So I was reading Karen from HR(go read it!) by Unpretty(go follow her!!) last night and I think it crystalized for me part of why I LOVE her characterization of Bruce Wayne so much(I mean: just basically that she treats ALL the characters as WHOLE PEOPLE rather than split-personalities ala the wornout Kill Bill analysis of Superman[which you weren't SUPPOSED to agree with! Bill's the VILLAIN GUYS!! But that's a different essay u_u] is Enough but she does so much more...), namely:
"Batman" isn't a way Bruce deals with his trauma, it's a way he AVOIDS dealing with his trauma.
Yes this is an analysis post about a fanfic |:| Obvsl, ***Spoilers*** |:| |:|
Ok so here we go: This is Bruce reacting to the grief of Corinne's co-workers at her death
He wanted to put distance between them. It wasn't fair to any of them to be irritated. It wasn't their fault. Nails on a chalkboard, their noisy grief repulsive. The self-centered way the living mourned their memory of the dead. Accepted death as a force of nature, an act of god. No fury in them, no action. No problems to be fixed. A hole in their lives to fill with tears until they couldn't feel the emptiness anymore.
Don't worry, he knows how fucked up it is to think this way and there are lines immediately following which show that(he is so well characterized in this and all related works PLEASE Trust me, Dear Readers) but I want to focus on THIS and what it says about how BRUCE relates to grief and mourning.
He thinks mourning is a way to put death behind you; a way to center your OWN feelings of grief and loss in the midst of something terrible which has happened to SOMEONE ELSE. Right off the bat(heh) this is telling us he has NEVER let himself mourn for his parents because he's talking about it in 3rd Person; as something separate from himself(and please don't sleep on how he also talks about The Living in the same way, implicitly classifying himself outside that category as well) Bruce is a Raw-Fucking-Nerve 24/7, and has been since his parents' were killed right in front of him, and refuses to heal or even face his emotions about that event because doing either might mean moving on and he thinks that would be selfish.
Actually, let's look at another line from before this which I think clarifies his emotional reality wonderfully:
He looked out at all the employees, all huddled together in different groups, whispering and checking their phones and waiting for the police to tell them they could leave. Some of them crying. Everyone giving him a wide berth. There was blood on his shirt. Bruce Wayne didn't have any reason to be handling this well. Shouldn't have been handling this well. Safer for the sake of secrets not to handle it well. With that decided, he found the nearest trash can and started heaving into it. Better. He hadn't done that in years. He grabbed a flute of champagne from the abandoned buffet table and downed it like a shot, then another. It helped get the taste of acid off his tongue. He let his hands shake. It felt like a normal thing to happen, his hands shaking.
Allowing himself the physical expressions of grief and trauma soothes him; feels normal. Because it's not something he's let himself do in years(probably lying to himself here; probably since the murders). He can only psychologically allow himself to physically grieve as an act to keep up appearances; he can only grieve by disassociating. Which of course also means he's never PRIVATELY allowed himself this grief. Jesus-Fuck
Let's jump forward, to an exchange with Dick Grayson(first robin/nightwing), to drive this point home. It's a longer dialogue I don't want to include all of so the context: Corinne died before earlier in the week and Nightwing found her, but she revived and left the scene before he returned from catching the culprit, and Dick just told this to Bruce:
"You could have talked to me about it," Bruce added, looking at the ballroom and not at him. "When that happened. How you were. Feeling." Nightwing huffed a sound that wasn't a laugh. "Right," he said. "Sure." Bruce grit his teeth. Nightwing clapped him on the shoulder. "Let's do that," he said. "You can come over later, tell me how you're feeling about all this." Bruce said nothing. "Yeah," Nightwing said, patting his shoulder as he disengaged and stepped away. "That's what I figured."
