something I don’t really see mentioned or acknowledged at all is that “being in the closet” is a spectrum.
some people are only out to themselves.
some people are only out online.
some people are only out on specific websites or accounts.
some people are only out on a specific space on an account, such as a discord server.
some people are only out irl.
some people are only out when they’re in an area they don’t live in (such as the next city over, or on vacation).
some people are only out to their therapist and/or medical team.
some people are only out at school/uni.
some people are only out at work.
some people are only out to their family.
some people are only out to their friends.
some people are only out to their partner(s).
some people are only out to specific family/friends/partners.
some people express a muted or more “palatable” version of their identity in some or all spaces, not necessarily expressing the fullness of their identity anywhere but to themselves.
some people are partially or fully expressing their gender and/or sexuality, but not expressing other identity signifiers such as new pronouns or name.
or the above but express different versions of these signifiers in different circumstances or spaces.
some people express their identity fully, but don’t correct anyone who is “wrong” or tell anyone the full extent of their identity, with some answering when asked and others not.
some people have come out “fully”, and gone back into the closet “fully.”
some people are stealth, and are very cautious about who they allow (if anyone) to know their full identity.
and most queer people are incredibly complex mixtures of all of the above scenarios, and many more. I can’t possibly list them all.
we cannot meaningfully divide experiences between those who are “in/out of the closet” (full stop) because individual experience is way more nuanced than that. and everyone’s definition of either in/out is going to be different, ranging from “if 1 other person knows, you’re out of the closet” to “unless everybody knows the full extent of your identity, you’re not out of the closet.”

I keep getting the advice both directly and indirectly to “ask doctors to write their refusal to test/treat in your chart” but in my experience that just doesn’t fucking work. maybe there’s some recourse for this that I don’t know about but legit WHAT is there to do when they don’t write it in your chart even when you demand for it. when they say they’re going to or avoid confirming that they will. when they write something else entirely. its your word against theirs isn’t it? like who is going to believe the person who is so obviooouuussslllyyyy (sarcasm) making up an illness to begin with?

the republican who is running for NC governor is exceptionally bad. Mark Robinson…
said women are not meant to be leaders
said when someone becomes pregnant their body is no longer their own
called a woman who had an abortion a “heifer”
ironically, has paid for at least one abortion himself
calls for abortion to banned in all cases and abortion providers to face massive punishments
said feminism is the work of the devil and his minions
referred to gay people as filth
referred to transgender rights as demonic
said loving god and being an LGBT ally are mutually exclusive/incompatible
wants to revoke the rights of same sex married couples
wants to completely REMOVE science AND history from elementary schools
called for the elimination of the NC board of education
has called for the censoring of teachers
various antisemitic and islamophobic comments
shared misinformation about the holocaust
North Carolinians, we MUST do everything in our power to keep this man from having any power over us. I would appreciate if non-North Carolinians would share this as well, as this man is a danger.

something we need to talk about is how people with chronic pain can be charged more for health insurance because they’re at higher risk for suicide, meanwhile getting denied SSI benefits because their condition doesn’t have a verifiable test/exam that confirms a patient has it.

ok I’ve put together a list of disability-focused books for me read while I have the Seattle library ebook card. I’m not sure what order I’m going to read them in, yet. and obviously this list is non exhaustive, it’s just what I could find & deem worth reading from a surface level glance at the blurbs right now, while I have a migraine. i fully intend to explore other topics and revisit other titles im unsure about/prioritizing lower, I have them tagged separately on Libby.
if anyone would like to join me on this journey— be it by reading/listening to the books yourself at your own pace or just following my own posts about what I read— I’m going to come up with a tag for this journey. suggestions for that are welcome, I just want it to be a near-unique tag because tumblr search is awful
(most of the titles I have selected for this list at least make a notable effort to be inclusive and intersectional, if you’re worried about that. however, I have not read any of these yet, I cannot confirm anything about their actual content. I guarantee there will be excerpts worth critique from books on this list. part of exploring these heavy social topics is critical thinking.)
my current list is as follows, in no particular order:
Fat Girls Hiking by Summer Michaud-Skug — I’m interested particularly in modifying hiking (and other outdoor activities) to be more accessible for myself, as I love hiking but find it very difficult nowadays, the book seems to be at least decently disability-informed
The Future Is Disabled by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha — disability justice for a better future that emphasizes the value of disabled folks. overall interested to see the perspectives and rhetoric presented in this book, along with:
Care Work by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha — I don’t think I can do this one justice in a couple lines of tumblr text. read its blurb yourself, it includes: “a toolkit for everyone who wants to build radically resilient, sustainable communities of liberation where no one is left behind.”
My Body Is Not A Prayer Request by Amy Kenny — appeals to my experience living as disabled and intersex in a rural part of the Bible Belt in an evangelical household
Disability Pride by Ben Mattlin — gonna be honest, I threw this one in without reading its blurb. regardless of its quality, I believe I should read it based off title
Crip Kinship by Shayda Kafai — this book is based around an art activism project called Sins Invalid, exploring some of the messaging of it in a disability justice framework
Against Technoableism by Ashley Shew — from what I can gather, this book touches a lot on the social model of disability
Decarcerating Disability by Liat Ben-Moshe — prison abolition and decarceration with a disability focus
QDA by Raymond Luczak — QDA stands for queer disability anthology, also threw this one in based on the title

