tag 9 people you'd like to know better
i was tagged weeks ago by @crackers4jenn (*waves* sorry it takes me ages, i'm a scatterbrain)
last song: had to check my youtube history because i rarely listen to music and apparently it was precious by depeche mode on July 12th, lol. it's the soundtrack at the end of bones 1x10 and rewatching the episode always makes me want to listen to the song again.
currently watching: of the shows that are still on right now, only what we do in the shadows. (i think how i met your father s2 officially ended, i mean to pick nancy drew back up but i don't remember where in s3 I fell behind) but i'm in a perpetual process of rewatching/watching so many things, just since the beginning of the summer i've rewatched s3-5 of community, the entirety of black books, went back to white collar which i had abandoned after s2 and watched s3-4 in full before getting distracted, i am also in a neverending rewatch of castle and bones that's been going on since like 2016. earlier this year i was rewatching rizzoli&isles, warehouse 13, grimm, etc. did not finish them all. i jump around a lot depending on my mood. also mean to get back to my lucifer and wynonna earp rewatch at some point. i very rare finish shows and then i get back and have to start from the beginning and then i don't finish anyway, it's a vicious circle, i don't like saying goodbye. also i have no attention span. i guess technically i am also in the process of watching hawaii five-0 but i haven't watched any new (for me) episodes in a loooong time because canon is such a drag compared to the happy au land i've been living in. i do also watch some shows that are on hiatus right now but i probably wouldn't even remember them all. i only remember when they come back. suffice to say i watch a lot of tv lol.
currently reading: embarrassingly, nothing. only stuff that comes up on my tumblr dash 🤷🏻‍♀️. i haven't even read fanfic since ao3 was blocked in my country in april of this year. because of how my brain works if you add an extra step to something i am used to doing (aka i have to turn on vpn to open ao3 links) i am just that much less likely to do it. i miss losing myself in a book but my brain is too preoccupied by my blorbos to be able to invest in anything new.
current obsession: probably shocking to no one who follows me, it's mcdanno. this ship ate my brain in november of 2021 and since then its hold on me has not lessened at all, probably got worse, lmao. i found myself unable to gather any feelings about any of my old long time ships because all that space has been eaten up by steve and danny's insane chemistry and frustrating and wonderful epic love story. also within the mcdanno fandom the obsession of recent months has been building/brainstorming aus with aron @emphasisonthehomo (best rp partner one could wish for) . and i guess you can call making mcdanno screencap edits and metas an obsession of its own.
tagging (no pressure, only if you want to): @emphasisonthehomo , @stephmcx , @trickster-archangel , @pepperf , @wordybee , @alexihawleys , @aflawedfashion , @annieaceofhearts , @lukeclvez

An illustration inspired by one of the (beautiful) images in the Ballet series by Katie Ponder, which I saw in vignette size and thought "oh, the tutu is a clock! Brilliant!" and then I saw in a bigger size and realized that the tutu was not, in fact, a clock, which felt like a missed opportunity. https://www.katieponderillustration.com/
Also inspired by the scene in Martin Scorcese's movie Goncharov (1973) where Katya remembers training to be a ballerina, back in Moscow. The quote is by Tolstov, and is the one quoted to Katya by Sofia in Goncharov during the church scene (although I've always thought that her dialogue in that one scene was a little hard to hear so I had to go back and enable subtitles to be able to really figure out what quote it was!)

Tumblrwoman Election Wrap-Up
To celebrate the end of this election, I'm gonna answer the rest of your questions!
First off:
Thanks everyone for participating! This ended up way bigger than expected. It was pretty exciting, seeing everybody chime in and participate.
Shoutout ESPECIALLY to all the people making fanarts, memes, etc... you people are incredible!!! Most of it can be found under #twe23, be sure to check it out, everybody!
Here's some highlights you people have made:
this github live number tracker made by @twilight-sparkle-irl during the vriska/katya poll. A THRILLING read!
this hollow knight miku oc by @anonymous-utility!! shes so cute...
