The Heritage Foundation Project 2025, Page 8
“Cultural institutions like public libraries and public health agencies are only as “independent” from public accountability as elected officials and voters permit.”
Two things I take away from this.
The first is that the concept of independence is implicitly anathema under Project 2025. The idea that an institution would take up and interpret a mission according to a set of internalized best practices, professionalism, evidence, and political agnosticism is unacceptable.
I realize that no human activity can ever be completely apolitical or free of error and bias, but there’s no room for benefit of the doubt that the Heritage Foundation has a set of what it is going to assert as objective truths about how public institutions must undertake their work and especially in the case of public health and libraries it will almost certainly not be in consultation with veteran practitioners.
We must avoid uncritical worship of expertise but we must also take expertise seriously rather than dismiss it out of hand because it disagrees with our aesthetic preferences.
The second is the positioning of public libraries and public health.
The CIA ran a clandestine abduction and torture program and then destroyed the tapes when subpoenaed by Congress. This wasn’t during the Cold War, it was in the 2000s.
There’s been exactly zero public reckoning with the efficacy and downstream consequences of the widespread use of drone strikes and kill capture raids as part of the Global War on Terror.
Dept of Homeland Security is accused of so many abuses of undocumented migrants that there are wars that have resulted in fewer civilian deaths.
A not insignificant part of the right believes that the FBI and Dept of Justice are complicit in persecuting Trump to sabotage his 2024 candidacy after colluding to undermine his Presidency and reelection bid.
But in the eyes of the Heritage Foundation, public libraries and public health are the menaces most worth singling out by name as dangerous renegades who must be brought back into compliance.
The Heritage Foundation is not 4Chan. It is not a collection of Substack cranks posting into the void. It’s a respected conservative think tank. Conservative politicians and government officials turn to it and it’s like for policy proposals and often ghost written legislation.
Take them seriously.
Take them literally.

I may have birthed a demon child
We went to the library this afternoon. It has a huge kids section. I went to browse and came back 10 mins later to this:
Tumblr media
If that's not demon sitting I don't know what is.
Oh and in case you're wondering. The book he picked up is:
Fortunately, The Milk
By Neil Gaimen
I am so surprised. This lil ND kid doesn't read much. He got into Dogman a few years ago but nothing's really clicked since then.
By the time he wanted to leave he was a 1/4 of the way through. And read more at bedtime!
Thank you Neil <3
Thank Somebody for libraries <3
But yeah also this child does not know how chairs work

the third edition of Julia Serano's foundational and ever-relevant Whipping Girl (the book in which the term 'transmisogyny' was coined!!) just came out, with a new afterword on the current anti-trans backlash and you can order a copy directly from her publisher using the code SERANO20 for 20% off through the end of march

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.
But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.

Here’s a list of times Danny has been spotted by the townspeople as Phantom outside of ghost fights!
1.) Laying down half asleep on a traffic light post, no one saw him fall
2.) Standing outside on the street during a big blizzard sipping what people are guessing was hot cocoa
3.) On the roof of Casper High looking at the sky
4.) In Casper High’s library browsing the outer space section
5.) In the park playing with a ghost puppy, who unfortunately kept turning into a large ghost dog and growling at anyone who tried to come close (it’s worth noting that Phantom kept trying to calm him down and apologizing, with the exception of Maddie, who seemed to make the ghost dog even angrier)
6.) Having a friendly chat with a large ghost wolf in the nearby woods
7.) On the street during a blizzard, waving at a large ghost resembling a yeti and going “Hi, dad! :D”
8.) Asleep on one of those couches in the local library with a book on astrophysics on his chest

Another thing that haunts me about this entire thing is that Amanda wasn’t just funny like her coworkers, or funny like other Disney and Nickelodeon actresses. Amanda Bynes was funny like Carol Burnett. Funny like Lucille Ball. She was effervescent and classic. Her comedic sensibilities were deeply intelligent. She had *it*. And she should have grown into one of the best actresses of our generation. But *something* happened and derailed it all. Even if she’s not the same, I truly hope she’s well and happy. I want nothing but the best for her, even if it’s a quiet and private life. I adored her back then and always will.