Ok I have had a lot of absolutely infuriating ER visits that have threatened my life. But I don’t think a single one has made me as angry as this one.
I have COVID, found that out at the ER while I was there for my foot starting to go cyanotic/blue (with secondary flu-like symptoms). It was relatively mild when I got there, but my actual doctor’s on-call-team told me to get to the ER as soon as physically possible when they heard it was even slightly cyanotic, take no more than 30 minutes to get to ER.
The images under the cut are what my foot looked like before I went to the ER and when I was discharged.
At discharge, my doctor told me, and I quote, “your medical history is so unusual, and this issue is incredibly unusual. I don’t know what to do with you, so I have to send you home, dear.”
do not call me dear when you’re sending me home with an entire cyanotic leg that has only gotten worse, extremely worse at that, the entire time I’ve been in your care.
He also said it was likely because my blood vessels were rupturing beneath my skin and bleeding. If that is continually getting much, much worse as the visit goes on, how is that safe for discharge? Oh, his logic was “it’s not hurting you.” Even when my foot went tingly for 20 minutes, and then entirely numb for 20 minutes. Those were the 40 minutes that directly lead up to my discharge.
He also refused to document that he was refusing to treat me. He refused to document the extent/worsening of my leg’s cyanosis/bruising as well, but don’t worry, I took pictures throughout the visit.
Images of the foot/leg below the cut. If you can stomach it, I highly encourage you to look at the rest of the post, and see how wronged I was for being chronically ill and disabled.
these were before going to the ER. just foot and ankle at that point.

this was a few min after I had arrived at the ER, when a reddish/pinkish spot formed in the cyanotic/bruised area and hurt. It’s about an inch below the big toe. (The other bump in the flesh-toned area? That’s been there for 10 days.)

And the following images were at discharge:

note for the last image (and really all of the images): the cyanosis/bruising was way more obvious in real life. The camera auto-balances so much that it doesn’t pick it up so good, or whatever. For the last image specifically, compare the part of my thigh in the left part of the image to the part further to the right and higher up in the image. Subtle in the photo maybe, but still evident.
Also, my other foot for good measure:
Tumblr media
I got sent home like this, with that foot entirely numb, because the doctor “didn’t know what to do with me.” Because I have a complex medical history. This is the only hospital in my county, aka within an hour’s drive.
Thankfully, it has cleared up a little bit since I got home, it’s still very obviously there… but I’m still waiting for my PCP’s on-call-team to call me back… they were supposed to over an hour ago.

why the HELL does NO ONE on this forsaken website talk about or boost posts about the far right extremism in North Carolina? I make posts about it when I’m able to and sometimes it feels like I’m the ONLY fucking one, on the entire website, who brings it up. My posts get like a few dozen notes and then crickets.
go into the tags “North Carolina” and “nc” and see how long it takes you to find political posts on the “top” option. you’ll notice in the nc tag the first one you see is my post from months ago before my mental health crashed severely (partly because of the content of that fucking post) to the point I needed over 80 hours of therapy in less than 3 weeks to even get stable again
with less than 120 notes
and in the “North Carolina” tag the first political post has absolutely nothing to do with Actual NC Politics
I’m not gonna fucking put guilt tripping shit in the body of a post I want people to reblog. I’m not doing it. But I’m also not going to fucking sit here and NOT talk about how LIVID this makes me that NO ONE CARES ABOUT US!!!!
IT IS LAW IN NORTH CAROLINA NOW THAT PARENTS HAVE TO BE NOTIFIED IF ANY STUDENT (K-12) REQUESTS TO BE CALLED A DIFFERENT NAME OR PRONOUN. EVEN IF ITS A NICKNAME
The legal reason for this is “to not notify the parents would be withholding crucial information about the student’s mental health”
NO queer (“sexuality”) or sexual education material or discussion for students through 3rd grade
Parents gained the right to request a list of every single book a student has checked out of the school library, and also object to ANY curricular or supplementary material used in the class. FOR ALL STUDENTS K-12
THERE ARE TRANS PEOPLE, TRANS CHILDREN, IN NORTH CAROLINA. This is a fucking DISASTER for education, a DISASTER for queer children, and I haven’t seen a GOD DAMNED SINGLE PERSON on this site talking about it until I searched the bill by name on here!!! And there were like 2 posts, one was a vent, that did not give much information at all and both had 0 notes!!!
And that doesn’t even get into the absolute SHIT STAIN running for governor but I already made a post about that and it got 118 fucking notes. He is a walking DISASTER for ALL marginalized people of NC and children because even though he’s pulling some gaslighty shit like “I never said that,” he is on record saying he wants to REMOVE SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
STOP IGNORING US
I’M BEGGING YOU