There is so much here, and it all hurts so good. 1)Bruce is thinking of himself as Bruce; again Unpretty treats the "secret-identity" superheroes as what they are, facades; Bruce does not think of himself as Batman, Batman is a persona-tool(one might say a worksona :3) Bruce uses 2) but Dick isn't Dick even when he's in his civvies he's Nightwing, because Bruce needs to distance and disassociate himself from the emotions he won't let himself process and that's what he uses the personas to do 3)this is made explicit by both his passive refusal of Dick's sympathy and offer of comfort, and the bitter sarcasm of Dick's offer of it, which communicates this is an offer that has always been there, and always been denied. Dick cares for Bruce and wants to help him heal but knows Bruce won't let him care for him and won't heal, and this refusal has visibly damaged their relationship.
Oh and 4) "You could have talked to me about it": Bruce's desire to help others is tied directly to his refusal to let others help him, and his refusal to mourn his parents/let himself grieve/heal. Because his desire to help IS a trauma-response, because you Can't Actually Just Suppress This Shit Away. This situation is So Fucked Up for Dick: Dick wants to be comforted by Bruce as much as he wants to comfort him, but he knows letting Bruce comfort him would Only Reinforce His Pain; Would Only PUSH HIM FURTHER AWAY. Again I say to you: Jesus-Fuck.
Ok so: this next bit isn't directly related to this, it's more of like a second-order thing, but a few chapters later Bruce is helping Corinne make empanadas and he talks about his dad and I think this is also Quite Revealing:
..."My father liked to cook," Bruce said eventually as he peeled paper away from garlic to pull away cloves. "He was very passionate about food. About joy."...
I'm going to skip around a bit here cuz it's in the context of a much longer/larger scene
..."We had a chef, but he liked to make meals himself when he could. Food as a symbol, food as a way to love himself, to love life. Finding joy in the work it takes for even a fleeting moment of happiness, gone in the time it takes to clear a plate."... .... "I don't have that," Bruce said. "His sense of taste. I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything as much as he enjoyed good soup."
BRUUUUUUUUCE!!!! No wonder everyone wants to fuck this man. We can fix him, guys; WE CAN FIX HIM NO SHUTUP EVERYBODY BEFORE WERE ALL DOING IT WRONG BUT WE GET IT WE CA- ok I'll stop now.
First I want to be mean for a little bit and call bullshit here cuz unpretty's Bruce is One of the most Eloquent Motherfuckers Around. Fuck You You don't enjoy things "Food as a symbol, food as a way to love himself, to love life" Goddaminit just admit you love your dad you son of a bitch!!! And while you're at it, admit you like to talk so that words sound good leaving noisehole!!! Admit that you love Competence; Admit it!! ADMIT IT!!!(*entirely metaphorically shaking this take of Bruce Wayne by his lapels tho not really cuz he's conservatively the size of a hardwood armoire*)
But seriously: I again point you at disassociation. Batman seems like a really active response to grief, and the way unpretty writes it it physically IS... in the same way that a person who responds to grief by turning to alcohol or sex or thrill-seeking instead of going to the funeral is very actively partaking in those activities. Psychologically though it's actually a passive, avoidant response; a refusal to feel, to face, to deal with that pain. It's not Bruce's fault that he doesn't realize that he enjoys being poetic and eloquent or that he enjoys being GOOD at things(or that he enjoys LOOKING good and FEELING LIKE HE LOOKS GOOD and BEING ADMIRED FOR HIS BEAUTY, for that matter, or that helping someone cook connects him with his Dad) because BRUCE DOES NOT LET HIMSELF EXPERIENCE HIS EMOTIONS DIRECTLY. All of his emotions are exactly like that Horror and Trauma and Grief at the top right after Corinne had been shot: Moderated through performance as a 3rd Person experience of himself. He has no idea what he's feeling, and he hasn't had any idea what he's feeling since the night his parents were killed and he won't LET himself have any idea what he's feeling because to do so would be to MOVE ON and (he thinks)FORGET and ACCEPT THAT THEY REALLY ARE DEAD and he thinks that would be SELFISH!! BRUUUCE! BRUUUUUUCE!!!
