#omg#tfw youre reading one of your favorite physical copies of a book that you love#and youre favorite character says a slur#HE DOESNT EVEN SAY THAT IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE THE TRANSLATORS WERE JUST BEING MALICIOUS ON PURPOSE#😭#when i saw it i gasped#like it might not be officially stated#but this is the type of guy that if he woke up with a vagina (which is something very possible in the world he lives in) hed just go like.#okay.#then move on with his day with only like minor grumbling#plus the author has written trans/trans aligning characters before and since so its not her#i dont think the translator actually did it on purpose it was just a surprise#considering the comment is supposed to be foreshadowing the fact he marries a man#like. hes homophobic to only himself bc the guy that he marries Was married to over 600 women in another universe#and he thought he had something to do with it#(regardless of them being the same age and the guy implied to know hes not the original guy or atleast without his memories#he thinks that since he was in a position of power he somehow did something subconsciously#which the guy winds up telling him outright that it wasnt him. esp since the original version of himself is Also in love with him#on first meeting!)#* unconsciously god#like. the comment was something about so long as he ends up with a real woman#but that was meant to call back to the time a skinner demon tried fo skin him and the other kids under his care#and while they took the form of a woman they will change it up so long as the skin is pretty and powerful

gotta say my fave thing about spirk is how many flavors there are
for just the base menu we have:
pon farr: a classic, fuck-or-die, basically canon (y’all have seen the gifs, that shit’s not photoshopped, bare-tittied Jim wrestles deep-in-the-throws-of-Plaktow Spock, cue the time knife meme)
Old Married Softies: they’re old, they’re married, death was never an option, even in retirement the ship never leaves them for they are the ship
love, for dummies: they are literally the only two that can’t see they’re in love with each other, like guys chess isn’t supposed to be an aphrodisiac
Oh No! Another Mission Snafu!: basic TOS episode plot line but they say that shit with their words AND their eyes
wait... friend brother and lover???: Jim realizing consistent erections are not common amongst two bros who’re just buddy ol’ pals, a bi-realization if you will (Jim: wait... I can like both?)
Khan: death was the only option, also glass is homophobic
gay apartment on wheels: pretty self explanatory, applies to the whole crew (with spirk being the parents or the children, take your pick), they’re a family who all live together and travel/adventure together and they’re all gay, found family and shenanigans ensue
omgtheywereroommates: an au. it’s an au
Jesus: by way of body hopping or blood trading by gods Bones is gonna single-handedly make sure they’re both alive even if he has to resurrect them himself bc he cannot deal with just one, the triumvirate is a delicate balance of knowing that each man can and will kill the other if not reigned in by the third
checkmate: chess is an aphrodisiac

I really wanted to say something abt it, as you brought up how ppl seem to want Toga and Ochako to fight over Deku.
It reminds me of when some bkdks say that "If one of them was a girl, nobody would bat an eye and say that they are canon right away", and while i think that's true to some degree, i think things wouldn't change that much if Katsuki was the girl, specifically. At least, not when it comes to this group.
Bc, Kacchan is somehow controvertial over him being a schoolyard bully and insicure kid, and the fandom blowing it WAY out of proportion. I think that would happen the same way if he was a girl, but now added a much thicker layer of mysogyny.
Bc then they would most definitely pit him against Uraraka, just like they do to Toga, and be as horribly sexist as one can possibly be. Bc just like Toga, he wouldn't fit the perceived "perfectly sweet, wholesome submissive wife" role that they want Uraraka to be in so badly.
I'm saying this reminds me of what you said, bc this group, (made all basically of men), don't hate togachako and bkdk just bc they're homophobes, no, they actually hate any ship that have these two with other characters.
Bc they also have a twisted want for mha to insert in some harem shit between any girl Deku has a any interaction with so they can project onto him as the protagonist surrounded by women, and in the end be satisfied with seeing Uraraka become the pretty, submissive housewife bc that's her job as the nice main girl.
So if anyone else has a genuine shot with Deku or Uraraka, it breaks that illusion that this is what they are going to get, no matter what. And that's what they are used to getting.
Absolutely agree, Anon!
I feel like if Katsuki was a girl, there would be that group of people who would call her a bitch and "she and Izuku wouldn't work out" and definitely would view Katsuki as too "dominating" due to personality.
I hate this for several reasons because if you're shipping IzuOcha because you view Uraraka as the "perfect, submissive little wife" and that's it, you are not a true fan of her.
Like no one who is a genuine fan of her would look at her as just some "wife" for Midoriya because she's "meek and sweet".
First off, she's not "meek and submissive". Uraraka isn't a shy character. She's a lot more outgoing and social than Midoriya himself is. This is the same girl who even decided to do her internship with GUNHEAD, a Pro Hero named GUNHEAD.
Yes, she is a sweet soul. Yes, she is kind. But Uraraka isn't meant to be a girl that should be viewed as submissive because she is a nice girl. On Midoriya’s part, it's like saying he must be with her because "that's what a real man would do". He can't be with a guy, he can't have emotions. He can't cry. It's the only way some of these "fans" will actually like Midoriya. If he "gets his girl" at the end. Even though the story never was about them like that. Hell, if it was, Uraraka would have been introduced in the first episode and Midoriya would have some monologue about liking her or she is seen admiring him from afar behind some trees.
They don't care for his or Uraraka's characters like that.
Sexist and misogynistic, indeed!
Second, damn, can these kids like finish school first? We really need a timeskip where they're married? Like they can't beat the bad guys first?
Like I want a graduation timeskip! Ain't this story about how Midoriya and the others become great heroes? Last time I checked, marriage isn't needed for them to be good heroes. If it was a requirement, All Might would have been married.
And the harem thing? Ooooh, the amount of headaches I have probably gotten from going into certain tags on AO3 and here and seeing Midoriya being shipped with every single female character before I can get to the filter and exclude buttons.
I just can't sometimes, Anon.
I know a lot of Shonen and other genres in anime and any other media have certain tropes they use over and over, but sometimes it's nice to break away from said tropes.
Off topic kinda, but speaking of harems and girls, I love how in canon that they girls don't harbor romantic feelings over Midoriya and fight with each other. I also love that while they express Todoroki's pretty boy status, they don't fight over him either. They mention he's handsome and move on. Like I love that right there.
When some common tropes are taken and twisted into something a little more tolerable or feels not so played out.

so since i obvs 'like' billy i have the strongest urge to rant ab his character and the way the fandom treats him and people who think hes attractive bc.
ofc billy in the show is an awful person. hes a racist and a bully and just not a nice guy at all and i will never try to excuse that. however what people dont understand is in season 2 he was 17 years old. and not only that he was a 17 year old that has been abused almost all his life. your views and the way you act are hugely affected by your surroundings and so yeah growing up with an abusive and canonically homophobic and misognistic father will not be good for your own views on life. while this does not excuse his behaviour its an explanation, and it also means he COULD have been redeemed. he was a kid and all he needed was a good influence that stuck around and cared for him.
as for the way people treat his character its understandable to dislike him bc he is a pos however to go and call ppl who find billy attractive 'racists' is insane. hes not real for one and for another simply finding someone attractive does not mean you agree with their actions?? the amount of people who say he deserved to die is scary because he was barely an adult when he died and he sacrificed himself to save everyone like as much as that didnt make up for what hes done it proves he couldve become better.
another thing i really hate is whenever someone writes a fic or makes an edit theres always that one 'ew hes racist' comment. how about we not make people feel bad for fancying a fictional character !! its especially bad when someone points out his abuse and i see people saying he deserved it. yall are disgusting.
i find it insane that people have way more sympathy for karen, a married woman who almost left her family for a barely 18 year old kid, than billy who was an abused child. like genuinely the idea of that is so weird.
and also my biggest issue with this is nobody has a problem with 001 whos a child murderer and a man who wants to take over the world. or to go outside of ST, draco malfoy who got a whole side of tiktok yet is a racist, classist nazi who says slurs, and yet is one of the most crushed on fictional characters?? so its fine to like him or dabi from mha, or even bakugou from mha but not billy hargrove. thats crazy to me because how can you seperate fiction from reality for everyone but this one character.
