Creator Spotlight: @chaaistheanswer

Hi everyone! I am Clara, but you can also call me chaa! I am a digital artist based in Auckland, New Zealand, with a bachelor’s degree in Creative Media Production. After graduating from uni, I moved out to pursue my art career and I’ve been a freelance digital artist ever since. I love concept art, especially character design! Creating characters influenced by my love for fantasy is what I live for. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you enjoyed my art! And thank you, Tumblr, for this opportunity!

Did you originally have a background in art? If not, how did you start?

I specialized in art in high school and have a bachelor’s degree in Creative Media Production from Massey University with an animation pathway. For our thesis film, which I worked on with several of my classmates, I took on the role of producer, art director, and concept artist. Our short film was featured in the Wellington Film Festival Terror-Fi in 2020. After graduating, I went on to become a freelance artist, but my goal is to work for the gaming industry as a character concept artist. Ever since I first picked up a pencil, I knew I wanted to become an artist!

Have you ever had an art block? If so, how did you overcome it?

Art block is quite common among artists, and unfortunately, I too have fallen prey to the affliction. I have several ways of overcoming art block: watching movies, playing games, reading, or going out for a drive with my sister. These are just a few things I love to do to help keep my creative juices flowing!

What is one habit you find yourself doing a lot as an artist?

I tend to obsessively research about completely unrelated topics while I draw. I find learning new things helps improve my concept designs, especially in creating backgrounds for my characters.

Over the years as an artist, what were your biggest inspirations behind your creativity?

Video games and anime were my biggest inspirations! Anything with a captivating story that’ll send me to the edge of my seat, and loveable characters. I’m particularly drawn to high and dark fantasy.

How has technology changed the way you approach your work?

Technology has made a huge impact on us artists over the last few years. I used to draw a lot on paper, but since getting a tablet, I find myself searching for the undo and redo buttons and even trying to zoom constantly while I draw on paper. I used to only draw for myself as well, but after posting my art online, I now have an audience to whom I can share my art. Because of this, I am able to earn a living doing what I love by creating illustrations for clients.

What is a recent creative project that you are proud of?

I am very proud of this recent commission I’ve done for a client! Fortunately, the piece turned out exactly how I wanted it to look, and my client was very happy with the result. I am also in the process of working on a Webtoon, which is going as smoothly as I hoped it would be before its re-release!

What advice would you give to younger you about making art that's personal or truthful to your own experiences?

The best advice I would give my younger self is to never hold back! Try not to think about the negatives of creating and sharing art that you believe in. Embrace vulnerability, and don’t be afraid to dig deep into your own emotions and experiences. Always explore, and don’t limit yourself to your own bubble. And most important of all, stay true to yourself! Stay true to your values and beliefs, and never compromise your own authenticity for the sake of pleasing others. Your art is a reflection of you as a person.

Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?

@yuumei-art has been an inspiration to me since my early Deviantart days. I admire how she uses her skills to focus on environmentalism and cyber activism. @nipuni is another inspiration of mine. I found her when I was in the process of recovering from Dragon Age Solavellan hell. I admire how she manages to capture faces well while also sticking to her style. Her paintings are so beautiful and very pleasing to my eyes!

It’s your final year of highschool, and your only goal is to graduate top of your cohort, as usual. Except as student council president, your advisor can’t seem to leave you alone. What happens when you take Decelis Academy’s top student, their star taekwondo athlete and put them in front of a camera?

“Kindred” a student documentary. Pilot episode airing tonight on TVN 7PM KST.

as a super talkative person, a lot of my video diary entries are just me yapping about whatever flies into my mind. sometimes i'll jot down a couple things i wanna talk about (like my own personal podcast 🎀) but most of the time i just do it freely and its lots of fun to see how my mind wanders sometimes

2023.

i hope any of you reading this will forgive the essay. i started posting to this art blog ten years ago in 2013 when i was just at the very end of high school, uploading short animations i'd made for one of my final projects, preparing myself for art school where i was gearing up to become an illustration/animation student.

i went into my art foundation course in 2014, still thinking i was going to be going into storybook illustration or with faint hopes of becoming like a concept artist for game/animation, although even then i'd started thinking about patterns...

and then in 2015 i did go into my BA, going in for that illustration with animation degree that... usually when i talk about it in real life, i say didn't really feel like the best place for me. if i think back, the best things i got out of it were two of my best friends, one of whom is now my partner. looking back on my BA era, there's some bits of sketchbook stuff...

and while i was at university my main fandoms were thunderbirds are go and x-men for a bit... these are from the end of 2015 into the beginning of 2016...

then for a little while i was doing this still sort of pastel-ish lineless situation:

and i alternated between that and this thin fineliner type work (pretty sure all of the linearted pieces were done on paper and scanned, and all the lineless were graphics-tablet-only) - it was in this style that i started to offer commissions for the first time too.

and i also had fineliner-lined work in sketchbooks that i coloured with marker and posca pens, the colours of which were generally a bit more intense just based on not being able to slide the hue/saturation around on paper:

also 2016 was when i discovered the spongebob musical just after it's trial run in chicago (which ended in july of 2016) and i started making fanart at that point... which would have the biggest effect on the way i drew (and i did end up handing in a piece of spongebob musical fanart as one of my art school homeworks lmao)

from summer 2016 until early 2017 things were still quite soft and pastelly in my digital art, colour-wise:

and then suddenly everything got whacked up to 100% on saturation. also i was using the binary tool to give everything really thin pixel lineart for some reason.

