstairs, peering into the living room.
“Oh."
In the middle of the living room was what at first looked like a giant pile of gray feathers. But of course, King quickly realized it wasn’t since it was breathing, it’s massive side rising and falling slowly. That was Eda! She had turned into her owl form after all. Well, at the very least she was still sleeping.
King inched forward ever so slowly, now more than ever needed to keep as quiet as physically possible. He hid behind the couch, trying to get control of his breathing. When he had calmed down at least a little peered out at the giant beast in the middle of the living room. She still slept soundly, so he tried scooting a little closer. Then a little closer. Then even a little more. He managed to get all the way to her face without waking her up.
“Eda?” He asked, voice barely above a whisper. He had to actively restrain himself from bapping her face. As much as it would make him feel better, it would also probably get him killed. The only response to his whisper was a loud snore.
Alright, this was no problem! He just had to get some of her elixirs! Then she would turn back to normal!
He tiptoed out of the room, ever so careful, but once he was in the hallway he ran up the stairs to Eda’s room.
“Alright,” he said to himself, looking around the slightly messy room. “If I was an elixir, where would I be?”
He remembered Eda opening a chest before, so he looked through a couple of chests she had around the room. He gave an irritated huff at every chest that held nothing but books and junk. Then there was only one left. He opened it with a triumphant “Ah-ha!”
It held nothing but empty bottles.
“Oh. That’s not good.”
Looked like Eda was out of her elixir. He remembers she did mention having to go to the market for more earlier. Well, he guessed he would just have to get it for her. It wasn’t like she was in any state to get it herself.
He snuck back downstairs, peering back over the couch at where Eda still slept. She hadn’t moved an inch, snoring away. Maybe he could get to the market and back before she woke up. He definitely needed to get back before Luz returned from school. So, he snuck out the front door, trying to open it without a squeak and close it without a slam.
“Watcha doin’, hoot hoot!”
Hooty’s screech nearly made King jump out of his skin. He turned on the door with a glare and a loud “Sshhhhhh!”
“Eda’s sleeping, don’t wake her up! She turned into her owl form again. I’m heading to the market to get her more of that elixir. Can you keep her in the house?”
“You got it, hoot hoot!”
And as annoying as the owl was, at least he lowered his voice. That would have to do.
King ran all the way to the market. Well, he mostly ran. He had very short legs, after all, so he needed a few breaks. Still, he managed to make good time all things considered. He was at the market within the half-hour. Now he just needed to remember where the elixir stand was…
He spent more time than he would have liked just wandering. He knew what the stand looked like, he even knew what the guy running it looked like. Still, there were a lot of stands, even if he knew the general area.
Finally, he saw the familiar stand not far away. He dashed over, taking a few hops before managing to grab the edge of the counter and climbing up.
“Hey! Potion man! I need your help!”
A young man on the other side of the counter jumped at King’s shouting.
“I’m sorry! Can I help you?”
“Yeah, you can give me Eda’s elixir now before I send my dark armies to destroy you!”
He looked at King for a moment, confused, before something seemed to click into place.
“Oh! You’re Eda’s pet, aren’t you?”
“I am no pet! I am her close friend and confidant! And I’m here to pick up her elixir.”
The man looked upset, glancing to the side before looking back at King.
“I already told Eda, it won’t be ready for another five days!”
“What!!”
“She ordered more two days ago and I told her then that it would be ready in a week. I still need five more days to finish it.”
“But she needs it now!” King said, definitely not whining. The King of Demons did not whine.
“I’m sorry, my hands are tied! You can’t rush these things or the elixir won’t even work.”
King huffed and puffed, stomping his feet before devolving into his scream of rage, a high pitched squeak that made everyone in the nearby area stare and snicker. His tantrum was only stopped when unfamiliar hands picked him up. He struggled in their arms, hitting and kicking anything he could reach.
“Unhand me, fiend! I must destroy this potion man!”
“Why? What’s going on here?”
King calmed down a little bit when he heard the familiar voice, turning in the arms to glare up at their face. Niliana looked down at him, a look of concern and confusion on her face. Perfect! She and Eda were friends or business partners or something, right? She could help!
“I need to get Eda’s elixir from this guy, but he won’t give it to me!” He shouted, crossing his arms and glaring at the man. HE looked and sounded every part a grumpy child not getting his way. At least it was about something important.
“I can’t give it to you, it’s not done yet.” He replied, words slow and emphasized in an attempt to get it across to the small demon.
The older witch looked between the two, took a deep breath, and let out a long sigh.
“Okay, Eda needs this elixir of hers, but it’s not ready yet.”
The man nodded.
“When will it be ready?”
“Five days.”
“Okay. Then we’ll be back in five days.”
“But-” King tried to speak up.
“We’ll be back in five days, right King?”
He huffed and looked away, still very aggravated with the turn of events. Finally, he gave a resigned nod.
“Fine. But it better be ready!”
Niliana gave a little bow to the man and walked away, the grumbling demon still held in one arm. She climbed onto the staff in her other hand and flew off, headed to the forest King had come from. He was thinking so hard he hadn’t even noticed they were flying right away.
“Where’s the house?”
King pointed at the general direction. The few minutes it took to get there were spent in silence.
King had no idea what he was going to do now. Eda had been taken over by her curse. She was an angry monster now with no way to turn her back. What was he going to tell Luz? How were they supposed to handle this over the next five days? He really didn’t know what to think. He wished this had never happened. He just wanted Eda back.
They landed a few feet from the house. King gave a sad little thank, dropping off the staff. For a moment, he just sat there before forcing himself to his feet. Still, he didn’t walk to the house, just looked at it as his worries grew.
He heard the witch behind him shuffle about before sitting next to him.
“King, what’s going on? What does Eda need the elixir for?”
He tried to look angry when he looked up to her, but that was hard to do when he was also trying to fight back tears. He debated whether or not it was even a good idea to tell her, but they really good use her help. He really didn’t want to go back into that house alone.
“Okay, I’ll tell you. But you have to promise not to tell anyone else!”
“I promise.”
“Pinky promise!”
She did so, and that was enough reassurance for King. He told her everything he knew about Eda’s curse, which granted wasn’t much. She was cursed when she was younger and if she doesn’t drink her elixirs she turns into a giant owl monster that attacks anything that moves.
“Which is why I was at the market.” He finished. “Eda’s out so I thought I’d get her some more. Now she’s stuck as a monster and I don’t know what to do!”
Niliana hummed thoughtfully, looking over to the house. After some time she got up, hand clenched around her staff tightly.
“Alright, we can handle this.”
“We can?” King asked, shocked. “You’re going to help us?”
“Of course. I’m not about to just leave you all like this. Someone’s going to get hurt.”
“Thank you!” He shouted, throwing himself at the witch. She managed to catch him in her arm, smiling as he gave her the best hug he could manage. They both looked to those, silent as they thought over what to do next.