@seasoned-cabbage made a wiki sandbox for the polls... it's so satisfying to see the stats laid out like this : D
@unidentifiedfroggy wrote fanfiction that just perfectly encapsulates the whole experience : ' )
General Q&A
"Who did you want to win?"
I myself think Vriska deserved the title most! I think vriska is just as integral to tumblr as Cecil is, if not more.
As for the other 2 involved, they didn't really care who won!
How often did you hear "Why are you pitting 2 bad bitches against each other"?
Often! One of us was going to count, but he got so annoyed that he stopped. You people need to get a new sentence.
"Why are there minors in a tumblrsexywoman contest?"
It's not a tumblr sexywoman contest, it's a tumblrwoman election! Before we made the poll, we considered whether it's better to throw out the minors or remove the "sexy" angle. We decided on the latter, mostly because this kind of competition would feel incomplete without tumblrgirls like miku and vriska.
Will you be doing this again next year?
Hm, not sure. Probably not! At least, I wasn't planning on it. We did this on a whim, and this is (SUPPOSED TO BE) my art blog.
I might make a blog for it next year, if these are still relevant and the demand is high (which i highly doubt).
Why didn't you answer my question?
I got like 130 asks this week and most of them were cries of pain and outrage. I was also incredibly busy irl until a day ago. If I didn't answer your question, Sorry!
Concerns about Corruption
According to the tags on these, every single one of the polls was rigged in some way or another. Particularly grievous examples of this were Miku's loss (I suspect Vriskavoters doing foul play (I am vriskavoters. I voted Bayonetta to sabotage Miku. Then i spent the whole day listening to Miku voicebank comparisons.)), and Marcie's win (Somebody accused the Adventure time subreddit of having swamped the poll. The post in question had 19 upvotes. The poll on tumblr had 92,123 votes).
What's more, I've been offered bribes!! Several american dollars! The political landscape of tumblr sure is a scary place...
Manners
Some of you really don't know how to act. This goes out to a small (but very, very vocal) minority - don't be a dick! Just because it's the internet does not mean you can just insult random strangers! This is a poll about fictional women, this is NOT a place to call people the r-word or imply someone is stupid for liking a character.
Some people left pretty graphic, violent messages. Most of these were jokes, but still. Take caution with the words you choose. This should go without saying, but telling strangers to "eat glass" and the like is not acceptable behaviour.
In the end, this was a competition between fictional characters, so seeing people arguing in the replies and trying to gain some sort of moral high ground was a little bit saddening.
Most of you were nice though, luckily : )
Thanks
To everyone who left kind messages, to everyone engaging and having fun, the fan art, the posts, to everyone expressing their thanks to us - thank you!!!
In the end, this was a lot of fun, and it was nice to see the website come together like that!
What's next?
For the next few days, I'm going to be promoting my friends' projects as much as I can to scare all of you people off of my blog.
I got WAY too many followers from this and frankly, that is simply not acceptable. You all need to leave NOW, because I want to get back to posting art eventually and I would rather not be on everybody's timeline.
That's why I have decided to become a massive sell out and reblog my friends' stuff on main for a bit. Peace!

Goncharov's story ended on a bridge, and one way or another, Sofia and Katya were there first. A (very) short VN game considering the relationship between two women tangled up in the greatest mafia movie of all time.
============= Other Info
Goncharov is a RenP'y game, submitted to the Goncharov Game Jam.
Status: Completed Genre: Unreality, Romance, Dark
CW: Blood, death, gun
============= Playthrough
First Played: Dec-2022 Last Played: 1-Sept-2023 Playtime: around 30min (2 endings) Rating: 8/10 Thoughts: The Iconic Bridge Scene
============= Review
Goncharov is a fairly short highly-stylised VN, whose story is based on the iconic bridge scene of the movie, a climax between Katya and Sofia, as truth is revealed, but betrayals can still happen... There are four endings to this game.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
The game was insanely gorgeous. Fully in black and white save for some crimson accent, the visuals portray Sofia and Katya at a stand-still on the bridge, the former wearing a dress and pointing a gun at the latter, wearing a pantsuit. Behind them, the coast of Naples, with a setting sun, with red lines encircling it slowly clockwise. A slight wind brushes through their hair and the hanging dress. The theme helps set the dramatic scene. The subtle animations even gives it that extra oomph.
