in relation to the sci-fi essay, do you think that any other movies or books show the parallels between the sci-fi and gothic genres in a similar sort of way? and with the matrix being the most widely popular movie to argue the points it does showing support for trans people and opposing capitalism and do you think it lead to the ability for more media to bridge the gap between sci-fi and the gothic, but also to openly criticise social systems without fear of it being less popular due to opposing lots of peoples beliefs at the time, or do you think the matrix was done in a way where it allowed for people to ignore the crucial points for their own comfort and not challenge their beliefs?
hi, thanks for the question!! historically, the biggest (and first / most popular) example of a text that bridges the gap between sci fi and the gothic is mary shelley’s frankenstein. the gothic, and by natural extension sci fi, inherently criticises social systems as a part of the narrative structure of the genre. it takes a societal fear such as the fear of people playing god and pairs it with a supernatural being such as frankenstein’s monster in order to create commentary on society’s fears. frankenstein is the most salient example of the gothic and sci fi morphing together, and is definitely the most well known text that bridges the gap between genres. there are many film and stage iterations of the text that are structured in various styles that take different aspects of the text’s social commentary to focus on. sci fi itself is inherently political.
to answer the second part of the question, many gothic and sci fi texts gain popularity years after initial release, when the meaning of these texts is finally understood and the become cult classics. straying slightly from the gothic and sci fi for a second, chuck palahnuik’s fight club is a prime example of a text / movie that wasn’t well received upon release but later became popular - it is a political text that comments on the radicalisation of young disenfranchised men and the commentary is made explicit but it still remains widely misunderstood due to the male dominated fanbase wanting the piece to validate their violence. like your question poses, audiences often ignore the real meaning for the sake of their own comfort. fight club and the matrix show that a text’s criticism of societal norms can be as explicit as possible, but audiences will misinterpret it if they intend to use the text to validate their own ideals. media already has the ability to openly criticise social systems but the question is whether audiences will be receptive to it. authors and directors and playwrights will always be making some commentary on the topic of their piece of media, because media itself is a vehicle for meaning and no media is made without an inherent meaning or without making a statement on its chosen topic. with every piece of media there will always be a portion of the audience that ignores the crucial points for the sake of their own comfort and reinforcing their own beliefs but that doesn’t take away from the meaning itself.
psychologically we can assess the effectiveness of media in conveying its message. there are two systems of persuasion in social psychology: system 1 and system 2. system 1 is fast acting and functions by reinforcing the beliefs individuals already hold, for instance an advert for a product that is already well liked. system 2 is slower and functions by trying to change the beliefs individuals already hold, for instance greta thunberg’s speech to the un. system 2 is more complex and difficult to execute and media like the matrix attempts to execute system 2, aiming to alter the audience’s generally held belief that governments have our best interests in mind and can be trusted, and also implicitly advocating for trans identities to be respected. the reason the movie has become understood decades after its release is because system 2 persuasion is slow and less effective than system one.

So. For my Kirby fangame, I'm thinking about having it so a LOT of time has passed between Kirby and The Forgotten Land and the events of this game. Kirby is now a teenager, BD is now getting ready to succeed King Dededee as the old penguin himself is preparing to retire,Meta Knight has mysteriously disappeared... Yet, when Kirby gets a video call from an old friend on the interplanetary phone network... That friend looks exactly the same. Yep, Adeleine has not aged at all. How and why is questioned by Kirby, but Adeleine refuses to answer, just saying that she's in danger and needs help. Kirby, of course, sets off,,flexing their new teenage ego and drive for independence as they believe they can handle this all on their own without asking Bandanna Dee or King Dedede for help. They set off for a strange planetoid, where Adeleine is supposedly located without telling anyone. Except. Two folks standing in the shadows seem to know exactly where Kirby is heading and head off their own, one being beamed away onto a ship and the other sprouting a pair of familiar wings as they fly off. Whether or not this is Susie and Meta Knight or Marx and Magolor is up to your personal interpretation until the game comes out.

Can I just say, I don't know if your theme or direction invites any of these parallels, but I got just a bit of Metroid vibes reading that! (Not that think it'll turn out that way, as much as I wanted to say, you've got the mystery vibes down!)