then i went on vacation in summer 2017 and didn't draw for maybe a month? just short of? and when i came back i decided to change everything up again... giving characters blobbier, more ugly-cute faces with large squinting eyes and big nostrils and i was worrying a lot less about making anything look smooth, lineart-wise. i turned off the pen stabiliser in SAI and let it wiggle.

then... the spongebob musical opened on broadway in late 2017, i went to see it live in person for the first time... and my whole brain was ENTIRELY consumed by my love of it. i was putting that david zinn inspired pattern explosion into everything, even if it wasn't sbm fanart.

as we go into 2018, i started colouring my lineart. my biggest interest was still broadway musicals (with spongebob at the top of the list)

i think summer 2017 - early 2018 is probably my favourite art era, i was at my most bright and colourful and exciting... although i know in my actual real life i was struggling a lot with my home situation and i had been for some time. art was definitely my escapism back then, and i think a lot of the time i drew really bright, joyful stuff to try and inject that feeling into myself.

as for my university work, i was putting my focus into 3D paper-mache puppets:

and i was also starting to do more repeat patterns, mostly inspired by things around me. i'd learned how to make patterns actually tile and repeat in 2017, so made a few during my time at uni just to accompany some of my projects, but never as the focus of them. one of my university tutors told me that maybe i should put more focus on doing surface pattern, and maybe applying it to textiles, but i said i wasn't interested.

i graduated from my BA in the summer of 2018, and immediately began volunteering at the whitworth art gallery doing anything i could - stewarding, helping with arts and crafts, dancing with families...

in 2019 i was still very colourful... i was trying out more chunky colouring on characters skintones that i think was def inspired by tumblr artist jadenvargen:

but the blobbyness and ugly-cute style of drawing faces was gone by here, and i think... the way i drew characters probably had better *anatomy*, proportions were maybe a bit more realistic...

in 2020 i started adding the black shading to under the chins and some other places on characters' bodies because i started watching the anime my hero academia with my brother, lmao (and i was starting to pastelise colours a bit again, these are the most pastel-ish examples) my lineart has really smoothed back out too, though i never turned my pen stabiliser back on in SAI. i think my hand just adjusted. probably seems a bit insane to miss that, but i do.

by the end of 2020, the almost-year of lockdown over cobid had... made me a bit insane, i think, and i moved out of my mother's house and into a flat with a friend from university.

in 2021 i think things were much the same... i think from this point on is where things have sort of settled. i don't want to say stagnated, but i do think things have been very... like this for a while.

2022 - got the most exciting examples out...

also i was very into these little frames in 2022.

and then on to 2023! in 2022, i did begin trying to shift gears a bit -- hoping to put more energy into sewing and making products (like my tutor has suggested back in uni, even though i'd really resisted the idea.) i sold at a few in-person markets during winter of 2022, but got disheartened by the amount of money i had to sink in up front to sign up for a spot...

which has made me VERY grateful for the people who have supported me via online sales. it has really helped me stay afloat in 2023 - AND it has felt more wonderful than i can describe that there have been people interested in my work... especially when a lot of it has been my original designs, rather than the fanart that i expect a lot of people initially followed me for.

i've also... in the past 2 years... branched out a bit more when it comes to 'being an artist' - and have had the opportunity to deliver arts & crafts workshops with local refugee & asylum seeker support charity, afrocats. it's taken me to their home base in a church to hotels across the city where asylum seekers were temporarily placed while waiting on their new homes, and of course to my beloved whitworth art gallery, where we welcomed visitors from all backgrounds: from the typical white middle class visitors the gallery usually expects, to all the refugee visitors coming into the space for the first time.

and through my volunteering at the whitworth, i showed up so often they decided they might as well pay me. so i've also become a facilitator of... creative play sessions, my favourites of which have been outdoors. monthly, year-round, we have 'outdoor art club', where i get to paint with mud and make potions from leaves with kids & families - here you can see me tell you a little bit about it in this video below with 'crempog' a puppet character that makes videos about activities for kids and families around manchester (my bit starts at 01:10 although i am in the intro and thumbnail haha)

and then of course the summer 'PLAYTIME' activities we've had the past two years: scrap studio in 2022, and play market in 2023. it's the best freelance gig ever -- just to hang out and encourage families to be creative and have fun.

in working more in these new avenues... outside of being - as i've called myself for a long time - "an internet artist"... i've found myself more interested in this sort of thing. in being a "real world artist" too. in doing surface pattern design, and being a workshop facilitator, i find myself wanting to put more energy into these sorts of projects.

in 2023 i've also dabbled a little bit more in youtube videos! i have had a channel for a while and have made videos in previous years, but 2023 has been the year i've done the most in. admittedly most of them haven't been about my art, and more just like... random things that interest me (the spongebob musical in particular) but i've really been enjoying video editing. that's kind of an art form too, so i'm including it here!

moving forward, want to keep putting even more of my energy into other things. my shop, with a bigger range of products to offer. workshops in real life, where i can make a difference.

as for my art blog... i feel like i've done the least drawing in many years in 2023, and... well, things have been weird and complicated for a bit in my real life. i hope to draw for fun a bit more again very soon, and to return to doing things in more of a wild and crazy way, to be more creative and exciting with the way i draw things. still, here's some of my favourites from 2023:

can i ask advice ;; drawing wise ? how did you start to anatomy but also w stylization? did you bruteforce by studying every bone muscle etc in art school?

hmm...

