Kallus's Eyes
So, I made a connection, Kallus is likely very light sensitive.
Our guy has Amber eyes.

---And his descriptions involving light are things like this:

---General knowledge of Amber eyes gives us this:

---And also from personal experience, I also have Amber eyes:
Tumblr media
--- I can tell you that even if it's cloudy in the middle of the day, I have a really hard time keeping my eyes open cause it's painful/uncomfortable. Low light conditions like dawn and dusk really are the most comfortable.
Thought it was kind of neat information to share about how Kallus likely interacts with his world and now I completely headcanon that he's very light sensitive. 💛

It's genuinely kind of upsetting how quickly social media's keep shooting themselves in the foot to just have something to show to higher ups and making their sites more and more user unfriendly. It reminds me of the Oreo CEO skit from College Humor/Dropout TV.
The new Discord update for mobile is genuinely disheartening by how little they seem to care about people hating the new layout. Which honestly, the DMs now being at the bottom and no longer swipping to see server members is annoying. But as someone who very easily gets god awful headaches from heavy contrast and light, the new "default" themes are... very unfriendly to people like me. Let me show you the difference in old Discord's dark mode vs the new:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, holy shit, it's Bad. The new one on the right is barely usable for me, it was giving me strain after only an hour or two of use. And it's not even their darkest mode, which is pure black, but it's their only other option aside from pure white in Light Mode.
If you don't want eyestrain, you'll have to pay the 10$ a month nitro not to get migraines. I have the 3$ version, and I can not change the theme with it to their other options. I was able to fix it by fighting all of my settings for an hour to get it back to the original color palette, but jfc. I shouldn't have to reset all my phone setting, open and relaunch discord, and pray that it decides the "automatic setting" is the non-eyeball burning classic dark mode.
The world and social media is just slowly getting more and more unuser friendly, especially towards people with light sensitivity (I can rant for hours about car headlight luminosity regulations). Just kinda disheartening to see Discord so adamantly against changing any of the new UI stuff, especially is they decide to no longer have the class color palette accessible in the future :/

hot take but websites/apps/browsers not having a dark mode setting is a form of structural ableism. bright ass screens can be a trigger for migraines, seizures, and a whole host of other bad symptoms. people deserve to browse the internet without having to burn their corneas out

Photosensitivity, or lightsensitivity, is such a wildly underdiscussed disability in my opinion ngl. Like, maybe just because it's one of the one's that's fucked my life over so repeatedly but there's so little you can do about it. Do you know how many websites and shit don't have dark mode? Do you know how much it sucks when you turn down the brightness and its still way too fucking bright for you? Do you know how hard it is for everything to constantly be too bright, even indoors? Or how shitty it is for so many shows/movies/games/websites to be inaccessible because, again, they're too bright? And its so hard to get doctors to listen to you about it too!
Like. 💀 Do you know how many times I've heard "just where sunglasses" in my life? Too many, motherfuckers. Way. Too. Many.

[ID: a reply by @girlcalledwhatsername on this post (link). the reply reads: “hey, how do the blackout curtains help with this? I've been having similar reading troubles for some years and I'm looking into different ways I can help it.” end ID]
thank you for this reply because i’ve been meaning to make a post about that & forgot! so i’ve had my issues with light for ages because of sensory processing + chronic migraines, but i developed more general light sensitivity about two years ago (probably due to a combination of dry eyes + UV sensitivity from rheumatological issues).
this has gotten way worse as i developed me/cfs, to the point where a few weeks ago if i woke up during daylight hours it’d be impossible to get back to sleep because even with the blinds fully shut & all my covers pulled over my head & my eyes shut, i’d be too fatigued / pained by the light to do anything but lay there feeling like shit.
& that was the point at which i got blackout curtains, and i wish i’d done it years ago back when i thought my light sensitivity “wasn’t bad enough” to merit it, because holy fuck. obviously i’m still super impaired (i’m fully homebound atm) but my fatigue, cognition, & mood have been so drastically improved, it’s literally been a difference of night & day (with night being the better option). so now i can read on my tablet in my little batcave without taking constant poison damage.
obv not a universal solution, & even though i got a comparatively cheaper model (i wanna say like $25 each for curtain set + rod?) they’re unfortunately definitely financially prohibitive for a lot of folks, but if you experience issues with light at any level of severity & have the means it could be worth a try! even if that’s not your biggest / main factor, making things a little easier on my body in a small way that’s within my control often has unexpected positive effects on the more severe issues i don’t have the resources to manage.
i really hope you’re able to find a solution that brings you some relief. sending you love & luck for your continued search 💓💓

I have a question for others who also have POTS and EDS. Is it common to get long lasting migraines? Cause I've gad the same one going kn 3 weeks. This is a verg neq symptom/medical condition for me. The worst part if it js the light sensitivity. Lights caue my brain to be stabbed very sharply in the front kf my head. It's horrible and has made jt so I ant actually look at any electronics for more then a quick glance on the dimmest setting. I've never been do happy to have the keyboard memorized. It means i cab write stuff like this with my eyes clsoe after I get to the webpage I need to be kn.
Is there anything to get rid of the migraine? Or at the very least to get rid if the sensitivity issue, cause I already have enough issues with my vision, and the additional one is make me unable to do anything not ro mention that it's making my brain not functioning properly. I do sudoku to hell my brain stay focus and cause it's fun, j like minding the patterns, but since week 2 started of the migraine. I can't thing enough to do any of the puzzles.
Thatvs not even mentioning the other new medical thing that I've been trying to ignore. A lot of the shadows in the conor kf my eye or in the black spots that invalid my vison, have been Turing into monsters. It's like I'm hallucinating or gone insane but thats not right. It doesn't line up for the family history. There not much else to aff update wise as my appointment with my neurological specialist isn't until April so we shall see how this goesa

It’s absolute bullshit that light sensitivity doesn’t give me better dark vision - like fuck, at least give me something to work with here! Some sort of equivalent exchange bullshit instead of “guess what light hurts! so your options are deal with it or run into a fucking table!”