With that in mind, whos the rarest monsters? Cause I feel like the interactions between
member-monster -> you -> others of their kind
is very different, and the way they would have you interact with their world is very much dependent on their species’ rarity.
Cause for woo, if he’s the only being left, I can understand his party attitude acting as a tiny bandaid to the large wound of being the last of his kind—but if he isn’t!!! That’s the big problem cause I’m sure he wouldn’t appreciate someone of matching or stronger magics to interfere with what he grows with you. Idk if he would feel secure in a future with you if he knew that he wasn’t the only one there with his being that could potentially tamper with your fate the way he could. I also think he would go absolutely ballistic of another of his kind threatened his livelihood on a scale where only he can defend it.
Hellhounds for me seem like solitary creatures despite being dogs, or it could be the hard topic of discussion for you and yuyu. Cause if he was part of pack, idk how he could handle another his kind finding humor or other unsavory thoughts in concerns of your relationship with yuyu.
We already got a glimpse of Hwa so the siren folk seem so beautiful and open minded (from what we witnessed so far) but at the same time, I feel like joong is holding out on some thoughts because of his former humanity.
Mingi, sang, Jongho give me similar territorial vibes but in their own ways. Dragons give me solitary vibes but at the same time, very much “would ally with an enemy dragon against dragon hunters/dragon enemies without a second thought”.
Fae and incu-sucu-buses I feel like are very protective and competitive beings and the mere thought of others of their kind coming to steal their treasures for themselves sets them off in their worst ways.
Also, did you already give a hint for what San is cause I’m drawing a massive blank trying to comprehend what he was 🤔🤔🤔

as far as rarety goes, Woo would be at the top here. He's not the ONLY eldrich being in existence (might fuck around and add nods to my rp verses in here and throw in eldrich Lee Minho and eldrich Yeonjun for giggles who knows depends on how Im feeling that day-) so yes def a big uh oh potential there. He's not the only one, but he's one of the most active. The Elder Gods usually lay dormant and observe in a hibernative state but Woo has like....cosmic adhd man he cant still if you paid him so it started with him walking amongst the stars and observing and ended up with him amongst the people of our humble little space rock because author fie said so *wheeze*
after him would be Mingi, since dragons don't just make babies left and right and they also have a very intricate incubation period once their eggs are laid. and even then, its like rolling a gatcha to see if the egg will even hatch or if it's a dud with nobody home. (Dragon eggs are really expensive though so you can imagine Mingi is a bit...fucking batshit feral around his eggs and when it comes to protecting them)
everyone else is on the more common side. Seaborns are..well, born, or transformed, fae are born rather frequently, same with Incubi/Succubi, and after them the more uncommon would be Manticores (San) and Hellhounds (Yunho). Not super extremely rare, but the manticores are endangered and most of the Hellhounds are...still in Hell. or they prefer to hang around cemeteries scaring the shit out of teenagers idk.
Hellhounds are usually more solitary in this verse but Yuyu still retains his Golden Retriever status so he tends to hang around his besties. Plus I have some lore for how he met some of the others and became intertwined in this 8 way band of idiots from very very different walks of life. So he's an anomaly in his own right behaviour-wise.
Hongjoong is def jaded from trauma, and usually keeps to himself guiding and leading their Oceanic village until he has to come above for Business Time(tm), but he does very much enjoy all of his non equatic boyos (folks say you don't pick favorites, Hongjoong will laugh at you and say the 9 foot tall dog and the 10 foot tall winged lizard are his favorites anyway)
San is probably one of the more solitary out of them because of the endangerment status of manticores. He's more social around them all and Wooyoung and him get on thick as thieves (because of course they do, you expect me to not glue WooSan to the hip? cmon now-) but he's a bit more distrusting of the world around him compared to the others (*cough* Yeosang, Yunho *cough*) Mingi has his own den as well but since the boys became besties, there are enchantments he can put on them (thanks, Woo, thanks Yeo-) that protect his area when he's away to help out with anything the others need.
Jongho would be competitive but he uh. Has a bit of a dilemma. He's an incubi whos never had a "proper" meal. So he kind of just. feeds off of the folks around him when he can be around that but he's a bit of a struggle bus at the moment until I decide who he's getting matched with. Also, he still is the youngest of all of them so he's full of untapped potential. Please save him.