Project 2025 from the Heritage Foundation, page 5.
“Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders.”
Notice how they do not place any guard rails around what is pornography other than to vaguely associate it with transgenderism. This is the classic “just trust us” tactic of leaving a massively destructive and sweeping policy idea VERY open to interpretation.
The Heritage Foundation is not 4Chan. It is an EXTREMELY respected and very insidery think tank. These are not Twitter Nazis posting into the void. These are respected conservative academics. Policy wonks that cabinet members and politicians turn to for ideas and frequently entire ghost-written legislation.

“Reading is for everyone.”
Here is one of the coolest things I've found stuck in a library book recently! It's a bookmark from the Library of Congress that's in print and also incorporates a message in braille. It's advertising the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.
Learn more at the NLS website:
ETA: Thanks for all the love for this post!!! Here's a reblogged version which includes some great comments and a very helpful ID!!!

Dream of the Endless would be a great professor, but you know what else he'd be amazing at?
Children's Librarian
Kids are full of stories. He would absolutely love to hear them and help nurture that creativity. The really young ones could be read to and have nap time. Parents would love him. Kids would love him. Hob would love him.
also it would just be really cute 😌

Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!
#original#the last unicorn#tlu#peter s beagle#molly gru#schmendrick#schmendrick the magician#two of my favorite characters in anything right there in the center of the story! and I'm glad I saw the film first!#my reading ability has diminished due to trauma disability etc. but it seems like having a visual reference actually really helped!#no wonder i only ever want to read fan fic! turns out reading is not actually Superior to other types of Storytelling. it's just different.#to say otherwise is snobbishness I have been eminently guilty of in my life!#but like it is easier for me to consume tv and movies and that is fine actually. also that's why I'm doing a graphic novel lol#because i wanted to make something i would actually be able to read if i found it at a library. altho the audio book IS gonna be bomb#the audiobook is for visually impaired readers and anyone who wants or needs it! accessible stories for everyone! yeah!!#my gender was already transed but now I've gained an ADDITIONAL gender! which one? I'll never tell 😘#i am so powerful i have so much fuckin gender. my wife has no gender. and she is equally as powerful.#and also she has STUDIED THE BLADE#mostly zoro's blades from One Piece#normally YouTube recommends me shit movies like idiocracy or smth this is like if every day ur cat brought you a piece of rotten food and#then one day it brings you a BEAUTIFULLY ANIMATED TALE FEATURING MY BELOVED TWINK FUCK-UP WIZARD FRIEND AND MY ALL-TIME HOMEGIRL MOLLY GRU#and also it's soft and beautiful and funny and fucking weird!! i wrote melodies to the songs in the books on my ukulele

eddie loves the public library, once he moved in with wayne he would regularly bring home a stack of books and devour them. wayne had barely gotten his head around the last lot eddie regaled him with, before eddie was onto talking about the next.
eddie using the school library sometimes, though it had nothing on the public one. would watch as steve harrington slumped in during lunchtimes, face bruised, just looking for somewhere quiet.
eddie in the library, secretly spying on steve harrington on saturday. there with a brown curly haired kid. eddie uses dustin speaking a little too loudly about dnd as an excuse to go talk to them. show them where the best dragon books were kept. heart clenching over secretly catching steves warm smile as dustin gets exited.
the librarians of hawkins being some of his few supporters during that terrible week. having the same learned faith in him as wayne - that hurting someone just wasn't in eddies nature.
librarian eddie - crushing on but always being too embarrassed to talk to the guy who comes in for the audio books.
fantasy writer eddie dedicating his first novel to all public library employees across the country, and steve.
