if mcyt isn’t fiction then
people who create dnd characters that are similar to them in personality are just playing themselves and should not be treated as having made a character
people who make any other dnd character should also be treated as just playing themselves since people refuse to even consider roleplay smps as fiction
any ocs someone puts a bit of themselves into? nope not fiction!
actors who play a character with the same first name as them aren’t really acting
and so on
maybe YOU can’t separate characters and real people and think that everything you see from a youtuber even when they’re explicitly acting is how they are in real life but we as a fandom just don’t have that issue lol. we’ve had disclaimers and indicators for when we’re talking about characters and not content creators for years because a certain smp contained a character having suicidal thoughts as a result of abuse at the hands of another character and we needed to make it absolutely crystal clear that we were referring to a fictional storyline and not real guy #1 being an abuser and real guy #2 being suicidal. these customs have either extended into other corners of mcyt fandom, or some developed their own independently like hispanic mcyt fans have used the word cubito to distinguish mc guy from real life guy from years, a term that other language speakers liked so much we’ve also started picking it up lol
we know exactly what we’re doing. i get that the line maybe does seem more blurred to an outsider looking in (i wouldn’t know given that both my first fandom at age 12 and current fandom at age 20 were mcrp lol) but it’s universally understood amongst us. i don’t have a problem separating hermitcraft!gem and empires s1!gem the wizard with a twin brother and empires s2!gem the princess and cc!gem the real life canadian woman.
idk it rubs me the wrong way that after years of trying to explain this we’re either met with people calling us racists because of three guys that the rest of us (all of us, really, because dream team fans do not claim to be minecraft fans. those are the type to actually write rpf and ship the real life racist guys) hate probably a lot more than any of you do, or they watch a few minutes of a less roleplay-heavy series/part and decide that the entire medium is invalid as a form of storytelling
it’s so annoying. i don’t think we need to be understood to have validity as a fandom we’ve been doing this for years already without that but it is so infuriating and sad how whenever there’s some kind of fandom poll thing one of three things happens
mcyt fans are banned outright and placed on the same level as something like hp
an mcyt fan runs their own and gets harassed for it
a non-mcyt fan allows us in until they get harassed so badly by whatever fandoms we go up against that they end up deleting our bracket
in what world is that normal behaviour. and that harassment always involves calling them all racist cishet white men such as misgendering both eret (real life bisexual genderqueer person) and their character (also queer), attempting to harass jimmy solidarity fans because jimmy makes mc videos so he must be a dream associate (the only time they interacted was in a tournament during which dream and georgenotfound shittalked jimmy’s best friends to his face), all the shit quackity has gotten for being a former friend of the dream team as if he wasn’t the #1 victim of their racism and xenophobia, the fact that any time c!technoblade is involved in a poll we have to beg other fandoms not to talk shit about him because the real life man died of cancer before dream’s grooming allegations came out, similarly when tfc was in one. and so on and so forth. all because people can’t separate roleplay and real life and think that the entire minecraft sphere revolves around dream just because their idea of mcyt does (not even his own smp named after him did that).

Hey, just wanted to check in on you. I know a lot of your fics center around cwilbur/ctommy. I hope you’re doing ok with the news. I’m so proud of the community not tolerating this.
I feel kind of guilty though. I listened heavily to love joy as I related to it and it’s been helping me get through rough times. But now I’m sitting here wondering “does that make me a bad person?”. I stopped listening to Lovejoy YCMGA and MSR but am I a bad person for relating to those songs?
I can’t listen to them anymore without feeling sick, knowing something that once brought me so much comfort was created by a man doing the same thing I’m trying to escape from.
I still want to listen to them sometimes though, but I refuse to support a man like that. I’m also a little nervous about fics. Me and my brother would read your fics together as a way to bond even through long distance living. cwilbur was one of my brother’s favorite characters and he loves your fics.
I haven’t talked with him about it yet, though I probably should. I feel like all in all I just need time to plant my feet and get it back together.
But in the meantime I am so endlessly proud for seeing how everyone has been encouraging and supporting Shelby. I know how scary it is to speak up about what has been done to you and I’m so proud of her. I’m also proud of how the community has refused to support him at all.
Shutting down accounts, turning the Wilbur subreddit into a Wilbur Wright subreddit, I’m proud that so many people have taken action while the rest of us are still reeling
Thank you for letting me vent, I hope you are taking time and space to care for yourself during this as well
thank you anon, I spent the last week talking extensively with people in my inbox about the whole wilbur situation and it really helped me process a lot of my emotions at the time so I'm doing alright now. while I'm not taking any of my old fics down, I'm still figuring out what I'm going to do with my ongoing fics that center around c!wilbur, so we'll see where I end up landing with that
I'm also so incredibly proud of the community for not tolerating this. like, you gotta admit, this was one of the most cohesive ways I've ever seen a fanbase dissolve. sure there are still some freaks sticking around, but the vast majority of us got up and left.
now, don't ever feel like you're a bad person for relating to the lyrics wilbur wrote. although many of the songs feel different now with this new information about him as a person, he wrote about mental struggles in a way that MANY people connected with. there's nothing wrong with having those kinds of struggles. what's wrong is when someone dealing with those kinds of things is hurting other people, is made aware they're hurting other people, and then refuses to do anything to try and change for the better. wilbur refused to try and be a better person. he chose to keep abusing his partner and hurting the people around him. that's what makes a bad person.
I do think separation of art vs artist is possible, but it gets trickier when financial support comes in. that's why I suggest if you want to keep listening to lovejoy, piracy is always an option. the mp3 youtube downloader is your best friend there. MSR is a bit trickier though given that we know MSR was entirely written about wilbur's perspective of his and shelby's relationship, and now we know the truth of what that relationship was actually like. his own narrative that disregards the abuse is what makes up the album itself. personally, I don't think I could ever listen to MSR again without feeling gross.
that makes me really happy to hear you and your brother bonded while reading my fics. like man that's so sweet, I really hope you two will be able to keep enjoying the same things. whether you're both able to separate character from cc and continue reading c!wilbur content, or finding another interest to share in the future. take your time though. there's no rush to talk to him. let your feelings settle.
and yes I'm also incredibly proud of shubble as I'm sure we all are. coming forward like this is a terrifying thing to do but I'm so grateful she did, because now we all are aware and aren't unintentionally platforming a dangerous person like that. I'm so proud of this community. we really all came together in the end.
take care of yourself <3

Hello everyone!
Coffe here reporting to you for the first time in a while.
First of all how are you? I hope you are well and that you are taking care of yourselves and drinking water. Hydration is important! I know it's been a while since I've talked to you guys so I just want to know how you're doing before I get to the important part of the post^^
Once that's done let's get to the matter at hand.
I'm sure more than one of you will know about the Shelby situation, and the first thing I want to say is that I fully support her. She is a strong and brave woman who decided to speak out and reveal an abuser, she deserves all our love and affection right now, I know it's scary to talk about your abusers and how much they hurt you that's why I'm with her and this situation I always will be.
Although it should be noted that I had never liked Shelby before and this situation made me know her content and I recommend her to you, she is very sweet and watching her streams makes you have a good and relaxed time. So you can also support her and send her lots of love.
Now let's talk about CC!Wilbur...he is an asshole who should pay for what he did and let's pray to whatever deity that there are no more victims in this situation.
If there are I hope they are safe and well and that they are now with a partner who respects and loves them how they deserve.