Okay, a lot to unload here from TTLGR
🚨 SPOILER WARNINGS🚨
First off, I'm going to start with the main plot line with Gus:
He looks so sad. He tried to help Willow and his confidence in illusion magic is shaken.
Tumblr media
Send these guys to help Willow and it doesn't work out. He so upset with himself, I hate seeing him like this.
Tumblr media
Now, here's where both storylines meet. Luz goes to Gus, being overly affectionate towards him.
"You need my library card to visit Amity, don't you?"
Tumblr media
*Nervous laughter* "I haven't been doing a good job at hiding that." Gus shakes head no.
Tumblr media
I loved it because out of their friend group, I thought Gus wouldn't catch on until Luz and Amity started dating. Anyway...
Getting nervous around Glandis High peeps
Tumblr media
Luz, trying to be a good friend, gives everyone a heart attack, while trying not to pass out. Dedication right there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh boy, her.
Tumblr media
She acted like she was a victim, but she really was the bully. Her true colors came out when she got to the stones. She didn't care about anyone else but herself and now that she had to power, she could do almost anything.
Gus standing up for what is right was great. Matt, also helping Gus out, was good. And the caretaker of the ruins was funny. The "release the hounds" line made me laugh.
Tumblr media
As for the plot line, I enjoyed it. Gus was so upset with his illusion powers, but Matt was able to admit that he was saved because of Gus. And I loved Gus going dark on Bria. It kind of scared me that Gus could get that dark. I still view him as a sweet cinnamon roll. It was good to see him go through a sort of "mid life crisis" because people always question if they are in the right profession (I know I've done that) and they need some outside encouragement from someone else, besides their family and friends.
I can see a Matt redemption arc, but I can also see him be a friend to Gus, but still causes trouble with his peers. I hope he and Gus can become good friends.
Overall, I enjoyed the main plot line. The way the Glandis High students acted was great, thinking they are above everyone else, especially students at Hexside.
Now, onto the part I absolutely loved, the B plot.... Which I'll do posts (yes posts) on that later.
Slumber Party (Part 1)
(Let’s have a little fun with our fluff shall we)
Ask anyone and they’d tell you Eda was a powerful witch, a force to be reckoned with, and downright terrifying when she’s mad. Someone like that could not be tamed, she was wild, she was free, she was wearing an apron and covered in flour.
Truly horrifying, and perhaps just a little on the unexpected side.
Now on the question of how she got into this predicament in the first place. It was simple really. Earlier that day Luz expressed that she’s never had a slumber party, well there was the Moonlight Conjuring but she meant just a typical slumber party without any of that other stuff. And Eda, for some unknown reason that even she herself couldn’t fathom, suggested that maybe it would be okay if Luz wanted to have one.
Cue the young girls squeals of excitement, a little extra dose of that parallel arm thing, and here she was. In the kitchen making cookies for her kid and a few other young witchlings. Why? Well because Luz wanted them of course. Just don’t tell anyone for she still has some semblance of a reputation that she wants to maintain. But gosh darn it why was it so hard to say no to that kid or refuse her anything. Not only that but she was going out of her way to do things without even being asked.
It wasn’t Luz who suggested the slumber party. And Luz didn’t actually ask for the cookies nor was it said that she had to make them, she could have gone out and bought some after she overheard her kid mention them. Just what the heck was going on with her lately.
Before she could continue on that reputation shattering train of thought King came bounding into the kitchen and onto the counter. “Are those cookies I smell?”
She had to smack his paw away after setting the tray down on the counter. “These aren’t for you they’re for the kid, last I check you weren’t one.”
King glared at her as he stomped his little foot. “Demon’s can still enjoy cookies too. As king I demand you give me one!”
Eda rolled her eyes at his antics “sure pipsqueak, keep pretending you’re in a position to make demands.” Her smile was smug but instead of the reaction she expected he looked away and asked for one, even going so far as to say please. And she just didn’t have it in her to refuse, or at least not anymore, what was happening to her.
“Alright just one, the rest are for the kid- at least wait till they cool down!” But it was already too late, he had reached for one and ended up burning his paw which he proceeding to stuff in his mouth as he hopped from one foot to another.
She would have made more comments if it wasn’t for Luz popping up right next to her, effectively startling the witch. “Oooo cookies!” oblivious to King’s predicament the girl also decided to reach for one which I’m sure you can imagine what followed. It took all the strength Eda had not to bang her head against something.
It could have been anyone, literally anyone, but these are the two she got stuck with.
While King continued to cry over most likely nothing, Luz composed herself much faster for she gave Eda a grateful smile. “Did you make these?”
“Yeah, I overheard how you said they were great for parties.” Eda crossed her arms and looked away during her reply. It’s not like it was a big deal.
“Thank you, Eda!” Oh no, here comes another one of those hugs. ‘You know you like them, stop pretending you don’t’  Shut up brain!
“Willow, Gus, and Amity are going to love these!” The young girl’s enthusiasm was contagious as she helped to get the cookies onto a plate before taking them into the living room and setting them on the coffee table. Eda followed to find her living room decorated with pillows and blankets strewn about. On the couch was a huge bowl of popcorn and a few of King’s stuffed animals minions were already sitting there.
“Luz said they could partake too!” The little demon added cheerfully from behind her before climbing up on the couch to grab hold of his favorite minion, Francois. “Tonight we shall make our plan to take over the Isles!” King held the stuffed rabbit over his head as he laughed evilly but quieted a bit when he felt someone petting him.
“No world domination tonight, you little peach, just friends and fun!” His evil laughter turned to cute giggles as Luz picked him up to sit on the couch with him in her lap.
Eda hadn’t realized how soft her expression became until a knock at the door broke her out of her trance. “Some guests have arrived, hoot hoot.” Hooty declared as the door opened on its own. ‘No ****’ was what she wanted to say but there were children present and also this story has a rating to keep.
She crossed the room to find Willow at the door standing between her two dads. “Good afternoon, miss Eda.” The young girl smiled warmly at her and Eda couldn’t help smiling back before directing her attention towards the kids parents.
“Thank you for allowing WIllow to stay over.” commented a dark skinned man with a rather bushy beard. For some reason Eda wanted to ask if he was able to hide things in it too but decided against that. “Willow’s been so excited, it’s not often she gets to do this.” Added the other nerd-looking one with the glasses.
“Dads!” Willow cried out with more than just a hint of embarrassment.
“Sorry sweetie, you know we’re just as happy as you are.” Seems Luz wasn’t the only one who was missing out on a lot. Eda once again smiled at the witchling as she pointed behind her. “Luz is already waiting on the couch, if you’re not careful her and King might finish off all the snacks before you even have a chance to have any.” Well mostly King, Luz would be more preoccupied with being a good host.
The young witch giggled “Thanks again, miss Eda!” She chirped before moving past the older woman to join Luz on the couch. Eda watched her go with a content expression on her face before turning back towards Willow’s dads. The one with the beard was already writing something on a piece of paper.
