Huh... Did Amity make these gadgets, using her expertise passed down from Alador? We do see her tinker with her tamagotchi...
I guess these devices are made as some attempt to detect Titan’s blood and/or contact those in the Demon Realm; Mayhaps Luz took notes from Cool Aunt Lilith’s methods for finding time pools, which are also similar to the natural rifts and made of the same blood!
The kids might be using magic from their scrolls and even pieces from the tamagotchi itself and other items to ‘fuel’ these items and establish a link across worlds... Will Graye’s mirror be used to find things, incorporated into Gus’ headphones? Will they find a natural rift or even a time pool, the latter giving them info on the Wittebros’ past and how the portal was made, maybe enticing Philip to visit and see Caleb again? Will they use Belos’ goop as a fuel source like Titan’s Blood, karma for his palismen consumption? Will Hunter’s physiology come into play, and can Belos sniff him out and track him with it???
It’s as the Oracle sphere told him, he’s already perfect.
Upon seeing the new clip it becomes even funnier to me that Gus' hair is still the same. Like, we knew bc of the poster but now you can really see how everyone else has had at least one hairstyle change but Gus? Same old, same old. Not changing this hair no-siree it's worked fine for the past twelve years it'll work fine for the next twelve years
First look at Season 3!!!
“Cool! Humans freak out just like us!”
I can only wonder what the context of that line is, probably some horror movie and/or Camila watching one, or some kids’ reaction to Halloween ‘costumes’ by the gang! The flip-phone and headphones look modified with tech, is this the kids’ attempt to contact those in the Demon Realm? Did Amity pick up her dad’s skills to invent? Will they use Demon tech like the tamagotchi (we did see her tinker with it) in the hopes of creating a link?
Also, BI FLAG PIN FOR LUZ!!! At first I wondered if this would just be a temporary fixture added by the crew to spite Disney...
But if we look at the official art for S3, Luz’s head is turned in such a way that it hides any potential pins! Which suggests that the pins ARE permanent, Luz is constantly going to remind us she’s bi just by appearance alone! And I gotta hand it to Dana, that’s clever positioning the angle so that we don’t see the pins; Not only is it a reveal hiding in plain sight, but I’m sure it was their way to compromise with Disney and not wanting this too prevalent in their advertising! What if Amity has a lesbian pin hidden on HER design too...??? And is Luz’s eye pin meant to invoke/foreshadow the portal and her own she’ll create?
And Hunter’s hairstyle... It screams Luz’s even MORE in an official S3 screenshot! Did Luz make it for him, or Camila; And/or did he specifically ask for it to be like Luz’s???
Belos and Yo-Yo Ma?
This is a particularly niche take, but (coming from someone who STILL hasn’t started on Steelball Run yet), if I had to assign Belos a Stand from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, now that we know a lot more about him as a person compared to the last time I toyed around with the concept… I’d go for Yo-Yo Ma?
Hear me out. Stands are a manifestation of the user’s psyche, and Yo-Yo Ma belongs to D an G, who was a police officer who abused his position to kill people he didn’t like, before what he believed was the end of the world; Because he believed in the prophecy of Nostradamus or whatever. But when the world didn’t end, D an G was caught and placed in prison. His stand reflects this same principle, of somebody who pretends to be helpful to his victims, only to harm them when their guard is lowered; And in preparation for the end of the world, no less! They’re heralds for the apocalypse, befitting Yo-Yo Ma’s introduction with the reveal of the Green Baby.
Sounds a lot like Belos; Dude isn’t just a cop, he’s THE cop, he basically invented cops for the Boiling Isles! He’s the dictator who created the coven system, and all of its enforcers. And like D an G and his stand, Belos operates from an opposite façade; He claims his covens and their bindings are meant to improve society, make the isles a better place, and that his actions will even save people’s lives if it weren’t for him… Belos is the Benevolent Ruler, just as D an G is the Good Cop.
But like D an G and Yo-Yo Ma, this is all a bold-faced lie meant to distract from the reality; Belos isn’t saving people, he’s dooming and killing them instead! He’s made society actively worse, which if you want to get meta D an G’s personality is reflected in the general attitude of his profession, just as Yo-Yo Ma pretends to be a helpful servant (“I’m just a humble messenger for the Titan”) but is actually melting its victims with numbing acid saliva as soon as they’re not looking. It’s a slow and insidious killer that people don’t even notice, just like the gradual work of Belos’ coven system eroding society from within, discreetly playing the long game, and in ways indirect yet definite. It’s all about appearances and façade, which Belos excels at, such as in his relationships with Caleb, Hunter, Kikimora, etc.
And again, just like D an G/Yo-Yo Ma, Belos is acting in preparation for a certain ‘end of the world’ scenario, because if everyone’s dead, consequences don’t matter right? He himself says it, none of it matters; He just has to live to see it through. And even if Belos DID have the power to stop the draining spell to save his own life… Based on what we’ve seen, how deluded and dedicated he is to being right; Belos would rather be a martyr and take everyone down with him, feel justified as such, than quit now.