Hey, doc, I got some tricks to make myself go get needle stuff done and I'm also afraid of needles, so maybe it'll help with the other person who doesn't like them either? I bring plush toys with me to squeeze and rub, helps me to sooth myself beforehand. I don't look at the needles, and I sob if I need to (I always need to, the nurses think im a big baby but I'd rather sob and get it over with that need to reschedule because I can't handle it in that moment). I also make sure I have money for food and a special drink immediately after. My mom taught me these trick when I was young and it's gotten to the point now where if a needle goes into my skin I now get hungry, because my body has been trained to associate that feeling with food literally my entire life. Positive reinforcement is much more successful for most people than negative consequences of not doing something. Enforcing that if you do this thing you don't like you can then go do something you do like will make the overall experience more bearable, whereas punishing yourself for not doing it will only have negative associations attached to that thing. That being said, because I've literally been trained this way my whole life, I found myself very disappointed when I didn't have the money for food last time and my dad didn't want to take me through a drive through and just took me home. I also have the issue of actually being able to feel the needles inside me though, even though everybody insists that I can't and that I just need to grow up, I very much can feel the entire length of the needle and whatever it's doing, putting something in me or taking something out. This fear is one I've tried my whole life to get over but just can't. Nothing negative has ever happened to me with a needle, I just freak out every time. I do feel more than the average person and maybe that's why everybody I talk to about it insists I can't actually feel the needle inside me, but the fact of the matter is the same: positive reinforcement is a very good way to handle fears that you need to be able to push past for your own health and safety, let alone the health and safety of others

You must get more sexual asks than anything else, and I am SO sorry people see you as an object and not a human soul, but I have legitimate issues I need advice with and I don’t know where to turn... You’re very sensible which is why I feel comfortable approaching you, even if anonymously. I was raised being told asking for help is shameful and makes you a burden and have lived my life believing that. I need help. So bad. But I can’t bring myself to ask out of fear of disappointing/burdening people. How would you suggest I ask for help so I don’t feel like a stain on society?
I will say first and foremost, I’m not a licensed professional and this is just my opinion and advice, make of it what you will. Secondly, thank you for concerns, darlin’ Anon, and no need to apologize on their behalf. They had an itch that needed to be scratch by some means.
Anywho, about your concern. You could just switch your perception on the matter. Let me explain. Instead of seeing yourself burdening/disappointing others, don’t you think your lack of knowledge is the actual burden? That, not asking for help is the reason you’re actually disappointing others? For me, I’m a very prideful person, despite my appearance or my answers on my asks (which I’m almost embarrassed you have read them). And recently, in the workplace in particular, I have started to learn to ask for help because I cannot complete all of the tasks given within a timely manner. Also, asking for clarification on other things to a superior has helped me understand the materials better, so that I wouldn’t turn in half-assed work that I might have to redo in the future.
It will be difficult, but maybe try to switch your perception and ask for help once and awhile. Maybe you will learn something you didn’t know and make new connection.

i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one
his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.
ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication
ok yknow what Edit: i shouldve made it even more explicit at the end of this post, i hadnt thought i would need to since i started the post with this, but i think a few too many people are missing my point so i just wanna clarify. i shouldnt have said 'really clashed' and left it at that because yeah they did, but it wasnt just their opposite methods of communication, it is also very much that toshiro was experiencing microaggressions via laios. it may have been unintentional on laios's part, but it still happened and wore him down, made it harder for him to communicate on top of both the more subtle social cues that he was raised with and his own communication difficulties. i also want to say that the fandom reaction to toshiro and the complete ignorance of this point is also racist tbh or at the very least ignorant. i understand that the anime did not cover this panel, and neither did the manga, as this was an omake, but im gonna be real with you guys. there are enough context clues within the story to clue you into this. if you didnt pick up on it thats ok, but i think this is a good lesson in picking up subtext in the stories that youre watching and/or reading. kui shouldnt have to explicitly say 'by the way laios was racist to toshiro' for this point to be understood, and at the very least, when the author portrays a character in a sympathetic light (as kui clearly does) it should make you question Why they are doing so and what makes them sympathetic, rather than youre immediate and only reaction to be 'well i hated what this guy did/said so i hate them and they suck'. idk exactly how to finish this, just. idk. question your biases and gut reactions to things you see in media and stories, and think about whether or not theres subtext that youre missing.