“If you need anything, anything at all, feel free to scroll us.” Bushy beard handed her the paper while glasses continued talking. “She has this medication she needs to take, she’s usually very good at remembering but could you see that she does just in case?”
“You know what it’s like with kids, when they’re having fun it’s easy to forget everything else.”
For a moment she was taken rather aback with the situation she founded herself in but was quick to compose herself as she shot them a genuine look of understanding. “Of course I will, I promise she’s safe under my roof.” She was simply saying what she would want to hear if it was her dropping Luz off at someone’s house.
It seemed to be enough though for the smiles they shot at her were bright and warm. “Thank you very much, despite your reputation you really are a good person like Willow said.” And just like that the world had to prove she still had heartstrings. How dare that kid spread lies about her.
After waving goodbye, Eda closed the door only for another knock to be heard what felt like seconds later. Since she was right there she opened it herself this time before Hooty could swing himself open and most likely hit her in the face. She wouldn’t be able to guarantee safety under her roof if there wasn’t a house anymore.
Gus stood with his reporter dad and waved rather excitedly at her. “Hi Eda, are Luz and Willow here?” Before Luz she would have found him exhausting but the girl was way worse so she was numb to it now.
“Nope, you just missed them.” She crossed her arms and gave him a toothy grin to which he responded by deflating just a bit. “Of course this would happen.”
The older witch chuckled. “I’m just messing with you kid, go on in.” Eda moved aside to let him pass which he did, rather loudly. She wondered if she was actually gonna get sleep tonight. Then she realized she was allowing a bunch of kids to stay in her house for the night. So no, most likely not.
She heard someone clear her throat before realizing that oh yeah, Gus’ dad was still there. “Thanks for letting him stay over, and uh nice to see you didn’t get petrified.” Oh man he was just as awkward as his son.
“Um, thanks? Is there something else you wanted or can I shut the door now?”
“Yeah, sure. I’m going now, sorry about that.” So that’s where the kid got it from.
She was at least able to make it across the room this time before the door swung open. Hooty didn’t even wait for the knock this time as three kids were left standing with their fists held out.
Two of them, the clearly older ones, laughed. “I’d love to have a door like this someday.” The older girl commented while her brother nodded. “Just imagine all the stuff we could pull off with one.” he added.
The smaller one in the middle frowned as she crossed her arms. “See if I ever visit you.”
“Of course” her older sister began in a singsong voice. “You’d only put up with this kind of torture if it was for~” This prompted a rather red faced Amity to quickly cover her mouth before she said something she’d regret, causing the boy and even Eda to smirk as she made her way towards the door.
“Hey kids.”
“Hi Eda!” The twins said in unison once Amity let Emira go. “We’re just here to drop off our precious baby sister” Emira commented as Edric patted their, growing increasingly frustrated, little sister’s head.
“I could have walked myself.” The witchling growled out but her expression completely changed, which did not go unnoticed by any of the three, when she saw Luz approaching the door.
“Amity!” The human cried out happily as she greatly encouraged the young witch inside. “Hurry, we were just about to start playing a game!”
“I-I’m coming, just hold up already.” Her tone feigned annoyance but in truth she was very happy with any attention from the human. It was adorably amusing.
“So” Emira smirked as she acknowledged the other two with her again. ”Who wants to make bets that something will happen tonight?”
“Psh, together in a house at night? If something didn’t happen I’ll be amazed but also greatly disappointed.” Eda stated before adding. “You’re on kid!”
After all the bets were placed the twins waved goodbye and Eda could finally close the door without worrying about any more guests needing to show up.
Knock knock.
Or so she thought. “Kid, how many people did you invite?”
Luz looked up from their game to count on her fingers. “Let’s see just Willow, Gus, Amity, and-”
“Hello, sister.”
Of all the people Eda expected to see standing there Lilith was not one of them. Heck she would have expected even that Boscha girl more than her own sister. True things were slightly... better, for lack of a better word, between them but now that she wasn’t in the coven she tended to keep to herself in the tower behind their house.
“What are you doing here, Lilith?” She didn’t intend to sound mean or anything, just surprised.
“The human, Luz, invited me to your ‘party’ as she called it.”
Eda looked towards her apprentice with an expression that conveyed she wasn’t mad just, confused and maybe slightly sad. “Why?”
As Luz considered what she’d say for a moment her group of friends watched and waited for her explanation to which she finally just shrugged. “I guess I just thought, it’s been some time since everything happened, why not take little steps towards making things better.” Eda and Lilith considered what the girl had to say as she continued. “Whether we like it or not Lilith is gonna be with us now. She’s powerless she can’t go anywhere else. It took awhile and I still don’t know if I forgive her... But I think it’s okay to start letting her back in little by little.”
Silence ruled the house as Lilith looked towards the human gratefully, so that’s what her younger sister saw in her. Finally Eda turned towards Lilith with a sigh. “Luz is right, you’re welcome to stay if you wish.”
“Perhaps for just a little while, I won’t overstep my boundaries.” They gave each other small smiles before Eda directed her towards the couch. She then fixed her kid with a stare as she held the door open. “Now is there anyone else I have to worry about? Did you invite the emperor too?”
“Well” Luz joked causing Eda to roll her eyes. “Kid, if it wasn’t for all these people I would have thrown you outside by now.”
“Nah, you love me too much.”
“A fact I’m starting to regret.” The others chuckled at the Owl Lady’s comment as she closed the door, finally.
Walking over towards the group she saw Luz rise up from her spot with a start. “Oh gosh, I forgot the drinks.”
“Hey kiddo, it’s okay I’ll get them” Eda ruffled Luz’s hair. “You just have fun with your friends.” To that Luz wrapped her arms around Eda’s neck and nuzzled against her cheek with a “Thank you!” She was always dramatic with her appreciation that way. But instead of complaining Eda held her back for just a moment before letting go and dropping her on the floor. “Affection, gross.”
“Just you wait, one of these days I’ll get you to stop pretending that you don’t like it.”
“Sure kid, whatever you say.” Eda turned to her sister with a slightly cautious look. “Would you mind helping me?”
“Not at all.” Came the quick reply as the two older women made their way into the kitchen leaving the kids, and King, alone.
Most had soft smiles on their faces as if they just saw the cutest thing ever. Amity’s face was the same as ever but there was a bit of red to it, she was the only one not looking in Luz’s direction.
“Okay, now who’s ready for truth or dare?” Luz asked, to which Gus responded by raising his hand and asking what that is.
I will say, I am hungry again and I have a few ask for your Willumity/Vinira headcannons. HOWEVER to be fair to you. This time I will restrain myself and simply ask for you to share any headcanons you want to share as of now!
You can ALWAYS ask for more Willumity.