i have so many thought ab his character honestly and i could go on forever ab him but im sick of going to read a harmless fanfiction ab him and seeing the tag full of people calling me racist for it bc again
hes👏not👏real

1/2 We are officially at 5x06. The beginning of the end and heartbreak. Just so you know: he somehow convinced himself that he was just reading too much into Justin’s behavior previous episodes and that he misunderstood Randy’s performance and that all will be okay. Don’t ask how he got to that conclusion bc he doesn’t know either. I would also like to say that i wrote this out on Friday but ended up not being able to send it cause somebody was grieving cause it was the anniversary of Freddie Mercury. So he forced me and the neighbor to go to a bar where he bribed the bartender to put Queen on. And then he pouted at the bar, listening to Queen, talking about Britin to the bartender (!!) and drank his juice. Like a child. Anyway: we came to meet Brandon ‘whats with the zoom in on Brian and Justin? What is happening? HE TURNED BRIAN DOWN? Bri Bri, i would never treat you like that!’ And immediately after that it shows the wedding Rage cover ‘what the fuck is happening? Why are they doing that? That makes no sense, i don’t like it. (mikey and ben start kissing) WHATS WITH THE ZOOM IN ON JUSTIN AGAIN?’ ‘WHATS WRONG WITH DEBBIE? What is happening?!’ And we made it to the Queer Guy meet and greet ‘what the fuck is this? *looks at me* whats going on in this episode? LOOK BRIAN SHOWED UP! (Brian has his queer guy speech) i hate to say it but i think Brian is right. I mean even that dude at the news said that even homophobes love him..why did Brian just have a flashback to that blonde dude rejecting him? Again whats going on this episode?!’ Hunter says theres no solution to him being treated bad by his classmates ‘burn the school down to the ground. Problem solved. I’m surprised Ben doesn’t understand Hunter..like dude Deb treated you like shit for half a season?’ And we are at Britin scene ‘AHHHHH MY BOYS! (Brian says he’s gonna burn mikeys house down) GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE! (Justin asks Brian whats his problem and my brother pauses the ep) i could ask the same thing! Because why are they zooming in on you all the time? Whats going on my Blondie? (And Brandon is back on screen) whats up with Baywatch wannabe? Brian is actually talking about his problems to Justin? SEE GROWTH! Why is he so passive aggressive to him?’ ‘Emy, Brian was telling you the truth. Oh shit, what is he gonna do? Fuck someone on live tv? *forgets about the cast and goes to make a fist* FUCK. I cant have anything this season’ and we’re at the scene where Brandon is there during Brian’s meeting ‘okay who the fuck is he and why is he everywhere? How rude up to tell Bri he doesn’t have fears about aging meanwhile he’s ready to jump out a window over it. Why does Brian even care about Baywatch? I feel like even though it would bother him, he’d act like he doesnt give a fuck. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!’ Em is talking about underwear on tv ‘oh god, oh god. I wish this was real news but holy fucking shit. I need Emmett back at party planning. SEE EM, BRIAN WAS RIGHT! Everyone is always rude to him but he’s the only one who tells the truth’ and Britin is at the house warming party *he sees Monty/Ely* ‘ughh i forgot they existed. I dont get how they can be friends with them? Is it cause of the whole birds of the feather thing? Aka boring and annoying attracts? (Mikey introduces JR and it shows Hunter) WHAT ABOUT HUNTER?! I swear they forgot about him. (Brian and Em/Ted bump into each other) Why is Emmett angry? We all know he was telling the truth….a bit rudely but fuck it. Why is Emy lying? *looks at me shocked* is it possible that Lindsays hair got worse? (Ben pulls out the Rage comics) oh no, i still hate this. (Monty/eli speak up)WHY ARE THESE TWO DUDES SO OBSESSED WITH EVERYONE BEING MARRIED WITH KIDS?! Oh i just know Blondie was hiding this from Bri. Id be annoyed too. WHATS WITH THE ZOOM IN ON BLONDIE?’
he somehow convinced himself that he was just reading too much into Justin’s behavior previous episodes and that he misunderstood Randy’s performance and that all will be okay - oh noooooo Brother Anon, you are not wrong but tens of us wish you were.
I love that your brother was mourning Freddie and made the bartender put on Queen and listen to him talk about QAF. Are we surrrreeee your brother isn't a little queer?
Oh my god, he's Debbie. If Debbie were a man.
HE TURNED BRIAN DOWN? Bri Bri, i would never treat you like that! <- UM exactly
His horror at the Rage wedding issue is appropriate and correct. WHYYYYY.
I love how much he hates Monty/Eli
And how much he appreciates that Brian tells Emmett the truth. Look, would you rather have people who blindly support you in your life or would you rather have a Brian?
And yes, the entire "OUR CHILD JR" and completely neglecting Hunter smh.

The other day my husband was like, "ok I really need to confess that I like (my best friend's husband) less and less every time we interact" and it was such a RELIEF
And we talked for like an hour about all the reasons she deserves better and why he went from "kind of boring and moderate politically but overall nice" to "spineless, truly only cares about himself and people he personally knows, low empathy for anyone else, increasingly finding out how conservative he is, and treats my best friend *fine* but not at all *how amazing as she deserves* and also so fucking white bread stick in the mud etc"
And it sucks because he's not abusive, he's not mean, he's fine. He does shit that incredibly pisses me off but like, it's not stuff that's egregious to her.
The best way to explain it is, she is straight upper middle class and very privileged; and like in college she would always always fall for moderate to conservative guys, homophobes, etc and is just willing to overlook and forgive SO MUCH in a man, like.... she'll just shrug and be like idk it doesn't affect me and he's nice to x people Overall even if he thinks x politically and whatever
And I'm the rabid queer feminist friend who is like frothing at the mouth bc she's liberal and I'm like WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE DOESNT BELIEVE IN ABORTION BUT KNOWS YOU DONT WANT KIDS
To her credit she doesn't excuse homophobia or transphobia etc anymore bc she has moralls yall, really fucking good ones, but she still agrees to disagree on so much shit that I could never
And I just look at her moderate to conservative husband and his shitty truly awful family and speaking as someone who had to go no contact with their in laws, and my husband is low contact with them, I'm like GIRL DO IT. TRUST YOUR GUT. THEY FUCKING SUCK AND IF YOU MOVE STATES TO LIVE CLOSER TO THEM LIKE YOUR HUSBAND WANTS, YOU WILL BE ABSOLUTELY ALONE AND AWAY FROM EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU LOVE AND THEY WILL *D E S T R O Y* YOU
They literally cause so incredibly much drama in her life from halfway across the country and are not nice to each other or her, do not communicate like literally the worst communicators most secret keeping bullshit people I've ever had the displeasure of meeting, they're so fucking awful and he wants her to leave every single thing and person she knows to live near them. He literally moved to our state temporarily, made friends, fell in love, and chose to marry someone who said they never wanted to leave this state, chose to stay here, has a whole life and friends and support system up here plus her family are the kindest most loving and generous people, and now he's like no we need to move to my state and my shitty unsupportive family in a state where you don't have friends like I do here, where you have less rights, etc
I want to scream
I'll never tell her any of this unless they divorce, of course, but I really can't see him ever doing anything bad enough for that in her eyes
I just. Yeah. I like him less every time we talk and I'm glad my husband and I are on the same page and it's frustrating.

eyyy kinda wanted to dissect the list on the wiki of "lgbtq characters in fallout" so here we go
I dont remember everything and only from my perspective but this is exactly "how much gay" i think there is to each of these characters
Tumblr media
davin, miria, and leslie are all more or less "playersexual" if i remember right. i dont remember any dialogue that directly mentions their sexualities...but maaaaybe? its been a while since ive touched fo2. Oddly enough i do remember a random female npc in (i think) vault city who you could randomly flirt with and then she turns down a female chosen one, and i think she said something kinda homophobic to you instead? fo2 was the first game in the market to have same gender marriage, even if it's just playersexuality. so hey. it was progressive for its time tbqh
i never played F:BOS but ruby is a prostitute and has unique dialogue for sleeping with men or women so, yay representation, i guess
carol and greta are kinda gay? its implied. More implied then some. she calls her "my greta" and they sleep in the same bed or something. thats pretty ok.