While the game is titled Goncharov, it refers only in passing to the main character of the movie/meme, focusing instead on those two women*. While it is mentioned Goncharov is coming to take Katya down, he does not show his face, relegated to a line to further Katya's point. The story is about those two women, the betrayal of one of them, and the fatalistic end of their story. *Katya is married to Goncharov, taking on this name as well.
There are three choices in this story, pertaining to Sofia's past actions (killing), Katya's attire, and Katya's beliefs. Each offer one to two screens of variation after the choice. While at least one of these choices will affect the end, I have only found two. I have been wondering if the circling background may be some sort of timer affecting the ending?
I found the topic of Katya's attire quite interesting. It seemed as if she had realised who she really was, and what her place in the world might be, leaving behind the ultra-feminine glamorous outfit as was expected of her being a mafioso's wife for a more masculine relaxed and easier to move around outfit. Shedding herself to the core. A sort of emancipation - which would have fit with the period the "movie" was set to have been released (70s).
Though this might not be the ending I have in my heart for both women, I found the ending where time ran out on Katya the most striking. The fade-to-... white was particularly well done.

Goncharov references in BIONICLE
With people on here finally coming around to the cinematic masterpiece that is Goncharov (1973, dir. Marton Scorsese) I wanted to discuss how the film's influence actually weaved its way into Bionicle, because there are actually a TON of niche references to it, especially in the Piraka in the Voya Nui arc.
Little known fact, while Goncharov (1973) had an extremely limited release in the U.S., it actually saw a small theatrical release in Denmark due to different film distribution laws there enabling a few screenings where it became a cult classic. Because of this, many of the people working in Lego actually saw the movie and were huge fans, particularly several members of the story team. This included Bionicle author Greg Farshtey, who despite being American was actually shown the film by another Bionicle team member while on a business trip to Billund, Denmark in 2005. Greg was immediately enamored by the brilliant storytelling, and he and a few other team members decided to incorperate references to it in the 2006 Voya Nui arc that they were writing at the time. And BOY does it show.
Now obviously you've got the surface level references, such as Thok's Ice-Gun/Pick weapon being a reference to Ice Pick Joe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ice Pick Joe art by @sleepymccoy)
But there's also much deeper parallels in the story beats and themes. So much of the backstory of the Piraka feels like an attempt to fill in the deliberately ambiguous details of the characters' pasts.
Goncharov and Katya coming from a life of both crime and oppression only to flee to a new land in order to make a name for themselves in a criminal empire is paralleled by how the Piraka fled to Voya Nui to form their own criminal gang after breaking off from the Dark Hunters.
The short flashback sequences where Kayta talks about her past, her abusive father is always framed in shadow, he is The Shadowed One.
Hakann and Thok's dynamic is lifted directly from Goncharov and Andrey, how they schemed to share power together, and were drawn to each other, but inevitably tore each other apart through betrayal.
Meanwhile, Vezok is Katya to Hakann's Goncharov. Hakkan and Vezok arrived in the Dark Hunter's together, much as Goncharov and Katya arrived in Naples together. And despite the underlying resentment that fueled their relationship, they are undeniably bound to each other. One of the most brilliantly niche references was when Hakann hit Vezok with the Spear of Fusion, which result in him being split apart to form Vezon. This is almost certainly a reference to the conversation between Katya and Sofia where Katya describes a fight she had with Goncharov when they first were traveling to Napels where she says "his words were like spear that pierced me, split me in two, and I haven't felt whole since. I sometimes wonder where the part of me I left behind went, and if she found happiness". It is implied that Katya's more violent tendencies became more apparent after this, much like Vezok became much more angry and violent after being split from Vezon.