virgin sacrifice reader offered to war god ghost?? prepare to be his lovely wife instead of a sacrifice with at least 10 demigods running around, he wants to raise strong warriors!
Ghost would definitely be a god similiar to Ares; a god of war, brutality, bloodshed, masculinity and virility. Men go and pray by his shrine or in his dedicated temple to give them strength in both battle and bed, to be a strong and unbeatable warrior and be able to father strong, healthy children.
One such temple, the main one, is in a surprisingly remote location, surrounded not by a major city or capital but a few villages. According to myths it was this place where a brutal battle took place millenia ago where the fearsome god Ghost defeated an army all by himself, the blood of his slain enemies served to make the land fertile and for many villages to grow and prosper...until now.
Usually sacrifaces to appease the god would be made by the men of the villages; black stallions, the strongest bulls, wine, silver and pure steel, everything that has connections to masculinity and power, however some kind of horrible fatum seems to hang over your little village. The animals either die young or are sickly and weak, the wine turns out sour like vinegar, there in so money to buy anything either and it's taken as a curse by the elders. If nothing will be done and Ghost won't have his sacrifice who knows what will happen?
So they decide on the next best thing, a desperate last choice reach in hopes to appease the brutal god-a virgin sacrifice. The prettiest, unmarried and untouched young woman is to be chosen, dressed in the finest, gauzy silks and locked inside the stone temple in hopes that the god will come down and the blood of a slain virgin will calm his fury. Luck wasn't on your side it seems, you were chosen.
All you could remember were the desperate cries of your mother, the dissapointed remorseful look on your father's face and the ritual cleansing of the old crones in the village. You were cleaned in rose water, intricate patterns were drawn with a mixture of honey, mushed up berries and flowers on your breasts, around your nipples and bellybutton, and the most intricate was drawn on the place where your womb was. You were clothed in a white gauzy dress that was a symbol of your purity and then you were bound and dragged to the temple no matter how much you struggled and kicked and pleaded until you were finally locked in the dimly lit temple, only the many candles present to lighten the main chamber and to show the powerful, majestic sculpture of the god, Ghost.
Imagine crying yourself to sleep, everything hurt, you were scared and confused, all alone to die in this forsaken temple because some old men decided on it. Falling asleep out of exhaustion, the images of your crying, terrified mother haunting you even when sleeping.
Imagine waking up and instead of feeling cold and sore from sleeping on the unforgiving stone floor, and instead finding yourself laying on and under the most luxurious furs you've ever seen, the warmth of them felt like a blanket and the smell of them, pleasant warm masculine musk made a shiver run down your spine, just where were you?
Before you had the chance of looking around the room, you felt huge, strong arms clamping togehter around you and bringing you into a powerful, broad chest which rumbled with a growl like purr and a stern voice saying:
"Stay. Don't move around girl."
And the very same arms turned you gently around to face the man behind you and you couldn't help but gasp and breath out a tiny, frightened yelp-behind you was laying a man who looked like the stone sculpture of Ghost cane to life and became human. It...it was Ghost. You laid next to a god.

I actually spent some time thinking about this yesterday.
and I came up with 2 answers.
1.)

but anyways!!!
Odasaku.
He strikes me as the 'ride or die' kind of friend. Whenever Dazai wants to do something crazy, Oda goes along with it and is SO CALM. He can be goofy with Dazai and Ango. In Dark Era, Dazai once drugged their food and when Dazai offered to cook again, Ango was like "NO!" but Oda was literally just like, "If it keeps you from getting tired, then it must be good."
Oda is a listener. He listens a lot and is VERY observant. He's good at understanding other people BUT he also doesn't act like he knows everything about them.
I like that.
Tbh I want more adventure in my life. I think Oda would be very good and understanding with me 🤭 If I think of doing something crazy, he might go along with it and help me. He's very calm even in stressful situations so that would help me a lot.

Unless it's a life-or-death situation, he doesn't force Dazai to do anything. He's 100% honest and doesn't try to control Dazai or manipulate things. He's usually always on board and doesn't judge when Dazai says something crazy.
I want that. I don't want him to treat me like a kid/control things for me/lie to me and I want him to spoil me.
I think he's the type to remember everything even if it's just a small detail. 💞
Lastly, he's brutally honest but he says it in a calm, non-aggressive way.
Oda is also the kind of person who you can confront without worrying.

He's so chaotic, bubbly, and goofy!!
I like goofy people who are loud and make jokes.
Nikolai is VERY EXPRESSIVE when it comes to people he likes.
He doesn't get shy at holding Fyodor's hands or saying out loud in front of everyone that Fyodor is his << dearest friend >>
I like that! If he was my partner, he'd probably tell everyone about it and hug me a lot --- which I like 💗 (I really like hugs lol)
Besides being goofy and funny, He's also very philosophical.