Elaine, angela, dobson, alan are all just mentioned in notes you find in the mojave
Veronica has unique dialogue depending on the couriers gender, if your male she'll say something like "only if your a leggy burnette" and if your a female she says "buy me dinner first", she also has dialogue about her relationship with christine and how the BoS disapprove of same sex relationships bc they want offspring
alex has unique dialogue for male couriers if you have the confirmed bachelor perk, and at the end of the credits for the wild wasteland perk it says hes a man who likes men
arcade has unique dialogue with a male courier where you can flirt with him if you have confirmed bachelor. he says he want a man to sweep him off his feet, and he says the only woman in his life is Daisy, his mother figure
betsy flirts with a female courier and turns down a male courier, and she has dialogue about being only into women (this was kinda vague in my brain but i know its pretty explicit)
Cass has one line that says she will sleep with anyone when she is drunk
jimmy refuses to sleep with female couriers, and if you are a female courier he tells you his story about how he escaped the legion as a slave since they kill any gay legionaries
knight has unique dialogue with a male courier with the confirmed bachelor perk and tells you about how the mojave part of ncr is a little bit more homophobic then the CA part for some reason (fair enough though, its nevada) and fixes your gear for free
christine "signs" to you her background with her veronica, granted i think you need to have high-ish perception to understand it
Mel has unique dialogue with bobbie when your a male sole survivor, calling you "easy on the eyes" or something, but doesnt have that dialogue for female ones. it was very short and not expanded on lol
deb and kay are marked as married in the creation kit, nothing in game
duff and scara have kinda couple-like dialogue with each other, and in dialogue notes it says theyre a couple, nothing in game
miranda has one line of dialogue (behind a charisma check) about how she trusted a female wastelander, gave her caps, and then that wastelander left to diamond city and married a man
andre is a dying man who you heal with a medic check (otherwise he dies), and when he wakes up he tells you how his husband john died by fog crawlers or whatever, so he wants to go out and die trying to fight them. you then need to pass a charisma check to stop him from killing himself via large crabs
johns the dead guy
is mckinney lgbtq? the robobrain? apparently, the wiki says he mentions he loved ezra, the robobrain who was embezzling and then murdered that other robobrain and then took her identity. okay. (i completely missed this because personally i didnt like this quest that much).
i have never played fallout 76 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
honestly with this kind of criteria, i would argue more characters in fnv should be on this list?? Manny should be on the list since you could flirt with him as a male courier. like idk its very flimsy, and if your going to stick character that were only gay through notes in the script, you might as well just stick any character that sorta maybe kinda could possibly be lgbtq lmao
and also ive always hated how lgbtq characters backstories/sexuality are sometimes "locked" behind certain stat checks and perks. granted, its way better then it only being mentioned in the creation kit, but like. idk. i dont think its right for the only bi/gay representation you really get can only happen if you have specific stats or perks while theres pleeeeeenty of M/F backstories and dialogue in these games that are just... there, without needing high charisma or speech or a perk or whatever. the confirmed bachelor/charchez la femme perk is a neat idea but i dont hink it should have ben the biggest factor for seeing lgbtq representation in FNV, since it essentially "hides" the content from cis/het people who dont want to see it...if that makes sense. like its playing it kinda safe you know :/

Hello! I just wanted to say that your fic the sun within me was the only fic I read that got naruto's character spot on when it comes to internalized homophobia and I really appreciate it 🥲. I feel like it was quite telling that in the manga naruto was the only character that would overreact to anything gay. When kakashi said he likes naruto, when naruto went to a bathhouse with sai and yamato, when he backtracked after complimenting sasuke's looks, when he was angsting over sasuke and sai/sakura asked him what he was thinking about he said a date with sakura even though he was actually thinking about sasuke, when kurama brings up that sasuke was his only kiss, no one reacted like something gay/gross was happening except naruto. I've seen people use this as proof that naruto isn't gay, but I think it was the opposite. There's just too many romantic tropes in the manga for it to be a coincidence and I really felt like you understood naruto and sasuke's bond when i read your fic. It felt like I was actually reading about naruto and sasuke and how they'd view sexuality. Usually I don't really feel this way when reading fanfiction that takes place in canon universe because authors never bring up the fact that naruto is suffering from internalized homophobia and go right into him and sasuke getting together and sasuke is usually a confident gay guy with some experience. I don't have a problem with this but it was so refreshing to read something that was so close to what they'd be like in the manga so thank you 😊
(I'm not sure if I just haven't found fics that got their characters so right or what but i wouldn't mind if someone could point me in the right direction 🙈)
Hi!
Thank you so much, that's a lot of high praise💖💖💖
I agree with you, the way Naruto reacted is just... I really wonder what Kishi was thinking when he wrote it. I guess we'll never know for sure, but to me all those scenes where Naruto makes exaggerated excuses and very loudly denies things that the others seem to find not-at-all romantic or sexual, but clearly HE worries that it does, really makes it seem like he's suffering from a lot of internalized homophobia. Either that or he'd have to be just straight up homophobic, since no one else reacts like him. Take the scene where Konohamaru transforms into the Sai/Sasuke sandwich. Sakura reacts with a nosebleed right? So homosexuality or at least some version of porn with same-sex couples have to exist, otherwise she wouldn't react like she's seen it before. Whether that was just thrown in for fanservice or whatever, it's still there in the canon manga. Naruto really embodies the "we can't allow gay marriage bc then every guy would just marry a guy and the population will die out" mindset lmao.
It makes sense that Naruto won't let himself think of Sasuke (consciously) in romantic terms in the manga, even taking out Kishi's reasons for writing it and the fact that it's shounen and "supposed to be straight and the hero gets the girl in the end". Many people have pointed out that if you switch Sasuke's gender to a girl, it's all incredibly romantic and there would be zero discourse on them being the certain end couple. There are only so many times a character can cross the "bromance" line and backtrack as if afraid people will notice without being interpreted as gay and in heavy denial about it. But Naruto is a character who desperately wants to fit in, even though he can't give up on the things important to him despite those things making him fit in less. If he gave up on Sasuke, he'd get more approval. But instead he's obsessively determined to bring him back. Of course, the story wouldn't be as good if he wasn't, but it makes a lot more sense if he loves Sasuke. (And I think in canon it's clear that he does love Sasuke, but you can't really say "here's a line that proves he loves him in a gay way")
And I don't mean "he's got a crush on Sasuke". Sakura had a crush on Sasuke and no one thought it was weird that she tried to bring him back, despite having very little connection aside from being teammates. But Naruto, who already at that age had a really deep connection with Sasuke, was constantly treated by others as if his feelings of friendship were easily dismissable. All of that is very strange unless you think of it from Konoha's perspective: A: no one took Sakura seriously so there was no point discouraging her much, also she wasn't an important asset to the village (didn't risk losing the kyuubi) B: no one ever dreamt in their wildest fantasies that Naruto felt anything other than shallow teammate feelings for Sasuke and couldn't even begin to understand why he needed to chase after him C: Kakashi actually understood everything and was too traumatized to do anything about it.
As for Sasuke and sexuality, I just don't see him thinking much about it bc he just expected to die fighting Itachi. And then suddenly he has to navigate life back in the village... I don't think he would expect Naruto's feelings to be romantic in any sense because I think he simply wouldn't consider it. Why would he? And he doesn't seem like the person to go out and sleep around with people in Konoha, of all places... So I don't think he would have any experience, at least not at that age, and therefore not come to any conclusions about his own sexuality.
I don't mind reading other things either! But when writing a canon fic these are things that really stand out to me about their relationship. So it's always nice to hear that someone else feels the same way🥰
And if anyone has any recs I'd love that too!