But let's talk about C!Wilbur in my stories, I personally will continue to use him. I can separate the character from the CC pretty well and Ao3 doesn't give W money or support so I personally don't mind writing about him. I may not write fics centered around him but he will still be a part of my writing and art.
He will have some changes though, so this character will be more mine, more ours than CC!W's.
This guy, the C!Wilbur I will write from now on will be mine. Not CC!W's, I will add and subtract things to his character that you may or may not think fit him. What I can tell you he will keep is his taste in music and his sweater, because I love music and I love sweaters.
C!Wilbur will obviously have his Lore base or part of the Dsmp Lore but other than that he will be mine or ours. Actually if someone decides to use this version of C!Wilbur once he have his design and character ready I wouldn't mind.
In fact you have my permission to use him, since C!Wilbur doesn't belong to CC!W he belongs to us and we need to give a little life to the character and a little more shine.
So even though I will still call my C!Wilbur, well, Wilbur... his name will be Wilder which means hunter and Wilbur will be his nickname, because I like the name actually.
So with that I bid you farewell and wish you a good day/night! I hope you are all well and are handling this situation as calmly and peacefully as possible.

honestly its complicated. because on one hand its true that, given the nature of minecraft roleplay, the dsmp fandom has had a larger hand in shaping the characters (especially designs, headcanons becoming canon, etc) than in most other media. it HAS always been an extremely collaborative fandom between fans and ccs, and so a lot of characters have been fleshed out by the fans.
so i do genuinely understand the sentiment of like. they're ours no one can take them away from us. and like i agree! especially with people making really detailed AUs and intricate designs or straight up changing their names etc. i fully support people reclaiming them and putting their own spin on these characters.
but also it feels like recently people have been giving out this idea that you can only talk about dsmp if you like- put some sort of disclaimer that theyre 'yours'. like 'theyre your ocs now'.
and its fine if they are!!! its fine if cwil etc are your ocs! but it's not how everyone's gonna feel. when i post about c!wilbur im posting about that guy. the dsmp guy.
and i understand why people are in that position, given how much discomfort and pain is associated with a lot of the creators nowadays, but it feels like theres this idea of like. the separation between character and cc! disappearing after a certain threshold of bad things done by the cc. c!wilbur was a fictional character when we shipped him with c!quackity or when he headcanonned him as transfem, and he still is a fictional character now that we know what his creator was truly like. that hasn't changed!
this is very rambley and genuinely not meant to be like a negative post im honestly just interested in the way fans have shaped characters in dsmp vs other fandoms

listen i'm not gonna drop the entire essay but i think the fervor around ghostbur is a bit. well. i get why wilbur says he hates the fucker. i know this is kind of irrelevant after the finale already happened but i want to talk about it a bit.
like it feels (to ME. and i think to wilbur as well, both c and cc) like people latched onto this soft, unangry version of wilbur. like his trauma was only valid when he offered other people comfort and spoke gently.
and when the angry, hurt, not-so-nice wilbur came back, people's reactions can't have felt good. to watch people mourn the dead, soft version of you more than the alive one. wilbur never had a funeral. when tommy saw him in limbo he decided he should never come back-- despite that dead, soft version of wilbur saying he wanted that. wilbur came back and everyone was angry with him, and not just because of his actions before his death but because he was replacing a more palatable version of himself.
having poured a lot of himself into his character, watching people mourn the silly little ghost of that character rather than the raw, angry, spiteful one can't have felt good. watching people, for over a year, talk about wanting that version back in a story context that implies that cwilbur would have to die again for that to happen, and implying they want that death to be a repeat of the first (suicide) cannot have felt good.
trying to build out this character who's in desperate need of healing and reparations and having people ask endlessly about that stupid ghost and his cute little sheep cannot have felt good, from a writer's perspective. if i had a whole arc planned out with a character who had that much going on and people asked about his dead version's pet i wouldn't be pleased, particularly when that's all i see all the time.
we poke fun at wilbur for posting his little angst rants on reddit (which are admittedly very funny and im sure in large part that's why he writes them) but i would be posting angsty rants about that damn ghost too if i were him. imagine being so constantly misinterpreted. imagine writing a character meant to show the phantoms people leave behind when they die, and people overtake your entire character with it.
sometimes trauma doesn't make you soft and forgetful. it makes you angry, it makes you worse, it makes you lash out, it makes you ugly-- wilbur was trying to convey that with cwilbur in pogtopia and cwilbur post-revival. i'm not saying ghostbur's way of processing and expressing trauma is wrong; i'm saying people prioritizing it must've been endlessly frustrating.
anyway i don't like ghostbur very much for all the above reasons and because for me i always viewed him as a part of wilbur and not a separate entity. go read my fic if you want to hear about that.

see my view on the whole like real life shipping thing is that while I think platonic or soft romantic content is for the most part fine I think people need to consider the implications of sexual content more seriously
like me and my best friend flirt with eachother all the time, we call each other things like ‘babe’, ‘gorgeous’ or ‘honey’, she has sat in my lap before, we have kissed others cheeks and hands before
people flirt and joke around with their friends all the time, especially if they are close with each other, we have both consented to the joke y’know?
that being said, that doesn’t mean I would like to see people (especially ones I don’t know) drawing or writing sexual material of us together
not only would it be very uncomfortable for the both of us, it could even potentially put a strain on our relationship and how we interact with each other in the future
it’s also incredibly invasive and parasocial and there is also a lack of consent from the people you are creating the sexual content of for the material you are creating
not only that but again these are real people, like yes they are putting on a character at times but the lines are very unclear with streaming between the character and actual cc and I think people need to actually realize the implications of that
like please just imagine for a second that ur minding ur own damn business and just find countless pieces of sexual content that complete strangers have made between you and a friend of yours, again I’d personally find that a bit distressing
not only that but by creating this material you are technically involving yourself with them in that matter, this is especially bad if the creator is a minor- from an outsiders perspective who may not be as clued up about the internet this could be misinterpreted in … concerning ways
I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m not expecting people to stop producing this material even if I personally find some of it a bit yikes, a lot of people do just be horny on main after all
however i do think people should be more mindful of where they post this type of content, it should at least be tagged appropriately so people can block it if they would like, or it should be posted on a separate account with the cc’s themselves blocked from the account (unless for some reason they have given the ok for fans to draw that if they want) so that they don’t have to see or interact with the content or even just keep the sexual content to a private server etc
I mean perhaps in just being over dramatic as I’m very much from the internet age of not posting ur real personal info or that anyone you talk to could be a bad person etc so I think I do just have a lot of internet related concerned anyway but Imao
anyway ur probs just gonna reply to this with a tldr but ur entitled to ur own interests and I hope u have a nice day either way :)
are you like. from 2020?? do we need to have this talk again? do we need to establish once again that they're playing characters? do we need to dig up why these c! q! o! cc! things before names were integrated in our fandom lingo? REAL LIFE slimecicle and mariana did not have an egg daughter that died twice. real life slimecicle and mariana did not have sex to fucking clocks by coldplay lmao. it's not personas 😭
also yeah about minding my own business and then encountering sexual content – people started to hide their art under diff terms and emojis I hear?? like I don't use twitter so I'm not the source for that. if you find it uncomfortable - block the shipping tags. done ^^
have a nice day as well :зз

My Mike Afton Headcanons :)
Aromantic asexual, interested in a qpr
Autistic (I’m probably going to make a separate post just for this)
Genderfluid, he/they/she/xe
Deaf or close to it. I’ve yet to figure out if it should be just the natural progression of his hearing or something that happened
His mom was Mexican
Warm brown skin tone (yknow, like how colors can warm or cool)
They have their mom’s wild dark brown hair, and it shows once he takes care of it (and isn’t that a thematic statement and a half)
Curly dark brown hair, grows it to just above shoulder length
Having it pulled back all the time gives them a headache, but they won’t leave it loose if they feel they’re in danger
Complete heterochromia, their right eye is blue and their left is brown
(This was mostly because I couldn’t decide between giving them brown eyes or blue, and now I’m attached)
5′5″ (let Mike be short, it’s what they deserve)
Other Headcanons
Since they have trouble hearing and work in a place where they have to rely on hearing to warn them of danger, they have issues going without aids
Gruffly gentle with people younger than them, but prone to hostility with people older
Will fight as soon as he thinks he’s being threatened
On bad days he panics at everything he thinks could be perceived as a mistake
Loves to people watch (unless they’re having a bad day where they compare themself to their dad) enjoys watching life just bustling around them, it makes them feel more human
Hates being treated like she’s stupid or worthless
AUTHORITY ISSUES BABY
In an ideal world, xe would be a paramedic or artist :)
Touch starved and touch repulsed
Loves rain, it’s xeir favorite smell too
The ocean is also something she loves
Sunset colors are her favorite
Loves painting especially mural-like pieces
Has trouble making friends and connecting with people, but sometimes finds people that just click
Has been a disappointment all his life, and when he grew up he learned to wear it like a badge of pride. There’s still a wound beneath that though, and it likes to show up on bad days and around parental figures.