Anyways these are just some of the subtle references to Goncharov in Bionicle. One masterpiece influences another, as is the way with art.
(I've really loved this collective storytelling meme we've made here. Making up references and analysis to something we're all just making up satisfies both the analytical and little shit parts of me. The Goncharov references are fake, but the Bionicle ones are Real!)

Bored so I'm gonna talk about color in Goncharov, specifically the color white because omg this is brilliant
I know tumblr just lovesss its color theory memes, but in Goncharov it honestly feels so obvious but the deeper meaning when applied is so fascinating
The most obvious example of this, of course, is Sofia. She's wearing a white jacket and white skirt when we first meet her, she wears a white apron at the cafe she works at, she almost exclusively wears white eyeshadow except for scenes where her face is bare (almost always around Katya👀) the lighter she uses to light her cigarettes is silver with white decals, the dresses she wears are all shades of white or cream, you get the idea.
This is because white represents innocence, and so does Sofia. Sofia is an outsider, she is not part of the mafia, has no associations with them (at a glance but I'll get to that later) and is essentially the "good" girl in this story. Sofia almost always wears white, while Goncharov almost always wears black. It's far from subtle imagery.
Outside of Sofia, there is still a good amount of white throughout. My favorite is the cat that Goncharov encounters on that late night walk pondering what to do after the shootout, it's remarkably quiet, we only really hear footsteps and Goncharov's breaths, and then we hear a cat meow. We then see the white cat as it cautiously approaches Goncharov. It does not run from him in fright. It does not hiss at him. Goncharov does not shoo it away. Innocence is still attracted to Goncharov, and he is fine to welcome it in, as shown when he picks up the cat and does not harm it. It's very deliberate that a street cat is pure white.
Another example is Katya's iconic dress in the ballroom scene. She attends the party, arriving separately from Goncharov, as she just had her conversation with Sofia, the innocence. She is working against Goncharov's wishes and ideals, and her wearing white while he wears a black suit and black tie is more contrasting imagery. Katya desires her freedom, feigns her innocence, while secretly the audience knows about the dagger with the black handle strapped to her thigh.
The only other time Katya wears white is the scene in Sofia's bedroom. She's wearing Sofia's robe, she is allowing herself to give into Sofia and attempts to reclaim her innocence, but like the dress at the party it's just a costume. She takes it off before she leave's Sofia's home. The innocence cannot stay.
Back to Sofia, the boat scene where she is wearing the white dress is of course memorable, doubly so when blood spatters on her face and the dress itself in the confrontation. There is no denying this world from Sofia anymore. She is stained. She wipes the blood off her face and her dress with her hands. Blood is now on her hands. More and more deliberate imagery.
Speaking of, remember what I said about her not being associated with the mafia "at a glance"? Well, as people have suggested, the reason Sofia's parents are dead might be because they were involved in the mafia, and killed, without Sofia's knowledge of their involvement. Goncharov recognizes her when his associate says her last name, and although it prompts him to ask "the waitress at the cafe my wife frequents?" the surprised look of recognition on his face might be because he knew about Sofia's parents and what happened to them. The scene where Sofia mentions her parents being gone, she is applying red lipstick. Red like blood.
My favorite black vs white contrasting imagery is the scene where Sofia confronts Goncharov about his marriage to her best friend. Sofia is once again clothed in white, and Goncharov is dressed in black, except. Sofia is wearing the necklace of black pearls Katya gifted her, and Goncharov is wearing the ivory wristwatch he took from Ice Pick Joe's home. Sofia is showing off the sign of her corruption. Goncharov is presenting proof of his innocence. Neither of them are who they pretend to be. The corruption to their characters is there, but not in full. It's an accessory.