UUUGH! Ok, that was actually a tangent and not what I ACTUALLY wanted to talk about here(tho also: EXACTLY what I wanted to talk about here):
"I don't have that," Bruce said. "His sense of taste. I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything as much as he enjoyed good soup."
This sentence is so huge, but you really need a bit more context to understand why. One: even aside from his trauma Bruce has a very detached and clinical way of thinking
The knife moved quickly and looked much fancier than when she did it. "You're really good at that," she said. "You should get your knives sharpened," he said. "Yeah," she agreed, pouring eggy water into her bowl to mix with a spoon. "Do you cook a lot?" "No." There was silence before he clarified. "I dislike the inefficiency." "Oh." "It's necessary to function," he said. "I prefer to spend my time on other things." ... "It isn't a matter of health or moral fortitude," he said carefully. "No more than you not drinking coffee. It isn't particularly admirable to not do things you don't enjoy. I don't enjoy food as much as other people do. That's all."
Two: Karen from HR is part of a wider body of work called Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts(Read It!!!), and in it there is a fic about Bruce's parents, set when Bruce is a child, called Wayne Manor(You know the drill u_u), and in Wayne Manor it's very clear that Bruce is autistic, which the above way of thinking about things is an expression of. His parents are wonderful about this, and there's allot of evidence that Bruce's mother is also autistic and makes such a point about being wonderful about it due to her own abuse for being autistic as a child, and as a child Bruce seems to feel nothing but confidence and happiness in his autistic qualities. But the trauma of the death of his parents has somehow changed that.
I would argue that Bruce ties these autistic qualities, which he associates with his parents because they affirmed and celebrated and shared them, with the way he has responded to their murders, with Batman, which he is deeply conflicted about; something he consciously deems a MORE ethical, active, and "problem-solving" approach to death than mourning, while subconsciously recognizing is deeply fucked up and unhealthy for him and everyone in his life. He's come to attach his clinicality, his "dislike [for] inefficiency", to Batman, and thus as something which sets apart and isolates him; something "lacking" in himself which denies him the joy his father was able to feel. Again: obvsl that's bullshit for the reasons I listed above --his interest in doing things well is THE SAME THING his father felt, is something which his own decision to bring up his father shows connects him to his father IN THAT VERY SCENE and it is his disassociation from his trauma which prevents him from acknowledging and experiencing the joy he finds in doing things well-- but thoughts don't have to be rational for us to believe and hurt ourselves with them. Humans are irrational; human psychology is irrational.
Unpretty understands this so fucking well. She writes Bruce Wayne(and all these characters really) so fucking well. Unpretty's Bruce Wayne is a Deeply Irrational, Hyperrational, Hypercompetent Man. She has turned the power-fantasy of multiple generations of USian men into the Saddest and Wettest of Meow-Meows. This stuff is So Tasty numnumnum I eats it up I EATS IT!! Bruce is such a fucked up dude; his loves and self hatred all wound up and tied together and hiding themselves from him within a trauma Too Huge for him to ever face; "making himself useful" and "solving problems" to everyone and everywhere as an act of ultimate self-annihilation; Heroism as Self Healing as Self Destruction; The Noblest and most Beautiful of Lies; Delicious this Gourmet Fucking Meal she is serving us.
I don't read the comics and I can't call myself a huge fan of the movies, but I SO wish I could see a theatrical take on this character that understood as well as Unpretty does that Batman is a story Bruce Wayne tells himself and that it Isn't Fucking Helping.

So... wrote a fic about John Constantine going into a bar... Yeah... It was Unpretty's fic "Karen from HR" that inspired it. That, plus a dream that had me second-guessing the cause for Karen's troubles. Anyways... I had fun. :)

So............ We're currently halfway up the rather steep and winding Hill™ and fully stopped behind a wreck. The snow is very wet. This car has very little traction. This road is the only good option to get home in bad weather.