please share your thoughts on how you think mike’s identity/coming out would impact his family/himself. (this is mostly bc i saw that rlly good post of yours talking ab how ted would be really quietly homophobic but that doesn’t mean he’s LESS homophobic)
i think that if mike came out ted would pretend it didn’t happen. he’d never acknowledge it openly, but he’d distance himself even more. if mike had a boyfriend he’d say stuff like “is your friend coming over today” even though he knows they’re dating lol. once mike moves out, they’d probably only speak to each other on holidays.
karen would be different. she feels like she’s wasting her life in the name of conformity. like i implied in this post, she wants to keep mike and nancy from making the same mistakes she did. she’d probably try to talk to ted about mike, but he’d reply with things like “he’ll grow out of it” “he’s confused” etc. he would NEVER say the word gay, probably not homosexual either, and DEFINITELY not slurs. (the man hates swearing guys)
the wheelers, to me, represent the sadness of the “perfect” family. they have plenty of money, married parents, three kids, all of them smart and doing well in school, but they’re still not happy. almost every other family in the show has gone through incredibly difficult things— abuse, divorce, poverty— but the wheelers have none of that. they’re the ideal, the american dream. and like that idealized version of life, the wheelers are only perfect when viewed from the outside. they’re obsessed with appearances— nancy dating steve, karen marrying ted, mike’s apparent comphet and just all of his behavior in s3– but each of these things aren’t true to who they really are.
so really i believe that the wheelers’ story is centered around rejecting societal norms and expectations in order to be happy. nancy is the most obvious example of this, and karen has certainly shown it as well. mike is the only one still completely wrapped up in who he “should” be, which is why i think it would take a MASSIVE amount of development for him to be comfortable coming out to someone. (he’s not even out to himself !)
this has gotten very rambly and idk if it’s still even answering the question at this point but yeah

... I’m interested in legitimately gay Reese (I assume one piece of evidence is “look at what they’re doing and tell me you’re not gay”)
okay this is like 2 days late but this is why reese malcolminthemiddle is legitimately gay:
(side note: did anyone need a queer media thesis paper or something... I am willing to share lmao)
so none of this is like... rock solid evidence or anything but I need to believe at least one main character of a show is gay and/or trans to maintain interest and reese is the most plausible gay character. also it’s early 2000′s so he just gets a lot of vaguely homophobic jokes lmao
first of all, yes, the biggest piece of evidence he’s gay is those lines from that episode I quoted the other day--thinking malcolm is gay, he tries to show his support by giving him a gay porno: “’Naught Pool Boys 3!’ I watched 10 or 12 of these, and this one seems to have the most stuff you guys like.” and when malcolm says he isn’t gay, reese responds “Malcolm. Check out what those guys are doing in that movie, and THEN tell me you’re not gay.”-- so, 1) reese sat down and watched like a dozen gay porn movies to ““find a good one for his gay brother”” and 2) he thinks malcolm would reconsider his heterosexuality if he watched what was in that movie, implying that HE reconsidered his sexuality after watching that movie, or at the very least found it hot
in the same episode, the character tricking malcolm into thinking reese is gay lists the following as evidence: he obsesses over his hair and his looks, loves his gourmet cooking, has a bunch of magazines covered in comically muscular men, and that he’s angry and acts like a jerk because he’s “dealing with something weird and confusing.” now obviously, the obsession with hair/looks can be chalked up to the fact that he’s a teenage boy, and there’s nothing inherently gay about enjoying cooking. the dozen magazines of muscle-bound men could certainly be taken as gay evidence, though, and it IS established in the show that his entire bully persona is his way of masking his inner feelings and insecurities. there’s literally a whole episode where he & malcolm realize they have no friends because they act like little shits to push people away because they’re afraid of rejection and/or abandonment from their peers. they ostracize themselves before they can be ostracized by the other students at school. I could probably write a whole other essay on reese’s psyche tbqh lmao there’s a shocking amount there!!
of the brothers who are actually old enough to be attracted to girls (reese, malcolm, and francis), he shows the least interest. now bear with me here. you might be thinking, “well, yeah, it’s malcolm’s show, we’re not gonna see things from other people’s perspective!” but that is actually surprisingly untrue, the show is very much equally shown from each family members’ perspectives. starting about s2, when malcolm is in early middle school, he starts getting crushes on girls and pursuing them. francis goes after a few women in the first couple seasons and then marries a woman we see a lot throughout the show.
in the roughly... 130?? episodes I have watched so far, nearly all of reese’s “interest” in girls involve either: competition with malcolm, genuinely just liking her as a friend, or some completely ulterior motive. the only exception to this I can think of is in the early seasons where he has a crush on a cheerleader and tries to get on her good side by joining the cheerleading squad, which the writers clearly set up as a way to make gay jokes about reese. let me give you a few examples of his relationships with girls
the first relationship we see him in is with a “stupid girl” that malcolm tried (and failed) to date, and the main reason they get together is that they think on the same wavelength and genuinely seem to enjoy hanging out. they take breaks from their bro chats to make out every once in a while. eventually he gets her to break up with him because he doesn’t want to go to the school dance with her (he doesn’t want to go at all). years later, he’s dating some girl we meet for like 5 minutes, before he goes to confess to her that she’s the first girl he’s ever loved. she then breaks up with him. he’s sad, but taking it fairly well. he’s about to leave when he sees malcolm hiding under the bed, and learns that he stole his girlfriend. he then runs away to join the army. he was clearly MUCH more upset that his brother stole his girlfriend than he was that his girlfriend broke up with him. there are many more instances of him and malcolm competing for a girl’s affections, and he seems mostly motivated by the competition itself.
in addition to “stupid girl,” he also manufactures an “attraction” to his female army buddy in the last season. the premise of this episode is that his old army buddy (a girl he play-wrestles with and insults like he would his own brothers) comes to visit him, and malcolm convinces reese that she’s attracted to him, and that reese’s nervousness at learning that fact is proof he’s in love with her. there’s a misunderstanding where reese asks her if she has certain “feelings” and she says she does, but what she ACTUALLY means is that she has a crush on reese’s MOM. she’s a lesbian. reese later propositions her (saying he’s saved his virginity for this--he’s probably about 18 here), and when she says omg no im gay, he is HUGELY relieved they can go back to being friends. CLASSIC mlm/wlw friendship moment.
there’s an episode where these cute girls pick up reese (& nerds) to kiss in front of their boyfriends to make them jealous. reese is all for it, and when malcolm argues that it’s not worth his dignity and the beating he’ll get from the girl’s boyfriend, reese counters that that’s WHY he wants to do this--he’s completely invisible at school, and thinks getting beaten up for kissing some guy’s girlfriend will at least make him known around school. at no point does he indicate he’s actually attracted to this girl, and when it comes time to kiss her, he finds the weakest excuse to run away at the last minute.
im not gonna list all of these but there’s more lmao
the following is a random assortment of one-off gay jokes and out-of-context lines with gay reese implications, often homophobically bc its early 2000′s writing:
says “I’m gay” to a girl to give malcolm a better shot at her
(again in competition with malcolm) tries to flirt with a girl by spraying milk in her face as the punchline to a joke, which is. well. hm. self-sabotaging, to say the least!!
Reese: “Do you think it’s right to totally change who you are and turn your back on EVERYTHING you believe in, just to impress a hot guy??” [his dad gives a long, blank stare, before asking:] “...Burt Reynolds hot, or Sting hot?”
“YEAH I like clouds! I call them sky kittens :)” (I just think that one’s sweet!)
“Look, Christie, here’s the thing. When I first met you, I was just messing around. But we’ve gotten so close that, now... I really like you! I can’t keep this up anymore. I’m not the person you think I am. I’ve been pretending since the day I met you. It’s so hard having to constantly cover my tracks to keep my story straight... and I don’t WANT to anymore! I’m tired of living this lie! I’m done with it. I’m sorry.”
he catfishes some guy to blackmail him, but is implied to continue the flirtation even after the catfishing/blackmail is revealed
reese is, technically, married to a man. this particular plot point is played as a joke and manages to be both racist and homophobic, so I won’t go into it. but I believe he is still married to that man. technically.
reese takes care of a huge box full of caterpillars until they pupate and become beautiful butterflies. I feel like there’s some kind of gay coming out metaphor here somewhere.
I think there are a couple other times where he comments on a guy’s attractiveness but I couldn’t find specific instances.
In conclusion: Reese is a deeply repressed gay kid who was socialized SO thoroughly as an early 2000′s straight boy that, despite his attraction for men and his obvious compulsory heterosexuality, he still cannot admit to himself that he is gay even as he enters adulthood. Furthermore, his subconscious frustration about this fact is turned outward to form the “schoolyard bully” costume he uses to mask his insecurities and keep others from getting too close to him.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. I could be convinced to come back for another talk about how Dewey is trans or about how each and every member of that family is neurodivergent in entirely different ways. Assuming anyone has read this far in the first place!!