A L W A Y S
But!! Since you’ve given me free reign to just play in this sandbox, that’s exactly what I’m gonna do
We all agree that Luz is hella ADHD. This girl will talk for HOURS about the shit she likes. If something grabs her attention, she wants to know everything about it. She doesn’t like being told to do things, but she loves being asked to do things. For example: if someone tells her she needs to do a thing her brain will immediately click into the “No” position and will refuse to budge. If someone asks her to do something, her brain clicks to “help? I can help? I can help with a thing for this person? Yes! I’ll help this person with this task because it will make them happy! Yes! I can help!” This is why acts of service resonate so strongly with her.
I don’t know what mental diversity looks like on the Boiling Isles considering how just. Horror-based everything is? But I’m 100% on that autistic Amity train. She has to do things a Certain Way or she’ll teeter on the edge of a meltdown. She refuses to touch/eat certain textures. She usually doesn’t know what the appropriate response/reaction is to a given conversation, especially with her socialite friends, which is why she just remains a cool mask of indifference. She’ll inspect every detail of anything that’s handed to her. She’s incredibly smart, but doesn’t always know how to convey what she knows and understands into words other people can understand. The only people allowed in her personal space are her siblings. Eventually that also stems to Luz and Willow, maybe more as she grows more comfortable with herself? But usually anyone getting in her space is overwhelming and alarming. Defo has a hard time regulating/processing her emotions.
I need to make an entire post dedicated to Augustus Porter because my boy deserves it, but I’ll toss some random things here. He has a signed poster from the head of the Illusionist Coven framed on his bedroom wall. He and his dad have bi-weekly after-dinner standup comedy sessions with each other (Perry has kept a secret journal of all of Gus’s best jokes he’s done over the years that he reads whenever he needs a pick-me-up).
Perry and Eda knew each other in school in passing. Their social circles overlapped but they were never hanging out in the same groups. When Gus is very little (like, maybe 3 or 4?), Perry takes him to the market to just wander around and they find Eda’s Human Collectibles Stand. She and Perry catch up, he introduces her to his son, and Eda (ever the saleswoman) pulls out some shiny human thing that Gus is immediately taken with. In between her and Perry catching up, Gus asks her a million questions about the thing he’s been given and then even more questions about other stuff at her stand. She actually finds it really fun to show off her human shit to someone so enthralled by it. She makes some stuff up here and there just to mess with him, but he’s too young to realize it’s a joke or not true, and takes everything at face value. We all know Eda likes to get a little theatrical with her sales pitches; she does the Salesperson act with everything Gus asks her about. She lets Gus take a couple items home just because he was such a riot and Perry insists he pay for something, but Eda just waves them off and tells him that this is just an investment in a lifelong customer. She had no idea how right she was because Gus defo became obsessed with human culture from that point on. He also picked up on Eda’s super theatrical sales pitches (because he thought it was funny and because he thought that’s just how you’re supposed to show human stuff to people) and began showing off his own “human collectibles museum” to his dad with the same theatrical voice. Perry plays along with this too (as a news anchor he’s got a great announcer voice) and ta-da! That’s how we get the boy we all know and love today. It’s 100% Eda’s fault, but Perry definitely encouraged it because it made his son so happy. That’s also why Gus doesn’t seem especially perturbed at meeting Eda for the first time in ep 3. Or for interjecting his new Human Knowledge in the moment she was patting Luz’s head. He’s used to having conversations with her about human junk whenever she has her stand up. Eda’s secretly relieved that one of Luz’s new friends is actually someone she kinda knows. It’s Perry’s kid, and Perry’s a good guy. His little squirt seems to be growing up to be pretty good too.
Eda scoffs at “nerdy” shit as if she hasn’t owned the Clawthorne Braincell her entire life. “She worked twice as hard” “-that just made me work harder than you!”. Eda’s extremely smart and extremely talented. She likely created the secret room of shortcuts entirely on her own. She probably studied in the school library constantly, but under the guise of causing mischief. And like. She probably did both. She was a potions track kid so she probably knew all the best ways to make stink bombs that she could leave hidden in the shelves. She hated school because she was so limited and stifled; she only wanted to learn magic and was told no at every turn. So when she learned magic on her own, yknow, without the guidance of a teacher, there’s bound to be some major fuck ups. Once she’s fine-tuned her mistakes though, she absolutely turns them into pranks. You say I’m not allowed to study multiple tracks, bumpikins?? Well how’s THIS!!! How’s THAT for focus??? (Half of her pranks were also just her showing off and desperately hoping to prove that she could learn any type of magic and couldn’t be constrained to just the one. Bump recognized this of course, but he had strict guidelines to follow and no Luz Noceda to call him out for it.)
Camila treasures her daughter more than life itself. I personally refuse to headcanon anything to do with her extended family or why she’s a single parent (too many variables and options that could be addressed in the show), but I do know that she loves Luz more than anything. It’s exhausting being a single mom, working as a nurse, and trying to be there for her ADHD daughter when the rest of the world doesn’t seem to want her. It hurts her so much to see her baby, the light of her life, her Luz, be brushed aside and written off as “the weirdo”, or bullied, or even outright hated by some people just because she’s a little different. She’s had to have some words with the school staff for how they treat her on occasion. Did you see that Principal’s death glare in the first ep?? He hates her. Camila’s there not just because she’s Luz’s parent, but also to act as a barrier between the principal and Luz. She would move Heaven and Earth for Luz, but it can be a lot when you’re the only adult around. I truly believe she wanted Luz to go to that camp to learn how to be friends with kids that didn’t already know her or her quirks. Even she sounded unsure of what they would do at that camp, but she had full faith that this would be Luz’s opportunity to make friends with other kids that could teach her to like....more mainstream stuff. So she could learn how to mimic their (hopefully, toned down) behaviors. She just wants her baby to be accepted by others.