Draw the characters from the last fic you read
Tumblr media
The last fic I read was Karen from HR by @unpretty
So I just picked one of the pairs from this and did it
Tumblr media
I kind of wish I'd been able to get the highly sequined look I Was hoping for you know when you've got these dark dapples- I think I forgot I was going to do that, so the pretty sparkily bright blue dress is nice. (I added some leg hairs in places I miss because she's a delightful disaster) Bruce Wayne is hard to draw!

I keep getting called a Karen by a few women at my work and I don’t know what to do, as I am a white woman and the women bullying me are in fact black women, and I’ve not done anything other than just started my new job there and all I can think is that they didn’t like me asking questions about what it’s like there etc. and I didn’t say or do anything that can be considered or said to be racist? One of them said as we were finishing that nobody would side with a white woman over them and they’d spread my name online and end me. I’m seriously depressed about this whole situation as my new job was a move and promotion that I wanted for a long time and now with these women targeting me I don’t know what to do. As who will believe me as it doesn’t seem like these sort of women bullying me are ever going to be stopped doing what they’re doing to innocent women like me that have seriously not done anything wrong as even though I’m a left wing progressive woman I don’t feel that non-minorities are listened to by these sort of faux claims of racism, sexism and bullying /abuse etc.
First, if you haven't already, you need to loop your boss and HR in immediately. Right now. If your boss or HR admin is one of these ladies, go above her. Stick just to the facts about what happened when you report what's happening. If you already have reported it, follow up. Say "The issues I reported to you on XX date are still happening and it's still causing (or now causing) X, Y, Z impact to A, B, C deliverables/results, and they are also now making B and C threats of retaliation. What suggestions do you have to address this?"
Second, lock your social media down tight. Restrict your visibility to friends only. Exclude your accounts/profiles from searches.
Third, document. Document, document, document. Every interaction you have with these ladies. Everything you've said, everything they've said, as verbatim as possible as you can remember. Include dates, times, locations, and witnesses/bystanders. If there's any harassment over messages (emails, texts, Slack, etc.) include screenshots in your write-ups. Do it immediately after every interaction you have with each one of them, whether individually or in groups. Also document every discussion you've had with your boss(es) and/or HR about these ladies/these situations too.
After writing it up, immediately email it to yourself - your work email and your personal email. If you have your own printer, print them out too and keep paper files in a locked drawer the ladies don't have access to or at your home.
This documentation is important because it creates a paper trail. If the ladies escalate, you have documentation proving your role (or lack thereof). If the company fails to protect you, you have documentation describing and showing what they didn't do.
I'm just going to be direct here. We live in a time where white people - white women especially - have to be very careful about what we say and do. It doesn't matter what our allyship is or our politics or what we think is right or how much credibility someone does or doesn't have. So when you make these reports, when you do this documentation, leave all of that out of it. Stick only to the facts, which is "I was in Conference Room 1 with Jane, Lisa, Sue, and Joe on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, for a discussion about X that took place between 1:30pm - 2:15pm. {{Discussion summary}} At approximately 2:15pm when the meeting ended, I said A. Lisa said B, then Joe said C. Our interaction ended at approximately 2:20pm when I returned to my office alone." Leave the feelings out, leave the justification out, leave your perspective out, leave your allyship and your politics out. Stick only to the facts.
If I had to guess about what's happening here, it's probably that one of those ladies applied for your job, didn't get the position, and now she's taking it out on you and enlisted her friends to help.
And if you'd like more help, take a look at Ask A Manager. She's an HR manager who has a ton of experience in managing people and the blog is an amazing resource for any/all kinds of career advice. Here are a bunch of here pages about dealing with bullies and toxic colleagues that you might find helpful as well.

I love that Constantine is kind of like "who have you even been fucking???? Get one single standard" at Corrine. When John is questioning your sex choices you know you need to do some self reflecting.
the real tragedy of karen from hr is that corinne doesn't know these characters and will never know how funny it is to have bruce wayne and john constantine both saying "please make better choices"

The Bad Batch and their jobs (Modern AU)
In my headcanon they all started out as soldiers. After getting out and accidentally acquisiting Omega, they desperately need money and take any jobs they can get. Eventually, everyone finds something they actually like.