Chronic pain, body issues
Once he learns to stand up for himself, he also figures out how to stand up for others
Dry sense of humor
Their wrist getting grabbed is a trigger. If it happens unexpectedly they will fight them off, or panic if that doesn’t work.
Introverted
Gardening is something they enjoy a lot. They have a lot of plants (some of which are wild/weeds) knows a lot about their properties
Self-esteem issues (but we knew that)
Spoke Spanish with their mom until (something happened, I’m still figuring out what)
Later picked it up again, or spoke and learned it all through childhood to stay connected to her (dad told him he couldn’t take Spanish because he would ‘cheat’)
His mom used to make heated milk with brown sugar and nutmeg for him. He makes it for his siblings on bad nights, and later for himself when he needs comfort
C-ptsd in general but also about ennard specifically (which makes eating even more of a challenge, and gives him autonomy issues)
They were conscious while Ennard was in them (I’m so sorry)
She’s got her mom’s eyes and smile. She nearly cries the first time someone points out the resemblance because she’s been compared to her father her whole life
Has xeir mom’s freckles and temperament, but xeir dad’s face and mannerisms (unfortunately)
TOUCH STARVED AS HELL
Fuck William’s accent, Michael has his mom’s accent
Nearly debilitating fear of losing autonomy
Can face the worst life has to offer without batting an eye, but crumbles like a wet paper bag in the face of any positive interaction
Loves space and thinking about it and talking about it
Was an annoying and kind of rough older sibling, but also took on the responsibility of his siblings. William was especially bad the week of cc’s birthday, and that translated into being rougher and more calloused with his siblings. If the joke had gone as intended, he probably would have made it up to him in his own rough way once he realized how much it affected cc.
Don’t tell me you haven’t done something in the heat of the moment that you regret later. I know I have
Being gentle comes easily to him after he gets away from his father and learns to leave the ‘be tough or get hurt’ mindset
This makes him even more like his mother, with his temper turning into spitfire protectiveness combined with a gentle empathy, especially for kids
His mother begins to shine through more and more. Where he once had his father’s expressions and habits, he now exhibits his mom’s
Sorting through my Mike refs, I’m realizing how many of my headcanons were just putting a neon sign above his head blaring ‘AUTISTIC. THIS PERSON IS AUTISTIC’

hi you do t gotta answer this btw but I was just wanna what’s gonna happen to your books? like if you’ll delete them or you’ll stop updating? bc you’re one of the best and funniest writers in the fandom and id be devastated if you were gonna stop writing. you don’t have to if you don’t want to , don’t take this as me pressuring you sorry, I just wanted to know.
Here’s what I’m planning as of today, the 18th of October:
I really don’t think I’ll finish any of my wips that include c!Dream. That’s gross. CC!Dream is a piece of shit human being and that’s what I’ll say on that, I’m not even remotely caught up on any of the controversy and, frankly, I don’t need to be.
This is a goodbye to You’re Dead, most likely, among… pretty much every other dsmp fic I’ve ever written. Is it perhaps performative to stop writing dsmp fics because of something horrible the creator did? No, because fuck that guy. I’m extremely attached to my stories and my worlds, but not only do I want to stop supporting him even tangentially, but it would just make me feel gross to even look at his name.
This sucks! But I’ve been thinking about this really hard for the past weekend plus some days, and I’ve decided that, while there is a vast disconnect between character and content creator, it’s truly impossible to separate the two entirely.
Do I still love the characters? Yes! Not even gonna lie, talking about c!karlnapity and the Las Nevadas and Kinoko gangs helped me get through a lot this past year. So as of right now, as you may have noticed, I’m still talking about those characters. I just can’t morally allow myself to write about anything involving that universe at the moment. Until we hear from other content creators if they’re ditching that shitbag or not, I can’t bring myself to write about their characters, as much as that sucks. Plus it is the Dream SMP. Can’t exactly avoid the connotations there, can I?
Not to detract from the victim(s?), but this whole situation sucks for a lot of people. This is a huge community that has been impacted. A lot of talented artists and writers are gonna be gone.
The way I’m seeing it as of right now as I answer this ask in a Starbucks five teas into a book on late-stage Populism is that I’ll finish the two dsmp projects I am obligated to finish. You’ll see my work in those, but from there? I don’t know. We’ll just have to see how it shakes out, I guess.
I am keeping everything up, though! And I’m always willing to talk about my works (Soap has been hearing a Lot about you’re dead recently)! I just don’t think I’ll ever update them again.
That being said, this gives me a chance to work on writing for other fandoms I’ve been avoiding. I wanna write for Empires! I wanna write for Hermitcraft! I’m not done writing, I just can’t work on what… most of my followers know me for. Which sucks. But everything about this situation sucks.
Also I’m working on two original novel concepts I’ve been toying with since 2018 AND I’m actually gonna turn I thiiiiink You’re Dead or my unnamed vigilante au (the one I was gonna post on Friday and never did) into an original piece of fiction, so! That’s cool!
Sorry if this isn’t the answer you wanted, and this is all I’m gonna say on the whole situation. It’s a tough time for a lot of people, and I’m staying well out of the whole situation for personal reasons.
Signed, A.D.

Any thoughts related to tommy's role-playing on the dsmp?
Nowhere near as sensational as Wilbur but there's interesting little nuggets lying around.
C!Tommy might not have started out as a character on purpose but I’ve talked before about how he had an era (that may now be coming to a close) of extending his Three Disintegration habits into a stream persona. It’s muddy because it’s a facet of him but it’s also just a bit he does really well, and the difference between Tommy and c!Tommy originated from the fact that flesh and blood Tommy isn’t actually living in Minecraft.
I would say that what you see is what you get with c!Tommy compared to c!Wilbur because c!Tommy is a lot less internal, but then the issue becomes interpreting his actions. I think most people come to the same conclusions, he was a rambunctious dude who wanted to make his mark and was willing to play dirty to achieve that. He was in his overcompensation arc, which wouldn't be out of place for an insecure teen on the internet, and then… I can’t say he mellowed out but he got very sad in character, which did map onto what was going on in his life at the time. He’s going through a lot of changes as we speak and I’m curious how they’re going to show up in the “volume 1” finale of his character.