First, you must distinguish between two completely different concepts: gesture and anatomy. The stylization and dynamic you often see me doing with my dancing practice is "Gesture". This is an excellent tutorial by Proko about gestures. I practiced gestures very soon when I started drawing, simply because I wanted to draw dynamically, lucky for me it was the right thing to do. This was the main reason why I'm so fast at sketching.

This is my gesture practice, 1 min, 2 min, and 5 min sketch. It's about the flow of the body and which direction each part is going, use "sharp and coherent lines". I practice until it becomes a "natural reflex", a habit when I look at people's interactions.

This below is something I drew 3 years ago (my anatomy was not good sorry), notice how I use many many coherent lines? At the thigh, shin, arm stretching,... all the bigger areas? That's the remaining of gestures.

It goes without saying. Try to find the flow of gestures, even for the hair or clothes. Heh, I drew this 4 years ago, how nostalgic.

You can see how I just create the flow with Lya's hair and body movement in the dancing pics too. Like with Kylar's pic her body is straight up one quite hard mass from head to toe. You know she's leaning forward, seemingly wanting to abandon Kylar with a "pathetic loser like you? With me?" attitude (ouchie sorry Kylar nation). While in Sydney's pic she seems much more relaxed and enjoys how her body parts seem to loosen and more in sync with Sydney's movements. Her hip and legs sway more, and her hair also sways back at Sydney's body, hinting that her moves are relatively close to his body. I don't think I have enough vocabulary to describe, gestures are always just "feelings" to me. If people see what I want to show, that's the success for me.

I know many self-learners started by finding random tutorials that have muscle breakdown or box-like proportions to try and mimic. Mimic is good, drawing is mimicking and remembering what you saw, but without good gesture practice, many people tend to make anatomy very stiff.

Then, you start to apply anatomy to the gestures you've practiced. One way to do it is by learning about muscle position first, and then trying to apply it to a figure, or a model. This is my homework and it's HORRIBLY WRONG IN MANY WAYS. My teacher fixed it for me but I don't have the after with me right now, so take this as an example of how to do the apply thing, DO NOT USE IT AS MUSCLE REF it's very wrong.

In my opinion bone structure is not strictly needed like muscles. Bones are for muscles to hang onto. You only need to remember some important "landmarks" like the collarbone, elbow joint, anterior pelvis, knee, and ankle,… to hang the important muscles to it. After you're familiar with muscles and gestures, you can start to stylize. Applying your knowledge to animated characters with cartoonish design is one great way. THESE HOMEWORKS OF MINE ARE STILL WRONG but ye hope you get the idea. I'm still struggling with anatomy.

One of my all-time fav are AFK ARENA artists and what they do for the game. Aki as the main artist, Kuri Huang, and another artist I suddenly forgor the name as home screen illust. I recommend researching their works if you want a direction on how to stylize your character with great dynamic gestures and shapes.

And

As much as I hate to say this, I was particularly considered a failure, a stone-head, who couldn't be changed for the better when I was still in art school - uni. My chosen major was digital graphic design, not specified in drawing but in designing, that's one thing I regret. I traded 5 years of my youth for doing the things I don't want to do. That's why the moment I graduated, I immediately went and signed up for an advanced art class specified in drawing. I'd be lying if I said the uni didn't teach me anything about drawing. They did, but almost everything I learned during 5 years of uni was self-learning from outer sources. I encourage self-learning the most when I talk with younger artists. Proko is a very trusted source to learn from, go to their YouTube channel, and you might figure out something too.

Through Your Eyes part 1

POV:you’re beomgyu’s bestie majoring in photography and video editing

a/n: saw this on tiktok, and thought i would write something because please this man has my whole heart(and i love creating fake scenarios in my head)😩also halfway through the story i realized i didn’t hear the cover with eng subtitles, and omg the story im writing really fits the concept ahh!! Enjoy!

You and Beomgyu go way back to elementary school.

You were the new student in town and you transferred in the middle of the year. At this rate, you thought that it would be kinda difficult to make any friends because, during introductions, you found that the gazes of your new classmates weren’t that friendly.

Luckily, when you were assigned your seat, you were placed right beside the class president(everyone was fighting to be placed beside him so the teacher had to assign him to sit alone.)

As you were walking towards your assigned seat, you realized that he had really cute features and a kind face, and you thought to yourself:

“Please just let me make one friend and I’ll be able to make it through elementary.”

Before you sat down, you were thinking of ways on how to start a conversation with your new seat partner as you usually keep to yourself and aren’t good at making the first move.

But it was like Beomgyu had read your mind. Once you were seated, you felt his figure turn towards you reaching out for a handshake.