8, 13 and/or 22 for the goncharov ask, please? Hope you are having a great day!
Thank you for the ask! Any excuse to talk about blorbos
8) A quote from the movie I use on the daily
I have to admit I didn't know the film existed until yesterday when it started trending, idk how it managed to escape me, maybe bacause I'm not American? So I haven't had a chance to abuse any of the quotes. "Do you hear the clock ticking?" would've been an easy answer, but I think Mario's "God is looking away, anything can happen" has great meme potential, only in the way that the jokes based on tragic moments in media are the funniest (that dw post with Rose from Doomsday photoshopped into a picture of a vending machine? Still cracks me up as much as the actual scene makes me cry).
13) My favourite ship
Not to sound basic or anything, but it's Katya/Sofia, any day. Maybe I'm just gay, but no one does it like them. The codependency? The loneliness and isolation that they are in together? The childhood friends to strangers to enemies to maybe lovers thing they got going on? Impeccable. Honestly the fact that they found each other again, in Naples of all places, so far from the town they both grew up in, seems more like fate that anything that Katya and Goncharov have. I just wish we could see more of them than the seventies dudebro mafia thriller was willing to show us. We could've had it all if Scorsese and Mateo JWHJ0715 weren't cowards.
And here I absolutely have to address the religious themes. I don't even think that the creators understood the implication, it's not like 1970's Americans knew a lot about life in Soviet Russia, but we have to understand that both Katya and Sofia have most likely spent their formative years in a very anti-religious culture (hell, Goncharov himself makes a mistake of talking dismissively about faith in a deeply catholic country). And who Katya gives her dead father's Saint Nickolai locket to? Sofia. She is willing to part with the thing that protects her to keep Sofia safe. It might've been played in the film as not that big of a deal, but the implications! I'm going to combust!
22) My favourite Goncharov reference in unrelated media
This question is definitely the hardest because I am not much of a film connoisseur, I only watched Goncharov bc everyone was talking about it. I guess taking another JWHJ0715's work is cheating, since it's not entirely unrelated, but it's the best I got.
JWHJ0715's written the screenplay for a movie "Back At Last" that we studied at uni at some point as a part of a post-modernism course. The set up is different to Goncharov, but the themes are pretty similar, it's obvious that he has been drawing inspiration from his older work more than a decade later. So in this one in the big climactic scene in the end the main character says to her husband "Spring comes to Florence", with Florence being the hometown of both of them. I didn't realize it at the moment, but this most definitely was a "Goncharov" callback, but with an insight of the older Mateo, and the movie really reflects that change. I just think it's sweet that the implicit message here is that after winter there is always spring. "Goncharov" might have reflected Mateo's more pessimistic outlook on life, but in twelve years he is able to look back and say "it does get better, you can come back home again", which, knowing his life story, makes me cry a little bit. Idk, I may be looking too deeply into it, as I tend to do, but oh well, that's what makes engaging with media fun!

1 and 19 for Katya :3 for the edgy OC asks
Edgy/Misc OC Ask Meme
Well, hello :3 Thanks for making me think hahaha
01. What memory would your OC rather just forget?
Despite the dozen of regrets she keeps dragging around, Ekaterina doesn’t give her a chance to forget. Because what's the point pretending nothing happened while lives and fates of beloved people once (or even twice) were on her hands? And even if she wasn’t the true reason for their doom/unhappiness, she was there. She could have done better. Or not. Nobody knows. She will never know.
19. How does your OC behave when enraged?
Before the last attack of her biological mother, Ekaterina used to restrain her anger as tight as possible. One time or another she let flames escape through her fingers and people with dubious moral were not forgiven, and later she felt awful for that. But after the incident that really pushed her to the edge, she started to learn that the brighter the light, the darker the shadows. Her rage is hers. As her pain, her hope, dreams, and all her being. It should never be forsaken.
She still has a calm temper, though. It takes a lot to truly piss her off. But now, when she feels the hot waves breaking on her, she let them roar as long as they don’t touch innocent people.