This next one’s a doozy so hold on to your butts
Lilith is technically smart. And I mean that in a literal sense - she can read and understand the fundamentals of magic, the concepts and execution of complex spells, recite entire chapters of Boiling Isles history, you name it. Many adults in her youth called her gifted because of it. All she actually did was absorb the information and regurgitate it when asked. She thrived on the praise she received. What made her different from her sister is that she never wanted anything more than to do as she was told. Her biggest goal? Her dream job? Was to just be given orders by the Emperor. I’m sure there’s all sorts of flowery propaganda surrounding that, advertising how incredible it is to be in the Emperor’s Coven, what an honor it is to work alongside the witch that can speak to the Titan. But it’s literally just. Taking orders. And knowing you’re somehow better than everyone else because you’ve been selected to be among the elite. She never strived for anything more; she never wanted to do anything else but enforce the Emperor’s will because that was “the highest honor” a witch could have. As a result (or in conjunction rather) she lacks literally any amount of foresight. There’s only one braincell in the Clawthorne Family and her sister has it because this dumbass doesn’t think about anyone but herself. Instead of talking with Eda about what they should do when they were told there was only one spot left in the Emperor’s Coven, she walked away. Only thinking of how she could secure her victory. She didn’t ask Eda how she felt about the situation, she didn’t let Eda speak her mind about what her own desires were; Eda made it clear enough that she just wanted to be by Lilith’s side, she didn’t care what that meant. She just wanted to be with her big sister. Eda tried to reach out to her to discuss their cirumstances, but Lilith just walked away like the broody, self-centered teenager that she was and resolved to cheat her way to victory. When Eda knew this was her dream. Why would she think Eda would take away her dream???? She could’ve asked Eda to throw the duel? She could’ve asked her to fake the match? Or even fake sick? Or just not even shown up! If she didn’t show up it could’ve counted as a forfeit and Lilith would’ve earned the spot by default! But no, she had to ruin her sister’s entire life in an act of cowardice and dishonor because she’s so full of herself and didn’t read the fine print. She loves her sister, of course she does, but she’s so self-absorbed that she’s never seen Eda for who she actually is and wasted both of their lives as a result. And this is all just analysis of her character and that flashback, this isn’t even headcanons. I think if she has any amount of respect for her sister (she doesn’t), her redemption will have to go far far beyond an apology and taking on half the curse. When I say Lilith is a dumbass, this is specifically what I mean. She doesn’t think about how her actions will affect those around her. She was the Head of the Emperor’s Coven, literally one of the most powerful positions she could possibly be in on the Boiling Isles and still sacrificed Amity’s dignity and years of hard work just so she could be ensured that she could one-up her sister. She did this in front of everyone in attendance of that Witches Duel. She risked Amity’s credibility as a witch, as a Blight, and as a person just to fuel her own ego. It’s no wonder Amity was so upset; the witch she’s been idolizing her whole life didn’t think she had what it took to best a human that couldn’t do magic in a witches duel. That can fuck up your self esteem something fierce. And Lilith hardly seemed to give a shit!!!! She didn’t care that she just trashed Amity’s reputation in front of dozens of spectators!!!! I’m v bitter about Lilith as a character in case you couldn’t tell.
If I had to throw a headcanon in, I’ll toss one in that sterling and I have discussed: Lilith literally doesn’t know how to live her life as an independent adult. Sure, she knows how to like. Make herself some easy dinners? But that’s literally only because she used to make herself and Eda dinners when they were kids. Beyond that, she has no fucking idea. She can do the basic household chores any teenager knows how to do, but she’s lived in the Emperor’s Castle with the rest of the Coven since she joined. It’s kind of like living in a college dorm; food and a room is provided, there’s maybe a laundry service, she’s never had to pay taxes in her life (not that Eda does, but yknow). The only things she buys for herself (if she doesn’t make it herself) is her hair dye and books. When she first moves in to the Owl House, she has no idea how the household chores are done. She’s on House Cleaning Duty Eternally and the first......I’ll say year. Eda will wake her up by banging pots and pans over her head once every month and scream-singing about how it’s House Cleaning Day, pull out her lawn chairs and some lemonade, and she and Luz (and sometimes King) will just sit back and relax and watch the show that is Lilith trying to clean Hooty. Hooty does not like to cooperate with her (partially because Lilith is a special friend and partially because he knows how much joy it brings Eda and Luz to watch her struggle).
Oof I could go on but this is already one hell of a post huh? Sorry (not really) for dragging Lilith so hard; not a joke, tumblr made me split hers up into two bullet points because it couldn’t comprehend my ranting for so long in one bullet point. I do love sharing these with y’all though, they’re so much fun and I’m so glad you guys like my rambling. <3333
From Understanding Willow to Agony of a Witch
           I think Understanding Willow is in some ways foreshadowing to Agony of a Witch, as well as the flashback in Young Blood, Old Souls; Specifically Amity, and the way she handles hurting her close friend Willow, and how that parallels how Lilith hurt Eda…
           The first time Amity hurts Willow, both herself AND Willow are being threatened here. In Agony of a Witch, Belos threatens to kill Lilith by the end of the day if she doesn’t deliver Eda to him; Not only that, but Lilith has been told by Belos that he’ll cure Eda of her curse if she does so. Lilith knows the curse is worsening, that Eda hates it and wants it gone- And we also know from Eda herself that it’s going to deliver her to a ‘fate worse than death’.
           Amity is being threatened by her own parents, which- It’s asking a LOT for an abused kid to stand up to that. But not only that, Willow’s chances at Hexside are directly threatened, and Amity couldn’t imagine ruining Willow’s academic future! And while I doubt Willow would’ve enjoyed losing her chance at Hexside; I feel like had she known the full context, she wouldn’t have valued enrollment at the school THAT much, just as Eda hates the curse, but isn’t willing to have it cured if it means joining Belos. Amity and Lilith make this sort of choice for their loved one, without really telling them or giving them any agency in it; Likely because it hurts a lot for them to admit that the person they’re serving is terrible. For Lilith, she’d be admitting to Eda that yes, Belos IS a tyrant that she’s been serving; And Amity, she’s an abused kid, and I imagine it’s super uncomfortable to admit what her parents are like to anyone, even her best friend.
           Then in the present-day, Amity goes behind Willow’s back to burn her memory photo; And while I can see her having some semblance of altruism behind the act, ultimately it was done in selfish motive, possibly to preserve Amity’s friendship with Luz, for fear that Luz would judge her after hearing how Amity broke ties with Willow. When Lilith and Eda had to duel to join the Emperor’s Coven, Lilith also goes behind Eda’s back to curse her; And while I’m sure she also justified it in her head with the idea of Eda being so talented that she could join the Emperor’s Coven another time anyway (just as Amity could’ve reasoned that Willow wouldn’t want this painful memory), it was still done for selfish reasons.
           Lilith wanted to join the Emperor’s Coven… And she cast a curse that should’ve been way more simple, way less disastrous, than it actually was; Just like how Amity burned the memory photo, and only expected THAT photo to burn; But then the rest did, starting a process that would’ve destroyed Willow’s mind, while also igniting (ba-dum tsss) some very powerful grief and rage within her former friend. Both Lilith and Amity acted selfishly to harm their loved one, believing the actual effects would be way less than what they ended up being… And unlike Amity, Lilith wasn’t able to undo the damage.
           (It’s also worth noting that Lilith didn’t have a ‘Luz’ to guide her, to tell her that what she did was wrong; While also providing Lilith the opportunity and support to fix the actual problem. I just think that’s important to remember when it comes to this show’s themes of loneliness and how that can really effect one’s relationships and handling of issues.)
           Of course, Lilith and Amity also contrast as well, as they’re not exact copies of one another; Lilith’s selfish decision came in the past, Amity’s in the present; With Lilith’s more forced decision happening in the present, while Amity’s occurred in the past. Lilith’s second mistake was in some ways done to remedy what she’d done; While Amity’s was to hide what she did. In Understanding Willow, we’re led to assume the worst of Amity, but then find out the story was more nuanced than we were led to believe; While with Lilith, we’re led to believe that she’s trying to cure her sister out of the goodness of her heart, and she IS… But then we learn that she’s also fixing a problem that shecaused. Amity’s actions are re-contextualized as more sympathetic, whilst Lilith’s become much darker.