“Hi I’m Beomgyu”

“Hi Beomgyu, I’m Y/N.”

“Let’s be friends,” he said.

“I would like that very much” I replied.

So with that said, Beomgyu kept to his word and you guys were the best of friends. Even though throughout elementary school, whenever there were changes in classes, without fail, Gyu will always make sure to have lunch with you during your breaks. And you guys will always wait for each other at the school entrance to walk back home together.

You guys graduated elementary school and managed to get into the same high school, Hanlim Arts High School.

For the first year you were there, honestly, you were pretty clueless about what you wanted to pursue in life. However Gyu, already knew that he wanted to pursue music and dance. So whenever he had time he would go and work on himself, and he would invite you to watch him perform. You could say that you were his first fan.

The way he sang and danced, really evoked emotions that you have never felt before. It felt like the performance was doing the storytelling itself.

During one of his practices, you decided to record his performance. The way he moves, and his facial expressions when he dances, you wanted to capture everything. You wanted others to see Gyu through your lenses. And that’s when you realized what you wanted to pursue.

Videography.

You told Gyu about your newfound passion and he couldn’t help but blush because you managed to find something you were interested in because of him. And he liked the idea.

The time came for you guys to choose your major and naturally, you both weren’t in the same class. But that doesn’t put a stop to your friendship.

Any opportunity given, Gyu will always invite you to come watch him practice and he would ask you to record his performance even before you ask him for permission.

As you frequently visited Gyu to watch his practices, you didn’t realize that he had matured into this beautiful man compared to the first time you met him.

He was this cute boy with a friendly face but now he had changed into someone who captured the hearts of anyone no matter where he walked.

I guess you could say that you felt love for him only in a platonic way. But that changed when your classmates started to ask whether anything was going on between you and Gyu. Because you would always disappear once classes end and they never got to hang out with you.

You thought to yourself, why now? When all this time during year 2, no one bothered where you went after classes. The thought lingered in your mind as you made your way to Gyu’s practice session.

As you were recording Gyu's practice, you couldn’t help but think of why your classmates said what they said. Are you and Gyu, dating? That would be like dating my brother you thought to yourself.

While you were having these thoughts to yourself, you’ve never realized it but Gyu was always keeping his eyes on you as he performed(through the mirror reflection). One shift in your mood and he would drop everything.

And seeing you not focusing on him when he was practicing, kinda made him worry because you were always focused when he was practicing in front of you.

So even though the music stopped (which you did not notice because you were so lost in your train of thought) Gyu had already walked up to you, squatted down, and placed his face directly in front of you, leaving a little gap between you two.

When you were finally out of your trance, you shifted back as the proximity of his face with yours startled you.

He was confused as to why you did that but he just brushed it off and asked what you were thinking about that you didn’t even notice that he had stopped practicing.

You didn’t want to say the real reason but best friends don’t keep secrets from each other right? So you decided to tell him the truth about what your friends said, asking whether you guys were dating.

When Gyu heard that, he could feel his ears starting to get hot and he saw himself getting red in the mirror. So he tries to hide it with his hands by faking a cough so you wouldn’t catch on.

“I mean us dating? That would be weird” you said.

Gyu just laughs and says “Yeah so weird. Why would anyone think that?”

But deep down he knows why your classmates had asked you whether you guys were dating.

You’ve never noticed it as your seat was near the windows where you could see your school courtyard, however, there were times that Gyu would take the long way back to his class just so that he could see you (on days when he didn’t have practice). He would tell your classmates not to call for you whenever he came so that he could just admire you from afar. Because even though he knows his feelings for you existed, he didn’t want to act on them and ruin the friendship as he didn’t know whether you liked him back.

2 times a week turned to 3,4 sometimes he would pass by your class every day just that you wouldn’t notice. Just a glimpse of you and that could turn his whole day around. And that was why your classmates asked you whether you guys were dating, but you still did not have a clue about it.

Days, weeks, and months passed and you guys were finally off to college. Gyu’s classes involved composition writing, recording for music, and acting. And for you, you decided to continue in videography and video editing.

One of his assignments he had to complete was to shoot a music video while also recording the vocals of a new/cover song. So of course he went to the best person for this assignment. You! His amazing best friend who majors in videography.

Of course you accept, because now that you guys are in college, you guys don’t get to hang out as much anymore.

Gyu decided on a Japanese song and he told you the ideas of what he wanted to appear in the cover music video.

During one of the shots, he suggested doing a wide shot with him standing in the middle while looking at the camera. However, you suggested doing a tighter shot of him.

You gave him the instruction to show love and yearning. You told him to imagine that the camera is someone that he loves and he did just that, even better than you imagined.

While you were recording the shot, it felt like his eyes were on you the entire time. That whatever he was conveying through his eyes was all for you. It felt so genuine and innocent that honestly in that moment, you realized that you had denied your feelings for him. However, you didn’t want to expect anything and just told him what a great shot that was and his acting skills were fantastic.

Little did you know that he didn’t even need to pretend to show love and yearning. Because the person he had feelings for was right in front of him.

i keep going back and forth on carlo's death.

i know i was adamant before, on him dying from the petrification disease. i think logically he would have to have had it because of ergo.

but here's another weird point about his death,

i just realized why we intrinsically think he was killed.

