the one in which Julie moves into the lighthouse of Point Medusa and promptly becomes a target for the building's frantic ghosts and less-than-ideal past. Hey, at least the girls in town are lovely.

Carefully, she folds the corners up and drops the cloth in the corner of the room. She’ll worry about laundry and new sheets tomorrow; when her brain isn’t a whirling mess of grey clouds. And even though the old sheets smell about as stale as they could, she just barely musters the energy to change into her PJs before crawling in and closing her eyes.  When she opens them again, it’s to the vast sight of the ocean and the night sky spreading out in front of and beneath her. Julie exhales and watches a small cloud drift out of her mouth and into the night. Her legs dangle where she sits on the railing, her hands curled loosely around the metal for stability.  Beneath her, the waves crash into the rocks where the lighthouse stands. Slowly, Julie becomes aware of how high up she is. Her heart leaps up into her throat, her vision blurs as she clutches the railing with a death grip. Her hands feel slick with something, too slippery to keep holding on for long. Julie knows she has to move and get back on the other side of the railing, where the light slowly turns inside the lantern room. She doesn’t remember lighting it, isn’t even sure it should still be functional. She doesn’t dare move.  The sound of the waves and her heart slowly meld together into a cacophony of low rumbling. Julie thinks she might hear a voice, distant and distorted. Her hands slip and she looks down again. The ocean breaks up on the rocks, the foam pink instead of white. The lantern turns and the waves shine red. Somebody screams. The railing disappears, and Julie falls.

Two and a half songs later, the door attached to the house swings open, and Bobby finally appears at the top of the small flight of stairs. He’s got his guitar, and he says, “Sorry, guys,” the second Luke signals for Alex and Reggie to stop, but there’s definitely something off about him. The years-old bags under his eyes that he tells fans are eyeliner stains are even more pronounced than usual. He’s still in his pajamas, a housecoat and slippers thrown on like he’s eighty. He moves slowly down the stairs and slings his guitar strap over his head with a wince. Luke’s skin crawls with worry.

But instead of expressing concern like a good friend, or even like a normal human, Luke says, “Where the hell were you?” and it comes out harsher than he meant it to.

His only true family comes from his band, Sunset Curve, who’re hoping to make it big in the music scene to the point where they'll do whatever it takes just to get out there. Admittedly, Julie drank more than she probably should have, distracted by Flynn and Carrie’s company and the warmth of sitting in a bar with people talking and laughing all around her. It’s much later than she had planned to return, her phone two percent away from dying on her. So it’s no surprise she is struggling to close the lighthouse door behind her, and it’s no surprise that she is no longer walking in steady, straight lines. But it would have been fine—she would have found her way back to her bedroom without any further issues—if she hadn’t thought to grab herself a glass of water for when she wakes up. There is somebody else in the kitchen when she arrives. Not just one, but three somebodies, shadows moving erratically across the walls, shrinking and growing in no discernible pattern. One of them, dried blood down the back of a torn shirt, is clutching one of her mum’s floral cups against its chest, blackened fingers hiding the petals and porcelain from her view. Another, smaller—tall, broad, short, barely a line across the wall—shadow pulls out of the strange two-dimensional caricature and Julie’s terror, stuck somewhere between her tongue and teeth, reverberates around her head as bloodless lips open in a silent scream that feels peeled from her leaden tongue.

“You Make Me Stupid”

Peterpatter | Word Count: 6079

Reggie has liked his best friend for god-knows-how-long (it’s actually been around two years minus the whole being-dead-for-two-and-a-half-decades) and he’s been fine with doing nothing about it. He’s used to it by now. But when Julie sees a song he’s working on and immediately figures it out, she urges him to tell Luke. So that’s what he does. Or…doesn’t. Don’t worry, he has a plan.

Luke has liked his best friend for a while now and has never really had the time to tell him, if he wanted to. Even if he does, well, he doesn’t want to risk it. They’ve got a good thing going already - why ruin it? But one day he finds another one of his country ballads thrown into his notebook and reads it. Except this one’s different. It’s about someone. And Luke can’t help it: he’s jealous. Great.

TL:DR: they’re both idiots and miscommunication ensues.

He gets little inputs of sensation—a soft towel squeezing the rain out of his hair, squishy antibiotic cream and cheap plastic Band-Aids being pressed to the cuts on his face and knees, voices of varying pitch and levels of concern sifting in and out of his periphery.

Finally, Nick feels something press to his lips and cold, clear water explodes over his tongue. He reaches clumsily for the cup and tries to tilt it back farther, but a voice murmurs, “Chill out, man, you’ll make yourself sick. Small sips,” and he doesn’t know how to disobey.

The water helps Nick get some of his bearings back, though he thinks that might be his brain lying to him more than any actual restorative effects. He opens his eyes to find his vision has finally steadied itself. He’s sitting up against the arm of a couch, a blanket wrapped tightly around his shoulders, and there are four boys around his age crouched in front of him: the tall Asian guy who met him at the door, and…

“You’re supposed to be holograms,” Nick says stupidly to the three other members of Julie’s band.

A voice in the back of his head corrects, They’re supposed to be dead.