For lack of a better word c!Tommy gets woobified a lot and I do understand why, but it seems like a shame to not like someone for the entirety of who they really are. He was very ends-above-means and pretty brutal sometimes, more than he's given credit for depending on what corner of the fandom you're in. He wasn’t often my cup of tea but I could tell what he was going for in the early days.
I haven’t seen a ton of Tommy pov lore, so a lot of my lore exposure is clips and cultural osmosis which I know is dangerous when it comes to inheriting bias. I personally haven’t made many observations about how he thinks / functions from lore but I would say the odds are good that you would be able to. I know that in-character he’s talked about needing a leader so that he wouldn’t have to bear the weight of making his own decisions and directing himself when talking about Wilbur. He’s also talked about holding onto relationships and how he prioritises not being alone. Basically I feel very validated when he deep-talks but I also haven’t seen all of those moments by a longshot.
I will say that c!Tommy is a lot more mentally closed off than cc!Tommy, he takes whatever perspective-taking issues that Tommy might have (or had) and cranks them up to 10. C!Tommy highlights the part of him that gets defensive and self-righteous and goes to black and white thinking under stress, which became increasingly hard to critique as his legitimate trauma piled on.
I did personally check in on exile because I kept hearing how intense it seemed to people, and it was very interesting as the brain child of a pair of Sixes. It felt like the first drops of Tommy steering the ship in a writer way separately from Wilbur, and he was immediately like "Just fuck me up” and Dream said "say no more I got you." They both went to playing with the fear of abandonment and isolation knowing exactly how potent it was. People have talked about how Tommy and Dream ‘yes, and’ each other to new heights (and lows) as a duo when they’ve both got their filters off, but this seems to be the case when they’re playing serious as well; they both want to lean into the dangerous and the extreme.
The behind the scenes dynamic of Tommy and Dream always fascinated me because there’s this civil agreement to be mutually antagonistic. If I’ve got my facts straight Dream asked for permission to start the disc war as something to do in the beginning, and it all kicked off from there. I know it’s not much deeper than the fact that actors aren’t their characters and chat over lunch about their roles, but it must take quite a bit of trust to collaborate on such an intense onscreen dynamic.
I'm genuinely very curious what kind of writer Tommy is going to be in the future. (Shoutout to zombie Tommy, love to see an empowered young villain.) It’s too early to tell what his patterns are but he’s got a lot of intensity and tragedy-loving influences so I’m waiting to see what reflects in his future work.

c! and cc! distinctions for hermitcraft and its lore, somewhat compared to the dsmp
Okay so to preface this, a lot of people are familiar with the distinctions between the characters and the content creators on the Dream SMP. Character Ranboo is an amnesiac half-enderman creature with a terrible sense of self worth and backbone. Content creator Ranboo is a 18-year old streamer and youtuber who makes the videos and provides the commentary on character Ranboo. It can be argued there’s an additional layer of acting between them, as there is the “streamer” personality we see when we refer to cc!Ranboo and it’s separate from their actual personality (this is easier to understand with Tommy as an example. We know he doesn’t actually talk in private like he does on vlogs or in non-character moments. Whether that excuses some of the stuff he’s said in his “not in dsmp character but still in a character” moments is a can of worms I’m not opening today).
But anyway, the point is that for the dsmp streamers this distinction is obvious, and there’s a fandom-wide understanding of it. cc!Dream is a young Floridaman. c!Dream is a megalomaniac child murderer being locked and tortured in solitary confinement (unless that’s changed as well. tbh I haven’t really kept up with recent dsmp lore). Same for the other characters.
With Hermitcraft, it’s not that there’s... less of an understanding of it in the fandom? Like, obviously it’s also fandom-wide protocol to acknowledge stuff like “oooh the civil war was rp and the ccs are all friends who don’t actually want to kill each other” or “no, Grian and Scar don’t actually condone human organ trafficking like they did in the head hunt, that was just an acting bit”, but there’s less of a concrete line between the characters the Hermits play and the Hermits themselves.
And that’s perfectly understandable. Hermitcraft has lore - tons and tons of lore, some vaguely connected over several seasons (Convex, Evil Ex, diamonds as currency), some confined to one season (most of the alliances and rivalries, IOUs, lore about builds), and some in timeline specific story arcs within a season (Area 77 Arc, Mycelium War arc, ect, though I notice S6 was the “height” of arcs and since then things have blended together more). But much of it blends genuine reactions, gameplay mechanics, and very subtly worded and acted parts together to create a character that feels like they could be plausibly be the actual cc, even if the suspension is gone once you take a moment to think about the meta details. The other rp moments, which (to my personal delight, are getting rarer) are very, very obvious roleplay not meant to be taken seriously (ie the mayoral race, civil war, turf war). Even those incorporate far more game mechanics and are more “immersed” in the minecraft world than the storylines of the dsmp.
Throughout it all most of what makes specific moments “in-character” and what makes specific moments the reactions and actions of the actual cc are often... not necessarily misunderstood, but not thought about or considered by a lot of people, especially considering how important it is in the dsmp fandom.
This is a bit hard to wrap even my own head around, so take for example, one of my favorite lines in the series - “Is the moon big?”
I don’t remember if it was Grian who asked this question to Mumbo, or the other way around, it doesn’t really matter for the purposes of this example. The important thing is that if we take a moment to think about it logically, Grian and Mumbo the content creators/youtubers absolutely either know why the moon is big (most likely a server texture pack), or know that certain hermits with the help of Xisuma are planning a storyline with the moon being big and are clued in on some details about what’s going to happen. Given the very “absolute democracy, everyone must agree to big server decisions” nature of how they’ve stated HC behind the scenes is run, I’m leaning towards the former.
The point is that the question being asked is part of roleplay. The ccs know the moon is big and they know why the moon is big (probably). I mean, even in the off chance that they genuinely didn’t have any idea, there’s still many examples to be found around the server (Doc’s cursed chunk story, though that is a bit of a stretch, and stuff like Grian boat rocketing up to Season 7). The Hermits themselves seem to have been made more aware of the c and cc distinction following 3rd life/last life. It might account for some of the stylistic lore changes in S8 compared to S7 or S6, a change which I adore. Many of the Hermits are aware that at any given time they’re on a sliding scale from “fully cc” to “fully in character” and make decisions about when to be what.
The most obvious and yet hidden-in-plain-sight example of “stealth lore” I can find is the use of diamonds as currency. Logically, in a survival server just makes way more sense for them all to build farms and let each other free reign of them to share resources like a communist utopia. It would be the most efficient and logical way of building things, like how SciCraft does it - the problem is that a communist utopia free-sharing system is too peaceful, and thus not interesting. Every little shopping conflict with prices and IOUs and undercuts are, to put it in survival terms utterly unnecessary - we all know diamonds don’t have actual in-game value past the first 2 weeks of any season just like we know a 100$ bill is a thin piece of fabric that will do you no good on a stranded island. And yet the hermits have this system because it’s interesting - it makes for a good story. It makes for good, subtle roleplay. The most genius part of the “diamonds as currency” roleplay mechanic on Hermitcraft is that most of the audience and even some of the Hermits at times (especially in earlier seasons) probably don’t even consciously register it as roleplay. When Sam wanted to start a business on the dsmp everyone made hc jokes about his character, but we all acknowledged it as c!Sam, because dsmp is so steeped in this distinction. Hermitcraft isn’t, both in the community and on the server itself.