           However, even though Amity’s side of the story DOES make her rejection of Willow come across as a lot less cruel and painful, and in some ways altruistic… It was still bad. And I think that’s interesting, that Amity recognizes that it’s valid to tell her side of the story regarding what happened, to at least get that out of the way; But she also acknowledges that it hardly excuses what she did, that Amity still messed up and she has to change her behavior to fix things. While Inner Willow does briefly calm down and reconsider everything that happened with the new information, Amity still makes a point that she still failed Willow in ways she didn’t need to; And that she needs to make up for what she’s done, apologize, and change her behavior.
           Amity never suggests nor insinuates that Willow should be grateful, that Willow should forgive her- If anything, Amity resists telling the truth, possibly because she refuses to defend herself. Amity thinks that what she did to Willow was so deplorable that it doesn’t need an explanation, because that wouldn’t change what she did. But in the end, Amity tells the truth- Possibly because she’s learning to vouch for herself with Luz’s encouragement… But mostly, I imagine, because Amity knows that Willow deserves closure as part of the healing process. That even if Amity was doing what seemed like the best decision at the time, Willow still deserves to know the truth, just to give her that peace of mind.
           This is different from Lilith, who refuses to tell Eda about why she cursed her sister, about why she’s willing to take Luz hostage; Likely out of more cowardice, but also some degree of pride. Again, Lilith probably doesn’t want to admit that her revered Emperor is actually a terrible person for threatening her, to Eda’s face. Lilith never explains her side of the story to give Eda some comfort, that at least Lilith had to be forced to do this; And she definitely doesn’t explain why the curse happened, for plenty of selfish reasons, alongside potentially not wanting to hurt Eda with that kind of knowledge of betrayal. When Lilith DOES initially confess, she does so out of spite; While Amity does it out of a sense of care.
           Then there’s Lilith explaining her side of the story a second time, regarding why she cursed Eda; And while she tells it to Luz (because Eda isn’t there), it at least gives closure to the girl, who can later pass it on to Eda if Lilith can’t. It reassures Luz that Lilith isn’t THAT terrible, that she did mean well, or at least not nearly as terribly- And thus she can be counted on for wanting to fix her mistakes.
           In short, Understanding Willow foreshadows Agony of a Witch, in that both episodes have a witch who’s forced to hurt their loved one, under duress of both themselves AND their loved one. Lilith and Amity both thought they were doing the best possible option in that scenario, while also protecting the loved one they were hurting; But in the end, they still caused pain, and neither Eda nor Willow owe them forgiveness. Similarly, Lilith and Amity don’t want to admit their side of the story, because it means acknowledging that they’re unhappy, that they’re being forced to do this and lack agency; And it involves admitting to others that the people they look up to in their lives, are actually terrible.
           There’s also foreshadowing to Lilith’s flashback in Young Blood, Old Souls; And how an explanation shouldn’t detract from the apology… After Lilith confesses, she briefly insinuates (whether or not she believes it or if she’s just doing damage control) that her explanation would make Eda less hurt, and in many ways that makes sense… But it’s also clearly done because Lilith believes that Eda will be more inclined to forgive her, while with Amity, she doesn’t seem to expect much, if any sympathy… Lilith seems to hope that additional context will make Eda less hurt; But Amity knows that while Willow deserves context, she also deserves an actual change in behavior, whilst Lilith continues with trying to capture Eda, and even threatens Luz’s life to do so.
           Lilith realizes this, and that’s why in Young Blood, Old Souls, she both gives her a long-due explanation for the curse, and THEN follows up by actually changing her behavior; Helping Luz rescue Eda. Because even if context is needed, it doesn’t make up for an apology; Actual changed behavior is also needed. When Lilith realized she first cursed Eda, she tried to change her behavior initially by finding a cure, but she didn’t tell the truth. Then when Lilith told the truth about the curse, she didn’t change her behavior and kept using Luz as a hostage, while trying to capture Eda; Only by doing both, by telling the truth AND changing her behavior, did Lilith begin to make things right with Eda. Now she’s begun to reconnect with her sister after so long… Thereby providing a happiness and closure that was long-due.
            These similarities make sense, Lilith and Amity ARE narrative parallels after all! By the end of the day, they recognize that they still irreparably hurt a loved one, and shouldn’t expect them to be grateful that they didn’t hurt them as much as they could have; ‘For your own good’ does not justify hurting a loved one, even if that motive does provide more nuance and closure, as well as a reassurance that they weren’t hurt pointlessly, needlessly- At least, that was not the intention. Because knowing what happened and explaining yourself, let’s that person know they weren’t hurt for no reason, and that if there’s good intent behind actions; That good intent can be repurposed to be actually constructive, helpful, meaningful! Because they DO want to help, really, and they need guidance on how to do so- They’re not someone acting with planned malice, the way ‘jerks who want to debate aren’t coming from a place of intellectual honesty’, as Luz would put it!
           And ultimately, I think it plays a role into why Eda will sometimes explain, upon questioning by Luz, her own thought process behind certain unusual ideas or teaching methods, as a reassurance that she DOES care and want the best… Which in turn shows Luz that Eda is willing to respond to criticism, because she’s acting in good faith, or trying to- And that means Luz feels safe to voice her own ideas, because she knows that Eda will legitimately take them into account, this time really, for Luz’s own good. It’s an open, honest communication, and showing that your loved one’s input really did have an impact. It’s why I think Lilith and Amity could really benefit to learn from Eda, because if they’d been more open and honest with those they cared about, been willing to reach out and admit that they need help- A LOT of issues could’ve been avoided. And while sometimes it can be too little, too late; Oftentimes it’s better late, than never.
Hi I’m a fan of your idea of Gus moving to Glandus and becoming friends with Bria and the boys in the process. I saw the scene you did of how though the looking glass ruins and couldn’t help but think of two questions. One is Angmar okay because he seems to replace willow in that scene and she got her arm broken in the original episode. And two who gets this AU’s version of Matt’s speech that helps to boost Gus’s sprites before he puts the smack down on the others.
So, first things first, yes, Angmar probably got hurt. Maybe not enough to break his arm, but definitely enough for Gus to feel bad about it. But like Willow, I'm sure he'll get better soon enough.
For the second question, I'm still not entirely sure how TTLGR would play out in this universe, because the initial conditions are very different (especially if Angmar isn't there.):
In one version, Gus initially doesn't join in on the adventure and instead joins Luz on her research quest, encouraged by his new friends (who might secretly agree with Mattholomule about him not being the adventure type). But of course, without him, they fail to defeat the graveyard keeper. Maybe Gus comes in to save them instead? And I guess Luz might give him a pep talk before, while also trying to hype herself up to fix things with Amity.