Carlo is wearing his school uniform when his stalker finds him, and on the floor at that. That's quite odd. Maybe not being on the floor, but the uniform. Why the uniform?

"He didn't even come to your graduation?"

For the son of an aristocratic family, would this be the image of a deathly ill son in care? Did Geppetto know? Wouldn't he be in palliative care, as Lady Antonia could afford?

Why wear the uniform after graduating?

"Oh, she's here! Grab her!"

"...Gemini, get rid of them! I'm off!"

Was his death literally right after his graduation, on the same day?

And also, Gemini is a little lamp guy. (She doesn't look to be carrying the lamp.) Why does she tell him to take care of the boys? What can he even do? Tell them off?

Here's another funny thing... We NEVER see Carlo outside of his school uniform. (at least, in the "past", "real" Carlo time line).

And as we know, the school uniform has a prominent Sailor collar, the type that is associated with nautical outfits [down to the three stripes, supposedly called a "naval collar"]. The Graduation pendant that he gives to Romeo is of an anchor. [I know that these are all artifacts of the charity house. but they are nonetheless associated in tangent with Carlo]

When we find Carlo's painting, it's right next to this one of a ship. [also, two bottles on the counter, perhaps representing the "two lives" of Carlo and Pino]

also... when Carlo's memories materialize... it's in the sand. Only on the seaside.

Remember, Romeo seems to be associated with a fire element, and Pino with water, the same seems to go with Carlo. The original novel of Pinocchio itself seems to have a strange fixation on the ocean.

And now, might I present to you:

The DLC images are also of a ship and some kind of water turbine.

Director Choi (in pre-release interview): "I'll put it this way: there are more stories I want to tell in Lies of P, so I hope [it] does well."

Also: "There sure are stories we could not introduce in the game" (talking about the story being adapted into another form)

[basically, that there was more to the story than what was really present in the final game.] I'll leave all this to your consideration without adding my own just yet. (I'll add it in a reblog on my own blog without tagging it) Just kidding I want to keep wasting everyone's time

Perhaps after the events of the game,

This is some sort of effort by Pino to either learn more about the deceased Carlo or try to remember his "previous life" as Carlo, by taking to the sea.

Maybe even after the game, Pino will STILL attempt to "awaken" as him so to speak [:(].

Again, Carlo is strongly associated with nautical elements. Again, he is never seen outside of a sailor suit, basically. Also, when we gain the memories of Carlo, they materialize on the sand, at the seaside. Remember, he DIED in the sailor outfit

Maybe we are to take the "sand memories" more "literally" as they are in the sand?

Did Carlo drown and his body wash ashore, which is why these memories materialize in the sand? Why is he so associated with ships?

Pino is also depicted in the water, remember, including what looks to be concept art that was used for the OST? Maybe it isn't "just" a motif? [even simple things like his "official" coat and his eyes being blue, blue blood's tailcoat, and him being associated with the colour blue in general]

Which is why Pino is pictured in the water, since he was "born" from Carlo's death... He was birthed in the water the same way Carlo died in it?

Why DO we need to invest more in STEM (assuming you're talking about education, like most people saying that phrase these days, otherwise that need is self-evident)? Do we want the next leaps forward being undertaken by people who were pushed & prodded or coddled into the fields? "Hidden Figures" turned me against STEM programs. I want a Katherine Johnson who had to FIGHT for her STEM skills sending us to Mars not those twit kids in the ads showing us how virtuous the investing companies are.

I'd rather have the next Katherine Johnson be free to pursue her interest in mathematics.

I don't think forcing people into STEM is the only way to "invest more." Education at an early age (and parental involvement) can nourish a lifelong love of the sciences, just as it can nourish interest in the arts or sports. One of the reasons I'm so hard on the teaching of science (and history) is that we teach them in the worst ways - rote memorization of theorems and concepts. You want people to love science, have experiments in elementary school where you set something on fire.

Also, from a practical perspective, we will need good STEM graduates. The US will need people to run the fabs. Chips are one of the dimensions of Cold War 2.0, and the US will need to ensure domestic capacity to help maintain their quality. Invention and innovation can help spur economic development and improve quality of life - that makes everyone's lives better off.

What are some of your favorite pieces of art/ art that has made you think a lot?

this is such a cheesy cop-out answer, but there's a lot of things that im going to struggle remembering because of 1. how situational the experience was (as in, the context in which i experienced the piece) 2. how wide the word "art piece" is. 3. the great fortune to have been born to parents with strong artistic sensibilities and a love of travel/education. so these are like. really weird and specific but maybe thats the way it should be:

let's start with the most overly dramatic: st. paul's cathedral in london has guided tours where they take you into rooms and let you mill around before moving to the next one. my family took a trip overseas as a really, really big special vacation to celebrate my sister and i graduating from high school (we're not twins, we just combo'd it after she graduated) that i was too brain-broken and teenage to fully appreciate. its a beautiful cathedral but i was in my edgy internet atheist stage and refused to be impressed by it until i stood over a grate in the floor. through the grates you can see the crypt that you visit next. but standing over the grate, someone below started to sing something hymnal and very catholic. and i realized i was the only one who could hear it because of the crowd chatter. and it made me feel, in the moment, so special and so lonely in a way that i still think about, a lot. it was for me only. divine providence.

