Kumusta! First off, I'd just like to say you're a super big inspiration when it comes to learning about Filipino culture! It's cool to see someone in a similar position be able to accomplish a bunch and all of your resources have been super helpful. If you don't mind me asking, would you mind sharing what your process with learning Tagalog was like when you first started out? For example, how did you start out learning vocab or other skills? (sorry, i know this a super basic question)
Kumusta! Salamat sa tanong mo. The process went like this:
Basic grammar using text books and YouTube videos.
Vocabulary via constant reading & listening. I used fan fiction, songs, YouTube videos, shows etc. For the first 2-3 months I did not understand more than a few words but if you persevere you’ll see slow but rewarding progress.
I wrote down & repeated aloud words that would frequently be used. More importantly I wrote them with context; I used the words in sentences, not just in isolation.
As for “other skills”, I’m not sure what you mean exactly but I hope this can help you:
Speaking - I talk to myself a lot lol. I also talk to my Filipino friends
Writing - I wrote about my everyday life & thoughts in a journal using Tagalog & I texted my filo friends.
In summary:
learn basic grammar then focus on input; reading & listening.
Use methods you enjoy by incorporating your hobbies into language learning like how I used fanfiction and music.
Keep in mind the context of each word/ phrase
Bonus: know the context you want to use Tagalog/ your target language in because this will affect what vocab you need to learn. For example if you want to use Tagalog in a casual setting, you will need to take on a very different approach than a learner who wants to use Tagalog for work/business.

Day 3/365 no zero days challenge
français
Gained 180 XP on Duolingo
(Unrelated to French but related to the above point) I turned off notifications for when I go down on the dashboard because I would get so stressed about wanting to advance to the next level but that’s not necessarily what language learning is about. Because I would want to stay in top 7, I would direct a lot of energy doing Duolingo when I could be doing more effective language learning (no offense).
I responded back to my French penpal. One of the lasting topics of our conversation is Twilight and right now our subtopic is that Twilight is fucking weird and it's so fun to be talking about this and in a foreign language.
tagalog
I was supposed to have a 1-hour long class at 10am, but since I got back home around 3am and didn’t get any sleep, guess who slept through their alarm ? Language learning during the holidays really is an extra challenge
I wrote a small introduction text. I began by writing what I wanted to say in English, then, using tagalog.com (the BEST) and google translate, I rewrote the text in tagalog.
Reviewed how to conjugate -um verbs using this lovely video
Overall, spent around 1 hour studying :)
español
Did a journal entry! (Did I look up every word? Yes. But did it help to jog my memory and get re-acquainted with the language? YUP.)
Began my quest for a language exchange partner for Spanish! I'm currently speaking to someone, but I'm not sold quite yet on if we're compatible. At first, I was gonna wait to find a partner, but speaking is the best way to improve a language so I'm putting myself out there.
Did the italki language test and I received [drumroll] B2 ? I really though I would get A2 MAYBE B1 if a miracle happened. If you are not familiar with the Italki Language Test, I included my results down below :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is interesting how A1+ and B1-B2 makes B2. It's as if it's rounding up rather than finding the average.
I found myself laughing a lot throughout the whole test because I realized how SHIT my speaking is, but, hey, I'm all about that abundant mindset and I guess I got a lot to catch up on.
Although italki thinks that I am at B2 level (hilarious), I am still gonna consider myself A2

Living in the states as a Filipina-American kinda sucks because there's so much admiration for Japanese and Korean culture here that I feel more connected to those Asian cultures than my own
Where's my Tagalog-pop??? Where's the Tagalog punk rock at??? Why can I never find those songs with English translations?
The only connection I have to my Filipino heritage is the food and those random awkward phone calls from my grandma and cousins.
So yeah, for the new year I wanna learn Tagalog and listen to Tagalog music and learn more about Filipino culture
pls recommend Tagalog songs and/or youtube channels and/or language learning tips pls I really appreciate it

Sakaling hindi niyo malaman ang downside ng pagaral ng wika, eto yung journal entry ko ng kagabi:
Pagod na akong pagaaral ng Tagalog. Lagi ako magkamali. Lagi ako humahanap ng tamang salita at gumagamit ng diksionaryo. Ang hirap tangina. Gusto ko na sumuko pero alam ko pag ginawa ko yan, ‘di ako magpapatawad sa’king sarili.
In case you don’t know the downside of studying a language, here is my journal entry from last night:
I’m tried of studying Tagalog. I always make mistakes. I’m always looking for the right words and using a dictionary. It’s so fucking hard. I want to give up but I know if I do that, I won’t forgive myself.
Magiging mas honest na ako ngayon. Gusto ko ipakita sa inyong lahat na okay lang pag may kahirapan kayo at magkamali. Matuto ako ng ibang wika para kumonekta sa mga tao, hindi para maging perpekto o maging fluent man.
I’m going to be more honest with you guys from now on. I want to show you all that it’s okay to have setbacks and make mistakes. I learn another language not to be perfect or even fluent but to connect with people.

day 6/365 no zero days challenge
français
spoke with customers at work ! it's incredible, i can talk about the problems of the US in french, but stumble over asking someone if they want water :-)
español
one of the customers who came in was from mexico city, so i spoke a bit of spanish !
this was really good because it reminded me why i wanted to take up spanish again - to be able to speak with hispanohablantes ! ...like duh but it frustrates me whenever a hispanohablante comes in and i want to be able to speak with them in their native language, but i lack the vocabulary to do so
tagalog
i said "salamat" to one person today and...that's all
tomorrow i plan to spend more time with tagalog !
today was my weakest day of the whole week, but i did work for 8 hours, so i'll give myself a break.

Tim and Lucy engagement dinner, he takes her out to a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant in LA and surprises her by timidly asking if he can order for them. When the waiter comes around, he orders in clunky but clear Cantonese and Lucy spends the entire meal blushing, smiling, and desperate to take him home because she had no idea he had been learning.