i know this is an unpopular/controversial opinion, but ross geller really got a raw deal, especially early on in the show.
i won’t deny that he got worse and worse as the seasons wore on (although I maintain that he was flanderized so badly primarily so that he would distract from how terrible everyone else also was), but i really can’t blame him for being as bitter as he was about carol and susan’s relationship and everything, especially early on, that surrounded carol’s pregnancy and the weird family unit they were trying to form. and i genuinely don’t think it would have been any different (in fact, it probably would’ve been even worse) if susan were a man.
like, look at it from his perspective. he was married to a woman he thought was the love of his life. they were married for seven years! he was like, what, thirty tops at the beginning of the series? they got married when he was twenty-three and were together nearly a quarter of his life by the time they got divorced. and she didn’t just divorce him and immediately get together with someone else--she told him she was gay, meaning that she’d never been in love with him to begin with, and she’d been cheating on him for quite some time as she discovered this about herself. this is played for laughs a lot later in the series, as is ross’ reaction and subsequent depression about it, but like? that had to have been absolutely devastating.
and then ross couldn’t even make a clean break and allow himself to move on, because she turned out to be pregnant with his child. a child that, if he wanted to be a father and in its life (and he absolutely had the right! it was just as much his child as carol’s! that early episode where he’s framed as unreasonable for wanting the kid to have his name, especially if it was also going to have susan’s, always leaves a bad taste in my mouth), he had to deal with constant reminders of the fact that the woman he was in love with was not only in love with someone else, but had never been in love with him to begin with.
i’d be bitter, angry, and probably hate ‘the other woman’ too.
like i said, he gets worse and worse as the series goes on. he’s basically the show’s butt-monkey (though ross, at his best, is actually a pretty good guy--i always remember the moment when carol’s parents refused to attend her and susan’s wedding because they were homophobes, and ross put his own understandably raw feelings aside to walk carol down the aisle), and he makes for a good distraction to keep the audience from thinking about what awful people the other five are (in a funny twist of fate, the best of them is probably joey, but it’s a pretty low bar to clear), but i always feel a little sad that it’s the only thing he’s remembered for bc like... he was in a supremely fucked up situation in the early seasons and no one seems to remember that. it’s always ‘haha susan always dunks on ross’ and rarely ever ‘well, ross has a pretty good reason to dislike susan, since she was having an affair with his wife before he even knew she was gay’.

It's interesting how I've seen lately a couple of people bringing up, here and there, how cql is at fault for jc stans' wrong stance on his character bc I have wanted to ask you for a while what were your thoughts on cql!jc in particular... I mean, I know cql isn't a fave of yours anyways so I thought maybe there was no point to it anyways.
And, the thing is, I haven't read mdzs yet and I've only watched the donghua and cql and still... I've always had mixed feelings about him, which is funny bc- yes, in the end, he was softened there but even with that fact, that didn't made me like him. Now, I do prefer cql's but like I said, it wasn't enough to like LIKE him. And after a bunch of musing about why it was like that, I think I found out why. You see, if I had to list my top 5 charas from this universe, that would be: xy, wwx, xxc, lwj and wn. So you can see it's not as if I have a type as in "I love villains and bad boys" OR "I have a soft spot for heroes and good boys", there IS variety in what I like but no matter what are the flaws in a character, jc had one that I particularly despise: he's ungrateful. And he was ungrateful in the most disgusting way. To a lot of people, to the wens, to wwx himself... So even if we don't see him doing the terrible things he did in the novel (which in the end, maybe I would care like, xy is my fave so srsly, it's not about morals as such but having characteristics that aren't my cup of tea) and being homophobic and all that, he has one of the worst traits someone can have imo which is ungratefulness.
Finally, another thing I noticed is how contradictory his character was regarding his feelings for wwx. Look, I lean more towards this not being wzc's fault but the script but, the thing with cql!jc was that you sometimes could feel he genuinely cared about wwx and two second later it was like he genuinely hated him ??? I can't help but think the reason was that the cql staff fell into their own trap of wanting to make him more sympathetic and likeable but since he still needed to be one of the main antagonists for the pilot's sake, it became this contradictory mess...
Yeah, my personal breaking point for JC is the homophobia (which show-only fans wouldn’t know about) but... he’s got a lot of aspects of his character that are going to be Too Much for a given person! He’s just one of those characters. And yeah, the ungratefulness is... a lot. But honestly CQL JC just confuses me. I don’t know what they were going for with him? On one hand they try really hard to focus on how he’s sad and conflicted in a way the novel doesn’t (because... well, he’s not either of those things in the novel) and they quietly drop the bit where he leads the slaughter of a civilian population because he’s decided that the only way to assuage the pain he feels about what happened to Lotus Pier is to inflict it on others, but on the other hand... he really does straight up tell a woman that she can either marry him or die and he won’t lift a finger to help her if she doesn’t give him what she wants (and won’t do anything for her family either way) despite having the necessary information to save her without marrying her. I can’t speak to the overall quality of WZC’s performance; personally I thought it was pretty bad (god, the overacting, please calm down sir, you look like you learned how to act from a kindergartner), but I’m hardly an expert. But yeah, definitely at least part of the issue was the script. I don’t think the writers were entirely sure what to do with a character like JC, who starts (chronologically) as an ally and gradually becomes an antagonist partway through. I don’t know how much of that was censorship and how much was poor writing, but “confused” is the word that comes to mind looking at JC’s CQL characterization. His role as an antagonist is too important to cut and relies too much on his relationship with WWX to give to someone else, but they either didn’t want or weren’t allowed to just make him an antagonist so we get this... weird, uncertain mix of “loving brother” and “open antagonist”. They wanted him to be a good guy, but the story wouldn’t allow that. This is a lesson about not trying to force an adaptation to obey what you want with zero regard for the source material, and definitely not without bothering to fit the rest of the story around that change.

Modern Merlin AU — With Gays and Churches
Slight CW for religious homophobia, and ofc I know that the majority of Christians are loving and beautiful people 💕
**
The Cast:
Uther: A firmly anti-gay pastor who is well known and mostly respected by the congregation and the community.
Ygraine: Uther's ex wife who divorced him after she found about an affair he had once had with a woman who named Vivian.
Arthur: Their son, who lives entirely with Uther and attends a religious school nearby.
Leon: Arthur's friend who also attends that school, who's parents have been going to Uther's church for years and years.
Merlin: A boy who recently joined the school after moving with his uncle, who teaches there. Also a closeted gay.
Gaius: An old friend of Uther's, a teacher at the school, and the only other person who knows about the affair.
Morgana: Uther's child from his affair with Vivian. She moves in with Uther when she's 10, since her mother can't financially support them both anymore.
Gwen: A girl at the school, who Arthur dates briefly in order to "prove" that he is straight.
Elyan: Gwen's brother, who lived with more distant family for a few years and has recently returned.
All other "round table" knights: New kids (they arrive at different times) who's parents have recently converted to Christianity and enrolled them in the school. Gwaine's family actually came from another church but he doesn't talk about that much, since he's not actually religious himself. Also Gwaine picks fights with homophobic teachers.
Kilgharrah: Either an angel, a demon, God Himself, or the school principal, I can't decide. Whichever he is, he occasionally pops up to give both Merlin and Arthur utterly useless life advice, in whatever form that takes depending on who he is. If he's somehow celestial, it's probably through sarcastic comments in dreams. If he's the school principal, he's just... That teacher that decides that stopping you in the corridor to Impart Words Of Adult Wisdom is a great use of everyone's time.
**
The Plot:
Uther becomes pastor at a church, and marries Ygraine. She disagrees with many of his views, but doesn't speak up about them, wanting to be a "good wife". That is, until she discovers that he once had an affair with a woman named Vivian and gave her a child. Ygraine then quietly divorces him and leaves, too afraid of making a fuss to try to get custody of Arthur. Uther tells everyone, including Arthur, that it was her choice to leave and that she willingly parted from the ways of the Lord. No one knows about the affair except him, her, and Vivian (and Gaius).
Arthur grows up with only Uther, not having many close friends, only Leon, who he's known his whole life and who's parents are also very religious. When Arthur is around 10, Vivian turns up on their doorstep, insisting that she has fallen into financial trouble, and cannot look after her child anymore. Uther takes Morgana in, insisting it was an act of charity on his behalf, and that Vivian was only an old friend. Everyone believes he is being a good samaritan, but secretly he hopes that if he "redeems" his child to the church, he may find redemption for what he did. Arthur and Morgana are the same age, and Uther begs Morgana not to tell Arthur the truth (threatening her for if she does), so he doesn't know she's his sister. They get on, mostly, but Arthur's a bit of a prat in lecturing her about God sometimes because he thinks that's how you make friends.