What I guess I’m saying here is that the line between c! and cc! is blurred to most people way more on Hermitcraft than it is on the dsmp, but I don’t believe the line itself is actually that fuzzy. Given any moment on the server and I daresay you could describe most of them as “in character”, “cc! commentary”, or even “in character character mega inception of doom” (ie characters like Renbob, Goatfather, Poultry Man”. So basically--the line is more defined than most people realize. Still not as defined as on the DSMP, I acknowledge, but definitely there.
This is notable because a lot of people, especially those in mcyt but outside the hc fandom, sometimes assumes it isn’t? Like, people who says “ooh Hermitcraft’s pretty but I prefer [insert x server that’s almost always dsmp] because there’s history and lore behind that server’s builds”. Like NO. Hermitcraft has fucking history! Its builds have fucking history! And that history is just as intricate and complex and well-developed as any other server’s, and I say even more so! I’ve seen Mianite, Team Crafted, and like a dozen CaptainSparklez series rise and fall, and none of them have had acting and lore that has engaged, interested, and make me think critically like Hermitcraft’s has. The Hermits are playing characters. Sometimes their characters are playing characters. Yes, sometimes all three show up in the span of a 15 minute episode and yes, it’s harder to distinguish between the c and the cc personalities, but that’s because they’re not doing huge, dramatic trauma blending sessions every other week.
I’d like to make it clear that
1) this distinction is surprisingly well established among the HC fanfiction community. Even if a lot of writers aren’t aware of it, they’re pretty good at parsing out what is a “character reaction” and what is a “content creator reaction” in episodes and streams, even when the line would be impossible to tell to 70% of young teenage dsmp fans. We’ve gotten good at this over the years.
2) I’m not advocating for any specific action. I don’t think we should increase any usage of specific tags or vocabulary. This post doesn’t stem from some long-hidden annoyance towards specific traits/trends of the HC fandom (I have those, but this post doesn’t have much to do with them).
3) Hermitcraft has fucking lore and its builds have fucking lore and its characters have fucking lore, ya fools
So why did I write this in the first place?
I don’t really know. To talk about it. To discuss an internet phenomena that interested me. To point out some stuff people might have not noticed. To let certain people know that Hermitcraft has deep fucking lore and if one more TommyInnit crossover treats it like a trauma-free paradiseland where swearing is banned-
Maybe I just saw Grian’s (as of now) recently released episode titled “MOON’S BIG.” and got emotional because I’ve been watching the series for several years, and that title and thumbnail so clearly encapsulates why I love it and its lore and the characters and ccs that make that lore happen so much.
So, as one last distinction-
Content creator Grian: Knows why the moon is big. Probably in on developing the direct of its lore.
Character Grian: “I think the moon is big.”
Content creator Mumbo: Trying to figure out another interesting way to kill things without upping the kill counter.
Character Mumbo: End crystal shop, give me yo diamonds
Content creator Scar: Trying to figure out cool hat designs to create and import into the texture pack
Character Scar: hippity hoppity this attic is my property
Content Creator Tommy: how do I traumatize my character furthur
Character Tommy: owo trauma is a bitch out owo im so sad and traumatized
Content Creator Ranboo: doing schoolwork
Character Ranboo: water kills me also I have silk touch hands and tried to break the big bad villain out of prison????
Content Creator Wilbur: Trying to run an ARG (or as a friend called it, ARRRGH), writing dsmp plot
Character Wilbur: hippity hoppity your nation is now my property
in conclusion
moon’s big.

Why did Dream do all of those things to Tommy in exile, in your opinion? And how does it fit in with his overall goal of uniting the server etc (I'm actually incredibly curious to know why you think this is, and potentially what purpose it serves, as I don't think I've seen anyone talk about it with a purpose in mind, only ever the fact that he did it because he wanted to)
I'm going to preface this by saying that it's been a while since I've seen Exile, so I'm going off of memory and the few clips I got saved and could be missing some stuff.
From the look of things, everything c!Dream does in Season 2 is done to further his plan of getting imprisoned, with no clear indication of how the imprisonment plays into the larger nebulous goal of uniting the server. The only action we can connect directly to his larger motivation of uniting the server is c!Dream destroying L'Manburg because he sees nations as a source of division and conflict.
My interpretation of c!Dream's motivation behind Exile is that its purpose was keeping c!Tubbo and c!Tommy separated while he built trust with c!Tubbo to get the disc from him. All of his actions in Exile are directed at making sure c!Tommy has no contact with c!Tubbo. He needed the disc to lure c!Tommy into the Vault for the final showdown and get imprisoned. Under the cut is a list of points that make me favor this interpretation.
1. This is a meta thing, but it wasn't cc!Dream who came up with Exile, cc!Tubbo came up with the idea when the obsidian walls around L'Manburg were already up, which was after c!Tommy griefed c!George's house. [clip] c!Dream couldn't have been going around with c!Puffy trying to frame c!Tommy to exile him because the idea of Exile hasn't been conceived yet at that point. He's clearly been trying to frame c!Tommy with some goal in mind though, and that goal was framing c!Tommy as a danger to L'Manburg to drive a wedge between c!Tubbo and c!Tommy. Interestingly, c!Tommy himself at one point in the Exile negotiations tells c!Tubbo that c!Dream is doing all of this to divide the two [timestamp].
2. At one point during the negotiations of Tommy's Exile, Dream abruptly goes "Tubbo, if you don’t wanna Exile him, that’s fine, give me the disc." [timestamp]
??? HUH ???
Throughout the negotiations, Dream upholds a veneer of fairness, so it'd be strange for him to suddenly lie about a deal there. And it's interesting how Dream brings up this alternative right after Tommy yet again tries to turn Tubbo against Dream. Reads to me like Dream worrying his attempts at persuasion aren't successful and trying to cut the negotiations short before Tubbo can change his mind.
The fact that Dream was willing to drop the whole thing if only Tubbo gave him the disc makes it seem very unlikely that his motivation behind exiling Tommy was subduing him by abusing him, which seems to be the most popular interpretation in the fandom.
3. As for Dream's actions in Exile, all of them are directed at keeping Tommy in place and both unwilling and unable to leave. Consistently destroying his items means Tommy can't build up enough equipment to escape since he wouldn't be able to defend himself. Physically punishing Tommy assures his obedience (and Dream's main demand was that Tommy doesn't leave Exile). He also puts plenty of effort into convincing Tommy that nobody back in L'Manburg wants him, that he's alone, that there is nothing for him outside Logstedshire and Dream (sabotaging the invites to Tommy's party + his overarching "I'm your only friend" thing).
4. Parallel to Exile, Dream spends a lot of time with Tubbo just... talking. Hanging out. Building up trust.
5. When Tommy does escape Dream sounds... bummed, but not all that worried. The way he treats Tommy finding refuge at Techno's makes it seem that he was fine with it so long as he knew where Tommy was. He needed Tommy to keep out of L'Manburg and away from Tubbo, and since c!Technoblade wasn't a fan of either, Tommy staying with the anarchist was acceptable.
And this is where it gets interesting because Dream tries to drag Tommy away from Techno right after Tommy and Tubbo interact for the first time. Prior to that, he seemed fine with letting the two be. He only intervened when it became clear that Tommy staying with Techno is not a guarantee that he and his friends won't be in contact.