Hunter:
Retail sales associate aka Walmart slave and getting yelled at by Karens all day. He's also doing freelance cleaning jobs, the grosser the better the payment. Think hoarder apartments with fifty cats or scat orgy hotel room cleanup.
He works hard on getting his record cleaned up and eventually secures a job at the fire station. He becomes a firefighter and will eventually be a lieutenant and later captain.
Tech:
Fast food worker which means lots of being yelled at by hangry people who are unhappy with the way their BigMac was stacked. He takes any extra shift he can get.
After several failed rounds of applications, he hacks into a big company's system and puts his name on top of the candidate list. He ends up supervisor for some bank insurance IT stuff with lots of numbers.
Wrecker: Miner. It's hard work and long hours in the dark. He actually earns the most of all of them but that's because it's fucking dangerous and depressing.
The leading instructor for the demolition expert trainees blows up. Wrecker, having had professional training in the military and lots of experience at not getting blown up (again), is their best take so he becomes their new instructor for the new hires.
Crosshair: Nobody is really willing to hire him so he's an unlicensed taxi driver most nights. (He hates everything about it.) He also signed up as a freelance roadkill collector job in Hunter's name and takes the calls when he doesn't have passengers.
He meets railroaders when cleaning up railkill one night. When smoking he mentions how much he hates being a taxi driver and the railroaders recruit him for their company. He becomes a traindriver and finally doesn't have to interact with his passengers.
Echo: They call it online sales associate marketer and customer service advisor. He calls it tele-scam-marketer. Many people yelling at him but at least he can work from home.
At a parent-teacher conference of Omega's school he helps another parent with a technology problem. He's like: "I tried to get rid of that problem for hours and you did it within five minutes. You gotta be a master software engineer." and Echo's like "I get payed to get yelled at as a telemarketer". Turns out the guy is an HR associate at an IT company and gets Echo a proper job.

BTW we are basically seeing if we can sue our employer for wrongful termination down the line cause they fucked up and decided to pull a scummy move to save what would be at most $600 when we were already planning on resigning amicably
And like its not a huge deal if it goes through or not and Im not in it for the money or doing it for the money cause idc really since I was planning on resigning anyways and it just means I qualify for unemployment while I'm out of a job which makes up for it
I'm just doing it on principle and out of spite. Spite cause it was a personally scummy move. Principle cause on a political, economic, social level, I really don't like people pulling ableist and capitalist moves that undermines workers rights.
They literally did the worst look, worst play to someone who is going to be put out on medical disability for a month who is a workaholic and needs 40 projects to juggle and was raised by an S Tier Karen in the art of stressing capitalists out.
I got a month of a whole lotta nothing to do for a while and thus a whole lotta time to invest into a passive game of "Im reporting this to HR, The Union, Disability Advocacy Centers, and Low Income Legal Aid groups cause I literally wont have anything better to do and even with it Id still be bored."
Its honestly a really dumb play and I'm going to have fun seeking advice from lawyers and unions and what not to see the full level of which I can either demand compensation or just give them a hard time
And at the very least, make sure that HR knows about the toxic environment and gets on their ass to fix it cause I do feel bad that I left the one person who really supported me down there with one ally and three people I know talk shit about her constantly
Dear Boss,
You fucked up and fuck you in a professional legal manner.
Sincerely,
Worker and Disabled People's Rights
((Btw we actually took a chemistry professors job in our undergrad cause he was an ableist dickhead so its not our first rodeo complaining professionally to a californian university about injust behaviors and actions among their faculty and staff. That is still THE highlight of my undergraduate experience.)
Anyways, the XIV part of our brain whose whole function as a part is to shake shit up and destroy things that he sees as corrupt is so excited to have a project to do while we recover along side my TTRPG and Art stuff.