But there’s also another aspect to D an G that intrigues me, and that… Is how in spite of his intitial, stoic, intimidating façade; He is fundamentally an immature, wimpy manchild. Compared to other Stand Users who typically tough out some brutal injuries because of their universal fighting spirit, D an G immediately succumbs to messy sobs and bawling, and even cries out for his Mommy; He curses his wounded arm and says he no longer wants it anymore; Like a kid throwing away a toy in a petulant fit of rage. Yo-Yo Ma even sucks his own thumb and wails like a little kid when Anasui tries to retrieve the Green Baby from his stomach.
And Philip… Well, we’ve all established that for all his terror and deceit and effective manipulations, he’s still just an immature manchild, a little kid playing games and fantasy and throwing a tantrum over the fact that Caleb left him. If D an G curses his arm out for hurting and thus hurting him, Philip does the same for Caleb, or Hunter, or any Grimwalker; He doesn’t like this ‘toy’ anymore, he wants to get rid of it! It hurt his feelings… I’m sure the same applies to D an G’s motives as a serial killer, given he went after people he specifically didn’t like, which indicates a personal petulance about the murders. Not unlike Belos immaturely blaming witches for Caleb leaving him, and resolving to commit genocide over this.
But also? Yo-Yo Ma seems to have evolved as not just a manifestation of who D an G is as a person, but also… As a defense mechanism. A coping method, if you will; For starters, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Araki chose the name Yo-Yo MA, when D an G calls out for his Mommy. Given Yo-Yo Ma’s relative lack of connection to his namesake, Araki could’ve named him after any other musical reference, but he didn’t; And I think it’s because the Ma in his name is meant to invoke in his role as a caretaker for D an G, the one he desires.
After all, Yo-Yo Ma acts as a helpful servant to lower the guards of his victims, but who’s to say he doesn’t use his skillset against D an G in a genuine sense? In D an G’s infantile frustration for any unhappiness he comes across, Yo-Yo Ma exists as a perfect helper, coming up with anything, from little games, to cooking up nice meals, to keep him entertained and calm. And as to how this connects to Belos…
Yeah, the Grimwalkers; And Caleb, by the end of the day. Philip ultimately is crying out for Caleb, he WANTS Caleb, and he doesn’t want anybody else; And so he’s made all of these imitations in the hopes of getting that, in the futile hopes of getting that older brother to meet his emotional needs and wants and take care of him. And they all fail, of course; But the Grimwalkers are very much an immature coping method for Belos, over the loss of Caleb.
To wrap things up, there’s Yo-Yo Ma constantly being characterized as gross and creepy, which all fit Belos to a T. They’re both green and VERY hard to kill, regenerating; And insist that people remember their names. Really, you could say the way he acts in Hollow Mind, under the guise of his younger self, is just like Yo-Yo Ma; Pretending to be helpful and innocent, leading Luz and Hunter to supposed safety… When in reality he’s just keeping them in his mind, away from an entity that IS trying to help, and retrieving the materials necessary to take out this entity and thus keep the kids in his mindscape. And for all his acting like a little child, even wanting to make up games, he’s very much a malicious adult as well.
One thing I particularly appreciate about TOH is that the lives and dynamics of the adults are just as varied and fleshed out, or at least have the material to be, as the kids’. Not only does it make the adult cast feel more compelling and strengthen how this show gives rep to older characters having meaningful and fulfilling lives, but it also creates a sphere of influence with a very different tone and setting compared to the high school shenanigans of these teens, with the opportunity for more mature shenanigans and just more of them in general, with the adults having more life experience.
And of course, you also get the generational progression and the chance to explore these adults as they were kids, because TOH really makes the grown ups feel like idealized people with their own personally valid existences, and not just the parent/mentors to our kid protagonists. Which fits Witches before Wizards and its whole “Everyone is the hero of their story” schtick. The coven heads, the parents of our protagonists, the school staff; It’s all very enriching. It’s like a separate realm almost, one for the teenagers and another for the adults, different places for them to operate via different rules, and it makes for better worldbuilding.
One of my favorite thing I’ve learned about animals studies is that you should avoid using colorful leg bands when you’re banding birds because you can accidentally completely skew the data because female birds prefer males with colorful bands
Apparently if you put a red band on a male red wing blackbird his harem size can double
So like you can completely frick up the natural reproduction of a group of birds by giving a guy a bracelet so stylish that females CANNOT resist him
I wonder if there any editions of Dracula that opt to keep him an unknown threat from the start, as long as possible; Skipping out on Jonathan’s journal and starting directly with Mina and Lucy, and only showing us the full scope of Dracula and what happened to Jonathan, after Jonathan sees him in London again for the first time.
It’d be an intriguing change, adding a mystery element as to what happened to Jonathan on his trip, this mysterious Count whom he’s afraid of, as the reader starts to wonder if this Count is connected to the monster that killed Lucy. Kind of like how the captain of the Demeter’s log is placed in the original version of the book and not Dracula Daily; Our first proper look at the monster is only after Lucy dies, when the curtains begin to pull back on him. The revelations come and with them the knowledge and initiative, the classic “Let’s get this guy” phase to every monster film. Our heroes now know what they need to fight back and are motivated to do so as vengeance for their lost friend, having just been terrorized.