How do the girlies react to Goncharov? (Movie or Meme, the choice is yours)
The Goncharov Meme;
S1 Tecna: Making up a movie is completely and utterly illogical. Why on any planet would someone just decide to lie for no reason—
S3 Tecna, stumbling into her dorm room: MUSA IM MAKING A GONCHAROV DELETED SCENES REEL AND I NEED MUSIC FOR IT. CAN YOU HELP ME?!
Yeah Tecna either competely doesn't understand the meme or she's beyond invested in the nonsense and having the time of her fucking life making shit up about a movie that doesn't exist for no reason. In her defence, she gets really bored in class, and Goncharov posting is hella amusing
Katya is her favorite character
As for the other girls, they don't care as much
Stella finds it to be really funny, and makes a post saying that she was an extra in the movie, because she can
Bloom is absolutely in love with all the fake posters and fanart. Seriously its so beautiful, and so thematic. She is going through the tag, enjoying all the arts
Musa would find it a little amusing, randomly decide to make a fake utterly absurd discourse post about Goncharov, and Aisha would immediately respond with her own absurd take, and now they're having a fake argument about Ice Pick Joe and having a fucking ball doing it
Flora thinks the meme is neat and then puts her phone down. That's enough technology for today
The Goncharov Movie;
The movie however, yeah no, most of them are not interested
It's a Mafia movie and that doesn't appeal to most of them
Stella just wouldn't have the patience for the slow build and tension, Bloom is weirdly squeamish about violence and doesn't like how bloody everything is, and Tecna is NOT interested in this dull primitive shit. Tecna either watches dry documentaries or bad shit insane anime, and there is NO in between
Aisha would think the movie is good, but still not be super interested in it. Slow paced crime dramas are not her thing, she prefers things that are more action packed, but she does have the patience to sit though it and enjoy the movie for what it is. Also the themes in the movie about running out of time and hiding your true self hit a little too close to home for her, and she doesn't enjoy thinking about that, thank you very much
Flora and Musa are the ones who actually like the movie
I feel like Flora is a personal who would really enjoy a subtle slow paced story with a lot of themes and symbolism and ideas to really pick apart and rotate around in her brain long after she finishes the movie. If you get talking about the meaning and usages of the cigarettes, clocks, and colors symbolism she will literally never shut up about it
Musa on the other hand is just a sucker for a good tragedy, and Goncharov is a AMAZING one. Katya choice and betrayal gets her literally every single time. Like...she will never get over the boat scene, ever, she loves it. And when Katya and Sofia talked outside after the club scene and Katya is debating what she truly wants in life and Sofia accidentally encourages her to fake her own death? She's screaming. Katya ending, where all her plans succeed in the most monkey paws way imaginable has her by the heart, ok? She just, really likes a good tragedy lol

Having some trouble with the image for Sofia/Katya... Obviously there are no canon visuals... There's the popular Goncharov poster made by @/beelzeebub, but Sofia seems to have been invented later...
Right now I've just got the picture of the label on the boots that sparked the meme, but it seems a little unfair when every other pairing has a visual representation.
So… well… I never thought I'd ask this... Does anyone have Goncharov fanart they'd let me use for a poll image…?

Trixie & Katya Watch Mean Girls
Tumblr media
I still cannot believe they watched this lol
Sister dick make you sick — well that’s an intro
Under the cut because so many iconic references
Dual wavy hair!!!
Holy shit you have no breasts on
Not on the east coast
I’m not saying you have to like it — yes she is lmao
I have a legitimate question for those of you who are younger: had/have any of you not seen Mean Girls? Or are movies like Mean Girls & Clueless things that y’all watch?
Liz Lemon — okay I live for 30 Rock being Trixie’s point of reference for Tina Fey
Do I want to talk about it? You’re out of pocket
Can we talk about Katya’s shoes? 😍
I was the male version of Janice in high school
That’s why her hair is so big: it’s full of secrets
Do you have anybody in your life who’s really gorgeous & cruel?