a date with adam to a place i had no idea existed but he had been to before: the bad art museum, which is split over like 3 different buildings in a bizarre way. we only went to the one where you have to buy a ticket to a movie as entry and it was some truly lovely bad art and made me sad how inaccessible it was but resolute about my love of the nuances of uncelebrated anti-art masterpieces. then we watched "assassination nation" and it was fucking terrible. great date.

reading the theory regarding the "venus of willendorf" being a self portrait as a 20-something year old and running into the bathroom to take my clothes off and look down at myself and having my mind blown. not just by how much i instantly understood it, but because of the tugging feeling on my heart when i feel that strand of history connecting women artists driven by that unknown compulsion to create for creations sake!

similarly, seeing artemisia gentileschi's work next to her fathers and realizing how much she outclassed him in every single way and feeling the tugging feeling again, but this time with a dark woe of realization of how history minimizes achievement and talent when it eases a narrative

reading jane erye's descriptions of herself and her approaches to her plights and for the first time feeling like someone had walked a path that i currently found myself lost on.

reading 1984 as a middle schooler and becoming so angry at the ending i threw the book across the room (something i had never done before and never did again in my life) and stormed out of my room to complain to my mom lol. IT REALLY UPSET ME!!!

reading les miserables for the first time and weeping piteously for days after the ending and having it impact my brain so hard it re-wired how i think about the concept of "legacy" and what it means to matter in the world and how love is nothing without the courage to stand up for it. and that mercy should, and will, always supersede unwavering justice (hard lesson to remember, maybe im due for a re-read)

sneaking into my parents room to read the books i wasnt supposed to yet as a really little kid lol. my mom used to get "dykes to watch out for" in a newsletter she was subscribed to! but i didnt read those bc they were dumb relationship comics for grown-ups. i wanted to read about opus the penguin and lee iacocca, as if i knew who that was. my mother's comic collection was the single most influential constant in my life. knowing that i was exposed to bill watterson's commentary about his own work via the big collections my mom owned probably explains a lot about what's wrong with me. but she also had a lot of berke breathed before he fully wussed out

the general experience of playing a video game that you arent supposed to/when you arent supposed to is probably one of the most freeing means of meaningless rebellion as a kid that everyone should experience. i used to be up playing pokemon past my bedtime under my covers with a huge heavy rubber flashlight i stole from the kitchen and had to replace every morning without getting caught once i was done with it. god, the days before backlit screens we had to get really fucking wild with it. in high school i would wake up at 5:00am, sneak into the computer room where the ps2 was and play an hour of FFX bc its the longest fucking non-persona game in the world, stop playing before my mom woke up at 6:00am and sneak back into bed. if i hit a part where i couldnt save i would just turn the screen off and come back to it tomorrow lol. secrets......

reading the "pictures for sad children" arc about paul, who is a ghost, finally losing it and going on a rant about how it has never mattered how thin a computer screen is. they were right and reading it helped me articulate and understand a growing feeling of restless frustration at the world around me that i felt singular and alone in. im glad that last i heard that artist is doing ok. i hope they recognize the incredible value in their work as imperfect as they perceived it to be. i do not think they would be happy to know that their old work was impactful, but i hope they realize that what people are able to tease out of their work is meaningful, at least to me it is. ill transcribe the comic rather than repost it i think: paul [while smashing electronics]: "have i told you about [bam] how nerds destroy the world take conspicuous consumption as a lifestyle choice and combine it with early hardware adoption and you have great swaths of gadgetry out of stock because they're incrementally better than the last model and there are landfills full of functioning electronics wasted time, resources, money, etc. the best part is that these things were never necessary it has never mattered how thing a computer is." [smash]

What's wrong with characters' ages.

Something I still don't fully understand.

Probably spoilers?

We remember that the characters are about 21-22 years old.

Since the series literally starts almost on Cheng Xiaoshi's birthday, I'm not entirely sure is he still 21, or already 22. Lu Guang is a separate problem, we won’t talk about that now.

We've known since season 1 that Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi met during they high school day. From the storyboards we know that Lu Guang was 16 years old (十六嵗) at that time.

Considering 12 years of education, they must have been around 17-18 by the time they graduated from high school and went to university.

They all entered the same university together for a bachelor's degree. Again, the undergraduate/bachelor degree lasts 4 years. Technically, they should be arout 21-22 years old. But!

They must have been 21-22 years old when they graduated from university, when the trio decided to run a photo studio while their friends, Xu Shanshan and Dong Yi, continued their education. And the s1 itself is the time when they graduated with master's degree. I hope it's obvious where I'm going with this.

So? It was said literally in the series itself. Another two years should have passed since Lu Guang, Qiao Ling and Cheng Xiaoshi graduated from the university - and in fact they should be older, like already about 24-25 years old, which does not correspond to the character concepts/intros at all. This still raises questions for me.