In another version, he joins in. Matt spends all day trying to convince everyone that Gus is useless and shouldn't be here in the first place, with Bria slowly getting fed up, because Matt is working against her. When they find out it's a graveyard, Bria actually convinces Gus to take her side (because she knows him and because Gus knows Glandus). But Matt wants him gone and knows the best way to do that is to appeal to his morals and get him to stand up to Bria. So in a way, Matt still gives him a pep talk.
(Because I want him to stay friends with the Glandus kids, I'd probably go with option one.)
Lumity Month 2020 Day 10 - Free Day (Luz is bad at flirting)
Sorry I know this is late again. Here’s day 10 of @thekitsune‘s @lumity-month! This story just came to me yesterday and just went from there. It might not be the best but still I hope you all enjoy it and once again thank you all!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Luz was at school standing around a corner looking at Amity, who was by her locker while biting her lip because she was nervous about the day. She had decided that today was the day she was going to confess to Amity.
Luz always knew she thought Amity was cute since she saw even though Amity was being mean to Willow at the time. But then she got to know the witch and saw that she put up a front and was actually nice.
Then one day at Luz found herself wanting to make Amity smile, hear her laugh and beautiful voice talk to her, impress her, and even hold her close. To say Luz freaked out was an understatement. Thankfully, she had Willow and Gus to help her and give her advice.
“You’ve got this, Luz.” Gus tried to encourage his friend.
“Yeah, just go up and talk to her. I’m sure things will go better than you expect.” Willow said in a reassuring tone.
“Okay, thanks you two!” Luz said grinning before taking a deep breath and started to head to Amity.
“Hey, Amity,” Luz said walking up to Amity and leaning on a locker.
“Oh! Hi, Luz, is there something you need?” Amity asked blushing as she turned to Luz.
“Just wondering how this one cute girl is doing?” Luz asked with a wink.
“Well, why don’t you ask her?” Amity said confused and a little hurt that Luz thought someone else was cute.
Luz’s hand slipped off the locker and she almost fell to the floor surprised Amity didn’t catch her attempt at flirting. “Oh, well then, how are you doing?” Luz asked hoping that the witch would realize that she was flirting.
“I’m good but I have to go before class starts. I’ll see you later. Good luck with finding that cute girl.” Amity said with a small smile hoping that Luz wouldn’t see the hurt in her eyes as she turned away and headed toward her class.
“But… You’re the cute girl…” Luz said quietly to herself as she watched Amity leave.
‘This might be harder than I thought…’ Luz thought to herself before sighing.
The next time Luz saw Amity it was at lunch and thankfully the Latina had Willow and Gus there as encouragement.
“Hey, Amity! Remember me? Oh, that’s right, I’ve met you only in my dreams.” Luz said with a wink and finger guns as the witch sat down.
Amity looked at the witch-in-training completely confused. “Luz, we got to school together and literally see each other every day. We were just talking this morning.” Amity replied.
Luz blushed and chuckled nervously, “Oh, right… Sorry…” Luz said looking down before going back to her food.
Willow gave her friend a look of understanding before patting her back. She felt bad that Amity seemed to not notice when Luz was trying to flirt.
After lunch as the group split up and went to their own classes Luz suddenly tripped. Amity seeing this stopped to help her up.
“Thanks, Amity. By the way, do you have a bandage? Cause I scraped my knee falling for you.” Luz grinned hoping that Amity would take the hint.
“Yeah, here you go. You should really watch your step.” Amity said as she reached into her pocket and handed the bandage to Luz with a soft smile and chuckle.
“Okay, I will keep that in mind,” Luz said disappointed as she watched Amity walk away.
It was like this all day for Luz like when classes switched, and she saw Amity she decided to try another pick-up line.
“Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk by again?” Luz said with a smirk as she walked in front of Amity.
“Luz, the first time I saw you, you were an abomination,” Amity said with a giggle that made Luz’s heart skip a beat.
“Right… Well then, can you touch my hand? I want to tell my friends I’ve been touched by an angel.” Luz asked trying her hardest to get Amity to recognize that she was flirting.
“I’m a witch though,” Amity answered wondering what was wrong with Luz today she was acting weirder than usual all day long.
Luz laughed a little at Amity’s words. “Yeah, that’s right, sorry.” She said shyly.
Before Luz knew it, school was over with and she still hadn’t confessed her feelings. When she was back at the Owl House Luz decided to message Amity on her scroll that Eda had recently bought her even though it was low on battery. Maybe Amity would notice her flirting through a text message.
“I have 4 percent battery remaining. I chose to message you. Did I choose wisely? ;)” Luz added the winking face hoping Amity would pick up on the playful tone.
Suddenly the scroll buzzed making her heart race when she saw the message was from Amity. But when she read the message sighed frustrated.
“Why don’t you charge your scroll then?” Was the reply she got from Amity. However right before she replied Luz got another message from the girl that made her smile.
“But if you are wanting to hang out with someone, I’m at my hideout in the library. Feel free to come by if you want.” Was what the message said.
Luz quickly sent a reply saying that she was on her way there. This was her last chance to confess to Amity today and she wasn’t going to let this chance pass by. Now Luz was standing outside the hideout and knocked waiting patiently for Amity to open the door. Amity opened the door and let Luz in before closing it back and sitting back down at her desk while Luz went to sit on her favorite beanbag chair.
Luz decided to use the last pick up line she could think of when she looked at Amity.
“You know, it’s handy I have my library card because I’m totally checking you out,” Luz said with a grin and a wink complete with finger guns.
Amity looked at the girl confused once again, “But I’m not a book…” She said with a small frown.
Luz groaned in frustration before flopping back. “No, you’re not…” She sighed as she closed her eyes.
“Luz, what’s wrong? You’ve been acting and saying weird things all day. You can tell me what’s wrong if need be.” Amity said concerned as she sat on the ground next to Luz.
Luz sighed again before sitting up and looking down at her hands as she fiddled with her thumbs. She might as well just be honest about her flirtations.
“Well… You see, all day I have been trying to flirt with you.” Luz said with a shy smile and blush.
“What?” Amity looked at the human in shock.
‘The reason Luz was acting strange all day was that she was trying to flirt with me. But if she was flirting with me than that must mean that she likes…’ Amity thought as her cheeks turned bright red at the thought.
“Yeah, I like you and would love to be your girlfriend, but I completely understand if you don’t feel the same way,” Luz said as her eyes met Amity’s with a small blush.
“I feel the same way! I mean, I would love to be your girlfriend. I’m sorry I didn’t notice you were flirting. I’m… not the best at noticing those kinds of things.” Amity’s said with a shy smile while Luz just grinned in return.
“It’s okay. I should have just said it instead but at least I was able to in the end. Now I have a beautiful girlfriend.” Luz said before giving Amity a quick kiss on the cheek.
Amity giggled at her girlfriend and the two decided to spend the rest of the day reading and studying just happily enjoying each other’s company.
First time watching ToH S1E15 (Understanding Willow). Thoughts below:
Detailed thoughts:
OH GOD THIS EPISODE I’M FEELING SO MANY EMOTIONS ;_;
There’s a lot to unpack here and I’m not sure if I’m ready to tackle any of it.