My stress dreams are being in high school, not remembering where my locker is or what the combination is, & that I’ve missed a class all semester
It’s 20 years old — it’s 18 but that’s still shocking
To me those are the losers. They’re mean, they’re stuck up, & they’re not having fun — amen
She looks like she’s wearing her mom’s clothes — I wish I understood why we had a phase of business casual clothes being a thing
On Wednesdays we wear pink
Do you have pictures?
Get in loser we’re going shopping
and you’re not ready
I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom
Is that what this comes from? — Katya discovering Mean Girls is too much omg
There should be a Drag Race Burn Book I think it’s called Twitter
It’s wild to me that Katya’s family had a pool but not caller ID
It’s October 3rd Is that a thing? 😂 omg this is hysterical
Flirting Oh I love that
I’m a mouse. Duh
Katya getting scared 🥺🥺🥺 and grabbing Trixie’s wrist 🥺🥺🥺
The fact that Katya didn’t even know when she did this dance that it was from this
SO FETCH
This is a meme
Katya reacting this this for the first time is so fucking amazing
I’m sick / Boo you whore
I wish they had included you can’t just ask people why they’re white
Rachel McAdams. That’s it — no exactly Trixie gets it
Katya’s grip on Trixie’s knee
She doesn’t even go here
Go be nice to someone
Do you know that these moments of triumph in an academic setting in movies always make me cry
The limit does not exist
I’ve seen the end of this movie so many times watching Drag Race season 14 on VH1

the second, from Of Our Own Device: Tancred Hawke sat relaxing against the back of the rabbit run behind the Hawke family cottage, running their fingers through the soft fur of their favorite rabbit, Coney.
the third, from Tumbling Through and Through: Ilanlas Mahariel looked down at the other warden beside him, bemused.
the fourth, from Wintergreen: The heroine Sidestep had always been known to favor the color green.
the fifth, from To Become Something Greater: One breath.
the sixth, from Cascade: Artificial sunlight cascaded through the windows where by all logic, it should have been dark, as there was a building directly blocking the actual sun.
the seventh, from Bonemeal: This story begins the way so many do, with a man walking.
the eighth, from One Breath, Two: Bethany half-ran, half-staggered through the streets of Kirkwall.
the ninth, from The End Never Comes: At first Varric reads his manuscripts aloud because Isabela insists upon it, so despite his protests and a strange reluctance (“Come on now!” Isabela goads him, pushing a bare foot against his stomach where they are casually reclined at opposite ends of his bed, “You know I can’t do the voices for shit, and it always sounds so much better with chocolate you can hear oozing between every word.” Varric huffs and sighs, “You’re ridiculous,” but he gives in, as he always will for her or any of his friends) he will and he does.
the tenth, from There's Something Unpredictable: The grandfather clock kept a quiet, relentless tally of the number of times Katya had circled the room.

I know we all like how Ice Pick Joe is kind of a meme. They play him for slapstick a lot. Oh, he's just the guy with the ice pick who murders people. But that's what makes the final scene when Goncharov kills him even sadder. When he's been shot and bleeding out, his ice pick clutched in his hand, what does he say to Goncharov? "Damn, Goncharov, you're just as mad as I am."
Ignoring the vintage ableism of the word 'mad', that's the point of his entire character. Everyone win the film (except Sofia my beloved) is a bloodthirsty murderer. It was only the perspective and framing which made Goncharov, Katya, and Andrey's murderous revenge appear like an epic tragedy, and Ice Pick Joe's an almost humorously weird b-plot. After all, as a lot of you have pointed out the subtext about Ice Pick Joe and mental illness/lobotomies, or even gender non-conformity. That statement invites the audience to reconsider his entire character, his motivation, and almost humanises him in the same way it does the other frankly horrible characters in the film. It demands you take him just as seriously as you do Goncharov.