I know that there are errors in the ages of the supporting characters, given that the art book was recently released and the information on the concepts is different. But about this case - Xu Shanshan's age matches that of the trio, she is 22 years old, while Dong Yi is... Actually 25 🤔

I'm still not sure if this is a mistake, or if the age of their intros/concepts are actually misleading and refers to either a different period or different versions of the characters.

Which might be the case, since their intros (even before s1) don't quite match how we see the characters in actual donghua.

Completely different design for Cheng Xiaoshi', not like in s1 (don't forget about the ring he only got in s2). And he looks so depressing that something is definitely wrong with it.

Usually character intros give a basic and literal idea of them, while the image that the intros create is somewhat at odds with how we see them in s1 - considering that moments in s1 are depicted using photographic film, this is done on purpose, in my opinion.

One of my first drawings on Deviant Art and a fanfiction was of the Loonatics who were trapped in the past in the era of the Tiny Toons (series from the 90s), with the reboot of the Tiny Toons series: Looniversity there is also a reboot of that fic, I don't think I'll write it but this is the concept.

One day out of nowhere, the Loonatics are seen as invaders by the inhabitants of planet Blanc, even Zodavia does not recognize them and they try to kill them, they quickly escape to Acmetropolis only to discover that something is happening on the planet, the place is being destroyed and The inhabitants are turning into monsters or disappearing, including their families, they receive a call from Dr. Fidel Chroniker who informs them that time has been affected in some way, the planet's past is changing and consequently the future is changing.

Going to the Dr.'s laboratory, he informs them that he discovered that someone traveled to the past and is changing it, causing catastrophes that affect his present, the only thing he was able to detect was that it began on the day of the Graduation of the Generation of 23-27 of the Acme University

The original idea was to go back in time to graduation day to stop whoever was doing this, unfortunately the change in time affected the machine just as the Loonatics crossed and arrived at the first day of school for generation 23-27 so that for the next 4 years they will have to take on staff work within the Looniversity to discover what has happened while at the same time living with the students and their ancestors without attracting attention

Hi Devon,

I'm a recent grad planning to apply to psych PhD programs in the fall with the plan to pursue a career academia (despite how much I know it'll suck I've thought long and hard about it and truly don't think I would be as fulfilled doing anything else). My research experience has been in cognitive development and I keep on being drawn to questions about autism. I am Autistic myself and pretty much think the way we have historically thought about cognitive abilities in autism is garbage. I want to pursue my questions but am honestly terrified about trying to fight my way through the current status quo in autism research.

You're one of very few people I know of in the realm of academia with views on autism that I actually agree with and respect, so I would love your thoughts. Is there hope for actually Autistic individuals pursuing research into autism? Are there any researchers who you've seen building community with Autistic people and listening to Autistic voices? Do you have any advice for surviving in the field as an Autistic person?

Anything you can say to these questions would be much appreciated, thank you!

I'm the type to be brutally honest rather than uplifting and encouraging, so you know, take that into account when adjusting for the skew of my answers.

Any time a person reaches out to me seeking advice on pursuing a graduate degree in psychology of any kind, I advise them against it for the most part. The field desperately needs more research conducted by Autistic people, for Autistic people (and other neurodivergent groups) but I have never known a graduate program to be anything but extremely abusive, exploitative, ableist, and ill-suited to preparing a graduate student today for the reality of academic life as it now is. These mfers are playing by a rulebook that was tired in the 1980s and its downright detached from reality today. My graduate experience was so traumatic and disillusioning that I chose to abandon academic research or any hope of having a tenure track career altogether. Everyone that I know was either completely abused and traumatized by their advisor, or pod personed by them and transformed into exactly the kind of passive aggressive liberal manipulative ghoul that had once mistreated them. Graduate study ravaged my health and my self-concept.

Is there hope for actually Autistic individuals pursuing research into Autism? Well, there is a growing body of research by us and for us. Journals like Autism in Adulthood do give me hope, and help nourish me intellectually and improve my work.

Are there any researchers whom I've seen building community with Autistic people and listening to Autistic voices? All the ones that I've seen actually operating in practice use methods of communication and workflows that are profoundly inaccessible and harmful to us, even if they are incredibly well intentioned and open to the idea of neurodiversity. There is a lot of decent research coming out these days finally, but I don't know how all of that sausage gets made.

Do I have any advice for surviving in the field as an Autistic person? Make sure you have a very robust support system that exists completely independently from academia. Make sure you have a complete and rich life that has nothing to do with academics and do not give up even a SHRED of it, even if it means accomplishing less and taking more time while you are in school. Have hobbies, friends and loved ones you see daily, a spiritual or physical practice that helps you offload stress, vacations or little adventures within your community that renew you, and work that is applied and grounded rather than just basic/theoretical research. (especially needed if you're in cognitive psych land. shit gets so fuckin abstact and divorced from reality).

Read a lot of fiction or practice some art or do something creative that has nothing to do with your graduate studies. Do not sign up for meaningless committees. Poster presentations do not matter and don't help your CV much at all. Most committees don't either. Read the book The Professor Is In and the blog that goes along with it religiously. Do not trust your advisor. Do not expect your dissertation to be perfect and do not make it your most ambitious project, focus on making it something you can get done quickly that is just "good enough." Cultivate skills that will be useful outside of academia. Do not assume you will ever get an academic job. Read the statistics on how many PhDs there are relative to how many professorships. Speak to people who work outside of academia who have the credentials you are getting. Know how to market yourself and get a job outside of academia if you have to -- consulting especially may be a good fit if you are Autistic and not suited for a 9 to 5 in an office.