I guess it’s time for another installation of the Psychoanalysis of Amity Blight. This episode really helps tie everything together regarding Amity’s backstory prior to the start of the series. As I feared, Amity comes from an influential family of witches w/ parents that only care about her as much as she reflects the family name.
Amity’s parents reject the idea of her befriending anyone who isn’t magically gifted, forcing her to break up w/ her best friend to her face, AT HER OWN BIRTHDAY PARTY, and forces her to be friends w/ the children of other influential witches that they work with.
 It’s almost guaranteed that her parents are the reason why Amity wants to join the EC and why she’s been working so hard to do so. That, and as the youngest, Amity likely spent her entire childhood being compared to Ed and Em, who’re seen by everyone except herself as perfect (Amity says she’s the only one that knows they’re not), trying just as hard to perform as well as them.
Amity doesn’t care about her ‘friends’, Boscha and Skara, since she’s only forced to hang out w/ them bc of her parents trying to tie their family closer together w/ other influential witches.
The only way Amity is able to get by is by acting stoic, putting up walls b/w herself and others to keep herself from “showing weakness”, a defensive measure (or more appropriately, a coping mechanism) that she’s had to adopt due to her parent’s strict rules and her sibling’s off-and-on bullying. Her only solace and place she can express herself is through literature It’s telling that one of her favorite childhood books is Otabin.
Even still, Amity tries to help Willow in any way that doesn’t involve her directly standing up for her (‘encouraging’ her to improve, her abomination complementing her, and going before Willow’s presentation to avoid her getting more homework.
When Luz apologized to Amity at the Covention and saw her demonstrate her glyph magic, Amity was taken aback by the fact that someone like Luz was still trying to connect w/ her even as she kept trying to push her away like she did w/ Willow, and eventually, Luz broke through to her.
I imagine that it’s her perseverance that Amity admires about Luz, seeing Luz commit to her own dreams no matter how many challenges come up, no matter how many times others tell her its impossible. I’m sure Amity wishes she could be as strong as Luz, to be able stand up to her own situation and act for herself, choosing what she wants and not what others want for her. I imagine that’s also the reason why Amity loves Good Witch Azura.
While there’s certainly a lot more to talk about w/ Amity due to how elusive and defensive she can be, this is episode is about understanding Willow, so let’s talk about her.
Confirming what’s been suggested in previous episodes, Willow isn’t from an influential family of witches. Instead, she’s from an ordinary middle-class family w/ two dads that work for a living. Amity’s parents likely tolerated Amity’s friendship w/ her until they could determine Willow’s initial level of magical skill.
Both Amity and Willow attempt to bury their memories, but while Amity still privately regrets her treatment of Willow, Willow resents it. As seen in the first episode w/ the two of them. Inner Willow’s manifestation as a fire monster isn’t as surprising considering that Willow lost control of herself back then too.
While Amity walls herself off from her feelings, Willow lets hers boil over. I can’t fault Willow for that, given that constant bullying by Boscha and Skara bully that Amity let happen in front of her, but I also understand, given her family situation, why Amity never intervened either. Fortunately, it seems that Amity and Willow have learned to confront their own feelings and can find healthier ways of processing their experiences.
General thoughts:
I wish I had magic nail polish! Or magic makeup in general. It would be nice to cast a spell and have all that done for you.
So is Boscha going to become the main antagonist for future Hexside plots? I wonder how her relationship with Amity will change now that Amity is friends w/ Luz.
We got names for the full trio! Amity, Boscha, and Skara.
Is Skara younger than Amity and Boscha? She is shorter than them. Either way, it narrows down the characters’ age range.
Teachers are as useful for resolving fights in the Boiling Isles as they are in the human world.
Ayyo, Willow-focused episode?
Memory photos? First, that’s rad as hell. Second, I have a feeling that we’re going to see Amity and Willow’s backstory through them.
Skara manages to surprise Amity w/ her personal question, breaking Amity’s stoic facade that she keeps up to avoid “showing weakness.”
I change my mind. I no longer like memory photos.
Amity didn’t always have minty hair? Also, first look at Willow’s parents! And she’s got double dads!
What the hell happened b/w them?! How is Amity burning out Willow’s memory of her something she ‘has’ to do? Why does Amity still feel the need to apologize to her?
OH NO OH NO OH NO OH NO
Okay side note I guess, Gus found a new club, Hexside Free Press. Anyway, back to panicking! OH NO NO NO NO
Are we not getting a B plot either? We’re five minutes in and I haven’t seen the setup for one yet.
Thank GOD that Eda’s here.
So we’re getting a mind exploration episode?
Well played on Eda’s part guilting out who damaged Willow’s memories.
Oh! Gus’ interview is the B plot.
Amity looks so unsure taking Luz’s hand ;-;
We’re going to get a lot about Willow and Amity this episode. Already we know Amity spent the holidays at Willow’s, they went to Lake Lacuna (Hole Lake?) to get swimming lessons, and built a fort there together.
Man, Amity is just telling Luz everything about her past w/ Willow! I guess at this point, there isn’t anything to hide.
Willow played hooky? Wait, Willow was going to protect them w/ magic? I thought Amity stopped hanging out w/ Willow after she got her powers and Willow didn’t?
Maybe what Willow meant by their powers coming in is that Amity started getting good at magic while she didn’t.
Amity looks so offended at Luz’s “great bloomer” pun.
Is that photo from Willow’s birthday? That’d explain that scene w/ Skara handing out birthday party invitations at the start of the episode.
Fire monster!
Hooty’s the secret c:
Who will Gus interview, Eda the Owl Lady or the King of Demons?
Boscha was on the Roller Ghoster at the same time as Willow and Amity? I’m guessing they didn’t know each other then if Amity’s trying to keep her old friendship a secret.
Amity’s actually admitting that she messed up! OH SHE’S SMILING AND BLUSHING ;v;
Is Inner Willow the fire monster?
Gus is also a theater kid confirmed.
Amity’s getting really defensive after bringing up that memory again, especially considering how relaxed and open she’s been w/ Luz.
GDI Gus.
Luz is such a quick thinker!
HUG THEY’RE HUGGING SHE’S BLUSHING OMG ;v;
AMITY’S TOTALLY CRUSHING ON LUZ THAT’S WHY SHE WAS PACING AND TALKING TO HERSELF ABOUT HER
Willow’s scary.
OH NO IT’S AMITY’S BIRTHDAY PARTY THERE’S AN EC POSTER SHE KEPT WILLOW FROM GOING TO HER BIRTHDAY PARTY
AMITY’S PARENTS WTF
I KNEW IT AMITY DOESN’T CARE ABOUT HER ‘FRIENDS’
SAME LUZ, SAME ;_;
HOOTY! IT’S ALL COMING UP HOOTY!
“Oh right, I put people in there.”