Anyway, a few years later, when Arthur is around 14, Merlin joins his school (they're roughly the same age here, Merlin only a few months younger.) He was sent to his uncle by his mother, since he came out to her and she didn't accept him. She wanted him to go to church and a religious school to "fix" him. He now lives with Gaius, and goes back into the closet for the time he's at school. He quickly becomes friends with Gwaine, who doesn't have many friends and is constantly in trouble for arguing with bigoted teachers.
Because he's really academic, Uther asks Gaius if it would be possible for Merlin to come round and help tutor Arthur in order to catch Arthur up with his studies, so Merlin starts coming around every Tuesday and Thursday. They slowly become friends, despite Merlin being quite rude, and Arthur having the most frustrating "holier than thou" attitude because he's the priest's son. Merlin develops a crush on him, and quickly gives up on trying to deny his sexuality to himself, but he can't tell Arthur, or anyone else.
In time, Merlin stops being so afraid of his own sexuality, and sneaks off to a pride parade and attends an LGBT group a couple of times. Gaius suspects what he might be doing, but says nothing.
When Morgana turns 16, she tells them all that she thinks she might be a lesbian. She's scared, but hopes that Uther may be understanding. Instead, he kicks her out, despite Arthur's protests that it isn't fair. She goes to live with some friends in similar situations, and over the next few months, cuts off Uther completely, changes school, and starts regularly attending LGBTQ+ events and just generally living her best lesbian life.
This makes Uther incredibly angry, and he takes it out on Arthur a lot, who starts going to Gaius and Merlin's after school to avoid him. He texts Morgana a bit, but is afraid to keep close contact with her, and still sees homosexuality as a sin. However, this whole situation has made him actually think about his own sexuality, and he's now afraid that maybe HE himself isn't totally straight. To prove that he is to himself, he asks Gwen on a date, but he can't ever truly like her, and she knows that.
At the same time, Merlin is trying to get rid of his crush on Arthur because he doesn't want to ruin that friendship, so he starts going to pride groups weekly, to meet others. He meets Will, a trans guy, and they almost date for a while, but Merlin can't commit to it because of his own feelings. Morgana happens to meet him there, and at first that interaction is a little awkward, but instead of pressuring him, she just gives him a hug, and tells him it's okay, she's learnt that now. She'll always be here for him if he needs to feel safe away from Uther/Arthur, or the school as a whole. He tells her that he hopes Arthur could be different from his father, and she says she hopes so, but she doesn't believe he would be — he seems to hate her too now. But that's okay. She's got a new family now. She's happy.
And then, eventually, Arthur comes to accept his own feelings, and Gwen does hers. He talks to Merlin about how he isn't sure if he's straight, and eventually they date, and then kiss. Gwen has a Bisexual Awakening™, and she reconnects with Morgana (they were friends before Morgana left) and they date too. Hunith (who's been having a side plot of researching things and learning and becoming a better, more accepting person) comes to stay with Gaius for a while, and tells Merlin she loves him, and will always love him no matter who he's with, and she's sorry she never said that before now.
When Arthur turns 18, his mother reaches out to him. She was too afraid to risk upsetting Uther and the church before, but she wants to know if he's okay. He's angry at her for all the years she was silent, and all the things he didn't know, and for leaving him, but in time, she tells him the truth. Morgana also tells Arthur the truth, knowing now that he doesn't blindly believe his father, and this won't tear a rift between them. Uther's affair is then revealed to the whole congregation, most of whom are appalled, and his reputation is ruined. The church gets a new pastor.
Some of the kids realise that they don't need religion to be valid and happy, and others realise that they can have both religion and love, and God can love them no matter who they are with. Both are okay, and everyone accepts everyone. They all live their best, gayest, cutest, and happiest lives.
***
Feel free to add stuff I love this concept. Also someone needs to write something like this and tag me bc I cannot write this myself — I'm incapable of managing the 3 fics I'm writing at the moment.

here’s all my hcs about gay brba/bcs characters’ relationships to and experience with their homosexuality just for funsies
gus - understood himself to be totally disinterested in girls since like age 8, didn’t realize that that meant he was interested in boys until his late teens. had really no hangups about it, as he already knew that he wasn’t like other men and would never be like them, so this didn’t make a difference. def had some one-off sexual experience while serving in the chilean military but frankly didn’t even imagine he would ever be in a serious relationship until he met max
max - knew from a young age due to being in love with a childhood best friend, but had his heart broken. dealt with internal shame over it for a while, but by his mid-20s was kind of working his way through all the other gay men in the communist party of chile. it never worked out with them for more than a month or so. and of course he finally shacked up with a literal member of the junta fgfdfvfds
mike - the lack of ANY canon details about his marriage other than that it lasted 22 years, including the fact that he never even says the word “wife”, makes me wanna think that his spouse wasn’t even a woman. i’m thinking two possibilities: 1) he had a kid with a woman who ran off after the fact, leaving him a single father, and soon after he privately “married” a man who acted as a second father to matty, or 2) his husband was trans. in any case due to the time period i have to think he was deeply closeted for much of his life, perhaps he gave in and went to a gay bar after returning home from the vietnam war and that’s where he met his future husband.
gale - no way that that fruit was ever NOT obvious. he’s always been THE weird gay kid and he’s owned it. he was the head of UNM’s GSA, he’s organized pride parades, he’s written spirk fanfic, the whole nine yards. the only thing that’s kept him from long-term relationships are his strong controversial opinions. also definitely has a crush on gus.
nacho - has known he’s gay most of his life, likely initially through a crush on domingo, but has remained completely in the closet in order to maintain his image and his safety. if it were just his relationship with his father that he was worried about, he could get away with simply not being obvious about having a bf - but he’s also stuck in the deeply homophobic environment that is the cartel. hence the two entire girlfriends. they maintain his cover (whether they know they’re a cover or not) and in return, he takes care of them. when he’s feeling particularly pent-up and can find the time, he’ll go out to a gay club to hook up. but the closest thing he’s had to a meaningful relationship with another man are the feelings he used to have (and still occasionally gets) for domingo and the dynamic he has with lalo.
lalo - due to his environment, he could unfortunately comprehend sex long before he could comprehend romance - but even with lust being the only thing on the table, he’d grown up without having his desires questioned and so he still confidently knew that he only wanted it with men. the salamancas could always tell that something was “off” about him and he could tell that they could tell, but he knew that ultimately nothing would be done about it as long as he served the family. so he’s never bothered to really keep it a secret. he’s had many flings and treated them all seriously, knowing well enough that his affections would fade and that he would move on after a bit. nacho’s likely the first one to challenge that, as he’s the first guy to also be in the cartel and not fear him and therefore to really Get him.
howard - realized through a fling with jimmy, back when he worked in the mailroom. started with a drunken makeout in a closet at an HHM christmas party, turned into a series of rendevous that ended when jimmy decided that howard was ashamed of him and that he’d only ever be howard’s dirty little secret. the truth was that howard’s reputation and therefore privilege was on the line, and he just couldn’t risk that becoming known about him. and he likely doesn’t become ready to let people know that until after chuck’s death, after he’s gotten therapy. in the meantime he’s neglected to get married and has honestly probably been pining for jimmy the whole time.
jimmy - not gay but bi, but still included here bc i gotta. similar to gus his realization that he liked men was just like “ok cool just another way i’m unique :)”. he had it in highschool when following through with a drunken dare to suck a dick, and he also realized that he was pretty good at it. tbh i think he might’ve done it as a side-gig whenever the scams he pulled with marco were coming up a little dry. it’s very fitting that he later gets repeatedly told he’s The Guy With The Mouth.

ok! i’ve got the beginning and end written, it’s the middle that i need to write still, and it’s disgustingly sweet (i’ll post it to ao3 when i’ve got it finished bc i refuse to upload an unfinished work). also lemme know if you wanna read the ending as well, i wasn’t sure (it, too, is fluffy to hell and back)
Chapter 1:
Tim hated this. He hated it all. He’d rather be anywhere else in the world if he could, he could’ve been at home in his room with his laptop and Jay to talk to, but instead he was here with his mom who thought that she had any right to his life after leaving it for good (when he was twelve years old in a mental hospital too, who did that to their child?) and apparently forgot why she did, since she wouldn’t shut up. He’d had enough by the third hour of the “vacation” she took him to, and maybe if he hadn’t hated pity as much as he did, especially from the one that caused him to be pitied, he would have enjoyed the five-star hotel stay more, rather than feel like he was stuck in one long panic attack. He had managed to get away, though. He excused himself to the bathroom and felt grateful she had allowed him that much. He didn’t pay too much attention to the walk to the bathroom - he was trying to breathe in and out regularly and count to ten and pay attention to what he felt and all the other coping methods they taught him in the ten years he spent in the psych ward. He only realized there was someone else in the bathroom when the person (Tim assumed they were male, this was the men’s bathroom) sighed and firmly said, “I need more time, you can’t just ruin my entire life to gain a few weeks.”