Lastly,
with Fyodor, Nikolai continues to stay on Fyodor's side even though Fyodor doesn't respond with the same energy.
Sometimes I get drained or busy and I don't feel like responding right away.
Even if I seen zone Nikolai or send dry texts, he won't get mad at me and he'll be the same as always.
He's okay even if he cares about me more than I care about him.

Can you rate boyfriend material for each of monsteez
Hongjoong- starts off at about 5/10 stars. He's sarcastic, can be rude, and is very much jaded from his past experiences. If his partner is a human, he may have a hard time being the assertive one when it comes to the matter of transformations for reasons but also he wouldn't exactly be too keen on them keeping their fragile mortality regardless. Probably would do better with a monsterkin partner from the gate, to be honest. Moves up in rating the more time he has to open up to romance again.
Seonghwa- 8.5/10. Very good once he understands exactly what his partner needs. He's kind of ignorant to the needs of non monsterkin, and especially humans, as many of his experiences with them have ended in them being devoured for trying to harm his waters and therefore, his people. Once he actually understands the needs and wants of his partners, he's golden. Very doting and not afraid to ask questions to the more experienced of his circle when it comes to better caring for his s/o(s).
Yunho- 100000000000/10. SSR Tier. He's spent many centuries observing others around him. Humans, divine creatures, damned creatures, everything in between. If you caught him more around the time of his maturity, he'd be at the bottom of the list as far as material goes, but he's observed many a relationship and believes in doing anything and everything to protect and cherish all that comes from a good one. Plus, he's a horse sized guard dog, not a single thing is getting through him to harm his s/o, he'd sooner fight god himself. He's also great with kids. probably helps elderly across the street too. A very good boy both in and out of hound form.
Yeosang- 7/10. He's not a bad partner, but he's certainly a bit oblivious. overworks himself too much trying to tend to others, and that may leave him missing all the right signs to further any crushes and pining into a relationship. Once he does figure it out, though, his s/o can expect many a protection spell, little trinkets here and there scattered around their room, a show of lights every night as he quietly reciprocates and does anything he can to make them smile. Also really good with kids since that's mostly what he does in the forest, take care of chaos children trying to trick your average passerby into handing over their name and voice and other silly quirky things.
San- 4/10. He's terrified but not in the cowardly lion way (ha), more of a quiet apprehension kind of way. It takes him forever to trust anyone at all, which may make plenty of potential suitors lose patience and think he's not interest and give up on him. It hurts, but he often thinks this is for the best, as he constantly questions his own self worth and ability to protect himself, let alone his family. Once he's in one, though, he's got a lot of insecurities to work throughout but if his partner is patient, he's a 10. He just needs a bit more tlc
Mingi-9/10. The ONLY reason he loses a point is because he can be a bit too possessive at times and downright hostile when it comes to protecting eggs he's trying to hatch. Never to his partner, but he could be with the others around him when it comes to getting too close to his den when eggs are present. It can be a bit of a stifle for his partner, hence the lost point, but in other aspects, he's a Very Good Lizard. Sometimes overly gentle due to his size (he's a 10 foot tall behemoth of a man, he's gotta be careful-) and he's an exceptional listener when it comes to the folks around him and he's the type that never gives up when it comes to tackling a problem and facing what comes with it.
Wooyoung- ????/10 Honestly it depends. Wooyoung is literally the most laid back of the bunch (what do you have to worry about when nothing on the planet can harm you?) but sometimes his demeanor can be offputting for some. The mere fact of him being a god, an eldrich one at that, may be enough to keep people far far away from him, and he's truly not the one to try and press his case with anyone. If you don't like him because of who he is, if you're too terrified to be around him, he won't waste the time to try and convince you that "no, really, I'm such a great guy uwu". Not at all compatible with people who like a chase in the pining phase of a relationship. Sometimes he has someone who he finds truly interesting and THEN he's more interested in knowing more. Never with humans, though. As I said before, he finds them utterly fucking boring sooner or later.
Jongho- 3/10 but only as he is for now. Jongho isn't a BAD boyfriend, rather, he has no idea how to be one. He gets flustered easily, has a lot of hangups about what he is and how he needs to sustain himself, and has never fed even once. He's got absolutely no confidence and it may be a huge turn off for any potential s/os. Again, if someone who has eyes for him wants the whole cat and mouse, it's not going to happen with him. If anything, you need to be clear and upfront and persistent with HIM above all. I'm sure he'll get there soon. Probably after a good meal and some tlc