This is going to piss off a very specific group of F1 female fans and a specific group of Redbull F1 fans (and frankly I couldn’t give any less of a fuck even if I tried).
I am literally appalled at some of your reactions towards the whole Christian Horner/Female employee bullshit. We have not seen a single thing from the case (I mean the other team principals have spoken about transparency), and yet your first reaction was “she is probably mad because he didn’t want to sleep with her for a promotion” or “she is definitely guilty here, he wouldn’t do that”.
Now everyone who has been here long enough will know I am not a fan, but have y’all forgotten he literally cheated on his ex wife, while she was pregnant, to be with Geri?
And the “he wouldn’t do that” crew, here is a little reminder that we never know what people are capable of…
youtube
But honestly, at what point are we going to start believing women? What do we have to do that we haven’t already done? We have marched and protested and worn black and screamed it from the rooftops and boycotted things and what do the small group of specific women do who support F1? Agree that a rich white man couldn’t possible have done such things.
We literally know nothing about this woman. She didn’t post it online, she privately made a case, she didn’t contact the press. We don’t know what she looks like or what department she worked in (she has been suspended from her job at RB). She didn’t do it for attention or money, she reported inappropriate behaviour by a superior in the company.
This is why they don’t believe us, this is why we stay silent. When women can’t even support women and immediately go support that dickhead of a man, just because “he wouldn’t… he is married, with children”.
Un-fucking-believable….
I’m so disappointed. And for the Karens, please make sure to read “specific group”. I never mentioned “all” because I know it’s not all…
Until RB makes it clear and is transparent about the case, CH, RB, their HR and PR responsible for this particular case can go burn in hell….
Rant over…

So I read through the post about what whiteness is and I had some thoughts. I’m white, and raised in a very very white traditionally conservative community. I was very sheltered, and when I was a young teenager and just starting to gain access to different ideas, and the ability to creat my own opinions on the world, I had a really hard time separating ‘white idealism’ I guess you could say, from the process of deconstructing my worldview. I felt like I had to prove somehow that I was better now, or that I had changed, even though I was trying to distance myself from that exact mindset.
It was also a shock because I found out quickly that as soon as you don’t fit into the neat boxes that of whiteness (i’m queer for example) they don’t want you anymore. whiteness can’t be allowed to be tarnished by anything that could be perceived as lower than it. and so even when I was starting to change my ideas, I still clung to the mindset that I had to be showing other people that I was good for them to accept me if that makes sense, and I think that shows itself in a lot of white leftist spaces as well from what I’ve seen. The need to prove to others that you’re good or better. Which just circles back to the same ideas they’re trying to distance themselves from. in order to really get out of the cycle that needs to be let go.
idk, hope that made sense.
It absolutely does and I absolutely agree. I think this is partially why progressive policies and movements have been so slow to be won. Most policies and movements are either spearheaded by or overtaken by white voices who's priority isn't in actually dismantling or addressing issues and that's reflected in the hollow policies they pass that never do much more than band aid any given situation.
Best and most recent example is the call for police to be abolished going to > police should be defunded > police reform is the best and more realistic goal because that's the compromise most will accept so it's Right > actually I think you should fund police again
(And of course passing Roe v Wade but not codifying for 50 years)
Also, and I'm just tacking this on: I blame this attitude for the current panopticon/cancel era we're living in as well, where people feel obligated to share personal truths to justify the things they say online. The need to Perform being a good person with apology videos, profile photo filters, and BLM in your bio instead of just actionably being a good person. Where people follow each other just waiting for the other to say/share something problematic just so they can have the satisfaction of calling out a Bad Person™
It's giving work write ups. It's giving Karen in HR calling a meeting because you broke policy.
Whiteness is a culture and we all live in a world colonized by it and so we must be aware of these things. And if we really wanna stop shit like that, we have to admit where it comes from.
Kill the Karen standing next to the cop in your head (so to speak).