Brian had really been looking forward to the week he’d spend on his own - privacy and being alone weren’t really concepts that his family understood, and it had only gotten worse when the marriage proposal came. He’d tried to explain countless times that he was gay and that he would rather marry a frog than the fake, manipulative, entitled, rude, homophobic, racist, bitchy, but most importantly rich girl his parents had chosen for him to marry. As if he’d spend more than a minute within a five-mile radius of the piece of shit who wanted his money and his name, nothing else. When the call from his mother (Brian had stopped calling Carol Thomas his mom years ago, when she first started denying his issues and instead punished him for things he couldn’t control) came, he escaped to the bathroom since it was closer than his room, even though it was a lot less private. He didn’t think anything would go wrong, it wasn’t busy at the restaurant and even if someone entered, they would probably leave him alone to suffer in his misery.
Brian hadn’t noticed the tired man who slunk into the bathroom at first, but when he saw the defeated slump of his shoulders and how utterly exhausted his eyes looked, his mother demanded that he come home the next day. He was pretty sure that everyone within the state could hear his sigh, and he thought about how he had gotten so sick of his own family that this was the case with every conversation he had with them. After his final compromise, he hung up without saying goodbye or waiting for Carol to respond. He knew what she would have said anyway, was far too familiar with the same conversation.
Tim hesitated, trying to figure out what to do - he couldn’t just leave and pretend he’d heard nothing, but he didn’t know this man, like, at all, so he also couldn’t try to comfort him or ask him what was wrong, because something clearly was.
“Family problems,” Brian said into the silence, which was probably just a few seconds long but to Tim’s anxiety-ridden mind it was a lifetime of waiting.
Tim smiled slightly. “I’m familiar.”
Brian made an interested noise.  “You tell me about your life, and I tell you ‘bout mine, alright?”
He understood what sort of deal this was, he was used to therapists and doctors and psychiatrists trying to take his brain apart and figure out what was wrong with him, to try to fix him (or that’s what they said, but he wasn’t sure there weren’t any other reasons behind their words). He despised being treated like a wild animal who could lose his mind and attack at any moment, with a single wrong move. They had treated him like he was dangerous and they pitied him for it, but Brian, he hadn’t looked scared of Tim. He hadn’t acted like he was trying to play it safe - rather, he had tried to make Tim feel comfortable by making himself as vulnerable as Tim was. He realized that he didn’t want to strangle Brian. I’ve spent so much time with psychologists that I’ve started acting like one, analyzing everything and everyone’s actions. Tim laughed internally at the thought.
“Sure. I don’t have anything else to do anyway,” He responded, and told Brian about his current predicament with his mother, leaving out the parts in which he was at the hospital - he just said that he had a chronic illness and his mom had left him at 12 when he had been in the hospital for four years.
“Shit, dude, that really sucks. She doesn’t have any right to your life now, you know that right?” Brian said at the end of Tim’s story, after a short pause to take it all in. “I’m going to sound like a whiny white asshole with my story now,” he added. Tim shook his head. “No, I don’t think so. After all, my life doesn’t invalidate yours,” he said, and the corners of Brian’s mouth twitched up. “I guess you’re right,” he said, and started explaining how his parents wanted him to marry a rich woman high up the ladder of status in the elite community he was born into, and Tim could feel himself tensing up and his mind starting to buzz.
Brian noticed that the man in front of him was looking a little off, and stopped midway through describing that he only had the next week or so to find his soulmate, otherwise he’d be stuck with someone he hated for the rest of his life. “Hey, are you okay?” He asked softly, and the other man (Brian only just realized that he knew this man’s life story but not his name, and mentally reprimanded himself for not introducing himself and asking his name) took a shuddering breath.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said, and Brian didn’t call him out on his bullshit. “Please continue, I’m way too invested in your life now.” He smiled, and Brian laughed.
“Alright, but first, you have to tell me your name because I’ve realized we haven’t introduced ourselves and it’s killing me,” Brian said.
“My name’s Tim Wright.”
“Brian Thomas. Nice to meet you, I guess,” Tim rolled his eyes at Brian’s antics, but Brian knew he was amused, as evidenced by Tim’s light snort. Tim told him to get on with the story, (a bit like a whining child, but in a good way, Brian thought) and he responded with, “Okay, okay, I’ll get to it then.”
“There isn’t much left,” Brian warned. When Tim nodded his understanding, he continued from where he had stopped, and when he had finished talking about his current fucked-up situation, the other man had been shocked into silence.
“You have to be kidding me,” he finally said. “There’s no way that that shit’s real and actually happening to you.”
Brian shook his head and sighed. “I wish I was, but nope! My parents are just assholes who are outta their minds.”
Tim thought for a second - he had to do something, but he didn’t know what he could to be able to help. He chewed on his lip, and after a minute or so, had an idea that he thought could possibly work.
“How about we pretend that we’re soulmates?” he asked Brian, who looked taken aback but also as if he was considering Tim’s proposition. Tim was about to backtrack and apologize, maybe say something along the lines of or we can just not do that if you don’t want to I’m sorry for bringing it up you must think I’m so creepy and weird and can we just ignore this ever happened?
But then Brian nodded thoughtfully, and said, “Actually, I can imagine how that would work. I’d call my parents and tell them that I’ve already found my soulmate and that I want to spend more time with you, and you’d talk to them in order to convince them further if they don’t believe me. I already know I’m gay, so my soulmate is definitely a man, so your voice being a guy’s wouldn’t be a problem and when I find my actual soulmate, if they sound different to you, we could just blame it on the phone being weird through the call. We could say that we wanna spend a few weeks getting to know each other before I leave, and during that time I could find my real soulmate. If I can’t, then we can come up with scenarios in which I’d need to stay longer until I do. Yeah, actually, this is a really good idea, Tim.”
“Uh, really? I mean, thanks,” Tim said, still reeling from Brian’s rambling. “How are we going to do this? Do you like, I don’t know, wanna call your parents and I can talk to them?”
“Yeah, sure, give me a sec,” Brian fished in his pocket for his phone and Tim internally panicked while Brian called his mother. He would have had a panic attack, but before he could truly get worked up, Brian was already talking.
“Hey mother, guess what happened - no, you’ll never guess - I found my soulmate! And he’s a guy like I said he would be! Oh, you don’t want my soulmate to be a man? Well, unfortunately, apparently the universe doesn’t share your homophobic views - oh come on, would I lie about this? You don’t believe me? Fine, I guess I’ll have to prove it. Mother, meet Tim.”
“Hello Mrs. Thomas, it’s nice to meet you,” Tim said, and Brian couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen, and he didn’t want Tim to be there for it. He hated his parents, and the thought of them hurting Tim in any way was unbearable. Wait, what? I met him like 15 minutes ago, why do I care so much about him? He was going to figure out his feelings regarding Tim, but then he saw how he was getting anxious, so he decided to intervene now and unpack his shit later.
Grabbing the phone from Tim, he told his parents that he and Tim wanted to get to know each other by staying at the hotel for longer, and when they objected, he simply reminded them that he was his own person and as an adult, he could do whatever the fuck he wanted to do, slowly getting more pissed off with every word that his parents said. Knowing that he would snap if he listened to more of their bullshit, he hung up after letting them know he would stay for a few more weeks in Ohio, though probably in a motel (he wasn’t rich enough to spend weeks at a five-star hotel). He looked at Tim. “Are you okay? You looked pretty freaked out there, and I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have put that much pressure on-”
“No, no, you’re fine. I guess I just felt overwhelmed, sort of? I don’t really know why I felt so anxious, but I’ve been dealing with anxiety for, like, 16 years. I should be used to it by now,“ Tim assured Brian. "Plus, it worked, didn’t it? they weren’t happy, but they seem to have believed us, so you can stay for a few more weeks and try to find your soulmate. Actually, why are you searching in Ohio and not Alabama anyway? Aside from the obvious reason, of course.” he added.