6. When Dream's attempts to sabotage clingyduo's friendship and build up trust with Tubbo don't pay off the way he needed them to, he frames Tommy again — this time by blowing up the Community House. There we see the same story we saw in the Exile negotiations: Dream pushes the idea that by being affiliated with L'Manburg & Tubbo, Tommy endangers both, and to rid of that affiliation Tubbo has to exile Tommy give Dream the disc. Once he gets the disc, Dream immediately moves onto the next step of the plan: destroying L'Manburg. The previous step of his plan — acquiring both of the discs — has been accomplished. Exile was targeted at achieving that goal.
Some comments: As I've already mentioned, the most popular interpretation seems to be that the goal of Exile was permanently subduing c!Tommy by, well, demolishing his psyche. I think the point was temporarily subduing him to prevent c!Tommy from interacting with c!Tubbo until c!Dream got the disc. c!Dream still needed c!Tommy to follow him into the Vault, and he seemed more or less fine with c!Tommy escaping Exile so long as he kept away from c!Tubbo.
Still not sure whether c!Dream gains some sadistic glee from abusing c!Tommy. The interaction with Lazar makes it seem so, but an alternative interpretation is possible: c!Dream presenting his abuse as something he enjoys puts extra pressure on c!Tommy to be obedient. Their post-prison interaction does give more support in favor of c!Dream being sadistic towards c!Tommy, but whether or not he is sadistic doesn't change all that much about the character in the end. One way or the other, I don't think simple sadism can ever be his primary motive for anything because for that he'd have to start putting his own simpler emotional desires and feelings before his goal.
To reiterate: c!Dream pushed c!Tubbo into exiling c!Tommy to turn c!clingyduo against each other, abused c!Tommy to prevent him from interacting with c!Tubbo, and build up trust with c!Tubbo in the meantime in the hopes of getting the disc from him, which he needed for his plan to get imprisoned.

Why I Believe Endersmile Is Canon
Because I’m on a bit of an Endersmile binge--
This is all gonna be very messy and just me putting my thoughts together and I’ll probably not be going through the VODs for exact timestamps or anything because that’s exhausting and I applaud the people who do, but here are my thoughts on Endersmile and why I’m 100% convinced it’s canon. They’re besties your honor.
/rp Any names mentioned are referring to their dsmp characters and not the streamers themselves unless specified
First off: The Disc. Dream trusts Ranboo, a lot. He trusts him so much that he literally gave Ranboo one of the two discs he needed to pull off his big plan at the finale. He trusted Ranboo, so much that Ranboo deciding to give the disc back to Tommy or Tubbo wasn’t an option, even though Ranboo was friends with both, which he knew. I don’t know why he gave Ranboo the disc, or how he got the disc from Skeppy in the first place, and I’m sure he did have a hundred and one back up plans for if Ranboo did decide to give Tommy the disc, but asking Ranboo to hold onto the disc in the first place means Dream trusted him to a degree, and that’s big coming from Mr. “Reserved”.
Second: Knowing Dream’s Voice. Ranboo knows/remembers Dream’s voice well enough that he hears it whenever he’s in the panic room, that his subconscious uses Dream’s voice to force Ranboo to confront his fears. For a guy who hasn’t had any one on one time or conversations with Dream in VC on stream, he sure does a really good job imagining his voice. /s
Basically, they must have spoken, a lot. They must have spent time together outside planning for things or exchanging items or whatever. So much time, in fact, that Dream and Ranboo both end up sharing the same ideology of “People not sides” of “One big happy family” of “Being the person that stops conflicts” of “Being on all sides” of “Mediating between those sides” of “Choosing the side they think is right”.
During Ranboo’s prison visit dream/nightmare, the Voice tells Ranboo that the only reason Ranboo hasn’t been hearing it lately, is because he hasn’t been speaking with Dream as often. That Ranboo and Dream had talked with each other nearly everyday. And I’m inclined to believe that because the mere existence of the voice proves he’s heard Dream’s voice a lot, or he has a very good memory of Dream’s voice, which, considering his memory problems probably isn’t the case. This is further supported by how ever since Dream’s been in prison, ever since Ranboo banned himself from the prison, he hasn’t heard even a hint of Dream’s voice, not even as he’s remembering more and more.
Third: The Disc War Finale. During the disc war finale, we have in universe proof and out of character confirmation from both cc!Dream and cc!Ranboo that the characters had been staring at each other during the entire thing. Some friends on a discord server have also pointed out how Ranboo appeared to be avoiding Tommy’s gaze unless Tommy’s distracted. And during the entire thing Ranboo’s the only one not holding out a weapon, instead he’s got a book and quill in his hand. We’ve now also got confirmation that Ranboo was Enderwalking during the Disc War Finale, which makes all the strange behaviors make sense because if they’re friends, if they’re allies, then Ranboo didn’t show up to fight Dream. Then Dream might’ve been trying to convey something to Ranboo, like perhaps trying to keep Ranboo from doing something stupid and revealing their alliance. Especially if he planned on being put in Pandora, he really doesn’t need his friend to try and “save” him and ruin the whole plan.
Fourth: The Voice. I am inclined to believe the things the voice says. Why? Because everything the voice is talking about are all the things Ranboo doesn’t want to confront, doesn’t want to see, doesn’t want to remember. The voice isn’t malicious. It’s not even Dream, it’s just using Dream’s voice to make Ranboo listen. And Ranboo knows it’s just himself. (also out of character confirmation from the cc!s that the voice is NOT Dream and never has been, it’s just a manifestation of all the shit Ranboo’s repressed coming up and slapping him in the face) Everything the voice does, all the things it says, is trying to get Ranboo to remember the “bad” things he’s done, to remember that he was on Dream’s side. To force him to face that side of himself that might be capable of doing bad things, if there’s a good enough reason. It exaggerates things, it makes them out to be worse than they actually are, but that’s how it’s able to get Ranboo’s attention, that’s how it’s able to force him to think about those things. Ranboo won’t do anything until he’s forced to face the problem, the Voice is just trying to get Ranboo to do that.
This is why I believe Ranboo DID blow up the community house. Why he’s working with or has worked for Dream in the past. Why he willingly gave Dream his memory book, possibly to create a visible conflict between them and ensure no one would connect them as allies, like what Dream wanted to do with Punz. And also because the other things it’s said, such as Ranboo being given the Cat disc to hold onto, have been proven to be true. Nothing the Voice has said has been confirmed a lie. And many of the things it’s talked about aren’t things we or Ranboo can find the answer to unless he talks to Dream, which is until the dude’s rescued from the prison, isn’t happening. (cc!Dream where’s your Dream lore?!?!?!)
That said, if Ranboo was the one to blow up the community house, then Dream was covering for him during the Disc War Finale. He didn’t have to. He could’ve thrown Ranboo under the bus. But he chose to take on that blame, make himself look even worse in the eyes of everyone gathered there while he was at their mercy, to protect Ranboo from similar persecution. Doesn’t this remind you of anything? And Ranboo’s got a track record of making friends with those who help him.
Fifth: The Visits. Ranboo has visited Dream in prison multiple times. At the very least at least 2 times that we have direct confirmation of, and probably even more. His visits are consistent enough that just a few days after Ranboo bans himself from the prison, Dream notices and starts a strike, tells Sapnap that Ranboo’s stopped visiting, asks him, his best friend who literally threatened to perma-kill him if he were to ever leave his horrible situation, to send a message to Ranboo. (which, I guess Dream still kinda trusts Sapnap despite everything that’s happened, huh?)
Why would Ranboo visit? Unless they’re friends, unless they’re allies? Because even Dream’s so called best friend only ever visited once. Even Bad who Dream claims to have been the nicest only ever visited once. And while Tommy and Quackity visited more than once, their multiple visits have very clear reasons behind them, while Ranboo’s just, don’t.