Grill any potential advisor at any program you are considered for, hard. if they are defensive being asked questions about their working style, their leadership style, their former students, etc, that means they do not like ever being challenged and that is a red flag. Ask to speak to *FORMER* students. Not current ones. Current ones will not feel safe being honest. Ask for job placement data for graduates of their lab. Look up reviews. Do not pay for graduate school, only apply to fully funded programs otherwise they are scamming you. Remember you can leave at any time. good luck.

so ive only been wading in postal lore for like a couple weeks so maybe everyones already discussed this already, but i was looking at some promo material from 1997 and i got whiplash from realizing postal 1 dude is probably actually a teenager?? like either a high schooler or fresh out of high school???

even without the last image there ^, i was already thinking the language of the interviewee characters felt so "talking about a guy who just graduated", but then the fact that his canon gf is a 17 yo high schooler is like, he must be around the same age??

ive always been a little confused about why he looks like a teenager in the box art photo, but decidedly Not a teenager in all other iterations, including most art for postal 1

but thinking about all this in relation to how his voice lines are labelled as Demon, im thinking that the concept for postal 1 was always that hes a fucked up teenager whos hearing a scary voice that is Not him, but for whatever reason after shipping the game and some time passing they were just like yeah nevermind hes just an adult guy

The eternal fucking tragedy of Jupiter Ascending is that the wider world doesn't love it like we do. Does it have every single thing that turns my crank, id-wise? Sure! Does it have gorgeous over-the-top sequined costumes and extravagant set pieces that remind you at every minute that this movie specially thanked Swarovski Crystal in the credits? Sure! Does it have theeeee single most pinpoint reading of MY PERSONAL FEMALE GAZE that Channing Tatum has ever done? (sorry mister Magic Mike, but you do not even come CLOSE to "may I kill him?" in terms of sexy) SURE! Was this movie a commercial or critical success? Absolutely not 😔

There isn't, as far as I'm aware, an art book. There isn't an official novelization. There isn't even an actual script posted to the usual internet databases that isn't just an automatic shitty talk-to-text rendition of the movie dialogue. There are concept art paintings and old cast interviews floating around, and this auction website where the Wachowskis auctioned off some of the props from the movie, but as far as canon resources and extra material beyond the movie itself there isn't much. A quick duckduckgo search would probably be more helpful to you than anything else, if any of the websites still have the articles up - it WAS eight years ago, and doesn't that just break my fucking heart.

My corner of tumblr LOVED this movie. In 2015, there were TONS of posts gathering interviews, posting concept art, making cosplays, all the signs of a small but healthy fandom ecosystem. However, we call this the blue hellsite for a reason - not all of those resources are still there, and the ones that survived time and incompetent archival site coding are probably difficult to find. I would definitely recommend trawling the JA tags of all the blogs I tagged at the start of this post, as JA introduced me to two of my longest and most beloved of all mutuals. ALL of their insights were key to A Fine Chain.

There is also my own jupiter ascending tag and my more specific jupiter ascending meta tag, although I don't know how bored you are lol. The general JA tag is 105 pages - I would almost recommend just starting at page 105 and working forward from there since it chronicles my descent into kinky space angel werewolf brain rot pretty nicely. There are also my ao3 bookmarks for JA.

I WILL SAY that it has been 8 years, and I have changed into a very different person than the one I was when I first saw this movie. I don't REGRET the first few chapters of A Fine Chain, or any of my breathless meta posts, but I do think that if I were to write any of them over again, I'd hope that my writing style has matured and I'd have lots more extra material to draw from. Actually graduating from law school, writing long fic in another fandom, and generally percolating more as a person has given me lots of new perspectives on JA that make it more interesting even as I still enjoy it (for example, HBO's Succession is ODDLY RELEVANT and I wish there were more JA fanwriters to take advantage of that fact).

...I hope that was helpful? I will ETERNALLY mourn the fact that this fandom wasn't isn't bigger - we haven't even broken 1k on ao3! But EYE MYSELF am here to discuss JA stuff as long as this weird spurt of creative energy sustains me, and my inbox is always open!

Reworking my concept for Cloud Tower because my god, what was I thinking last year?

I'm also finally doing Alfea and Red Fountain

So here some info:

Magix Military Academy: Red Fountain

In addition to being an academy, Red Fountain is one of Magix's military training bases, the vast majority of students who manage to graduate become soldiers in the service of the planet. To enter you must be invited, especially if you are from another planet or realm. Magix citizens can also take an assessment test to enter college, which is divided into 6 phases corresponding to each of the requirements to become a specialist.

I wanted Red Fountain to be seen but not very accessible, so it is very close to the capital, but it is on an artificial island that is difficult for civilians to access.

Cloud Tower: Modern Witchcraft Univercity

The witchcraft of the Trilogy Of Cosmo's side of the dimension was changed after so many years, becoming modern witchcraft, this side of the dimension abhors and does not respect witchcraft.