Brian frowned. “I don’t really know, I guess this just felt closer to my soulmate. You know how your mark is supposed to like, tingle and shit?” Tim nodded, and Brian continued. “Yeah, I guess that’s why - Ohio feels like I’m closer to finding them than in Alabama."
"Yeah, I think I get it. It feels the same for me too, if I think about it - my mark feels weird and that’s never happened before, so I must be doing something right,” Tim said after thinking for a while, and Brian laughed.
“Hey, who knows, maybe we’ll find our soulmates in here, and maybe we’ll find them at around the same time - that would be so cool! You know, I think I rather like you, Tim. I’d like to be friends - if you wanna, of course,” Brian said, and Tim answered with an affirmative.
“Well, you’re pretty cool yourself Brian Thomas, and I would indeed like to be friends, but I really gotta go. Emily’s probably going out of her mind, wondering where her son she found after 12 years went to,” Tim joked, and they exchanged numbers.
“ So, I still have a week or so left, which means I’ll probably see you around the hotel and shit. Bye Tim,” Brian called as he left the bathroom, and Tim waved back before following.
  Chapter 2:
Brian walked back to his room, since he had already finished his dinner, and contemplated the last hour. He had gone from having to fight his parents for less than a week to find his soulmate to being given permission (well, sort of. Brian thought it counted if they had always encouraged him to do something until it actually got to the point in which said thing would be applicable - they couldn’t just change their minds because they were homophobic assholes) for almost a month doing whatever he wanted wherever he wanted to.
Of course, there was also Tim. He didn’t quite understand why he liked Tim already, or why Tim had helped him, but he knew that he didn’t regret it at all. Plus, they were friends now, and he felt that they would only get closer with time. He’d arrived at his room by this point, and after entering, he decided that he wouldn’t get anything else done today. Within minutes he was in bed - no point pretending to be functional when there was nobody around to see it, and plus, he was very sleep-deprived and he should probably go to sleep to fix that.
Since he’d been lying still with his eyes closed for over an hour, Brian believed that he was justified in going on his phone. However, once he opened his phone, he realized that he didn’t really have anything to do, and in a moment of boredom and apathy for his future, he decided to text Tim.
  savingprivatebrian [23:42]: Hey tim
  savingprivatebrian [23:42]: it’s me brian
savingprivatebrian [23:42]: if you couldn’t tell
He was surprised to see that Tim was online, and soon enough, he saw Tim’s typing bubble pop up.
  Tim [23:44]: yeah
Tim [23:44]: i saved your number
  Tim [23:44]: anyway whats up
Brian smiled because of course Tim was awake, he totally seemed like the type of person who’s constantly tired and sleep-deprived.
  savingprivatebrian [23:44]: nothing
savingprivatebrian [23:45]: i just couldnt sleep
  Tim [23:45]: i get that
Tim [23:46]: insomnias a bitch
  savingprivatebrian [23:46]: yep
savingprivatebrian [23:47]: so do you wanna just talk until we can sleep
  Tim [23:47]: please
He laughed at Tim’s response, and settled comfortably into his nest of pillows (perks of five-star hotels) to talk to Tim.
In the end, they both agreed to go to sleep at around 3:30 in the morning, after having texted for almost four hours. If he wasn’t so sleepy, he might’ve wondered why conversation was so easy when he was talking to Tim when he normally wouldn’t be able to even form sentences with people he knew as little as he knew Tim. Instead, though, he placed his phone on the bedside drawer, rolled over, and fell asleep within minutes, still with a little smile playing on his lips.
  Chapter 3:
A week later, Tim’s mother left to go back to work, and Tim promised her that he’d come to visit every now and then. He was surprised to find that he was planning to keep that promise - after his mom explained her reasons, he learned that she hadn’t left because she wanted to, only because she had to. Her life had been easier without him, and that realization hurt. He had held her back her entire life, and he really couldn’t blame her for having done whatever she could to get rid of the reason she couldn’t be happy. He was over it, though. He had had more than a decade to come to terms with the fact that everyone he cared about would leave him eventually, when they realized that he would always be problematic, that he would never get better, and that he would always drag them down. Why would anyone stay with that?
Then came was Brian. Tim knew that he was falling, falling hard, but he also knew that Brian didn’t feel the same - they both wanted to find their soulmates, and even if Brian did like someone as fucked up as Tim, when he found his soulmate, he’d just leave.
He had told Brian about his mom and how he felt, as well as why he was in a hospital for 10 years, and Brian’s only reaction was to hug him (they didn’t notice that no parts of their skin had made contact, Tim would later realize) and telling him that he’d never leave. That was a bigger deal than Brian realized, and he had broken down crying, which caused Brian to start crying too. They had spent about 2 hours talking about their problems, and Tim left Brian’s room feeling better than he had for over a month. They had only been friends for a few days at that point, but there was no denying that they had a connection - they were already so, so close (and if Tim wanted them to be even closer, well, no-one had to know).
Jay had called, on the second day. He had asked what was going on and why the hell Tim hadn’t texted or called him - rightfully so, since they usually talked daily and it had been more than 2 days with nothing. Tim had ranted about Brian and his mom, but it had taken Jay about ten minutes into Tim’s monologue to point out that he was totally crushing on Brian, and Tim had found himself unable to argue. After talking for over an hour, Jay had hung up with a threat to Tim if he didn’t text him everything that happened.
Tim thought back to that conversation many times over the following days - he could trust Jay to call him out on his bullshit and help him work through it, and he knew Jay could do the same. Whenever his anxiety convinced him that they simply tolerated his presence and actually hated him, Tim would text Jay (and now Brian) and Jay would not stop texting him until Tim had no doubt left about their friendship.
On his last day in the hotel, a week after he arrived and met Brian, he had breakfast with Brian to talk about what they were going to do, since this was Brian’s last day too.
“Over here,” Brian called out as Tim walked into the restaurant in the hotel, from which they got free breakfast.
“Hey,” Tim said when he sat down. “You wanna go get some food? I’m starving.”
“Yeah, sure. Just a second,” Brian put his stuff on the extra chair, and connected his phone to a charger. “My battery’s at 12 percent,” he explained at Tim’s questioning look.
“Alright, let’s go. What do you wanna get?” Brian asked when they entered the self-service area.
“Eggs and bacon first, so they cook, but I’ll look around anyway to see what’s there,” Tim answered while grabbing a plate.
“Why didn’t you get a fork and knife too?”
“Because I’ll drop them, Brian.”
“Ha, weak.”
“Do you really want to try me?”
“Geez, you’re just so scary.”
“I know.”
They had reached the omelette station, and they waited for their orders to be cooked in comfortable silence, which was new to both of them. Shaking his head, Tim decided to ignore his lack of friends while he was so happy and had the chance to spend time with someone who not only could tolerate him, but also wanted to befriend him.
He was brought back to reality by Brian nudging him, and snapped his eyes onto Brian in alarm, quickly realizing there was no threat, there was just his food (paranoia had become a reflex at this point, and he wasn’t sure whether he was supposed to laugh or cry because of it).
Throughout breakfast, Tim found his eyes lingering more and more on Brian’s lips when all social and conversational norms stated that his gaze should be on his eyes or overall figure to watch his body language and hand gestures, so like everyone else who’s ever been in this situation, he decided, okay, we’re going to put these feelings of attraction in a box, now close it, and yep! Push it as far away from coherent thought as you can, right up against the childhood trauma, self-hatred, insecurity, and look! It’s the box of fear of abandonment. Now, we don’t think about these, so surely this’ll be safe here. After cataloging everything into the dark basement of his mind, buried deep under everything else and covered in the mental equivalent of cobwebs and a layer of dust over everything, he simply looked away from Brian’s mouth and focused on literally any other part of his body, like, like- his eyes! That would surely work, wouldn’t it? You can’t possibly mess eye contact up, even though you’re, well, you, Tim. Don’t fuck this up with your social incompetence.
Yeah, no. After only a few minutes of trying to draw his attention away from what Brian would taste like, he found out that eyes are just as dangerous as lips, since he found that it was easier than it should be to get lost in Brian’s warm hazel eyes. He never realized that there were rings of different colours, and with the light framing his face, he looked otherworldly, like he didn’t belong to planet Earth or at least had some kind of magic coursing through his veins, just like warmth was coursing through Tim’s as he drowned in the ocean of brown and green filling Brian’s eye sockets. Because he was drowning, drowning, drowning as he forgot to breathe, move, do anything at all in the haze that came over him.