And consider: How did Ranboo know about the things that were said during the Disc War Finale, word for word, line for line, that he wasn’t present for, unless someone’s told him? Unless he heard about it from Dream himself. Unless that was what they were talking about. Unless that’s part of the reason Ranboo kept visiting Dream.
Sixth: The Lessons. I don’t know about you, but giving life lessons to someone sounds like something you’d do with a friend, and not just a “puppet”. The whole lessons book gives off really mentor mentee vibes, and considering how Ranboo’s following in Dream’s goal of stopping conflict and uniting the server, well. And the lessons aren’t even malicious, or designed to push Ranboo away from others. In fact, many of them, especially the last few ones we see, are designed to protect Ranboo! Unless Ranboo’s safety was a top priority for Dream, there’s not much reason to pass those lessons down. This lines up incredibly well with Dream taking the blame of the community house’s destruction during the Disc War Finale, as well as his protective streak at his own expense when it comes to his allies and the people he cares about. Which means Ranboo is someone he cares about, which means they’re friends! They’re besties your honor!
Seventh: Ranboo’s Vehement Denial. Ranboo is infamous for being an unreliable narrator, for being in incredible denial despite all evidence supporting otherwise. Which means his vehement denial that Dream can be anything but bad is a fairly obvious red flag that that’s not true, and that Ranboo has reason to believe it’s not true, but chooses to actively ignore or forget those reasons and attempts to reinforce the “everything’s Dream’s fault, he can never change and will always be bad” mentality, that sounds like something he stole from Tommy or c!Dream antis, because he doesn’t want to face the fact that he has reasons for believing the opposite. At this point, I am 100% on board with the idea that all these unprompted instances of Dream hate is just a blatant cover up of how that’s not true at all. (Which he touches on, ever so briefly, when he renovates the second stronghold room)
Aaaaand that’s it! For the most part. I could touch on how Enderboo is hoarding all the backbone in this relationship and that the dynamic between Enderboo and Ranboo is closer to that of someone waking up after a sugar high or going for three days straight without sleep than it is two completely separate people or someone who’s literally sleepwalking (and that “Enderboo” is his normal state and “Ranboo” is the sleep deprived not thinking straight state). But this post is already obscenely long and I should end it here.
TL;DR: They’re besties, your honor.
Anyways, if you got this far, thanks for reading!

'technoblade has never questioned himself': a redirect rebuttal
normally i would never make a post like this but three people messaged me about it and since i just recently covered this, i thought i would come back but with actual sources and lay it all out. i'm also taking off my anarchist hat for most of the post and coming at this from a character standpoint only.
first and foremost, i want to point out that c!techno is not someone to talk about his feelings or even things he's done or things that have happened that are stressful/could bring conflict. we see this a lot (i was actually in the middle of writing a post about it as i think it's one of techno's main flaws). i'm not going pull up sources on this because i think if you've watched one techno lore stream, you'll know. so we kind of need to set expectations here.
if the expectation is c!techno just talking about it, then he has. he's mentioned it quite a few times. this clip here, he talks about how people think anarchism is violent because he's committed 'mass terrorism'. is it super thoughtful or in-depth? no. is it very much inline with how we know techno handles things? yes. now, if the issue is that techno responds in that sort of manner about, well, everything then that's a completely different conversation. and one i think is worth having! but again, to the direct issue of 'techno has never talked about it', he has, multiple times, particularly in the two syndicate streams (forming a secret organization and developing the syndicate) and in the 'first meeting' stream.
and in all of those examples, he displays a very techno-like admittance to the fact his tactics didn't work and aren't a good example. in this clip, he says that he's trying to be a better example in a conversation with c!niki about doomsday and anarchism. it's very clear that he knows it wasn't the best way to go about it and continues on to say that doomsday was only partially about anarchism and that his other motivation was revenge for what was done to him and phil.
he makes similar comments about his 'brand' during the first meeting stream while they're recruiting c!ranboo. once again, he says that the violence was him, not what anarchism is. (clip found here) when ranboo says that he would be good at helping rebrand since he's good at being nonviolent, techno agrees.
now, throughout that whole conversation, techno does push back on c!phil's statements about him becoming reformed, saying he wouldn't go that far. so, he has considered that violence isn't the best tactic and while he is trying to change it and put forth a better 'brand', he doesn't necessarily think he was wrong. which falls under the 'think about it even if he decides he was right' category.
and taking a step back from the roleplay angle, we know cc!techno isn't comfortable doing heavy lore or angst and so what we have here is his way of addressing those things. i can understand if people don't like that style or find it off-putting and i think that's valid but his reactions are consistent and everything he's said and done about doomsday falls under how we know he reacts to those things. again, this is a flaw of c!techno's, one i'm excited to address in the next post, but it doesn't mean that the topic hasn't been broached by c!techno because it has.
i resisted including any of the post red festival conversations though i think they're relevant as it's techno very clearly stating that violence didn't convince anyone that governments were wrong but in closing i do want to point out that techno is fully aware he's not a good person and, pre-doomsday, is attempting to be a good person in this clip.
in closing, i fundamentally disagree with the idea that he's never questioned himself/reflected on what he's done let alone that he's never even spoken about it because we see him do just that. it may not be a perfect example and that's completely fair, but he has done it. i genuinely feel badly about this post and it's so far out of the realm of what i normally do but i think it's important. i think people need to know what techno has said.

💀, 👻, and 🎦
💀 - i think it was a super interesting way to develop dream's character and allow for people to come back and do new stuff (i.e. wilbur and perhaps schlatt someday though ive somewhat given up on that :sob: but maybe connor now lmao)
like i think without it dream's hold over tommy wouldn't have been the same following the disc finale; which, if they wanted to end it there, would've been fine, but since they've continued since it makes it that much worse. exile was awful; but tommy escaped. revival isn't something tommy can escape and it means dream has that much more power over tommy. also i just like revival and necromancy and magical shit! i think it's neat! and i think it had a huge (positive) impact on wilbur's character. his first arc from l'manberg to nov 16 was a fully complete story, but being able to grapple with the aftermath of it has been incredible to watch and he's done such a good job.
and i think it creates a really cool dilemma for everyone. like imo the best way for everything with tommy and dream to end conclusively is for dream to die; preferably tommy or tubbo kill him. but the reason they didnt kill him during the disc finale was bc he had something they needed (and also bc him and punz had a plan with the prison). and that led to really interesting development for quackity and sam's characters and even techno's. so im a big fan!
👻 - i think wilbur is a filthy liar (<3 as he should be) and i think we need to remember that not only is c!wilbur an unreliable narrator but so is cc!wilbur. 1. he likes us to suffer 2. he just likes lying. so i don't fully believe him, but i wouldn't be shocked if ghostbur is in the same limbo wilbur was in BECAUSE i think they are fundamentally the same person, however much wilbur (c and cc) insists they aren't. i've had a pet theory since like. november or something that ghostbur isn't in limbo because either he never existed as a separate entity in the first place or bc he and alivebur combined the moment he was revived. i think ghostbur is everything cwilbur wishes he was, and he thinks hes not capable of the same kindnesses nor of receiving love in the same way. but he is! he is a fully complete person deserving of compassion in and of himself, and i think ghostbur is a reflection of that insecurity. so in my ideal world, theres a reveal that ghostbur was wilbur the whole time, appearing from limbo, or that ghostbur isnt in limbo and never was, that him and wilbur are now the same person. i don't know if that's where wilbur is going with it, but i will say i was very interested in the moments the other day when wilbur kept saying things ghostbur would say. very interesting!!!
ahhhh sorry for the essay i could talk about cwilbur for hours. but yeah i dont think ghostbur's ever coming back bc he shouldnt, in my opinion. also, tbh, i cannot imagine it feels good to have everyone beg you for info about the dead, soft, gentle version of your character rather than the one thats alive and messy and imperfect and hurting. like if i was him id be like yeah ghostburs dead forever bye bye you should like this version of wilbur and you should want that kind of love and kindness for him. but maybe thats just me!
🎥 - i really dont understand what counts as seasons tbh like everyone uses it differently so ill just say my favorite era (although i really love them all). i like the current era a lot, mostly bc ive been here for everything prison-break on (i started watching a little over a year ago) but i would probably have to say pogtopia is my fave (sorry i love angst). the drama of hiding away, of them losing everything just after they'd won it, wilburs character arc there is mwah mwah mwah, tubbos arc is incredible, and SCHLATT gd schlatt is such an incredible actor and character. ive been slowly getting through the backlog of big lore moments and by far ive enjoyed pogtopia above everything else.
ty for the ask!!

the difference between static and dynamic characters on the dream smp
Hi, hello, it's Ruby, back with another PSA because this fandom (specifically the people on Twitter) keeps getting worse.
/dsmp /rp
Recently, people started claiming c!Techno was boring because he never had any character development.
Now, this may come as a surprise to some of you, but if you in any capacity decide to study the ins and outs of creative writing, you'd learn that characters don't need to have character development to be compelling, loved by the audience, and have a complex personality.
This is what is called a static character. Not to be confused with flat characters. What's the difference?
Most articles seem to agree on this;
"Static characters should not be confused or mixed up with flat, one-dimensional characters. Though neither changes as the story progresses, if a character remains unchanged, it does not mean that he is one-dimensional like a flat character. A static character can be perfectly interesting, like Sherlock Holmes, who is completely ingenious, eccentric, and sometimes jerky. He never changes, but the audience still loves him. Thus, a static character could be the protagonist too, and a flat character, on the other hand, only plays a side role in the story." - ( link to definition )
Static characters are ones that don't experience any personal growth during the span of the story. They're often used in writing, because they're realistic and can be interesting if well-written. This article provides examples such as the aforementioned Sherlock Holmes, Captain America from The Avengers, and TommyInnit from the Drea- [gunshots]
But in all seriousness, c!Tommy is very easily a static character; a lot of the criticism of his character is about the fact that he doesn't change. He does gain experience and new relationships, he does suffer and becomes more and more traumatized, he does make choices out of impulse or emotion, but none of that is character development - he never overcomes his character flaws, including selfishness, stubbornness, and a lack of compassion or empathy for others. And I do not blame him for it as a person, and I do not consider him a badly-written character, even if he's a little frustrating to watch sometimes.
c!Tommy has two main reasons why he remains a static character.
a) he doesn't live in a constructive environment
It is normal for boys Tommy's age to be low on empathy. It's completely normal for them to be chaotic, immature pricks, because that is part of their growth. All of this would be just fine if c!Tommy was growing up in a highschool; however, he in actuality grew up on a land ruled by politics, wars and conflict.
I do not like using the age excuse, because I do not believe it makes his bad choices any more justified, but it's easy to realize why him being in such a position could stunt his personal growth.
At that age, you need guidance, whether it be from teachers, parents, or whatever other figures you're able to find around you. Usually, it is not difficult to find good people to look up to in today's world, but for c!Tommy, that isn't true.
In the pre-L'Manberg, post-Tommy era, there was moderate peace. Yes, there were conflicts, but none of them were damaging in the long term for anyone involved, and they were chaotic scuffles more than fights of ideals.
Once c!Wilbur came along, c!Tommy latched onto him. We all know how that went.
None of the adults Tommy had looked up to were in any capacity helpful to him growing or becoming a better person. He helped lead a revolution to help Wilbur gain power, he was lead to help Wilbur lead and unfair election, and witnessed the breakdown of the man he trusted shortly after. He was subjected to emotional manipulation by Dream, and then came to the wrong person for help. None of these things are reasons for positive change.
b) it's his major character flaw
Even in the few chances he had at genuine change, at forgiveness, at letting go, all provided by the environment or people around him, he didn't take them. Tommy doesn't like change, he fights it, and that is why he always loses. He doesn't want to change for the better, and he despises himself when he changes for the worse.
He looks for peace in a lack of activity, growth, or development. He searches for happiness in not letting go of the past, but hanging onto it for dear life, terrified that the people around him might change because he doesn't want to. And that is why, as long as he keeps this mindset, he'll never find it.
While other characters, such as Tubbo, Dream, Wilbur or Quackity seek to change the world around them, for the better or the worse, to rewind or to progress, and are willing to change themselves accordingly, Tommy does the opposite, because his biggest fear is people drifting apart and leaving him behind.
Let's get back to the point, then; what makes Technoblade a static character, and a good one at that?
His motivation is simple; he is a lawful character who sticks to his morals through thick and thin, follows a strict inner code, and is loyal to people above all.
On top of that, he is given no reason to change his morals.
No one's arguments against c!Techno have ever made much sense, let's be honest, and ever since he'd entered the server, Techno's been proven right over and over and over again.
He saw Wilbur face the consequences of having power over other people and then losing it, seeing the influence of corruption on the man he worked with. He was forced by the government to kill another person, to kill an ally, to kill an innocent. He was betrayed and used by the Pogtopian revolution, which knowingly kept things from Techno and fought to seize power, rather than destroy it. He was unfairly executed without a trial by corrupt politicians just absolutely demolishing the Geneva convention, holy crap people call Techno a war criminal, just in that one stream New L'Manberg commited so many war crimes-
Point stands that people say one thing and then do the other. Talk of freedom and then force people to do things (and no, forcing people not to force other people to do things doesn't count nor does it make Techno a hypocrite, get a better argument). Techno was never manipulated or swayed to someone's side against his ideals because he's not a man of words; he believes in what he sees, not what people tell him, especially since he's been repeatedly lied to.
That is the first thing a good static character needs; a strong motivation. Through everything that's happened, I'd say without a doubt that Technoblade has the strongest motivation out of everyone, which is to emancipate people from the tyranny of their rulers - not just sing about it and then establish a dictatorship - but to in fact do it, no matter the cost.
He's a very Paragon-type character, which is a common type of static; his moral code is too strong to allow emotional change.
Another thing a static character needs is personality. And Techno - if you watch his streams, not just others' perspectives - has a lot of that. From his bond with Phil and Ranboo to fondness of animals to sense of humour, the character is entertaining to watch and follow. You know what to expect of him, you know he won't betray, and that despite the flaws he has he will not let personal issues hold him back. He wins because he trains, and he puts hours into pulling crazy stunts, and he's persistent - it's satisfying for the people watching his perspective to see his efforts pay off.
His interactions with others are characterized by an attempt at kindness, no matter how many times he might fail at separating his personal life from the ideals he's pursuing.
And that is compelling! To draw parallels to Tommy again, the kid has so much personality that other characters could borrow from him and he'd still be fun to watch!
Neither Tommy nor Techno are flat characters, and I think that is the mistake a lot of people make when misinterpreting both the characters; Tommy and Techno are amazing examples of great static characters in fiction, and I'd like to applaud cc!Tommy and cc!Techno for being brilliant writers.
